Isco: Don't compare me to Iniesta

    isco-alarcon-real-madrid-deportivo-de-la-coruna-liga-bbva-02142015_geoj4w5hd5il1g8jc96c1ll9x.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Isco has admitted he is growing tired of the comparisons with Andres Iniesta, even though he feels honoured to be likened to the Barcelona man.

The 22-year-old, who joined Madrid from Malaga in the summer of 2013, has drawn comparisons with his fellow Spain international due to his style of play, yet he is determined to become a big name himself.

"It is an honour that people are comparing me to Iniesta because of everything that he has achieved," Isco said at a press conference."But, and I have said this before, I do not like these kinds of comparisons. Andres is Andres and I am Isco. I am a different person and player.

"I want to etch my name into the history books myself, both at club and international level."

Isco went on to stress that he is a good relationship with Iniesta and is happy to play alongside him with the national team."I get on with Iniesta very well. It is very easy to get along well with him, just like with all players at the national team."

Bayern: We could spend €100m on one star

    jan-christian-dreesen-fc-bayern-munchen_15268gc7xt3dj1jrf6bbor4hyc.jpg

Bayern Munich executive board member Jan-Christian Dreesen has admitted the club could spend €100 million on a star name.

The Bundesliga champions have so far refused to match La Liga and Premier League giants when it comes to spending big in the transfer market, with the arrival of Javi Martinez for €40 million in 2012 still their record outlay.

However, Dreesen has acknowledged they could emulate the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United and pay figures closer to the world-record fee of Gareth Bale for a top individual.

"It would be simple to say Bayern would never pay €100 million for one player. I don't want to go there, though, because I do not like to backtrack in the future. So yes, Bayern could spend €100m on one player," Dreesen, the club's head of finances, told Kicker.

"It will have to be an intelligent investment, though. We don't just want to go for the most expensive players. Someone has to fit in at Bayern."

Player wages have increased exponentially along with transfer fees in recent seasons but Bayern claim salaries of €10m per year and more are unusual at the Allianz Arena. While Dreesen is confident wages are no stumbling block for the club, he concedes they could miss out on signing players driven purely by thoughts of a big pay packet.

"Players making €10m or more remain an exception, even though I think wages will continue to rise," Dreesen said. "I have yet to see a player demand wages that we could not afford. I get the impression that the coach's advice on which players would fit at Bayern is very important.

"The top players are significantly more expensive than before. And with the Premier League's new TV deal, wages will not decrease any time soon. So Bayern will have to look after these players even more intensively than before. We might miss out on those who are only looking to make a lot of money."

Falcao 'has faith' over Manchester United stay

    radamel-falcao-garcia_1va99izz5rb3h1mq47hblto3gv.jpg

Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao says he “has faith” that he could stay with the club next season despite largely disappointing following his big-money loan move from Monaco.

The Colombia international has managed just four goals in 19 games for Louis van Gaal’s side this season and has started only once in the Premier League since the visit of Burnley on February 11.

However, the 29-year-old has been on form for his country in the last five days, scoring three times in two games, against Bahrain and Kuwait, to equal Colombia’s all-time goalscoring record with 24 goals.

After netting a penalty in the 3-1 win over Kuwait, Falcao was asked if he expected to stay at Manchester United and replied: “I have faith about that and when the season finishes I am going to sit down and think about my future and what is the best for my career.”Falcao’s last Manchester United goal came against Leicester back in January but the striker says he will return to Old Trafford boosted by his strikes for his country.“I think when I score it's always important and that gives me confidence,” he added.

“I said before I need minutes, I need to play games in a row and here in the national team I have had the opportunity. I gave my best and I scored and I now return to Manchester with more confidence.

“We have the last eight games, I will give my best to have the chance to play as many minutes as possible.

“I have said before I need to play, I need minutes and I am confident about me, about my fitness. I am confident.”

