:cool:Young set to sign new three-year Manchester United deal

    815542_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are set to reward Ashley Young for his fine form with a three-year contract extension, Goal understands.

Young has been one of the stand-out performers for United in the last month as the club have bounced back from FA Cup elimination at the hands of Arsenal to secure impressive victories against Tottenham, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

The England winger scored one and set up another two in Sunday's derby victory against City, which moved Louis van Gaal's men closer to Champions League qualification via a top-four Premier League finish.

United opened talks with Young several weeks ago and he is expected to take a slight cut on his current €166,000-per-week deal, although he is likely to make up the total figure in bonuses.

Van Gaal has assured the midfielder, who will be 30 in July, that he is an important part of his plans at Old Trafford.

Indeed, he has kept British record signing Angel Di Maria out of the starting line-up in recent weeks and is currently enjoying some of his best performances since joining United from Aston Villa in 2011.

Young started his United career positively, most notably in the landmark 8-2 victory against Arsenal, but has often struggled to nail down a starting berth.

But he is beginning to form an understanding on the left-hand side with stand-in left-back Daley Blind and advanced midfielder Marouane Fellaini, another maligned member of the squad who has enjoyed a drastic upturn in fortunes this season.

United signed Michael Carrick up to a one-year extension at the end of March, while preliminary talks have been held with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, and a new deal for young striker James Wilson is in the offing.

Liverpool 2-0 Newcastle: Sterling & Allen boost top-four hopes

    1229952_heroa.jpg

Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners against Newcastle United at Anfield to move within four points of Manchester City and the top four.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen either side of half-time kept Brendan Rodgers' side's Champions League hopes alive and condemned the Mapies to a fifth consecutive defeat.

To compound the visitors' woes, Moussa Sissoko was sent off late on for two bookable offences.

Following back-to-back league defeats against Manchester United and Arsenal, Liverpool were given an ideal start when Sterling curled home nine minutes in.
Brendan Rodgers' side - shorn of injured striker Daniel Sturridge - controlled the remainder of the half, but were perhaps fortunate not to concede a penalty when Dejan Lovren appeared to foul Ayoze Perez.

While Newcastle improved after the break, Sterling should have put the game to bed before the hour as he conspired to miss from close-range, with Liverpool's profligate finishing frustrating the home faithful.

However, Allen's instinctive strike erased any fears of a slip-up as Liverpool ensured they remain in the hunt for a top-four finish as well as FA Cup honours, with a Wembley semi-final against Aston Villa to come this weekend.

In contrast, John Carver's Newcastle, who saw captain Moussa Sissoko sent off for a second time this season late on, limp towards the end of another disappointing campaign following a fifth defeat on the bounce.

After a dismal showing in the derby defeat to Sunderland, Carver made three changes and Newcastle started relatively brightly prior to the game's first moment of quality that broke the deadlock.

Sterling offered a timely reminder of his prodigious talent as he brought down Jordan Henderson's delivery before breezing past half-hearted challenges from Daryl Janmaat and Gabriel Obertan and curling a strike past the helpless Tim Krul.
The Liverpool pressure was almost constant prior to the half-hour mark, other than a strike from Mehdi Abeid that was comfortably saved by Simon Mignolet.

Newcastle should perhaps have been given an opportunity to draw level seven minutes before the break, but Lovren's clumsy challenge on Perez was not enough to persuade Lee Mason to point to the penalty spot.

Perez had the half's final chance - Mignolet clawing out the Spaniard's header - and Newcastle took that momentum into the second period by creating a flurry of half-chances.

Sterling then missed a gilt-edged opportunity shortly before the hour as he managed to place an effort wide with the goal at his mercy following a defensive howler from Ryan Taylor.

However, as Liverpool got back on top, Mike Williamson's sloppy defending allowed Allen a sight of goal - the Welshman duly firing past Krul to seal the points, with Sterling coming close to a second shortly after.

There was still time for Sissoko - booked for an altercation with Glen Johnson - to cap another disappointing outing for Newcastle by gaining another yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Lucas Leiva seven minutes from time.It leaves Carver's men looking nervously over their shoulders while Liverpool move fifth.

Valencia 3-0 Levante: Alcacer, Feghouli & Negredo tighten grip on Champions League spot

    1229862_heroa.jpg

Valencia took another huge step towards Champions League qualification as they beat Levante 3-0 on Monday.

A header from Paco Alcacer and another from Sofiane Feghouli - both in the first half - put the home side firmly in control of the encounter at the Mestalla.

And Alvaro Negredo's emphatic late strike was enough to seal maximum points for Nuno Espirito Santo's side and take them to within a point of third-placed Atletico Madrid in the Liga table.

Valencia were denied early on by the offside flag as the assistant referee deemed Alcacer to be ahead of play when he tapped in Feghouli's pass, though replays showed he was onside.

However, the home side did not take long to recover from the setback, as Alcacer met Dani Parejo's pinpoint cross with a deft glancing header which flew into the far corner on 16 minutes.

