Scotland 1-0 Northern Ireland: Berra the unlikely hero for hosts

    170494_heroa.jpg

Christophe Berra scored a late winner as Scotland prepared for a crucial Euro 2016 qualifier with a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland at Hampden Park on Wednesday.

Both teams have performed well in qualification so far; Scotland sit third in Group D with seven points going into Sunday's clash with Gibraltar while Northern Ireland are second in Group F with three wins from four ahead of a home game against Finland.

It was the hosts who eventually claimed a deserved triumph in Glasgow, edging a contest that provided little in terms of entertainment.

Manchester United's Jonny Evans captained Northern Ireland - in his first appearance since receiving a six-match ban for spitting at Newcastle United's Papiss Cisse - and it was his defence that received the sterner test as Scotland created the better opportunities during a dour affair.

Indeed, Scotland - who beat the Republic of Ireland in their last qualifier in November - perhaps would have claimed a more comfortable win had they not found Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern in good form.

McGovern appeared equal to everything thrown at him by Gordon Strachan's side, but five minutes from time Berra settled things with a header into the bottom-right corner.

Scotland started brightly and would have taken the lead in the fourth minute if not for the reflexes of McGovern.

The Hamilton Academical goalkeeper produced a low stop down to his right to deny Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher following good work from Ikechi Anya.

Anya was Scotland's most dangerous player in the first half and drew another save from McGovern before then firing wide following a quick counter-attack.

The hosts continued to dictate matters but found McGovern in good form, Fletcher again thwarted after a precise Shaun Maloney pass.

There was no let-up in the pressure from Scotland upon the restart but they also remained profligate, with substitute Steven Naismith heading over from Craig Forsyth's left-wing cross.

Jordan Rhodes was thrown on for Scotland in the 63rd minute for his first international appearance since 2013.

Forward Josh Magennis then flashed an effort wide in a rare chance for Northern Ireland, but they were on the back foot for the majority of the encounter and McGovern was forced into action again as Naismith headed straight at him from a corner.

Scotland's chance of victory appeared to have passed, yet Berra took advantage of some poor defending to grab a late winner.

The centre-back met a corner from Matt Ritchie - making his first visit to Scotland after receiving a maiden call-up from Strachan - with a precise header that defender Lee Hodson failed to clear off the line as the hosts' pressure finally told.

Germany 2-2 Australia: Podolski rescues draw for World champions

    1142342_heroa.jpg

Lukas Podolski showed no sign of rustiness on Wednesday as he came off the bench to rescue a 2-2 draw for Germany against Australia in Kaiserslautern.

The Inter striker has not enjoyed the most prosperous of starts to life at San Siro, although Germany's general manager Oliver Bierhoff backed Podolski to continue to play a part for the national side this week. And the Arsenal loanee once again showed his quality to steer home a cross from fellow substitute Andre Schurrle nine minutes from time.

Joachim Low started Holger Badstuber and Ilkay Gundogan following their lengthy injury lay-offs, but the world champions delivered a largely lacklustre performance, despite taking the lead after 17 minutes through Marco Reus.

James Troisi's header deservedly brought Australia level five minutes prior to half-time and visiting captain Mile Jedinak then turned the game on its head with a well-taken free-kick in the 50th minute.

The late introductions of Podolski and Schurrle proved crucial as they combined to spare Germany defeat in their first outing of 2015, as Low left the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng on the bench ahead of Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia.

Australia handed a debut to Luke DeVere and started brightly in their first match since being crowned Asian champions, with Nathan Burns and Jason Davidson threatening Low's three-man defence early on.

Badstuber almost marked his first Germany appearance since 2012 in dream fashion when he steered an effort round Mat Ryan's left-hand post.Chances then came the way of Mathew Leckie and Davidson before Reus had the ball in the net only for it to be disallowed for offside.Less than a minute later, Reus did beat the trap to convert Sami Khedira's pinpoint cross.

The Borussia Dortmund forward should have doubled Germany's advantage when he seized on a sloppy pass from Jedinak, only to shoot wide, and the world champions were made to pay as they switched off at a throw-in, allowing Burns to find a pocket of space and cross for Troisi. The Zulte Waregem forward planted a header past Ron-Robert Zieler - picked ahead of the injured Manuel Neuer - to send the sides in level at the break.

