Dani Alves' agent blasts Barcelona over contract talks

    899622_heroa.jpg

Dani Alves' agent, Dinorah Santa Ana, has blasted Barcelona, saying the right-back is "sad" that the club have not made any contact over a new deal.

The 31-year-old's existing deal runs out at the end of the season and a number of reports suggested he was on the verge of committing for another year. However, the player's representative has made it clear Barcelona have yet to offer him a new deal, much to Dani Alves' disappointment.

"It is not true that Barcelona have offered Dani Alves a new one-year deal," Dinorah told COPE.

"Disappointed is not the right word, but we are very sad with Barcelona's attitude. There has not even been a call and nor has there been contact at any moment."We are more sad than disappointed. We expected a call from the club by now.

Dani Alves is a starter, plays nearly every game and gets along well with Luis Enrique."We are listening to offers from other clubs. There have been some offers, all from teams outside Spain.

"He has five or six more years in him at the highest level. He is very professional."
The right-back has made 26 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona so far this term.

Modric edging closer to Real Madrid return

    976222_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid have confirmed that Croatia midfielder Luka Modric has returned to training following a thigh injury.

The Croatia international has not played for the Santiago Bernabeu side since November after picking up the problem on international duty against Italy. The 29-year-old is closing in on a return, though, after joining in a training session with other players who did not start in the club's 2-0 Champions League win over Schalke on Wednesday.

Modric used the club's indoor facilities as the likes of James Rodriguez, Sergio Ramos, Sami Khedira and Fabio Coentrao also continued their rehabilitation from injuries. The ex-Tottenham midfielder did not take part in a short practice match at the end of training, however, preferring to sit out.

Modric moved to Real Madrid from White Hart Lane in 2012 and quickly established himself as a first-team regular. He has made 17 appearances for the club in all competitions this season, scoring one goal.

Scholes: Chelsea a long way from being a great team

    965802_heroa.jpg

Despite their seven point lead at the top of the Premier League, Chelsea are a long way off of becoming a "great team", according to Paul Scholes.

The former Manchester United midfielder concedes that the Blues could be considered among the best when they won back-to-back Premier League titles during Jose Mourinho's first spell in charge, but not now.

Writing in The Independent, Scholes penned: "Working as one of the ITV pundits on Tuesday night I was surprised to hear Jose Mourinho talking about Chelsea as a 'great team'.

"Great teams have to win trophies first, which means that Chelsea have had a great team when they won back-to-back league titles but they are still a long way off it now."

Mourinho was talking ahead of Tuesday's Champions League Champions League last-16 first-leg clash with Paris Saint-Germain, which ended in a 1-1 draw at Parc des Princes.

Scholes was not overly impressed by the English side and has backed the Ligue 1 champions to cause a potential shock at Stamford Bridge in the second leg.

Assessing the game, Scholes wrote: "I recognise that Paris Saint-Germain have an excellent home record in Europe. Even so, I expected Chelsea to create more chances against them this week.

"They had one attempt on goal, Branislav Ivanovic’s header that went in. Barcelona or Real Madrid might not have beaten PSG but they would have had more than one shot on goal.

"I wouldn’t rule PSG out for the second leg, especially if Zlatan Ibrahimovic decides he fancies it. I think they will score at least one at Stamford Bridge."

Manchester City 5-0 Newcastle: Silva sparkles in five star performance

    986122_heroa.jpg

Manchester City took full advantage of a surprise slip-up from Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 5-0 thrashing of a woeful Newcastle United on Saturday.

The reigning champions received a welcome boost prior to kick-off at the Etihad Stadium as Chelsea gave up a lead to draw 1-1 at home to lowly Burnley.

Vurnon Anita soon provided a further lift to City, clumsily conceding a penalty inside 30 seconds to hand Sergio Aguero the chance to open the scoring from the spot, and Newcastle's defensive shortcomings were ruthlessly exposed thereafter, as Manuel Pellegrini's men - with the influential Yaya Toure back in their ranks - ran riot.

Samir Nasri and Edin Dzeko added further goals in the opening quarter of the game, while David Silva scored twice in quick succession to make it 5-0 after just 53 minutes.

