Kroos was born to play at Real Madrid - Heynckes

Former Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes feels Toni Kroos was born to play at Real Madrid after the midfielder's impressive start to life at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Kroos scored his first goal in a Madrid shirt in their 5-1 drubbing of Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, helping Carlo Ancelotti's men consolidate top spot in the league.

Heynckes coached the Germany international between 2011 and 2013 and the 69-year-old has hailed his former pupil's beginning to his career in the Spanish top flight. "Kroos is playing magnificent football," Heynckes told Perform.

"It's his destiny to play there. He has a leading role as a playmaker in the midfield of Real Madrid and that's a huge achievement because only world-class footballers are playing there.

"The team accepts him, he's wonderfully integrated. "You cannot play the position Kroos plays in defensive midfield besides Luka Modric better than he does.

"I called him, I sent him messages to congratulate him. It's really fantastic, particularly if you consider the pressure there is in Madrid."Meanwhile, former Madrid boss Bernd Schuster has stressed he is not surprised by Kroos' influential start to his Madrid career."Kroos is everything I was expecting because he is an intelligent player," Schuster said.

"That's a very important attribute in this game. He has it all as a player but I still think that his ideal position is a bit more advanced, at least that's where I like him because he can exploit all conditions."You have to adapt the needs of your players to the team. Kroos is adapting fast because of his quality and intelligence. He's got a good understanding with Modric, who is another like him who could play more advanced.

"Because Kroos is often so far back, it's difficult for him to use some of his qualities, like making the final pass or shooting. "German players have always been good long-range shooters... we like having a shot."

Del Bosque: Spain not weak for backing down in Diego Costa dispute

    567951_heroa.jpg

Vicente del Bosque claims a Spain call-up for Diego Costa would have been “counter-productive” and insists the Spanish Football Federation was not weak for backing down in a club-versus-country row with Chelsea.

Costa came back from the last Roja games with a groin injury and Blues boss Jose Mourinho placed the blame firmly at the feet of the Brazilian-born striker's adopted national team.

Although Del Bosque claimed he would ignore the former Real Madrid coach's protestations and continue to select Costa, the 63-year-old's squad was noticeably free of the Chelsea star when named on Friday.

Costa went on to star and score in Chelsea's 2-1 victory over Liverpool on Saturday, prompting suggestions his fitness was not as brittle as Mourinho likes to suggest, but Del Bosque thinks that omitting him on this occasion was the right thing to do.

"There is nothing to discuss," he told reporters on Monday when asked about Costa's absence from the squad to face Belarus and Germany over the next 10 days."Somebody has probably suggested that it is a weakness on Spain's behalf but it is not a weakness or arrogance.

"We are football people and fully aware of the situation with Diego. The other day I said he would play against Liverpool, and he did, but two games in the international break would have been counter-productive and damaging to his health."That's the case. It has nothing to do with anything else."

Mourinho suggested after Chelsea's game at the weekend that Cesc Fabregas - who has been integral in the club's unbeaten start to the Premier League season - should not join up with Spain because he was carrying an injury.

However, Del Bosque has refused to let the former Barcelona midfielder drop out without Spain first checking his fitness, which he claims has nothing to do with an erosion of trust in Chelsea or the player, but simply following procedure.

"We have not replaced Fabregas yet because we want him to see our medical staff first," the World Cup 2010-winning coach continued."This is not a lack of confidence in the player or Chelsea's doctors or anything like that, but it's simply procedure for him to be checked up on, for clarification"The Diego Costa case is different to the Fabregas case. For Fabregas, some protocols must be met and there are obligations to comply with.

"There is no lack of trust in the player, who, by the way, has 95 international caps. There is no friction between us and the player; there's no tension or us trying to win one over [Chelsea].

"We're just trying to bring the best players to the squad that we can."Spain host Belarus on Saturday as they chase down Slovakia at the top of their Euro 2016 qualification group, before facing world champions Germany in a friendly on November 18.