Jedinak put Australia ahead just five minutes into the second half as Zieler failed to keep out a curling free-kick, despite getting a hand to the ball.Karim Bellarabi stung Ryan's palms with a drive from outside the area as Germany sought to get back into the game, although it was Australia who looked more threatening as Leckie struck the post following a quick counter.

With time running out, Podolski made the most of a rare chance for the hosts as he steered home Schurrle's pass to register his first goal of the year and move ahead of Rudi Voller and Jurgen Klinsmann in Germany's all-time scoring charts.

Low will be eager for a response when his side return to qualifying action in Tbilisi on Sunday, although they came close to snatching victory against Ange Postecoglou's men when Podolski burst clear only to prod wide with the outside of his boot.

Denmark 3-2 USA: Bendtner hat-trick wins it for the Danes

    1142242_heroa.jpg

Nicklas Bendtner netted his first international hat-trick as Denmark twice came from behind to beat the United States 3-2 in Aarhus on Wednesday.

Having initially brought the hosts level in the first half, Bendtner stole the headlines when he struck twice in the closing minutes to seal a hard-earned victory, giving captain Christian Eriksen something to celebrate on his 50th international appearance.Jozy Altidore had earlier given the US the lead in the first half, but the Bendtner show began 12 minutes before the break when he converted from close range.

Despite controlling the game for long spells, Morten Olsen's side were punished again just after the hour mark, as Aron Johannsson tapped home. However, it was not enough as Bendtner scored a late brace to deny USA a win that would have boosted their Concacaf Gold Cup preparations.

With Eriksen leading Denmark on his landmark appearance in the absence of Daniel Agger, the hosts made a promising start, with Lasse Vibe particularly impressive down the right.

The Gothenburg forward delivered two threatening crosses into the USA penalty area early on, but John Brooks and Michael Orozco were on hand to clear the danger.

Denmark's control of proceedings quickly disappeared in the 19th minute, though, as a swift attack from the visitors saw Altidore net his 27th international goal.
Having muscled his way past Daniel Wass and Simon Kjaer to meet Timothy Chandler's long diagonal cross, the Toronto striker thumped a left-foot volley beyond Stephan Andersen from a tight angle.

Three minutes after the half hour, Denmark pegged the visitors back with a well-worked move, Bendtner converting from close range after Vibe had flicked on Wass' low cross.Vibe was at the heart of all the positive play from the hosts in the opening 45 minutes, and they should have gone into the break ahead as he put a low cross into the path of Bendtner, but the Wolfsburg striker was unable to double his tally.

Denmark kept up their fast pace after the restart and saw another two chances go begging before the hour – Bendtner and Vibe both volleying wide from inside the penalty area when well placed.

In an almost carbon copy of the first half, Denmark were then made to pay for their profligacy as USA took the lead for a second time through Johannsson, the 24-year-old tapping home Altidore's pass after 66 minutes.

That appeared likely to be enough as Johannsson's goal looked decisive, but with time running out Bendtner returned to fire low past Nick Rimando to level things for a second time.

And the former Arsenal striker was not finished there, as deep into stoppage time he expertly converted a volley from 15 yards into the bottom corner to snatch victory for the Danes.

There was still time for Brooks to waste a glorious chance to earn a draw with a late header when unmarked, the Hertha Berlin defender inexplicably nodding wide having lost his covering defender.

Nigeria 0-1 Uganda: Late winner sours Enyeama landmark

    1141982_heroa.jpg

Vincent Enyeama's 100th Nigeria appearance proved an unhappy one for the goalkeeper as Uganda picked up a 1-0 friendly win at the Akwa Ibom Stadium.
Farouq Miya scored the winner nine minutes from time in Wednesday's friendly to dampen the occasion for Enyeama - who joined Joseph Yobo in securing 100 caps for Nigeria.

Having made a slow start to Wednesday's clash, the Super Eagles gradually got into gear prior to the break as Ogenyi Onazi and Ahmed Musa threatened the visitors.Musa felt he should have had a penalty shortly before the interval when he was brought down by Dennis Onyango.

