Kovacic to Liverpool is impossible, he'll stay at Inter - agent

    mateo-kovacic-inter-stjarnan-europa-league_1ngb9y0627zjs1ec7xdcque4g6.jpg

Mateo Kovacic will not be joining Liverpool from Inter, according to his agent.

The Croatia international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks, with reports suggesting that scouts had watched the 20-year-old in action with a view to a €30 million summer bid.

However, Kovacic’s representative, Nikky Vuksan, has now moved to quash any speculation and insists the midfielder will remain at San Siro.

“It is not going to happen. Mateo extended his contract with Inter in January. Could it be that clubs are negotiating? No, that is not possible without Mateo and me knowing about it,” he told Vecernji list .

“Also, I have a player at Liverpool, Dejan Lovren, so I would know about it. Both the English and Italian media speculate and find new clubs that want Kovacic every week. He’ll stay at Inter.

“Also, if there was something going on, believe me journalists would be the last to find out.”

Kovacic has scored eight goals in 34 appearances in all competitions for Inter this season.

Xavi is Spain's best ever - Busquets

    sergio-busquets-barcelona_o98fwhxzx1u21d8qumvs363qw.jpg

Xavi is the best Spain player of all time, according to team-mate Sergio Busquets.
The midfielder has been a pivotal part of the dominant Spain and Barcelona sides over the course of the last decade, winning a host of domestic, continental and world titles, including the World Cup, two European Championships, three Champions Leagues and two Club World Cups.

The 35-year-old, who is reportedly close to a move to Al-Sadd, retired from international football after Spain's elimination from the group stages of the 2014 World Cup and Busquets says his absence in the team can be felt.

"Truth to be told, yes, it does feel very strange to be in the Spain set-up without Xavi," he told Pelayo. "Ever since I broke through for Barca and Spain he's always been around. We've always had a great relationship and he's always set an example in every way, when it comes to camaraderie, how much help he's given me and, above all, in footballing terms.

"In my book, he's the best Spanish player of all time."Xabi Alonso and Carles Puyol have also brought an end to their Spain careers, but Busquets believes the team still have a bright future, despite some unconvincing recent performances.

"There are some great players from a good generation, and here's hoping it all comes together so that we can win trophies again and get back to the top," he said. The 26-year-old is currently wearing the No.5 jersey for Barcelona, having taken the shirt from Puyol, and he revealed that it was the former defender who told him to select it.

"I got on really well with Puyol and we had a chat in which he told me he'd like me to wear his number. It was flattering for me to hear that from someone like Puyol, considering his qualities both as a person and as a player."

Low: I don't care how Germany win

    joachim-low-spain-germany-international-friendly-11182014_jy319i5thhke1wliz62h383g9.jpg

Germany coach Joachim Low says he does not care about the scoreline in Sunday's game against Georgia, as long as his side win.

The world champions have struggled since winning last year's World Cup in Brazil, losing a Euro 2016 qualifier to Poland, drawing at home to Ireland and labouring to overcome Scotland.

They drew 2-2 in a friendly with Australia on Wednesday and travel to Tbilisi this weekend and Low is focused on putting the poor results of late behind them to ensure they do not fall further behind Poland in Group D."For us the three points are important, the scoreline does not matter," he told reporters.

"So first we have to wrestle the team to its knees and that's not easy. For Georgia, it's the game of the year, maybe even the decade, against the current world champions."The spectators will support the team. I expect a cauldron which we will have to withstand. The position is clear: we're lacking points in qualification.

"Now we have to take three points. It's an important game because we're falling behind the group. But I am convinced that we are in a position to win the game."
Low also confirmed that Bastian Schweinsteiger will make his first start for Germany since succeeding Philipp Lahm as captain following the World Cup triumph.

"I deliberately look him out of the XI against Australia. The line-up will be completely attacking."

