Arsenal 2-0 Borussia Dortmund: Sanogo & Alexis send Gunners through

    653031_heroa.jpg

Arsenal guaranteed themselves a place in the last 16 of the Champions League thanks to a 2-0 win at home against Borussia Dortmund.

Drafted into the starting XI after Danny Welbeck's injury, Yaya Sanogo sealed the perfect start when he finished through the legs of Roman Weidenfeller after 73 seconds, his first competitive goal for the Gunners.

Alexis Sanchez then curled a fine shot past the keeper from just outside the edge of the penalty area in the 57th minute and a composed Arsenal were able to hold off Dortmund's attempts at a fightback thereafter.

Arsenal needed just a point to be assured of qualification but victory leaves them with a chance of sealing top spot in the group and avoiding a potentially tricky last-16 tie.

For Dortmund - already well off the pace behind leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga - defeat ended their perfect record in the competition this season as a side missing influential forward Marco Reus through injury struggled to make much of an impact.

Both teams have seen their ranks depleted by injuries this season and there was further concern for the hosts as first captain Mikel Arteta and then Sanogo were forced off during the second period. That did little to disrupt their performance, however, as Wenger's men comfortably held on for their first win and clean sheet in four matches.

They were given an ideal start when Sanogo put them in front with the first action of note in the second minute. The striker exchanged passes with Santi Cazorla - who came in following an ankle problem for Jack Wilshere - and, despite looking to be offside when the final ball was played, the Frenchman slotted a low finish through the legs of Weidenfeller.

Sanogo could have doubled his tally soon afterwards but he was ponderous in possession and saw his eventual shot blocked by Matthias Ginter.

Lukasz Piszczek flashed a dangerous cross across the face of goal in the 20th minute but the delivery was just out of reach of a sliding Ciro Immobile.

Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, in the side due to Wojciech Szczesny's hip injury, produced a fine sprawling save to deny Henrikh Mkhitaryan as Dortmund continued to carry a threat with half-time approaching.

Alexis, who had been relatively quiet in the first period, brought a smart save out of Weidenfeller a minute later with a stinging low drive from just outside the area.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain almost marked his 100th appearance for Arsenal with a spectacular goal but his dipping volley crashed back off the crossbar with Weidenfeller motionless.

The hosts did not have to wait long to double their lead, however, as Alexis cut in on his right foot and curled a delightful finish into the bottom right-hand corner in the 57th minute.

Oxlade-Chamberlain fizzed a shot narrowly over from the corner of the box midway through the second half, before Martinez denied Dortmund substitute Adrian Ramos with his legs in stoppage time as Arsenal sealed their place in the last 16 alongside their already-qualified opponents.

Ludogorets 2-2 Liverpool: Draw sets up must-win Basel clash for Reds

    653571_heroa.jpg

Liverpool's poor start to the season plunged to new depths as Georgi Terziev's late goal earned Ludogorets a 2-2 Champions League draw.

Terziev headed home his first goal for the club with two minutes remaining as the Bulgarians claimed a famous Group B point at Stadion Vasil Levski on Wednesday.

There was an early warning sign of what was to come for the English side when Dani Abalo capitalised on a dreadful error from under-fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to put Ludogorets in front inside five minutes.

But after some comical defending ensured Rickie Lambert marked his first start in this competition with a goal, Liverpool appeared to have turned the tables when Jordan Henderson swept home at the end of a fine move just before half-time.

The poor defending that has plagued Liverpool throughout this campaign reared its head again, though, as an unmarked Terziev nodded home a well-worked corner at the back post two minutes from time.

Terziev's intervention did not change the fact Liverpool can reach the last 16 by beating Basel at home in matchday six, although they would have expected to end their recent slump against competition rookies Ludogorets.

The Bulgarian team, meanwhile, must overcome champions Real Madrid - who have won all five games so far - to have any chance of going through.

The Premier League side endured a nightmare start as the home side took an immediate lead thanks to an error from goalkeeper Mignolet. The Belgian failed to hold on to a Fabio Espinho's 20-yard strike that was straight at him, gifting prowling striker Abalo the simplest of tap-ins.Yet seeming to show pity on their beleaguered opponents, Ludogorets gifted Liverpool a way back into the game five minutes later.

Lambert was the beneficiary, capitalising on indecision in the hosts' defence to nod beyond onrushing goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov and into the corner.
The Bulgarians responded impressively, however, as they continued to press forward with confidence.

