Real Madrid 2-2 Atletico Madrid (2-4 on agg.): Torres the hero as Simeone's men go through

    819032_heroa.jpg

Fernando Torres was the hero for Atletico Madrid as his two goals ensured a 2-2 against Real Madrid on Thursday and a 4-2 aggregate Copa del Rey win overall.

In the fifth Madrid derby of the season the visitors stretched their unbeaten run against their bitter rivals, against whom they last lost in the 2014 Champions League final.

Diego Simeone's side had won three of the four previous clashes against Real this season - including their 2-0 first-leg success at Vicente Calderon last week.

That put the onus on Madrid to attack in Thursday's return fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu and they were hit twice on the counter by Torres, who scored his first Atletico goals since returning on loan from AC Milan last month.

The 30-year-old forward, who started his career at Atletico, put the visitors in front after just 50 seconds, setting Carlo Ancelotti's side an even bigger task.

Simeone said before the match he expected a Real onslaught and it duly followed, as the European champions produced wave after wave of first-half attacks.

They had only Sergio Ramos' header to show for it, though, and Torres' second - scored inside the first minute of the second half - virtually killed off the tie.

There was still time for newly crowned Fifa Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo to net a header, but ultimately it counted for little as Atletico - last season's Liga champions - retained the bragging rights in the Spanish capital.

Torres replaced the ill Mario Mandzukic while the likes of Gabi and Arda Turan dropped to the bench for Atletico.

And the ex-Liverpool and Chelsea striker fired the visitors in front in the first minute after Antoine Griezmann stormed past Pepe and down the left.

Griezmann's cross was inch-perfect and a free Torres turned back the clock with an excellent finish, curling past Keylor Navas with aplomb.

The goal stunned Real into action and, predictably, they dominated thereafter, but the sheer weight of numbers in Atletico's defence made life tough for Ancelotti's men.

Pepe and Gareth Bale failed to convert headers but Ramos had no such problems in the 20th minute, although he was undoubtedly helped by Jan Oblak's poor decision to come for Toni Kroos' free kick.

That allowed Ramos a sight on goal and he rose highest to nod in the set-piece, bringing the home crowd to life.

Ronaldo should have cut the aggregate margin to one in the 24th minute after Oblak again came off his line and failed to collect, but Diego Godin produced a crucial block and, as the half went on, Real were reduced to a series of unsuccessful crosses in a bid to break Atletico's stubborn resolve.

The hosts were then hit with the ultimate sucker-punch as Ramos' poor ball out of defence paved the way for Torres' second.

Ramos could only find Griezmann with his attempted pass and, just as with the first goal, the Frenchman stormed forward and caused problems with his trademark pace.

He then fed Torres, who took a touch to create space, before the striker fired in - via the trailing leg of Navas.

Griezmann shot just wide in the aftermath but Ronaldo levelled on the night in the 54th minute, powerfully heading in a Bale cross.

Turan replaced Torres as the away side looked to make life even tougher for Real, who were frustrated when Karim Benzema volleyed over from a corner.

Pepe was forced off with a chest injury but Ancelotti turned down the chance to bring on an attacking player in his place as the match petered out.

And although Bale had a half-chance late on, the night belonged to Torres and Atletico, who are likely to face Barcelona in the last eight.

Juventus 6-1 Hellas Verona: Coman stunner caps Coppa thrashing

    819402_heroa.jpg

A stunning strike from Kingsley Coman capped a brilliant Juventus showing as they routed Hellas Verona 6-1 in the Coppa Italia on Thursday.

After coming through a stern test in a 3-1 Serie A win at Napoli last Sunday, Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri opted to rest a number of his star players.

Arturo Vidal, Andrea Pirlo and Carlos Tevez were all left out of the squad, but their absence made little difference in a scintillating Juve display in Turin to set up a quarter-final clash with Parma.

Sebastian Giovinco opened the scoring with a sixth-minute free kick and effectively sealed Juve's route through into the next round shortly before half-time with a close-range second that followed a superb solo effort from Roberto Pereyra.

Paul Pogba then made it 4-0 eight minutes after the interval as the France midfielder netted for the second game running.

