Alonso: Ronaldo the best player I've ever played with

    589251_heroa.jpg

Xabi Alonso says former Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player he has ever played with.

The midfielder spent five years playing alongside the Portugal international at the Santiago Bernabeu before leaving for Bayern Munich this summer, meaning Alonso can now count several members of Germany's World Cup-winning squad as colleagues.Consequently, when it comes to picking a deserving winner for this year's Ballon d'Or, the 32-year-old is somewhat torn.

However, Alonso is edging towards titleholder Ronaldo, admitting that he has never come across a more talented individual.

"I said recently if Manuel Neuer or another German player won the Ballon d'Or, it would be fair as they won the World Cup," the former Liverpool ace told the Daily Mail."But if Ronaldo wins it again, it would also be fair for the season he had, winning the Champions League."He is the best player I have played with."

Meanwhile, Alonso admitted that he had expected to extend his stay at the Bernabeu until he learned that Pep Guardiola wanted him at the Allianz Arena."My idea was to stay in Madrid," he explained. "Then, when I heard of Munich's interest I said 'Xabi, think what you want and where you will be happy.'

"I had been at Madrid for five years. We had won the 10th European Cup, we had been chasing it for a long time and it felt like the business was done."It was either a case of continuing for a few more years in Madrid or trying something different.

"Having experienced La Liga and the Premier League, it was a great chance to come here."The Bundesliga is getting better and this is one of the top clubs in the world."I needed a fresh start somewhere. This might be my last experience in football.

"I came from my hometown team, Real Sociedad, to the best team in England, to the best team in Spain, to the best team in Germany."It is a beautiful career. I wanted a nice football script."

Garcia: Roma will wait for Castan

    623981_heroa.jpg

Roma boss Rudi Garcia says the club will wait as long as it takes for Leandro Castan to return from brain surgery.

It was revealed on Thursday that the 28-year-old defender is facing an unspecified spell on the sidelines with a neurological problem that has restricted him to just one Serie A appearance this season.

However, Garcia insists that the Giallorossi will stand behind Castan, who he has no doubt will come back even stronger from an operation to resolve an accumulation of fluid caused by swelling of the brain.

Asked during a press conference on Friday if he knew when the Brazilian would be in a position to resume his playing career, the Roma coach replied: "I'm not a doctor There are professionals who will evaluate him."But he's a Roma player and we are all behind Leo.

"After his surgery in December he will return to being a Roma player. We will wait for him."But now we must leave him alone. He’s a warrior; he will soon be back at 200 per cent."After a flying start to the new season, Roma's form has wavered since a 3-2 loss at the home of Scudetto rivals Juventus at the start of October.

Indeed, the Giallorossi have won just three of their subsequence seven games in all competitions, a run which included a demoralising 7-1 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich. However, Garcia retains the utmost faith in his team and is in no doubt that they can challenge for the Serie A title, with Roma still just three points behind leaders Juve.

“I’m satisfied and happy with what we’ve done so far this year, apart from the first half against Napoli“The ambition is to win the Scudetto. We’ve got seven finals between now and Christmas, and tomorrow [Saturday] is the first."

Roma will draw level on points with Juve if they beat Atalanta in Bergamo on Saturday evening, though the Bianconeri will reclaim the outright lead of Serie if they avoid defeat at Lazio later that night.

Metz 2-3 PSG: Lavezzi's late winner sends champions top

    628291_heroa.jpg

Ezequiel Lavezzi netted a late winner as Paris Saint-Germain moved top of Ligue 1 with dramatic 3-2 victory at Metz on Friday night.

Boosted by the fit-again Zlatan Ibrahimovic returning to the starting line-up for the first time since September, the reigning French champions looked set to ease to victory at the Stade Saint-Symphorien after claiming two early goals, with Javier Pastore breaking the deadlock with a dinked finish before Gaetan Bussmann put through his own net.

Modibo Maiga responded with two penalties in the space of four second-half minutes, but the visitors ultimately prevailed courtesy of an 83rd-minute winner from Ezequiel Lavezzi. The victory moves PSG two points ahead of Olympique de Marseille, but Marcelo Bielsa's side can retake top spot with victory over Bordeaux on Sunday.

Ibrahimovic was one of six changes to the PSG side that defeated Marseille before the international break, the Sweden international replacing Edinson Cavani up front.