Referee William Agbovi waved away appeals and did so again in the second half when FC Koln forward Anthony Ujah tumbled under a challenge from Shafiq Bakaki.Uganda finished with a flourish, with Geofrey Massa's trickery giving Nigeria a warning only for Nelson Ogbonanya to miss the target.

Miya then popped up with the decisive goal after patient build-up play, Enyeama unable to prevent his team falling behind despite getting a hand to the shot.

Swaziland 1-3 South Africa: Bafana Bafana back to winning ways

    1141892_heroa.jpg

Two goals in as many second-half minutes helped seal a 3-1 friendly win over Swaziland for South Africa on Wednesday.

The result marked only the second win of 2015 for South Africa, who exited the Africa Cup of Nations in the group stage with just a point to their name. But they had little difficulty in disposing of Swaziland, who Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Mashaba managed between 2008 and 2010. Defender Thulani Hlatshwayo opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a header from a free-kick.

Thabo Mnyamane doubled the advantage a minute later with a goal on his debut following a fine pass from Thulani Serero.

Felix Badenhorst pulled one back in the 65th minute, only for midfielder Mandla Masango to make sure of victory for the visitors four mintues from time.

    Varane: Ronaldo is an example

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-champions-league-10042015_a6fimd27t3d61mbpndm3qzeh0.jpg

Raphael Varane has hailed Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo as an 'example to follow'.

The France international featured briefly in the latter stages of his side's 2-1 Clasico defeat to Barcelona on Sunday, a game that saw Ronaldo open the scoring.

And although LFP chief Javier Tebas has called for the Portuguese to be banned or fined for his celebration of that goal, Varane highlighted the qualities he brings to Madrid as both a team-mate and a role model.

Speaking to La Voix du Nord, he said: "This is a superstar. But also a very professional guy; always listen to your body to be on top physically.

"This is an outstanding competitor, always 200 per cent, an example to follow in everyday life."

Varane joined los Blancos in 2011, intially struggling to break into the first team before a breakout year in 2012-13. Last season saw his appearances scaled back under Carlo Ancelotti but he has made 34 first-team appearances during the current campaign.

And although the 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea this summer he says he is enjoying the challenge of making his mark at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He added: "I feel progress this season, including going through difficult times. This is where we learn the most.

"I turned a corner mentally. I can progress in a lot of areas, but what I would like is to impose my mark in the team.

"It's a goal that I try to move forward. When you are at Real, it's a challenge every day. I'm like that, I need these high goals to keep moving forward."

    Vermaelen returns to Barcelona training

    thomasvermaelen-cropped_nqnl33txu4cz1ngwg1m0t8h16.jpg

Thomas Vermaelen has trained with Barcelona for the first time since undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury in December.

The Belgium defender has been plagued by injuries since arriving from Arsenal in August and is yet to make an appearance for his new club, but participated in part of a session on Wednesday morning.

Luis Enrique had just nine first-team players at his disposal due to international call-ups, with 'B' team goalkeeper Adrian Ortola also joining the group.

Martin Montoya returned to the fold after sitting out Tuesday's session but Dani Alves could only train separately.

Vermaelen arrived at Camp Nou with a hamstring problem sustained at the World Cup, but made a brief return to training in September.

The 29-year-old looked set to to make his first-team bow later that month but continued to suffer setbacks and at the end of November discovered he would need surgery.

Hannover captain Stindl agrees Borussia Monchengladbach deal

    larsstindl-cropped_9qplazfuwh631elcqnh1aaiah.jpg

Hannover captain Lars Stindl has confirmed he has agreed a deal to join Bundesliga rivals Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old midfielder will sign a five-year deal at Borussia Park after a reported €3 million release clause in his contract was activated.

Stindl - who took his league tally for the season to six with two against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday - has impressed for Hannover in 2014-15 but the club sit 14th in the German top flight.

"After five years in the jersey of Hannover, after the season I want to break new ground," Stindl wrote on Twitter.

"At Borussia I would like to take the next step in my development."

Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl added: "We faced strong competition in our efforts to sign Lars Stindl and we are delighted that he has chosen us.

"He is a midfielder who has been used in several positions and has shown as captain of Hannover 96 that he can handle responsibility with his experience."