Nene pulled one back for Verona four minutes, only for Alvaro Morata's 63rd-minute spot-kick and a stunning late sixth from substitute Coman to cap off the rout just three days before the league meeting between the two at the same stadium.

Gustavo Campanharo wasted a glorious early chance for Verona in the second minute as he shot well wide from close range and the visitors were quickly punished by Giovinco.

The forward found the roof of the net with a curling free kick that Verona goalkeeper Rafael was unable to keep out despite getting a strong hand to the shot.

Juve pressed to try to put the tie beyond doubt and, after Morata had been denied by Rafael, deservedly doubled their lead through a piece of brilliance from Pereyra in the 21st minute.

Pereyra showcased his electric pace as he broke down the right before cleverly poking the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Marco Storari was finally forced into action at the other end as he tipped a Nico Lopez effort over before Juve were dealt a blow when Angelo Ogbonna limped off.

The centre-back, who had earlier been the victim of a rash challenge from Nene, was replaced by Giorgio Chiellini in the 39th minute.

Despite looking far from solid at the back, Juve were always in command and Giovinco made the game safe in first-half stoppage time.

Giovinco was presented with the simple task of slotting home Stephan Lichtsteiner's pull back from point-blank range after the Swiss - fresh from extending his contract on Tuesday - had linked up well with Pereyra.

Lopez served as Verona's only real attacking threat and forced Storari to palm his swerving effort over seven minutes after the restart.

Juve immediately went down the other end and scored, though, Pogba tucking the ball home from two yards out at the second attempt after Simone Pepe's right-wing cross had deflected off Rafael Marquez.

Marquez almost instantly atoned for his defensive error by flicking a near-post corner into the path of Nene to prod into an unguarded net.

That goal was nothing more than a footnote in a devastating Juve performance, however, with Morata making it 5-1 from 12 yards.

Mexican Marquez was at fault again as he upended Giovinco, allowing the former Real Madrid man to beat Rafael low down to his right with a coolly taken penalty.

And there was still time for Juve to add another as Coman cut in from the left and powering an unstoppable shot into the top-left corner.

Elche 0-4 Barcelona (0-9 on agg.): Mathieu stunner seals emphatic Copa del Rey triumph

    819552_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Mathieu scored a sublime free kick as Barcelona completed an emphatic 9-0 aggregate Copa del Rey win over Elche with a 4-0 victory on Thursday.

Luis Enrique's side, who won the first leg 5-0, sealed their spot in the last eight thanks to first-half goals from Jeremy Mathieu, Sergi Roberto and Pedro in the return game to book a last-eight clash with Atletico Madrid.

The Catalan giants have met Atleti just once - a 3-1 victory on Sunday - since their epic clash at Camp Nou on the final day of last season.

Both sides needed a win to secure the Liga title, while a draw was enough for Atleti - a scenario that became a reality after Diego Godin cancelled out Alexis Sanchez's stunning first-half strike.

The result meant Barcelona ended the season without a major trophy for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

However, Barca know that if they can overcome Atleti then they will be favourites to lift Copa del Rey for a record 27th time after holders Real Madrid were knocked out by their city rivals.

With Barca's progression virtually secured, Mathieu opened the scoring in the second leg with a superb 25-yard free kick.

Sergi Roberto then fired in a long-distance effort of his own before Pedro continued his love affair with the Copa del Rey, netting a 43rd-minute penalty.

Highly rated debutant Alen Halilovic hit the post in the second half as Barca pressed for a fourth goal that eventually came in the 91st minute thanks to an Adriano header.

Both sides made wholesale changes with Luis Enrique calling up six players from Barcelona's B team.

That saw Munir El Haddadi and Adama Traore join Pedro in Barca's front three, while Elche made nine alterations themselves.

Elche should have been one down in the first 10 minutes, only for Adriano to scuff an effort wide after impressive work from Sergi.

The hosts were not without their own chances - Cristian Herrera's effort deflected over - but Mathieu's brilliance gave Barcelona the lead.