That gave Pellegrini the luxury of handing Aguero and Silva an early rest ahead of Tuesday's Champions League tie with Barcelona, with Wilfried Bony introduced off the bench for his debut.

The hosts coasted through the remainder of the contest, against a side beaten 4-0 on their previous two league visits to the Etihad, and they now sit five points behind Chelsea with 12 rounds of matches remaining.

Toure and Bony - a January arrival from Swansea City - were both available following their Africa Cup of Nations success with the Ivory Coast, but James Milner missed out through injury.

The only change to Newcastle's team saw Remy Cabella replaced by Anita and the Dutch midfielder was quick to mark his recall with a costly error, as he mis-controlled a pass from Mike Williamson before upending Dzeko in the box.

Aguero calmly converted the resulting penalty, passing the ball to Tim Krul's left with the goalkeeper completely wrong-footed, and City were soon in complete control.

Although Daryl Janmaat went close with a fine effort from distance for Newcastle, the visitors fell further behind on 12 minutes when a pass from Dzeko deflected into the path of Nasri, who took a touch around a defender and fired a shot high into the net.

City pulled further clear nine minutes later with a third goal that oozed class. A sublime ball over the top from Silva picked out Dzeko and the striker controlled expertly with his chest before beating Krul with a half-volley.

Newcastle, who replaced Anita with Mehdi Abeid at the start of the second half, almost pulled a goal back but Joe Hart made a fine one-handed stop to keep out a powerful volley from Papiss Cisse that took a deflection off Vincent Kompany.

Any hope of an unlikely fightback was snuffed out in the 51st minute, however, as Aguero charged infield from the left and found Nasri, who squared a pass for the unmarked Silva to finish with typical style.

The home fans had barely finished celebrating by the time Silva struck again with a sweeping first-time shot after Aguero had chested down a lofted pass from Toure.

Silva and Aguero were duly withdrawn and Bony was only denied a debut goal by Krul's outstretched left leg as City eased through the closing stages, completing the ideal preparation for Barca's visit on Tuesday when a sterner test will surely await.

Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 Toulouse: Rabiot double sends Parisiens top

    985702_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain moved to the top of Ligue 1 with a 3-1 win over Toulouse, which saw Adrien Rabiot score twice in a man-of-the-match display.

Despite missing a host of key names, PSG banished the demons of last weekend's 2-2 draw, when they squandered a 2-0 lead, to claim a vital three points.Rabiot scored either side of half-time for the hosts, both following good work from Javier Pastore.

Alain Casanova started with top scorer Wissam Ben Yedder on the bench, but the striker came on before half-time and pulled one back three minutes after Rabiot's second.

PSG responded in positive fashion and Thiago Silva added a third 16 minutes from time to send the champions top, at least until their rivals are in action on Sunday.
The build-up to this match had been dominated by Blanc's shortage of options, with the manager claiming to have only 13 outfield players to pick from.It appeared his side were low on ideas too, until Pastore injected some much-needed pace into PSG's attack to create the opener in the 27th minute.

The Argentinian skipped away from a couple of challenges in midfield before spreading the ball wide and continuing his run to collect and square for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to backheel into the path of Rabiot. The midfielder then curled a wonderful left-footed shot into the far corner from 20 yards with his team's first effort on target. It should have been quickly followed by a second, but Silva steered his downward header wide when left unmarked from a corner two minutes later.

Toulouse almost levelled with their first meaningful attack four minutes before half-time, but Salvatore Sirigu did well to turn Abel Aguilar's header behind following a flowing counter-attack.Casanova's side were denied the chance to build on a strong finish to the first half as Rabiot scored his second on 48 minutes.

Again Pastore was the creator, wriggling out of a hole on the right-hand side before driving into the box to drill a low ball across for Rabiot to force over the line from a yard out.The two-goal cushion lasted just three minutes as Ben Yedder profited from slack defending to nod in from close range - taking his season tally to eight.

Edinson Cavani went close to adding a third in the 58th minute, but Silva made no such mistake in the 74th, as he flicked Jean-Christophe Bahebeck's whipped free-kick past Ali Ahamada to settle PSG nerves.