Argentina 2-1 Croatia: Messi scores winner against second-string Balkans

    592221_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi bagged the winner for Argentina as they defeated a second-string Croatia side 2-1 on Wednesday.

Carlos Tevez made his return after being an outcast under former Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella, but was handed the chance to revive his career with the national team by new boss Gerardo Martino on Wednesday. The South Americans ultimately had Messi and a deflected Cristian Ansaldi effort to thank for their win in east London.

Anas Sharbini had given the relatively inexperienced Croatia side a surprise lead 11 minutes in with a neat finish into the right-hand corner, and Argentina had to wait until the early part of the second half to restore parity.Ansaldi's long-range strike took a wicked deflection off Sergio Aguero's hand to leave Lovre Kalinic helpless, before the Hajduk Split goalkeeper brought down Aguero inside the area - allowing Messi to put Argentina in front from the spot.

Tevez then made his first Argentina appearance since 2011 with his introduction off the bench and was greeted with plenty of applause from the crowd at former club West Ham.

While he was unable to get on the scoresheet, Argentina held out for a hard-earned win while Croatia will now turn their focus to Sunday's crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy.

Despite the apparent gulf in quality and experience between the sides, with Croatia clearly having one eye on the weekend's clash at San Siro, Niko Kovac's side began well, with Sharbini ensuring an early lead as he netted his first international goal.

Mateo Kovacic’s run helped occupy the attentions of Federico Fazio and Pablo Zabaleta before the Inter man switched the ball wide for Sharbini to slot home and open his Croatia account.

Debutant goalkeeper Kalinic was tested by long-range strikes from Aguero and Angel Di Maria as Argentina continued to up the pressure in search of an equaliser after the half-hour mark.

Captain Messi found the side netting after a neat lay-off from Ansaldi inside the area and then saw a free-kick saved by Kalinic as a resolute Croatia stood firm to lead at the interval.Barcelona's 18-year-old prodigy Alen Halilovic replaced Kovacic at the break but Croatia were quickly pegged back courtesy of Ansaldi's deflected strike.

The Atletico Madrid full-back controlled the ball smartly and let fly from distance to find the top corner, courtesy of a hefty deflection that appeared to strike Aguero on the hand.

Halilovic's attempts to restore Croatia's lead were thwarted as he was outmuscled by club-mate Javier Mascherano following a strong burst forward. But it was another Barca man who put Argentina ahead when Messi stroked home a penalty three minutes short of the hour after Kalinic had felled Aguero inside the area.

The Argentina captain's first international goal came against Croatia in 2006 and, while the playmaker failed to add to his tally at Upton Park, Tevez almost sealed a goalscoring return with a header from Ever Banega's cross before seeing a strike pushed wide by Kalinic.

Netherlands 2-3 Mexico: Vela ends international wilderness in style

    591781_heroa.jpg

Carlos Vela ended his three-year international absence in style by scoring twice as Mexico got some revenge on Netherlands for their World Cup elimination with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday.

Vela was making his first appearance for the national side for three and a half years at the Amsterdam ArenA after refusing several call-ups, with his unwillingness to play for his country seeing him miss the 2014 World Cup.

However, the Real Sociedad striker accepted the latest olive branch from Herrera and wasted no time in illustrating his worth with a well-taken double.

Vela's two goals were separated by a powerful volley from Wesley Sneijder on a night that saw the Galatasaray star become the third-most capped Netherlands player with 110 international appearances. But Javier Hernandez added a third to render that moment of magic irrelevant in spite of Daley Blind's deflected 74th-minute strike.

Mexico stood firm to gain a measure of revenge for their 2-1 loss to Netherlands in the last 16 of the World Cup and place further pressure on Dutch head coach Guus Hiddink, who revealed that he would resign if his side lose to Latvia in Euro 2016 qualifying on Sunday.

Sneijder was presented with a pre-match award for reaching 100 caps, but it was Vela who stole the spotlight just eight minutes after kick-off as he marked his comeback with a magnificent goal.