Elche captain Edu Albacar scythed Traore down, giving Mathieu a free kick from distance, and the Frenchman made no mistake, curling a left-footed effort into the top right corner in the 21st minute.

Goalkeeper Manu Herrera got fingertips to the effort, but could not keep it out and Barca doubled their advantage five minutes before the break.

Sergi Roberto simply controlled a pass by taking a touch before unleashing a fierce effort into the left corner from 20 yards.

It was 3-0 when Sergio Pelegrin brought down Munir with a lunge in the penalty area and Pedro made no mistake from the penalty spot, coolly slotting into the left corner.

Martin Montoya and Traore just missed the target early in the second half for Barca, while at the other end, Ferran Corominas agonisingly failed to get anything on the end of Albacar's excellent cross.

Teenage midfielder Halilovic nearly capped his competitive debut for Barcelona with a goal, only for the upright to keep out his curling left-footed effort.

The 18-year-old Croatian's cameo was the highlight of a dull second half, with the match petering out significantly in the latter stages, as Barca began to think of another clash against Diego Simeone's Atletico.

There was still time for Barcelona to score again, though, with the visitors capping an impressive away win with Adriano's stoppage-time goal.

Bayern can't repeat Madrid loss - Neuer

    701182_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has warned his team-mates they must do eveything in their power to avoid a repeat of last year's Champions League debacle against Real Madrid.

The Bundesliga champions were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Carlo Ancelotti's men in the semi-finals, with many citing a lack of focus after prematurely clinching the Bundesliga title as one of the main reasons for Bayern's disappointing performance against Madrid.

The Allianz Arena side are once again on their way to securing the domestic title at an early stage, holding an 11-point lead over second-placed Wolfsburg halfway through the season, and Neuer has stressed they cannot afford to let up this time around.

"We definitely have a comfortable lead in the Bundesliga. We enjoyed a great first half of the season, but we cannot afford to sit back and relax. We must keep going," Neuer was quoted as saying by AZ.

"I have not heard anybody say we can take it easy now in the league and then hit the gas again in the Champions League in April or May.

"We had plenty of time to prepare for the tie with Real Madrid last year as well... Real Madrid were clearly the better side in last year's semi-final. We must do everything to avoid a repeat of what happened then."

Bayern finished ahead of Manchester City, Roma and CSKA Moscow to book their ticket for the round of 16, where Shakhtar Donetsk await.

Shaqiri: I was unhappy at Bayern

    816002_heroa.jpg

New Inter signing Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed that he was unhappy at Bayern Munich due to his lack of regular first-team action, even though he also made it clear that his time at the Bundesliga champions has made him a better player.

The Switzerland international, 23, joined Bayern from Basel in June 2012 and impressed in his first season at the Allianz Arena, but he was deemed surplus to requirements by Pep Guardiola this term.

Shaqiri sealed a move to Inter last week and he is keen to use his experience from his time at Bayern to help the Serie A side win silverware again.

"I wasn’t completely happy at Bayern. I need to play because that’s the only way I can show what I’m worth," Shaqiri said at a press conference.

"I learnt lots of things at Bayern and was able to play with many great players. I’ll try to make use of my experience in Munich to win silverware with Inter."

The versatile attacker then went on to stress that he doesn't like to be compared to other players, before insisting that he is happy to play wherever head coach Roberto Mancini needs him.

"In any case, I think that all players are different and I’m not a fan of comparing myself to others. We all have our own characteristics.

"I already showed at Bayern that I can play in a variety of positions. But it’s Mancini’s job to decide where I will play. I feel most comfortable as a No.10, where I can roam across the attack and have the chance to both shoot and pass, but obviously I’ll do whatever the boss asks of me."

    Ronaldo considering comeback in USA

    817252_heroa.jpg

Former Brazil star Ronaldo could make a comeback with Fort Lauderdale Strikers, four years after hanging up his boots.

Ronaldo was unveiled as a new member of the Strikers' ownership group on Wednesday, with reports in Brazil claiming he has purchased 10 per cent of the club that plays in the United States' second-tier National American Soccer League.