An error-strewn game nearly brought another costly one as Kolo Toure turned Abalo's cross narrowly past his own post. But Liverpool regrouped thereafter and took the lead thanks to a superbly worked goal eight minutes before half-time.Raheem Sterling was the architect, sending a pin-point low cross to the far post - where Henderson burst in and expertly lobbed Stoyanov.

Ludogorets were not able to begin the second half the same way they did the first, although they enjoyed the majority of possession.Espinho had the best chance of the early exchanges, curling a 20-yard free-kick harmlessly over the crossbar.

Liverpool continued to invite pressure, though, with Marcelinho's long-range effort deflected just wide off Joe Allen. There was a palpable sense of tension in Brendan Rodgers' side's play as the final whistle drew closer, especially when Sterling hit straight at Stoyanov when one-on-one with the shot-stopper.

And that miss was to prove incredibly costly as Svetoslav Dyakov flicked on a corner to leave Terziev with an easy task and heap further misery on Rodgers.

Atletico Madrid 4-0 Olympiakos: Mandzukic hat-trick fires hosts into next round

    654261_heroa.jpg

A Mario Mandzukic hat-trick secured a 4-0 win over Olympiakos as Atletico Madrid strolled into the Champions League last 16.

La Liga champions Atletico suffered a shock 3-2 defeat in Greece on the opening matchday in Group A, but a repeat never looked likely at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday.

Atletico youth team graduate Roberto Jimenez endured a moment to forget in the Olympiakos goal when he gifted Raul Garcia the opener before Mandzukic put some early misses behind him to take centre stage.

Former Spain Under-21 international Alberto Botia missed his clearance to leave the Croatia international with a 38th-minute tap in.A pair of second-half headers secured the matchball for Mandzukic by the 65th minute as Olympiakos' defensive struggles from crosses dealt them continued damage and Atletico revisited the rampant form that took them all the way to last season's final .

Atletico pinned Olympiakos deep inside their own half during a high-tempo opening when Juanfran and Arda Turan enjoyed plenty of joy down the right flank.
Mandzukic twice came close to finding a decisive touch on the end of low crosses before their pressure told in the ninth minute.

Juanfran and Turan combined for the latter to fire in another low centre that was blocked, but Roberto inexplicably cleared with his feet, straight back to the midfielder, who made no mistake this time in picking out Raul Garcia to turn home.

Koke looped a 17th-minute header over, but, as Atletico's intensity dropped, Olympiakos' former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal sent a volley over from a poorly cleared corner.Roberto partially atoned for his earlier error by turning a skidding low drive from Cristian Ansaldi around his left post.

Mandzukic's touch deserted him, allowing Abidal to extinguish a promising situation for the hosts 10 minute before the break, but he made amends by slotting home when Ansaldi's curling delivery from the left found a way through Alberto Botia.Turan darted in from the flank and away from Arthur Masuaku in the half's final minute, but Roberto was down well to thwart the Turkey international.

A muscle strain meant Atletico midfielder Tiago was replaced by Mario Suarez for the second half, while visiting coach and ex-Real Madrid star Michel sent on David Fuster and Pajtim Kasami - the latter for ineffective Ibrahim Afellay - in a bid to turn the tide.

Botia offered a better demonstration of his defensive talents when he forced Mandzukic wide in the 59th minute and slide in to turn his shot behind. But the forward did not have to wait long for his second, heading clinically beyond Roberto after Turan floated a delightful ball into the area.

The hat-trick came from another cross, this time of the dead-ball variety, as Roberto's touch on Mandzukic's header from Gabi's free-kick proved insufficient.
Atletico's hero departed to a standing ovation with 20 minutes to play - replacement Griezmann having an 88th-minute effort chalked off due to fellow substitute Raul Jimenez impeding Roberto from an offside position.

Michel will hope Atletico display similar form in their final group game against Juventus, as a victory over Malmo would send Olympiakos through in second place if the Italian side are defeated.

Basel 0-1 Real Madrid: Ronaldo earns Blancos club-record 15th successive win

    653831_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal of the game as Real Madrid sealed top spot in Champions League Group B and racked up a club-record 15th successive win courtesy of a 1-0 victory at Basel.

The prolific Portugal forward matched Real legend Raul's tally of 71 Champions League goals with a first-half strike at Jakob-Park on Wednesday.