Diego Costa: English defences try to kick me out of the game

    diego-costa-premier-league-chelsea-v-southampton-150315_bdd4r7hw2qp14k81avuc5hxu.jpg

Chelsea striker Diego Costa says that he has had to rise above provocation from Premier League defences.

In his first season at Stamford Bridge, the Spain international has already scored 19 top-flight goals, adapting quickly to the physical challenge of the division.

Costa has been involved in his fair share of scrapes with the opposition, his uncompromising style often drawing criticism, but he argues that defenders give as good as they get.

"They're no less dirty than the defences in Spain but I'm not complaining," he told Marca of his opponents in England. "They go in strongly but the referees won't give it as a foul – in Spain, they would.

"Some try to take me out of the game but, each time, I control myself more and focus on my own game."

Costa netted his 20th goal of the season in all competitions against Hull City on Sunday but will miss Spain’s games against Ukraine and Netherlands after suffering a hamstring injury at the KC Stadium.

Ozil: I can win the Ballon d'Or at Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has his eyes on the Ballon d'Or.

The Gunners star, who helped Germany to World Cup glory last summer, is "convinced" that he has what it takes to become the best player in the world.

While Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have divided the award between them over the last seven years, Ozil feels that he is in a good position to win the game's biggest individual prize.

"If I continue to develop well and stay healthy, I would like, in the next few years, to hold the Ballon d'Or in my hands," he told Sport Bild.

"I am convinced that it can happen.

"I'm feeling very positive. I'm a world champion and I play at a top club in the Premier League.

"There is much more of a physical test here than there is in Spain or in the Bundesliga – I constantly have bruises but that makes me harder. I feel physically better than ever."

'No one can doubt him' - Spain rally behind Casillas

    iker-casillas-real-madrid-levante-la-liga_ge454z3h7q701v8x3suwy3ptj.jpg

Spain new boys Juanmi and Vitolo are the latest Roja figures to jump to the defence of under-fire goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

The Real Madrid star, who is captain of the Spanish national team as well as los Blancos, has faced heavy criticism in the past couple of seasons and was on the losing side in Sunday's Clasico against Barcelona.

However Gerard Pique, a team-mate with Spain since 2009, came out in support of Casillas in the build-up to their Euro 2016 qualifier against Ukraine and friendly against the Netherlands.

And Vitolo, Sevilla's in-form winger, said: "No one can doubt Casillas. He is the captain of this team that has won a World Cup and two European Championships.

"Maybe your club may be going through bad times, but I do not doubt him."

Juanmi, another uncapped inclusion in Vicente del Bosque's squad (alongside Vitolo and Sergio Asenjo), also offered words of support for Casillas.

"Iker is an example," he said. "He has given a lot to this team. With him there are these titles. He is a 10 as a person and trains at 100 per cent."

Casillas has 160 caps for Spain, winning the World Cup in 2010 and two European Championships either side of the triumph in South Africa.

Lippi: I see myself in Allegri

    massimiliano-allegri-juventus_ptywangzvmnu1ir097jwhmd0e.jpg

Former Juventus and Italy coach Marcello Lippi says he sees himself in current Bianconeri boss Max Allegri.

The 47-year-old’s appointment in Turin last summer came under scrutiny following a mixed spell in charge of Milan, but Juve sit top of Serie A and defeated Borussia Dortmund to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Lippi, who coached Juventus to five league titles, praised Allegri for the way he has gradually imposed his ideas since replacing the popular Antonio Conte.

“I see myself in him,” Lippi told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He came to Juve more or less at the same age I did, he has the same concreteness I do, and he has the same drive to make the team more modern. We have points in common.

“You can see his intelligence - he came in on tip-toe, in an environment where a certain type of football was being played, without rocking the team's certainties.

“Then, with slightly different ideas, he gradually gave his own identity to the team.

“As for my comments about Allegri not having Conte's ‘competitive fury’, it was not a comparison in terms of quality. I just wanted to highlight certain differences in their approach to football.”

Lippi believes that Juventus will have a chance of springing a surprise and winning the Champions League if they can navigate a last-eight tie against Monaco.

