Villarreal 2-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: Xhaka leveller bags draw for table-topping visitors

    659261_heroa.jpg

Villarreal and Borussia Monchengladbach shared the spoils in Group A, with both first-place candidates going head to head in a vibrant and high tempo affair at El Madrigal.

Goals from Luciano Vietto and Denis Cheryshev gave the hosts the lead twice, but Raffael and a stunner from Granit Xhaka ensured that the away side didn’t go home empty-handed.

Despite the home side starting brighter, Gladbach carved out a fourth-minute chance. Good interplay between Hrgota and Raffael inside the penalty area looked destined to result in the opening goal, but the Brazilian’s questionable decision to tee up the advancing Ibrahima Traore saw the winger slice a terrible effort well wide of the far upright from 20 yards out.

On 16 minutes, however, it was Gladbach’s turn to hear warning bells, as Raffael was forced into defensive action at the far post, after a corner delivery was deflected towards goal by the forehead of Villarreal captain Bruno Soriano.

Continued pressure from Marcelino’s men eventually took its toll, with the hosts finding the elusive breakthrough goal in the 26th minute. After good work down the left-hand side from Jaume Costa, the left-back slid an incisive pass inside for Vietto to chase. Holding off the challenge of Roel Brouwers well, the former Racing Club youngster kept his composure to slide a tidy finish under the advancing body of Yann Sommer.

The second half started much the same as the first, with Sommer forced into action on 48 minutes. After good combination play from Mario and Cani down the right-hand side, the Swiss goalkeeper got down excellently to his near post to deny the latter with a smart stop.

Goalkeeping heroics were put on hold for Gladbach’s equaliser on 55 minutes, however, with Asenjo pushing a 30-yard effort from Raffael into the far corner. Despite having the ball well within reach, the Villarreal shot-stopper fluffed his lines entirely, giving Lucien Favre’s men an undeserved equaliser with a helping hand.

Courtesy of another defensive gaffe, Villarreal were able to restore their lead on 63 minutes, after Julian Korb failed to deal with a cross from the right by Vietto. A poor touch from the right-back gifted the loose ball to Cheryshev, who made no mistake by rifling a powerful finish into the bottom right corner.

There was nothing that any goalkeeper in the world could do about Gladbach’s second, however. After winning a free kick all of 35 yards from goal, Xhaka stepped up to smash an absolute thunderbolt off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net, leaving Asenjo as a heap on the turf.

Patrick Herrmann saw a low drive crack off the foot of the near post on 82 minutes, as Asenjo again placed question marks over his goalkeeping ability, with both sides trading half chances in the late stages, in a real game of two halves.

The two exhausted sides were happy to take a point against tough opposition at the final whistle, but Villarreal might just be kicking themselves given the nature of Gladbach’s two equalising goals, as three points would have set them up comfortably for the final round of Group A fixtures.

Guingamp 1-2 Fiorentina: Marin and Babacar ensure Viola first place

    658071_heroa.jpg

Fiorentina held on to a well-fought 2-1 victory over Guingamp to secure first place in Group K of the Europa League, despite playing the second half with 10 men.

The Serie A side stormed into a two-goal lead early on after strikes from Marko Marin and Khouma Babacar put Viola in the ascendancy but a late first-half penalty threatened their control of the game.

Claudio Beauvue dispatched from the spot but the hosts failed to take advantage of Jose Maria Basanta’s dismissal.

Guingamp made three changes from defeat to Rennes with Baissama Sankoh, Moustapha Diallo and Sambou Yatabare coming in for Benjamin Angoua, Tounousse Sankhare and Christophe Mandanne.

Vincenzo Montella, who has made numerous alterations to his formation this season, played with five across the middle and made 10 changes with only Jose Maria Basanta retaining his place.

His side opened the scoring early on when Babacar’s shot was blocked and cleared off the line, before Alberto Aquilani set up Marin who drilled his effort into the net from close range.

And that scoreline was doubled just moments later after a pin-point cross from Juan Manuel Vargas on the left picked out Babacar, running into the far post, to turn the ball into the net.

Fiorentina looked set to take a comfortable lead into the interval but a challenge from Basanta on Marveaux drew a red card and a penalty, which Beauvue calmly dispatched a minute before time.

The hosts came close in the second half as Yatabare crashed a header off the bar from close range but Montella’s men held on to secure a top-seed path into the knockout stages.

Wolfsburg 0-2 Everton: Lukaku & Mirallas seal Group H top spot

    658181_heroa.jpg

With their progression to the Europa League knockouts confirmed before kick-off, Everton won 2-0 at Wolfsburg to ensure that they will top their group, though they did so against the run of play.

