:love:Liverpool 1-2 Manchester United: Magical Mata makes the difference as Gerrard sees red

    1126122_heroa.jpg

Steven Gerrard was sensationally sent off just 38 seconds into what will likely be his final Liverpool appearance against Manchester United, as Louis van Gaal's men took a huge step towards Champions League qualification with a 2-1 win at Anfield.

The Reds captain was left on the bench by boss Brendan Rodgers before being brought on at half-time, only to be dismissed by referee Martin Atkinson less than a minute after his introduction.

Having contested a full-blooded 50/50 challenge with Ander Herrera, Gerrard saw red for stamping on the leg of the Spaniard, meaning he will now serve a three-match ban that will leave him with just five more Premier League games in a Liverpool shirt ahead of his summer move LA Galaxy.

Earlier, Herrera had set up Mata for the opening goal with a superb pass as United suffocated a Liverpool side who had not lost a league game since their 3-0 reverse at Old Trafford in December.

The visitors' task was made easier in the second half thanks to Gerrard's moment of madness, with Mata subsequently doubling United's advantage with a goal that, on another day, would likely have stolen the headlines.

Mata found the net with an acrobatic scissor kick, as Van Gaal's men opened up a five-point gap over Liverpool in the race for fourth place.

Daniel Sturridge netted a consolation with Liverpool's first shot on target with 21 minutes left, but the hosts never looked like mounting a comeback and had Simon Mignolet not saved an injury-time penalty from Wayne Rooney, United would have won even more convincingly.

After a cagey start, a moment of brilliance from United broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, as Mata silenced the home fans with a goal in front of The Kop.

The Spaniard timed his run to perfection to meet a superb through ball from compatriot Herrera and coolly slotted his shot into the bottom-left corner.

With Gerrard reduced to the role of spectator, Liverpool struggled in midfield, as Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson found it difficult to retain possession.

But for all their dominance, United failed to create any further clear-cut first-half opportunities following the opener and they should have been punished by Adam Lallana in the 35th minute.

The England man was teed up by international colleague Sturridge in the centre of the area but with the goal gaping, he could only turn his shot narrowly wide of David de Gea's post.

Gerrard was thrown into the fray in place of Lallana at the break, but he was soon making his way off the field in ignominy following a rush of blood.

He appeared to win the ball in the initial challenge with Herrera, but then stamped on the United man's leg, leaving Atkinson with little choice but to brandish a red card.

Visiting defender Phil Jones was then lucky to only see yellow for a rash challenge on Henderson, before Angel Di Maria escaped punishment for catching a high clearance on the touchline before the ball had gone out of play.

Liverpool's indignation was furthered when Mata left them with a mountain to climb, producing a stunning scissor-kick finish from Di Maria's lofted pass.

The hosts did rally, and they pulled one back in the 69th minute when De Gea allowed Sturridge's shot from Philippe Coutinho's pass to fly in at his near post.

There was to be no grandstand finish, though, with Rooney denied from the spot by a fine Mignolet stop to his right in injury time after Emre Can had brought down Daley Blind.

Martin Skrtel then caught De Gea with a stamp that sparked unsavoury scenes at the end of a disappointing day for Liverpool, but another memorable renewal of one of England's most famous fixtures.

Juventus 1-0 Genoa: Tevez edges Bianconeri towards Serie A title

    1126432_heroa.jpg

Carlos Tevez was the hero as his first half strike helped Juventus see off Genoa 1-0 on Sunday.

The Argentine, who notched a double to help dump Borussia Dortmund out of the Champions League in midweek, lit up the contest with a brilliant solo goal after 25 minutes.

It was not a flawless performance from the former Manchester City man, who saw a second-half penalty saved, but a third consecutive league win and a 17-point lead at the summit rarely appeared to be in doubt.

Roma, currently on a dismal run of form in second place, can close that substantial gap when they face Cesena on Sunday.

A slack pass from Leonardo Bonucci presented Niang with the opportunity to give Genoa a second-minute lead, but the forward curled narrowly wide from 20 yards.
Neither defence looked particularly assured during the opening exchanges and Facundo Roncaglia made a last-ditch block to deny Juventus striker Fernando Llorente.

