:cool:Van Gaal: Rooney fit to face West Brom

    waynerooney-cropped_1nsxzod9n9e1j1n3kfa0ifb9ye.jpg

Louis van Gaal has confirmed Wayne Rooney will be fit for Manchester United’s clash with West Brom.

The United captain suffered a knee injury late in last Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Everton and was considered a doubt for Saturday's Premier League fixture at Old Trafford.

"Rooney is fit to play, it was not so heavy as we expected," Van Gaal told MUTV.

"Wayne is very important for us, so I am very happy. [Phil] Jones is fit but we have to see his match rhythm, of course. But [Luke] Shaw has trouble with his groin so he cannot play."

Robin van Persie stepped up his recovery from an ankle injury he suffered in February by scoring twice for United’s Under-21s side on Monday evening, and Van Gaal has revealed the Dutch striker is in contention to feature against West Brom.

"He played 80 minutes, and I think that’s good,” said the United boss.

When you score two goals also, it gives a boost for the confidence of Robin. He can play but we have to wait and see if I let him play, of course."

Meanwhile, Jonny Evans has been ruled out due to a sciatic nerve problem.

"It is unbelievable,” said Van Gaal.

“For six weeks he had nothing and he could not play or participate in the selection [due to suspension] and then he had an injury. It is unbelievable, but it is true,” said Van Gaal.

Atletico Madrid 0-0 Athletic Bilbao: Champions desperately unlucky to not win stalemate

    1323592_heroa.jpg

Atletico Madrid had cause to feel aggrieved as they twice saw perfectly good goals ruled out in Saturday's 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao, who finished with 10 men.

Antoine Griezmann thought he had put Diego Simeone's side in front just before the interval, but his effort was correctly disallowed for an offside in the build-up.
However, the hosts then saw two strikes – from Griezmann and Tiago respectively – erroneously chalked off for offside in the second half.

Though Bilbao were reduced to 10 men late on when Unai Bustinza fouled Saul to earn his second booking, Atletico were unable to find an opening and had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Fernando Torres was rewarded for his midweek heroics with a start against Bilbao, who – despite being without top scorer Aritz Aduriz – almost took an early lead through Mikel San Jose, the midfielder heading wide after connecting with Andoni Iraola's corner.

It was the hosts who went close next when Raul Garcia, in for Arda Turan, clipped the right-hand post with a rasping volley from the edge of the box.Garcia had another opportunity as he rose highest to meet Koke's corner, but the Spaniard could only direct a tame header at Iago Herrerin.

Tempers threatened to boil over as half-time neared, as Torres went down in the box after a tussle with Xabier Etxeita, but the Milan loanee's appeals were waved away as he received a yellow card for simulation.

Griezmann, with eight goals in his previous six matches, looked as though he had put the hosts ahead soon after when he fired in from close range, but the goal was chalked off after Garcia had ventured beyond the last man earlier in the move.

Atletico's leading scorer struck again just after the restart – beating the offside trap and dispatching firmly into the bottom-left corner – but the celebrations were stemmed by the linesman's raised flag.

Despite their domination, Atletico would have fallen behind just before the hour if not for a brilliant stop from Jan Oblak, who did well to parry away San Jose's close-range strike.

There was further frustration to follow with 20 minutes remaining as the same official ruled out Tiago's tap-in, despite the Portuguese having been well onside when he latched onto a free-kick from substitute Turan.

Herrerin then repeated Oblak's heroics when he pulled off a superb stop from Griezmann's point-blank effort, somehow turning the winger's volley wide.

Bilbao were dealt a blow in stoppage time when Bustinza received a second yellow for dragging back Atletico substitute Saul, but the visitors survived to seal a point and move up into seventh.

Sampdoria 0-1 Juventus: Vidal strike clinches Serie A title

    arturo-vidal-juventus_1bfboynvznroj117gc4hc39yg6.jpg

An Arturo Vidal strike saw Juventus clinch the Serie A title for a fourth straight year as they beat Sampdoria 1-0 on Saturday evening.

The Chile midfielder was left unmarked to head home after 32 minutes at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and that was enough to continue Juve's domestic dominance.