Van der Vaart set to leave Hamburg

    rafael-van-der-vaart-cropped_53zw7udmryhc18kimx8j1255g.jpg

Hamburg CEO Dietmar Beiersdorfer has revealed that club captain Rafael van der Vaart will depart when his current deal runs out in June.

The attacking midfielder, who has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer, is a free agent in June and Beiersdorfer has intimated that the 32-year-old will not be extending his stay at the Bundesliga club.

Furthermore, Marcell Jansen will also leave HSV come June, while they have yet to make a decision about the futures of Heiko Westermann and Slobodan Rajkovic at the Imtech Arena. "We have already talked with Van der Vaart, Jansen, Westermann and Rajkovic about our planning," Beiersdorfer told the club's official website.

"Rafael and Marcell know that we will not open talks about a contract extension with them."Regarding Heiko and Slobodan, we have postponed the decision and communicated it to the players as well."

Van der Vaart, who Beiersdorfer has hinted could be offered a possible future coaching role at Hamburg, is in his second spell at the club, having rejoined from Tottenham in August 2012.

Sporting Kansas City earlier this month confirmed an interest in signing Van der Vaart, while he has also been linked with a return to his boyhood club Ajax.

Hodgson: Kane won’t buckle under the pressure

    harry-kane-euro-2016-qualifying-england-v-lithuania-270315_1o56llc0r12d112z0980z3qunm.jpg

England manager Roy Hodgson says that he was thrilled to watch Harry Kane score on his debut, backing the Tottenham striker to handle the pressure after a stunning season.

The 21-year-old came on as a second-half substitute and scored within two minutes of his arrival on the pitch as the Three Lions secured a 4-0 win over Lithuania at Wembley.

The win maintains England's 100 per cent record in Euro 2016 qualifying and Hodgson says that Kane will be an important part of his country’s future.

"I'm very pleased with tonight’s performance and delighted for Harry Kane," he told reporters.

"There has been a lot of talk about him. It's been a great week for him, we're delighted to have him and let's hope it's the start of a long career for him.

"I think he will put pressure on himself because he's a good professional. I don't think he will buckle under pressure.

"The media spotlight has been enormous and he will have to accept it will do better. It's important we don't build him up to knock him down but build him up to be an important part of our future."

Hodgson confirmed after the game that England will be withouth Raheem Sterling and Danny Welbeck for the trip to Italy, meaning that Kane could get his first senior start in Turin.

"Obviously his chances to start against Italy get bigger all the time; we're losing all these players," added the manager.

"I haven't got front players coming out of a hat but we will wait and see."

:cool:Ibrahimovic was built for Man United, claims Schmeichel

    1066452_heroa.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic bears all the hallmarks of Eric Cantona and was built to play for Manchester United, according to former Old Trafford great Peter Schmeichel.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker has so far rejected the temptation to ply his trade in the Premier League despite several lucrative offers.

The 33-year-old recently voiced his displeasure at the standard of refereeing in France and Schmeichel believes that his former side should pounce, should the Sweden international opt to seek a new challenge in the summer.

"What Zlatan does with PSG is quite incredible," he told L'Equipe. "He gives PSG so much credibility and visibility. There we rumors last summer sending him to Manchester United. I said back then that he was built to play for United."

Schmeichel spent the first half of his United career playing alongside the charismatic Cantona and believes that Ibrahimovic, like the Frenchman, would revel in the unique opportunity that playing at Old Trafford provides.

"Why was Cantona so strong when I was there and not that strong in Leeds or France? Because it's Manchester United," he added.

"There's this freedom given to players but also responsibilities. We don't care what you like or who you are, we care about what you do on the pitch and the influence you have on the team. If you don't respect that, you leave.

"You can have the personality you want. Beckham, Cantona, they blossomed at Manchester United. Thousands of players tried to be Beckham or Cantona but failed because they didn't have the personality."

he Spain full-back picked up an injury during Friday's 1-0 victory over Ukraine on Friday and tests have revealed the extent of the injuryBarcelona have confirmed that Jordi Alba will be out for around 10 days with an injury sustained in Spain's 1-0 win over Ukraine on Friday.

