Mascherano: Barcelona must follow 'leader' Messi

    924522_heroa.jpg

Javier Mascherano has called on Barcelona's players to rally behind Lionel Messi in order to make the most of the fine form their "leader" is currently enjoying.

Since losing at Real Sociedad in their first game after the winter break, the Blaugrana have racked up nine successive victories in all competitions, with Messi playing a key role in that remarkable run.

The Argentina captain has scored 10 goals and created seven others during Barca's winning streak and Mascherano says Luis Enrique's men have to do everything they can to help their talismanic No.10 extend his purple patch."When Leo shines, the team always grows stronger because he is a player who gives you so many things," the versatile defender told Rac1.

"We must make the most of the good moment he is in and follow him like the footballing leader that he is."We had a very good start to the season. Then came some slip-ups.

"But now we're back on the path we started on and we want to finish our season in the best way."Barca will be looking to make it 10 wins in a row when they host Villarreal in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening.

Mascherano, though, is taking nothing for granted, given how well the Yellow Submarine performed in a 3-2 loss in Catalunya on February 1.

"They are a good team and they have already show us at Camp Nou what they can do," the former Liverpool man added."A bad game can arrive at any time, so we must try to continue increasing our confidence.

"We have to just think game by game. Our goal is to get the end of the season still fighting for every title."

Coleman: Bale can cope with Real Madrid boo boys

    913052_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale has the mental strength to deal with being booed by disgruntled Real Madrid fans, according to Wales boss Chris Coleman.

The winger joined the Blancos from Tottenham last year for a world-record fee of €100 million and enjoyed a fine finish to his first season in Spain, scoring a sensational winner in the capital club's Copa del Rey triumph over Barcelona before then bagging the vital second goal in last May's 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final.

However, despite netting 14 times in 31 appearances so far this term, Bale has been targeted by the Santiago Bernabeu faithful in recent weeks for his allegedly selfish play and inconsistent form.

Coleman, though, is in no doubt that the 25-year-old can deal with being whistled and jeered by his own club's supporters."He can handle that no problem at all," the Wales coach is quoted as saying by BBC Sport. "I'm not worried about him.

"If you go to Madrid for that amount of money and you know that the spotlight is on you then you can either handle it or you can't handle it."In his first season they won the Champions League, which was their holy grail - and he was a huge part of that campaign.

"It's his turn now to get some criticism. It won't bother him. He'll be fine. He'll get through it."

Aubameyang: I never considered bailing on Dortmund

    915392_heroa.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he never thought about bailing on Borussia Dortmund during the winter break, revealing that he is determined to help Jurgen Klopp's struggling side save their season.

The Gabon international netted twice as BVB triumphed 3-0 at Freiburg on Saturday to lift themselves off the bottom of the Bundesliga and up to 16th in the standings.

Aubameyang now intends to fire Dortmund to safety, insisting that at no point during the winter transfer window did he consider quitting Signal Iduna Park, while at the same time admitting that the prospect of being cup-tied for the Champions League affected his thinking.

"Did I think about leaving in January? Not at all," the striker said in an interview with RMC.

"I could not see myself leaving already because when you have played in the Champions League for one club, you cannot play in it for another club in the same season. "Besides, I am doing well this season. The coach has confidence in me."So, I want to continue here and make sure that we save our season."However, while Aubameyang says is happy at Dortmund, he freely admits that he would love to rejoin former club Saint-Etienne at some point in the future.

"I'm still watching Saint-Etienne's games," the 25-year-old added. "They're a part of me.

"So, would I like to go back? Yes, I sincerely hope so. "This is a club that had a big effect on me. It's a football city and the fans were very good to me."

Aubameyang joined Dortmund in July 2013, penning a five-year contract with the club.

Ribery ready to return for Bayern Munich

    708212_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich have been boosted by the news that Franck Ribery is confident of being fit for this weekend's Bundesliga clash with Hamburg.

The French winger has not featured for the Bavarians so far this year because of a thigh problem but returned to training on Monday and is optimistic about his chances of featuring at the Allianz Arena.

"We'll see how the muscle reacts to stress now," Ribery told reporters. "But I hope to play against Hamburg on Saturday."

