Burnley 0-1 Liverpool: Sterling gets Rodgers’ Reds back to winning ways

    761572_heroa.jpg

Raheem Sterling netted the winner as Liverpool claimed a hard-fought 1-0 Premier League victory at Burnley on Boxing Day.

The England forward scored twice in the League Cup quarter-final victory over Bournemouth last week, and he was on target again as the visitors ended a three-match winless sequence in the top flight.

Burnley dominated the first half at Turf Moor and struck the post through Danny Ings, but they were unable to make their superiority count as Liverpool reached the interval unscathed.

Sterling's crucial strike came shortly after the hour mark as he coolly rounded Tom Heaton and slotted home, despite the best efforts of two defenders attempting to scramble back.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who had been dropped "indefinitely" by manager Brendan Rodgers ahead of the clash with Manchester United a fortnight ago, was called into the fray early in the first half after his understudy Brad Jones suffered an injury.

Mignolet continued to look nervy, but was able to keep the home side at bay as Burnley's four-match unbeaten run at home came to an end.

Neither side made any changes from their previous outings, but Sam Vokes returned to the Burnley bench for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury in March.

The opening stages were most notable for a round of applause for former Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle, who was admitted to hospital earlier this week after a serious road accident.

Ings went close with the first meaningful shot of the game in the 15th minute, striking the base of the post from 20 yards with Jones beaten before Ashley Barnes blazed the rebound over.

Having seemingly picked up an injury, Jones then departed the action and was replaced by the shaky Mignolet.

The home side continued to look the more threatening, with Barnes heading Dean Marney's cross off target in the 22nd minute.

Adam Lallana had Liverpool's first clear opening on the half-hour mark, but, after receiving a wonderful first-time ball from Steven Gerrard, he shot straight at Heaton.

That was a rare attack for the visitors, who were grateful to Lucas Leiva for diverting Scott Arfield's strike round the post, before George Boyd fizzed a shot narrowly over the crossbar.

Burnley failed to recreate their high-tempo play after the restart, and fell behind to Sterling's well-taken goal.

The 20-year-old raced onto Philippe Coutinho's hooked ball and skipped past Heaton before finding the net.

Coutinho then tested Heaton with a shot of his own before, in a bid to find an equaliser, Sean Dyche sent on Vokes for Barnes with 10 minutes to go.

A leveller was not forthcoming, however, as Liverpool saw out victory to climb a place to ninth in the table.

Sunderland 1-3 Hull City: Triumphant return for Bruce

    761482_heroa.jpg

Hull City climbed out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 win at Sunderland, their first success in 11 Premier League games.

Steve Bruce's men travelled to his former club looking for their first win since October, having scored just twice in their last nine outings.

The misery looked set to continue when Adam Johnson, who scored a last-gasp winner as Sunderland beat Newcastle United last time out, capitalised on a defensive error to give the hosts the lead after just 29 seconds.

However, Gaston Ramirez equalised in the 32nd minute with his maiden goal for Hull - the Yorkshire club's first in the league since December 3 - and James Chester headed home shortly after half-time.

Substitute Nikica Jelavic then added a third in stoppage time to wrap up a valuable win and lift Hull up to 17th.The triumph - Hull's fourth in a row against Sunderland - also eases the pressure on Northumberland-born Bruce, who occupied the Stadium of Light hotseat between 2009 and 2011.

Current Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet, without the injured Anthony Reveillere and suspended Connor Wickham, handed rare starts to Billy Jones and Ricky Alvarez but both failed to make a major impact.

Bruce made several changes to the starting lineup, with Stephen Quinn, Liam Rosenior and Sone Aluko coming in while the Hull manager was boosted by captain Curtis Davies passing a late fitness test.

Within a minute, however, Davies' head was in his hands. The centre-back's under-hit backpass allowed Johnson to race into the Hull box and clip the ball home.

John O'Shea headed a 10th-minute corner narrowly over, before Jordi Gomez and Johnson combined delightfully to present Sebastian Larsson with a glaring opportunity, only for the latter to scuff the ball wide.Hull found their rhythm thereafter, with Ramirez producing some nice touches, and they got their reward just past the half-hour.

