Guingamp 1-0 PSG: Pied trips up champions' title charge

    723362_heroa.jpg

Guingamp dealt Paris Saint-Germain a blow in the Ligue 1 title race as they held on to a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Laurent Blanc's PSG had not been beaten in France's top flight since a 2-1 reverse at home to Rennes in May.

However, Jeremy Pied's close-range header in the 11th minute was enough for Jocelyn Gourvennec's men to secure an unlikely three points at the Stade du Roudourou on Sunday.

PSG, who have now suffered back-to-back losses after Tuesday's 3-1 reverse to Barcelona in the Champions League, were well off the pace, but it could have been a different story if Edinson Cavani's early lob had not hit the crossbar.

The visitors enjoyed a near monopoly of possession after the break and had claims for a penalty turned away for what they thought was a handball from Dorian Leveque before Zlatan Ibrahimovic forced Jonas Lossl into a stunning late save, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Defeat for PSG means league leaders Marseille have the chance to open up a four-point gap at the top of the table when they visit Monaco later on Sunday, while Guingamp's third Ligue 1 win in a row moves them four points clear of the relegation zone.

PSG set out their stall early and Cavani was unlucky to see his excellent lobbed volley from the edge of the area strike the woodwork in just the second minute.

However, the visitors were guilty of slack defending as Guingamp took the lead nine minutes later.

Thibault Giresse's free kick was knocked down in the area by Younousse Sankhare and Pied made a late run into the box to nod past Salvatore Sirigu.

Guingamp were doing well to quell PSG's attacking threat and they almost caught the away side out again when Claudio Beauvue - who came into the game with five goals in his last three matches - turned David Luiz in the area, but his shot went wide of the right-hand post.

Ibrahimovic did have the ball in the back of the net in the 35th minute for PSG, but the whistle had long since gone for offside.

PSG sought a quick start to the second half and Lossl showed good hands to keep out Ibrahimovic's shot from the left of the area.

Guingamp then saw a great chance to extend their lead go begging in the 48th minute when Sirigu made a superb one-handed stop to deny Beauvue, who had broken clear one-on-one.

PSG survived that scare and Ezequiel Lavezzi protested furiously for a penalty just after the hour mark when Leveque seemingly handled during a scrap for possession in the hosts' penalty area, but referee Antony Gautier was uninterested and booked Lavezzi for his arguments.

PSG were camped around the Guingamp penalty area in search of a late equaliser and the hosts had Lossl to thank for pulling off an incredible point-blank save from Ibrahimovic in the 86th minute as they held on for a famous win.

Swansea City 1-2 Tottenham: Eriksen strikes as Spurs seal another late win

    723562_heroa.jpg

Another late Christian Eriksen winner earned Tottenham a dramatic 2-1 victory at Swansea City in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Denmark international struck a last-minute goal in Spurs' 2-1 success at Hull City last month and repeated the feat at a sodden Liberty Stadium.

Eriksen picked up the ball on the edge of the area and placed an accurate finish into the bottom left-hand corner to spark scenes of jubilation among the travelling fans in south Wales.

Spurs had taken an early lead through Harry Kane's 12th goal of the season - a powerful header from Eriksen's delivery.

That setback seemed to spark Swansea into life and Wilfried Bony missed three first-half chances before eventually finding the equaliser at the start of the second period.

But it was Eriksen and Tottenham who had the final say in the last minute, as the visitors leapfrogged their opponents and went seventh, while Swansea fell to just a second home defeat of the campaign.

Kyle Walker made his first league appearance for Tottenham since March after overcoming a pelvic problem, the right-back coming in for Eric Dier from the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace last weekend.

Swansea showed two changes from their 3-1 defeat at West Ham, Gerhard Tremmel replacing the suspended Lukasz Fabianski in goal and left-back Neil Taylor coming in for Jazz Richards.

Tremmel's first meaningful action was to pick the ball out of his net in the fourth minute after Kane had got up above Angel Rangel to head in Eriksen's right-wing corner.

Hugo Lloris - making his 100th appearance for Spurs - made a smart stop low to his right to keep out Bony's well-struck effort soon afterwards as Swansea went in search of an equaliser.

Bony looked certain to find a leveller in the 21st minute after being played in by Jefferson Montero, but Ben Davies - returning to his former club - got back to make a superb last-ditch challenge and clear the danger.