Metz made two alterations from their last league fixture, with Bussmann and Bouna Sarr replacing Jose Palomino and Thibaut Vion, and the hosts started well with
    two early efforts on goal.

However, they were easily saved by Salvatore Sirigu and PSG punished their opponents' profligacy with the opening goal on nine minutes, albeit aided by poor Metz defending.

Jeremy Choplin dallied in possession 25 yards from goal, allowing Pastore to steal the ball. He duly held off Guido Milan's challenge and calmly lifted the ball over Johann Carrasso. The charity continued in the 16th minute as PSG were gifted a second goal, the unfortunate Bussmann deflecting a Lavezzi free-kick into his own net.

Former Chelsea midfielder Florent Malouda went close to halving Metz’s deficit midway through the first half, but the 34-year-old volleyed just wide after a Maiga knockdown.

Having weathered the PSG threat, Metz began to get a foothold in the game, and eight minutes before the break Guirane N'Daw wasted a good chance, heading wide from Romain Metanire's cross.

There was still time for Adrien Rabiot to have a goal disallowed before the break, but three minutes into the second half the game was turned on its head.

Rabiot gave Metz a way back into the match by fouling substitute Sergey Krivets in the penalty area, and Maiga made no mistake from 12 yards with a calm finish to the right of Sirigu.Four minutes later the scores were level as the hosts were awarded another penalty after a Gregory van der Wiel handball. Maiga again sent Sirigu the wrong way to complete Metz's comeback.

The Mali striker could have had a hat-trick on 69 minutes as he was given the freedom of PSG's box to meet a Metanire cross, but Sirigu got down well to push away a downward header.Lavezzi then grabbed the decisive goal, the Argentine pouncing from a yard after Carrasso had partially stopped a strike from Ibrahimovic.

N'Daw fired into the side netting at the other end, but PSG were not to be denied victory and would have added a fourth had Carrasso not made a superb double save to deny substitute Cavani and Ibrahimovic.

DC Comics challenge Valencia over 'Batman' crest

    319469_heroa.jpg

DC Comics, the creators of the famous superhero 'Batman', are locked in a trademark battle with Valencia over the Liga club's new crest.

A bat has been a part of the Spanish side's badge since their foundation in 1919.
However, DC Comics believe that Valencia's latest logo infringes upon copyright laws related to two of their previously registered Batman-related symbols.

Consequently, the American publishing company lodged an official complaint with the European Union's trademark authorities.Indeed, BBC Sport is reporting that DC Comics submitted an 11-page opposition document in May of last year.

Valencia's association with the bat reportedly dates back to the 13th century, when it was reclaimed by King James I of Aragon.According to legend, when the monarch was about to re-enter the city, a bat landed on the top of his flag.

Viewing this as a good omen, King James allegedly decided to incorporate the image of a bat into his coat of arms.

Reus could leave Dortmund - Klopp

    556831_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Marco Reus, like other Borussia Dortmund stars before him, could elect to leave the club.

The 25-year-old has a buyout clause in his contract which becomes active in the summer, and has been linked with a number of clubs, including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and a host of Premier League sides.

Klopp has seen the likes of Shinji Kagawa, Nuri Sahin, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski choose to continue their careers elsewhere and has conceded that his goal is not necessarily to keep the same team together until retirement."We had very successful years and we couldn't keep all these players," he said to BT Sport’s nightly news and information show SportsHUB.

"Not all of them stayed here. They had their own dreams their own situations different ideas, whatever. So we will see."The most important thing is the story of this club will go on. We'll have to do it with other players. It's not our idea to keep this team together until the end, until they're 34 and they go away.

"That was not the idea. We did it because of the potential of these players."
Klopp has been at Dortmund since 2008 - making him the longest-serving Bundesliga coach - but admitted he initially expected not to stay at Signal Iduna Park for so long.

“Not when I was starting no. I was 18 years at Mainz and I thought, that's it enough," he continued."I love this club in Mainz, I love this city, for a long time. My home town and so on. When I came here I thought OK now I can work as a normal coach, two or three years - next club, next city.

"I'm really interested in life, it's not important for me to stay for a long time in the same place. My children are old enough to stay alone, that's not the problem.
"I am here for more than six years, I don't know when it will end, I don't think about this. But it's not my idea to build a legacy. "We will see, as long as it's successful and we can develop everything, we shouldn't change.”