The former Valencia man was withdrawn with 11 minutes remaining in Seville with a suspected hamstring injury and promptly returned to the club to determine the extent of the injury.

Subsequent examinations have confirmed that he has sustained a grade one injury to his right hamstring , meaning he is likely to miss next weekend's trip to Celta Vigo.

"Tests performed by the FC Barcelona Medical Services on Saturday morning has revealed that Jordi Alba has a grade one injury to the adductor muscle in his right leg," a club statement read.

"He was substituted after feeling pain during a run down the left wing."
Spain boss Vicente del Bosque had confirmed after the match that Alba would miss Tuesday's clash with Netherlands in Amsterdam

Iniesta & Isco can play together, says Cazorla

    taras-stepanenko-isco-alarcon-euro-2016-qualifying-spain-v-ukraine_ukwdfz61xk8j1q02f28pxv5qv.jpg

Spain midfielder Santi Cazorla has insisted that Isco and Andres Iniesta can both function in the same team.

The Real Madrid and Barcelona stars both put in a strong performance in Friday's 1-0 win over Ukraine in Euro 2016 qualification, which saw Alvaro Morata give the 2010 world champions three points.

Cazorla started the game on the bench, replacing Iniesta, and feels that the two attack-minded playmaker showed that they can work together well.

"I don't know who said that Iniesta and Isco can't play together," he told Goal.
"Talking about talented players, we must play with all of them because it's always the best option. They are extraordinary players."It's a pleasure to see them playing together."

Isco is one of the next generation of Spain players, along with match-winner Morata and Malaga forward Juanmi, who was an unused substitute, and the Arsenal star believes his country has a bright future.

"Morata will gain confidence. There are big expectations around him and young players such as Juanmi. His first goal is good for him."You see new players in our national team and all are doing big things with their clubs. They're starting an exciting career here. Spain's future is assured.

"We won three really important points for reaching the Euros. It was a key victory. In some moments we played really well but had others with more problems.
"We must keep working to improve."

Spain have won four of their five Euro 2016 qualifiers and sit second in Group C behind Slovakia.

'Mario Gotze wanted my shirt' – little Gibraltar think big after brush with champions

    1151382_heroa.jpg

One minute before half-time in Germany’s fourth game of Euro 2016 qualifying the world’s best goalkeeper made a brilliant save to deny Gibraltar’s Liam Walker a spectacular goal.

It was a superb, quick-thinking effort by Walker, the only full-timer in the Gibraltar League. He hit a high, swerving left-foot half-volley on the run from 30 yards out. World Cup winner Manuel Neuer, who came third in the Fifa Ballon d’Or in January, just about scrambled it away for a corner.

Mario Gotze, scorer of the deciding goal in the World Cup final, was so impressed by the Lincoln Red Imps attacking midfielder that he swapped shirts with Walker – at half-time.

“He must have liked it,” Walker told Goal at a club training session in Gibraltar before the national team started preparations for their next qualifier in Scotland on Sunday. “He told one of the team assistants outside the dressing room that he wanted to swap shirts, so I got Gotze’s at half-time and Karim Bellarabi’s at the end.

“The shot was a highlight, because Neuer only just stopped it and he was voted third best player in the world last year. But my best memory was the experience of just being in Nuremburg for that game, from the moment we were standing in the tunnel alongside the best team in the world.”

His team-mates all agree, even though they lost 4-0. Forward Kyle Casciaro has several pictures of the stadium and crowd on his phone and used one to explain the impact that night had on him.

“Look at that,” he said, pointing out a shot of the German fans spelling out the word ‘Mannschaft’ as the teams walked out. “We waited a long time for the chance to play games like this. It was unbelievable.”

Two of Kyle’s brothers and fellow internationals, Lee and Ryan, also play for Lincoln Red Imps, a local side who provide 13 of the 23-man national squad. “There were 40,000 fans at that game,” said Ryan. “We usually get one or two hundred for a club game here.”

