Manchester United 3-0 Tottenham: Rooney & Fellaini punish woeful Spurs

    1091012_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney wrote his own headlines as Manchester United turned in a punch-perfect performance to defeat Tottenham 3-0 and strengthen the club's pursuit of a top-four Premier League finish.

England and United captain Rooney headed into Sunday's match amid an unusual media furore after footage emerged of him being supposedly floored in a mock boxing bout with Stoke City full-back Phil Bardsley at his home.

Rooney ensured he had the last laugh with a boxing-themed celebration when he put United 3-0 ahead in the 34th minute, completing a first half where nothing went right for the visitors at Old Trafford.

Having won six and lost two of their previous nine Premier League matches in 2015, Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham team headed north with hopes of drawing level on points with their fourth-placed opponents.

But they were faced with a relentless United side as goals from Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick inside the first 20 minutes set Louis van Gaal's men on the way to a victory that leaves them just two points behind misfiring neighbours Manchester City, who are second.

The excellent Carrick was one of three players to come into the United line-up following Monday night's dispiriting FA Cup quarter-final loss to Arsenal, alongside Juan Mata and Phil Jones, while Danny Rose was preferred to Ben Davies at left-back in Tottenham's only change.

There was an initially nervy start from United as David de Gea spared Jones from an embarrassing own goal in the third minute following a rash backpass.

But more sizeable holes in Tottenham's defensive set-up were soon apparent as Carrick strode into midfield unchallenged to play a measured throughball that Fellaini steered across Hugo Lloris and into the bottom corner in the ninth minute.

Roles were reversed 10 minutes later when Fellaini's attempt from Mata's in-swinging corner was partially cleared and Carrick calmly picked his spot with a fine header against his former club.

United were cutting Spurs to ribbons down the left flank, a state of affairs that prompted Pochettino to replace winger Andros Townsend with Mousa Dembele.

The 31st-minute substitution could not prevent the hosts from landing a seemingly inevitable knockout blow on their punch-drunk opponents.

Nabil Bentaleb carelessly coughed up possession on halfway, allowing Rooney to tear through a retreating and dishevelled Tottenham defence before firing home.

Dembele wasted a rare opening for Pochettino's men early in the second half, while Bentaleb made an important block to thwart Daley Blind at the other end.

The earlier ferocious pace had understandably subsided by the time that Ander Herrera lashed into the side netting in search of United's fourth.

Tottenham suffered no further damage, but their first defeat in six outings against United had long since been a formality - in-form striker Harry Kane prevented by De Gea from reducing the arrears in the 89th minute.

Old Trafford rose to welcome a late Premier League debut for highly rated youngster Andreas Pereira, but it was an afternoon when their long-time hero Rooney stole the limelight.

Chelsea 1-1 Southampton: Tadic penalty pegs back Blues

    1090502_heroa.jpg

Southampton withstood a second-half barrage from Premier League leaders Chelsea to take a point from Stamford Bridge thanks to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

Diego Costa's fifth goal in his last six league games gave Chelsea - seeking to capitalise on Manchester City's surprise 1-0 defeat to Burnley - an early lead, although that lasted just eight minutes thanks to Dusan Tadic's penalty.

Ronald Koeman's side threatened to add a second against a home side appearing somewhat fatigued following Wednesday's Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

However, while Jose Mourinho's men were far from their fluent best, they always looked the more likely to grab a winner after the break, with Costa striking a post before Fraser Forster denied Willian, Eden Hazard and substitute Loic Remy.

Chelsea were ultimately unable to break through, but now lead nearest rivals City by six points at the top of the table and still hold a game in hand.

Southampton are likely to be heartened by a point as they maintain their bid for a European place, while Mourinho will hope his side can rediscover their killer touch as they bid to make his prediction of Premier League glory a reality.

Willian was one of two Chelsea changes and the Brazilian posed early problems for Southampton down the right, but it was frontman Costa who opened the scoring 11 minutes in.