Ronaldo's latest goal was his 26th in what is proving to be another outstanding season and helped Real match the run of wins achieved in the 1960-61 and 2011-12 campaigns.

Gareth Bale struck by the crossbar in the second half and Ronaldo missed a great chance to register his 72nd Champions League goal, which would have left him two adrift of new record holder Lionel Messi.

Real were not at their brilliant best, but they will take some beating as they attempt to defend their European crown, while Basel head to Liverpool for their final group game next month needing to avoid defeat to progress.

Keylor Navas was handed a Champions League debut as Iker Casillas dropped to the bench and Ancelotti also made three changes to his defence, with Alvaro Arbeloa, Fabio Coentrao and Raphael Varane replacing Daniel Carvajal, Marcelo and Pepe.

Derlis Gonzalez, Mohamed El Nenny and Fabian Schar came into the Basel starting line-up at the expense of Matias Delgado, Marcelo Diaz and Yoichiro Kakitani.

The Swiss champions did not allow Madrid to settle as the game started at a frantic pace and it took Ronaldo 20 minutes to have his first sight of goal, letting fly with his left foot from a tight angle but shooting straight at goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.

Basel showed plenty of endeavour, but they were behind 10 minutes before the break when Karim Benzema surged forward and cut the ball back from the byline to give Ronaldo the simple task of slotting home from close range.

The hosts responded and Gonzalez must have been relieved to be flagged for offside when he somehow failed to hit the target from inside the six-yard box after Shkelzen Gashi had picked him out.

Basel were almost caught out by a brisk Madrid counterattack four minutes into the second half, but James Rodriguez's teasing cross cross from the left flashed across the face of the goal.

Vaclik got down to his right to keep out a long-range free-kick from Ronaldo as Los Blancos started firing on all cylinders following a disappointing first half.

Gashi appealed for a penalty after he cut inside and unleashed a shot which appeared to strike Sergio Ramos on the hand before flying over the crossbar, but referee Milorad Mazic signalled for a corner.

Breel Embolo then had a great chance to equalise after 66 minutes when he raced into the penalty area, but Navas did well to narrow the angle and turn the ball behind for a corner.

Bale almost sealed the points 16 minutes from time, but his thunderous strike came back off the crossbar, then Ronaldo spurned a golden opportunity to add his second goal when he side-footed wide after the Welshman had set him up.

The game was halted when a number of fans came onto the pitch before Ahmed Hamoudi wasted a great chance in time added on, as Paulo Sousa's side saw their eight-game unbeaten home record come to an end.

Ronaldo equals Raul's Champions League tally

    654321_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo equalled Raul's Champions League goals tally by netting the winner in Wednesday night's 1-0 victory at Basel.

The Portugal international struck 10 minutes before the break in Switzerland, tapping home a cross from Karim Benzema for his 71st goal in Europe's premier club competition. As a result, Ronaldo now shares second place in the all-time goalscorers' standings with Madrid icon Raul and is just three shy of record-holder Lionel Messi, who hit a hat-trick in Barcelona's 4-0 win at APOEL on Tuesday evening.

Ronaldo, 29, racked up his 71 goals in just 108 games, whereas Raul needed 142 games to reach the mark.Messi, meanwhile, has struck 74 times in just 91 Champions League appearances, at a ratio of 0.81 goals per game.

Ronaldo, though, will be hoping to close the gap to the Argentine attacker during the final round of the group stage, with Madrid set to host Ludogorets on matchday six and Barcelona welcoming Paris Saint-Germain to Camp Nou.

Mancini: Vidic's Serie A struggles are normal

    651891_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini insists that there is nothing unusual in the fact that Nemanja Vidic is struggling at Inter this season.

The Serbian defender was expected to make a major impact at San Siro following his free transfer from Manchester United during the summer but he has been heavily criticised for a string of error-strewn performances thus far.

However, former Manchester City boss Mancini, who replaced Walter Mazzarri as coach during the international break, is in no doubt that the former Red Devils captain will soon settle in Serie A."I've known him since the two of us were in Manchester and I'm sure he'll be useful to us," he told Inter's official website on Wednesday.

"It's quite normal to encounter difficulties coming here because Italian football is totally different to the Premier League."

While Vidic is currently floundering, Mateo Kovacic is flourishing, with the Croatia international earning rave reviews for his performances in the Inter midfield.
Consequently, the 20-year-old is being linked with a move with a number of Europe's elite, but Mancini is nonplussed by the attention that the playmaker is receiving.

