Liverpool 3-2 Tottenham: Late Balotelli strike settles five-goal thriller

    932992_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool to earn the Reds a 3-2 win over Tottenham at Anfield on Tuesday.

Balotelli has endured a tough first season at Anfield, but picked an ideal moment to break his top-flight duck for the club with a well-taken late winner shortly after coming off the bench for Daniel Sturridge - who made his first Liverpool start since their 3-0 victory at Spurs in August.

Despite lacking match sharpness, Sturridge was dangerous throughout his 74 minutes on the pitch and was heavily involved in Liverpool's first two goals.

The England striker showcased strong hold up play to help set up Lazar Markovic for Liverpool's 15th-minute opener, which was quickly cancelled out by red-hot Spurs frontman Harry Kane.

Steven Gerrard restored Liverpool's advantage from the penalty spot eight minutes after half-time after Sturridge had gone down under an ill-advised challenge from Danny Rose.

Again Tottenham replied, though, as Moussa Dembele's close-range leveller just after the hour was allowed to stand despite Kane appearing to have strayed offside from Christian Eriksen's free-kick.

But there was one final twist in the tale as substitute Balotelli popped up seven minutes from time to smash home a low cross from fellow substitute Adam Lallana.

The win lifts Liverpool to within a point of Tottenham and just three points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal.

Liverpool's early pressure paid off as Markovic made the most of good hold-up play from Sturridge to find the bottom-right corner with a scuffed strike from the edge of the area.

But for all Liverpool's early dominance they were pegged back 11 minutes later as Kane continued his fine run of form.

Erik Lamela's pass squeaked through the Liverpool defence and into the path of the striker, who restored parity with a low shot under the legs of Simon Mignolet.

Tottenham struggled to build on that equaliser, and only the woodwork kept them on level terms as Sturridge struck the post with a clever back-heeled effort following brilliant work down the right from Jordon Ibe.

Liverpool remained in the ascendancy after the break and were duly rewarded when Gerrard converted from the spot.

The Reds skipper beat Lloris to the keeper's left-hand side after Sturridge had cleverly jinked his way into the box and gone down under Rose's challenge.

Lamela drew an acrobatic save from Mignolet as Spurs sought a quick response, which came in the 61st minute as Dembele bundled the ball in from two yards.

The midfielder turned home a pull back from Kane - who appeared to be marginally offside in the build-up - after Eriksen's curling free-kick had been kept out by Mignolet.

Liverpool looked to be running out of ideas in their search for a winner, but the introduction of Lallana and Balotelli proved the turning point as the England playmaker raced to the byline to pull back for the Italian to break his duck and settle an enthralling encounter.

Arsenal 2-1 Leicester City: Walcott on target for below-par Gunners

    932122_heroa.jpg

Goals from Laurent Koscielny and Theo Walcott gave Arsenal a narrow 2-1 win over a battling Leicester City side at the Emirates on Tuesday.

Despite Leicester starting promisingly, Arsenal led just short of the half-hour mark, as Koscielny was afforded too much space from a corner and was allowed to slot home his third goal of the season.

Walcott - one of three Arsenal changes from their north London derby defeat to Tottenham - made it two before the break as he seized on Mark Schwarzer's parry before Kramaric gave the visitors brief hope.

However, Arsene Wenger's men were not to be denied a return to winning ways as they moved back into the top four, while Leicester's loss was made worse by victories for fellow strugglers Hull City and QPR.

Leicester began well with Riyad Mahrez their bright spark early on. The Algerian proved a menace for both Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin before Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla began to pull the strings for Arsenal, allowing the hosts to gain a foothold in the game.

Wenger’s men got their reward courtesy of Koscielny, as the France international lost marker Wes Morgan with ease and finished Ozil's corner.

Koscielny’s defensive partner, Per Mertesacker, was then required to clear a dangerous cross from Paul Konchesky eight minutes before the interval with Pearson’s side again demonstrating some attacking threat of their own.

However, despite their forward promise, Leicester were again let down by a defensive mishap four minutes before the break when Schwarzer parried Ozil's strike into the path of Walcott, who made no mistake with the follow-up.

Leicester again looked lively going forward early in the second half and they were rewarded when some sloppy Arsenal defending allowed Mahrez to cross for Kramaric, who fired home his first goal since moving from Rijeka.

Wenger opted to replace Alexis Sanchez with Olivier Giroud following the goal and, with the visitors given renewed hope, Mahrez soon curled an effort marginally wide before Pearson introduced Leonardo Ulloa up front.

