Roma 2-2 Sassuolo: Late Ljajic double earns 10-man Giallorossi precious point

    690462_heroa.jpg

Adem Ljajic proved the hero for Roma as he netted a late double to earn the 10-man Serie A title-chasers a dramatic 2-2 draw at home to Sassuolo on Saturday evening.

Two quick goals from Simone Zaza in the first half gave the visitors the lead, the Italy international first capitalising on a terrible mistake from goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis to open the scoring, before an emphatic finish saw him double his side's lead just minutes later.

The win seemed imminent for Sassuolo until the late stages, when a penalty in the 78th minute allowed Ljajic to halve the defecit and then an injury-time strike from the 23-year-old saved his side's blushes and secured a point to ensure they stayed within three points of Juventus, who drew 0-0 with Fiorentina on Friday.

While Roma completely dominated possession throughout the game, they failed to stretch or get the better of the Sassuolo defence for most of the clash, as the opponents were organised incredibly well and stacked with players who threw themselves in front of the ball to block the opponents' shots on goal.

It was a close escape for coach Rudi Garcia, whose attention was clearly on Wednesday's crucial Champions League tie with Manchester City.

The Giallorossi boss made six changes to the starting XI which beat Inter 4-2 in the previous game, with Alessandro Florenzi, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Daniele de Rossi, Mattia Destro and Juan Iturbe coming into the first-team, while Kevin Strootman made his first start for nine months.

After a quiet opening 15 minutes, the game was sparked into life when Zaza gave the visitors the lead.Yanga-Mbiwa passed the ball back to De Sanctis, who took his time despite Zaza closing in. As the keeper went to clear it from deep in the box, the forward slid in and blocked it, sending it straight into the net.

It took only three minutes for that lead to be doubled, with the visitors’ high line being caught out by a Simone Missiroli through ball and Zaza was able to take it on and fire past De Sanctis easily. The 23-year-old had a chance to complete his hat-trick in the 23rd minute, latching onto another pass and bursting into the box, only to be caught by the Roma defence who snuffed out the attack.

Jose Holebas, who scored in the previous week’s win over Inter, came close to halving the deficit, driving down the left side and unleashing a dangerous shot which struck the bar.Mattia Destro saw a promising attack come to an end due to his own poor first touch and the striker scuppered another opportunity when a nice cross from Florenzi found him in space in the box, but the header went wide.

While a dangerous attacking outlet for Roma, Holebas put in some incredible defending to prevent a third goal for the away side, sliding in to knock the ball out as the opposing attackers were queueing up to hit it.

The second half started terribly for the hosts, with Daniele de Rossi being dismissed after five minutes with a second yellow card. The midfielder had been booked in the first period for pulling Sansone to the ground and his second came after bringing down Domenico Berardi in the middle of the park. The visitors began to put more pressure on Garcia’s men and opened up a great chance in the 57th minute, with Zaza flicking it on to Berardi whose shot from the edge of the box was saved.

Garcia sent Radja Nainggolan and Gervinho on for Strootman and Iturbe as he looked to ensure his side created more chances, but the space between the defence and midfield was incredibly tight and the backline proved impossible to stretch.

Gervinho’s dribbling ability and close control saw him weave his way into some promising spaces and he eventually had a massive influence when he drove into the box to see a shot hit the hand of Sime Vrsaljko, with the referee pointing to the spot. It seemed a harsh decision from the referee as the defender was sliding in and had no time to avoid the ball, but Ljajic stepped up to send it straight down the middle and into the net.

The intensity from Roma increased even further as they looked to get at least a point from the clash, but Sassuolo continued to match them everywhere, making sure Gervinho was kept at a manageable whenever the lively Ivorian got on the ball.

A ball over the top into the box from substitute Seydou Keita was tracked well by central defender Paolo Cannavaro, who leapt up and lifted his leg high to clear it in a desperate move.

Shortly after, Ljajic dribbled into the box and squared it to Florenzi who looked set to pull the trigger and blast home the equaliser but Francesco Acerbi stuck a leg out to block it and Nainggolan sent it over the bar.

It was a last gasp stretch from Acerbi right at the death which epitomised the fight and determination from Sassuolo, but their heroics were not rewarded with all three points as Ljajic popped up with goal right at the death, bursting in to the back post to send a loose ball into the net.