Genoa felt they should have had a penalty in the 14th minute, but Diego Perotti was booked for simulation following a challenge from Claudio Marchisio.Juventus continued to struggle for fluency but a moment of magic from Tevez put them ahead.

The Argentina forward slipped past a pair of defenders on a typically bustling run before firing home an angled shot via the underside of the crossbar for his 16th Serie goal of the season.

The visitors' early verve disappeared and it was almost 2-0 on the stroke of half-time as Giorgio Chiellini struck the crossbar when Genoa failed to fully clear a corner.Mattia Perin was injured in the build-up to the Chiellini chance and was replaced by understudy Eugenio Lamanna soon after.

And, as he did after emerging from the bench against Roma in December, Lamanna thwarted the opposition from the penalty spot.

Roncaglia was penalised for a trip on Roberto Pereyra but Tevez failed to convert his 62nd minute spot kick as the keeper produced a diving save to keep his side in the game.

Genoa's best chance for a leveller came 10 minutes from time, as Andrea Barzagli cleared brilliantly to deny Perotti at the far post, but they could not find a way through, with Juventus continuing their march towards the title.

Hull City 2-3 Chelsea: Late Remy strike bails out Blues

    1126602_heroa.jpg

Loic Remy spared Thibaut Courtois' blushes by coming off the bench to score the winner as Chelsea beat Hull City 3-2 to move six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Chelsea raced into a two-goal lead at the KC Stadium on Sunday courtesy of classy finishes from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa inside nine minutes.

Jose Mourinho's men were far from their best, though, and Hull took advantage as Ahmed Elmohamady pulled a goal back, then Abel Hernandez pounced on a Thibaut Courtois mistake just 74 seconds later to slot in his first goal since October.

A stunning triple save from Courtois went someway to repaying his team-mates as the hosts continued to press forward.

But Remy had the final say with his first touch after replacing Costa, and it was a moment to forget for Allan McGregor, as the striker's tame shot squirmed through his legs and into the net.

Victory for the Blues ensured they head into the international break in command of the title race - they still have a game in hand over second-placed Manchester City - while Hull remain just three points above the relegation zone.

Hazard scored a stunning goal at Hull last season and he took less than two minutes to hit another sublime effort, latching onto Costa's lay-off and surging forward before letting fly with his left foot to find the far corner from 20 yards.

Hernandez was wasteful when one-on-one soon after, and Hull were punished in the ninth minute as Cesc Fabregas picked out Costa and the Spain striker cut in from the left before finishing inside the far post in measured style.

Hull retained a threat going forward, though, and they stunned Chelsea by scoring twice in little more than a minute to draw level.

Elmohamady gave Steve Bruce's men hope when he arrived at the back post to convert Andy Robertson's teasing cross after the left-back beat Ivanovic after 26 minutes.

And Hull fans had barely finished celebrating when Courtois inexplicably lost control of the ball to gift the grateful Hernandez a tap-in.

Perhaps with harsh words from Mourinho ringing in their ears, Chelsea made a bright start to the second half, with Fabregas shooting just wide following a slick move.

Courtois then redeemed himself by denying Elmohamady, Jake Livermore and Gaston Ramirez in quick succession, as Chelsea continued to look vulnerable at the back.

Costa, who moved level on 19 goals with Harry Kane in the race for the Premier League golden boot, was withdrawn clutching his hamstring 15 minutes from time but his replacement Remy earned his side all three points almost immediately.

Willian crossed for the former QPR man, whose left-footed effort should have been dealt with by McGregor but the Hull keeper allowed the ball to creep past him, keeping Bruce's side firmly in the battle at the bottom and tightening Chelsea's grip on top spot.

QPR 1-2 Everton: Lennon the hero as Rangers remain in trouble

    1126842_heroa.jpg

Aaron Lennon scored his first Everton goal as they rebounded from their Europa League disappointment to inflict another blow to QPR's Premier League survival hopes with a 2-1 win at Loftus Road.

A 5-2 defeat at Dynamo Kiev on Thursday saw Everton crash out 6-4 on aggregate at the last-16 stage, ensuring there will be no English representation in the Champions League or Europa League last eight.