Vela curled a superb 20-yard effort beyond a helpless Tim Krul and into the top corner, silencing the crowd at the Amsterdam Arena with his first goal since a 2-1 win over Italy in June 2010.Hiddink was made to reshuffle in the 24th minute when centre-back Ron Vlaar was forced off through injury and replaced by Stefan de Vrij.

Despite that setback Netherlands began to take control of the game, Depay casually firing over from a clever lofted pass from the ever-threatening Robben, who worked Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa with a powerful low drive from distance.

But the chance of the half fell to Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Schalke striker somehow firing wide at the far post with the goal at his mercy after De Vrij had nodded a Robben corner into his path.

However, only four minutes into the second half Sneijder levelled in spectacular fashion. The 30-year-old controlled a Mexico clearance brilliantly before unleashing an unstoppable dipping volley that left Ochoa groping at thin air.

Krul produced a fine point-blank save from Hernandez but the Newcastle United keeper turned from hero to villain in the 62nd minute, as he allowed Vela's half volley to sneak underneath him after his defence had been undone by substitute Jesus Corona clever pass.

And the visitors ultimately put the result beyond doubt seven minutes later when Hernandez latched onto a throughball from Andres Guardado, rounded Krul and tucked into an empty net.Yet a touch of fortune gave the hosts a route back into the contest, Blind's long-range strike taking a wicked deflection that wrongfooted Ochoa to halve the deficit.

A night of frustration for Netherlands was encapsulated in the 85th minute when Ochoa dived to his left to keep out a header from substitute Georginio Wijnaldum, sealing a result that ramps up the strain on the shoulders of Hiddink ahead a qualifier that could see his second spell in charge of his country come to an early end.

Turkey 0-4 Brazil: Neymar bags two in Selecao rout

Neymar scored twice as Brazil in a 4-0 thrashing of Turkey on Wednesday as they continued their dominating performances following their World Cup embarrassment in the summer.

Brazil's performances have been steadily improving since Dunga took up the reins from Luiz Felipe Scolari this summer and the win in Istanbul saw them repeat of their 4-0 drubbing of Japan last month.

Neymar's first came after 20 minutes, as he poked the ball past Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, before Semih Kaya put the ball in his own net to double their advantage.

Willian - excellent throughout - extended the lead just before the break by sidefooting home in plenty of space, before the Chelsea man then provided the assist for Neymar to slot home the fourth on the hour. The victory is Brazil's fifth in as many matches in Dunga's second stint in charge, while Turkey have not won in four.

With the Brazilian domestic season in its final stages, Dunga named a squad comprising only players who ply their trade abroad, and it was the visitors who applied the early pressure.Despite dominating the opening period, Brazil had to wait until the ninth minute to produce their first real shot at goal – Oscar drilling an effort straight at Demirel from 25 yards.

Neymar almost rounded Demirel soon afterwards, before curling over a free-kick after Willian had been felled by Bekir Irtegun just outside the penalty area.

However, the Brazil captain soon had the ball in the back of the net. Running on to a superb Fernandinho ball from deep in the 20th minute, Neymar overcame a poor touch to prod a shot past Demirel and into the bottom left-hand corner.

Turkey have never beaten Brazil, and they certainly did not look likely to break that duck when Kaya diverted the ball into his own net from a Danilo cross five minutes later.

The hosts had struggled to pose any threat to the opposition goal, but finally Arda Turan forced Diego Alves to tip the ball over with a curling effort on the half-hour mark, before Umut Bulut nodded narrowly wide from Hamit Altintop's cross.
It was Brazil who ended the half in the ascendancy, and having already chipped over crossbar with Demirel stranded, an unmarked Willian sidefooted home the third following good work by Neymar.

Demirel was put out of his misery at half-time, with Volkan Babacan coming on as one of four changes for the home side, and the replacement shot-stopper made an almost instant impact by getting down brilliantly to his right to keep out David Luiz's header. The Paris Saint-Germain defender was quick to congratulate Babacan on a superb save, but the 26-year-old - making just his second international appearance - was soon having to pick the ball out of his net.