Spurs were struggling to get to grips with Bony and the Ivory Coast international went close for a third time shortly before the interval.

Neat interplay between Gylfi Sigurdsson and Rangel led to the ball being cut back to the striker, whose first-time effort was deflected behind by Federico Fazio.

Three minutes after the break, Bony and Swansea finally had the equaliser their play deserved.

The forward's initial volley from Wayne Routledge's cross was blocked by Fazio, but he made no mistake with the rebound from close range.

Swansea were in the ascendancy as Ki Sung-yueng flashed a header over the crossbar on the hour and Montero saw a low drive deflected narrowly wide 18 minutes from time.

Despite being on top, the home side almost fell behind for a second time six minutes later when Kane steered a header narrowly wide of the left-hand upright.

And a late winner did arrive in the final minute as Eriksen showed unerring accuracy from the edge of the penalty area to seal all three points for Mauricio Pochettino's men.

Bruce: I don't know where Ben Arfa is

    721092_heroa.jpg

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has admitted he is unaware of Hatem Ben Arfa's whereabouts amid rumours the winger's loan will be cancelled.

Reports in Ben Arfa's native France last week suggested the Newcastle United attacker - on a season-long loan at the KC Stadium - had returned to Paris to work with a fitness coach.

Rumours have claimed Bruce will end Ben Arfa's loan deal when the transfer window reopens - with his last appearance seeing him substituted in the first half during of the 3-0 loss to Manchester United.

"I don't know if Hatem is in Paris, that's the truth," Bruce told reporters. "As for not playing for Hull City again – at the moment he's not in the squad.

"The transfer window opens in January, so there's still conversations to be had with him. But at the moment he's not in the squad and he hasn't earned the right to be in the squad."

Having also fallen foul of Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, Ben Arfa is widely expected to leave St James' Park when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Rodgers: Mignolet understands why he was benched for Manchester United clash

    459773_heroa.jpg

Brendan Rodgers believes Simon Mignolet understands the reasons why he lost his place to Brad Jones in Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United.

The goalkeeper has faced criticism over his performances for Liverpool this season and was named among the substitutes for the clash at Old Trafford, with Rodgers handing Jones his first Premier League start since March 2013.

"Simon has been fine. He is a very good professional and he understood it [the decision]," said Rodgers.

"Brad has not had not much to do apart from pick the ball out of the net, but I felt I had to make the decision."

Goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie handed United their sixth consecutive win in the Premier League, leaving Liverpool seven points behind West Ham, who currently occupy fourth place.

David de Gea also played an instrumental role in United's victory by making key saves to deny Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli, and Rodgers admits Liverpool's failure to capitalise on their chances has been the story of their season so far.

"I didn't think we deserved to be on the end of the scoreline. Obviously they were a lot more clinical than we were," said the Liverpool manager.

"It is not often you come here and create so many chances and we probably created more today than we did last season when we won 3-0.

"For the goalkeeper to get man of the match says everything the creativity we created more chances today than we did in the last five or six games.

"We had enough chances to get something from game, but it epitomised our season so far not enough goals from the team and that has clearly been an issue for us.

"The bottom line is that we have not been consistent enough over the course of of the season."

Nainggolan at the heart of everything - Garcia

    722492_heroa.jpg

Roma boss Rudi Garcia says he wants to see more dominant performances from Radja Nainggolan after his match-winning display against Genoa on Sunday.

The Belgium midfielder won an early penalty that saw the home side reduced to 10 men before his brilliant volley sealed the win to move the Giallorossi to within a point of Serie A leaders Juventus, who were held by Sampdoria this weekend.

"I expect Nainggolan to play like that all the time," Garcia told Sky Sport Italia. "He scored a goal, earned a penalty, but was also at the centre of the play, both attacking and defending.

"We made the most of the opportunity to go a point off Juve. We didn't take it last week, but learned from that experience.

"It's always tough to win at Genoa and it will be for any other side here. We had so many chances in the second half to double our advantage and relax, but 10 men can still be very dangerous on set plays.

"Genoa went very, very close to an equaliser on that late corner, even if it wasn't a corner."

Garcia also explained his decision to start Gervinho in a central role in favour of Francesco Totti.

"We knew it was possible to make the most of our striker's pace, as this Genoa defence lacks a bit of pace," he said. "They have an unusual approach, almost man-marking, so if Gervinho gets past his man then it opens up some encouraging spaces.