There appeared little danger when Ramirez received possession 25 yards out wiith his back to goal but the Uruguayan effortlessly span away from O’Shea and his low shot from the edge of the box, aided by an awkward bounce, evaded the outstretched arm of Costel Pantilimon and into the bottom corner.

The remainder of the half was all Sunderland. Alex Bruce appeared to handle the ball inside the Hull box, but the hosts' vociferous appeals for a penalty were rejected, while Davies hacked the ball off his own line and McGregor denied Alvarez and Santiago Vergini.

Hull went ahead six minutes after the restart, with Chester slipping his marker and heading home Ramirez’s corner at the near post.

Thereafter, the visitors began to control the game, with Steven Fletcher heading Davies' header off his own line.Sunderland began to push forward as the game wore on, but were limited to hopeful crosses into their opponents' penalty area as Hull defended resolutely.

And with virtually the last kick of the game, with Sunderland committing men forward, Jelavic was left in space on the counter-attack and stuck the ball neatly into the bottom corner.

Everton 0-1 Stoke City: Lacklustre Toffees slip to defeat

    761532_heroa.jpg

Bojan Krkic's first-half penalty was enough to seal a 1-0 triumph for Stoke City over Everton in a full-blooded Premier League clash at Goodison Park.

The former Barcelona forward gave Mark Hughes' side the lead 38 minutes into a stop-start first half with a calmly taken penalty, though Everton missed a host of gilt-edged opportunities to level before the break.

Stoke, who were lucky not to have boyhood Evertonian Jonathan Walters sent off in the first half, were content to play on the counter in the second period, with Roberto Martinez's side ultimately proving toothless in attack.

Everton were unbeaten in five Premier League home games prior to this rain-swept clash, but despite a fast-paced start they were sluggish in possession throughout.
Stoke shot-stopper Asmir Begovic did well to save a number of efforts during a subdued second half, with Leighton Baines the only Everton player able to make any headway on the Bosnian's goal.

Everton started brightly in a frenetic opening period and they could have been awarded a penalty inside the first minute when Kevin Mirallas was bundled over by Bojan, but referee Lee Mason waved away the appeals.

Both teams struggled to find their rhythm from there, with Ryan Shawcross and John Stones receiving lengthy spells of treatment for bangs to the head and ankle respectively, although Stoke could have taken the lead had Mame Biram Diouf's effort not been blocked by Phil Jagielka.Everton burst into life at the other end just after the half-hour mark, when Mirallas' corner landed at the feet of Gareth Barry at the back post, only for the midfielder to somehow shank his effort wide when it seemed easier to score.

The home fans were appealing for a red card 10 minutes prior to the interval when Walters tugged down Baines as the England full-back bore down on goal, but Mason was lenient and chose to only book the Republic of Ireland striker.

The controversy from that decision continued when, from the resulting free-kick, Stoke countered through Bojan, who burst into the box before being pulled back by James McCarthy – Mason this time pointing to the penalty spot.

Bojan, who seemed to have gone down softly, took the penalty himself and slotted the ball calmly into the bottom-left corner, only just evading Tim Howard's despairing grasp.

Thanks to the earlier injuries, there was 10 minutes of first-half stoppage time, during which Steven Naismith almost brought Everton level with a header that Steven N'Zonzi hacked off the line.

The drama did not stop there either, as, with just a minute of the additional period remaining, Mirallas fired into the side-netting despite having plenty of time and space to hit the target from 10 yards.

Martinez had never lost to Stoke in his managerial career, but maintaining that record was made more difficult when he was forced into two changes at the start of the second period, with injured duo Jagielka and Howard having to be replaced by Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles.

Despite plenty of possession within the opening 15 minutes of the second half, Everton were unable to trouble Begovic, with Mirallas, Naismith and Ross Barkley largely anonymous.

They finally did manage to carve out an opportunity through Baines in the 64th minute, as the full-back cut inside before drilling in a low right-footed effort that Begovic did well to parry away down low to his right.

Samuel Eto'o was brought on soon afterwards as Martinez attempted to add craft and impetus to Everton's forward line, but Stoke's high pressing game continued to thwart them as the visitors saw out the win.

