Suarez: I never thought I’d play in a Clasico

    1100292_heroa.jpg

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez admits he never thought he’d get to play in a match as big this Sunday’s Clasico against Real Madrid.

The Uruguay international had his first taste of one of the world’s great derby clashes in October last year, when he made his official Barca debut in the 3-1 defeat to Madrid at the Bernabeu.Ahead of the return fixture, the former Liverpool striker says he is still getting used to the fact that he is set to become a Clasico regular.

“I never imagined that I’d play in a game of this magnitude,” he told the club website, adding that this time he hopes for a better result.“I was focused on my nervousness about coming back to play. Aside from it being a Clasico, it was important for me. I didn’t enjoy it as you should enjoy a Clasico, let’s hope I can do it this time.”

Following a stuttering start to his time in Spain, the 28-year-old has now hit seven Liga goals and four to help Barca into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“I’m happy and I feel like I’m really helping the team, something that makes me a lot calmer,” the attacker said.

“There was a time that I was very hard on myself, not just because I wasn’t scoring goals but also because I felt like I wasn’t helping the team, something that worried me. I always knew that the goals would come.”

Bayern: Robben’s like an F1 engine

    1016042_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben must be treated like the engine of a Formula 1 car, according to the club’s doctor.

The 31-year-old Dutchman suffered a number of injury problems earlier on in his career, which he says stunted his development during three years with Chelsea between 2004 and 2007, before his fortunes changed after he took up regular sessions with an osteopath while at Real Madrid in 2009.“Arjen is comparable to a Formula 1 engine,” said club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt.

“He will be inspected prior to each game. And when he gets the okay – off he goes.”Robben has started 19 of Bayern’s 25 league games so far this season, and seven of their eight Champions League fixtures.

And Muller-Wohlfahrt went on to say that the biggest thanks his medical team received arrived in 2012, when Robben cited them among the reasons for him extending his contract with Bundesliga giants.

“When it came to the contract extension, Arjen has said that he would remain in Bavaria for the medical care. He had good deals [to go elsewhere]. This is the biggest and best compliment."

Simeone: Atletico Madrid need more from Torres

    1121852_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone says he has expected more from Fernando Torres since his return to the club and hopes the striker can improve his goalscoring rate towards the end of the season.

The Spaniard, on loan from AC Milan, scored his first league goal in 10 games in Saturday's 2-0 win over Getafe, adding to his two strikes against Real Madrid and one against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.While Simeone feels Torres is improving, he insists the former Liverpool and Chelsea man has not proven his worth as of yet.

"We needed a lot more from Torres than what he has been giving," said the coach.
"I am pleased that he scored - Raul Jimenez flicked it on well for him. He is a lot better now, he is more involved with his team-mates and his coordination is better.
"But we need a lot more from him; he is used to the demands placed on him. He lives to score goals and he really needed to get off the mark in the league."There is a healthy competition developing between him and Mario Mandzukic, who is a decisive player for us."

After Torres' third-minute opener, Tiago added a second towards the end of the first half and that turned out to be enough for the reigning Liga champions.Simeone was delighted to see Atletico regain some effectiveness from set pieces as they ended a three-game winless run in the Primera Division.

"The team played well during the first 25 minutes - we combined well and played with intensity," he said."We created a lot of chances on goal. In the end, we punished Getafe from set-pieces."

    Wenger: Arsenal can't catch Chelsea

    1042012_heroa.jpg

Despite sitting just four points behind leaders Chelsea, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger feels his side have no chance of catching up with Jose Mourinho's men.

The Gunners made hard work of a 2-1 win at Newcastle with Olivier Giroud scoring two first-half goals before Moussa Sissoko's goal for the home side, as the visitors secured a vital win which keeps them in touch of the top two.

But Wenger admits Chelsea, who also have two games in hand on Arsenal, have too much of an advantage to be overhauled by either the north London outfit or second-placed Manchester City.

"Chelsea have too much security and at the moment I feel they have enough to be quite serene," he said.
"We have Manchester City in front of us but if you look behind us it is tight as well so the important thing is to win our games, but Chelsea have a good security.
"We will try and win the next game and then the next one, that is what we have to do."

The Frenchman admits his side were run very close by their hosts as many of his players were suffering from tiredness, but praised them for keeping up their winning streak.

"The last 40 minutes were difficult because our legs had gone a little bit," said Wenger.

"Newcastle played very well in the second half but we had an outstanding second half going forward. I'm proud of the performance we put in.

"We have played four games in two weeks and three away games at Manchester United, Monaco and here - we have won all three."

Wenger singled out match winner Giroud for his contribution, adding: "He was very good. He scores the goals, he fights hard and keeps the ball up front.

"He is like every striker, he wants to score goals and the confidence comes from scoring goals, it's a vicious circle. "He is a fighter and has improved technically."