Hull City 2-1 QPR: N'Doye nets vital late winner

    932292_heroa.jpg

Dame N'Doye marked his 30th birthday with a last-minute goal as Hull City claimed a vital 2-1 win over fellow Premier League strugglers QPR on Saturday.

A nervy affair was brought to life after 16 minutes when a defensive error allowed Nikica Jelavic to fire home for the hosts, before QPR captain Joey Barton received a red card for lashing out at Tom Huddlestone.

Despite Hull's numerical advantage, Charlie Austin, who failed a medical at the KC Stadium back in 2013, was on hand to restore parity just before half-time, flicking home a teasing cross from Matt Phillips.

A second half largely devoid of quality seemed set to ensure QPR claimed an unlikely point, before N'Doye fired home at the death to earn his side a second consecutive league win.

It is the first time Hull, who are now up to 15th, have sealed back-to-back league victories since September 2013, handing a massive boost to boss Steve Bruce.

QPR, meanwhile, are above the relegation zone on goal difference alone ahead of home games against Arsenal and Tottenham.

Both teams came into the match on the back of morale-boosting 2-0 victories before the FA Cup weekend, but it was nevertheless a cagey opening 10 minutes at the KC Stadium.

That all changed when Hull, unchanged from their win over Aston Villa, were gifted a breakthrough.

A high ball into the box from Huddlestone was poorly cleared by the head of Steven Caulker, allowing Jelavic to lash a shot home with aplomb.

QPR's Darnell Furlong nearly restored parity four minutes later, but the 19-year-old was denied a goal on his senior debut when his header was superbly tipped over by Allan McGregor.

Jake Livermore then fired over the crossbar, before Furlong - son of former QPR striker Paul - found himself at the centre of the action again after 32 minutes. His late challenge on David Meyler sparked a fracas, eventually resulting in QPR captain Barton being shown a red card for an apparent punch on Huddlestone.

An eventful first half took another twist six minutes before half-time, when Austin rose highest to flick home an unlikely equaliser following Phillips' fine cross.

Huddlestone should have put his side back in front on the stroke of the interval, but rifled a shot just wide.

The hosts introduced Gaston Ramirez just after half-time in an attempt to make their numerical advantage count, but could not find another breakthrough.

A fragmented display posed few problems for the QPR defence for much of the second half, and goalkeeper Rob Green was largely untroubled.

QPR looked to have done enough to secure a draw, but N'Doye sealed the win in the last minute of the game, first forcing a superb save from Green with a powered header, before popping up again just seconds later to convert a Robbie Brady cross.

Aston Villa 1–2 Stoke City: Sherwood starts with defeat after late Moses penalty

    984982_heroa.jpg

A stoppage-time penalty from Victor Moses spoiled Tim Sherwood's first match in charge of Aston Villa as Stoke City earned a 2-1 victory in Saturday's Premier League match.

Sherwood saw his side remain in the bottom three after Ron Vlaar hauled down Moses, with the forward coolly converting from 12 yards after the defender had seen red.

Scott Sinclair was able to take one of the few chances the home side created as he headed in his first top-flight goal since August 2012 after 20 minutes, but Stoke restored parity before the break.

Mame Biram Diouf met Stephen Ireland's cross seven yards from goal and placed his header past Brad Guzan on the goalkeeper's 100th successive league start.

A second half devoid of quality and chances failed to lift the atmosphere inside Villa Park, with Stoke slightly edging proceedings before Moses' winner.

Villa drop a place in the table after the defeat, while Stoke remain mid-table.

Despite the presence of their new manager Villa made a cautious start, with Stoke creating the opening effort on goal in the 16th minute, Ireland – on his Stoke return – meeting Marc Wilson's cross but failing to stretch Guzan.

The deadlock was broken four minutes later as Sinclair netted the opening goal, the on-loan forward getting in between two defenders to head home Fabian Delph's cross.

Villa enjoyed a spell of dominance after that as Stoke's defence began to wobble, but they failed to capitalise and slowly the visitors came back into it, with Moses testing Guzan from the edge of the area.

Kieran Richardson – one of four Villa changes – saw his afternoon come to a premature end three minutes before the break due to injury, and it cost the hosts as his replacement Aly Cissokho failed to stop an Ireland cross in the final minute of the half.