He was right. The next day Lincoln Red Imps took on Lynx, first against third in the local league. The crowd was 181, none of whom paid (admission is free). There is little or no money in Gibraltar football, which is why their acceptance as Uefa’s newest members in 2013 should be a game-changer.

Money for the national team will go towards a long-term plan for better facilities and player development, and the clubs benefit as two of them enter the preliminary rounds – and guaranteed prize money – in the Champions League and Europa League.

Twenty of the 23-man squad for the Scotland game are part-timers. Walker, who played a season at Portsmouth in England’s League One after impressing against them in a friendly, earns the same as a Spanish league lower division player.

The ‘stars’ are Preston North End defender Scott Wiseman and Bristol Rovers winger Jake Gosling, both of whom are on course for promotion this season. Two others are based in England – Dave Artell, who is a coach at Crewe and a part-time player in the Welsh League, and Adam Priestley, a free-scoring forward for Farsley AFC in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier.

Priestley, a teacher, played against Prescot Cables (attendance 129) last November and the next weekend he was sent on from the bench to mark Gotze at a free kick. His favourite memory to date was dispossessing Robert Lewandowski in the 7-0 defeat by Poland. Priestly has scored 20 for Farsley this season but has not had a single chance for Gibraltar, who have scored none and conceded 21 in their four games.

What, you might think, are this bunch of clerks, military police, shipping agents, firemen and teachers doing in the Euros? They are in because their repeated attempts to gain membership were approved by Uefa in 2013 and now they are trying to persuade Fifa of their eligibility. Their case will be heard in May by the Court of Arbitration for Sport but may take months to resolve.“We will seek special dispensation to play in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup,” said Dennis Beiso, chief executive of the Gibraltar FA.

There are many who believe that the likes of San Marino, Liechtenstein and Andorra already do enough damage to qualifying series, without the addition of another no-hoper. What does Beiso think?

“We subscribe to the Fifa view of universality, that everyone in football is seen as equal in their structure,” he told Goal. “It’s an unbelievable honour for us to be here, but we are very strong in some respects. We are the fifth oldest football association in the world [founded in 1895].“More than 10 per cent of the population here is involved in football as a player, referee, coach or helper.”

The biggest problem for Beiso and his organisation is that 2,650 registered players have only one full-size pitch, an artificial surface at Victoria Stadium. Land is scarce, especially flat land, and the clubs have to cross the border to Spain to train.

The stadium, capacity 2,400, is inadequate for hosting Uefa international matches. Because of political differences the GFA cannot ask Spanish clubs to host them so they travel to Faro, in Portugal, for home games. London is the more likely venue next time they enter a competitive tournament.

The planned new stadium at Europa Point – which would have views across the sea of Africa - has been delayed by hold-ups in the planning process.

The more immediate target is to score their first competitive goal. “We’re ambitious but realistic,” Priestley told Goal. “That first goal in qualifying is quite a target because when it comes, and whoever scores it, it’s going to go down in Gibraltar football history.”If Walker finds himself in range, watch out Scotland.

France 2-0 Denmark: Lacazette and Giroud on target

    1160662_heroa.jpg

Alexandre Lacazette scored his first France goal as the Euro 2016 hosts eased to a routine 2-0 friendly victory over Denmark at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday.

The Lyon striker earned an international recall in November and, on his sixth appearance for France, netted the opener before Olivier Giroud joined him on the scoresheet.

Giroud's first international goal since the World Cup win over Switzerland doubled the lead before half-time, while a cross from Michael Krohn-Dehli struck the post prior to half-time for the visitors.

It was a brief respite in a first half dominated by the hosts, although Denmark did keep goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier busy after the interval.

The Saint-Etienne man coped with what Lars Jacobsen and Nicklas Bendtner had to throw at him on his home ground, as Didier Deschamps' men saw out a relatively comfortable victory.Having seen his first-choice side beaten convincingly 3-1 by Brazil on Thursday, Deschamps handed chances to some of his fringe players.