Neymar exchanged passes with Willian before easing through the Turkish defence to slip the ball beyond Babacan.Bulut was kept out by Alves after being sent through byArda 20 minutes from time, but the clash lost momentum thereafter as both coaches made a series of substitutions - to no avail in Turkey's case.

Shakhtar Donetsk duo Douglas Costa and Fred came off the bench to make their Brazil debuts, joining club-mate Luiz Adriano - also making his first international appearance having played from the start. There was also a debut for Hoffenheim's Roberto Firmino, who replaced Luiz Adriano after 73 minutes.

Messi: Argentina preparing to win the Copa America

    593091_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi believes Argentina's 2-1 win over Croatia on Wednesday was an important step as they prepare to build a challenge for the Copa America next summer.

The 27-year-old ultimately scored the winner from the spot, adding to Cristian Ansaldi's deflected opener after the South Americans had fallen behind, and he believes the clash at Upton Park was the latest hurdle to success.

"We are preparing for winning at Copa America in Chile in 2015," he said. "We have to make a good use of the time together."In the second half we changed our plan and it went well. Every match - even every training session - is important for us."

Messi hinted he was a little challenged by the role he was asked to play on the right on Wednesday. He started his career at Barcelona playing out wide but became the world-class superstar he is today after being deployed through the middle, where in recent years he has also shone for the Albiceleste.

But Gerardo Martino - who coached him at Camp Nou last season - told the four-time Ballon d'Or winner to patrol the flanks in their friendly with Niko Kovac's men this week and he suggested it was strange being back out wide."Martino said me I was going to play as a right winger," he explained. "I know the position, but I have spent a lot of time not playing in that position."

Argentina are back in action on Tuesday, November 18 when they face Portugal in another friendly in England, this time at Old Trafford in Manchester.

Willian: I'm still not a certain starter for Brazil

    586201_heroa.jpg

Willian insists that he will not allow his stellar showing against Turkey on Wednesday go to his head.

The Chelsea attacker has taken his time to settle with the Selecao but he played a key role in the 4-0 win in Istanbul, scoring one goal and having a hand in two others.

However, despite the impressive way in which he linked with star striker Neymar, who netted twice in the Turkish capital, Willian says he intends to keep his feet planted firmly on the ground.

"I can’t relax now, though, and just assume that I'm a certain starter," the 26-year-old told TV Globo. "I have to earn my inclusion every day."But I am growing with the Selecao, improving with every game, playing better all the time, and that’s important."

The victory in Turkey was Brazil's fifth in succession since Dunga succeeded Luiz Felipe Scolari as coach after the World Cup and Willian feels that the game offered further evidence of the Selecao's progression in recent months.“We played very well from the start, with the idea of marking tightly and holding posession," he explained.

"Luckily, we managed to take almost every single opportunity we created."The five-time world champions will now face Austria in Vienna on November 15 in what will be their final Gillette Brasil Global Tour outing of the year.

Robben slams unstable and insecure Dutch defence

    592781_heroa.jpg

Arjen Robben slammed Netherlands defence after they fell to a 3-2 friendly loss to Mexico on Wednesday.

An entertaining game at the Amsterdam ArenA was settled in the visitors' favour by a double from Carlos Vela on his return to international football after a three-and-a-half-year absence and an effort from Javier Hernandez. A fierce long-range volley from Wesley Sneijder and Daley Blind's deflected strike were rendered insufficient by the hosts' sloppy play at the back.

Bayern Munich winger Robben was highly critical of the Dutch performance, which marked the second time that Guus Hiddink has lost four of his first five games as coach after doing the same during his first stint in charge in 1995."We should not point the finger at each other," Robben told SBS6 . "But we have to speak to each other about the errors that were made.

"We have no security or stability at the back and we fall into repetition."We get three against three [in attack], which means we had to make the right play. We have had those opportunities. The story has another side: we need to make more goals."