While Ulloa's presence made an impact, it proved too little, too late for Nigel Pearson and Leicester.

Meanwhile, Wenger's main frustration, other than a nervy second-half display, will be an apparent injury suffered by Aaron Ramsey - who lasted just nine minutes after coming off the bench.

Sunderland 0-2 QPR: Hoops pick up first away win

    932182_heroa.jpg

QPR picked up their first away points of the season and ended a run of 11 consecutive Premier League defeats on the road thanks to a spirited 2-0 win at Sunderland on Tuesday.

Despite the absence of top-scorer Charlie Austin with a bruised foot, a fine first-half performance sent QPR well on their way to victory as their dismal run finally came to end in their first away match since Harry Redknapp's resignation.

Chris Ramsey and Kevin Bond continued their spell in temporary charge of Rangers and the away side started well, taking the lead through Leroy Fer after 17 minutes.

Sunderland almost equalised eight minutes before the break when Connor Wickham saw his header knocked onto the crossbar, but they were made to pay for that miss on the stroke of half-time when Bobby Zamora – Austin's deputy – netted in spectacular fashion following effective wing play by the impressive Matt Phillips.

Sunderland produced some improvement in the second half, but they failed to find a way past the excellent Robert Green.

Rangers made six changes from the side that lost 1-0 at home to Southampton on Saturday and appeared invigorated as they pushed forward in numbers early on.

It was the hosts who fashioned the first opportunity, though, as Patrick van Aanholt latched on to Anthony Reveillere's deep cross and smashed a volley well over.

Sunderland were made to regret that miss just two minutes later, as Fer met Phillips' exquisite cross with a powerful header to break the deadlock.

QPR went agonisingly close to doubling their advantage in the 31st minute, but Fer fired against the post from the edge of the area following a perfect cut-back by the lively Phillips.

Sunderland did eventually awaken as an attacking threat.

First, Jermain Defoe spurned a glorious chance as he knocked Jordi Gomez's teasing cross over from eight yards, before Wickham – starting in place of Danny Graham – saw his 37th-minute header palmed onto the crossbar by Green.

But QPR again capitalised on those let-offs when Zamora smashed Phillips' delivery into the top-right corner with an unstoppable half-volley from 18 yards, giving Sunderland a mountain to climb.

Gus Poyet introduced the tricky Ricky Alvarez at half-time and Sunderland started to enjoy a little more possession in the QPR half.

But they found themselves up against a goalkeeper in form, as Green first denied Defoe from point-blank range with 23 minutes to go, before then tipping an Alvarez effort around the post shortly afterwards.

Sunderland received the boost of seeing tormentor-in-chief Fer withdrawn due to injury 15 minutes from time and they put QPR under intense pressure during the final stages, with Alvarez proving a nuisance.

But the visitors did well to take the sting out of any late attacks as they held on to move out of the relegation zone.

Van Gaal denies FA misconduct charge

    925322_heroa.jpg

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has denied his Football Association misconduct charge and requested a personal hearing.

The Dutch coach was initially charged after suggesting that the referee was against his side in the 0-0 draw with Cambridge in the FA Cup fourth round.

Van Gaal later revealed that he would contest the charge and the FA have now confirmed that, after the Premier League club were granted a 24-hour extension, he has followed that through and also requested a personal hearing.

A statement from the FA read: "Louis Van Gaal denies FA misconduct charge in relation to media comments and requests personal hearing, date to be confirmed.

"The Manchester United manager was charged following the FA Cup tie against Cambridge United on 23 January 2015. It is alleged his comments constitute improper conduct in that they allege and/or imply bias on the part of the match referee and/or bring the game into disrepute."

    'Dortmund have talked too much'

    878002_heroa.jpg

Jakub Blaszczykowski says Borussia Dortmund have done too much talking and failed to back up their comments on the field this season.

A 3-0 victory over Freiburg saw BVB climb off the bottom of the Bundesliga table as they picked up just their fifth league win of the campaign on Saturday.

Last week also witnessed remarkable scenes in the aftermath of Dortmund's 1-0 defeat at home to Augsburg, where several players approached supporters in the stands to apologise for the display.

Blaszczykowski believes the playing squad have made too many false promises of an upturn in performances and said they must now do their talking on the pitch.

"I think we've talked enough," he told the club's official website. "Now we need to act on the field. At the moment we are simply not playing our normal game. No matter what we do, everything is going wrong.

"We have to try and play our own game, because it is only then that we can show our qualities completely. We have good moments on the pitch but they're outnumbered by the number of mistakes we make.