Sassuolo will be disappointed to surrender such a big lead, but Garcia will be immensely disappointed to see his side pass up the chance to come to within one point of Juve.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Bayer Leverkusen: Ribery gives Guardiola's side a narrow win

    690392_heroa.jpg

Franck Ribery's 100th Bayern Munich goal earned the Bundesliga champions a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

The winger, who also became the Frenchman with the most German top-flight appearances, broke the deadlock early in the second half as Bayern maintained their perfect home league record this season.

Leverkusen were left to rue their failure to capitalise on a promising first-half showing, when they blunted the hosts' prolific attack and wasted two excellent early openings.Ribery's strike changed the game entirely as Bayern grew in stature after the break, threatening to double their advantage on several occasions. But one goal proved enough for Pep Guardiola's side to restore their seven-point lead at the summit.

The visitors were denied a surprise lead inside the opening three minutes when a defensive mix-up allowed Karim Bellarabi through to clip a shot over Manuel Neuer, but Juan Bernat did brilliantly to slide in and divert the ball away just before it crossed the line.Roger Schmidt's side spurned another presentable opportunity in the seventh minute as Son Heung-min's delivery flashed across the face of goal, narrowly eluding the reach of Stefan Kiessling.

Despite dominating possession, Bayern offered little threat in the final third, with Robert Lewandowski restricted to a peripheral role by a well-marshalled Leverkusen defence.Indeed, Schmidt's biggest concern in the first half was the sight of Kiessling going down injured following an innocuous challenge with Rafinha, although the Leverkusen stalwart did return after treatment.

The only other notable moment for Bayern before the interval was Arjen Robben's disallowed goal, the Dutchman half-volleying into the net after the whistle had gone for a foul on goalkeeper Bernd Leno. And yet it took just six minutes of the second half for the champions to break the deadlock as Ribery volleyed home a left-footed strike from inside the box to ease the air of frustration around the Allianz Arena.

That foreshadowed a spell of concerted Bayern pressure, with Robben's attempted cross hitting the post after clipping Leno's right leg, while Lewandowski somehow found the side-netting after his own cross had been diverted back to him in front of an unguarded net.Leverkusen showed commendable resolve to stay in the contest and managed to mount a few late attacks of their own, though Hakan Calhanoglu's wasteful free-kick summed up their lack of precision in the final third.

Bayern ultimately saw out the remainder of the game with relative comfort to seal a 10th consecutive home Bundesliga win, with tempers briefly flaring in the closing stages following Bellarabi's lunging challenge on substitute Sebastian Rode.

Manchester City 1-0 Everton: Aguero injury sours victory

    690242_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero went off injured as Manchester City defeated Everton 1-0 to close the gap on Premier League leaders Chelsea to three points.

The Argentinian has been in blistering form in recent weeks, his brace in Wednesday's 4-1 demolition of Sunderland taking his tally for the season to 19 goals in all competitions.

But the City striker lasted just seven minutes at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday before hobbling off, to be replaced by Jose Angel Pozo.

After losing their talisman, another of City's key players stood up to be counted as Yaya Toure tucked away a first-half penalty to earn the champions their fifth consecutive victory in all competitions, capitalising on Chelsea's 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United earlier in the day.

Everton, who were denied a late equaliser when Joe Hart produced a stunning save to keep out Romelu Lukaku, have taken just one point from their last three games as their inconsistent form continues.

While City will undoubtedly be thrilled with another win, the injury to Aguero will cause major concern, especially with a crucial UEFA Champions League clash at Roma to come on Wednesday.

Roberto Martinez brought in Samuel Eto'o for Ross Barkley and Tony Hibbert for Leon Osman - perhaps seeking defensive cover for Aguero - but he was barely able to have any impact before limping off the field.

After stumbling under a challenge, the striker fell awkwardly while attempting to regain his balance and, following treatment, was unable to continue.

But the hosts managed to recover their poise and were ahead through Toure's spot-kick in the 24th minute.

James Milner - recalled to the City side along with Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando from the win at Sunderland - beat Phil Jagielka to the ball near the byline and went down under the defender's challenge.

With Aguero off the field, Toure stepped up and placed the spot-kick into the bottom left-hand corner for his fourth league goal of the season.

Samir Nasri's powerful drive was headed away by Sylvain Distin in the 34th minute and Everton threatened for the first time five minutes later when Kevin Mirallas' first-time strike was deflected wide by Fernando.