“The draw can be helpful,” he added. “Think of Conte's Juve, and imagine what could have happened if they hadn't drawn Bayern [Munich].

“Monaco should be treated with respect, certainly, but they are not Barcelona. And once you're in the semi-finals...

“I remember my Italy team [at the 2006 World Cup]. We were not the favourites, but one victory after the other we made it to the end, until our rivals looked at us with new eyes. Everything can happen.

“These are signs of rebirth in Italy. Juventus are developing well, and after having imposed themselves in Serie A they can gain a European dimension, pushing the whole movement forward.”

The 66-year-old also joined in the praise of star midfielder Paul Pogba, but did point out that the Frenchman is not the finished product yet.

“I think Pogba is potentially immense,” Lippi said. “He just has to avoid certain attitudes.

“He should cut down on some of his creative plays, or at least do them as close as possible to the adversary's goal.”

Skrtel loses appeal over three-game stamp ban

    1137352_heroa.jpg

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has lost his appeal against a three-match suspension from the Football Association.

The centre-back had denied a charge of violent conduct after his clash with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea late in the Reds' 2-1 Premier League defeat on Sunday.

However, an independent FA disciplinary panel has upheld the charge and Skrtel will now miss Premier League games against Arsenal and Newcastle as well as Liverpool's FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers.

With the Slovakia international suspended, Brendan Rodgers could look to bring in Kolo Toure to start against his former club, whilst Steven Gerrard will also be suspended for the Reds' trip to the Emirates Stadium after his red card against United.

Earlier on Wednesday, Skrtel appeared to react to the ban with an Instagram post in which he seemed to imply that those involved in the decision were clowns.

Khedira: It will be hard to leave Real Madrid

    sami-khedira-real-madrid-100315_1dayz5lij7zda100vyir22ale0.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has all but confirmed his departure from the Spanish club this summer by vowing to “give everything” until the expiry of his contract.

The Germany international has been linked with a return to the Bundesliga when his current deal runs out at the end of the season, with Bayern Munich reportedly interested and Schalke confirming talks have taken place.

Khedira has lost his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s central midfield to Toni Kroos and Luka Modric having struggled with injury in 2014-15, making just 11 La Liga appearances.

“I love Real Madrid, it will be hard to leave this club,” Khedira said according to Marca.

“I will give everything for this shirt until the last day of my contract, there should be no doubt about that.”

The 27-year-old last played for Madrid in their 4-3 defeat to Schalke in the Champions League, and has not featured in a league fixture since February 7.

Morata: I had no relationship with Ancelotti at Real Madrid

    alvaro-morata-cesena-juventus-serie-a_18f84cg682l3y1v65hvjm8978f.jpg

Juventus striker Alvaro Morata has lambasted Carlo Ancelotti for his treatment at Real Madrid last season.

The 22-year-old left the Santiago Bernabeu last summer after becoming frustrated with a lack of minutes in Spain and pins his departure to Serie A on his relationship with Ancelotti.

“I do not understand what happened – I went from playing well to being sat on the bench,” Morata told Onda Cero. “I wasn't asking to be in every starting line-up, but I wanted better treatment.

“I barely had any relationship with Ancelotti. Massimiliano Allegri, for better or worse, is very aware of my presence within the squad.”

After a slow start to his Juventus career broken up by injury, Morata is now making his mark for Allegri's side and has earned a call-up to the latest Spain squad – which he revealed was one of his primary reasons for leaving Madrid.

“I appreciate the recognition from Spain now that I've left the country,” the forward added. “When one packs up from their homeland they mature in every way.

“When I left Madrid, one of my main aims was to get into the national team and some people thought I was crazy.

“Being here with the Spain squad is just unbelievable. In the past I was celebrating the success of la Roja and now I'm playing with them.

“I've been dreaming about scoring my first goal for my country but it's not an obsession.”

Morata has played twice for his country's senior team, having made his debut last November, and could play a part in their Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Ukraine on Friday.

Juventus cannot keep Pogba if he wants to go - Marotta

    paul-pogba-juventus-sassuolo-serie-a_3uuza59zggoh1v9pt23uiaxsf.jpg

Juventus chief Giuseppe Marotta does not think the club can keep hold of in-demand midfielder Paul Pogba if he decides he would rather play elsewhere this summer.