While the 38-year-old has not played professionally since 2011, the two-time World Cup winner has revealed he wants to start training again in the hope he might be able to pull on Fort Lauderdale's red-and-yellow shirt in the 2015 season.

"I will try to play some games," he told Sports Illustrated.

"This year I want to train a lot.

"The last three years I didn't because I was too busy in other stuff. Maybe if we get to the final and I'm feeling good, why not? I will put my name in the NASL as an option."

Speaking about his ownership stake with the Strikers, Ronaldo claimed he could not turn down the opportunity to be involved with a team that has links with the former NASL that was run from 1968-1984.

"The Fort Lauderdale Strikers is a team with history, tradition," he said.

"Soccer in America is growing, so I think it's a great opportunity."

Ronaldo played 127 league games for Real Madrid as part of their famous 'Galacticos' era, winning La Liga in 2002-03.

He also played for PSV, Barcelona, Inter and Milan during his time in Europe, while he started and finished his club career with Cruzeiro and Corinthians, respectively, in his native Brazil.

Arsenal must be perfect to beat Manchester City – Cazorla

    812172_heroa.jpg

Santi Cazorla says Arsenal must be "perfect" if they are to beat Manchester City this weekend.

Arsenal have only lost once in their last six league matches, but that came against the only side they faced who were above them in the table - Southampton.

Arsene Wenger's charges trail City by 11 points going into Sunday's clash at the Etihad Stadium, and victory for the visitors would boost their top-four hopes.

However, Arsenal know the threat City pose at home after suffering a 6-3 thrashing at the same venue last season, and Cazorla knows nothing less than their best display will do.

"It will be a great game - if we want to win we need to play a perfect game because they are a top team," he told the club's official website. "It will be a good test for us but I am confident.

"We need to play with more spirit, with more aggression and be very focused - if not these teams will kill you. We need to be perfect if we want to win."

Arsenal are unbeaten in their two meetings with City already this season after a 2-2 draw in the league, and a 3-0 win in the Community Shield in August.

Bayern training tougher than Bundesliga, says Muller

    819842_heroa.jpg

Thomas Muller feels training at Bayern Munich is often more challenging than some of the tests the German champions face in the Bundesliga.

Bayern are on a mid-season training camp in Doha and will return to action later this month with the league title still to play for along with the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola's side lead the German top flight by 11 points and seem certain to win a third straight title - with Muller suggesting he frequently finds it more difficult to score in training against his team-mates than in league outings.

"We have a very high level in training," the Germany international told the DPA news agency.

"The defending team are part of Bayern and it is often more difficult to win against our training team than perhaps against a team in the Bundesliga.

"[This is] precisely because the tactical level is identical because, of course, everyone has the same understanding."

Bayern take on Shakhtar Donetsk in the last 16 of the Champions League, starting with the first leg in February, with a DFB-Pokal match against Eintracht Braunschweig taking place a month after.

Muller feels March and April will be key to Bayern's success this season.

"It looks good in all competitions, but in March and April it will get very interesting when it comes to the crunch," he added.

"A Champions League title you do not get cheaply."

Ancelotti admits concern over Real Madrid defensive errors

    819722_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti admits his side's defensive errors are a worry after Real Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Atletico Madrid.

Antoine Griezmann sprung the home side's defensive line to set up Fernando Torres inside a minute on Thursday, before Sergio Ramos gifted the ball to the visitors to allow Torres a second just after the break.

Ancelotti was happy with the way his side attacked in their 2-2 draw but was left to rue the defensive lapses which extended their run without a win against their city rivals.

"We found the formula to beat them last year, but not this year yet. They are a very strong team," he told reporters.

"We made mistakes we usually don't, especially in bringing the ball out of defence. I didn't think we would make those mistakes. In the first 60 minutes we played very well. At 0-1 it was more complicated, but we tried and played very well.

"We now have three weeks to prepare us for the Champions League and that's good for the team. After the 0-1 I thought we could win, because the first half went well. After the 1-2, we reacted well but the team began to think it was more difficult.

"I would be worried if we had no opportunities to score. We had intensity, rhythm... I cannot worry about that. We scored two goals. The concern is for the defensive mistakes."