And the France coach saw his much-changed XI make a bright start in Saint-Etienne as Lacazette broke the deadlock. Antoine Griezmann - who retained his starting spot from the Brazil defeat - had his chipped effort saved by Schmeichel before Lacazette fired in the rebound.

At the other end, Ruffier was quiet early on in only his third France start, with Lacazette almost doubling his tally before the half-hour, only for Schmeichel to save his prodded effort.

The barrage continued, with Dimitri Payet the next to go close as France's attacking quartet of Lacazette, Griezmann, Payet and Olivier Giroud caused no end of problems.

Denmark looked to have steadied themselves before the break, but France doubled their advantage when Giroud slipped Geoffrey Kondogbia's throughball underneath Schmeichel.

Krohn-Dehli's teasing delivery struck the post prior to the interval and it offered a sign of things to come in the second half, as Morten Olsen's men began to control proceedings.Despite enjoying greater possession, Denmark struggled to ask questions of Laurent Koscielny and Raphael Varane at the back, although Ruffier was troubled when he could only parry Jacobsen's long-range drive precariously over.

Ruffier then flung himself to save Bendtner's strike as Denmark showed glimpses of why they appear on course to return to France for next year's European showpiece.

The only sour point for Deschamps was the injury that forced full-back Christophe Jallet off late in the game.

Republic of Ireland 1-1 Poland: Long clinches late draw

    1161072_heroa.jpg

Shane Long struck in stoppage time to rescue a valuable 1-1 draw for Republic of Ireland against Poland in Euro 2016 qualifying Group D on Sunday.

Slawomir Peszko took advantage of a Robbie Brady error to score what looked like being the winner midway through the first half.

But Long came off the bench to score in the first minute of added time and improve Ireland's hopes of automatic qualification.

Martin O'Neill's side - beaten by Scotland in their previous qualifier - remain three points behind Adam Nawalka's men, who return to the top of the group, and two points back on Germany and Scotland.

With so much at stake, the contest was scrappy from the start, and both sides struggled to create clear-cut openings.

The hosts, in particular, were guilty of mistakes all over the pitch, but improved after half-time to ultimately salvage a point.

In an effort to avoid being overawed by the occasion, O'Neill had opted for experience in his selection.

He recalled Shay Given and captain Keane, after the record goalscorer only made the bench for November's defeat to Scotland.

The hosts saw little of the ball in the opening 10 minutes, but created the first opportunity from a quick free-kick, only for Wes Hoolahan to scuff his effort wide.

There was no such profligacy from Peszko when presented with a clear opening in the 26th minute.

Brady was caught in possession deep inside his own half, allowing Maciej Rybus to nip in and steal the ball before the Cologne midfielder took over to drive into the box and rifle a low shot past Given from a tight angle.

That goal unsettled Ireland and they appeared uncomfortable in possession, inhibited by the occasion.

However, they began to get to grips with the game, and their opposition, in the closing stages of the half.

Lukasz Fabianski was beaten six minutes into the second period, when Brady's left-wing cross took a deflection off the head of Pawel Olkowski, only to bounce out off the post.

James McClean came off the bench to inject some energy into the Republic of Ireland attack and almost laid on the equaliser in the 72nd minute.

His left-wing cross was met by Keane at the back post, but Fabianski was able to push the striker's header onto the post.

Frustration boiled over for the hosts in the closing stages and James McCarthy was lucky to escape with only a booking after raising his hand to strike Sebastian Mila in the face, moments after the Poland substitute had come on.

Just when the match appeared to be getting away from Ireland, Hoolahan put the ball back across goal following Brady's deep corner, enabling Long to control and clip over Fabianski from close range.

Portugal 2-1 Serbia: Coentrao fires Seleccao top of Group I

    1160622_heroa.jpg

Fabio Coentrao fired Portugal to the top of Group I in Euro 2016 qualification as Fernando Santos's side beat Serbia 2-1.