Pozo should have doubled City's lead five minutes into the second half, but shot straight at the legs of Tim Howard after being picked out by Milner six yards from goal.

Milner then wasted another chance 12 minutes from time, blazing a volley over after substitutes Frank Lampard and Edin Dzeko had combined.

Hart had been relatively untroubled for much of the game, but the England international pulled off a superb one-handed save to tip Lukaku's volley around the post with eight minutes remaining.

With that stop, Everton's best chance of an equaliser came and went as City held on to secure the win and keep the pressure on Chelsea.

Real Madrid 3-0 Celta: Record breaking Ronaldo extends Blancos' winning streak

    691232_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo moved to 200 La Liga goals with a record 23rd Spanish top-flight hat-trick in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Celta.

The Portugal star celebrated his Ballon d'Or nomination in stunning style by scoring all three goals in a routine win, which also saw Real equal Barcelona's all-time Spanish record of 18 consecutive wins in all competitions from the 2005-06 season. The former Manchester United forward netted his first in dubious fashion as he converted a controversial penalty after he was deemed to have been fouled inside the area.

There was little doubt about the other two, though, as Ronaldo shrugged off several uncharacteristic misses to send Real on their way to a comfortable triumph. Ronaldo scored his second with 25 minutes to go, firing in from the edge of the area, before completing his landmark hat-trick in the dying stages.

Victory sees Real consolidate their place at the top of the table, though all of the attention will be on Ronaldo and whether Carlo Ancelotti's men can break Barca's tally when they host Ludogorets in the Champions League on Tuesday.

With the record in their sight, Real poured men forward relentlessly right from the start and somehow failed to take a lead in the first 10 minutes.Sergio Alvarez got down well to keep out a Ronaldo header after he met Toni Kroos' corner and diverted towards goal, and Sergio Ramos – making his 300th Liga appearance for Real – sliced the rebound wide from five yards out.

Ronaldo looked destined to break the deadlock three minutes later as he raced on to James Rodriguez's low cross, but Jonny Castro's last-ditch intervention was timed to perfection. And the 29-year-old's frustrations grew a few moments later, as his acrobatic scissor-kick landed on the roof of the net.

Ronaldo eventually got his goal, though, as he stroked home a 36th-minute penalty after Castro was adjudged to have tripped him just inside the area.
Real were denied a two-goal margin at the interval, as Alvarez palmed away Rodriguez's controlled 18-yard effort.

Celta looked threatening at the start of the second half, as Fabian Orellana fired agonisingly wide of the post after skipping past Dani Carvajal.Real capitalised on that let-off and doubled their advantage in the 65th minute as Ronaldo pounced on a loose bouncing ball just outside the area and fired past the helpless Alvarez.

And Ronaldo completed the scoring with nine minutes to go, tapping in Marcelo's low cross to claim, surpassing Telmo Zarra and Alfredo Di Stefano's hat-tricks haul.

:cool:Ronaldo scores 200th Liga goal with record breaking hat-trick

    690972_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 200th goal on Saturday when he scored three in Real Madrid's victory over Celta, making him the player with the most hat-tricks in the history of the Spanish league.

Having racked up 197 goals in 177 league games heading into the clash at the Santiago Bernabeu, the Portuguese attacker opened the scoring with a penalty in the first half before adding a further two in the second period to reach the milestone.

Not only did he reach a remarkable goal tally, he also broke a record with his 23rd hat-trick in the Spanish top flight.

Shortly after making history with the 200th strike, the attacker was substituted and walked off to a huge round of applause from the home crowd.

The 2013 Ballon d'Or winner is now on 23 league goals in just 13 games this campaign.

    Bojan is exceptional, says Hughes

The attacking midfielder, who arrived from Barcelona in July, scored Stoke's second goal following Peter Crouch's opener and had a hand in the third for Jonathan Walters as the hosts went into half-time with a commanding 3-0 lead at the Britannia Stadium.

And Hughes was delighted with the role his summer signing played in his side's first win in four league games.

"It was an outstanding second goal by Bojan, who once again has put in a really impressive performance," he told reporters.

"I think since he's come back into the side he has played four or five games and I think he has been our man of the match in every game he's played since he's come back. He's playing exceptionally well.