"It's not surprising that he should receive offers," the former Galatasaray boss mused. "That happens to all good players."We're lucky to have him here with us. We need to help him fulfil his potential so that he can really make a difference in the years to come."

Mancini will be hoping that Kovacic can inspire Inter to victory in Thursday's Europa League clash with Dnipro, with the Nerazzurri needing a victory to clinch top spot in Group F.

Indeed, the 49-year-old trainer insists that he intends to name a strong starting line-up for the game at the Giuseppe Meazza - despite the fact that his troops face a tricky trip to Roma on Sunday.

"I may change a few things around but we must concentrate on one game at a time," Mancini explained. "We'll put out our best team. There'll be time to worry about Roma later."The league and Europa League are also two routes we have available to us if we're to get back into the Champions League and we must succeed in one of them.

"The Europa League is an important competition because the winner qualifies for the Champions League and because it means you get to play the European Super Cup."

Suarez's first goal boosted Barcelona - Pedro

    650411_heroa.jpg

Barcelona attacker Pedro has voiced his delight with Luis Suarez's first goal for the club in their 4-0 Champions League win over APOEL on Tuesday.

The Uruguay international had yet to find the net for his new club in an official game since his summer transfer from Liverpool, but he opened his Barcelona account at last after 27 minutes of play.

Lionel Messi netted the side's remaining three goals to take his tally in European club football's elite competition to 74 and Pedro was equally pleased to see the Argentine become the Champions League's all-time top scorer."Messi's record and Suarez's first goal mean a lot to the team," Pedro told reporters."It's a great joy, a confidence boost - there's lots of harmony. It's really what we want for the team: to be united. Everybody is after the same objectives.

"We are playing at a high level now and we hope to keep that rhythm for the upcoming weeks and into the new year as well."We started the season tentatively somehow but now we are doing well physically and emotionally and have confidence. We want to stay on this path.

"The team is in great shape right now, in all aspects, and it would be great to continue like this until the end of the season."Barcelona resume domestic action away to Valencia on Sunday.

Colombia boss Pekerman eyes revenge over Brazil

    423489_heroa.jpg

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman is eyeing revenge against Brazil at next year's Copa America.Monday's draw for South American football's premier continental competition saw Colombia placed alongside Brazil, Peru and Venezuela in Group C.

Colombia were famously beaten 2-1 by Brazil in the World Cup quarter-final earlier this year in a game best remembered for the controversy surrounding Juan Camilo Zuniga's challenge on Neymar, which ruled the Barcelona star out of the rest of the tournament with a fractured vertebra. But Pekerman feels his team are capable of turning the tables on Dunga's side when they meet in Chile in June 2015.

"We knew we were going to face one of the big teams of South America in the group stage, the top seeds," Pekerman said after the draw in Vina del Mar.
"We get Brazil again - as always, it is a positive, because it is an opponent we know very well.

"They are in another process [Dunga took over from Luiz Felipe Scolari following the World Cup], we just played a friendly match [Brazil beat Colombia 1-0 in Miami back in September] and they are now in an important streak with a new project."It's still early in its journey, so we will see how to face them after our first game. It will be a crucial game that will define our championship."Hopefully [we can beat Brazil] - we want to do it. We know the strengths they have, but we will prepare well.

"We will take advantage of past experiences. We know it is a difficult game, but we have to fight a lot to get that win."Dunga's assistant coach Andrei, meanwhile, has targeted the regaining of the Copa America title that Brazil last won in 2007.

"In a competition like [the] Copa America, Brazil has to play looking for the title of the competition," he explained."Like any other competition, Brazil has to play and struggle for the title."

Mancini: I would love to manage Arsenal

    602861_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini has revealed he wanted to manage Arsenal but admits he is still open to the possibility of succeeding Arsene Wenger.

The Italian, who turns 50 on Thursday, guided Manchester City to their first Premier League title in 44 years in 2012 before being sacked the following season.

Mancini recently returned to Inter for his second stint as manager. In his first spell at the club which lasted four years, he won three Serie A titles.

“I would have loved to have managed Arsenal, a club with a special charm. But there is still time,” Mancini told Il Corriere dello Sport.

“Where do I see myself at 60? As coach of the Italian national team.”

:yes:Henry: We'll never see another Messi

    649551_heroa.jpg

Thierry Henry says that the footballing world should cherish every remaining second of Lionel Messi's career because the Frenchman feels that we will never see the likes of the Argentine again.