"All my players know they are important and will have their chance. I am trying to make the most of those who are in good form at the moment and how we can tactically cause problems for our opponents.

"At times we play at the same level as last season, at times we don't, as we have a game every three days and can lack energy. All the teams who played in Europe this season have fewer points than last term, but we are close."

Van Gaal: My wife is happy so I am happy!

    569611_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes his side still need to improve after their 3-0 victory over Liverpool - but is happy that the win has pleased his wife.

United sealed the victory with goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie, while David de Gea thwarted Raheem Sterling and substitute Mario Balotelli.

But despite acknowledging the importance of beating bitter rivals Liverpool, Van Gaal insisted there is still plenty of work to be done.

"We have to improve but we are very pleased because we know how important it is to win against Liverpool," Van Gaal told reporters. "Our cook is happy, my wife is happy so I am happy."

United are third in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Chelsea, but Van Gaal refused to discuss title talk after the game.

"I think the most important match is the next match and we have to see match by match," he said.

"Of course we are winning six matches in a row [and it] is fantastic but we have to improve our play style. I say that every week."

Genoa 0-1 Roma: Nainggolan the hero for Garcia's men

    722112_heroa.jpg

Roma recorded a vital 1-0 win over Genoa in Sunday's Serie A encounter at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Adem Ljajic missed a spot kick at the half-hour mark, but Radja Nainggolan did open the scoring shortly before the half-time whistle to help Roma to the full three points.

The visitors survived a late scare as the hosts had an injury-time equaliser ruled out for offside, meaning Rudi Garcia's men took full advantage of Juventus' draw against Sampdoria.

The guests started the match the better side of the two and came close to breaking the deadlock after 17 minutes of play when Gervinho was denied by Mattia Perin, before Miralem Pjanic blasted the rebound into a defender.

Genoa were dealt a huge blow at the half-hour mark, however, when the referee awarded Roma a penalty and sent off Perin after the goalkeeper fouled Nainggolan. Ljajic stepped up to take it, but substitute Eugenio Lamanna saved the Serbian attacker's attempt.

Garcia's men did go 1-0 up in the 40th minute. Maicon sent in a dangerous cross from the right and Nainggolan did well to find the net with an acrobatic volley.

Alessandro Matri tested Morgan De Sanctis in the dying seconds of the first half, but he failed to really trouble the Roma goalkeeper.

Pjanic tried his luck early in the second half, yet the midfielder aimed too high and the chance went begging. Gervinho then nearly doubled Roma's lead in the 72nd minute after being set up by Davide Astori, only to see his shot go just wide.

Genoa threatened shortly after via Diego Perotti after the Argentine picked up a loose ball, but the winger's shot went over the crossbar.

The guests kept on pushing for a second goal and Pjanic came close to making it two in the closing stages of the game. The midfielder received a pass from Jose Holebas before unleashing a powerful effort, but his shot went just wide.

The home side thought to have levelled the scoring well into stoppage time, but Tomas Rincon's goal was disallowed for offside.

Roma remain second in Serie A following this weekend's results, but have closed the gap with leaders Juventus to one point. Genoa, meanwhile, sit fifth in the table.

Juventus must be more clinical, says Allegri

    721502_heroa.jpg

Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri was left frustrated at his side's lack of cutting edge as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sampdoria on Sunday.

Patrice Evra put the hosts in front during an opening hour in which they dominated proceedings, only for Manolo Gabbiadini to score a fine strike on the break in the second half.

Though left irritated by what he considered to be time-wasting tactics from the visitors, Allegri concedes his side have only themselves to blame after failing to make their dominance count with additional goals.

"I think there should have been more stoppage-time, especially with substitutions and time-wasting. But we have to accept it," he told Sky Sport.

"You can't play for 90 minutes in the way we did the first 55 minutes. We created so many opportunities, didn't allow Sampdoria anything and should've made more of our chances.

"It was a shame we didn't win as we dominated the first half with so many chances. We struggled more after the break, [Gianluigi] Buffon made a great save and we were unable to seal the victory after doing all that we could.

"Samp are very dangerous on the counterattack and we conceded from that. It's a pity. The team gave gave their all and were coming off several games where we've played at a high intensity.

"We remain top of the table and that is what counts."

Roma closed to within a point of the champions at the Serie A summit following their 1-0 win over Genoa.