Arsenal 2-1 QPR: Gunners cling on for win after Giroud red card

    761832_heroa.jpg

A superb display from Alexis Sanchez helped Arsenal to a 2-1 Premier League triumph over QPR, despite Olivier Giroud's needless red card.

Alexis scored a first-half opener and, after Giroud had been sent-off following a moment of madness, then set up Tomas Rosicky for a second as Arsenal took the points at the Emirates Stadium.

The game went to script in the early exchanges, as the hosts completely dominated possession amid some dogged defending from struggling QPR.

The opening goal came eight minutes before half-time when Alexis, who had missed an early penalty, headed home.

Arsenal were hampered after the restart by Giroud's ill-disciplined sending off after 53 minutes - the striker shown a straight red card for pushing his head into the face of Nedum Onuoha.

However, Rosicky - making his first Premier League start of the campaign as one of two changes for Arsenal - grabbed a second goal, only for Charlie Austin to give the visitors late hope when hammering home from the penalty spot.

A leveller was not forthcoming, though, as Rangers' unhappy run of not picking up a single point on the road this term continued.

It appeared they would be chasing the game as early as the eighth minute when former Arsenal man Armand Traore clumsily brought down Alexis in the area.

However, the Chilean's penalty was as poor as the challenge that earned it, his weak effort easily saved by Rob Green.

Arsenal continued to enjoy the better of proceedings as QPR, going back to the 3-5-2 formation unsuccessfully deployed earlier in the campaign, struggled to gain a foothold - although a back three featuring Rio Ferdinand, selected as one of five changes to Redknapp's XI, initially held firm.

Arsenal were restricted to speculative efforts from distance, most notably from Giroud and Alexis.

Even when the QPR defence was breached, Green was there to make the save, epitomised by a fine stop that kept out Giroud's 20-yard free-kick.

The opener finally did arrive in the 37th minute following a stunning Arsenal move. Danny Welbeck and Santi Cazorla combined before the latter laid a pass into Kieran Gibbs, whose superb cross allowed Alexis to send a diving header into the net.

To their credit, QPR responded solidly, with Steven Caulker directing a header just wide before the break.

And their hopes were given a significant boost in the 54th minute when Giroud's loss of temper left Arsenal with 10 men.

The hosts made light of their one-man disadvantage, though, as they initially kept the ball impressively.

They were aided, too, by the brilliance of Alexis as he created the second goal. Having picked up the ball inside his own area, the Chile international charged at the defence before laying the ball into Rosicky, whose deflected effort eluded Green.

Hopes of a comfortable evening from that point did not materialise, as Austin notched his 12th league goal of the season after Mathieu Debuchy was harshly adjudged to have fouled Junior Hoilett.

Mauricio Isla went closest to equalising when his header from Niko Kranjcar's corner was cleared off the line, while substitute Bobby Zamora almost connected with a ball that flashed across the box, but Arsenal held on.

:(Van Gaal in the dark over Di Maria injury

    664721_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is unsure over the diagnosis and extent of Angel Di Maria's latest injury, which ruled him out of Fridays' 3-1 win against Newcastle.

Di Maria picked up a hamstring injury at the end of November and only returned to the first team on Saturday when he was introduced as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

But he picked up another problem in training on Christmas Eve, although Van Gaal is not sure exactly what the problem is or how long the Argentine will be out of action.

"He was injured in the last training session, he stepped out of the warm-up," he told reporters. "It was a little bit amazing because he did everything very well. He stepped out and now we have to wait and see the analysis."

Asked if it was a recurrence of his hamstring injury, Van Gaal said: "I don't think so, I am not a doctor. Before we have a misunderstanding, we have to wait."

And when was asked if it was a muscle problem, he replied: "No, it's not the muscle injury. It's more that the pelvis is not in a right relationship with his leg.

"It's more for the doctor to explain than me."

The Dutchman is also unhappy at having to face Tottenham on Sunday, less than 48 hours after facing Newcastle on Boxing Day.

"I cannot prepare my team like I have to prepare," he added. "We have unit meetings, we have team meetings, we have training session, always 11 against 11 and we simulate the opponent but we cannot do that now.