Rafinha also rejoined the group on Monday after missing the German champions' first three games back after the winter break with ankle ligament damage.

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola will be delighted to have the pair available for selection again, with Bayern set to travel to Ukraine on February 17 for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Bavarians made a poor start to the second half of their Bundesliga campaign, losing to second-placed Wolfsburg before drawing at home to Schalke, but they returned to winning ways at Stuttgart at the weekend to maintain their eight-point lead at the top of the table.

Hamstring injury blow for Atletico ace Koke

    927392_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid have announced that midfield ace Koke suffered a hamstring injury in Saturday's Liga win over city rivals Real.

The 23-year-old hobbled off just 10 minutes into the derby clash at the Vicente Calderon, clutching his left thigh as he exited the field.

Koke's condition was assessed at the FREMAP clinic in the Spanish capital in Monday and it was subsequently revealed that he is now facing an unspecified stint on the sidelines.

"The test results confirm that the home-grown player suffered a grade II muscle injury on the hamstring of his left thigh," a statement on Atletico's official website read.Koke's injury is an undoubted blow for Atletico, who drew back to within four points of Liga leaders Real by routing Carlo Ancelotti's side 4-0 at the Vicente Calderon.

However, Rojiblancos boss Diego Simeone will take heart from the fact that Saul Niguez, who came on in place of the injured Koke on Saturday, had an excellent derby, netting the home side's second goal.

Atletico continue the defence of their Spanish title with a trip to Celta on Sunday, while they face Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 of the Champions League later this month.

Di Maria 'very content' at Manchester United

    928222_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria insists he is "very content" at Manchester United despite suggestions that he is unsettled in England.

The former Real Madrid star, who made the move to Old Trafford in a club-record £59.7 million (€74m) deal in the summer, hit the headlines last week after his Cheshire home was targeted by burglars following United's 3-1 win over Leicester City.

Goal understands United are doing everything in their power to allay Di Maria's fears after the incident and the Argentina international insists he is happy in England, with support from the club's fans helping him feel settled.

When asked how he's finding life in Manchester, he told Fifa's official website: "Very well. The weather is the only thing ... it doesn't help a lot.

"But I'm very content here. The people have a lot of affection for me, which is the most important thing. It's what I value most, and I have that here."

Asked how his grasp of the English language was progressing, Di Maria added: "More like regressing! It's very bad. [I've learned] very little and only understand a small bit.

"That said, I'm trying to learn it bit by bit and I'm taking classes. Hopefully I'll pick it up quickly."

Di Maria began his career with Rosario Central before moving to Benfica in 2007 and the 26-year-old insists he would like to return to Argentina when his Manchester United career is over.

He said: "The next step will be to return to Rosario Central, another giant of the game! Truth be told, I've played for Europe's biggest clubs, competed in two World Cups and won the Champions League.

"I represented Real Madrid and before that was with Benfica, which, while a slightly smaller club than Madrid, is a giant of Portuguese football.

"Now I'm with another massive club in Manchester United. When I finish here, I think it might be time to return to Argentina. Hopefully that happens."

Luiz Adriano: I wanted to join Roma

    928592_heroa.jpg

Shakhtar Donetsk striker Luiz Adriano has admitted that he was desperate to join Roma during the winter transfer window.

After agreeing to allow Mattia Destro move to Serie A rivals AC Milan in January, the Giallorossi made strengthening their forward line their top priority.

Luiz Adriano was their No.1 target but Shakhtar rejected an estimated €13 million bid for the Brazilian and Roma instead decided to acquire Moussa Doumbia from CSKA Moscow and Victor Ibarbo from Cagliari."We know that the two clubs failed to reach an agreement and that's why I stayed here," Luiz Adrano told Sky Sport Italia.

"Roma are a team that play good football. They played in the Champions League this season and are still fighting to win the Scudetto."We're talking about a club with a great history. It certainly would have pleased me to have been able to wear the Giallorossi shirt.

"It would also have been a great chance to play in a different part of Europe.
"But I will continue to do my best for this squad, as I've always done, and I hope that we can win other trophes, as has happened in the last few years."

