:love:West Ham 1-1 Manchester United: Blind steals point for disappointing Reds

    922422_heroa.jpg

Daley Blind struck a dramatic late equaliser as 10-man Manchester United claimed a draw against West Ham.

Cheikhou Kouyate, slotting in at centre-back rather than his customary midfield role due to a host of defensive injury problems for Irons manager Sam Allardyce, teed himself up to volley emphatically home four minutes into the second half of what had been an attritional contest.

Despite fielding a side that boasted the esteemed attacking talents of Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao, Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria, Manchester United rarely threatened home goalkeeper Adrian as they failed to dislodge Southampton in third.

Blind cast himself as the visitors' unlikely goal hero two minutes into added time, when West Ham were unable to clear Marcos Rojo's speculative punt forward.

United finished the match with 10 men as full-back Luke Shaw collected a second booking.

Both teams made five changes from their previous outings and there was a nervous early moment for Kouyate in his unfamiliar position.

The Senegal international was sold short by an ill-advised pass from Alex Song inside his own area after six minutes but Van Persie was unable to pounce on an opportunity to open the scoring.

West Ham carried the greater threat during the opening stages and visiting goalkeeper David De Gea was at full-stretch to turn an Enner Valencia drive behind following a poor defensive header by Rojo.

From the resulting 15th-minute corner De Gea frustrated Valencia again by touching an acrobatic effort over.

Robust challenges by Van Persie and Phil Jones prompted touchline fury from Allardyce and, after the latter foul, James Tomkins forced De Gea to save with his legs on the end of Aaron Creswell's floated delivery.

Di Maria thudded a drive into Adrian's chest five minutes before referee Mark Clattenburg called time on a disjointed first-half display by the Red Devils.

Van Gaal's charges appeared susceptible to set-pieces from the home team and that weakness was wonderfully punished by Kouyate in the 49th minute.

Jones and Rooney could not clear Mark Noble's flighted free-kick, leaving Kouyate to flick the ball up twice before swivelling to lash a volley beyond De Gea from seven yards.

A split-second of hesitation from Van Persie allowed Tomkins to make a vital last-ditch challenge in the 57th minute, while a cross by West Ham full-back Carl Jenkinson from the right channel almost snuck in at the far post to double the hosts' lead.

Falcao undermined his reputation as a clinical goal poacher when he prodded wide off balance after a return pass from Van Persie unpicked the West Ham defence.

The roles were reversed in the 82nd minute as Van Persie blasted too close to Adrian from Falcao's pass - Mark Noble proving similarly wasteful at the other end five minutes later.

Noble's miss was one West Ham would regret as Blind rifled a low shot past Adrian before Shaw's late lunge on Stewart Downing provided a marginally earlier end to his evening's work.

Newcastle United 1-1 Stoke City: Crouch snatches point at the death

    921602_heroa.jpg

Peter Crouch came off the bench to head home Stoke City's equaliser as they claimed a draw against Newcastle United.

Despite dominating possession, Stoke looked set for defeat at St James' Park when Jack Colback gave Newcastle the lead in the 74th minute.

The midfielder found the net with a low shot beyond Asmir Begovic to put the Magpies on course to leapfrog Stoke and move into the top half of the table.

Mark Hughes' side may have been aggrieved to see Colback still on the field after he was not shown a second caution for a challenge on Victor Moses three minutes earlier.

But the introduction of Crouch proved telling as the substitute struck with a far-post header to earn Stoke the point their performance merited.

Stoke stay 10th in the table, two points ahead of 11th-placed Newcastle.

An unchanged Newcastle side were denied an opening goal by goalkeeping heroics from Begovic in the 10th minute.

The Bosnian reacted brilliantly to tip Remy Cabella's near-post header over the crossbar after the France international had ghosted into the box to meet a left-wing cross from compatriot Moussa Sissoko.

John Carver's side had some joy down the right of the Stoke defence without creating too much in the way of goalscoring opportunities, although Sammy Ameobi drew another save from Begovic with a curling effort from the edge of the area.

The hosts continued to show the greater quality in front of goal in a largely dour first half but were not clinical when they did create chances, Ayoze Perez firing narrowly wide of the left-hand post following a throughball from Cabella.

And Newcastle were almost punished for their lack of a cutting edge in first-half injury time as the agile Tim Krul was forced to spring to his left to turn Mame Biram Diouf's diving header wide.