The former Villa man produced a precise delivery that Diouf rose to head in under pressure from Vlaar and Ciaran Clark.

Neither side was able to find any rhythm after the restart, which resulted in a scrappy affair, fouls aplenty and a couple of yellow cards from referee Roger East.

Stoke posed more of a threat on the counter-attack with the pace of Diouf and Moses, while Villa introduced Andreas Weimann to spark them into life.

The Austrian's introduction failed to have the desired reaction, though, and although Villa were grateful to Guzan's late save to deny Jonathan Walters' back-post volley they could not hold onto the point.

A mistake by Vlaar gave Moses a run on goal, the Netherlands international brought him down and the Stoke man ensured rubbed salt in the wounds of a Villa side now winless in 11 league games.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal: Giroud’s 50th Gunners goal seals three points

    985412_heroa.jpg

Arsenal moved into third in the Premier League as they saw off Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Gunners took an early lead through Santi Cazorla as the Spain midfielder slotted home from the penalty spot after Danny Welbeck was felled in the area.

And Olivier Giroud doubled the lead on the verge of half-time as he fired in his 50th goal for Arsene Wenger's side after Julian Speroni could only parry an effort from Welbeck.

Glen Murray pulled one back in stoppage time, but the visitors held on for the three points.

Arsenal - who were able to name Jack Wilshere in the squad for the first time since November after injury - were on the back foot early on as Palace threatened down the right through Wilfried Zaha.

They pressed Arsenal high up the pitch but sloppy play from Premier League debutant Pape Souare gifted the visitors an opportunity to lead.

Referee Mark Clattenburg felt the foul on Welbeck took place inside the box and, after the official had pointed to the spot, Cazorla expertly slotted home.

It proved the only real chance of the opening 20 minutes, with Alexis Sanchez almost forcing an opportunity soon afterwards as he pressured Scott Dann into losing possession, only for Speroni to come out and clear.

Palace, for all their promising spells of possession, struggled to test goalkeeper David Ospina and his defence before Arsenal made the most of their threat on the break when Giroud doubled their advantage.

A clever pass from Francis Coquelin found Welbeck and, when the England international's effort was saved, Giroud reacted quickest to register his 50th Arsenal goal in first-half stoppage time.

Mesut Ozil had Speroni worried with a looping header that flew over the crossbar early in the second half but, like in the first period, the game continued to see Palace have spells of possession against Arsenal's threat on the counter.

In a bid to get back in the game, home boss Alan Pardew introduced Yannick Bolasie from the bench for his 100th Palace appearance but, alongside the likes of Zaha, Jason Puncheon and Dwight Gayle, he failed to unlock the Arsenal defence.

Gayle could only angle Souare's header over the crossbar with 20 minutes left before Puncheon flashed a free-kick wide.

Substitute Murray - on as a 79th-minute replacement for Gayle - then almost single-handedly gained Palace a point, as he first poked home a shot inside the area before hitting the post with a diving header deep into stoppage time.

However, it proved a frustrating day for Pardew.

Chelsea 1-1 Burnley: Late Mee leveller shocks 10-man Blues

    985102_heroa.jpg

Premier League strugglers Burnley earned a shock 1-1 draw at 10-man Chelsea thanks to Ben Mee's late header at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Chelsea had taken the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour thanks to Branislav Ivanovic's fourth goal in six games in all competitions, and they looked comfortable for large periods.

However, Nemanja Matic was sent off with 20 minutes remaining for reacting angrily to a challenge from Ashley Barnes - a dismissal which will likely see the midfielder miss the upcoming League Cup final against Tottenham.

Seemingly buoyed by that sending off, Burnley snatched an equaliser with nine minutes to go as Mee rose highest to head in Kieran Trippier's left-wing corner.

It was a disappointing end to the week for Chelsea, with the club having attracted negative headlines for the racist actions of a small group of supporters in Paris ahead of the UEFA Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

For the visitors, meanwhile, who also came from behind to claim a draw at Manchester City in late December, it represents another potentially crucial point in their fight against relegation.

