Bayern Munich 6-1 Porto (agg 7-4): Lewandowski inspires stunning comeback

    1270522_heroa.jpg

Two goals from Robert Lewandowski helped inspire Bayern Munich to a sensational 6-1 thrashing of Porto and seal their place in the Champions League semi-finals.

Trailing 3-1 from the quarter-final first leg, Pep Guardiola's side produced a devastating first-half display, scoring five times in the opening 40 minutes to leave the visitors shell-shocked.

Defensive errors had cost Bayern dear in the opening encounter, but it was their supreme attacking quality that came to the fore at the Allianz Arena.

Club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt resigned in the wake of last week's reverse, claiming his medical team had been blamed for the defeat, but even without the absent trio of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, Guardiola's team simply had too much for the 2004 winners.

Thiago Alcantara - who netted Bayern's away goal at the Estadio do Dragao - opened the scoring inside quarter of an hour and it was 3-0 before the 30th minute thanks to further goals from Jerome Boateng and Robert Lewandowski.

Thomas Muller's deflected effort made it four, before Lewandowski doubled his tally with a clinical finish as Porto failed to live with Bayern's movement and incisiveness.

With the job done for the Bundesliga champions, the second half proved a low-key affair, Jackson Martinez's goal 17 minutes from time proving nothing more than consolation, especially as there was still time for Xabi Alonso to curl home a late free kick following a tackle that saw Ivan Marcano sent off for his second booking.

Bayern suffered a nightmare first 10 minutes in the opening leg when they found themselves 2-0 down, but there were no such mishaps here and it proved a sign of things to come when Muller's shot was saved by Fabiano and Lewandowski sent the rebound against the upright.

Guardiola's men did not have to wait long to break the deadlock, however, as Thiago headed in Juan Bernat's left-wing cross in the 14th minute.

And eight minutes later, Bayern doubled their advantage.

Holger Badstuber - selected ahead of Dante in Bayern's only change from the first leg - nodded a cross towards Boateng, who headed beyond Fabiano into the bottom right-hand corner.

Porto's game went from bad to worse in the 27th minute as Muller flicked on Philipp Lahm's driven cross and Lewandowski was left unmarked to plant his header into the net from eight yards.

Muller then got in on the act for Bayern as his speculative shot from distance took a wicked deflection off Bruno Martins Indi, wrongfooted Fabiano and trickled beyond the goalkeeper's feeble attempt to save with his leg and into the net.

With five minutes still to go until the break, Muller teed up Lewandowski, who made space for himself inside the area and shot low into the left-hand corner as Bayern ran riot.

Badstuber was perhaps fortunate only to receive a yellow card for a dangerous lunge on Ricardo Quaresma before Martinez's close-range header from Hector Herrera's cross left Porto needing two more.

Martinez went close with a low shot soon afterwards, but Porto's faint hopes were extinguished when Marcano was dismissed for a second bookable offence and Alonso curled the resulting free kick into the left-hand corner to seal a 7-4 aggregate scoreline.

The result capped a fine way for Bayern to celebrate Guardiola's 100th match in charge in style, this marking his 77th win in that time, and few can have come more convincingly than this.

Barcelona 2-0 Paris Saint-Germain (agg 5-1): Neymar completes emphatic victory

    1270812_heroa.jpg

Two more goals from Neymar helped Barcelona to a comfortable 5-1 aggregate win over Paris Saint-Germain, following their 2-0 win at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

Despite the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marco Verratti from suspension, PSG headed into Tuesday's quarter-final second leg with a mountain to climb having lost the first leg at Parc des Princes 3-1.

And the French champions never looked pulling off a remarkable comeback at Camp Nou, Neymar instead putting the tie beyond doubt with an excellent performance highlighted by two first-half goals.

The Brazil striker was the beneficiary of the sparkling creativity of Andres Iniesta as he netted an early opener, taking advantage of a fragile PSG defence without the services of injured captain Thiago Silva.

And a fine delivery from right-back Dani Alves, heavily linked with a transfer to PSG in the close-season, set Neymar up to head home his second - and his fifth in four games against the Ligue 1 champions this term - 11 minutes before the break.

From there, Luis Enrique's side proceeded to take their foot off the gas, coasting into the last four for the sixth time in the last seven seasons with a display that gives further credence to the idea that they could well win a Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey treble.

Barca needed just 14 minutes to break the deadlock thanks to a piece of brilliance from Iniesta.