"Anyway, I think we've done enough talking. I would rather we now started to show something on the field."

The Poland international has only just returned from a lengthy lay-off after suffering a rupture of his anterior cruciate ligament in September, which was followed by a hamstring setback over Christmas.

"Even under heavy load my knee showed no reaction, I had no more pain. The only thing I am missing now is match practice. Training is very different to a game. Only after I've played many games will I get all my confidence back.

"But I won't go into a tackle with anything less than 100 per cent, otherwise I wouldn't be the same player. When I do something, I do it 100%."

Man City not in crisis - Pellegrini

    880512_heroa.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has dismissed talk of a crisis ahead of Wednesday's trip to Stoke City and insists he is not feeling under pressure.

The Premier League champions are without a win in the league since New Year's Day and had to rely on a stoppage-time James Milner free-kick to snatch a draw at home to Hull City at the weekend.

However, Pellegrini stressed that his side are only one point worse off this season than compared to their respective points tally last term, when they won the league, and maintains that there is no crisis at the club.

"I never feel pressure," said Pellegrini at his pre-match press conference.

"It has been the same the last two years, the only pressure is my own pressure, the pressure I make on myself when I don’t think the team is playing well.

"We are in a normal position, we’re involved in the Champions League, if we win tomorrow I think we are just one point less than last season.

"We have a lot more important things to think about than pressure. I don’t feel any pressure from inside the club or from outside."

City can look forward to a 10-day break after their clash with Stoke, having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Middlesbrough in the fourth round, but Pellegrini is expecting a tough test.

"We have 10 days after this but it's important to think game by game," he continued. "We have to win against a strong team.

"They are a very good team. Especially playing at the Britannia – last season we just won 1-0 at home and drew away.

"The whole squad is fit. We are going to go and try to win three points as we always do away from home."

Ronaldo deserves to party - Mascherano

    382188_heroa.jpg

Javier Mascherano says Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to celebrate his 30th birthday even in the aftermath of Real Madrid's shock 4-0 defeat to city rivals Atletico.

Images of Ronaldo partying with a number of his Madrid team-mates to mark his personal milestone emerged on the internet just hours after the loss, causing widespread uproar amongst the club's supporters.

The forward's agent Jorge Mendes has since come out in support of his client, while Portugal legend and Fifa candidate Luis Figo has also offered him his backing.

And Ronaldo has now received further endorsement of his actions from an unlikely source, with Barcelona midfielder Mascherano advising the public to understand that sportsmen also have personal lives.

He told RAC 1: "Everyone lives as he likes and I am not somebody who will tell somebody else how they should live their life.

"We are people, human beings. Often people forget that beyond being professionals and beyond being in front of a camera, we have personal lives as well and can live as we choose.

"Let's not forget that we are people and we have the right to live our life in the private sphere and people need to understand that."

Mascherano was talking after receiving the Leadership Ability award at Mundo Deportivo's annual awards ceremony on Monday night.

Mourinho on Lukaku: Chelsea don't sell garbage

    884722_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho says Romelu Lukaku is proof Chelsea "don't sell garbage" and believes the striker has already justified the €38 million Everton paid the Blues for his services in the summer.

Lukaku joined the Toffees on a permanent deal after becoming disillusioned by a lack of first-team opportunities with the Blues despite an impressive loan spell at Goodison Park last season.

The Belgian has since struggled, scoring just 10 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions, but Mourinho insists no one at Chelsea is in any doubt as to his talent.

“No, he doesn’t have a point to prove,” he told reporters when asked about Lukaku. “I think he proves every weekend that he's a good player.

“Nobody has doubts at Chelsea that he's a good player. He has nothing to prove to us. He is a difficult opponent. You have to know that. We know that better than anyone.

“We know [Andre] Schurrle is a good player. [Kevin] De Bruyne is a good player. [Juan] Mata is a good player. But that's football, that's life, that's the market.

“The players' wishes sometimes to be in clubs where they become clearly the first options. That's football, that's life.”

Chelsea have made well over €135m from the sales of Mata, De Bruyne, Lukaku, Schurrle and David Luiz in the past three transfer windows, but Mourinho is adamant all of the fees were justified.

“We don't sell garbage. We sell top players,” he added.

“Mata: world champion. Schurrle: world champion. Lukaku: one of the best young strikers, fantastic prospect. De Bruyne: one of the best young players, also. Both playing for a very important national team, probably one of the best national teams for the next decade.