Chelsea had the first sight of goal in the fifth minute when Tom Heaton tipped over Juan Cuadrado's header after a cross from Filipe Luis - called back into the side as one of four changes from their meeting with PSG in midweek.

The hosts were in front nine minutes later thanks to Ivanovic's close-range finish.

Michael Kightly was robbed by Cuadrado who fed Hazard, and the Belgian weaved his way to the byline before cutting the ball back for Ivanovic to convert from inside the six-yard box.

Ivanovic thought he should have had a penalty in the 32nd minute when his shot struck the arm of Kightly inside the area, but referee Martin Atkinson waved away the appeals.

Chelsea felt they should have been awarded a spot-kick for a second time just before the interval when Burnley captain Jason Shackell pushed Diego Costa to the floor, but once again Atkinson decided in favour of the visitors.

Thibaut Courtois was not called into serious action until five minutes into the second half, when he reacted smartly to tip Barnes' deflected shot over the crossbar.

Chelsea responded as Costa brought a save out of Heaton five minutes later, the Spain international going in search of his 18th league goal of the campaign.

Tempers threatened to boil over in the 70th minute, when Barnes went over the top of the ball in a challenge on Matic, who angrily pushed the striker to the floor and was shown a straight red card, while the Burnley man went unpunished.

Barnes, perhaps fortunate to remain on the field, thought he had found an equaliser 10 minutes later but Courtois produced a superb one-handed save low to his right.

However, from the resulting corner, Mee headed home to spark scenes of jubilation among Burnley players and fans alike.

Deep into stoppage time, Danny Ings broke away as Burnley looked to steal an unlikely winner, but the striker fired wired of the target from the edge of the area.

Barcelona 0-1 Malaga: Juanmi dents Blaugrana title bid

    984452_heroa.jpg

Juanmi dealt Barcelona's title bid a sizeable blow as his first half strike saw Malaga come away from Camp Nou with a shock 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

Malaga claimed a 0-0 draw after successfully nullifying Lionel Messi and Neymar when the two sides met at La Rosaleda in September and they produced a fine display to claim their first Camp Nou victory since 1999.

Luis Suarez, who missed their last meeting, was unable to inspire a change in Barca's fortunes this time around, as their usually lethal frontline struggled after Juanmi capitalised on an early Dani Alves error to break the deadlock.

The hosts unsurprisingly dictated the tempo of the match, though Malaga's hard-working defence held firm in admirable fashion, while Javi Garcia's side posed a significant threat on the break.

Rafinha and Andres Iniesta saw Barca's best chances go begging in the first half, while opportunities were even rarer after the break, as Malaga proved impenetrable.

The visitors ultimately scraped over the finish line to claim a famous and surprising win despite Barca's intense late pressure, sealing a result that will raise smiles at title rivals Real Madrid.

Despite resting few key players in the lead up to Tuesday's Champions League trip to Manchester City, Barca trailed after just seven minutes, proving to be their own worst enemy.

Dani Alves sold Claudio Bravo short with a poor back-pass and Juanmi pounced, skipping beyond the goalkeeper before prodding home, doing little to help the Brazilian's bid for a new contract.

Barca almost hit back just two minutes later, but Weligton, who infamously clashed with Messi in this season's reverse fixture, crucially blocked Rafinha's powerful goal-bound effort.Though the hosts continued to dominate, Malaga's dogged defending ensured that clear-cut opportunities were few and far between.

And the visitors proved particularly dangerous on the counter-attack, nearly adding to their lead twice in quick succession just after the half-hour mark.Barca should have restored parity five minutes before the interval, though Iniesta could only send his tame header straight at Carlos Kameni.

The hosts' monopoly of the ball continued into the second half without much to show for their efforts, as the impressive Weligton and Roberto Rosales remained solid at the back.

Neymar and Messi attempted to force the issue, driving forward with intent and forcing the Malaga defence back, but generally the hosts' final ball fell flat, as opportunities eluded Luis Enrique's men.

Substitute Pedro sent their best chance into the side netting, leaving Luis Enrique with much to ponder ahead of their trip to face Premier League champions Manchester City in the Champions League next week.