Messi became La Liga's all-time leading goalscorer by netting a hat-trick for Barcelona in Saturday's 5-1 win over Sevilla, thus taking his tally to 253 in just 289 games.

Just three days later, the 27-year-old netted another history-marking treble, this time against APOEL, to claim outright possession of the Champions League record from Real Madrid icon Raul.

Ex-Barcelona attacker Henry watched Messi break both records on television and he could not have been happier for his former team-mate, admitting his delight at seeing the four-time Ballon d'Or winner make his critics once again look foolish.

"Messi is doing things for Barca and the football world in general that we will never see again - let alone someone who does everything that Messi has done in such a short time," Henry told ARA.

"I loved seeing him so happy after scoring [his record-breaking] goal against Sevilla. I was lucky to have been watching it at home and you could tell how much he wanted it."I do not understand how there are people who can doubt Messi. It seems crazy to wonder what's happening with Messi if he doesn't score in one game.

"He's a great player, a good person and an example to always just play the opponent you're facing.

"We should enjoy him while we can because the day he leaves Barca, the people will realise what he is and how great a player he has been."Henry, who is currently plying his trade in MLS with New York Red Bulls, was a part of the Barcelona side that won the Champions League in 2009.

Mandzukic: Atletico can beat anyone in Europe

    654971_heroa.jpg

Mario Mandzukic declared Atletico Madrid capable of beating any side in Europe after the Spanish side stormed into the last 16 of the Champions League with a 4-0 demolition of Olympiakos. The Croatia international netted a hat-trick at the Vicente Calderon, after Raul Garcia had opened the scoring, as last season's runners-up overwhelmed their Greek opponents to qualify for the knockout stage with one game to spare.

A point at Juventus next month will guarantee Atleti top spot in Group A and Mandzukic insists that Diego Simeone's side are ready for any opponent in the next phase.

"It's a wonderful feeling to score a hat-trick, but the most important thing is that we won and secured our place in the round of 16," the striker is quoted as saying by Uefa's official website.

"In the knockout stages it's always 50-50 but we're showing that we are a really good team, so you never know."We're able to beat anyone. We're enjoying ourselves and winning – that's the most important thing."

Meanwhile, Simeone is enthused with the way in which his revamped side are starting to gel after a summer in which they lost Thibaut Courtois, Diego Costa and Filipe Luis to Chelsea."We have produced some good performances recently," the Argentine told reporters after the game. "We had continuity in our game and we were focused on the areas where we could hurt them.

"Intensity is the key for this team. After a tough beginning [with the defeat at Olympiakos], it has been a great effort from my players to take us to the next round."That affirms the work of this squad and how the team have been reinvented with 10 new players to keep on being competitive.

"There are many games to play and the most important thing is the quality of the minutes every player plays."Many players are in good shape and it's not easy to be in the starting line-up."

Wenger: Arteta calf injury doesn't look good

    589191_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger believes Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta will "be out for a while" with the calf injury he sustained during the 2-0 victory against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Yaya Sanogo and Alexis Sanchez were both on target as the Gunners guaranteed their place in the Champions League last-16 with a match to spare.

Arteta, however, limped off during the second half at the Emirates Stadium and Wenger is not optimistic about his chances of being fit for Saturday's match at West Brom.

"That doesn’t look good, it’s the calf," he told Sky Sports. "It’s very difficult to take on the chin because we are going into many games and you need everybody available, but I think Arteta will be out for a while."

Wenger also praised Sanogo, who opened the scoring after just two minutes but picked up a hamstring injury in the second half, and says he is still unsure if Jack Wilshere will need surgery after injuring his ankle against Manchester United on Saturday.

"I liked what he did tonight because we decided to go long to him and he protected very well the ball, what he did on the first goal was class, his link-up play with Cazorla, but unfortunately he got injured.

"Wilshere sees a specialist tomorrow, finally, and we will know more tomorrow night. The specialist will decide [if he needs an operation]."

The Frenchman was pleased with his side's performance against the Bundesliga outfit, and insisted there was not much difference between this match and the loss to Manchester United.

"The focus [pleased me most]," he added. "Defending well together. We had a similar game to Saturday, we had to focus really well not to give any chances away and overall it was a committed game and maybe we were defensively better tonight.

"We are a team who likes to go forward and sometimes when you feel you dominate completely the game you are maybe a victim of that, and forget to take precautions to defend well but I think you learn from the games and we have done a lot better tonight."