The Frenchman has been linked with an array of wealthy clubs over the past few months, including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, and there have been suggestions he could cost as much as €100 million.

Although Marotta insists that Pogba has so far shown no desire to jump ship from the Scudetto holders, he thinks it will be impossible to keep him in Turin if he starts to pine for a new challenge.

“Pogba is the protagonist of his own destiny and if he decides to leave then we can't stop him,” the Bianconeri chief told Corriere della Sera.

“Pogba has not indicated a willingness to leave, though. The problem will come when the player is offered a contract that is two or three times what he already earns. We're talking in the tens of millions per year.”Marotta also used Pogba as an example of how Juventus have scouted the best and brightest in world football to secure three successive Serie A titles.

“Our appeal has changed a lot,” he added. “Before it was difficult to encourage players to come, for instance Antonio Di Natale refused to join us years ago.
“Now, however, there is a race to come to us, and I'm talking about a race from players who are all-the-rage, the best in the world.“Pogba and Carlos Tevez are two examples of our scouting system working wonders. Our knowledge of top young players is excellent, as is our awareness of established players who might want to join us.”

Juve, coached by Massimiliano Allegri, are 14 points clear in Serie A.

'Ronaldo must face ban or fine for Clasico celebration'

Cristiano Ronaldo's provocative celebration in the Clasico “must” see him face a fine or suspension, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas.

The Real Madrid forward taunted the Camp Nou crowd with a 'calm down' gesture after scoring the equaliser in Sunday's clash with Barcelona, although Jeremy Mathieu's opener was eventually added to by Luis Suarez.

The LFP chief is adamant players should not bate opposition fans in the way that Ronaldo did and says he will push for the Portugal international to be sanctioned.
"We have to be careful with provocative gestures by a player when he scores a goal or with any other provocation or conduct that could incite violence among spectators,” Tebas told reporters.“It must be sanctioned, from a fine up to a suspension. We will look into it."

If the LFP decide to suspend Ronaldo for one match then he will be absent for their first clash after the international break at home to Granada, though a harsher ban could see him miss games with Rayo Vallecano and Eibar.

In addition to criticising Ronaldo, Tebas also questioned Real Madrid's reluctance to allow the Copa del Rey final between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona to be played at the Santiago Bernabeu later this season.

“I wish it were the Bernabeu,” he added. “However, it is the decision of the club and we must respect their decision not to allow it, for whatever reason.”Real Madrid were eliminated from the Copa del Rey at the last-16 stage by Atletico, who were subsequently dumped out of the competition by Barca in the quarter-finals.

Fellaini: 'Strict' Van Gaal is welcome after nightmare season

Marouane Fellaini insists Manchester United needed Louis van Gaal’s “very strict” approach after their nightmare season under David Moyes.

United won the Premier League in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in 2012-13 but slipped to seventh after the former Everton manager replaced the Scot, with Moyes sacked just nine months into his reign.

Fellaini became a pariah during United’s campaign, having been signed for £27.5 million in the summer of 2013, but has grown to be a key player under Van Gaal’s management, and he believes the Dutchman’s no-nonsense style has been good for the club, as they currently sit in fourth place in the Premier League.

“The coach is very strict, but that’s good. We needed such a coach,” Fellaini is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“Last season, we had a bad season. We even missed European qualification. We needed a coach who would put some players’ feet back on the ground.

“If he says something, you should do it. Otherwise you’ll fly out of it [the team].

“If he has to take you off the pitch when the game hasn’t been going on for more than 30 minutes, he’ll do it. Or during half-time. Fortunately, it hasn’t happened to me yet.”

Fellaini also insists he never doubted his own ability during his hardships under Moyes, and says that Van Gaal has simply given him a platform to thrive.

“He [Van Gaal] told me, ‘Prove yourself and we’ll see’. Now they are counting on me,” he added.

“There were never any real doubts. I was injured at the beginning of the season and then returned. The coach gave me confidence and I proved myself in a few matches.

“After that, I was injured and I got sick. For three weeks I was on antibiotics. It took a while, but now I can finally enjoy things."