Stoke's backline - already without the presence of captain Ryan Shawcross - was dealt a blow when Marc Wilson limped off to be replaced by Geoff Cameron.

Newcastle threw on Papiss Cisse - back from the Africa Cup of Nations - in search of the opener, which finally arrived when Colback netted his second of the season.

The former Sunderland man drilled into the bottom-left corner, just moments after his foul on Moses, from just inside the area following good link-up play between Daryl Janmaat and Sissoko.

Jon Walters saw a half-volley drift wide as Stoke attempted to snatch a point and their late pressure paid off as Crouch met Cameron's cross with a fine header to ensure a share of the spoils despite Fabricio Coloccini's attempted goal-line clearance.

Cagliari 1-2 Roma: Ljajic and Paredes end winless run in Serie A

    921042_heroa.jpg

A goal each for Adem Ljajic and Leandro Paredes and an impressive showing from young Daniele Verde ensured a 2-1 win for Roma over Cagliari on Sunday.

Rudi Garcia's side had seen themselves fall 10 points behind Juventus on Saturday following the champions' win over AC Milan, with a series of draws scuppering their hopes of maintaining a title charge.

However, Ljajic's prodded finish - set up by a delightful chipped pass from Verde - gave Roma the lead in a scrappy first half, and Paredes sealed the win through a fine effort in the closing stages, with a stoppage-time goal from Paul-Jose M'Poku coming too late for Gianfranco Zola's men.

It was Verde who came closest for Roma in the first half-hour as he raced clear through the centre of the area, but he could only sidefoot inches wide of the near post.

At the other end, Duje Cop called Morgan De Sanctis in to action with a shot from the edge of the area as Cagliari pressed Roma high up across the pitch, though chances remained few and far between for much of the half.

However, Roma took the lead shortly before the interval, with the impressive Verde clipping a clever ball over the top and into the path of Ljajic, who stabbed home into the roof of the net.

Cop came close again for Cagliari, forcing De Sanctis to parry his effort from Joao Pedro's knockdown, before wasting a golden chance to level following Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa's failure to clear, when he could only fire over the crossbar when clean through.

And Roma made them pay on the break in the closing stages, with Verde firing in a cross from the left which was met with a brilliant strike from substitute Paredes.

Mpoko climbed highest to power home a cross from Danilo Avelar in stoppage time, but it was too little too late for Cagliari.

Burnley 2-2 West Brom: Baggies fight back to earn important point

    920552_heroa.jpg

Brown Ideye's second-half header secured a point for West Brom as they fought back to claim a draw against Burnley.

First-half headers from Ashley Barnes and Danny Ings put the home side firmly in control, until Chris Brunt reduced the arrears from a corner on the stroke of half-time.

And it was another set-piece that proved Burnley's downfall midway through the second period as substitute Ideye glanced home Brunt's delivery.

For West Brom, captained by Darren Fletcher on debut following a move from Manchester United, it was a positive response to last week's 3-0 defeat by Tottenham, though Pulis benched Saido Berahino following comments in the week about his future at the club.

The point takes Burnley back out of the bottom three after Hull City had displaced them on Saturday but with a tough run of fixtures to come, Dyche will see this as a huge opportunity lost.

Burnley, who named the same starting XI for the 10th league game in succession, had the better of the opening exchanges with Ings firing over before Ben Foster produced a superb one-handed save to tip Scott Arfield's effort onto the crossbar.

And Burnley's pressure paid off in the 11th minute as they broke the deadlock.

Arfield headed the ball into the path of Ings, and his hooked cross found strike partner Barnes who nodded in from six yards.

Berahino, who attracted attention in midweek when he suggested he could move away from West Brom at the end of the season, was soon summoned into the action due to an injury to Victor Anichebe.

The visitors managed to get something of a foothold in the game, but Burnley doubled their lead in the 32nd minute thanks to their top scorer.

A clever dummy from Kieran Trippier down the right-hand side released George Boyd, whose inviting cross was met by a powerful Ings header, leaving Foster stranded.

Just when it seemed the hosts would reach the interval with a comfortable lead, Brunt lost his man at a corner and headed Callum McManaman's delivery in off the bar from close range.

Brunt then turned provider for the equaliser, sending in a corner from the right that half-time substitute Ideye flicked home having escaped the attentions of David Jones.