However, Seamus Coleman's excellent driven effort put the visitors back on the winning trail and ahead by half-time on Sunday.

Substitute Eduardo Vargas lashed home a close-range equaliser in the 65th minute as struggling QPR looked to claim a crucial point, but Lennon placed home the winner with 13 minutes left to break the hosts' valiant resistance.

QPR will perhaps feel disappointed not to take something from the game after they competed well throughout, Junior Hoilett and substitute Adel Taarabt both rattling the crossbar in the second half.

But Everton, heavily criticised for their defensive showing in Kiev, looked far more assured at the back to see out a result that means Chris Ramsey's QPR remain four points adrift of safety with just eight matches remaining.

Everton headed to London just six points above the drop zone themselves, but their second consecutive league win leaves them 13th and has now eased any lingering relegation fears.

QPR enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, with Bobby Zamora - one of four changes from the 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace - causing problems with his physicality.

They failed to create clear-cut chances, though, and Everton took the lead with a fine team goal in the 18th minute.

Lennon laid Arouna Kone's cross from the left in to the path of Leon Osman and he rolled the ball out to Coleman, who hit a sweet first-time effort high into the left-hand corner.

Everton felt they should have had the chance to double their lead from the penalty spot when Joey Barton, back in QPR's XI after a three-match ban, appeared to block Darron Gibson's drive in the penalty area with his hand.

QPR remained a threat going forward and Zamora wasted a great opportunity when he failed to make clean contact with a header from Charlie Austin's fizzed cross.

They went even closer a minute after the break when Hoilett's fierce 25-yard effort crashed off the woodwork. Matt Phillips' header towards goal from the rebound caused confusion, but the winger was ruled offside before Zamora bundled in the loose ball.

Ramsey looked to change things by introducing Vargas for Hoilett on the hour, and the move paid dividends five minutes later.

Sandro and Austin caused panic in the Everton penalty area and Vargas pounced to lash home from inside the six-yard box for his second league goal of the campaign.

Parity lasted just 12 minutes, though, as Nedum Onuoha nipped in front of Kone to block Coleman's cross, only for the ball to fall kindly for Lennon and the winger coolly converted into the bottom left-hand corner.

QPR threw caution to the wind by bringing on the enigmatic Taarabt for the closing stages, and the Moroccan twice went agonisingly close to rescuing a point - first curling a shot narrowly wide of the right-hand post, before striking the crossbar in injury time.

Bayern Munich 0-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: Raffael double stuns champions

    1127312_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich lost Arjen Robben to injury as two goals from Raffael condemned them to a 2-0 defeat at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Despite dominating throughout, Bayern lacked fluency on Sunday after their top scorer's withdrawal, and two goals from Brazilian striker handed them a first loss at the Allianz Arena since April 2014.

Robben caught the eye during his time on the pitch, before a collision with Gladbach right-back Tony Jantschke resulted in him hobbling off just 24 minutes in to his comeback from a minor back problem.

And within a few minutes, Gladbach were ahead, as Manuel Neuer failed to keep out Raffael's effort. The visitors remained solid at the back after the break and they almost extended their lead when Andre Hahn struck the right-hand post 20 minutes from time.

Bayern failed to heed that warning, however, and Gladbach made sure of a famous win 13 minutes from time, Raffael netting again as Bayern suffered only their second defeat at the Allianz Arena in 41 Bundesliga matches.

The champions began the contest full of urgency, piling pressure on Gladbach from the start, with Robben looking particularly lively. The Dutch star was involved in the game's first real opportunity in the seventh minute, heading Juan Bernat's left-wing delivery straight at Yann Sommer.

Despite the home side's dominance, Gladbach's numbers at the back proved difficult to break down, while they also contained Robert Lewandowski to good effect.

However, the blow of seeing Robben forced off with an apparent hip injury was a pivotal one for Bayern, with Thomas Muller taking his place.

Within six minutes, they were trailing, as Raffael met Patrick Herrmann's precise cut-back with a low drive from 18 yards which Neuer inexplicably allowed to squirm over the goalline.