Mexico 1-0 Paraguay: Eduardo Herrera's debut goal secures victory

    1170962_heroa.jpg

Eduardo Herrera scored with his first touch in international football, netting the only goal in Mexico's 1-0 triumph over Paraguay in Kansas City on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old striker volleyed Juan Carlos Medina's free kick home at the back post in just the third minute at Arrowhead Stadium, and while Mexico had the better of the chances for the rest of the match, El Tri had to settle for successive one-goal wins.

Mexico's blistering start - Herrera had a second goal ruled out in the sixth minute - saw Paraguay attempt to shut the match down by out muscling its opponent, and the game at times descended into simply a string of fouls and dangerous tackles.
Miguel Herrera's Mexican side has three more friendlies before it kicks off its Copa America campaign against Bolivia in June.

Herrera had made his international debut in the final seconds of Mexico's 1-0 win over Ecuador on Saturday but did not touch the ball. The Pumas forward only had to wait two minutes into his first start for Mexico to make up for that with his maiden goal.

Herrera stood in an offside position as Medina prepared to take a set piece from the left and as the striker moved back onside, Paraguay's defense did not pick him up.

Paraguay goalkeeper Justo Villar stayed on his line and Herrera toe-poked Medina's cross into the top corner of the net.Herrera was one of 10 changes to Mexico's starting lineup from the victory against Ecuador with only defender Diego Reyes keeping his spot.

It could have been 2-0 three minutes later but Herrera was correctly penalized for standing too close to a free kick for Paraguay, which he intercepted, before slotting the ball in the bottom corner.

With Mexico pressing high and causing its opponent problems, Paraguay attempted to gain the ascendancy through its physicality with Richard Ortiz going into the book in the ninth minute.Villar picked up an injury and was replaced by Antony Silva in Paraguay's goal on the half-hour mark, and Raul Jimenez tested the new glove man with a long-range shot four minutes later.

But in a match of few genuine chances, Paraguay should have equalized just before halftime when Ortiz was left unmarked at a corner but his header crashed off the crossbar. The second half continued the theme of the first with a lack of quality in the forward areas and regular free kicks.

The match ended with 43 fouls and seven yellow cards, as Paraguay coach Ramon Diaz was forced to wait for his maiden win in charge of the South Americans, after a scoreless draw at Costa Rica last week.

Argentina 2-1 Ecuador: Pastore the hero in Messi's absence

    1170712_heroa.jpg

It was a landmark day for Javier Pastore, who scored his maiden international goal as Argentina overcame Ecuador 2-1 in an international friendly at MetLink Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday.

Argentina were without captain Lionel Messi for the second consecutive match, with a foot injury sidelining the 97-cap veteran, but Pastore stepped up in his absence.Pastore netted the winner 13 minutes into the second half to inspire Argentina, ending his 17-match international goal drought.

Argentina and Ecuador were level at the break after Miller Bolanos cancelled out Sergio Aguero's eighth-minute opener in the United States.

Gerardo Martino's Argentina have one more friendly fixture - against Bolivia on June 6 - remaining before the Copa America kicks off in Chile in June, while Ecuador face Panama (June 3 and 7) in a double-header ahead of the tournament's curtain-raiser on June 11.

Argentina fielded virtually an entire new starting XI, with 10 changes made to the team that defeated El Salvador 2-0 on Saturday, though Angel Di Maria retained his place.

Antonio Valencia, Arturo Mina and Jefferson Montero all made way for Ecuador as Gustavo Quinteros included Gabriel Achilier, Angel Mena and Renato Ibarra.

Argentina wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Aguero - unmarked at the back post - heading home Di Maria's corner from close range in the eighth minute for his 23rd goal in 60 appearances.

Marcos Rojo and Di Maria both came close to doubling Argentina's lead but Ecuador started to take control of proceedings from the 18th-minute mark after Mena's glancing header was dealt with by goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The Ecuadorians continued to press forward in search of an equaliser and they were rewarded five minutes later thanks to Bolanos, who scored his first international goal after missing a penalty against Mexico last week.Bolanos received a cross from out wide, which evaded two defenders, and his shot took a deflection before the ball went underneath Romero.