Hiddink has suggested that he will resign if Netherlands do not beat Latvia in Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier, however, Robben would not be drawn on the team's opinion of their coach. When asked if the team is behind Hiddink he replied: "I think that's a stupid question."

David Luiz: Brazil have rediscovered resiilence

    501851_heroa.jpg

David Luiz hailed Brazil's rediscovered resilience after Wednesday night's 4-0 rout of Turkey in Istanbul.

The Selecao were criticised for the defensive and mental frailty following their World Cup elimination earlier this year but they have responded with five successive victories - and five consecutive clean sheets - since the return of Dunga as coach in July.

Although Neymar netted twice in what ultimately proved a comfortable win for Brazil in Turkey, the visitors were forced to withstand a period of sustained pressure before putting the result beyond all doubt when Willian slotted home in the 44th minute.

David Luiz felt the breakaway nature of their third goal perfectly illustrated the way in which Brazil - who blooded three uncapped players in Luiz Adriano, Roberto Firmino and Douglas Costa - have progressed since the World Cup."We turned the pressure in our favour," the Paris Saint-Germain defender told TV Globo.

"I’m happy with how the team performed against a difficult opponent, so it was a good debut for the new guys."That’s what we must try to achieve now: to grow in each and every game. So, in general, we’re happy with our work. But we must keep our feet on the ground and try to improve in every aspect of our game.

"When you have a goal like this, you’re on the right road to becoming stronger."
Next up for Dunga's men on their Gillette Brasil Global Tour is a meeting with Austria, in Vienna, on November 18.

Neymar: I'm in the form of my life

    591761_heroa.jpg

Neymar claimed that he is in the form of his life after netting twice in Brazil's 4-0 friendly win over Turkey on Wednesday evening.

The Selecao skipper opened and closed the scoring in Istanbul to take his international goals tally to 42 in just 59 games.Given he has also been in fine form for Barcelona of late, netting nine times in nine Liga games, Neymar feels as if he has gone to another level this season.

Indeed, when asked by TV Globo if he is currently enjoying the best form of his career to date, the 22-year-old enthused: "I think so!

“I’m very emotional. It’s another country, another stadium to keep in my heart.
"I didn’t expect this, I couldn’t be happier. But I always want more. I don’t want to remain at this level.”Neymar also feels that Brazil are a team on the rise again, with the Selecao having won five games on the spin under new coach Dunga, who succeeded Luiz Felipe Scolari at the helm after a desperately disappointing World Cup campaign.

“Things are flowing now," the attacker explained. "We have great players, not only with the Selecao, but in Brazil as a whole."Players keep coming in and out but we never lose rhythm. We were great out there tonight!"

The South American nation will be hoping to make it six wins on the spin when they face Austria in their final Gillette Brasil Global Tour outing of the year, in Vienna, on November 18.

PSV will sell Depay, admits Cocu

    591481_heroa.jpg

Phillip Cocu has admitted that it is inevitable PSV will sell Memphis Depay despite choosing to block his exit during the summer.

Both Manchester United and Tottenham were tracking the winger this year, with Louis van Gaal eyeing a swoop in 2015, and the 20-year-old remained in Netherlands.

PSV set an €22 million asking price for Depay to ward off interest, and Cocu is glad the Dutch star remained at the Philips Stadion and takes pride in his burgeoning talent.

"Of course Memphis will be sold, you can't stop that but it's okay,"he told Helden magazine.

"It's great you can build up a player like him, who breaks through, succeeds at PSV then leaves the club when he's ready for a bigger step. That's great.

"I really thought it would be the best for him if he stayed here with us this season. It's important for him to play around 50 matches in a season before he makes the next step.

"Nothing else makes you a better player than a lot of games. He can become way better, he's so explosive."

Paulinho: Maybe I should return to Brazil

    505841_heroa.jpg

Paulinho has revealed he would consider a return to his native Brazil in January as he continues to struggle for regular first-team football at Tottenham.