"We have to play within 48 hours. For Uefa and Fifa, it is forbidden to play within 48 hours. But OK, it's England, so, different.

"All the players have to go to the AON Training Complex to recover and to eat properly. Then your body can recover better. Tomorrow morning they have again free so they can recover more. Recovery is much more important than a training session now."

Van Gaal hands out presents to lucky Manchester United fans

    761752_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal got into the Christmas spirit ahead of his side's 3-1 win over Newcastle on Boxing Day, as he was handing out presents to Red Devils fans.

The former Netherlands coach has been critical of the Premier League's busy festive period in recent weeks, but appeared to be in a more cheerful mood as he gave wrapped gifts to supporters seated around the dugout area on Friday.

The notoriously no-nonsense Van Gaal was also in a generous mood when he handed wine out to journalists during his pre-match press conference earlier this week.

His good mood will no doubt have been improved as his team maintained their fine unbeaten run against the Magpies at Old Trafford.

A vintage showing from Wayne Rooney inspired the 20-time English chamipions to a 3-1 victory, with the England captain netting twice before Robin van Persie made the points safe.

Pellegrini: Title race not just Man City and Chelsea

Manuel Pellegrini has refused to be drawn into talk of a two horse title race between his Manchester City side and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, insisting that there are other clubs capable of winning the league. The champions made light work of brushing struggling West Brom to one side with a near-perfect first half performance after Chelsea had already beaten West Ham 2-0 in the early kick off, ensuring City stay three points behind the leaders.

Goals from Fernando, Yaya Toure and David Silva wrapped up the points before Brown Ideye’s late consolation but Pellegrini us careful about not getting carried away.

He said: "We are not thinking about Chelsea. The title is never finished in December. We are not thinking about any other team as I am sure that the race for the title is not just between two teams.

"United continue winning. Other teams that can reach 86 points could win the title. This is an important month and a key week. We have to play for nine points in just one week but this is not the week that will decide the Premier League. It is important to be at the top of the table as soon as we can."

The Citizens have now won their last nine games in all competitions and a victory over Burnley in two days’ time would set a new club record for successive wins. Pellegrini, however, has little interest in records.

He added: "We are not worried about records. We are worried about trying to continue to add points because it will be a very close fight for the title."Meanwhile, West Brom boss Alan Irvine admitted that he cannot be confident of keeping his job with results in desperate need of improving.

The Baggies find themselves two points above the drop zone with only four home league wins in 2014 and the Scot accepts that he finds himself under pressure."The chairman will make a decision and I can’t control it. Can I be confident about it? No. I don’t know what the thinking is. All I can do is work as hard as I do.

"I try to leave nothing to chance. Unfortunately, I can’t do anything about individual errors. All we can do is keep on working."

    Giroud red-carded against QPR

    761962_heroa.jpg

Olivier Giroud has been red-carded in Arsenal's Premier League clash with Queen's Park Rangers for appearing to headbutt Nedum Onuoha.

The France international reacted to being pushed in the back by the former Manchester City defender as he looked to charge down a Robert Green clearance.

And referee Martin Atkinson wasted little time in brandishing the red card, with Giroud jogging down the tunnel following his misdemeanour.

The forward will now be banned for three matches, meaning he will miss the Gunners' upcoming Premier League fixtures against West Ham and Southampton as well as the FA Cup third round tie against Hull City.

Arsene Wenger's side were forced to play the final 30 minutes with a numerical disadvantage following Alexis Sanchez's opening goal before the half-time break.

Pellegrini: Kompany set for City return

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany could return for Sunday's Premier League clash with Burnley, according to manager Manuel Pellegrini.

The Belgian has been out of action since City's 1-0 win over Leicester earlier this month with a hamstring problem, joining the likes of Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic on the treatment table. However, following Friday's 3-1 win over West Brom at The Hawthorns, Pellegrini revealed Kompany could be in line to feature against Burnley.

"Vincent Kompany maybe could be fit, we will see [on Saturday]," he told reporters."Edin Dzeko and Aguero will not be fit. Jovetic was on the bench today so maybe he will be fit for Sunday."

Asked for his views on City's routine victory in the West Midlands, Pellegrini expressed his satisfaction at keeping pace with Premier League leaders Chelsea despite the cold conditions.