The Seleccao took the lead after just 10 minutes at Estadio da Luz thanks to a header from veteran defender Ricardo Carvalho. He was forced off soon after through injury, and Portugal looked set to be in for a frustrating night when Nemanja Matic equalised for Serbia.

The Chelsea man found the net with a superb acrobatic finish in the 61st minute, although he looked to be in an offside position as he scored.

Any grievances Portugal may have had were swiftly forgotten, however, as Coentrao netted what proved to be the decisive goal following a wonderful ball into the box from Joao Moutinho.

Serbia - competing in their first qualifier under Radovan Curcic - could not muster a late rally - as Portugal saw the game out to go two points clear of second-placed Denmark.

Carvalho broke the deadlock following a quick start from the hosts as he capitalised on poor Serbia defending to convert Coentrao's precise right-wing delivery.

However, just six minutes later Carvalho was withdrawn from the action. The former Chelsea and Real Madrid man limped off to be replaced by Jose Fonte, who made his competitive international debut.

Serbia responded to falling behind with a good spell of possession but Portugal would have doubled their lead if not for the reflexes of Vladimir Stojkovic.
Stojkovic flew to his right on the half-hour mark to turn a long-range drive from Cristiano Ronaldo over the crossbar.

Instances in which Serbia threatened the Portuguese goal were rare but striker Aleksandar Mitrovic should have done better when presented with a simple chance in the 52nd minute.Mitrovic rose highest to meet Dusan Tadic's left-wing cross but could only direct his point-blank header over the frame of the goal.

His profligacy mattered little as Matic levelled in magnificent fashion, the midfielder turning home Radosav Petrovic's header across the box with a stunning bicycle kick at the far post.

Yet parity lasted all of two minutes for the visitors, with Coentrao tapping home a simple finish at the end of an excellent attack, following a demonstration of vision and accuracy from Moutinho.

Serbia displayed plenty of endeavour thereafter, but that did not translate into any meaningful opportunities as Portugal put themselves in a commanding position in the battle for qualification.

Scotland 6-1 Gibraltar: Casciaro's moment of history outshone by Fletcher hat-trick

    1159952_heroa.jpg

Scotland survived a brief scare against Gibraltar before Steven Fletcher's hat-trick helped them to a comfortable 6-1 win in Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier at Hampden Park.

Gordon Strachan's men came into the game as strong favourites but became the first side to concede a competitive goal to Uefa's newest member nation when Lee Casciaro cancelled out Shaun Maloney's first-half penalty.

Casciaro, a policeman back in his homeland, placed a low shot beyond the advancing David Marshall as Gibraltar's wait for a first goal in qualifying was ended.

The visitors were level for less than 10 minutes, however, as Scotland found another gear and netted three times in quick succession before the interval.

Fletcher scored his first international goal in almost six years with a scrappy header before Casciaro had a more humbling moment with a foul on Steven Naismith and Maloney successfully converted his second spot kick.

Naismith got in on the act soon afterwards with a first-time finish as Scotland pulled further clear and Fletcher rounded off the scoring with two more goals in the second half as Strachan's side made it 10 points from five Group D games.

Gibraltar, meanwhile, will at least be buoyed by breaking their competitive goal duck, which was almost ended in the eighth minute when Marshall clawed the ball away as Joseph Chipolina's cross from the left threatened to drift in at the near post.

Scotland nerves were briefly settled 10 minutes later as Maloney calmly converted a spot kick, having been felled by goalkeeper Jamie Robba. It was a needless foul by Robba, with Maloney running towards the byeline, and the winger punished him by sending his kick into the bottom left corner.

Scotland's lead lasted just a minute, however, as Aaron Payas released Casciaro, who showed great composure to drill a low finish through Marshall's legs, sparking scenes of jubilation among the Gibraltar players and fans in the crowd.

Stunned by that equaliser, the hosts went back on the attack and scored three times in 10 minutes before the break.