Pochettino: Hat-trick hero Kane was great

    1122962_heroa.jpg

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino paid tribute to Harry Kane after the young striker celebrated his first England call-up by scoring a hat-trick in Saturday's 4-3 Premier League win against Leicester City.

With national boss Roy Hodgson watching on from the stands at White Hart Lane, Kane moved on to 19 top-flight goals this season - making him the division's top scorer.

"It was great. If a striker scores three goals, the performance is always great," Pochettino said.

"Fantastic performance. I am very pleased for him - that's the first time he's had three goals in the Premier League in one game.

"Harry is part of Tottenham. I'm happy for him but I think we worked hard. It was a difficult game but it's true Harry is a very important player for us. He's in a very good moment in his career."

Spurs had squandered a two-goal lead to allow Leicester to draw level before a penalty handed Kane his hat-trick goal, with Jeffrey Schlupp's own goal ensuring that David Nugent's injury-time strike was only a consolation for the league's bottom side.

Pochettino feels that the way Tottenham allowed their opponents back into the game should prove a valuable learning experience for his side, who were beaten 3-0 at Manchester United last time out.

"Maybe it's part of the process because we are a very young team and we need to improve," the Argentine noted. "After this season, we need to improve our defensive game. After Manchester United, it was important to win."

The Spurs boss also confirmed that goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was taken to hospital after being taken off injured following a collision with Kyle Walker in the fourth minute.

"We don't have news, he's in the hospital and we are waiting for the doctor now," Pochettino explained. "We hope that nothing big is wrong but we are waiting for the news. It's a big cut on the tendon on his knee."

We are not underperforming, insists Allardyce

    1122562_heroa.jpg

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce has criticised Sky Sports after the channel misquoted Hammers vice-chairman Karren Brady during a post-match interview.

The 60-year-old, having seen his side beat Sunderland 1-0 at Upton Park, was asked for his response to Brady's column in The Sun, with Sky's post-match interviewer claiming that she had written that the club had "underperformed" this season.

Allardyce responded by saying: "She's wrong. She's wrong in what she's saying. Underperforming? No. Should we have got more results than we have? Yes."

Sky later issued a clarification, with Brady actually having written "underachieving", and the Hammers boss hit out at the question in his post-match press conference.

"I'm going to fine Sky for making me criticise the vice-chairman, which I would never do publicly," he fumed. "They shouldn't have slipped up. Stick to football and stop asking questions like that.

"The performances are there, the results are not - that's been the case over the last 11 games. Chelsea here, Manchester United here, Tottenham away ... we haven't been able to find a result."

Allardyce also praised his side after their victory, which came courtesy of Diafra Sakho's 88th-minute winner.

"For us it's a massive win," he added. "We're still in a great position, 42 points - I think that's the same as last year - and we're heading for the best points tally since we returned to the Premier League. This squad needs to grow and get bigger but we need to finish this season well."

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat, meanwhile, praised Adam Johnson after the winger made his first appearance for the club since his arrest for alleged sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl, despite the hostile reception that he received at Upton Park.

"Johnson came in on Wednesday and I spoke with him and life goes on," the new Black Cats boss remarked. "He did well. He's a very good player; I was happy I could bring him in."

Ancelotti: My future is not on the line in El Clasico

    971372_heroa.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti insists he is not fearing the sack ahead of Real Madrid’s crucial Clasico against rivals Barcelona on Sunday.

The Italian’s position as coach at the Bernabeu has come under scrutiny after a poor run of form saw the European champions lose top spot to Barca in La Liga and unconvincingly edge past Schalke in the Champions League last 16 after losing the second leg 4-3.

Defeat to Luis Enrique’s men would leave Madrid four points adrift at the league’s summit with 10 matches left to play, but while admitting the Clasico was a vital game, Ancelotti does not think it will decide his future.

The coach, who also said the smartest team would triumph in the match at Camp Nou, insists there are still a number of other vital fixtures to play before the end of 2014-15, not least the Champions League quarter-final against city rivals Atletico Madrid."I do not feel as though my future is on the line,” Ancelotti told reporters.

“This is just an important game for Madridistas. It is the same for Barcelona. Both teams have a global image to live up to and have to give a good impression.“But this match won’t be as decisive as the Champions League tie against Atletico.

"The atmosphere in the dressing room is different because this is a special game.We are playing a great side at an important moment of the season.

“We haven’t played well recently but our confidence is exactly the same as it was before. The players are calm and confident and ready to put in the best game possible.”

Coaching icon Arrigo Sacchi recently paid tribute to Ancelotti’s patience but the former AC Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss says even he has limits.
“Patience is part of my character although the atmosphere here helps me,” said Ancelotti.“Some may think that there are no limits to my patience but I do have limits. I think in this job it is important to remain level-headed when dealing with the press, the club and particularly the players.

“I try to keep a cool head and think positively, especially ahead of a game like this one.”Club president Florentino Perez insisted Ancelotti's future was not under threat at a press conference last week.