Romelu Lukaku stumbled but nevertheless forced his way through to finish on the counterattack as the Toffees took the lead towards the end of the first half, with the hosts having earlier had a goal chalked off due to an offside flag.

Wolfsburg had another such mishap when Nicklas Bendtner rightly had an effort ruled out and Lukaku then turned creator with a fine through-ball from which Kevin Mirallas advanced and slotted home a second, making up for an appalling Aiden McGeady miss just after the hour.

Wolfsburg, second in the Bundesliga, will join them in going through if they avoid defeat at Lille in the final group match, although their progress might have already been assured had the impressive Ivan Perisic not seen his 22nd-minute effort wrongly disallowed.

Perisic flashed a volley across the face of goal in the second minute and the same player hooked into the side netting when Kevin De Bruyne's clever through-ball caught out Tony Hibbert.

Sylvain Distin should have put Everton in front in the 13th minute when he headed Luke Garbutt's corner into the turf and home goalkeeper Diego Benaglio tipped onto his crossbar.

The hosts sprung up the other end on the counterattack and, from a corner of their own, Tim Howard brilliantly kept out Aaron Hunt's first-time strike.

Perisic and his team-mates were understandably frustrated in the 22nd minute as the Croatia international netted from Bendtner's flick, only to be incorrectly ruled offside.

Everton midfielder James McCarthy suffered a recurrence of his recent injury problems in the 30th minute, hobbling off with an apparent hamstring complaint to be replaced by Leon Osman.

Wolfsburg continued to dominate but, after Phil Jagielka made a superb block to deny De Bruyne, they left themselves exposed from an attacking corner and Everton took advantage clinically. Mirallas touched the ball on to Lukaku, who outmuscled Naldo following a poor first touch to race clear and fire the visitors in front.

Hunt thudded a left-footed drive into Howard's arms eight minutes into the second period as Wolfsburg pressed forward but struggled to regain their earlier rhythm.

The offside flag denied them once again - justifiably this time - in the 55th minute when Bendtner nodded in from a De Bruyne corner before McGeady spurned a glorious chance to double Everton's advantage. Osman released Lukaku down the left channel and his shot was beaten into his path by Benaglio but the Republic of Ireland international overcomplicated his effort on the rebound and hit over.

Perisic carried the charge for Wolfsburg once more, cutting in from the left flank and striking the outside of the near post with Howard beaten.

Howard and Jagielka took turns to thwart Perisic and the former did well to palm away Marcel Schafer's swerving long-ranger.

The United States goalkeeper and his defensive colleagues could breathe easily once Lukaku gave another demonstration of his brute strength to feed Mirallas, who sauntered past Luis Gustavo to finish.

Substitute Maximilian Arnold struck the post in the final minute to sum up Wolfsburg's night before a linesman's flag prevented Everton replacement Ross Barkley from adding undue gloss to the scoreline.

Feyenoord 2-0 Sevilla: Reigning champions beaten and leapfrogged

    457243_heroa.jpg

Feyenoord have clinched their place in the Europa League knockout phase after beating defending champions Sevilla 2-0 at De Kuip on Thursday.

Unai Emery’s men went into the match top of Group G, though they now find their title defence in question after suffering a disappointing defeat just a few days after getting thrashed 5-1 by Barcelona.

Sevilla almost got off to a wretched start as Stephane M’Bia kicked the ball against his own hand inside the penalty area after four minutes, though the Cameroon star escaped unpunished.

But the hosts generally struggled to break down Sevilla’s resilient backline, with Daniel Carrico and Alejandro Arribas proving dependable in front of third-choice goalkeeper Sergio Rico.

Feyenoord did go close right before the break, though, as Karim El Ahmadi’s low cross was desperately cleared by a combination of Coke and M’Bia, before Clasie tested Rico from 30 yards.

The match’s pattern seemed to continue in a similar fashion at the start of the second half, but Feyenoord eventually broke through.

Jean-Paul Boetius did brilliantly to pounce on a loose ball in the area and, after skipping past a couple of challenges, he poked a pass to Jens Toornstra for an easy finish.

Sevilla appeared to have fought back immediately as M’Bia nodded in, but the midfielder’s effort was disallowed for offside, despite the Cameroonian not being among those in an illegal position.

Feyenoord finally put the game to bed as Sevilla chased a late equaliser, with El Ahmadi making the most of Rico’s poor positioning to lift an 83rd-minute half-volley into the net with seven minutes left, securing the Dutch side’s place in the last 32.