Pepe was forced off during the second half and Ancelotti revealed the Portugal international will have tests on a rib injury.

"Pepe has a problem with his ribs. We will see." he said.

Madrid director Emilio Butragueno called on the team to bounce back in order to repay the support of the Santiago Bernabeu support on Thursday.

"We must thank the fans for the support," he told Canal Plus. "In both games, we were unlucky with some details.

"We played a great first half. The early goal in the second half was devastating.

"I liked Real Madrid [on the night]. The team's attitude makes us optimistic for the future. Football is football, now we have to focus to compensate the fans, who have been spectacular."

Luis Enrique wary of Atletico Madrid Copa clash

    819442_heroa.jpg

Luis Enrique has warned Barcelona will need to be at their very best for 180 minutes if they are to beat Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

A much-changed Barca secured a 9-0 aggregate win over Elche as goals from Jeremy Mathieu, Sergi Roberto, Pedro and Adriano earned a 4-0 victory on Thursday.

Atletico, meanwhile, knocked out holders Real Madrid after a 2-2 draw ensured a 4-2 aggregate triumph, and Luis Enrique is already looking ahead to the last-eight encounter against Diego Simeone's side.

"I have to praise the team for their behaviour," he told reporters after the match. "The players were at a very good level. We have a lot of players in the squad and, so far, we've been able to distribute minutes evenly.

"It will be a very difficult tie, Atletico are one of the best teams in Europe, we will require two games at a high level."

Munir El Haddadi endured another disappointing outing in front of goal for Barca but Luis Enrique insists he holds no fear that the attacker's development is stalling.

"I am very happy with Munir, he is very young," he added. "Munir is going to be a very interesting player."

Pedro is also expecting a tough test against Atletico but is more concerned with Barca's Liga match with Deportivo on Sunday.

"We've taken the match so seriously," the Spain winger told TV3. "We scored quick goals, it was a good team effort. Now we must think about La Liga.

"Every game is different. A double duel against Atletico will be tough. Last year we faced them several times. They are very intense."

Torres has proven doubters wrong - Simeone

    818842_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone believes Fernando Torres has gone some way to prove his doubters wrong after his double against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

The striker returned to Atletico this month on loan from AC Milan after a dismal spell with the Rossoneri and Chelsea, and was the hero for his side as his two goals on Thursday ensured a 2-2 draw and 4-2 aggregate win over the European champions.

"The arrival of Fernando Torres is good for us, although some people doubted it," Simeone told reporters after the match. "I'm happy for him and for all the people who came to welcome him at Vicente Calderon.

"We played a good game. We played against the best team in the world. It is normal defending near the box. We played an intelligent game. In the second half we did a very good job."

Madrid have now failed to beat their city rivals since the Champions League final last May, but Simeone claimed he would not dare suggest that Carlo Ancelotti's side have a mental block in the derby.

"We won La Liga last year against two teams that are obliged to win the Champions League and that's very difficult," he added. "I do not think Real Madrid are stuck against Atletico. I wouldn't dare to."

Atletico turn their attentions back to La Liga on Sunday, when they host Granada.

Torres and Atletico teach Madrid and Ronaldo a Ballon d'Or lesson

    819742_heroa.jpg

It was the perfect motivation. Atletico, still scarred by leaving Monday's Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich with zero reward for their astonishing achievements in 2014, watched on as Cristiano Ronaldo presented his Golden Ball to the Bernabeu crowd.

Madrid were in celebratory mood; Atleti were out to prove a point. Ronaldo was all smiles alongside Puskas prize winner James Rodriguez, Sergio Ramos and Toni Kroos (both included in the FIFPro XI on Monday as Diego Costa and Diego Godin inexplicably missed out). And less than a minute into the game, with fans only just back in their seats after raising a huge gold mosaic in Cristiano's honour, Diego Simeone's side took the lead through Fernando Torres.

"It was hard [on them]," Simeone said afterwards. "There was a big crowd and the choreography was very pretty, but such an early goal marked the rhythm of the match. It wasn't part of the [Madrid] plan."