Having taken the lead, the visitors became even more compact at the back and, besides a Muller header that was played across goal and cleared by Martin Stranzl in the 42nd minute, Bayern crafted little before the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern, as Gladbach absorbed Bayern's pressure brilliantly, preventing Pep Guardiola's men from creating a single opportunity in the 15 minutes that followed the interval.Bayern's first chance of the second period arrived in the 63rd minute, as Muller met Rafinha's cross and sent a volley at Sommer.

Despite sitting back, Gladbach still looked a threat on the break and they almost scored a second in the 70th minute, but Hahn could only hit the post as he raced past Holger Badstuber.

They were not to be denied next time, though, as Christoph Kramer raided up the right flank and crossed into the centre, where Raffael was waiting to squeeze a first-time effort under Neuer, moving Lucien Favre's men up to third.

Barcelona 2-1 Real Madrid: Suarez seals the points in Clasico

    1129342_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez's second-half strike ensured Barcelona beat Real Madrid 2-1 at Camp Nou to go four points clear of their arch-rivals at the top of La Liga in a typically enthralling Clasico.

Suarez endured a miserable Barca debut when the Catalan giants were beaten 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu back in October, but gained revenge by scoring his first goal in the biggest fixture in club football on Sunday to secure three precious points.

Jeremy Mathieu's first Liga goal for Barca put them in front in the first half, but Cristiano Ronaldo rounded off a fine move to equalise with his 42nd goal of the season before half-time.

Gareth Bale – much maligned in the game's build-up - had a goal ruled out before the break, with Ronaldo just offside, and Suarez's seventh goal in as many games settled it to put Barca in command of the title race heading into the international break.

Defeat for Real will lead to further questions over Carlo Ancelotti's future, with reports in the Spanish media claiming the Italian's job would be under threat in the event of a loss.Barca have now won seven games in a row and their dreams of winning a famous treble are very much alive.

Familiar recent struggles in front of goal came back to haunt Real, though a highly charged atmosphere was almost silenced early on when Ronaldo's close-range volley struck the crossbar after Karim Benzema picked him out 11 minutes in.

Isco fired a shot narrowly wide from the edge of the penalty area as Barca were forced onto the back foot in a typically frantic start with so much at stake. But Real's failure to finish was punished as Barca went in front after 19 minutes.

Mathieu was the unlikely scorer, evading Sergio Ramos to head home Lionel Messi's inviting free-kick with only his second goal for the club.

An unmarked Neymar somehow failed to double their lead with a tame finish from inside the six-yard box and he was made to pay when Ronaldo equalised with a well-worked goal just after the half-hour.

Luka Modric played the ball forward for Benzema, whose clever first-time backheel allowed tne Portuguese attacker to surge ahead of Dani Alves and beat Claudio Bravo with a neat finish.Bale thought he had put Real in front, but Ronaldo was called offside when he nodded the ball on for the Wales forward to tap in.

The former Tottenham man ought to have made up for that disappointment, but fired wide after the ball fell kindly for him in the penalty area late in a first half in which Ronaldo was also booked for diving.Madrid continued where they left off after the break and Bravo did well to keep out Benzema's strike after the France striker again linked up well with Ronaldo.

Barca were back in front 11 minutes into the second half, though, with Ramos this time caught out by a ball over the top from Alves which sent Suarez clear and the Uruguay striker showed great control before guiding the ball into the far corner of the net with a fine finish. As Real frantically sought an equaliser, they were left exposed at the back – Neymar and Messi shooting off-target when well-placed.

A late charge from the visitors failed to materialise, Jordi Alba and Messi were denied by Iker Casillas in the closing stages as Barca attempted to kill the game off, but two goals proved to be enough to seal a potentially pivotal victory.

Sampdoria 1-0 Inter: Eder stunner fires hosts to victory

    1128712_heroa.jpg

Sampdoria's Eder completed a memorable weekend with the only goal of the game as he gave his side a 1-0 Serie A victory over Inter on Sunday.

The Brazilian-born forward was called into Antonio Conte's latest Italy squad on Saturday having gained citizenship, with his agent declaring the honour a "dream come true".And 24 hours later, he was celebrating again, as he fired home a stunning free-kick to settle matters at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

After Inter had dominated the opening 20 minutes of the second half, hitting the woodwork through Mauro Icardi, Eder thumped in from 25 yards, leaving Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic with no chance.