Sparta Prague 0-0 Napoli: Benitez's men qualify for last 32

    658121_heroa.jpg

Napoli sidestepped a potential Europa League banana skin at the Generali Arena against Sparta Prague in a 0-0 draw on Thursday.

The Partenopei took an important point to propel them to guaranteed progression from Group I, despite both sides missing truckload of chances in a hard-fought stalemate.

In a competitive first half of action, the hosts took the lead in threatening the opposition goal on 17 minutes, with Josef Husbauer clattering a long-range half volley off the underside of the crossbar with goalkeeper Rafael Cabral left stranded.

The rebounding ball fell to the forehead of Sparta’s top goalscorer David Lafata, but the Czech striker could only plant his header within the grasp of the goalkeeper from merely six yards out – spurning the best opportunity of the opening period.

Gonzalo Higuain received sporadic service to feet, but the close attention of Jakub Brabec ensured that the Argentine international spent the majority of his first half with his back to goal. David Lopez went closest for the Partenopei in the 26th minute with a long-range effort that sailed harmlessly wide, before the hosts bared their teeth again.

A testing cross from the right-hand side flashed into the Napoli penalty area, picking out left winger Ladislav Krejci in acres of space at the back post.

After mustering up merely a tame half volley across goal, Raul Albiol was called into action to put his head on the line and clear the danger – ensuring that the Serie A outfit made their way into the dressing room with the scores level at the interval.

After bailing out his goalkeeper well at the end of the first half, Albiol almost turned villain the other side of the break, as the Spain international flicked on a cross which his Brazilian team-mate had come to claim. Fortunately for Napoli, the looping deflection didn’t fall to Krejci, who was lurking at the back post with goalscoring intentions.

Napoli were saved by the woodwork once again with only a quarter of an hour left to play, as a Sparta corner was only half cleared by the away side.

Marek Matejovsky picked up the scraps with a long-range volley, but the Czech midfielder’s effort deflected off the outstretched boot of Marek Hamsik and looped onto the crossbar - with it seemingly not being the home side’s night in front of goal.

Moments later, it was Napoli’s turn to rue their luck, however, with both Duvan Zapata and Faouzi Ghoulam unable to make contact with a devilish cross from the right-hand side despite having Marek Stech at their complete mercy.

On 81 minutes, too, the Partenopei were unable to capitalise on a good opportunity, with Hamsik looping a back-post header onto the roof of the net from close range, in what was truly a tale of missed opportunities in the Czech capital.

Zapata was the final man to compound Napoli’s woes, with the Colombian glancing a close-range header wide of the far post in the 90th minute.

Due to a superior head-to-head record, the Partenopei are assured of a spot in the last 32, with Young Boys and Sparta Prague left to battle for the other spot.

Blow for Barcelona as Vermaelen ruled out for 4-6 months

    640451_heroa.jpg

Barcelona have announced that Thomas Vermaelen has been ruled out of action for between four and six months.

The Belgium international has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Catalan club since joining from Arsenal in August for a reported €19 million, having signed while still recovering from a hamstring problem sustained at the World Cup.
Vermaelen was declared fit to return to action at the tail end of September but his comeback was postponed for a further two months before he was finally given the all-clear to make his debut in Tuesday's Champions League clash with APOEL.

However, the versatile centre-half pulled up in training with a recurrence of his hamstring problem and it has now been announced that the 29-year-old requires an operation that could even end his season.

"Thomas Vermaelen will undergo surgery on his right semitendinosus muscle by doctor Sakari Orava next Tuesday in Finland," read a club statement released on Thursday evening. "The estimated recovery time is four to six months."Vermaelen has been plagued by muscular problems in recent seasons and had lost his place in the Arsenal starting line-up before departing for Catalunya during the summer.

Llorente: I won't cry over Spain exile

    654171_heroa.jpg

Fernando Llorente says he is not going to cry over his continued exclusion from the Spain squad, insisting his sole concern is on helping Juventus win their Champions League group decider with Atletico Madrid next month. The towering striker has not been summoned by Roja coach Vicente del Bosque for a year - despite a fine debut campaign in Serie A last season.

Llorente has found goals more difficult to come by this term but he netted the opener in Wednesday night's 2-0 win at Malmo, which has left Juve needing only a point at home to Atletico on December 9 to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League.

However, the Bianconeri would claim top spot if they were to beat Atletico by two clear goals, given they were defeated 1-0 by the Spanish champions at the Vicente Calderon on matchday two.