"He's showing everybody that not only is he a good player technically but, in terms of his work rate and what he tries to do for the team, he's very much a team player as well and we're reaping the benefits of that.

"He's integrated very, very well because he's a good personality as well, works hard every day to get better and works hard for the team."

Bojan found the net for a second time only for the goal to be ruled out after Mame Biram Diouf was deemed to have interfered with play from an offside position, and Hughes was angered by the decision.

"It was a really disappointing decision of the referee to chalk out an outstanding individual goal by Bojan, created by himself.

"You really should look to encourage positive play rather than look for a reason to penalise us.

"So we've gone from a situation where we could have been 4-0 up, that puts a spring in their step and very quickly we're looking at 3-2 and we're hanging on when the game should have been dead and buried.

"But we've got ourselves together and for the most part we saw it out quite comfortably."

It was never a penalty and Mangala's tackle was horrific - Martinez

Roberto Martinez has criticised referee Andre Marriner's display during Everton's 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday.

Yaya Toure's first-half penalty was enough to see of the Toffees yet Martinez was disappointed with the award of the spot-kick, as well as two other decisions he felt went against his side.

Marriner pointed to the spot after James Milner had gone down under a challenge from Phil Jagielka, a ruling that Martinez disagreed with, and he believes the decision damaged his side's confidence.

"The penalty decision shocked us and took the confidence out of our game," he told Sky Sports.

"I must admit I'm very disappointed with the assessment of the penalty.

"Phil Jagielka cannot disappear. It's not Phil Jagielka trying to get James Milner fouled, and if you look at the reaction of James he's trying to get up and fight for the ball.

"It's not a penalty in a million years. Sometimes we get carried away by giving it for any sort of contact."

Martinez also raised questions over fouls by Eliaquim Mangala, who caught Samuel Eto'o in the back with his studs, and the high foot of Fernando of Gareth Barry, feeling their yellow cards were too soft.

"I'm very, very disappointed. The first one is no doubt," he said.

"The contact is horrific, that's a violent action and that wasn't a natural position to justify that angle.

"That should have been given a red card. Fernando's is a high boot, dangerous play, but what we are feeling harshly done by is that three big calls went against us."

Ribery one of Bayern's best ever foreigners - Guardiola

Pep Guardiola described Franck Ribery as one of the greatest imports ever to represent Bayern Munich following his 100th goal for the club.

The France winger scored the game's only goal six minutes into the second half to break Bayer Leverkusen's resistance and restore the champions' seven-point cushion at the summit of the Bundesliga. As well as reaching a century of goals, Ribery also became the Frenchman with the most German top-flight appearances to his name.

And Guardiola heaped praise on the 31-year-old, who, along with fellow wideman Arjen Robben, also had to show his defensive resolve in a first half where Leverkusen looked threatening."He is one of the best foreign players to ever play for this club," the Spaniard said."Ribery and Robben are primarily attackers but did their defensive duties well."The supporters might have expected us to score two, three or four goals, but I knew that it would difficult."

The victory was Bayern's 10th in a row at home in the league and Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt added: "Congratulations to Pep and his team. They deserved to win."

Ancelotti: Ronaldo is at his peak

    690622_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has said Cristiano Ronaldo is at his physical peak, after the Real Madrid attacker scored his 200th league goal.

The club talisman scored all three goals for his side as they beat Celta 3-0 on Saturday to reach the milestone after 178 appearances, simultaneously breaking the record for most hat-tricks in the Spanish top flight with his 23rd treble.

And Ancelotti has heaped praise upon his star player, saying that having him in the team gives Madrid a huge boost

"Having him in the team is a great advantage," he told reporters. "He is doing very well at that moment, he is extraordinarily motivated and physically he is at his peak."

The Italian coach has also expressed his concern over James Rodriguez, who was substituted early in the second half, revealing that the Colombian picked up an injury.

"James has had a calf injury. We will evaluate it in the coming days. Obviously we are not happy with his injury, but we will have Isco and [Sami] Khedira back.

"These injuries, along with Modric's, are problems that come from time to time with all of these games, but we can replace them well."

We need new words to describe Ronaldo - Ramos

    691202_heroa.jpg

Sergio Ramos has hailed Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, stating that there are no words accurate enough to describe how good the record-breaking attacker is.