When Torres left Atletico, he was too good for his boyhood club. And when Torres came back, they were supposedly too good for him. But much like the rest of his team-mates and his coach as well, he was out to prove a point in this match - and he did so emphatically.

After his early first, Madrid suddenly needed four and they never really recovered. Indeed, after pulling back a goal through Sergio Ramos later in the first half, Carlo Ancelotti's men made the same mistake again in the second period as Torres netted an even quicker goal from the restart. To do it once was careless; twice was unforgivable.

The Ballon d'Or has been a distraction to Madrid's start to 2015, with back-to-back defeats in the build-up to the ceremony and now this latest disappointment. Ronaldo has been off the boil, presumably preoccupied with the individual prize, while the team have failed to find the form that saw them rack up 22 straight wins before Christmas.

For Atleti, meanwhile, this was a golden opportunity to show why they should not have been ignored in Monday's gala. Simeone, who missed out on the Coach of the Year award to Germany's Joachim Low, admitted the club would work harder still to try and change opinions.

"It doesn't depend on us," he said on Wednesday. "So we have to accept things as they are and keep working in search of that acceptance."

    goal-matsum-b85a44c0-1315-47f8-88f5-f0fb3853c268.png

That will certainly have formed part of the Argentine's pre-match pep talk. Madrid celebrating their awards right under their rivals' noses merely added fuel to the fire right before kick-off.

Torres, once linked with Real, was perhaps the unexpected hero with both his side's strikes at the Bernabeu, but Simeone relishes working with players who have a point to prove. Virtually all of Atleti's side fall into that category but none more than the Spain striker, caught in a seemingly endless downward spiral over the last few seasons.

"When he came through the youth system, he was such a young kid and so much happened," Simeone said of his former team-mate after the match. "He left, he grew and now he's a man. The fans are happy and his arrival is helping us - even if many doubted."

Torres has also returned to a team transformed. Prior to Simeone's arrival as coach, Atleti had not beaten Real since 1999 - and that included all of Fernando's first spell at the Vicente Calderon between 2000 and 2007.

But under the Argentine, Atleti have now won five derbies, including three in a row before Thursday's 2-2 draw, while Torres was on the winning side on his debut last week and sealed his team's place in the last eight of the Copa del Rey with both goals on Thursday. It is quite the turnaround.

For their part, Madrid will be pleased to see the back of their city rivals for a while and Ancelotti's men - Ronaldo included - will now need to forget all about the Ballon d'Or. Atleti, however, will want to keep remembering it.

    Sunderland sign Defoe

    379637_heroa.jpg

Sunderland have completed the signing of Jermain Defoe from Toronto FC for an undisclosed fee.

Goal reported on Wednesday that the Black Cats were close to finalising a deal for the former Tottenham man, who has now signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Wearside outfit.

Defoe told his new club's official website: “It is a great club and I’ve always enjoyed coming up here and playing against Sunderland because of the stadium and the supporters. It is a great place to play and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Manager Gus Poyet added: "I know all about his attributes and his qualities first-hand and his exceptional goal-scoring record speaks for itself. He has something different, something special.

“We know each other very well - he was very young when we played together and I was coming to the end of my career, so I know him from inside the pitch.

"When I returned to Spurs as a coach it was a great experience for me to work with him, so I am really looking forward to having him as my player now and for him to be part of our team."

The 32-year-old bagged 11 goals in 19 appearances in his first season in Major League Soccer, though largely underwhelmed, and has welcomed the chance to return to the Premier League.

The likes of QPR, Hull City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City had all shown interest in bringing Defoe back to English football, though Sunderland won the race for his signature.

The former Spurs man had been training with the north London club's development squad during the MLS off-season and could take on the club where he spent nine years in his first game for the Black Cats on Saturday.

Defoe's move to Sunderland makes him the joint most transferred Premier League player in the month of January, alongside Wayne Bridge, since the window was introduced, having previously joined Tottenham (twice) and Portsmouth.

As part of the deal, meanwhile, Toronto have agreed to take out-of-favour USA striker Jozy Altidore back to MLS, with Greg Vanney's side willing to match the former Villarreal striker's wage demands.