Fletcher restored their advantage in the 29th minute as his header crept in after Gibraltar failed to deal with Ikechi Anya's cross and then Casciaro's clumsy challenge on Naismith allowed Maloney to double his tally with another penalty, which also went to the keeper's right.

The post kept out Fletcher's clever flick before Anya got in down the left and cut the ball back for Naismith to sweep home as Gibraltar wilted under the pressure.

Fletcher ought to have netted his second on the hour mark but he failed to get a telling touch on Alan Hutton's inviting cross from the right. The Sunderland striker made no mistake 17 minutes later, however, rising to nod in substitute Jordan Rhodes's delivery from the same flank. A calm left-footed finish a minute from time sealed his hat-trick.

It marked a welcome return to form for the forward, who had not found the net in any competition since November, as Scotland completed a convincing victory.

Georgia 0-2 Germany: Reus and Muller ease world champions to victory

    1159882_heroa.jpg

Marco Reus and Thomas Muller were on target as Germany cruised to a routine 2-0 victory over Georgia in Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier.

The world champions recalled Muller, Bastian Schweinsteiger - making his first appearance since last year's World Cup final - Toni Kroos and Mats Hummels to their starting XI, having rested the quartet for a 2-2 friendly draw with Australia on Wednesday.

Germany travelled to Tbilisi knowing they could ill-afford to come away with anything other than victory and the gap in quality was evident throughout at the Boris Paitschadse Stadium as the visitors dominated from start to finish. After spurning a host of early chances, Germany moved ahead through Reus in the 39th minute following excellent work from Bayern Munich's Mario Gotze.

And it was another Bayern star in Muller who subsequently doubled the advantage with a drilled strike from just inside the penalty area, allowing the visitors to take their foot off the pedal.

Reus struck the woodwork - for the second time - during a largely uneventful second half, but that was as close as Joachim's Low men came to a third goal as they moved alongside Scotland and Poland on 10 points at the top of Group D ahead of the latter's clash with the Republic of Ireland.Georgia suffered a setback in the fourth minute when centre-back Alexander Amisulashvili was forced with an injury.

And the home defence soon came under considerable pressure, Reus smashing an effort against the crossbar after being played in by Muller in the sixth minute.
Muller then turned an effort narrowly wide of the left-hand post following a well-worked corner from Toni Kroos.

Germany continued to display profligacy in front of goal despite dictating matters, Mesut Ozil failing to take advantage of Giorgi Loria's inability to deal with a Muller cross as he sent a tame volley straight into the goalkeeper's grasp.

Reus shot wide at the end of another free-flowing move on the half-hour mark. However, nine minutes later he atoned for that miss. The Borussia Dortmund forward curled home a low, close-range shot after former team-mate Gotze had
twisted his way past four defenders with a jinking run into the box.

Loria performed heroics to deny Reus and then Kroos before Gotze had a goal disallowed for offside.Yet Georgia's defence was breached for a second time a minute before the interval, Muller collecting Ozil's pass and firing into the bottom-right corner.

Reus shot against the bar from Sebastian Rudy's right-wing delivery on the hour mark to briefly light up a second half that had until that point only been noteworthy for a pitch invasion from one supporter, which was replicated in injury time.

Schweinsteiger and Jaba Kankava picked up yellow cards following an altercation, but Germany kept cool heads thereafter as they saw out the game with comfort to boost their hopes of topping a tightly contested group.

Brazil 1-0 Chile: Firmino gives Selecao battling victory

    1159192hp2.jpg

Roberto Firmino came off the bench to net the only goal in Brazil's 1-0 friendly win over Chile at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

In a battling affair, the Hoffenheim man replaced the ineffective Luiz Adriano on the hour-mark and struck the winner with a coolly-taken finish 11 minutes later.
The clash saw two of the modern game's biggest superstars in opposition, but neither Neymar nor Alexis Sanchez - on his home ground - had a significant impact.