A first-half collapse from the hosts allowed City a 3-0 lead at the interval, with Brown Ideye's late goal proving only a consolation for Alan Irvine's men."I am very satisfied because we have three points more and because it was a difficult game," the Chilean explained.

"It's always difficult to play West Brom at home because they defend very well but also because we scored three goals even without strikers. In the way we are playing we are doing very well.

"Scoring three goals without strikers is not easy. We are not thinking about Chelsea, we are just thinking about winning our games."The title never finishes in December so we are not thinking about any other team."

Pochettino: Spurs lost control at Leicester

Mauricio Pochettino was a relieved man after Tottenham held off Leicester City despite "losing control" in their 2-1 win in the Premier League on Friday.

Harry Kane gave Tottenham a superb start with the opening goal in the second minute at the King Power Stadium but they failed to take control of the game and allowed Leicester back in.

Although Spurs remained ahead at the break, Leonardo Ulloa quickly levelled things up in the second half and the hosts looked more likely to score again.

They failed to do so, though, and a piece of quick-thinking from Christian Eriksen caught Ben Hamer out as the Denmark international fired home a long-range free-kick after 70 minutes.Pochettino admitted Tottenham had ridden their luck at times in the match, so was delighted to have come away with all three points.

"I'm happy for the result," he told Sky Sports. "We started very well, scored early and had many chances to score.

"After 20 minutes we lost control of the game. It was an open game and Leicester played very well. Never in the Premier League is it easy. Leicester played very well. You can never relax in the Premier League.""The level of our league is high and Leicester deserved more, because it didn't reflect their performance on the day."

The win moves Tottenham to within two points of fourth place ahead of their home clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

Wenger: Giroud gave Arsenal a mountain to climb

Arsene Wenger believes Olivier Giroud left Arsenal with “a mountain to climb” after the striker was sent off during the club’s 2-1 win over QPR on Boxing Day.

The Gunners took a first-half lead through Alexis Sanchez but were reduced to 10 men in the 53rd minute after Giroud was dismissed for headbutting QPR defender Nedum Onuoha.

Tomas Rosicky's first goal of the season doubled Arsenal's lead but QPR set up a tense finish at the Emirates Stadium.

Charlie Austin scored a penalty with 11 minutes remaining and Wenger acknowledged that Giroud's red card quickly made life difficult for his side.

“The red card was deserved. Giroud didn’t control himself. That’s of course a straight red,” Wenger told BT Sport.

“Of course it completely changed the dynamic. We were completely in control of the game. Not in trouble then suddenly we were down to ten men. From quite comfortable suddenly it became a mountain to climb.

“Olivier is a guy who, when he makes a mistake, he stands up for it. He knows he made a big mistake today.”

'Ronaldo will retire at Real Madrid'

    452574_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo's agent has claimed that the two-time Ballon d'Or-winning forward will finish his playing career at Real Madrid.

The Portuguese was consistently linked with a return to Manchester United last year before putting pen to paper on a new deal which runs until June 2018, when he would have spent nine years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo, who will be 33 years old in the summer of 2018, claimed last month that he would like to stay with the current European champions for longer than his existing deal if they will have him.

And his agent Jorge Mendes is convinced that the Portugal international, 29, will be a Real Madrid player until the day he hangs up his boots and suggested the club should consider retiring his No.7 shirt upon his departure.

"I got to know him when he was 15 years old, from then until now we've spoken together on most days," he told Globo Esporte. "When I’m in Madrid we always meet up. Our relationship is more like a friendship.

"I believe that Cristiano will finish his career at Real Madrid. He’s happy at the club and is still keen to achieve more success in Madrid.

"Will the club retire his shirt number when he finishes at Madrid? With every respect to the likes of Raul and Di Stefano, no player can compare to Cristiano Ronaldo.

"He's the best player in history and I'd suggest the best sportsperson of all-time - we'll never see the likes of Cristiano again. It will be completely impossible."

When asked if overtaking Barcelona forward Lionel Messi's tally of four Ballons d'Or, Mendes responded: "If he stays fit, I'm sure he'll remain the best for some time."