Rodrigo came close to doubling the advantage after combining well with Alcacer on the half-hour mark, but he dragged his left-footed shot wide from an angle.

Levante spurned a great chance to equalise when David Barral blazed over following a fine team move involving Tono and Victor Casadesus - and that miss would prove costly just a minute later.

Lucas Orban whipped in a fine cross from the left and Feghouli arrived right on cue to head home the hosts' second 10 minutes before the break.

Ivan Lopez almost made an immediate impact off the bench for Levante after half-time but his rasping shot dipped onto the crossbar, with Diego Alves completely beaten.

Shkodran Mustafi was denied from inside the box by Diego Marino as he prodded goalwards following a corner and Alves was called into action as Jose Mari rifled a shot which the Brazilian superbly stopped from flying into the top corner.

Joao Cancelo and Alcacer then combined well to allow the former a shot into the side netting, but Valencia were comfortably in control and in no hurry to force the issue in attack.

Alves was called into action again to deny Barral superbly before Negredo wrapped up the win with the last kick of the game.

The former Sevilla man bustled his way into space after bringing down Antonio Barragan's raking long pass before unleashing a stunning half-volley which sailed into the top left-hand corner.

Valencia are now three clear of fifth-placed Sevilla, while Levante remain in the bottom three, though they are level on points with Almeria and Deportivo directly above them.

Chelsea U19 3-2 Shakhtar Donetsk U19: Blues Under-19s crowned European champions

    1229492_heroa.jpg

Chelsea Under-19s were crown European champions after defeating Shakhtar Donestk in the Uefa Youth League final in Nyon on Monday.

Izzy Brown gave the English outfit the lead after just seven minutes, latching onto a cut-back from the tournament's leading scorer Dominic Solanke to tuck home from 12 yards.

Shakhtar levelled matters as the first half drew to a close when Andreas Christensen failed to control a Denys Arendaruk cross and the ball rolled into his own net.

Chelsea, though, picked up again in the second half and Solanke got a goal of his own with a towering header from Jeremie Boga's cross just two minutes after the restart.

Brown added his second and Chelsea's third just eight minutes later with a cool finish from the edge of the area as Shakhtar, who were unbeaten in the competition's nine games heading into the tie, collapsed.

It was a confident performance from Chelsea, who dominated proceedings before Viktor Kovalenko netted a stoppage-time consolation, and become the second team to win the tournament after Barcelona last year.

Champions League the dream for Clyne

    nathianelclyne-cropped_wktgdpcwl7uu1ve07ek6xmdd9.jpg

Nathaniel Clyne has cast doubt on his long-term future at Southampton after speaking of his ambition to play in the Champions League.

The England international has been in fine form at St Mary's this season and has been linked with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and most prominently Manchester United.

Speaking last Friday, manager Ronald Koeman admitted it would be difficult to retain the full-back, saying Southampton face a battle to hold on to one of their prize assets.

Clyne insists that his focus remains on Southampton, but he stated his desire to win trophies and play in Europe's premier competition.

"It's always good to have teams looking out for you, it shows how well you've been doing all season," he told Sky Sports.

"I am going to take that, and keep on performing and be the best player I can be.

"Right now I'm concentrating on playing for Southampton, there are still games to play, and try to push for that fourth spot.

"I am an ambitious person and I want to play Champions League football. To win the title and the FA Cup, that is what I want."

Drogba: This isn't my last season

    didierdrogba_o9xzr7qmyjxx115j12d132mxp.jpg

Didier Drogba has revealed he plans on extending his playing career for another year, despite his Chelsea contract currently set to expire at the end of the season.

At 37, Drogba is almost at the end of a storied career that has seen him win league titles in England and Turkey, the Champions League, the FA Cup on four occasions and three League Cups.

The former Ivory Coast international looks set to finish 2014-15 as a Premier League title winner for a fourth time although he is used primarily as an impact substitute in his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba penned a one-year deal when he rejoined Chelsea in July and wants to play on into 2015-16.

"I have made a decision, yes," he told the Daily Telegraph when asked if he has reached a decision on his future. "And no, it's not my last season."

Drogba has scored three goals in 23 league appearances for Chelsea this term, four of which have been starts.

Back in January, Drogba said: "I love this club and would love to be part of this club for the future, with the new players."

Messi: I feel great after a rough 2014

    messi-sevilla_j2i2pyef7r5l1t5ilatid7vle.jpg

Lionel Messi says he feels back to his best after what he feels was a difficult 2014 plagued with off-field problems.

The Argentine was came under criticism towards the end of last season as his side lost out on the Liga title to Atletico Madrid and were eliminated from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, while the player himself was beaten to the Fifa Ballon d'Or by Cristiano Ronaldo_Off the field, he became the subject of a tax investigation, with a threat of possible jail time looming over him.

The 27-year-old, however, says he has recovered from a rough year and is happy with his personal life and his performances.

"I am happy. The truth is that I started the season in another way after what happened to me last year," he told Barca's official website. "I had a difficult year for what happened off the field, for my injuries and my performance. But this year I started differently and now I feel great.