Argentina almost regained the lead five minutes before half-time, when Lucas Biglia's free-kick bobbled up off the ground and forced Alexander Dominguez to spoon the ball away for a corner.

The second half began frantically, with Argentina's pace causing Ecuador problems and it was not long before Martino's men hit the front again.Pastore sprung the offside trap as Ecuador attempted to clear their lines and slotted the ball underneath Dominguez in the 58th minute.

Aguero had a golden chance to seal the victory for Argentina but the Manchester City star sliced his shot wide of the post with 18 minutes remaining.

Portugal 0-2 Cape Verde Islands: African minnows claim historic victory

    1169952_heroa.jpg

A Cristiano Ronaldo-less Portugal slumped to a shock 2-0 friendly defeat to Cape Verde on Tuesday night as the African nation recorded a famous win.

Having beaten Serbia 2-1 in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday, Portugal coach Fernando Santos named a completely new starting XI for the friendly, which was scheduled to raise money for the victims of a volcanic eruption on the Cape Verdean island of Fogo.

Despite the scratch side, the Seleccao will still have expected to see off Cape Verde - who were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the group stages - at Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota in Estoril.

But they were stunned by an impressive performance from Rui Aguas' side, who took the lead in the 38th minute as a seemingly aimless right-wing cross from birthday boy Odair Fortes was allowed into sneak into the net by debutant goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.Gege's close-range strike doubled Cape Verde's advantage and any prospect of a Portugal revival was effectively ended by Andre Pinto's 60th-minute dismissal.

Pinto saw red for hacking down Heldon as the Cape Verde forward raced clear of the defence, with Portugal unable to overcome their numerical disadvantage on a disappointing evening for Santos' men.

Cape Verde made a lively start and went close in the 11th minute as Julio Tavares saw a close-range effort deflected wide following good work down the right from Fortes.

However, Portugal quickly began to dictate proceedings, with visiting goalkeeper Vozinha called into action to keep out Vierinha's near-post header and then deny Bernardo Silva with a low stop.

But, against the run of play, Cape Verde took the lead as Lopes could only manage to get a hand to Fortes' cross-cum-shot, which looped in at the far post to delight the contingent of fans supporting the islanders. And they were given more reason to celebrate just five minutes later. Heldon's free-kick from the right-hand side of the box deflected into the path of Gege, who was presented with the simple task of tapping in from a yard out.

Portugal pressed to try to halve the deficit in the second-half. Hugo Almeida spurned a golden chance to pull a goal back as he headed wide from Vierinha's far-post cross.

But the hosts' hopes of mounting a comeback were dealt a major blow on the hour mark when Pinto was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge as Heldon surged towards goal.

Pinto's sending off did not affect Portugal's attacking ambition, but their efforts ultimately proved fruitless on a famous night for Cape Verde.

:(Netherlands 2-0 Spain: Rejuvenated Dutch ease pressure on Hiddink

    1169292_heroa.jpg

Netherlands recorded a morale-boosting 2-0 friendly victory over Spain on Tuesday night to ease the pressure on coach Guus Hiddink.

Saturday's 1-1 draw with Turkey in Euro 2016 qualifying led to calls for the coach to resign, but two goals in the space of three first-half minutes gave the Oranje a second successive win over Spain to help restore some confidence.

Stefan De Vrij broke the deadlock after 13 minutes with a well-placed header, before Davy Klaassen netted his first international goal at his home stadium.

Spain were denied a way back into the game when David Silva saw an effort ruled out as they slipped to third friendly defeat in a row.

Hiddink will hope his side can now take some momentum from the win as they look to fight back in Group A given they trail leaders Czech Republic by six points and second-placed Iceland by five.