Sanchez did show some touches of brilliance, while Neymar was involved in the game's most controversial moment in the first half when Chile midfielder Gary Medel stood on his leg in an off-the-ball incident which went unseen. The two sides' previous meeting came in the round of 16 in last year's World Cup, a game which saw Brazil prevail on penalties.

This encounter had none of that drama, but that will be of little concern to Brazil, who extended their perfect start to Dunga's second stint in charge, with eight victories from as many games since those fruitless finals on home soil. After an uneventful opening 20 minutes, Medel was fortunate to remain on the field after standing on Neymar as the pair tangled.

In getting back to his feet, Medel trod on the calf of the Brazil man, leaving Neymar writhing on the ground in apparent agony, but referee Martin Atkinson seemed not to see the incident.

Brazil went close to an opener in the 26th minute when Neymar's free kick from the left eluded everyone and had to be tipped round the post by Barcelona colleague Claudio Bravo.

Eight minutes prior to the interval, Marcelo's diagonal ball picked out Douglas Costa unmarked at the back post but, after chesting the ball down, his volley was wayward.

Chile felt they should have had a penalty 11 minutes into the second period when Mauricio Isla went down under Marcelo's challenge, but Atkinson waved away their appeals.

Sanchez, having been hauled down by Miranda, curled a 25-yard free kick narrowly over the bar in the 64th minute before firing another set-piece straight at Jefferson as Chile looked the more likely side to break the deadlock.

However, somewhat against the run of play, it was Brazil who went in front as Danilo's pass picked out Firmino, who rounded Bravo and slotted home – cheekily looking away in the process of scoring.

Chile were unable to force an equaliser in the closing stages, as Brazil held on and gave themselves a boost in their final game before the deadline to announce squads for the Copa America in June, with Firmino looking increasingly likely to be involved.

Suarez on a Premier League return: I'd only play for Liverpool

    luis-suarez-liverpool-charity-match-29032015_ktsn94rrstin1sqi14g49mpj6.jpg

Luis Suarez has refused to rule out one day returning to Liverpool - and says there is no other Premier League club he would consider representing.

Suarez, who left Liverpool in July to join Barcelona in a reported €102 million deal, was back at Anfield on Sunday for a charity match pitting a Steven Gerrard XI against a side led by Jamie Carragher.

After the game, Suarez was asked by Liverpool's official website if he may play for the club again.

The Uruguay forward responded: "You never know in football, but if in the future I play in England again, I play with the Liverpool shirt on and not another shirt."

Suarez, who scored 82 goals in 133 appearances for Liverpool, welcomed the opportunity to partner Fernando Torres in attack for the Gerrard XI.

"It was great for me," he added.

"Four years ago when I arrived here for Liverpool, I crossed my fingers to play with Fernando and he left three days after I signed.

"Today was a great day for all the players, but for me and Fernando it was a great chance to play together."

Gerrard scored two penalties as his side came from behind to draw 2-2 in Sunday's match.

Dunga's Brazil hard to beat - Sampaoli

Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli felt his side were the better team for much of their 1-0 defeat to Brazil on Sunday but admitted Dunga's side are difficult to beat.

La Roja failed to carve out clear-cut opportunities in the match but enjoyed strong possession and ran the Selecao close before Roberto Firmino latched onto a Danilo through-pass to roll in the only goal of the game.Sampaoli says he saw a lot of positives in his side’s performance, although he acknowledged the quality of the opposition.

"I think Chile dominated and it’s very difficult to master Dunga’s Brazil,” Sampaoli said.

“Me, I'm proud that the team played well against Brazil. We are on a path hoping to emerge as contenders at the Copa America and in that sense we are on the right track.”Chile host the tournament in June and will arrive as favourites to lift what would be their first ever South American crown.

And Sampaoli, who guided them through a World Cup group last year that included Spain and the Netherlands, was left to lament a lapse in concentration that he said cost his side a draw against the Selecao. “Brazil never let you off,” he said.

“They took of advantage when we lost concentration. We played with a good intensity and really did not expect the goal because we felt in command of the game. But the collective performance remains unblemished by that."