"Last year I had an uneven season. I was out with injuries and missed many games. When I returned to the pitch, it never ended well. It was a year that I've tried to forget quickly to get back to my best version. Luckily now I feel fine."

The Catalan side failed to pick up a major trophy last season and Messi feels that disappointment has motivated the players to return to picking up silverware this term.

"We came from a time when each year we were winning a title, and perhaps we did not value what we were winning," he added.

"It was a bad year in which we won nothing, and now, when they get back some success, we will see how important they are and enjoy them more because we know they are very hard to achieve."

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner is nearing his 400th Barcelona goal and he said he wants to keep adding to his tally once he reaches the milestone.

"It's nice to score goals. Some are special, but it's the same. By now every goal is a goal, but it is nice to know that I can keep adding to them and remain in the history of this great club."

The attacker also praised team-mates Luis Suarez and Neymar, stating that they add a new dimension to the team's front line.

"Barcelona have always had great forwards, not just now with Neymar and Luis. But it's true that we are taking advantage of them because they are both great world stars. They give us another thing than goals, so in that sense, I'm calm."

Bartomeu could face two years in prison

    josepmariabartomeu_bi9c3kznkugn1f2mkb21ro2bz.jpg

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu should go to jail for two years for committing fiscal fraud in the signing of Neymar, Spanish state lawyers have recommended.

Legal representatives last month called for a prison term for both Bartomeu and former club chief Sandro Rosell, who resigned in January 2014 due to the controversial transfer.

Bartomeu has long maintained his innocence and claimed Rosell was solely responsible for the deal to sign the forward from Santos in 2013.

But Spanish lawyers have recommended a sentence of two years and three months for the current Barca chief and a jail term of six years and nine months for his predecessor, it emerged on Monday.

The lawyers, acting on behalf of Spain's tax authorities, have also accused Barcelona of three counts of financial-related crimes between 2011 and 2014 - and have demanded the club pay €11.4 million in compensation.

It is claimed Barca deliberately evaded a €13m tax payment in the transfer, which was initially said to have cost the Catalan club €57m but has since surpassed the €100m mark due to hidden payments and taxes not included in the original figures.
If found guilty, Barca face a fine of €22.2m, Rosell €25.1m and Bartomeu €3.8m.

Jardim: Juventus are stronger than Arsenal

    leonardo-jardim-monaco_1kwryij0z7ue810iq9nqrw1lw5.jpg

Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim believes his side will need to step up another level if they are to beat Juventus in the Champions League quarter-final.The Ligue 1 side shocked Arsenal at the last-16 stage but the Portuguese believes the Italian champions represent even sterner opponents.

“For me, Juventus are a better side than Arsenal because they have made it to the quarter-finals,” he told the media.

“Juventus will be favourites because of their qualities and their experience. We have to respect them but at the same time play our own game with the belief that we can rise to this great challenge.“We’re here because we deserve to be – we finished first in our group. We are collective and organised; all my players know what to do in every situation.”

With Paul Pogba out, there will be an added focus on Carlos Tevez to carry the Italian side, but Jardim believes his side cannot focus solely on the Argentine.

“Tevez is the top scorer in Serie A, but Juventus are not only Tevez,” he added.
Meanwhile, Jardim can call upon his own in-form attacker in the shape of teenager Anthony Martial.

“He’s improved a lot this season but there is still room for progress,” the ex-Braga boss said of the attacker, who has scored six times in his last six Ligue 1 outings.
Martial is still seeking his first Champions League goal and is expected to be preferred to Dimitar Berbatov in the starting XI at Juventus Stadium.

Defeats to Atletico won't affect Madrid, says Marcelo

    marcelo-la-liga-real-madrid-19082014_thw3ot5fje2g1se7tfhbiczbg.jpg

Marcelo believes Real Madrid are in good shape ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico and says their four defeats to Diego Simeone's side this season will have no bearing on the rivals' European tie.

Madrid face Atletico at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday after failing to win any of their previous six meetings with the Rojiblancos in 2014-15, losing four of those and drawing the other two.

Real's last win over their city rivals came in last season's Champions League final in Lisbon, when Sergio Ramos headed home a late leveller and Madrid won it 4-1 after extra-time.“I don’t know how many times we have spoken about Ramos’ Decima goal this week,” Marcelo said in Monday's pre-match press conference.

“We have changed so much since Lisbon," he added. "We have played against Atletico a lot and something always changes. There are no favourites in a match like this. We will give everything on the pitch without thinking about previous games."Marcelo, who scored in last season's showpiece in the Portuguese capital, says he was happy to help the side achieve their dream of a 10th European crown and now hopes Madrid can prove themselves against Atletico all over again.

"I was available for the final and I never lost faith in helping the team," he said. "That’s what happened and I was able to help the team win the Champions League. I consider myself very important in this team.“We have to go out and give everything on the pitch this time. We will have to be very intense. We will have to fight. These derbies are very difficult.

"They are a great team. They never stop fighting and they are very intense. But we are not thinking about the last games against them. Now is completely different. We have two games to show that we can beat them.”