Ronaldo scored all three goals for his side in their 3-0 win over Celta, reaching the tally of 200 goals in La Liga and simultaneously breaking the record for most hat-tricks in the Spanish flight with his 23rd treble.

Ramos has spoken of the "privilege" that comes with playing in the same team as the 2014 Fifa Ballon d'Or nominee and believes that new adjectives are needed to describe how good he is.

"The statistics he is reaching are crazy," the defender said after his side's 18th straight victory in all competitions.

"The truth is it's a privilege that Real Madrid has a player like him.

"You have to invent words to describe him. He is breaking every record. At the moment, he is maybe in the best form of his career."

Coach Carlo Ancelotti is expected to sign a new contract with the European champions and Ramos would be delighted to see the Italian stay.

"It's great news. He is a steady coach and we hope he is here for as long as possible.

"Carlo knows how to manage the team and I hope he stays here."

Inter 1-2 Udinese: Bianconeri fightback leaves hosts in San Siro slump

    695652_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini's Inter are now five games without a Serie A win after second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Cyril Thereau cancelled out Mauro Icardi's opener to give Udinese a 2-1 victory at San Siro.

Udinese coach Andrea Stramaccioni returned to haunt his former employers as he faced off against Inter for the first time since being sacked in May 2013.

After a slow start to proceedings, Inter took the lead on the brink of half-time as Mauro Icardi marked his recall to the XI by netting his eighth goal of the season.

However, Inter failed to build on their advantage and the visitors punished them with a sumptuous volley from Fernandes.

Having coughed up the lead, Inter were the architects of their own downfall as Rodrigo Palacio's poor backpass led to Udinese's second goal, with Thereau stealing in to take full advantage.

The win moves Udinese into eighth place in the league table, in the midst of a congested fight for European spots.

The hosts remain 12th after their failure to come back from behind resulted in a third game in Serie A without a win since Roberto Mancini's return to the dugout.

Inter made most of the running in the half but their play in the attacking third lacked a clinical touch, with Palacio and Gary Medel both failing to find a team-mate when in promising positions.

Mateo Kovacic hit the crossbar as Inter edged closer to the opener, but Antonio Di Natale ought to have done better with Udinese's first clear sight of goal after Andrea Ranocchia lost possession, but the veteran striker fired over.

After wasting a handful of promising openings, Inter finally found a way through in the final minute of the first period as Fredy Guarin played a measured throughball to Icardi and the striker calmly fired under Udinese goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis.

The visitors slowly began to get into the game after the interval and Di Natale twice went close with long-range efforts.

And their momentum was rewarded on hour mark as Fernandes fired a superb volley across Handanovic to level things up.

Things went from bad to worse for Inter as they gifted Udinese the winning goal just 11 minutes later.

Palacio under-hit a backpass that allowed Thereau to steal in, round the goalkeeper and roll the ball into the net.

Udinese were made to work for their win with Guarin and Kovacic seeing efforts charged down by a resilient visiting defence.

Aston Villa 2-1 Leicester City: Foxes in big trouble after ill-tempered clash

    694852_heroa.jpg

Leicester City remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League after losing 2-1 to Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The Foxes took the lead through Leonardo Ulloa's tap-in in the 13th minute but that advantage lasted only four minutes, Ciaran Clark heading in from Ashley Westwood's free kick to restore parity.

After some great saves from both goalkeepers, though, Villa seized the lead through an unlikely source when Alan Hutton made an untracked run from right-back before keeping his composure to take a touch and fire past Brad Guzan.

To make matters worse, Leicester full-back Paul Konchesky was controversially sent off for a challenge on Hutton with 10 minutes to go.

Villa have now won back-to-back matches in the top flight and climb to 11th as a result of their first home victory since August, while Leicester have now failed to win in 10 matches.

The home side started on the front foot but it was the visitors who opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Riyad Mahrez jinked his way in from the right flank and his tame shot, which took a slight deflection off Clark, should have been held by Guzan but the goalkeeper spilled the ball into the path of Ulloa, who tapped home the rebound to end a nine-match goal drought.

The lead lasted just four minutes, though, as the unmarked Clark stooped low to head Westwood's free kick past Kasper Schmeichel for his first Villa goal since September 2012.

The hosts were dealt a blow before half-time when Westwood was carried off after a poorly timed challenge from Jamie Vardy - who received a yellow card.