Benzema: Ronaldo not obsessed with Champions League record

    654271_heroa.jpg

Karim Benzema dismissed the suggestion that Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is obsessed with the Champions League goalscoring record after Wednesday night's 1-0 win at Basel.

The Portuguese star and Barcelona rival Lionel Messi were in a race to take over as the tournament's all-time leading marksman as they closed in on Raul's tally of 71 goals around the same time.

The Argentine broke the former Spain striker's record by bagging a hat-trick in Barcelona's 4-0 victory at APOEL on Tuesday, taking his overall tally to 74 goals.
Ronaldo moved level with Raul on 71 goals by netting the only goal at St. Jakob-Park, but Benzema denied that his colleague is determined to overhaul Messi at the top of the standings.

"Cristiano doesn't ask me to pass him the ball in order for him to break the record," Benzema told beIN Sports after teeing up the Portuguese for the winner in Switzerland."Frankly, he doesn't ask for anything. But when he's well positioned on the pitch, I offer him the ball."

Madrid's victory not only sealed top spot in Group B for Carlo Ancelotti's men, it also saw the club from the Spanish capital complete a home-and-away double over Basel.

However, while the Blancos cruised to a 5-1 victory in their first meeting at the Santiago Bernabeu on matchday one, the reigning European champions were made to work harder for all three points in Switzerland.

"It was not an easy game," Benzema acknowledged. "It wasn't the same side as the first game. It was much more complicated."Meanwhile, Keylor Navas was a happy man after keeping a clean sheet in a rare start in goal for the Costa Rica international at the expensie of regular No.1 Iker Casillas.

"It's a tournament that everyone loves to play in so I'm happy that we won and that I was able to contribute a bit to the victory," the shot-stopper stated."I am calm, working hard. Little by little I'm getting more opportunities."Everyone wants to play some more, but we must go step by step."

    Klopp: Arsenal deserved their win

    654601_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp feels Arsenal fully deserved their 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Yaya Sanogo gifted the Premier League side an early lead before Alexis Sanchez made it two after the break and Klopp has admitted that his men were simply not good enough.

"It was the worst possible start to concede such a quick goal," Klopp said at a press conference. "There were situations and moments when we did what we wanted but those periods were very short.

"Too many times we were not that great and Arsenal were the deserved winners tonight. We just weren’t good enough.

"We could have done better, we were not courageous tonight. There are 1000 reasons why we were not that good tonight. We have to work.

"That’s the plan. Work always works in life. We don’t party between the games, we always try to improve things.

"We have to admit we are not as confident as in positive periods but you can work hard to get to deserve the luck in life. We will get it back. We don’t need the perfect football, we just need good results."

Dortmund remain first in Group D with 12 points from five games, with Arsenal occupying second spot with 10 points.

Tottenham 1-0 Partizan: Pitch invasion mars win as Spurs qualify for knockout rounds

    659211_heroa.jpg

Tottenham sealed their place in the knockout rounds of the Europa League by beating Partizan 1-0 in a match that was briefly interrupted by repeated pitch invasions.

From midway through the first half, apparent participants in a marketing stunt disrupted the game, with the third occasion leading to a 10-minute stoppage as the referee withdrew the players from the field.

After the resumption, a goal early in the second half from Benjamin Stambouli proved the difference, the midfielder capitalising on the rebound from one of several missed chances by Roberto Soldado.

Substitute Harry Kane thought that he had made it two in the late stages but his effort was rightly ruled out for offside, while Stambouli should have had a second in a subsequent two-on-one counterattack.

Tottenham's qualification from Group C means that top spot will be up for grabs when they visit Besiktas on matchday six. Spurs are two points ahead of the Turkish side.

Partizan, who were already eliminated prior to this game, round off their campaign with a home match against Asteras Tripolis - who drew 2-2 with Besiktas on Thursday.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris returned from a Europa League suspension for the hosts but Federico Fazio was missing due to a ban of his own. Aaron Lennon was given a start in his 400th career appearance as Soldado led the line - the Spaniard dragging an effort just wide in the first two minutes.

Tottenham were sluggish in the first half, though, and Partizan - who had not won in their past 16 games in European group stages - caused them occasional problems on the break.

Petar Grbic stormed down the right and saw his cross clip the shoulder of striker Petar Skuletic, while Danko Lazovic chested down Sasa Ilic's hooked ball before shooting narrowly wide under pressure in the 18th minute.