    I'd sign Messi - Ancelotti

    510691_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti says he would be interested in signing Lionel Messi if he decides to leave arch-rivals Barcelona at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old sparked headlines on the back pages of newspapers across the world after revealing he would consider all options available to him once the current campaign is over.

A host of high profile names have made the controversial move from Camp Nou to the Santiago Bernabeu over the years and Ancelotti is open to the idea of lowering the Clasico drawbridge again."Messi could be a fix at Real Madrid? All quality teams have space in their side for quality players," he told reporters at Friday's press conference.

The arrival of Messi, as far-fetched as it may seem, would see the Argentine paired with his long time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.Between them, the two players have won the Ballon d'Or six times, but it is Ronaldo who is the stand out favourite to win the trophy for a third time in January.

Earlier this week Manuel Neuer appeared to endorse his own case for winning the prize after claiming he didn’t need an underwear campaign to support his case, in a jibe at the Portugal captain.Former Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, now at Bayern, then voiced his support for Neuer to be named the world's best player on the back of his World Cup success.

However, Ancelotti believes Ronaldo is the only outstanding choice:”Xabi is among the few who think Ronaldo will not win the Golden Ball [Ballon d’Or].
"It seems like people are forgetting that Ronaldo scored 17 goals in Champions League. We should talk about the Golden Ball of the next year, because for this one, there is no doubt.”

Madrid have been dealt a blow following the news Luka Modric will be missing for three months with a thigh injury. His absence means Sami Khedira is set to be brought in from the cold, having long been linked with a move away from the club.

“The absence of Modric is important, but we can fix it with other important players. If Khedira has not fully recovered, we will play with Isco as midfielder.
“Isco gives me more quality. Khedira, more physical. Isco is happy to play in any position that I put him.“Illarramendi can also play with Kroos.”

Ancelotti also added that youth product Alvaro Medran is training with the first team in light of Modric’s absence, while ruling out the prospect of Jese Rodriguez leaving the club on loan in January, despite his bit-part role since returning from a serious knee injury.Madrid face Eibar in La Liga on Saturday.

Lazio 0-3 Juventus: Pogba at the double as Bianconeri blitz Biancocelesti

    634251_heroa.jpg

Paul Pogba netted twice as 10-man Juventus restored their three-point lead at the top of Serie A with a 3-0 win at Lazio on Saturday night. Two goals from Paul Pogba - either side of one for Carlos Tevez - completed a routine triumph in at the Stadio Olimpico and the result means Juve have now gone 20 Serie A matches without losing against the side from the Italian capital.

The win restored the champions' three-point lead at the top of the table, after Roma had moved level with them thanks to a 2-1 victory at Atalanta earlier in the day.

Juventus were comfortably the better side throughout and never looked like relinquishing their advantage after Pogba's composed strike gave them the edge.
Tevez's goal - his ninth in the league this season - came early in the second period as Juve assumed complete control, which was underlined when Pogba tucked home his second in the 64th minute.

There was one sour note for the visitors when Simone Padoin was shown a second
yellow card for a block on Antonio Candreva 20 minutes from time, but it did little to affect the outcome as Massimiliano Allegri's side managed comfortably being a man down.Following an uneventful opening to the game, Juve broke the deadlock midway through the half thanks to a devastating counter-attack.

Juve broke through Tevez after clearing a Lazio free-kick and his lofted pass was deftly controlled by Pogba, who slotted a cool finish beyond Federico Marchetti.
The France international almost doubled his tally in the 29th minute, but his curled effort from the left-hand corner of the box struck the outside of the post with Marchetti well beaten.

Gianluigi Buffon was tested for the first time eight minutes prior to the interval when the goalkeeper gathered Candreva's awkward bouncing free-kick at the second attempt.Juve continued to assert their dominance after the break and doubled their advantage in the 55th minute through Tevez's well-taken strike.

Claudio Marchisio broke forward and, with Lazio exposed at the back, slipped a pass to the Argentine, who took a touch before planting a low finish into the bottom left-hand corner.

Candreva attempted to drag his side back into the match, but once again Buffon proved equal to his rasping drive from distance.Any hopes of an unlikely comeback were quickly dashed, however, as Pogba slotted in a low finish following a sublime reverse ball from Roberto Pereyra.