“We sell top players and we get top fees. If we didn't get top fees, we wouldn't sell them because we want to keep them.”

I still trust Cavani, insists Blanc

    842652_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc is adamant he still trusts Edinson Cavani, despite the recent feud between the pair and the striker's current woes in front of goal.

Cavani and team-mate Ezequiel Lavezzi returned from the winter break four days late in January, prompting Blanc to issue both players with a two-match ban.

Both men have since returned to the starting XI, but the Uruguay striker has continued to struggle for consistency in front of goal, finding the net just twice in his last 10 games.

One particular below-par performance in PSG's 1-0 win over Rennes in Ligue 1 on January 30 saw the former France boss label Cavani's display "insufficient".

Blanc insists, however, that his patience is not wearing thin with a player who cost €74 million when he joined the club from Napoli in 2013.

"We have to maintain our trust in him," the 49-year-old said on Tuesday. "I am sure he will score goals, even when it seems a little complicated.

"We don't say 'you are bad, you go out'. This is not the best way to restore confidence.

"Sometimes you have to do it for results, but you have to be careful, because the target is not losing the player mentally when he has a big part to play until the end of the season."

Thiago Motta is another member of Blanc's squad whose displays have come under scrutiny in recent months, with the Brazilian a shadow of the player who shone as PSG won Ligue 1 last season.

"I am very pleased with Thiago Motta, I find you are very severe with him," the former France boss added. "Yes, he had a difficult time, it is not no secret, we were all aware that he had problems, but we have maintained our trust while he was in trouble.

"Since January, I am happy with his games. I saw his stats against Lyon, but it is close, very close to what he did last year in the big games in terms of technicality. He is a player who likes big games and he will perform. I will look after him."

I'll discuss Dani Alves future in the summer - Luis Enrique

    451623_heroa.jpg

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique is happy to wait until the end of the season to discuss the future of right-back Dani Alves, despite it increasing the possibility of the player walking away for free in June.

The defender has less than six months left on his current deal and even though Barca have been hit with a transfer ban which prevents them from signing players in 2015, the club have yet to offer the Brazilian a new contract.

That perceived lack of interest in extending Alves' seven-year stay at Camp Nou prompted his agent Dinorah Santana to reveal last week she would begin looking for a new club for her client.

Luis Enrique remained non-committal over the prospect of the 31-year-old remaining in Catalonia but said he plans on sitting down with the player at the end of the season.

"I do not speak of these situations," he said at Tuesday's press conference. "This benefits both parties. Everyone should be calm and talk at the end of the season, not now."

Barcelona face Villarreal at Camp Nou in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Wednesday on the back of a positive weekend for the club in La Liga.

Real Madrid's shock 4-0 defeat at the hands of Atletico, allied with the Blaugrana's 5-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao, saw them cut the gap between themselves and leaders Madrid to just a single point.

Equally uplifting was the sight of Luis Suarez finding the back of the net at San Mames, which brought to an end a five-game goal drought.

"I don't know if the goal has boosted his confidence," Luis Enrique added. "We created many chances and we are happy with his performance. It's all very positive for his first year at the club." Barca have won their last nine games in all competitions, and Luis Enrique is pleased with the improvement.

“We have seen different versions of the team as the season has progressed, but what a manager is always hoping is for his team to get better and better,” he said.

“When the results are positive, then the team’s confidence and morale are always going to be higher as well. I like the way the players react when they go behind in a match. They have the resources and they go into each challenge as if was their last. It’s always easier to win games when you have such top quality players as these in your squad. They know they can beat anyone.

“We like to control matches, but the circumstances don’t always allow that. But we never sit back on a lead. We keep going out in search of ways to create damage and make use of any spaces that teams leave open at the back.”

The mood at the club is markedly different now to the start of the year when the former Roma boss was reportedly on the verge of the sack due to indifferent form and a row with star man Lionel Messi.

“I have never felt that my job has been on the line since I’ve been manager at this club,” he added. “You are always going to lose some games, that’s only normal in any football season.

“Managers don’t get to enjoy matches. Once one is over, you’re already thinking about the next. For a manager, the happiness doesn’t come until the season has ended and you have achieved your targets.”

    Figo defends Ronaldo party

    242402_heroa.jpg

Portugal legend Luis Figo has leapt to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo following the furore surrounding his decision to throw a 30th birthday party after Real Madrid's 4-0 defeat at the hands of city rivals Atletico.

Ronaldo had already planned to celebrate the milestone on Saturday evening, but has been criticised by supporters and sections of the media who have questioned his professionalism.