Having snatched a draw in stoppage time against Turkey, Hiddink's side - which included five changes - seemed to take momentum forward and started in superb fashion.

Memphis Depay brought the first save out of David de Gea with a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area, but the Manchester United goalkeeper could do nothing about De Vrij's opener. The Lazio defender found space inside the area to guide home Wesley Sneijder's inviting cross after 13 minutes for his third international goal.

The hosts doubled their advantage three minutes later as Klaassen punished some slack Spain defending, with the midfielder converting at the second attempt after good work from Depay and Jetro Willems.

Spain – who fielded nine new players from Friday's qualifying win over Ukraine – had flattered to deceive for much of the first half and they found Kenneth Vermeer in fine form when they did pose a threat.

The Feyenoord goalkeeper was alert to deny Gerard Pique after 28 minutes and he reacted well soon after to clear before Pedro could convert after a jinking run into the penalty area.

Netherlands made another swift start after the break and should have been further ahead after 53 minutes, but Bruno Martins Indi inexplicably failed to convert Sneijder's cross from three yards out.

With both sides utilising their squads, the game lost some momentum but Spain nearly found a way back into the match as substitute Silva saw a 69th minute effort ruled out.The Manchester City forward was penalised after an Alvaro Morata shot struck him in an offside position before he fired past Vermeer.

Late pressure from the visitors – including a Cesc Fabregas effort - failed to produce the desired effect and Netherlands clung on to what could be a crucial win for Hiddink's future.

Italy 1-1 England: Townsend rocket earns draw for Three Lions

    1169472_heroa.jpg

England maintained their unbeaten run since their early World Cup exit as Andros Townsend's stunning effort secure a draw against Italy.

England's 2-1 defeat to Italy in their opening game of last year's World Cup set the tone for a disappointing campaign for Roy Hodgson's men, crashing out ignominiously at the group stage.

And, after Graziano Pelle scored a 29th-minute header in Turin, the Three Lions looked set to be heading for another defeat at the hands of the Azzurri.

Italy coach Antonio Conte had his own point to prove having been subjected to death threats for the alleged role played by his training methods in a knee injury suffered by Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio - later found to be not as serious as first thought.

However, the match was to end in disappointment for the ex-Juve coach on his old stomping ground, as Townsend's thunderous 79th-minute strike from the edge of the area extended England's unbeaten run to nine matches.

Eder and Harry Kane were rewarded for their debut goals at the weekend with starts for Italy and England respectively, but it was Marco Parolo who got the first sight of goal after 10 minutes - forcing Joe Hart to tip over his crossbar with a dipping effort from 20 yards.

Brazil-born Eder's inclusion in the squad had been the subject of fierce debate in the build-up to Sunday's 2-2 Euro 2016 qualifying draw in Bulgaria and, while he scored a vital equaliser in that clash, his first real contribution on home soil was to nearly find the corner flag with a free-kick from a promising position.

Phil Jagielka slid in to deny the Sampdoria frontman in the six-yard box moments later, before Wayne Rooney, who struck the woodwork twice in Saturday's 4-0 demolition of Lithuania, saw an effort from the edge of the box deflected against the crossbar.

Rooney then found Theo Walcott with a sublime long-range pass, but the Arsenal winger was unable to make the most of the opportunity, as the ball wound up in the arms of Gianluigi Buffon - a starter when England last visited Turin in 2000.

However, after the visitors had shown signs of promise at one end, Giorgio Chiellini danced past a ponderous Phil Jones at the other and chipped the ball into the box for Pelle to glance home.

Chris Smalling left the field injured before half-time and the England defence came under pressure at the beginning of the second - Eder drawing a good save from Hart before Pelle drilled wide.

Kane struggled to make an impact on his full international debut and saw his best effort deflected wide, before Rooney fired straight at Buffon.

Substitutions by both coaches interrupted the flow of the match in the second half, but one of those replacements, Townsend, rifled in the equaliser from 20 yards to rescue a draw for the visitors.