The Spain star jinked his way beyond three players and played an expertly placed pass into the path of Neymar, who coolly rounded Salvatore Sirigu and tapped the ball into the empty net.

PSG responded well to going behind but only the reflexes of Sirigu prevented Barca from extending their lead soon after. The goalkeeper palmed a long-range strike from Dani Alves away and then kept out Neymar's header on the rebound.

But Sirigu could do nothing to stop Neymar from doubling his tally in the 34th minute as he was given the simple task of nodding home Dani Alves' excellent in-swinging right-wing cross.

Iniesta was withdrawn and replaced by Xavi at half-time and Barca did lose some of their attacking impetus in a low-key second half.

Yet they were rarely threatened by a PSG team, who never looked like they believed they could reverse last week's demoralising defeat at home.

Verratti lashed wide from the edge of the area and Ibrahimovic stung the palms of Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but that was all the visitors could muster as Barca - who nearly added a third through Lionel Messi in injury time - marched on in ominous fashion.

Monaco must be smart against Juve - Jardim

    leonardo-jardim-benfica-monaco-uefa-champions-league-04112014_19hdjydidlea61orxfl54zusle.jpg

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim says his side must "be smart" when they take on Juventus in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

The Italian side beat Monaco 1-0 in Turin in the first leg thanks to a goal from Arturo Vidal.

Jardim, though, believes his side can recover, insisting they are prepared to deal with whatever Massimiliano Allegri's men throw at them on Wednesday."We must be smart and know how to manage our game," he told reporters. "In the Champions League, we play a different style to what we play in Ligue 1.

"It's down to the players to make a difference on the pitch. We are ready to deal with any possible tactical set-up of Juventus."

Jardim also revealed experienced midfielder Jeremy Toulalan could yet play a part at Stade Louis II."We'll see tomorrow if Jeremy Toulalan can play. If he is not fit, Fabinho will play in the middle."

Defender Aymen Abdennour, meanwhile, is expecting a tough but enjoyable game.
"It will be a beautiful game, a challenge against one of the best teams in the world," he said."We're a young team but we have great ambition. We want to make it a great game."

Depay is like Cristiano Ronaldo - De Boer

    memphisdepay-cropped_jrlxjwh5qm3e13twpjpc3uqjo.jpg

Ronald de Boer believes PSV winger Memphis Depay is similar to Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.Depay has played a starring role in PSV's surge to the Eredivisie title this season and is the top scorer in the league with 20 goals to his name.

The Netherlands international - who also netted six goals in the Europa League this term - has been heavily linked with a move away from the Philips Stadion.

PSV technical director Marcel Brands revealed on Monday that Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are interested in Depay's services, with the Premier League club thought to be the front-runners for his signature, while Bayern Munich have also been linked to him.

And former Ajax, Barcelona and Netherlands star De Boer told talkSPORT: "He is one of the biggest talents in Europe. He has skill compared to a young Cristiano Ronaldo."He is very lively, technically unbelievable, very skilful, very fast, he has a great goalscoring record, he can shoot from every distance - he has everything.

"For me, he is without doubt one of the best talents we have in the Netherlands."
Asked about the club that would be best suited to Depay, De Boer added: "I don't want to say which club is more suitable for him, but if he goes to United he knows there is a Dutch coach Louis van Gaal there who knows him from the World Cup. That is an advantage."

Man United still undecided on Falcao, say Monaco

    1042322_heroa.jpg

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev says that Manchester United have yet to make a decision on whether they will sign Radamel Falcao permanently at the end of the season.

United signed the Colombia international in a £6 million loan deal in September, and hold the option to buy the striker outright for €55 million in the summer should they wish to.

However, Falcao has flattered to deceive at Old Trafford, scoring just four goals in 22 Premier League appearances thus far in 2014-15, and Vasilyev claims United are undecided over whether they will activate their clause to buy the 29-year-old.

"I saw Manchester United's board last Sunday & they've not decided whether to use Falcao's purchase clause," he told Nice Matin. “It’s not his best season, but they kept the opportunity to make a decision at the end of the season.”

Vasilyev also insists that a number of clubs are interested in signing Falcao, despite his poor season at Old Trafford, but says that they will wait to hear of United’s intentions before entering into negotiations with another club.

"We are not in other negotiations at the moment, even if other clubs are interested,” he added. “The decision is with Manchester United.”

When asked about Falcao's departure, Vasilyev acknowledged that the striker had suffered a number of "mishaps" at Monaco, and revealed that he fell out with manager Claudio Ranieri.