Joleon Lescott headed Jason Shackell's effort off the line, while Gareth McAuley was fortunate to see a handball in his own penalty area go unpunished.

Berahino was almost the hero for Albion in the dying moments, but Tom Heaton and Ben Mee combined to keep him out and prevent Burnley from capitulating fully on home turf again.

Inzaghi encouraged by AC Milan despite Juventus defeat

    919592_heroa.jpg

AC Milan's performance in Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Serie A champions Juventus can be used as a "starting point" to reignite the San Siro club's stuttering season, says Filippo Inzaghi.

Goals from Carlos Tevez and Leonardo Bonucci sandwiched Luca Antonelli's effort on his second Milan debut before Alvaro Morata settled the contest for Juve.Giampaolo Pazzini was denied by a fine Gianluigi Buffno save with the scores at 2-1, and Inzaghi saw plenty of positives in Milan's game.

He said: "Despite many relevant absentees, I think that the team showed a great attitude today. "It's pretty clear that playing against a full-strength Juventus side is not easy for anyone, otherwise they wouldn't have won all those games so far.

"But I think that we were always in the game and in fact we also had the chance to make it 2-2 with Pazzini and we could have reopened the game."So, despite the defeat I think that this can be a new starting point.""Obviously we should make fewer mistakes because we conceded goals like sitting ducks.

"But I think that both the second half against Parma and today's game can be new starting points for us while we recover the 14 injured players we've got."Milan have now lost all of their last five Serie A games against Juventus.

Inzaghi's side have won just once in their last seven Serie A outings and remain ten points off Italy's final Champions League place.

Manchester United lead race for Feyenoord defender Kongolo

    445307_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are leading the race to sign highly-rated Feyenoord defender Terence Kongolo in the summer.

Kongolo is a target for former Feyenoord manager Ronald Koeman at Southampton while Manchester City are also interested in re-uniting the 20-year-old with his brother Rodney, who is part of their under-18 squad.

United, however, are favourites to sign Kongolo, with Louis van Gaal a huge admirer of the centre-back having given him his Netherlands debut and named him in Holland's 2014 World Cup squad.

    918152.jpg

Van Gaal will be in the market for defenders in the summer and will look to sign a top class defender such as Mats Hummels or Diego Godin.

But he wants further depth at centre-back and United will listen to offers for Phil Jones and Chris Smalling as they look to bolster their backline.

Talks have been held over a move for Kongolo, who is represented by a British-based agency that have also signed up his brother and Feyenoord team-mates Tonny Vilhena and Jean-Paul Boetius.

Vilhena, a Netherlands under-21 international, was a target for Southampton in January and Koeman is expected to return with a bid for the midfielder in the summer.

Osvaldo edges closer to Boca switch

    794232_heroa.jpg

Boca Juniors are on the verge of completing a loan deal for Italy international Daniel Osvaldo.

The Argentina-born Southampton striker has been on loan at Inter this season but has been deemed surplus to requirements at San Siro following an on-field bust-up with teammate Mauro Icardi.

Osvaldo was a club-record €15 million signing for Southampton but was shown the exit by the Premier League club after a physical altercation with Jose Fonte during a training session.

The 29-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus, recently revealed his desire to join Boca and the Argentine club have confirmed they are confident of a sealing a transfer.

“We are very close to signing the player,” said Boca general secretary Cesar Martucci.

“We are negotiating with Inter and expect a definitive answer, but there is good will on all sides.”Boca hope to seal an agreement with Inter and Southampton to take Osvaldo on loan until June, with the option of extending it by a month should Boca reach the latter stage of the Copa Libertaodres.

Osvaldo arrived in Buenos Aires on Saturday where he is expected to finalise a deal that Boca hope to make permanent with a two-year contract following the end of the initial loan spell. The club are reported to have agreed to grant him leave every six weeks in order to travel back to Italy to see his family.

Boca have been busy during coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena's first full transfer window as he prepares for the club's Libertadores return, with Alexis Rolin, Gino Peruzzi, Marco Torsiglieri, Fabian Monzon and Pablo Perez all having already arrived from Europe, while Uruguay international Nicolas Lodeiro has joined from Brazilian club Corinthians.

Lambert lashes out at Chelsea staff after spat

    917722_heroa.jpg

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has accused an unnamed member of Chelsea's backroom staff of being verbally abusive during Saturday's Premier League clash between the two sides.