Soldado just missed Erik Lamela's ball across the face of goal but the most animated that the White Hart Lane crowd got during a lacklustre beginning was after two pitch invasions in quick succession.

The situation descended into farce after the third, though, and, once play finally resumed, Lamela fired wide in the 11th minute of stoppage time to end an elongated first half.

Spurs did not have to wait long to take the lead after the break as Stambouli - who played in Soldado - pounced after the striker had been denied by the woodwork.

It just was not Soldado's night - he was one-on-one with Partizan goalkeeper Milan Lukac - but could only shoot straight at the onrushing Serbian, while Lamela missed the target on two further occasions.

The competition's joint top-scorer heading into the match - Harry Kane - was introduced as Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino sought to kill off the game with a second goal.

Kane quickly produced a powerful free kick, only for Lukac to be equal to the task, and the England Under-21s forward also had an effort correctly ruled out for offside with seven minutes left.

Spurs then had Lloris to thank as, with four minutes left, the Frenchman made an outstanding reaction save to keep out a header from the unmarked Vladimir Volkov.

And the stop proved crucial as Stambouli's goal sealed Tottenham's European progression - despite Lamela fluffing his lines and shooting wide after the Frenchman strangely elected to pass rather than shoot in the dying stages. Lamela also saw a curling effort tipped over by Lukac but it mattered little.

Inter 2-1 Dnipro: Osvaldo fires Nerazzurri into last 32

    659151_heroa.jpg

Inter bounced back from an early scare to defeat Dnipro 2-1 on Thursday and reach the last 32 of the Europa League.

Inter were made to work in order to give coach Roberto Mancini a perfect 50th birthday present after the visitors claimed an early lead through Ruslan Rotan's volley.

Dnipro should have doubled their lead before the interval, only for Samir Handanovic to save yet another penalty, from Yevhen Konoplyanka. Zdravko Kuzmanovic equalised for Inter after 30 minutes, but the Serie A side were handed another setback within a minute of the second half starting as captain Andrea Ranocchia received a second booking.

Nevertheless, Osvaldo found the net in the 50th minute and further Handanovic heroics, together with a goalline clearance and a disallowed Dnipro goal, ensured Inter hung on and stretched their unbeaten home run in European competition to 10 matches.

They are now guaranteed to play in the round of 32, while Dnipro, Qarabag and Saint-Etienne could all claim the second qualifying spot in the final round of pool matches.

For the first European game of his second spell in charge, Mancini made three changes from the derby draw with Milan, including recalls for Osvaldo and Hernanes.

The Ukranian side settled quicker than their hosts and shocked San Siro after 15 minutes as Juan Jesus was caught in possession and the ball eventually found Konoplyanka. His venomous strike was parried away by Handanovic, but Rotan followed up to volley in from close range.

It was exactly what the visitors deserved and Inter skipper Ranocchia was lucky to escape a second yellow card when he cynically blocked Nikola Kalinic in the 24th minute.

Dnipro's lead should have been doubled when Yevhen Cheberyachko was bundled over in the area by Fredy Guarin and the referee pointed to the spot.

However, penalty-saving specialist Handanovic guessed right to repel Konoplyanka's poor effort for his fourth penalty save this season.

Inter made the most of their reprieve on the half hour when a Hernanes free-kick was not properly cleared and fell to Kuzmanovic, who stabbed home inside the area.

Mancini's men were revitalised and four minutes later, a flowing move ended with the onrushing Yuto Nagatomo lashing wide under pressure from Denys Boyko. The challenge forced the Inter player off with a shoulder injury.

Dnipro soon reminded Inter of their own threat, Douglas putting a free header over when well placed. Inter's plans were then thrown into chaos within a minute of the restart as Ranocchia was beaten to the ball by Rotan and brought down the Dnipro goalscorer in the process, earning a second yellow card.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Inter went ahead when Osvaldo beat the offside trap to latch onto a Hernanes pass and slotted home with ease from eight yards for his sixth goal of the season.

Dnipro were not done, though, and somehow failed to equalise two minutes later when Kalinic was superbly denied by Handanovic and the Croatian's rebound was hacked off the line by Juan.

The away side thought they had an equaliser two minutes from time when Konoplyanka's delightful free kick was headed in by Yevhen Seleznyov but the offside flag was up, much to Inter's relief.