Leicester also made a change at the break, with Ulloa coming off for David Nugent after failing to shake off an injury sustained in a strong challenge from Clark.

Villa created the better chances after the restart and Schmeichel did well to race off his line and force Benteke's shot to loop wide after the Belgium international held his run to latch onto Keiran Richardson's through-ball.

Nugent almost put Leicester ahead against the run of play in the 68th minute with a volley bound for the top-left corner of the net until Guzan did superbly to deny him with a fine save.

Villa deservedly moved ahead with just under 20 minutes remaining, though, when Benteke's excellent cross-field pass picked out Hutton's marauding run into the area, the right-back calmly slotting past Schmeichel at the near post.

Benteke was then twice denied by excellent point-blank stops from Schmeichel as Villa turned the screw before Leicester's task was made even more difficult when Konchesky saw red for a challenge on Hutton which resulted in the pair squaring up 11 minutes from time.

Hutton was cautioned for his reaction and Villa had to hold firm to withstand some late pressure, substitute Chris Wood coming closest with a stinging half-volley from the edge of the box that went wide as Nigel Pearson's side were beaten again.

Barcelona 5-1 Espanyol: Another Messi milestone in demolition derby

    694792_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi scored a superb hat-trick as Barcelona came from behind to rout city rivals Espanyol 5-1 on Sunday evening.

Blaugrana academy product Sergio Garcia silenced Camp Nou by opening the scoring 13 minutes in but Messi levelled matters just before half-time.

The Argentina international put Barca ahead five minutes into the second half and, after Gerard Pique had headed home a third, the four-time Ballon d'Or winner completed his hat-trick with his second right-footed finish of the game.

There was even time for Pedro to add a fifth, as Barca warmed up for Wednesday's crunch Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain in fine style.

Barca started sluggishly, as Garcia flashed a cross in from the left, and only a last-ditch Jordi Alba intervention denied Lucas Vazquez an easy finish.

But clinical visiting play saw Espanyol seize the initiative as Felipe Caicedo robbed Sergio Busquets on the right flank, and fed Garcia, who breezed past Pique before executing a low finish past Claudio Bravo.Garcia could only fire tamely at Bravo as Espanyol threatened to double their lead, but it only seemed to spur Barca on further as Messi struck the crossbar with a 30-yard free-kick, before Luis Suarez fired just wide.

And with home pressure building before the break, Messi bent an unstoppable effort into the bottom-left corner from 25 yards to restore parity on the stroke of half-time.The visitors were somewhat lucky not to be reduced to 10 men in the 49th minute as Eric Bailly barged Neymar over with the Brazilian through on goal.
But it mattered little to Barca, who edged themselves ahead a minute later.

Messi's first touch from Suarez's pass was heavy, but he reacted quickly to poke the ball through Juan Fuentes' legs and then stroke right-footed past Casilla from the edge of the area.

And their third arrived shortly after, Pique atoning for his role in Garcia's opener as he headed Ivan Rakitic's corner into the net. With the result already in little doubt, substitute Pedro latched on to Alba's exquisite cross-field pass before coolly slotting beyond Casilla in the 77th minute and Messi completed the rout four minute later.

The Argentine combined brilliantly with Pedro, playing a one-two into the area before steering into the net from 10 yards, securing his third hat-trick in four games and maintaining Barca's dominance over their near neighbours.

    :cool:Messi passes 400 Barcelona goals

Lionel Messi's equaliser in the Catalan derby against Espanyol on Sunday was the Argentine's 400th goal for Barcelona.

Luis Enrique's side fell behind to Sergio Garcia's goal, but Messi levelled with a stunning strike from outside the area which curled low into the bottom corner to bring Barca level just before the interval.

That was his 372nd official strike for the Blaugrana and his 28 in friendlies for the Catalan club meant he had reached a new milestone as he became the only player in history to register 400 strikes for a Spanish side.

The Argentine attacker then put Barca ahead with another special strike in the second half to make it 401 in a total of 486 games for the club.

With that goal, he also drew level with Cesar Rodriguez on 11 strikes against Espanyol and became the derby's all-time top scorer with his third (and 402nd for Barca including friendlies) later in the game as he dribbled through the heart of the visitors' defence, played the ball to Pedro and slotted home the return pass with a neat finish.

Gerard Pique and Pedro also scored for Barca on Sunday in the 5-1 victory at Camp Nou.