Poyet added: “I would also like to thank Jozy as his begins his career at his new club. It is a fresh start for him and we wish him well.”

Vidic attitude is better - Mancini

    579661_heroa.jpg

Inter coach Roberto Mancini has praised the improvement in Nemanja Vidic's attitude and fitness since taking over the club in November.

The defender lost his place in the starting 11 under Walter Mazzarri as he struggled to adapt to the club's 3-5-2 formation.

But with Mancini now in charge, Vidic has been reinstated at the heart of the Inter back four and impressed in the 3-1 win over Genoa last Sunday.

"Vidic has a better attitude," Mancini said at Friday's press conference.

"He's better physically as well and he definitely has great experience and charisma. We are very happy with him and his efforts last weekend."

The Italian could be faced with a selection dilemma this weekend after Xherdan Shaqiri came through a full week of training, and Lukas Podolski and Rodrigo Palacio also vying for starting berths.

"Shaqiri trained well all week but he can't yet play 90 minutes," Mancini continued. "Osvaldo is training with the trainer and we will see how he progresses in the next couple of days.

"Palacio is 100 per cent available. The fact that we've brought in Shaqiri and Podolski gives us alternatives that we didn't have before."

Mateo Kovacic was also a hot topic of discussion, though is coach says he remains far from the finished article, with much growth still to come.

Luiz Adriano: Brazil one big family again

    591631_heroa.jpg

Brazil international Luiz Adriano says he was delighted to find a family atmosphere in the squad when he arrived to make his international debut in the November leg of the Brasil Global Tour.

Former coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's 2002 World Cup-winners were famously referred to as the the 'Scolari family' after marching to glory in Japan and South Korea 12 years ago.

And the 27-year-old believes that feel-good atmosphere has returned to the camp under new coach Dunga, saying he was humbled by the reception he received from his new colleagues.

“The guys received me well, congratulated me, and told me to stay calm and these things could happen again,” he told the official Copa America website.

“Everyone said they were there to support and help me. There it is a family, and everyone was very supportive."

The former Internacional striker went on to reveal he underwent the infamous initiation process of standing up in front of the group and singing a song.

“Oh! I had to do it, yes (laughs). I was very nervous, I’m very shy. I had to make a speech and sing a song by Fundo de Quintal, but it was pretty cool.”

The Shakhtar Donetsk forward earned his first senior international caps in the victories over Turkey and Austria last year after a prolific year in Ukraine which has left him as the Champions League’s top goalscorer with nine goals in the group stage.

Some said his call-up was long overdue, suggesting his decision to leave Brazilian football after just one season in Porto Alegre had left him with little support back home, but Luiz Adriano says he has no regrets.

“I left for Shakhtar at the right time, I attained new goals and reached new achievements,” he said.

“In Ukraine, I also experienced a new culture, therefore it was very important for the growth of my football.

"At Internacional, I won the world title which will go down in club history since it’s the most important title, even more due to a victory over Barcelona.

“For me it was great to have gone to Shakhtar and earn what I have today.”

The six-time Ukrainian league winner is now hoping to retain his place in the squad ahead of June’s Copa America in Chile.

Following the disappointment of a World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany on home soil, the pressure is on for coach Dunga to return the Selecao to their former glory – but Luiz Adriano is unperturbed by the expectations on the squad following six consecutive Brasil Global Tour victoires.

“The Brazilian national team always has pressure because we have high-quality players, the best. Everyone expects the Selecao to play good football and to always win.

“When it comes to the Selecao, you have to have victory. This is a good form of pressure. Players like it, which is important.”

Toure: Bony will be 'brilliant' for Manchester City

    819922_heroa.jpg

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is convinced new club team-mate and Ivory Coast compatriot Wilfried Bony will be "brilliant" for the Premier League outfit.

Bony secured his move to the Etihad this week, signing a four-and-a-half-year deal after agreeing a €35 million move from Swansea City.

Toure and Bony will both be focused on the Africa Cup of Nations in January as they aim to lead the Elephants to a second success in the competition, but the midfielder cannot wait to see the 26-year-old impress for his new side.