"He had mishaps in Monaco: he had problems with the coach, there was a misunderstanding and he was also seriously injured and missed the World Cup," he said. "In late August, he came to tell us that he wanted to play at a high level."

Mr Bee wants Ancelotti to coach AC Milan

    1248462_heroa.jpg

Bee Taechaubol will attempt to convince Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti to return for a second stint as AC Milan coach if he completes his takeover of the club as planned in the next week.

The Thai entrepreneur told La Repubblica that he will return to Milan on Sunday for a four-day trip during which he will sign a deal to buy a 65 per cent stake in the Rossoneri from Silvio Berlusconi, paying 25% immediately and another 40% within a year.

And he is expected to approach the Blancos coach regarding a return to the Milanello hot seat upon completing the deal, making the most of Ancelotti’s uncertain position at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid currently sit in second place in La Liga, two points behind leaders Barcelona, and face neighbours Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals. But Ancelotti’s stock has fallen in the mind of president Florentino Perez following their downturn in form in 2015 after a stellar run during the previous 12 months.

Mr Bee sees the 55-year-old as one of his two main targets, with Italy coach Antonio Conte also being considered. And while Ancelotti recently admitted that he prefers working away from his own country. However, he has said Milan is the only club he would return to, and the Thai is likely to do everything he can to persuade the three-time Champions League winning coach that he means business.
Ancelotti would form part of a backroom team which would include club legend Paolo Maldini as technical director, with financier Victor Pablo Dana as CEO.

While Barbara Berlusconi would stay with the club to head the commercial arm, current CEO and vice-president Adriano Galliani would play no part in the new era.

Galliani’s increasingly-diminishing role at the club is said to have been reflected by a greater ambivalence to goings-on in the corridors of power of late. The 70-year-old has worked with the club since Berlusconi’s purchase in 1986 and has been central to many of the key decisions made over the past quarter of a century, including installing Ancelotti as coach in 2001.

The Italian boss won two Champions League, one Serie A title, two Uefa Super Cups and the Club World Cup during his eight-year spell in charge at San Siro.

Koke: We can keep up streak against Real Madrid

    koke-fernando-torres-atletico-madrid-valencia-liga-bbva-08032015_1p7evegd0p51z114rrqnulenkx.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke believes his side can hold onto their unbeaten run over Real Madrid this season and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The two sides meet in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday after playing out a goalless draw in the Vicente Calderon last week.

It will be the eighth time the two sides clash this term, with Atletico unbeaten in the previous seven, and Koke is confident his side can get the better of Carlo Ancelotti's men in their own stadium.

"Winning is the most important thing - we have to score," he told reporters. "It will be 11 against 11; we don't care about the Real Madrid line-up. We have done well against Madrid in the last seven matches - we hope to win on Wednesday too.

The reigning European and world champions have been hit with a severe injury to Luka Modric, while Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema have also been ruled out of Wednesday's game, but Koke insists they will still be a strong unit.

"This is Real Madrid and whoever they play with, they have a great squad we have to do our job.

"We try to prepare every game in the best possible way, we are ready."Toni Kroos criticised Atletico for their tendency to put pressure on referees in matches, but Koke insists their game is built on much more.

"We go out there to do our jobs. We can talk to the referee, it's part of the game, but I don't think that is the basis of our game, we do more things than that."

Silva returns to training with Man City

    davidsilva-cropped_10eo4jbvu5rlh1l8zwykoc0xbj.jpg

Manchester City midfielder David Silva has returned to training after his injury scare during Sunday's 2-0 win over West Ham.

The Spain international was caught by an elbow from Cheikhou Kouyate during the game and City's medical staff subsequently administered oxygen to the stricken 29-year-old.

Manuel Pellegrini later confirmed that City feared Silva had broken his cheekbone, but scans showed that there was no fracture and he was able to take part in training on Tuesday.

Kouyate, who was booked for his part in the incident, took to Twitter to apologise, writing: "I would like to say to Silva that I am very sorry that you were injured during the match on Sunday, but it was not my intention.

"I went for the ball and my eyes were on the ball. I always play the ball and never the player. You are a great guy and a great player and I hope you are back on the field very soon."

City face Aston Villa this weekend, and the club will monitor Silva in the hope that he is available for selection.

Yaya Toure: I'll go where there are new challenges

    1196582_heroa.jpg

Yaya Toure has dropped a hint that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season as he is open to "new challenges" in his career.

Toure is set for with City over his future, but the 32-year-old has not ruled out an exit.