However, Figo, who is one of four candidates challenging Fifa president Sepp Blatter to become head of the game's governing body, hit back at critics of his compatriot on Twitter.

He said: "Anyone who doubts Cristiano Ronaldo's passion for professionalism and that of Real Madrid's is completely without knowledge of their history and character."

Figo's words of support come after Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, offered his backing to his client on Monday, claiming the player's friends and family had already arrived in Madrid prior to the game.

Photos of the party surfaced on the internet, with the images showing Madrid team-mates Fabio Coentrao, Marcelo, Keylor Navas, James Rodriguez and Luka Modric among 150 revellers at an exclusive venue situated in the outskirts of Madrid.

McNair signs new Manchester United contract

    466075_heroa.jpg

Paddy McNair has signed a new contract with Manchester United that will run until June 2017 and has the option of a further year.

The 19-year-old made his first-team debut under Louis van Gaal this season and has gone on to make 12 appearances in all competitions.

    p4uOvWo.jpg

"To make my debut for this great club earlier this season was a dream come true," McNair told the club's official website.

"I'm pleased to have signed a new contract. I have come through the academy here and I feel I am improving my game all the time with the help of the manager, the coaching staff and my team-mates."

Van Gaal was forced to throw McNair in at the deep end in September after his defensive options were severely limited due to multiple injuries but the United manager insists the centre-back can become a "top player".

"Paddy has risen through the ranks to become an integral part of the first team squad," said the Dutchman.

"He has all the attributes to develop into a top player. Promoting youth players is very important both to myself and to the club and I am delighted Paddy has signed a new contract."

    Reus signs new Dortmund deal

    900402_heroa.jpg

Marco Reus has signed a fresh deal with Borussia Dortmund that will keep him contracted to the club until 2019.

The versatile attacker's previous deal - which contained a limited fee release clause of €25 million - was due to expire in June 2017 and several clubs were keeping a close eye on Reus' situation at BVB, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Manchester United.

However, the 25-year-old has now ended all speculation about his future by inking a two-year extension with the club and there is no release clause in the new deal.
"We never let all the rumours about a transfer distract us and we always kept believing that this extraordinary player would decide in favour of a future at BVB," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said on Reus' renewal."Marco can mark an era in Dortmund, like Uwe Seeler at Hamburg and Steven Gerrard at Liverpool in the past.

"The fact that Marco has decided to sign a new deal with BVB in such difficult times is further proof that he identifies himself with this club, something we are very proud of."Sporting director Michael Zorc, meanwhile, was equally delighted with Reus' decision to stay put, despite interest from some of the strongest sides in Europe.

"Marco Reus could have joined any big club in the world. His decision shows that his heart beats for his hometown and his boyhood club. He is a key player for Dortmund's future."Reus came through the ranks of the Dortmund youth academy and even though he enjoyed spells with Rot Weiss Ahlen and Borussia Monchengladbach before returning to Dortmund, he was quick to stress that BVB will always be his club.

"I am very happy with my decision to stay at BVB. Dortmund is my hometown and Borussia is the club of my heart.

"I am looking forward to a successful future with this team and with the fans behind us. There's still a lot of work to do and I want to do my bit."The attacker has scored four goals in 10 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, missing a number of games due to injury.

De Bruyne hit with €20k fine over ball boy row

    914842_heroa.jpg

Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been handed a €20,000 fine for insulting a ball boy in his side's 1-1 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Belgium international lost his temper as Wolfsburg were a goal down in last week's encounter and shouted "'Give me the ball, you motherf***er." towards the 15-year-old ball boy.

De Bruyne has since apologised to the ball boy in question and has offered him a signed Wolfsburg jersey, yet this has not stopped the German Football Federation (DFB) from handing out a punishment."The sport court of the DFB has handed down a €20,000 fine for Kevin de Bruyne," a statement on the club's official website reads.

"The penalty was served in relation to an incident of unsportsmanlike conduct during the game against Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 19."Kevin de Bruyne and VfL Wolfsburg have accepted the verdict."

The 23-year-old has been in sublime form for the Bundesliga outfit so far this term, helping them to second place in the table with eight goals in 11 assists in 20 Bundesliga appearances.

Zabaleta: Man City need Aguero firing again

    929442_heroa.jpg

Manchester City need Sergio Aguero to end a run of five games without a goal, says Pablo Zabaleta.