Carrick vital in Manchester United’s win over Liverpool, says Van Persie

    722932_heroa.jpg

Robin van Persie believes Michael Carrick's performance in central defence played a key part in Manchester United's 3-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

Louis van Gaal was forced into another defensive reshuffle following Marcos Rojo's injury during training on Friday but a back three of Carrick, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones, along with a stellar display from goalkeeper David De Gea, was able to nullify Liverpool at Old Trafford.

"I think today Carrick at the back made a big difference," Van Persie told Sky Sports.

"He's so confident on the ball. Jones played really well, all the back four or five played really well. They were really calm today."

Goals from Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Van Persie secured United's sixth consecutive victory which has given the club a three-point cushion over West Ham, who sit in fourth place.

"I think in those games it's always important to score first," said the Dutchman.

"It just gives you an extra bit of confidence, and although I think at times we were a bit sloppy, but overall we kept the ball well and played the ball well."

Mata's goal from close range doubled United's lead five minutes before the break but Van Persie admits he got a touch on the ball, which put the Spaniard in a offside position when he fired past Brad Jones.

"I got a touch, yeah, I have to be honest," Van Persie said. "I got a touch so you can put that down as an assist!"

Lewandowski: 'Winter champions' means nothing to Bayern

    721132_heroa.jpg

Robert Lewandowski hailed Bayern Munich's 13-minute, four-goal salvo in Saturday's Bundesliga win over Augsburg but insisted that being crowned 'winter champions' "means nothing".

Pep Guardiola's men initially struggled to break down their fellow Bavarians at the SGL Arena but blew the home side away once Mehdi Benatia opened the scoring just before the hour mark.

Robben doubled the visitors' advantage just seconds after play had been restarted and then netted again after Lewandowski had made it 3-0.

The latter was enthused by Bayern's second-half showing but played down the importance of a win that means the reigning Bundesliga champions cannot be overhauled at the summit of the standings before the winter break.

“We really went for it after half-time and played very well," Lewandowski is quoted as saying by his club's official website. "Four goals in one half is a good performance.

"But the 'winter championship' means nothing. We have to be first at the end of the season and there are plenty of games still to go."

Meanwhile, Lewandowski's team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger was enthused by the way in which Bayern had seen off their high-flying opponents.

"It wasn’t easy," the midfielder added. "There are good reasons why Augsburg are third.

"They’re very passionate, very aggressive and their first-half tactics were excellent.

"But after we went 1-0 up, Augsburg tried to play a more attacking game and we made good use of the gaps that opened up and went on to score our goals."

Bayern face Freiburg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night and then travel to Mainz on Friday before the Bundesliga goes into hibernation for a month.

Suarez could have become Liverpool's greatest ever - Fowler

    434367_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez could have gone on to become the greatest player in Liverpool's history if he had decided to stay at Anfield last summer, according to club legend Robbie Fowler.

Suarez joined Barcelona in a €88 million deal after firing the Reds to the brink of a first league title in 24 years with 31 Premier League goals, only for Manchester City to eventually triumph by two points.

Liverpool have struggled in the absence of their talisman this season, losing six of their first 15 league games, scoring just 19 goals and exiting the Champions League at the group stage.

And while Suarez's final record at Liverpool stands at a highly impressive 82 goals in 133 appearances, Fowler believes the Uruguayan might have eclipsed Anfield greats Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush had he stayed.

"Every time a good striker has left Liverpool, a good striker has always come in," he told Goal. "That will always be the case. If he'd have stayed for a few more years, he could probably have been the best out of everyone [in the club's history].

"Sadly, he wasn't there for long. So to class him amongst the Ian Rushes and Roger Hunts of this world is very tough. If he had been there that long, he could have surpassed everyone, he's that good a player."

Liverpool are seven points adrift of fourth-placed West Ham as they prepare to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, but Fowler remains confident they will qualify for the Champions League ahead of their bitter rivals.
"It's not all doom and gloom for me," he insisted. "We're not playing well but we're six points from fourth place and if we get three points against Manchester United, we're only three points behind them.

"There's still a lot to play for. We're in the quarter-finals of one competition.

"I'm confident Liverpool can make the top four. I don't think the manager, players and owners at Liverpool will let the team slip away again if in the worst case scenario, they don't make the top four this season."

Asked for his prediction of this season's top four, Fowler replied: "Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool."

'Neuer deserves Ballon d'Or more than Ronaldo'

    715292_heroa.jpg

Manuel Neuer deserves to win the Ballon d’Or for his outstanding displays for club and country, according to German coach Winfried Schafer.