Luiz Adriano is the top scorer in this season's Champions League, having netted nine times in the group stage.

The 27-year-old attacker, who arrived in Ukraine in 2007, will now be hoping to add to his tally when Shakhtar face Bayern Munich in the last 16 later this month.

:baffled:Real Madrid fans angered by Ronaldo party after derby thrashing

    928142_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid supporters have made their disgust clear after Cristiano Ronaldo went ahead with his birthday celebrations despite his side's thrashing by Atletico Madrid.
The Liga leaders were humiliated by their city rivals on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 4-0 hammering at the Vicente Calderon, which cut the gap between the sides to four points.

Ronaldo, who turned 30 last week, opted to continue with his pre-planned birthday celebrations in the capital on the night after the derby, causing some consternation within the squad.Supporters have also been less than impressed with leaked images of Madrid's players enjoying themselves at the party.

Two fans were pictured outside the Valdebebas training complex on Monday holding a banner which read, "Your laughter, our shame".

Ronaldo's representative, Jorge Mendes, has stated that the Portugal star was right to go ahead with his celebrations but admitted that his client was disappointed that pictures from the party were leaked on social media sites."He is very upset about the images from his birthday that have come out. It was meant to be a private celebration," the agent told Cadena Ser.

"He could not postpone his birthday party because all his family and friends had already come to Madrid, even if he was very disappointed by the defeat against Atletico Madrid."The people should support and help him. He is the best professional in the world, an example to follow and he will set this right."

Madrid, who still lead La Liga by a point from Barcelona, will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they host Deportivo at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Leicester City manager Pearson hits out at pundits after sacking rumour

    927602_heroa.jpg

Nigel Pearson insists he remains the Leicester City manager despite intense speculation on Sunday that he had been sacked.

Reports suggested the 51-year-old had been relieved of his duties after defeat at home to relegation rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday left the Foxes marooned at the bottom of the Premier League.

A second-half goal from Joe Ledley condemned Leicester to a third league defeat in a row and Pearson caused controversy late on when he became embroiled in a bizarre touchline altercation with Eagles midfielder James McArthur.

In a scheduled press conference on Monday, the 51-year-old reiterated that he remains in charge at the King Power Stadium but refused to provide any clarification on how the speculation over his position had arisen.

"I am, today, managing this club as I have been for the last three and three-quarter years, and I am looking to get my team as best prepared as possible for a big game against Arsenal," Pearson told reporters.
"I understand the interest and you wanting to ask questions, but I have loyalties to the people I work for, my staff and the players, which really is more important to me than trying to clarify things for a story which was based on speculation.

"I can't see too much mileage in discussing yesterday. What I feel, if I have got things to say I will say it in the appropriate manner to the appropriate people.

"I don't think I have ever been in a position where I speak too openly about what goes on in internal workings.

"I've always had a good working relationship with the owners and I'm sure I will moving forward. The bottom line is you are never going to have a situation at any football club where things are entirely going the way you want all the time.

"We are currently bottom, there is speculation and unfortunately sometimes stories like this break. For me, I have to continue to lead the players. In an ideal world I would rather the story would not be out there but it is and I have to deal with that."

Pearson also took the opportunity to criticise the media coverage of his clash with McArthur - the Leicester boss appeared to grab the Crystal Palace midfielder by the throat and prevented him from returning to the pitch by holding onto his arm.

"It's not helpful when the three fountains of knowledge on 'Match of the Day' make a mountain out of a molehill," he added.

"There was nothing in that. The lad's OK, it was all lighthearted."

Fresh blow for Khedira as midfielder suffers hamstring injury

    927752_heroa.jpg

Sami Khedira has suffered another blow in what has been a disappointing season after Real Madrid confirmed the midfielder has sustained a hamstring injury.

The Germany international made only his third La Liga start of 2014-15 in Saturday's 4-0 derby hammering against Atletico Madrid, but was substituted at half-time.

World Cup-winner Khedira has since been sent for a scan and the European champions on Monday confirmed that the 27-year-old is set for another spell on the sidelines.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Following the medical tests carried out on Sami Khedira by the Real Madrid doctors in the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital, the player has been diagnosed with an injury to his left biceps femoris injury. His progress will be monitored."Khedira has endured a frustrating campaign in which he has been troubled by injuries and overlooked by Carlo Ancelotti when fully fit.