Neymar mused over Christmas that he might never reach the level of Messi and Ronaldo, but Mendes thinks he's destined to be among football's greatest soon - even if he lamented it would not be while playing in the same team as his star Portuguese client.

"He’s not quite Cristiano, but he is fantastically talented," the agent continued. "I’m confident that he’ll be amongst the best in the world in a few years. He has been unlucky that he has not ended up playing alongside Cristiano."

Redknapp frustrated after QPR denied penalty in Arsenal defeat

Harry Redknapp believes QPR should have been awarded a late penalty in their 2-1 loss to Arsenal on Friday.

Alexis Sanchez had given Arsenal a first-half lead at the Emirates Stadium but Arsene Wenger’s men were reduced to 10 men in the 53rd minute after Olivier Giroud was dismissed for headbutting Nedum Onuoha.

Tomas Rosicky doubled Arsenal’s lead but Charlie Austin scored a penalty with 11 minutes remaining to set up a tense finish, and referee Martin Atkinson waved away QPR protests after Kieran Gibbs’ challenge on Bobby Zamora inside the area.

"Bobby could not believe he didn't get the decision. It was a penalty for sure,” Redknapp told reporters.

"The referee had already given two penalties and I don't know why he never gave that one."

Redknapp was also frustrated by QPR’s failure to fully capitalise on Giroud’s dismissal with over 35 minutes of the match remaining.

"When they [Arsenal] went down to 10 men there was a great opportunity for us,” said the QPR manager. "To go two down was a massive blow."

QPR are two points above the Premier League's relegation zone ahead of Sunday's clash with 18th-placed Crystal Palace at Loftus Road.

Man Utd are still doing 'very bad things' - Van Gaal

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal concedes that his side are still doing "very bad things" despite beating Newcastle United.

United remain 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea following a 3-1 win over Alan Pardew's men at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, with Van Gaal's side ultimately easing to victory.

Wayne Rooney, playing from a midfield role, scored twice for the hosts, with Robin van Persie netting the other as United recorded their seventh win from their last eight Premier League games.

Substitute Papiss Cisse converted a late penalty after Phil Jones had tripped Jack Colback and, although that proved to be nothing more than a consolation for Newcastle, Van Gaal feels that his men are still doing a lot wrong.

He told BT Sport: "We make progress in every game but we are also doing very bad things in every game.

"We have to improve that but I am satisfied because we are dominating most of our game - not always winning but that is coming."

Despite the 10-point gap behind leaders Chelsea, captain Rooney is by no means willing to write off United in the Premier League title race, believing that their chances rest upon recording positive results in the next few matches.

"There is a long way to go, we know that," he said. "We have chased leads down before and we have lost leads of a big number of points.

"Anything can happen, especially over the next week or two when there is a lot of games, and if we can come out of these games with the right results then we'll be in a good position."

Messi better than everyone, including Ronaldo - Pedro

Lionel Messi is better than any other player in the world and deserves to Ballon d'Or over Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Barcelona team-mate Pedro.

The Argentine won the world's best player accolade - now awarded by Fifa - for four straight years until Ronaldo ended his Ballon d'Or rule by taking home the trophy for the second time for his efforts in 2013 last January.

After helping to fire Carlo Ancelotti's men to the Decima earlier this year with a Champions League triumph, as well as Copa del Rey success, Ronaldo is the bookmaker's favourite in the lead up to January 12's ceremony.

Messi's best achievement was skippering Argentina to the World Cup final this summer, while Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer - who triumphed with Germany in the tournament - is the third footballer chasing the award.

Despite not being at the forefront in winning silverware in 2014, Pedro believes that nobody on the planet can hold a candle to Messi when it comes to on-the-pitch quality - not even his Real Madrid rival Ronaldo.

"Ronaldo has accumulated good statistics in the past year," the Spain international told reporters after a charity match on Friday. "But Leo Messi is superior to everyone. He must win the Ballon d'Or"

Barcelona are into the last 16 of the Champions League and Copa del Rey, and are placed one point adrift of La Liga leaders Real Madrid (who have a game in hand) as of the current winter break.

"Barca are alive in all competitions," Pedro mused. "We want to see what we can achieve in the next six months."