Inzaghi: I know I have to prove myself

    1123862_heroa.jpg

AC Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi has admitted he needs to prove himself as a coach if he is to remain at the club beyond this summer. The Italian has been under immense pressure for much of this season, with his side currently sitting seven points behind the final Europa League spot.

Inzaghi, though, was delighted with Saturday's 3-1 win over Cagliari, which moved Milan up to seventh in the table - at least until many of the teams around them have played on Sunday."I have to prove myself. I knew that there would be difficulties and it was unrealistic to think that I would not suffer," he told reporters after the game.

"I see more experienced coaches with top teams that are suffering too. I feel the trust of everyone, although we are not in the position in the table that we would like to be."I feel the team is close to me. I speak to Galliani three times a day. I have a contract and I want to continue to do well as long as I get the chance.

"I want to return Milan to the top positions, as we saw up until December. Now we create seven or eight goalscoring chances each game - this is the Milan that pleases me."We have 10 finals to play, we have to play well and then the club will decide on my future. If I get to stay, then I'll be at Milan my whole life."

Jeremy Menez scored twice and Philippe Mexes also found the target to render Diego Farias' goal irrelevant and the coach feels it was a strong performance from the Rossoneri."I'm happy for the team because we had collected less points than we deserved in recent games," said Inzaghi.

"Cagliari's attack causes problems for any team, but we created a lot. This is the way to go. Since the game against Fiorentina on Monday, it is as if we started a new season."

:):cool:Van Persie targets comeback against Man City

    1015042_heroa.jpg

Robin van Persie aims to make his comeback from injury in April's derby clash with Manchester City.

The Manchester United striker has been out of action since damaging ankle ligaments in February's defeat at Swansea City.

Van Persie's rehabilitation efforts have thus far centred on fitness and gym work but he will begin training outdoors again at the start of the week.

United anticipate that it could take up to 10 days before he is ready to rejoin full first-team training and, assuming that there are no setbacks, is likely to be considered for selection ahead of the derby at Old Trafford on April 12.

Van Persie's third season with the Red Devils has been a frustrating one, despite the arrival of Louis van Gaal. The pair combined to help an unheralded Dutch team to reach the semi finals of the World Cup last summer but Van Gaal's presence in the dugout has failed to trigger a return to the form which saw the striker catapult United to a 20th league title in 2013.

In 24 league appearances so far this season, Van Persie has scored a respectable 10 times but only twice in his last nine games in all competitions before his latest injury setback.

The ex-Arsenal star, who will turn 32 in August, has only 16 months left to run on his contract and Goal understands that he is yet to enter into serious discussions over his long-term future.

I'll always be grateful to Mourinho - Bruce

    1123972_heroa.jpg

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has revealed that a crate of red wine is behind his good relationship with his Chelsea counterpart, Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has been known to rub a number of Premier League bosses up the wrong way but Bruce only has positive things to say about the Portuguese, who takes his Chelsea side to the KC Stadium on Sunday.

The Tigers manager believes that the mutual respect between them goes back to when Mourinho, during his first spell at Stamford Bridge, loaned and then sold Finnish striker Mikael Forssell to Birmingham City - then managed by Bruce.

"He gave me Mikael Forssell a long time ago at Birmingham and I think I sent him a crate of red to say thank you," the Englishman told reporters. "I think he enjoyed my taste in red wine."

Bruce also insists that there is more to Mourinho than meets the eye.

"What you see is not what you get," he continued. "He's a really good football man and, when you call him, he has always tried to help me.

"When you're a young manager, which I was at the time, and you're needing a favour - the same goes for Arsene Wenger too - they've always done me a favour so that stays with me.

"No matter what you think of him - if you ring him, he'll always call me back and for that I'll always be grateful.

"Whenever Chelsea come to town, I've always got the hugest respect for what he's done, what he's achieved and what he is, because I do believe he is box-office.

"I believe we're better off with him being in the Premier League, even though Chelsea were maybe easier to beat when he wasn't involved."

Asked whether he would share a glass of red wine with Mourinho following Sunday's match, Bruce added: "Will I get any nice stuff here? I'll have to get a bottle from 'Booze Hut' over the road."

Lloris to miss France friendlies with knee injury

    919172_heroa.jpg

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will miss France's upcoming friendly matches after being stretchered off in the opening minutes of their Premier League clash against Leicester City.

The shot stopper came racing off his line inside the opening 90 seconds of the encounter at White Hart Lane to deal with a through-ball, only to collide with Foxes forward Jamie Vardy.

A stretcher was called for almost immediately and after some treatment, Lloris was removed from the pitch and replaced by Michel Vorm.

Heading into the home match against Nigel Pearson's side, Lloris had not missed a minute in the Premier League this season, but Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the 28-year old had suffered a large cut to his knee.

And the injury means he will miss France's upcoming friendlies with Brazil and Denmark, with Didier Deschamps calling up Rennes' Benoit Costil as a replacement.