Jose Mourinho won at Villa Park for the first time in five attempts as the leaders triumphed 2-1 to extend their lead at the top of the table to seven points.

However, there appeared to be an angry exchange between the two benches during the first half, and the incident drew the ire of Lambert.

"It was something said but not by Jose," he told reporters.

"He is a great manager, it is fantastic what the guy has done. I would love to learn from him as football manager but I wouldn't like to learn things off the pitch from somebody in his dugout.

"I don’t know what was said - I don't speak Portuguese, maybe he doesn't speak Glaswegian.

"I went to shake Mourinho's hand, but Jose was half way down the pitch so I didn't get a chance."

Mourinho, who claimed at his post-match news conference that he was unaware of any incident, praised Villa after the match, yet his comments were met with some scepticism by Lambert.

He added: "Maybe he is trying to put pressure on me, I don't know."

It is not the first time the two managers have been involved in a flash-point.

Earlier this season, Lambert snubbed Mourinho's attempt to shake hands before the full-time whistle in Chelsea's 3-0 win in the reverse fixture in September.

Wenger: Someone else will give Kane a passport if England don't want him

    915132_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has urged Roy Hodgson to give Tottenham striker Harry Kane a call up for England following his heroics in the north London derby.

The Spurs forward was the match-winner at White Hart Lane scoring twice as the hosts recovered from going a goal down, to beat their neighbours 2-1.

Kane has now scored 22 goals in 34 games so far this season and while he has featured for England at Under-21 level he is eligible to play for Republic of Ireland.

Hodgson was in attendance at White Hart Lane, with England set to face Lithuania in European Championship qualifying at the end of March, and Wenger says Kane deserves a call-up.

“When you have scored the number of goals he has scored, if you don't put him in there somebody else will give him a passport,” he told BBC Sport.

Kane, meanwhile, sought to play down England talk after the match and insists he is simply focused on continuing his fine form.

"The next England game is not until March and there is a lot of football to play before then,” he added.

“I have just got to keep doing what I am doing and do my best for the team, and we will see what happens.

"I am working on all aspects of my game and when I get in those areas I am confident.

"I am enjoying my football at the moment and playing with a smile on my face."

    Cristiano Ronaldo blasts 'unintelligent' reporter

    917202_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo showed his frustration following Saturday’s 4-0 derby thrashing from city rivals Atletico by blasting a reporter for what he perceived as an ‘unintelligent’ line of questioning.

Liga leaders Real suffered their worst defeat since a 5-0 drubbing from Barcelona at Camp Nou in 2010 in what coach Carlo Ancelotti labelled the darkest day of his time in charge of the 10-time European champions.

And Ronaldo was visibly miffed shortly after the game when one reporter asked him to clear up what he meant when he motioned to his Club World Cup-winning badge on his shirt following his sending off against Cordoba on January 24.“Do you want to talk about what happened today or about Cordoba, that was three months [sic] ago now,” he said.

“What do you want me to say? If you were an intelligent journalist you’d ask me questions about today’s game.“You are not intelligent. Sorry.”

Real Madrid will see their lead at the top of La Liga cut to one point if Barcelona can prevail against Athletic Bilbao at San Memes on Sunday.

Ferguson influenced Man Utd exit, admits Fletcher

    913762_heroa.jpg

Darren Fletcher has revealed that he sought the advice of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson before opting to join West Brom on transfer deadline day.

The Scotland midfielder spent 12 years with United before opting to leave the club due to a lack of first-team football.

Fletcher sealed a move to the Hawthorns after a switch to West Ham fell through and the 31-year-old says he was influenced by his former boss when making his decision.

He said: "Yes, I spoke to him, why wouldn't you? When I was making my decision, I bounced a few things off him,

"When someone has been such an influence on you and has given you great advice on and off the pitch all through your career you have to use these people.

"We had a fantastic chat and I know he has great relationship with Tony Pulis, as he has with lots of managers throughout the league.

"He didn't necessarily recommend Albion but we spoke about the pros and cons of different clubs around the country and he couldn't speak highly enough of Albion.

"I've spoken before about him in these situations, not only from a football point of view but a personal point of view and how he cared for me more in that situation than actual football side of things and that speaks volumes about him."

Fletcher could make his Albion debut in Sunday's Premier League clash at Burnley.