Padoin, who had been booked in the first half for handball, was then dismissed, but the visitors continued to look the more threatening.

Federico Mattiello, introduced in place of Pereyra in the wake of Padoin's sending off, brought a flying save out of Marchetti as Juve cruised to a fourth successive win in all competitions.

Barcelona 5-1 Sevilla: Messi smashes Liga goalscoring record with terrific treble

    633721_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi smashed the all-time Liga goalscoring record with a sublime hat-trick as Barcelona slaughtered Sevilla 5-1 at Camp Nou on Saturday night.

The prolific Argentine took the his tally of Spanish top-flight goals to 253 with a treble either side of the break, moving past Telmo Zarra's record of 251 that had stretched back to 1955.Messi, who made his Liga debut in 2004, has achieved the feat in 289 appearances - 11 more than the legendary Athletic Bilbao forward Zarra.

The 27-year-old found the net with a delightful first-half free-kick, placing it into the top corner to move level, before claiming the landmark outright in the second period as he capped a memorable evening. His first La Liga goal came as a 17-year-old against Albacete in May 2005, and he had not scored in the league since netting at home to Eibar on October 18.

But his wait for another career milestone ended in style as Barca continued their title push with a resounding success. After Messi's superb set-piece had ensured he would dominate the headlines, Jordi Alba's own goal at the start of the second half brought Sevilla level.

Barca were ahead again in the 49th minute as Neymar headed past Beto.Ivan Rakitic, who captained Sevilla to Europa League glory last season, nodded in with 25 minutes to go to make it 3-1, but the day belonged to Messi.

He slid a shot home with 18 minutes left to finally overtake Zarra, before completing his hat-trick and rounding off a stunning performance with a solo goal in the 78th minute.Such a comprehensive win always looked likely as Barcelona put Sevilla under plenty of early pressure.

Initially, they struggled to find a way past Beto, and Messi was presented with an opportunity he would have been expect to bury in the eighth minute.

On this occasion, he fired a tame effort straight at Sevilla's Portuguese goalkeeper before Luis Suarez was also denied three minutes later. But normal order was restored after 21 minutes, as Messi took centre stage. His sublime free-kick from just outside the area curled into the top-left corner.

Luis Enrique's men failed to seize the initiative from there, although Sevilla could not make the most of their increased possession as Carlos Bacca continued to look isolated in attack.

Barca should have gone into half-time 2-0 up, but Daniel Carrico produced a last-ditch block to deny Alba in the 44th minute and then, from the resulting corner, Beto kept Neymar at bay with his left foot.

Sevilla looked bright at the start of the second half and they were level in the 47th minute as Vitolo skipped past two challenges down the left and saw his cross turned in by Alba.

They were on level terms for just a few moments, though, as Neymar steered home Xavi's deep free-kick with a fine glancing header.Sevilla's forays forward in search of an equaliser ultimately proved to be their undoing, as Barca soon netted their third on the counter-attack, Rakitic heading in Suarez's cross to effectively end his former team's chances.

He chose not to celebrate, but Messi offered Sevilla no such courtesy - and rightly so - as he claimed his place in the history books. The Argentina star slotted in an easy finish after good work from Neymar in the 72nd minute, delighting the Camp Nou faithful.

Messi then added Barca's fifth and his third to round off an historic night, jinking past a couple of challenges before firing low after a clever interchange with Neymar.

:love:Arsenal 1-2 Manchester United: Rooney seals smash-and-grab win for Red Devils

    633331_heroa.jpg

Manchester United weathered a storm to secure a 2-1 victory that leaves Arsenal 15 points adrift of Premier League leaders Chelsea.

The hosts dominated for most of the opening hour at Emirates Stadium but found United goalkeeper David de Gea in excellent form.

The same could not be said for De Gea's Arsenal counterpart, Wojciech Szczesny, whose failure to deal with a ball into the box led directly to Kieran Gibbs' 56th-minute own goal on the end of Antonio Valencia's drilled cross, before the Pole was then forced off injured.

United then made light of high-profile defensive absentees by closing out their first competitive away win of the Louis van Gaal era, a triumph sealed by Wayne Rooney on the counter-attack five minutes from time.