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is many people’s favourite to win the gong after also collecting the award in 2013. But Schafer, the current Jamaica head coach, insists the Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper is the outstanding candidate.

"Manuel Neuer is my number one for the Ballon d’Or, it’s clear. He was 30 per cent of the reason why Germany won the World Cup title," Schafer told Goal."Ronaldo won nothing in the World Cup, where Portugal were not a good team.

Neuer was not just number one in the World Cup, but also in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. Only in the match against Real Madrid did he suffer."

And when asked whether Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben should have numbered among the shortlist of three, the former Stuttgart and Cameroon displayed a disliking for some of the Dutchman’s traits on the field.

"Robben was good, but I don’t like the way he dives all the time," he added."Ronaldo should be number two and Messi number three. Messi scored lots of times to win games for Argentina, he scored in three games and they got nine points."

The 2014 Ballon d’Or winner will announced at a gala ceremony in Zurich on January 12.

Busquets blames fatigue for Barcelona draw

    593971_heroa.jpg

Sergio Busquets has suggested that fatigue could have been to blame for Barcelona's toothless display in Saturday's 0-0 draw at Getafe.

The Blaugrana went into the game at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on a high after beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 at Camp Nou on Wednesday to secure top spot in Champions League Group F.

However, they played without any fluency against Getafe and the closest they came to scoring was when Lionel Messi hit the crossbar with a second-half free kick.

Sergio Busquets insisted that Luis Enrique's men had given their all in Madrid but that maybe they had paid a price for their midweek heroics against PSG.

"We tried different ways of creating danger, we gave it all we could, and we’re going away unhappy," the midfielder is quoted as saying by his club's official website. "Perhaps we were still tired after Wednesday."

The stalemate means Barcelona are four points behind Liga leaders Real Madrid with 15 rounds of the season gone.

Sergio Busquets admitted that the Catalans are in a precarious position, given Los Blancos' 20-game winning streak in all competitions, but he remains confident that they can reel in Carlo Ancelotti's side.

"Of course we’d rather be top, but there’s a lot of the league still to play," the Spain international added.

"We have to take things game by game and start cutting away at the difference bit by bit."

With Madrid currently in Morocco at the Club World Cup, Barca can close to within a point of the European champions by beating Cordoba at Camp Nou next Saturday.

Ramsey to miss Arsenal's clash with Liverpool

    474131_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Aaron Ramsey will miss Arsenal's trip to Anfield to face Liverpool next Sunday.

The Wales international scored twice in midweek as Arsenal beat Galatasaray in the Champions League but was forced off with a hamstring injury that subsequently ruled him out of Saturday's win over Newcastle.

Ramsey is now set for a spell on the sidelines along with Laurent Koscielny with Wenger unable to say when the duo will be fit to return to action.

"Ramsey will be out for a few weeks and Koscielny as well," he told reporters. "They will not be back next week."

Arsenal's injury problems saw Mathieu Debuchy deployed as a centre-back in the 4-1 win over Newcastle, but Wenger says his side were much improved from Saturday's defeat to Stoke at the Britannia Stadium.

"I’m a bit scared to say that, but at Stoke we missed the start of the game and defensively," he added.

"You look at the chances we had at Stoke and we could have scored four or five there as well and we finished the game with 10 men. Defensively we were not at the races from the start and we paid the price for that.

"The fluency going forward was not disastrous, it was our defending that was not good."

The Gunners have now scored 10 goals in their last three outings but Wenger has denied his team are the most creative in the Premier League.

"We try. I don’t think we are the most," he explained. "It’s always the same in football - you try to attack to go forward and if you win everybody says well done, when you don’t win everybody says you’re not realistic enough.

"I think our target is to combine keeping our style and defending well as well - that’s what we did today."

'The best goalkeeping performance I've seen at Old Trafford' - Solskjaer hails De Gea

    722292_heroa.jpg

Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised David de Gea's performance against Liverpool as the best he's ever seen from a home goalkeeper at Old Trafford.

The Spain international was in inspired form as he kept out the likes of Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli on numerous occasions, with United going on to win the Premier League clash 3-0 to move within five points of second-placed Manchester City.

Asked where he would rank De Gea's performance, Solskjaer told Sky Sports: "I've seen quite a few [outstanding performances] with the goalkeepers I've played with in [Peter] Schmeichel and [Edwin] Van der Sar but today was probably the best one I've seen at Old Trafford from a United goalkeeper.