The former Stuttgart man's contract expires at the end of the season and he continues to be linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu.

Zidane is being prepared for Real Madrid job, says Michel

    927422_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid midfielder Michel says Zinedine Zidane is already being prepared as the next head coach at Santiago Bernabeu.

Michel, who made more than 400 appearances for Madrid during his playing career, was sacked as Olympiakos boss earlier this season and has been questioned in the past about a possible return to the current European champions.
However, the 51-year-old believes Zidane, the current coach of the Madrid Castilla side, is the club's clear favourite to succeed Carlo Ancelotti in future.

He told Elite Sport: "I won't be the next candidate. It's not that I don't feel qualified, nor that I'd not want it, but it doesn't depend on me or results. Plus, I think the club is preparing for Zidane to be the next coach."

Michel is confident that Ancelotti is the right man to lead Madrid for the time being, however, adding: "Ancelotti is an ideal coach for Madrid. He doesn't want to be the protagonist. He moves very well in these waters."Lastly, the former Spain international admitted it was a bitter blow to leave Olympiakos after leading the club to back-to-back Greek Super League titles.

"The president, as club owner, took the decision and I have to accept it. It hurts not to have finished my work," he added.

"I think I've done well in the last two years, but I have to accept what comes."

:yes:Beckham: Kane deserves England call up

    926502_heroa.jpg

Former England captain David Beckham has added his voice to the chorus calling for Tottenham striker Harry Kane to be given a call up to the national team.

Kane has displayed fantastic form in recent months and the Premier League's man of the moment enjoyed another day to remember on Sunday as his double brought Spurs from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1.

Those goals took the 21-year-old's tally to 22 in all competitions for the season, more than any Premier League player, leading to fans and pundits urging England manager Roy Hodgson to include Kane in his squad for March's fixtures against Lithuania and Italy.

Former Manchester United and Real Madrid star Beckham - who earned 59 of his 115 England caps as skipper - is among those who believe that Kane has earned the chance to shine on the international stage.

"Being English and seeing someone like Harry and the way he's playing and the way he's played this season, he's having a stunning year," Beckham said at a Unicef gala on Monday.

"I think everyone is singing his praises and rightly so. He's 21-years-old, he's working hard and has got a good head on his shoulders so we will see.

"It doesn't matter what age you are - if you're good enough then you should play."

England face Lithuania in a Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley on March 27 before travelling to Italy for a friendly four days later.

Pressure on Man Utd, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool in top-four race - Fonte

    924842_heroa.jpg

Southampton captain Jose Fonte says that the pressure is all on his side's rivals as they push for a Champions League place.

Ronald Koeman's Saints sit third in the Premier League table after 24 matches thanks to Saturday's late 1-0 win at QPR.

Only six points separate Southampton, on 45, and sixth-placed Liverpool, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal Tin between them and Fonte expects those behind them to struggle with the expectation.

"Those teams have all the pressure in the world," he told reporters.

"For us, no-one really believes in us, no-one really thinks that we're going to get there but we as players and the group believe in ourselves and we're going to be fighting for that.

"It's going to be like this until the end, I think. As we said before the game, we just need to keep going game by game, keep digging, grinding the results out and we'll see in the end where that takes us."

Southampton are in action on Wednesday, as they host West Ham to St Mary's.

Alexis Sanchez back for Leicester clash, confirms Wenger

    828292_heroa.jpg

Alexis Sanchez is fit again and available to face Leicester City, Arsene Wenger has confirmed, with the club's topscorer having missed Saturday's north London derby defeat to Tottenham.

The Chile international, who has 12 goals and seven assists in 21 Premier League appearances this term, has been nursing a hamstring problem that caused him to miss the Gunners' last two outings.

Sanchez's absence was not felt against Aston Villa, where Arsenal picked up an easy 5-0 victory, but they were dealt a blow in the race for a top-four spot after losing 2-1 to Spurs - though they will soon be able to call on Sanchez once again.