In doing so, he made amends for his sending off in the same fixture last season, when he was dismissed as Inter won 4-0, as well handing Sinisa Mihajlovic's side a fourth straight Serie A win.

Inter, meanwhile, are now winless in six matches across all competitions as Roberto Mancini - who enjoyed hero status during a 15-year stint as a player at Samp - saw his side fall to another defeat, three days after exiting the Europa League at the hands of Wolfsburg.

Sampdoria's Luis Muriel came into the game with three goals in five appearances since his arrival from Udinese, and he ought to have added to that tally in the 11th minute.

The Colombian turned away from Andrea Ranocchia with a superb piece of control only to blaze over the crossbar.Inter's response was swift, as Icardi headed Xherdan Shaqiri's cross off target from six yards.

Eder then brought a comfortable stop out of Handanovic with a strike from distance and also fired over midway through the half. The interval arrived without either goalkeeper having had to make a serious save, with Muriel and Icardi both shooting over in the latter stages of the half.

The visitors almost broke the deadlock in the opening minute of the second period when Icardi's curling effort struck the crossbar with Emiliano Viviano well beaten. The Samp goalkeeper got down smartly to keep out Fredy Guarin's shot three minutes later and, from the resulting corner, Lukas Podolski failed to get a telling touch on Shaqiri's centre.

Inter were soon left to rue their wastefulness when, in the 65th minute, Eder was teed up by Samuel Eto'o and Angelo Palombo before hitting a shot that swerved away from Handanovic and went in off the right-hand post.

And although the visitors pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages, the home side held on to secure three points and maintain their unbeaten home league record this season.

Subotic: Dortmund still aiming for Europe

    1125012_heroa.jpg

Neven Subotic is hopeful that Borussia Dortmund can catch the sides battling for Europe after their 3-2 win against Hannover on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp's men have turned their season around following a dreadful start to the Bundesliga campaign and now sit 10th in the table - five points behind the European qualifying spots.

A win against Hannover on Saturday helped Dortmund continue their recent revival, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang bagging a double at the Niedersachsenstadion, while Shinji Kagawa also scored.

Despite conceding twice to a side for whom Leonardo Bittencourt was sent off for two bookings in the second half, Subotic admitted Dortmund were happy to use the momentum from the win to chase sixth-place Augsburg.

"We were able to pull away a bit today from the teams below. Now we want to go for the place above us," he said after the 3-2 victory.

"We really wanted to take advantage after they went down to ten men and so made it 3-1. We also threatened a fourth, which would have been important for us, but again, we let an opponent come back into the game.

"Although they did well, we gifted them too many chances. We had a different idea of how to play against ten men, but we couldn't quite put it into practice on the field.

"Either way, the win is deserved. We had the better chances."

Menez: Celebration was aimed at media, not AC Milan fans

    1123362_heroa.jpg

Jeremy Menez has insisted he was not trying to criticise AC Milan fans with his goal celebration against Cagliari on Saturday, but was instead sending media critics a message.Thousands of Milan fans boycotted the Italian side's 3-1 Serie A win at home to relegation-threatened Cagliari in protest of a recent poor run of form.

But despite the empty seats and banners reading "Game over" and "Insert coin to save Milan", Menez has clarified that he celebrated one of his goals with a hand to his ear to hit back at criticism over his performances by the press.

"My gesture was not for the fans but for the media. They talk about me without knowing anything and I don't like that," Menez told Sky Sport Italia.

The Frenchman scored twice during the victory, including one from the penalty spot, as Philippe Mexes also got on the scoresheet while Diego Farias netted a consolation for the visitors.

Menez's double took him level with Carlos Tevez and Mauro Icardi in the Serie A scoring charts with 15 goals, but the former Paris Saint-Germain attacker says his primary focus is on working for the team."In my view our defeat to Fiorentina was a real shame and undeserved. Tonight we wanted to deliver a similar performance, but with a win at the end," he said.

"We all help each other and, if we continue like this, then we can do great things. There are 10 rounds to go, if we win two or three in a row then everything will change.

"I always give my all, but there are matches in which I don't score and still work hard for the team."