Branislav Ivanovic delivered a deep cross from the right following Hazard's lay-off, and an unmarked Costa had the simplest of tasks to head home and register his 19th goal of the season.

Southampton would have been level soon after were it not for a smart save from Thibaut Courtois that denied Sadio Mane.

However, after Mane had been brought down in the box by Nemanja Matic, who received a yellow card for his mistimed challenge, Courtois was beaten by Tadic from 12 yards despite getting a foot to the ball.

The equaliser buoyed Koeman's side and the pace of Tadic, Mane and the recalled Shane Long caused John Terry's backline plenty of problems.

Matic was perhaps fortunate not to see a second yellow for another foul on Mane after the break.

The fit-again Toby Alderweireld, making a first start since January due to a recent hamstring problem, saw the resulting free-kick saved by Courtois before Mourinho opted to replace Matic with Ramires.

Costa was back in the thick of it before the hour mark as he saw penalty appeals waved away following a tangle with Jose Fonte before diverting Willian's wayward strike onto Forster's right-hand post.

A jinking run from Tadic failed to bring about a second for Southampton and Forster then proved the hero as he kept out efforts from Willian, Hazard and Oscar in the latter stages.

Remy was the next to be denied by Forster before Terry fired wide in a dramatic finale that saw the Stamford Bridge faithful ultimately left frustrated.

Marseille 0-0 Lyon: Morel sees red as controversial call denies Ocampos

    1092382_heroa.jpg

Marseille failed to make up ground on Ligue 1 leaders Lyon as the two sides played out an entertaining, but ultimately goalless, draw at the Velodrome on Sunday.

The Olympico stalemate saw Lyon extend their lead over second-placed Paris Saint-Germain to two points, and stay four ahead of l'OM, who had Jeremy Morel sent off.

A disciplined performance from the visitors left Marcelo Bielsa's side frustrated, but Lyon had chances to win the game as the country's top scorer Alexandre Lacazette twice wasted the sort of opportunities he was snapping up prior to a February injury.Lucas Ocampos also had a goal controversially ruled out in the second half, with replays proving inconclusive as to whether his effort had crossed the line.

Bielsa showed his faith in Andre-Pierre Gignac by bringing him back into the side at the expense of Michy Batshuayi, who scored twice in their 6-1 win over Toulouse last week, and the big striker had the first meaningful chance of the game inside three minutes, cutting inside from the right to fire his left-footed shot straight at Anthony Lopes when a square pass to Andre Ayew would have been a better option.

Ligue 1's top scorer Lacazette should have opened the scoring a few minutes later when played through on goal by Jordan Ferri, but his tame effort was too close to Steve Mandanda in the Marseille goal.

A glut of goals was expected at the Veledrome between Ligue 1 most lethal sides and Mendy wasted the third clear chance of a frantic first 13 minutes as he scuffed his shot into the ground. The last eight league games between these two had produced 33 goals, while no Ligue 1 encounter has produced more than the 89 this match-up has enjoyed since 2000.

Gignac thought he had opened the scoring on the half-hour but a sprawling Lopes superbly tipped the striker's header wide for a corner.Lyon did well to quell the hosts' Bielsa-inspired approach as the half wore on, enjoying periods of possession in which they were able to slow the tempo.

But Lyon clearly lacked a cutting edge going forward which coach Hubert Fournier sort to remedy by introducing Clinton Njie for an ineffective Rachid Ghezzal on 42 minutes.Dimitri Payet began to get into his groove after the break, first breaking forward to almost play in Gignac before testing Lopes from long range.

With Payet more involved, Marseille picked up the pace again after the restart, but Lyon should have gone ahead after the hour when Lacazette lost the flight of a deep free kick with the goal gaping from six yards.

The chances continued to arrive as Payet flashed a volley wide from long-range before Gignac's angled, right-footed strike came back off the post with Lopes beaten.

The temperature was rising in the Velodrome with 20 minute remaining and the hosts thought they had won the game when Ocampos appeared to have bundled home a winner. Lopes clawed it out and replays proved inconclusive as to whether the whole ball had indeed crossed the line.