The game in Turin clearly represents an excellent opportunity for Llorente to impress before a Spanish television audience, which will most likely include Del Bosque, but the former Athletic Bilbao forward says his primary focus is on victory.“I’m not going to cry if I don’t get into the national team," Llorente told Sky Sport Italia.

"I don’t know if I have the confidence of the coach. I only know that I have to continue working well with my club."We have to win against Atletico and we will try to clinch first place in our group.”However, Llorente admitted that he is happy with his recent form, having netted three times in his last three outings in all competitions.

"I am working well and I think it shows on the pitch," the 29-year-old stated.
Llorente, who joined Juve on a free transfer from Athletic last year, has netted seven times in 24 previous appearances for Spain.

Xavi is like a chess player, says Giggs

    454886_heroa.jpg

Manchester United icon Ryan Giggs has voiced his admiration for Barcelona midfielder Xavi and has compared his to a chess player for his quick thinking. The ex-Spain international drew level with Giggs on 151 Champions League appearances including qualifying rounds following Barca's 4-0 win over APOEL on Tuesday and the Welshman feels honoured to share the record with Xavi.

"It is never nice to lose a record, but the fact that I'm now sharing it with someone of Xavi's calibre makes it a bit less bad," Giggs told Mundo Deportivo."Xavi is a bit like a chess player. He is always two or three steps ahead of everybody else. For me, he is one of the greatest players ever who played for one of the best teams ever.

"What surprised me most about him whenever I played against him was the way he protects the ball. He always keeps it far away from his opponents. He always seemed to make the perfect decision."He is a very intelligent player and always remains humble. He reminds me a bit of Paul Scholes."

Xavi has made the most appearances in the Champions League without qualifying rounds since the new format was introduced back in 1992. He has played 145 matches, one more than Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Messi will leave Barcelona eventually, says Deco

    649551_heroa.jpg

Former Barcelona midfielder Deco believes Lionel Messi will leave the Camp Nou side in the future.

The Argentina international recently revealed that his future could lie away from Barcelona and Deco believes it's inevitable that the 27-year-old will leave the club.
"I know Messi will leave one day. That's to be expected. Everything comes to an end," Deco told Globo Esporte.

"I understand that all sorts of speculation arises when a great player speaks, but nobody is eternal in a team, and much less so in football. Great players and great managers come and go."Obviously with Messi's history at Barca, you can understand that it's hard to see him at another club, but one day it will happen. It could be this season, in a year's time or in five years. It will depend on lots of things.

"All I think is that players like Messi need to be happy to perform at their best. That's the big secret. If Messi is happy, he'll stay. If he's not, he'll look for better options. Messi needs to be happy, to be content."

The attacker has been in sublime form in recent weeks, netting hat-tricks against Sevilla and APOEL to become all-time top scorer of La Liga and the Champions League respectively. He has a contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2018.

Wilshere ruled out for up to three months

    646011_heroa.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has undergone surgery on his left ankle and will be sidelined for up to three months.

The England international limped off during the Gunners' 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend following a late challenge from Paddy McNair on the edge of the box.

Wilshere subsequently missed Arsenal's 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, with manager Arsene Wenger revealing after the match that he expected the midfielder to miss "the next few games".

However, it has now been confirmed that Wilshere will instead be sidelined until at least February, though the Gunners revealed that his operation had been a success.
Wilshere took to Instagram to confirm the news and said that "everything went well", while urging his fans to stay positive.

"Work hard for what you want because it won't come to you without a fight," he wrote. "You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you put your mind to.

"If somebody puts you down or criticises you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive."

Brandao sentenced to a month in jail for Thiago Motta headbutt

    638311_heroa.jpg

Bastia striker Brandao has been sentenced to a month in prison for headbutting Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta - but the Brazilian might not serve any jail time.

The 34-year-old forward was on Thursday found guilty of assaulting the Italy international in the tunnel at the Parc des Princes after their respective clubs' Ligue 1 meeting in the French capital on August 16.

The president of the correctional tribunal of Paris decreed that Brandao should serve a month in prison and pay a fine of €20,000, but added that an agreement could be reached that would see the player avoid incarceration and instead undertake community service.

The incident occurred after PSG's 2-0 win over Bastia and was captured on television cameras, with Brandao shown to have waited for Thiago Motta to enter the tunnel before confronting and then headbutting the midfielder.

The prosecution had called for the former Marseille ace to be jailed for eight months and fined €15,000 because of the allegedly premeditated nature of the assault, claiming Brandao's reaction to his earlier on-field dispute with Thiago Motta had been "totally disproportionate and not instantaneous ... It was an act that was thought out, calculated ... and simply appalling".In his police statement Motta said: "During our clash on the field, he told me that he would wait for me. I had no idea that he really would."