The 26-year-old moved to White Hart Lane in a €20 million deal from Corinthians in the summer of 2013 but failed to consistently impress in a debut season characterised by managerial instability at Spurs.

And having made just seven appearances under Mauricio Pochettino this term - only one of which came in the Premier League - Paulinho admits the time may be right to go back to his homeland.

"I have always been sincere," he told Lance!. "A player always wants to play. You can see that I am playing few games at Tottenham. Maybe it's time to look for the opportunity to go back.

"There is interest from Brazilian and European clubs, but nothing official yet. I’m glad to be recognised by Roberto de Andrade [a candidate for the presidency of Corinthians]. I feel very proud.

"I always try to fulfil my contracts in the best way possible. Tottenham invested big money for my transfer. It might work out or not, as with any player. Today there is no way I think about a transfer because there are still two months until the next window opens."

Rooney is England's best in a generation - Carrick

Michael Carrick feels Wayne Rooney is among the best players of his generation as the England captain prepares to win his 100th cap.

Rooney is set to become the ninth man to reach a century of England caps against Slovenia at Wembley on Saturday, having made his international debut against Australia in 2003.

The 29-year-old will join David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard in reaching the century mark and Carrick feels his Manchester United team-mate fully deserves to reach the landmark.

"Obviously it's a huge achievement," Carrick told reporters.

"We've been lucky over recent years - we first had David Beckham and then Ashley Cole, then Stevie Gerrard and then Frank Lampard - to have five players like that in such a short space of time shows that we have had some special players.

"Wayne is right at the top of the tree for what he has done throughout his career. He is leading [Manchester] United and England.

"Hopefully he can get Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record pretty soon as well."

Charlton scored 49 goals for England, with Rooney on 43 ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia and a friendly against Scotland next Tuesday.

Fabregas and Costa will fire Chelsea to the title - Nevin

    590401_heroa.jpg

Chelsea legend Pat Nevin admits Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas have surprised him with their performances this season and believes the Premier League trophy will be heading to Stamford Bridge as long as Jose Mourinho's men avoid serious injuries to key players.

The Blues top the table by four points from Southampton after winning nine of their first 11 matches, with many suggesting they could go on to match or even better the achievement of Arsene Wenger's legendary 'Invincibles' by maintaining their unbeaten record throughout the season.

Costa - scoring nine goals in 10 appearances - and Fabregas - notching nine assists in 11 games - have both played key roles in Chelsea's blistering start, and Nevin readily concedes that the Spain duo have exceeded his expections so far at Stamford Bridge.

"Cesc Fabregas is not the sort of high intensity player that Mourinho likes, but he’s been in sparkling form, much better than I thought," the Scot told Goal.

"I’d seen bits of Diego Costa, but there is more to him than I’d given him credit for. He’s a natural goalscorer, links play very well and his quick and strong. He bullies defenders like old-fashioned strikers and hassles them into making mistakes.

"They are rightly hot favourites to land the title and if they can keep most of their players fit, it should be theirs.

"Chelsea have not had the injuries suffered by their rivals. It can all change so quickly. Imagine losing Eden Hazard and John Terry for long spells, for instance. Mourinho is right not to get carried away with the start."

Nevin is also full of praise for Chelsea's other summer signings and believes they have adapted their approach in the transfer market to the requirements of Financial Fair Play superbly.

"Bringing back Thibaut Courtois from his loan spell at Atletico Madrid was not a gamble because he’s been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for 18 months, but there were some gambles that have paid off," he added.

"Didier Drogba was a gamble, but has lasted games better than I thought and has chipped in with crucial goals.

"Unlike their title rivals, Chelsea have a balanced squad. Anyone can attract big names if they’ve got the money, but to get the balance right is the difficult bit.

"In these days of Financial Fair Play (FFP) Mourinho has worked the transfer market really well.

"He got fantastic money for Juan Mata last season, and then David Luiz and Romelu Lukaku during the summer."