"He saves them. There's six clear-cut chances that should have been goals. He stands up, David Seaman was the same. He makes it very difficult to score against him."

Jamie Carragher added: "We talk now about who the best goalkeeper in the world is. Maybe Manuel Neuer, I think we'd all agree on that with [Thibaut] Courtois very close. I bet if you asked those two goalkeepers, they've never probably put in a performance like that.

"That's one of the best goalkeeping performances I've seen. He was brilliant, he was always in control and never panicked. He was the difference."

Poli: AC Milan want third place

Andrea Poli has voiced his delight with AC Milan's 2-0 win over Napoli on Sunday and says that they have now set their sights on third place in the Serie A table.

Jeremy Menez gifted the Rossoneri the lead after just six minutes of play at San Siro before Giacomo Bonaventura made it two shortly after the interval to help Filippo Inzaghi's men to a vital victory in the battle for the Champions League places.

"It was a positive response [to last week's loss at Genoa]; we wanted the win. We deserved it and out on the pitch you could sense that we were in control," Poli told the official Milan website.

"Let’s continue like this. We want third place. We all did well. It was a team victory. Let’s enjoy this now and then we will get back to work."

The San Siro side meet Roma on Saturday and Poli has acknowledged that a tough task awaits against last year's runners-up.

"A battle is now waiting for us in Rome, but we want to move forwards like this," the summer signing from Atalanta added.

"We will be taking on a great side, but we will try and impose our game as always."

Milan currently sit sixth in the table but are just three points behind Sampdoria, Genoa and Lazio, who share third place.

AC Milan 2-0 Napoli: Rossoneri back in hunt for European return

    724332_heroa.jpg

A spirited Milan held firm to end Napoli's 11-match unbeaten run in Serie A with a 2-0 win at San Siro and boost their hopes of a European return.

Filippo Inzaghi's side were forced to withstand considerable pressure for long periods of Sunday's game, with Napoli looking threatening going forward, but goals from Jeremy Menez and Giacomo Bonaventura proved decisive.

The contest was just six minutes in when French forward Menez strode into the Napoli area and coolly slotted into the bottom-right corner, giving Milan an early advantage.

Rafael Benitez's Napoli steadily improved, however, and forced Milan goalkeeper Diego Lopez into a number of crucial stops, most notably from compatriots David Lopez and Jose Callejon.

But Milan ultimately made Napoli pay for their wastefulness in front of goal as Bonaventura, integral for the opening goal, guided a glancing header past Rafael at the start of the second period.

The visitors cranked up the pressure during the final 15 minutes, but were unable to make the most of their superiority and Milan held on to claim victory to draw level with Napoli on 24 points.

With flu keeping the under-fire Fernando Torres out, Inzaghi opted to start without a recognised centre-forward and that decision had the look of a masterstroke early on.

After just six minutes, Menez – starting in the central role – took Bonaventura's pass in his stride before bursting past Kalidou Koulibaly and stroking beyond Rafael for the opener.

Napoli did eventually grow into the contest, though, and Diego Lopez was forced into two saves in quick succession in the 22nd minute, first parrying away David Lopez's fierce effort before blocking Callejon's follow-up attempt.

The visitors piled the pressure on again just a few moments later, Callejon drawing a third save from his former Real Madrid team-mate after finding space in the right side of the area.Andrea Poli almost doubled Milan's lead with a curling effort in the 34th minute, but Napoli continued to dictate proceedings.

And Benitez's men went agonisingly close to restoring parity three minutes before the break, as Milan defender Philippe Mexes poked Gonzalo Higuain's low cross just wide of his own goal.Milan appeared to tighten up in midfield at the start of the second half and soon doubled their lead in the 52nd minute, Bonaventura nodding in a cross from former Napoli full-back Pablo Armero.

With the hosts two goals up, Napoli started to look extremely susceptible on the counterattack and almost found themselves 3-0 down in the 60th minute, but Riccardo Montolivo steered wide after Keisuke Honda led a breakaway.

Menez then went close again just a couple of minutes later, seeing his driven effort deflected over by Koulibaly after a darting run through the Napoli midfield.

Napoli threw men forward in the latter stages and saw two presentable chances spurned by Higuain, but Milan kept Benitez's men at bay to secure victory and move to within two points of the UEFA Champions League places.