It could have been three late on when Angel di Maria missed with a one-on-one breakaway opportunity, before Olivier Giroud gave Arsenal something to cheer with a superb finish on his return to the side after a fractured tibia.

There were, though, injuries to Jack Wilshere and Szczesny as Arsenal's miserable record against United was extended to only one win in 15 attempts - and the gap to Premier League leaders Chelsea was extended even further.

Danny Welbeck shook off a hamstring problem to lead the Arsenal attack against his former club, while Arsene Wenger preferred Mikel Arteta to Mathieu Flamini in midfield.

Van Gaal's latest response to United's defensive injury crisis was to name Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair in a re-shaped back three.

McNair produced an important early block to deny Welbeck and the England international headed over in the ninth minute as Arsenal began in the ascendancy.

Wilshere and Welbeck were then able to test United goalkeeper De Gea as his new-look defence allowed too much room on the edge of the penalty area.

In the 15th minute, De Gea atoned for a terrible clearance by keeping out Wilshere's resulting one-on-one opportunity when the midfielder should have left him with no chance.

Left wing-back Luke Shaw's departure with an ankle problem further increased United's defensive uncertainty and the alert De Gea had to race from his goalmouth to deny Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Wilshere was fortunate to remain on the field after thrusting his head towards Marouane Fellaini in a 29th-minute clash – a reflection on his frustration at Arsenal losing their early control of the match.

Di Maria was central to United’s improvement, flashing a speculative strike narrowly wide and then setting up Rooney, only for Arsenal full-back Calum Chambers to make a vital 38th-minute block.

An excellent pass with the outside of his foot from Oxlade-Chamberlain sent Welbeck racing into the United box from the left-hand side early in the second half, but De Gea was equal to the task once more.

A misunderstanding between McNair and Fellaini had Wilshere racing through on the United goal again soon afterwards, but a challenge involving both United players resulted in ankle damage and an early end to the Arsenal man's afternoon.

To compound Wenger's worries, his team fell behind in the 56th minute.

Poland international Szczesny failed to deal with a cross from Shaw's replacement, Ashley Young. In doing so he knocked Gibbs to the floor and the defender put the ball through his own net when Valencia drove a cross back into the area.

Szczesny injured himself in the process to bring about an unplanned Premier League debut for substitute goalkeeper Damian Martinez.

In-form forward Alexis Sanchez placed a header into De Gea's hands as Arsenal sought a response and Santi Cazorla, on for Wilshere, had a rasping effort saved.

Arsenal committed increasing numbers forward late on, meaning Rooney was able to race onto Di Maria's pass before lifting the ball beyond Martinez, and his team up to fourth in the table.

Di Maria then passed up a glorious chance to add a third on the break and Giroud, back in the side after his fractured leg, smashed a powerful shot into the top corner to make United sweat midway through an elongated nine minutes of stoppage time, but there was to be no comeback.

Atalanta 1-2 Roma: Ljajic and Nainggolan seal comeback

    633381_heroa.jpg

Roma produced a stirring comeback as goals from Adem Ljajic and Radja Nainggolan cancelled out an early Maximiliano Moralez opener in their 2-1 victory away to Atalanta.

The Giallorossi went into the game knowing victory would move them level on points with Serie A leaders Juventus ahead of their late kick off against Lazio.
But Rudi Garcia's men got off to the worst possible start when Moralez finished superbly after Cristian Raimondi had twisted and turned past Ashley Cole before finding the Argentine inside the 18-yard box.

To Roma's credit, they stuck to their task and were on level terms on 23 minutes when Ljajic cut inside and produced a smart finish inside the box, before Nainggolan found the back of the net just before half-time to seal the win.

Roma began in the worst possible fashion as Raimondi left Cole for dead and pulled back for Moralez, who smashed the ball in off the bar from close range.
Daniele Baselli then rattled the woodwork again as his drive from distance spared Morgan De Sanctis for his error from a cross.

Ljajic drew Roma level in some style, however, cutting inside and firing into the bottom corner following a strong run from deep from Miralem Pjanic. And Ljajic helped the Giallorossi take the lead shortly before the break, setting up Nainggolan on the break to sidefoot home from inside the area.

Atalanta increased the pressure in the second half, with Moralez twice coming close, but Roma ultimately held on for maximum points as Richmond Boakye saw red late on following a second booking for dissent.