    Sturridge returns to Liverpool training

    585551_heroa.jpg

Daniel Sturridge has revealed that he has returned to first-team training at Liverpool following a lengthy injury lay-off.

Sturridge, who scored 21 Premier League goals last season, has not featured for the Reds since starring in a 3-0 win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane on August 31 after sustaining a thigh injury on England duty.

The 25-year-old's fitness sparked a fierce public spat between Brendan Rodgers and Roy Hodgson, and he suffered a setback earlier this month on the eve of Liverpool's clash with QPR, injuring his calf in training.

But Sturridge, who recently suggested in an interview with talkSPORT that his injury problems might be hereditary, took to Twitter to reveal he is once again on the road to recovery.

Liverpool have won just four of 14 matches in all competitions since Sturridge was sidelined and currently languish in 11th in the Premier League after 11 games.

Xabi Alonso's Bayern debut was madness - Del Bosque

    589251_heroa.jpg

Vicente del Bosque has lauded the way Xabi Alonso has found his feet at Bayern Munich since joining from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

The 32-year-old has developed into a key figure at Bayern since his summer move and Del Bosque believes his home nation should be proud of the former international's prowess on the pitch."Xabi is almost like a coach on the pitch. A lot of players are looking in his direction," Del Bosque told Sport Bild.

"He is an extraordinary player. It's utter madness that he made his debut for Bayern against Schalke just 48 hours after joining them. That's more proof of his intelligence."Spain should be proud of him."

Del Bosque then went on to praise Toni Kroos, too, who moved in the opposite direction ahead of the 2014-15 campaign and has enjoyed a hugely promising start to his career at Santiago Bernabeu."Kroos plays a similar role as Alonso. They are always looking for him as well at Madrid. He plays a bit deeper than at Bayern, but 80 per cent of his passes reach a team-mate," he said.

"Kroos is a very elegant player. He changes the pace of the game, plays short passes and then long balls. He is extraordinary, too."

'Klopp was enthusiastic about joining Bayern Munich'

    550341_heroa.jpg

Mainz director Christian Heidel has revealed that current Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp came close to joining Bayern Munich in the summer of 2008.

Bayern had lined up Klopp as one of the candidates to replace Ottmar Hitzfeld as head coach following his successful spell with Mainz and approached him by phone to formally express their interest, according to Heidel. However, they eventually opted to appoint Jurgen Klinsmann instead, despite claims that Klopp was "enthusiastic" about their interest.

"I was sitting right next to him when he got a call from Bayern director Uli Hoeness," Heidel told Bild."Bayern had two candidates and Klopp was one of them, the domestic option. Jurgen Klinsmann was the other candidate and he was the internationally renowned option.

"Of course, he started to get enthusiastic about it. When Bayern give you a call to express their interest, it always does something with you."Klopp was also courted by Bayer Leverkusen at the time before he opted to leave Mainz to take charge at Dortmund.

The 47-year-old has guided BVB to two Bundesliga titles and one DFB Pokal since, while also leading them to the Champions League final in 2012-13, which they lost 2-1 to Bayern.

Bale doesn't want Premier League return, insists agent

    556881_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale is not interested in leaving Real Madrid for a return to the Premier League, one of his representatives - David Manasseh - has said.

The 25-year-old impressed in his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu, scoring 22 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions, including crucial strikes in the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals.

However, Bale has been struggling to replicate that form in 2014-15 and recent rumours claimed that Madrid were interested in an outrageous player-exchange deal that would see Angel Di Maria return to the Spanish capital from Manchester United, with Bale moving in the opposite direction. The attacker's representative has now laughed off such a transfer, though, and has insisted that Bale is happy at his current club.

"It is not true that Gareth wants to return to the Premier League," Manasseh told Calciomercato."Everything is going well for him at Madrid and he wants to continue to wear the Real Madrid jersey.

"These rumours about a swap with United are absolute rubbish."
Bale has a contract with Madrid until the summer of 2019.