However, Brandao's defence attorney had argued that the headbutt was "a sudden impulse" and an angry response to taunts from Thiago Motta relating to a rape allegation made against the South American in 2012, which was ultimately dropped.

Despite the fact that he may avoid imprisonment, Brandao, who was not present in court as he was undergoing surgery on a thigh problem, must still serve the six-month suspension handed out to him by Ligue 1's disciplinary commission in September, which means he will not be eligible to play again until February of next year.

    Platini's anti-Ronaldo stance baffles Arbeloa

    500211_heroa.jpg

Alvaro Arbeloa is baffled that Uefa president Michel Platini believes a Germany star should win the Ballon d'Or, and not his Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Germany stormed to World Cup success this summer and Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Toni Kroos and Mario Gotze have been nominated for the award from that victorious 23-man squad.

However, Ronaldo remains the bookmakers' favourite after a stellar 12 months in which he fired Real Madrid to La Decima and continued his goalscoring heroics into the 2014-15 season.

Ronaldo's World Cup group stage exit with Portugal may count against him if Platini's comments are echoed by voters for the Ballon d'Or award - a notion which Arbeloa cannot comprehend and he suggested anyone who thinks otherwise is clueless.

"With all due respect, I can’t understand how the president of Uefa can express a personal opinion about an issue like this, or take up a position in that way," the Real Madrid full-back, 31, told reporters at a book launch on Thursday.

"The winner of this year’s Ballon d’Or already has a name. To be honest it’s a shame for the organizers that this year, there’s not really much debate about who should win the Ballon d’Or.

"Everyone in the football world would agree that Cristiano has been the best player - by a long distance. His year has been quite simply spectacular and he has pulverised goalscoring records in the Champions League.

"I’m not saying this just because we are team mates - anyone who knows even just a little bit about the subject would agree that the winner has to be Cristiano."

The Ballon d'Or shortlist will be whittled down to three names on Monday before January 12's ceremony.

    Martinez: Everton performance was perfect

    659281_heroa.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez basked in a "perfect" display as his side beat Wolfsburg 2-0 to top Group H in the Europa League.

A 1-1 draw between Lille and Krasnodar earlier on Thursday ensured progression for the Premier League side, irrespective of the result at the Volkswagen Arena in Germany, but the Toffees built on it in style, soaking up significant spells of pressure in between Belgium international duo Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas netting on the counterattack.

"It was a perfect away performance," Martinez told reporters. "Our counterattacks were lethal and I thought we were outstanding.

"Big credit must also go to the back five because keeping a clean sheet here is a fantastic achievement."

It was a night to remember for Everton's travelling support and Martinez thanked them for their vocal backing.

"The celebrations were incredible - there were Evertonians everywhere," he enthused. "We've had phenomenal support again."

The downside of the evening for Martinez was midfielder James McCarthy suffering a recurrence of a hamstring problem.

The Republic of Ireland international will be assessed over the next 24 hours and his manager is keen to find a lasting solution.

Martinez told the club's official website: "It's been a recurring problem with James's hamstring and we need to get to the bottom of it.

"He's such a high-intensity player that his soft tissue suffers a lot. He's a sprinter and we hope he didn't hurt himself too much. We'll assess him and see how quickly we can get him fully fit."

    Galatasaray confirm Prandelli sacking

    653561_heroa.jpg

Galatasaray have decided to part company with Cesare Prandelli following the club's Champions League exit this week, according to the club's vice-president.
The former Italy boss replaced Roberto Mancini over the summer but has been unable to guide the club beyond the group stages of the competition.

Defeat to Anderlecht on Wednesday means that they will finish bottom of Group D and not get a chance to play Europa League football in the latter half of the campaign.

Although reports in Italy suggest that the ex-Fiorentina coach has not yet been told he is up for the axe, Turk Telekom Arena club chief Abdurrahim Albayrak confirmed the imminent sacking to Turkish media. He told Anadolu Agency: "We have decided we will no longer be working with Cesare Prandelli."

Domestically, Prandelli has fared a little better, with the club picking up 19 points from their opening 10 games, leaving them third in the table, one point behind joint leaders Besiktas and Fenerbahce.

However, a 3-0 defeat to Trabzonspor last weekend, followed by a poor European campaign, has proven to be the final straw, with assistant coach Claudio Taffarel reported to be set to take temporary charge.