Sunderland 0–0 West Brom: Bore draw keeps Baggies clear of danger

    985172_heroa.jpg

Sunderland again failed to find the net as they were held to a 0-0 draw by West Brom.

The home side believed Joleon Lescott should have been sent-off early on for bringing down Danny Graham, but the defender escaped with just a yellow card.

Gus Poyet's team had much the better of things though they were unable to create any chances of note as the match ended in stalemate.

Sunderland made five changes to the side that was dumped out of the FA Cup by Bradford City last time out, with Gus Poyet drafting Lee Cattermole – out since December with niggling groin injuries – straight back into the starting line-up.

The game started in controversial fashion when referee Mike Jones deemed that Lescott had not prevented a goal-scoring opportunity when he hauled down Graham on the edge of the area.

Despite Sunderland's protestations, Lescott escaped with just a booking, while Sebastian Larsson fired into the side-netting from the resulting free-kick.

Poyet's side continued to press West Brom, with the visitors unable to get the ball into the feet of in-form striker Brown Ideye.

However Sunderland lacked the quality to make their possession count against a typically organised Tony Pulis defence, though Jermain Defoe did go close before John O'Shea headed wide from a whipped Larsson free-kick.

Adam Johnson had the ball in the back of the net in the 45th minute when, after latching onto Santiago Vergini's cross at the back post, but the strike was incorrectly disallowed for offside.

Ben Foster had to be alert again a minute later to palm away Larsson's stinging drive before the break, but Vergini could not work the England man from close range 15 minutes into the second half unmarked from Larsson's corner.

Poyet introduced Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham with just over 20 minutes of normal time remaining, while Pulis sent on Chris Baird to shore up his defence.

Wickham brought Foster into action as Sunderland pushed for a winner, but the game ended goalless, to widespread indifference from the Stadium of Light crowd.

:(Swansea City 2-1 Manchester United: Gomis winner dents visitors' top-four hopes

    984792_heroa.jpg

Manchester United slipped up in their pursuit of a Champions League berth as Swansea City came from behind to win at the Liberty Stadium.

Ander Herrera cleared an early Bafetimbi Gomis header off the line before making an impact at the other end as he drove a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

United's lead lasted fewer than two minutes though as Ki-Sung Yueng nipped in to poke Jonjo Shelvey's low cross past David De Gea.

The Red Devils dominated thereafter, but fell behind with 17 minutes left on the clock as Shelvey's long-range effort deflected in off Gomis' back.

Robin van Persie's return from injury saw Radamel Falcao drop to the bench following a disappointing display at Preston North End in the FA Cup on Monday, while Swansea adopted an unfamiliar narrow formation as Gylfi Sigurdsson made his comeback from a three-match ban.

Garry Monk's new set-up almost paid off in the opening stages as Wayne Routledge found a gap in the United defence, but Sigurdsson's eventual effort deflected wide.

Gomis' powerful header from the resulting corner looked destined for the bottom left-hand corner before being cleared off the line by Herrera, and the French striker nodded over soon after.

United offered little in attack early on and Van Persie was unable to find the target from a tight angle when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski flapped at a Wayne Rooney cross.

Swansea continued to pose the greater threat, with Routledge – given time to turn in the United box – sending a soft effort into the arms of De Gea after 17 minutes.

Having saved his side at one end, it was Herrera who put United in front against the run of play at the other in the 28th minute.

Angel Di Maria found Herrera in space just inside the box and the Spanish midfielder guided a low strike into the bottom-left corner via the slightest of deflections from Swansea captain Ashley Williams.

That lead lasted just two minutes, though, as Ki – scorer of Swansea's opener in the victory at Old Trafford in August – turned in a Shelvey cross.

The South Korea international came close to applying the finish to another Shelvey centre early in the second half, but De Gea did well to rush off his line and thwart the attack.

Van Persie fired into the side-netting as United probed with a series of attacks, but the Swansea backline was holding firm.

And Swansea's patience paid off when Shelvey rifled home a winner from 20 yards, although the ball did take a significant nick off the back of Gomis.

United pressed forward, as they had done in search of a winner prior to Swansea's second strike, but the home side clung on for just their second win in eight league matches.