"Sanchez will be back in the group and we don't have any injuries from Saturday," said Wenger ahead of Tuesday's match against Leicester City.

"We missed him on Saturday against Tottenham, we missed his physical strength and work rate."

Arsenal's derby defeat ended a run of five straight wins in all competitions, but Wenger rejected any talk of a crisis after such a hammer blow and has urged his side to bounce back and show their top-four class.

"We had a very strong run before Saturday so we just want to continue that. We need to respond strongly," the Frenchman continued.

"We have to deal with our performances. The criticism is always there. We have to focus on our performances. I don't take criticism personally. What I take personally is losing games."

"We have a good opportunity to show that we have the strength and quality to deal with pressure.

"You focus on how you can put your team in a position to respond well and quickly. This is a very important period."

Wenger also confirmed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who scored against Spurs at the Emirates Stadium, will be out of action for at least another two weeks, while he refused to set a timeline for Jack Wilshere's return.

Fabregas to make Chelsea return against Everton

    925592_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho expects Cesc Fabregas to return from a hamstring injury in time to play Everton at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

The Spain international has missed the Blues' last two matches, against Manchester City and Aston Villa, after coming off in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool earlier in February.

The former Barcelona midfielder was expected to come into contention for Saturday's trip to Villa Park, which Chelsea won 2-1, but Mourinho opted not to field him as a precautionary measure.

"I think Fabregas will play on Wednesday because against Villa the decision was to protect him," the Blues boss told reporters.

"I didn't want to risk two players at the same time because Willian had a minor problem from the previous game and was also a risk. To start two players who were a risk was a big gamble, so we gambled with just one.

"We didn't miss Cesc against Aston Villa because Ramires is back and he is back to his best, too. He was great against Liverpool, Manchester City and Aston Villa. He has a different profile of play to Cesc, but he gives a lot."

Fabregas has proved a hit at Stamford Bridge since signing in a big-money move from Barcelona ahead of the 2014-15, contributing 15 assists and two goals in 21 Premier League appearances.

Mourinho: Ivanovic one of Chelsea's best ever signings

    925132_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes that full-back Branislav Ivanovic is one of the club's best ever signings.

The 30-year-old scored the winner as the Premier League leaders downed Aston Villa 2-1 on Saturday to go seven points clear at the top, having already netted against Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final as well as two other goals this season.

Ivanovic's 2008 move from Lokomotiv Moscow is far from one of the biggest deals made under owner Roman Abramovich but Mourinho feels that he has made a huge contribution.

"Is he one of the club's best signings? I think so," the Portuguese told the press.

"He came immediately after I left after my first spell in charge and after that he made a fantastic contribution for this club. He is a competitive animal with a big heart.

"What really matters more is what we as a club feel for him and people like John Terry and Gary Cahill, guys that, without them, you cannot do anything.

"A team is an artist like Eden Hazard, it is a defender like Branislav. The mix and combination of talent makes a team.

"Every striker in the world would be proud to score that magnificent goal; it is an amazing goal. When he scores that goal and it is 3-0 or 4-0 it is a different feeling. He is a great guy; what he is doing for us is unbelievable."

During his seven years in London, Ivanovic has won the FA Cup three times as well as the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and Community Shield.

De Gea agent confirms Man Utd contract talks

    899832_heroa.jpg

David de Gea's agent, Jorge Mendes, has confirmed that he is in talks with Manchester United over a potential contract renewal for his client.

It had already been reported that United are ready to finally hammer out improved terms with the goalkeeper amid serious interest from Real Madrid, with his current deal set to expire in 2016.

Mendes has previously said that he expects De Gea to remain at Old Trafford and has now reiterated his belief that the 24-year-old will commit his future to the club, though he notes that nothing has been signed yet.

"It's not true that a deal has been done with Real Madrid," Mendes told Cadena Ser. "I'm negotiating his renewal at United. We've signed nothing.

"Players decide what they want. There are talks and it seems in principle that he wants to continue there but it's not signed yet."

De Gea has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season, appearing in every league game to date, and United are aware that any new contract would likely have to include a buyout clause and a hefty wage hike.