Jeremy Morel was then dismissed with five minutes to go as the game threatened to boil over, receiving a straight red card for a lunge at Maxime Gonalons.

Mandanda then rescued a point Marseille with a wonderful, diving save to tip a low Corentin Tolisso shot around the post.

Inter 1-1 Cesena: Palacio rescues point but Nerazzurri falter in Europe chase

    1092542_heroa.jpg

Inter dropped more points in their quest to return to Europe as Rodrigo Palacio's goal was enough only for a 1-1 draw against Cesena on Sunday.

The San Siro outfit are without a victory since beating Celtic in the Europa League last month and have since failed to overcome Fiorentina, Napoli and Wolfsburg.

Inter looked likely to end that disappointing streak as they started the brighter, but fell behind to a Gregoire Defrel lob after 28 minutes.

The home side upped their game after the break and, after Mateo Kovacic had seen an overhead kick ruled out for offside, Palacio restored parity.

For all their pressure, though, Inter were unable to find the winner – Lukas Podolski coming closest when he powered an effort against the post.

The result lifts Inter to seventh, while a point is not enough to haul Cesena out of the relegation zone.

Fredy Guarin was unable to get on the end of a dangerous Dodo cross in the 13th minute as the hosts applied the early pressure.

Inter continued to knock on the door and Zdravko Kuzmanovic directed a powerful header wide from a Guarin ball over the top a minute later, but the hosts were forced into a change when Xherdan Shaqiri pulled up with an apparent hamstring problem, with Kovacic his replacement.

Kovacic instantly looked to terrorise the visiting defence, running at the back four in a bid to force the breakthrough, but it was Cesena who opened the scoring against the run of play.

Defrel ran onto a Carlos Carbonero throughball before lofting a delightful chip over the head of the advancing Samir Handanovic.

Kuzmanovic saw a drilled effort blocked in the box before the half was up and Inter emerged for the second half with renewed vigour.

Kovacic buried the ball in the back of the net with a superb overhead kick within two minutes of the restart, but it was not long before the home side were back on terms.

Mauro Icardi lost his man on the right wing and whipped in a cross to Palacio, who tucked the ball in at the near post, although goalkeeper Nicola Leali should have done better.

Podolski – a half-time replacement for Kuzmanovic – rattled the left-hand post with a rifled shot from 20 yards out soon after, before Carbonero had claims for a penalty turned down at the other end when he appeared to be upended by Andrea Ranocchia.

The pair went nose to nose in the aftermath and Carbonero might count himself lucky to have avoided a red card for thrusting his head into Inter skipper Ranocchia's head.

Icardi flashed a strike across goal before time was up, but Inter's quest for a winner fell short as they made it four matches in a row without win.

Bordeaux 3-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Parisiens stunned by Rolan late show

    1090992_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain were brought back down to earth with a bang as a late Diego Rolan goal saw Bordeaux inflict a 3-2 defeat on the Ligue 1 champions on Sunday.

Rolan struck two minutes from time to consign the French champions to their first defeat in 16 games in all competitions and strike a blow to their hopes of retaining
    the title.

PSG knocked Chelsea out of the last-16 of the Champions League on away goals in midweek by drawing 2-2 after extra-time at Stamford Bridge, despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic's first-half sending off.

The Sweden international responded by scoring twice against Willy Sagnol's men to cancel out goals from Ludovic Sane and Wahbi Khazri, but Rolan had the final say to enhance Bordeaux's chances of qualifying for the Europa League.

Former Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc's 100th game in charge of PSG proved to be one to forget, as he also lost David Luiz and Yohan Cabaye to injury, with his side trailing Lyon by a point ahead of their game at Marseille later in the day.
Backed by a vocal home crowd, Bordeaux made a bright start as PSG struggled to live with their pace and power.