"No amount of wages will make me stay at a club if I feel that I no longer belong there or if no challenge exists for me," he told Foot Mercato.

"It would be unjust on my part. There comes a moment where numbers don't stop us, it goes beyond that, even if the English press seem more interested in the numbers than the sport itself.

"For the future, I don't know more than you do, because I will always go where I am offered new challenges. That is in my nature."

After guiding City to a second Premier League title last season with 20 goals from midfield, the Ivorian's displays have drastically decreased in quality since, prompting Manuel Pellegrini to single him out last week.

Toure's agent, Dimitri Seluk, retaliated by claiming City should allow the midfielder to leave if they are not happy with him, with former City boss Roberto Mancini talking publicly about his desire to bring him to Inter.

"When things are not necessarily going well in a club, the key players take the fall," Toure added:

"I am not the only one to have been attacked even if there is tendency to be harsher with me... Football is my passion, my job and that gives me two good reasons to do as well as I can.

"I accept criticism if it helps me to improve and I ignore them when their aim is simply to break me.

"When I arrived at City, Pellegrini was not the coach. Just like the players, managers arrive and leave. As I have said before, I owe it to the City fans to fight until the end of my career at this club.

"My decisions will not be affected by changes in management, but more by the challenges that will be offered to me."

Smalling signs new four-year Man United deal

    936582_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have confirmed that defender Chris Smalling has signed a new deal that ties him to the club until 2019.

The central defender has become a key player under Louis van Gaal in 2014-15, making 24 appearances in all competitions as United have chased Champions League qualification.

And he has now been rewarded for his fine form with a new deal, and Van Gaal has hailed the 25-year-old as "integral".

"Chris has improved and developed immensely during my time at the club, becoming an integral part of the first-team squad," the Dutchman told the club's official website.

Smalling also expressed his pride at committing his future to the club, and has vowed to do all he can to help return United to the top of the Premier League.

"I’m delighted to sign my new contract," he said. "I am so proud to play for such a great club. We have developed as a team over the course of the season under Louis van Gaal and we are now playing as a complete unit.

"This is a very exciting time to be at Manchester United, we are all determined to get back to where we belong and competing at the highest level."

Smalling joined United from Fulham in 2010 and has since made 147 appearances, winning two Premier League titles in the process.

De Bruyne wanted by Man City, reveals agent

    1107662_heroa.jpg

Kevin de Bruyne's agent Patrick de Koster says he has held discussions with Manchester City ahead of the summer transfer window.

De Bruyne has been in great form for Wolfsburg this season. The Belgium international has netted 10 league goals and tops the assist chart with 17 - seven more than second placed Zlatko Junuzovic - and has created a lot more chances than anyone else in the German top flight.

De Koster insists the 23-year-old is happy at Wolfsburg, but admits there is a huge amount of interest in him.

"I have met the people from Manchester City," he told The Guardian. "I’ve never spoken to anyone from Manchester United but a lot of other clubs have been in touch to find out some general information.

“I think with the season Kevin has had if we didn’t have these questions then there would be something wrong. I saw Mino Raiola’s quotes about taking 20 phone calls a day regarding Paul Pogba and it’s the same situation for me and probably for the agent of Memphis Depay at the moment.

“For the moment, there are no formal discussions. Of course in the next few weeks I will be going around the world to talk about the situation with Kevin but this is just informal information.

“I will talk to everybody but Kevin is very, very happy with Wolfsburg and the way they have treated him since he arrived from Chelsea last year. There are still five games to play and hopefully they can make sure of a place in the Champions League next season so it is a little bit too early to be making any decisions. He has a four-year contract at Wolfsburg so we will have to see what they want to do."

He also added his thoughts on the fee De Bruyne could command, saying: "I don’t know how much he would cost. Wolfsburg paid €24 million to Chelsea so I can see it being a lot more than that."

:)Di Maria gets Manchester United shirt number tattoo

    1042252_heroa.jpg

Angel Di Maria has had his Manchester United shirt number tattooed on his arm in an impressive showing of commitment to Louis van Gaal's side.

The Argentine was handed the No.7 shirt after becoming the club and British-record signing last summer for €75 million, previously worn by the likes of David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and Eric Cantona at Old Trafford.

Di Maria has struggled to settle into life in the Premier League, having lost his place to Ashley Young in United's midfield before the house him and his wife share was the target of an attempted buglary.

However, any talk of a summer exit could be meaningless with Di Maria proudly displaying his new inking.