"He's a good player and I think he's going to be a brilliant player for the club," Toure told reporters. "Now he's a [club] team-mate we're all looking forward."

Toure is also confident Ivory Coast can make an impact in Equatorial Guinea, as they face Guinea, Mali and Cameroon in Group D before potential involvement in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and tournament decider.

"It's an important competition for African players … we will see, our first game is on the 20th of January," the midfielder said. "It's going to be tough but we've got the team to do it."

If it was the Champions League final Alaba would play - Guardiola

    394665_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola is relishing David Alaba's return to action following his two-month lay-off with a knee injury.

The Austria international tore the medial ligament and damaged the meniscus in his right knee during Bayern's 2-0 Champions League victory over Roma in November.

Alaba returned to training earlier this month, though, and the full-back could return when Bayern are back in Bundesliga action at Wolfsburg on January 30 following the mid-season break.

Guardiola stated the importance of Alaba to the German champions and hailed his consistent level of performance."If tomorrow was the Champions League final he would play," Guardiola said."We ask him every day how his knee is, everything is great.

"With him we are a better team, he can play anywhere. He is outstanding."On a scale of one to 10, he has always been an eight or a nine, sometimes 10. He is one of the most important players for Bayern Munich."

Guardiola also confirmed that Javi Martinez has yet to start working with the ball as he recovers from a long-term knee injury, while stating his hope that centre-back Mehdi Benatia will recover from a back complaint in time for the Wolfsburg fixture.

"For him [Benatia] it [the back injury] is a pity," he added. "His condition has already improved. We still have two weeks."

Juventus launch €24m move for Manchester City striker Jovetic

    800852_heroa.jpg

Juventus have lodged an official bid for Manchester City striker Stevan Jovetic, Goal can reveal.

The Serie A champions have offered a €2.6 million fee to take Jovetic on loan for the rest of the season, and would be obliged to pay a further €21.6m, spread over two annual instalments, for a permanent transfer.

A number of Italian clubs have shown an interest in the former Fiorentina striker ever since his move to England in 2013.

The 25-year-old's first season in English football was plagued by injury, which alerted a number of suitors to his potential availability.

City resolved to keep him, however, and he started the 2014-15 season as one of just three strikers at the Etihad Stadium following the departure of Alvaro Negredo to Valencia.

But his suitors have returned in recent months and it is understood several teams remain interested in taking him back to Italy.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini, however, said in his Friday press conference that the €35m arrival of Wilfried Bony will not affect Jovetic's standing in the squad.

"Yes of course he has a future here, Stevan is a very important player for us. Bony arrived now in the winter transfer [window], it was a decision we took after selling Alvaro Negredo," he said.

"He is replacing Alvaro. The squad worked with Alvaro so if we sold him it was because he had a personal problem that he didn't want to continue here. But Bony just replaces Alvaro, he's not replacing Stefan Jovetic."

It is expected, though, that the Premier League champions will be tempted by the possibility of reclaiming almost all of the €29m they paid for Jovetic just 18 months ago.

City were hit with a €64m Uefa fine for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations last year, which in turn meant the club could spend a maximum of €64m in the summer transfer market, as well as keeping their wage bill level, in order to receive a refund of that sanction.

    Schar open to Inter move

    566221_heroa.jpg

Basel defender Fabian Schar has admitted he could be tempted to move on if Inter were to make a move for him, but insists he is focused on his current club for now.

The Switzerland international's contract with Basel is due to expire in June 2016 and clubs such as Inter, AC Milan, Juventus and Arsenal are all believed to be keeping a close eye on him.

However, Schar - who is currently recovering from an ankle injury - is in no rush to make a decision about his future.

"I have heard about their interest. It's normal in football that there's always a lot of speculation. Inter are a great team," Schar told Blick.

"But I still have a contract with Basel and I am very satisfied here. I am not thinking about my future for now.

"I have a contract for one-and-a-half more years and I don't feel any pressure to make a decision.

"My main priority now is to become fully match fit again."

Schar, 23, has made close to 100 appearances for Basel since joining the Swiss giants from FC Wil in July 2012.