The striker has failed to score in any of his five matches since returning from a knee injury, having previouly netted 16 times in 14 appearances, while City's Premier League title defence has weakened in the process, falling seven points behind Chelsea.

Aguero threatened in his side's 1-1 home draw with Hull City on Saturday and earned the foul that led to James Milner's late equaliser, leading his compatriot to argue that he is not far from getting back to firing on all cylinders.

"He made a few good runs in the last 20 minutes," Zabaleta told the Manchester Evening News of Aguero's performance against Hull.

"We need Sergio to come back to his best like he was in November, December when he was doing everything for the team - scoring goals, working hard for the team - but, after being injured for a long time, for some players it is difficult to come back to his best, in terms of fitness.

"It is the same thing with Edin Dzeko. We know they are really important players for the team. They are the strikers. We need them in the best form because the team always needs the best players in very good form during the whole season if you want to win something.

"Last season we had that with Alvaro Negredo and Kun doing really well for most of the season, then Edin Dzeko being fantastic for the last three or four months. That is what you need to be a better team.

"I am sure Sergio will come back to his best," the Argentina international continued.

"It is about confidence as well. The strikers need to feel they are in a good moment. Scoring goals is the best thing for them and I am sure that, as soon as Sergio scores one goal, then he will again be one of the best strikers in the league."

Wenger mocks Mourinho over FFP comments

    929512_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has laughed off Jose Mourinho's suggestion that Manchester City should be deducted points for abusing Financial Fair Play regulations.

The Chelsea boss took aim at the Premier League champions on Friday, claiming they have flouted Uefa's rules but Wenger has hinted the Blues also belong in that category.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Frenchman smiled when asked if he believed clubs should suffer points deductions for failing to comply with FFP regulations, as Mourinho suggested.

He replied: "I think we have a good sense of humour here.

"Look, the financial fair play rules have to be respected by everybody and if one club has always respected the financial fair play - and you can underline 'always' - it's Arsenal, then we do not have to talk about that."

City have been hit hardest this season, having their Champions League squad reduced from 25 players to 21 for financial mismanagement, and Manuel Pellegrini continued to push the limit, signing Wilfried Bony for approximately €35 million.

And Wenger feels that there is still too much confusion surrounding the finer details of FFP, adding: "It depends what you call financial fair play, as that notion has changed, you know.

"Is it is just your income created by the gates? Is it the gates and commercial? Then you can already start to be creative.

"Is it only the gates and the television? Is it naming rights as well? It is not clear to people what financial fair play means; the rules are very complicated. The Premier League rules and European rules are different already. You have to be aligned so everybody knows exactly what it means.

"We are a popular sport so you want clear and simple rules for everybody to understand. If I ask 10 people in the street today and if you ask me, and I am in the job, I don't have a clear idea anymore of what it means. I would like the rules to be clear and that everybody respects them."

Camp Nou Clasico to be played on March 22

    529571_heroa.jpg

The next Clasico clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid will be played on March 22, Spain's Professional Football League (LFP) has confirmed.Schedules for the 28th round of La Liga were revealed earlier on Tuesday, with Luis Enrique's side set to host Carlo Ancelotti's men on the third weekend of March in what is only the second Clasico of the season.

The game takes place on a Sunday evening at 21:00 CET and comes just four days after Barca's Champions League last-16 second-leg game against Manchester City.Madrid, meanwhile, can prepare for the famous fixture without midweek distractions as they are in action against Schalke the previous week.

Ancelotti's side currently lead La Liga, but saw their advantage over Barca cut to just a point after their 4-0 defeat to Atletico in the Madrid derby on Saturday and the Catalans' 5-2 win at Athletic Bilbao the following day.

Sherwood to be confirmed as new QPR boss

    404684_heroa.jpg

Tim Sherwood has agreed to take charge of Queens Park Rangers, with official confirmation due in the next 48 hours.

Sherwood was the hot favourite to step into the role as soon as Harry Redknapp resigned last Tuesday, just a day after the close of the transfer window.

Derby County boss Steve McClaren and Real Madrid assistant Paul Clement were also linked with the post but quickly ruled themselves out, while back in November Sherwood was being lined up should Redknapp have been sacked earlier in the season.

Sherwood replaced Andre Villas-Boas as Tottenham manager in December 2013 but was himself replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

He has been linked with a number of jobs in the interim and came close to taking over at West Brom last summer, before Alan Irvine, since sacked, was given the job.

Although the 46-year-old had been expected to have already been confirmed as the new manager at QPR, all parties are now ready to finalise the appointment after a series of talks over the past few days.