Diego Contento had a great chance to put them in front when Isaac Kiese Thelin cut the ball back into his path, but the left-back drilled his powerful shot straight at goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.Thelin was proving to be a handful and the Sweden striker turned Thiago Silva before testing the Italian with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Sirigu was unable to prevent Bordeaux from taking the lead 18 minutes in, though, as skipper Sane rose highest to meet a Khazri cross with a header which crept inside the far post.

PSG were rattled, but Ibrahimovic had a great chance to equalise 11 minutes before half-time and was denied by Bordeaux stopper Cedric Carrasso after Thiago Motta picked the striker out with an incisive pass.

David Luiz was replaced by Zoumana Camara before the break after picking up an injury as the champions' frustration mounted.PSG had been comfortably second best in the first half, but they were gifted an equaliser five minutes after the interval courtesy of some calamitous defending.

Mariano's dreadful attempted clearance went straight up in the air and, when Javier Pastore nodded the ball on, Ibrahimovic capitalised on indecision from Tiago Ilori and Carrasso to nip in and poke the ball beyond the keeper and into the net.

Bordeaux still posed a big forward threat and PSG were fortunate when Clement Chantome's strike took a slight deflection before hitting Sirigu in the face. The unlucky Cabaye then limped off soon after coming on and PSG were behind with 20 minutes remaining when Khazri sliced a volley up in the air and Thelin headed the ball back for him to nod in at the back post.

PSG ought to have been level two minutes later, but Carrasso produced a fine double save to thwart Ezequiel Lavezzi before Ibrahimovic did level after Mariano was adjudged to have upended the Argentine attacker five minutes from time.
There was still one further twist, though, as Mariano made amends by crossing for Rolan to slot home the winner and stun PSG.

Everton 3-0 Newcastle: Lukaku on target as Toffees get back to winning ways

    1091292_heroa.jpg

Everton capitalised on crucial mistakes from 10-man Newcastle United to earn themselves a desperately needed 3-0 Premier League win at Goodison Park.

Roberto Martinez's men came into Sunday's meeting with just one victory in 12 in the league but errors from Tim Krul and Yoan Gouffran handed them the first two goals, before Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was sent off and substitute Ross Barkley added a late third.

Everton took the lead midway through the first half when Newcastle goalkeeper Krul - who gifted Manchester United's winner to Ashley Young last time out - let James McCarthy's weak shot from 20 yards into the net.

Then, with 10 minutes of the second half gone, Gouffran was dispossessed inside his own penalty area and his subsequent foul on Aaron Lennon allowed Romelu Lukaku - scorer of a late penalty in Thursday's UEFA Europa League win over Dynamo Kiev - to once again convert from 12 yards.

Shortly afterwards, Coloccini was perhaps harshly shown a straight red card by referee Martin Atkinson for a foul on Lennon and Barkley's cool finish in stoppage time completed a miserable day for Newcastle.

With victory, Everton lifted themselves six points clear of the drop zone, while Newcastle remain 11th, four points better off.

Newcastle came close to opening the scoring in the third minute as Everton failed to clear a corner.

The ball fell to Gabriel Obertan, whose shot was parried by Tim Howard, and Mike Williamson's rebound was kept out on the line by McCarthy, with the visitors appealing in vain for handball.

Lukaku then tested Krul with a low shot three minutes later as both sides started with purpose.

With 20 minutes gone, Everton took the lead as McCarthy picked up Lukaku's lay-off and hit a low shot that Krul somehow allowed to creep under his legs as he dived in the wrong direction.

Newcastle enjoyed a sustained period of pressure as the interval approached but, with the final action of the half, Everton almost doubled their advantage when Antolin Alcaraz's header from a corner was cleared from just in front of the goalline.

Ryan Taylor curled a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar early in the second half but in the 56th minute Lukaku put his side further ahead.

After being robbed by Lennon inside the box, Gouffran brought down the winger with a clumsy challenge and Lukaku sent Krul the wrong way from the spot for his first league goal since the end of January.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors three minutes later as Coloccini was shown a straight red card for a lunge on Lennon.

Arouna Kone, Leon Osman and Barkley were all denied by Krul as Everton went in search of a third, before Howard produced a fine save to keep out Moussa Sissoko's low shot 12 minutes from time.

And in the final minute of stoppage time Everton broke upfield and Christian Atsu fed Barkley, who rounded Krul and slotted home to seal a comprehensive victory.

Real Madrid 2-0 Levante: Bale doubles up to quieten critics

    1092832_heroa.jpg

Gareth Bale went some way towards silencing his critics as he scored both goals in Real Madrid's 2-0 win over Levante on Sunday.

Real had failed to win any of their previous three matches, with the Santiago Bernabeu faithful reacting furiously as they scrapped past Schalke in the Champions League on Tuesday despite a 4-3 defeat on the night.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti has had his position called into question in the Spanish press, while Bale - without a goal in nine matches before Sunday - also found his recent performances to be under heavy scrutiny.

Despite once again enduring a mixed reaction from the home support, Bale was influential throughout an impressive first-half performance and broke the deadlock after 19 minutes before turning home Cristiano Ronaldo's strike as the interval approached.

The result means Real head into next weekend's pivotal Clasico showdown at leaders Barcelona just a point behind their great rivals at the top of the table.

An error-strewn display against Schalke in midweek meant Iker Casillas dropped to the bench and Keylor Navas started in goal, with the Costa Rica international a virtual spectator as Real dominated from the first whistle against his former club.

Bale almost fired an instant riposte to his critics by brilliantly controlling the ball with his chest and knee before hooking a volley over in the second minute.

The Wales winger and Karim Benzema combined for Ronaldo to hit the post shortly afterwards amid relentless early Real pressure.

Benzema had the ball in the net after 16 minutes from an offside position when Diego Marino unconvincingly parried a shot by Luka Modric - the midfielder impressing on his first start since suffering a thigh injury in November.

Real's front three were all involved when the opening goal arrived: Benzema crossed from the right for Ronaldo to have an acrobatic attempt cleared off the line, only as far as Bale, who rifled home right-footed.

He peeled away covering his ears and kicked the corner flag in a fired-up celebration.

Tono made a vital interception to deny Ronaldo - who cut a frustrated figure throughout the match - before Bale saw a rasping cross deflected against the crossbar.

While Bale was the architect on that occasion, he did not know too much about his second goal three minutes before half-time when Ronaldo drove Dani Carvajal's cutback goalwards and the shot decisively clipped the ex-Tottenham man's instep.

Bizarrely, the announcement of Bale as the goalscorer was greeted with boos from a section of the Real support.

The second half began at a more serene pace, although Benzema looked to illuminate matters by lashing a volley over from an acute angle.

Real's France striker almost got the goal his efforts deserved in improbable fashion after 65 minutes when he backheeled a volley from Ronaldo's right-wing cross over his shoulder and against the upright.

To their credit, Levante avoided any further damage as the match meandered to a close - Real substitute Javier Hernandez spurning a free header in the final minute - and they are third bottom and without an away win since September.

'Fragile' PSG did not deserve to win - Blanc

    964902_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain coach Laurent Blanc says his "fragile" side deserved nothing more from their 3-2 Ligue 1 defeat at Bordeaux on Sunday.

Having knocked Chelsea out of the Champions League on Wednesday, PSG twice came from behind to pull level at Stade Chaban-Delmas through Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

However, Diego Rolan slotted home late on to consign PSG to a first defeat in 16 in all competitions, while David Luiz and Yohan Cabaye were forced off injured in the 38th and 60th minutes respectively.

Ibrahimovic was incensed at the performance of the officials after the match but Blanc was more disappointed by his side's injuries than the result itself."We lost because Bordeaux deserved to win more than Paris did," Blanc said after the game. "The reason? There isn't just one reason.

"We perhaps deserved a draw because we twice came from behind, but Bordeaux dominated the match. We were too fragile."We weren't as technically proficient as usual, which can be explained by several factors.

"We were expecting a tough match. We played with 10 men on Wednesday [against Chelsea]."This afternoon, they really took the game to us. I don't think we had the resources to win, as simple as that.

"More than the defeat, I'm most unhappy that we lost two players. David Luiz has a muscular problem, his hamstring. For Cabaye, it's the knee."

Pochettino baffled by Tottenham's dismal Old Trafford display

    1092062_heroa.jpg

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was at a loss to explain his side's abject display in their 3-0 Premier League loss at Manchester United.

Pochettino's men headed to Old Trafford on Sunday searching for a win that would have pulled them level on points with their fourth-placed hosts.

But Spurs were blown away as Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney scored amid a poor first half for the visitors.

"The result is a consequence of our poor performance," a clearly frustrated Pochettino told reporters after the match.

"From the beginning, we started the game very slow - physically and mentally - and we didn't understand why.

"I think we were ready to compete but it is true that, from the beginning, it was difficult. Our first half was poor and, at 3-0, it is difficult to come back into the game."

United's rampant form early on in the contest prompted Pochettino to introduce Mousa Dembele in place of Andros Townsend and reshape his overrun midfield after 31 minutes.

Top scorer Harry Kane was also effectively shackled throughout but the Tottenham boss believes that individual and collective errors were to blame for the defeat as opposed to any tactical failings.

"When you concede and make a lot of mistakes in football, you play in the manner that we played, it is difficult to win the game," he lamented.

"If you play with three or four strikers; if you play with five midfielders; if you play with three, four or five defensive players, it is the same: it's about the individual and the collective.

"We were very poor. That is why we lost the game."

Despite the damaging result, Pochettino remains confident that Tottenham can stay in the hunt for a coveted Champions League qualification spot.

"We are in a position where all is possible but it is true that it is very difficult because we need to fight with the big, big sides," he added.

"I am very disappointed for our performance because we did not deliver it how we do when we play in a normal way. I don't remember when the last time was that we had a similar performance and that is why we are all disappointed."

Champions League slipping from Inter's grasp, admits Mancini

    1092932_heroa.jpg

Roberto Mancini has all but conceded defeat in the race for the Champions League places after Inter's 1-1 draw with Cesena on Sunday.

Rodrigo Palacio salvaged a point at San Siro but the 2010 European champions could find themselves 12 points adrift of third-placed Lazio should they beat Torino on Monday. And Mancini has acknowledged that returning to Europe's top competition could now be out of the question for his side.

"The first half was below par and Cesena realised they could get us into trouble," he said after the match. "They did more running than us. We weren't very bright or aggressive."In the second half we got the goal straight away and pressed for a while but I don't think it was a good game.

"With a win we would've reached 39 points with 11 rounds to go. Now it's going to be pretty difficult to reach third place. A win would've given us hope but there are too many teams in front of us now.

"At the moment there's no point talking about third place, it's not even logical to do so."Mancini maintains his side are continuing to develop under his guidance but accepts he may have been premature in his expectations when returning to the Inter dugout in November.

"I think all players want to do better, but unfortunately this team is improving slowly and switching from good performances to bad ones," he added. "We can only work and it might take more time to improve."Perhaps it is my fault, I am an optimist by nature and thought we could achieve something more in less time. It's bad for our fans, as they suffer, but we are suffering too."

Mancini also revealed Xherdan Shaqiri is a doubt for the Europa League clash with Wolfsburg on Thursday after he was forced off with an injury.

:cool:David Villa scores first NYCFC home goal

    1055462_heroa.jpg

David Villa opened the scoring at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, marking the first time in the MLS expansion club's history that a goal was registered at home.
The 19th-minute strike was the Spanish legend's first MLS goal.

Villa took possession outside of the box, moved the ball to midfielder Ned Grabavoy and cut past his defender. The midfielder found Villa with the return pass, and the forward did the rest, curling his shot around New England Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth for the historic tally.Mix Diskerud scored the team's first-ever goal in last week's 1-1 draw with Orlando City.

Former Spain international Villa, 33, has now scored over 250 league goals in his career, which has seen him star for the likes of Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona before moving to the MLS.