Massimiliano Allegri's side now head into Tuesday's Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid with a historic treble in their sights, having already secured their place in the Coppa Italia final.Sampdoria made a confident start to the match, with Pedro Obiang sending a blistering strike narrowly wide from the edge of the area.

Juve settled as Stefano Sturaro bustled into the box and saw an effort charged down by Matias Silvestre in the 19th minute, while Fernando Llorente blazed over on the volley before Luis Muriel failed to turn home Samuel Eto'o's cross on the break.

Vidal engineered space for a tamely hit drive in the 25th minute, but he made no mistake when the chance arrived to break the deadlock, heading Stephan Lichtsteiner's left-footed cross back across goal and in off the upright.

The hosts were forced into an early change as Vasco Regini replaced fellow left-back Djamel Mesbah, although they could have been level two minutes before the break.

The lively Muriel slid a pass through for Roberto Soriano to break into the Juventus box, but the midfielder's attempt squirmed wide of the far post - too far ahead of the on-rushing Eto'o.Sampdoria goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano then produced a save of the highest order to keep Tevez's low strike out of the bottom corner after 58 minutes.

Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci made a vital last-ditch challenge to thwart Gonzalo Bergessio at the other end, but it was a rare moment of encouragement for Sinisa Mihajlovic's team.

Viviano kept out skidding low shots from Tevez and Claudio Marchisio but it mattered little as Allegri's side saw the game out with ease to clinch yet another league title.

    Juventus crowned Serie A champions

    1324062_heroa.jpg

Juventus were crowned Serie A champions for the fourth season in a row following their 1-0 win over Sampdoria on Saturday.

Arturo Vidal scored the only goal of the game in the first half, heading home from Stephan Lichtsteiner's cross, to spark wild celebrations among the Bianconeri faithful.

Massimiliano Allegri's men are now 17 points clear at the top of the table with five games still to play and now cannot be caught by closest challengers Lazio and Roma.

After matchday four, Juve spent only one week off top spot as they remained the dominant force yet again in the Italian top flight.

Allegri replaced Antonio Conte as coach last summer and has also taken Juventus to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in 12 years. The Turin-outfit play Real Madrid at home in the first leg on Tuesday.

An historic treble is still on the cards, with Juve also in the Coppa Italia final where they will play Lazio. The Old Lady has not won the Italian Cup since 1995.

Cordoba 0-8 Barcelona: Suarez hits hat-trick in Catalan romp

    1323202_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez continued his fine form with a stunning hat-trick as Barcelona took another step towards winning La Liga with an 8-0 win away at Cordoba.

The game was goalless until Ivan Rakitic's 37th-minute opener, which saw Cordoba's resilience quickly crumble, as Suarez made it 2-0 to the visitors soon after.

Messi added his 50th goal of the season across all competitions just after the restart and Suarez doubled his tally seven minutes later, before Gerard Pique headed in the fifth with 63 minutes played.

Messi netted his second with a tap-in 10 minutes from time, before Neymar and Suarez rounded off another stunning performance from Barca, with the Uruguayan clinching his hat-trick and relegating Cordoba in humiliating fashion.

Despite the fact Bayern Munich await in the Champions League semi-finals next week, Luis Enrique surprisingly opted against resting key players and named arguably his strongest starting XI.

The away side were in complete control of proceedings right from the start, though Cordoba initially looked resolute at the back, keeping Messi, Suarez and Neymar at bay.

Cordoba's defence began to show signs of frailty in the 27th minute, as Messi weaved through in stunning style, skipping past four challenges before dragging a tame finish straight at Juan Carlos in the hosts' goal. But Barca's patience finally paid off soon after.

Once again Messi was the architect, clipping a delightful delivery into the left side of the area for Rakitic, who brought the ball down and smashed an unstoppable half-volley into the roof of the net. And their second followed swiftly on the stroke of half-time, Suarez racing on to Andres Iniesta's cross and guiding the ball beyond the helpless Juan Carlos.

Messi eventually got his name on the scoresheet in the first minute of the second half, arriving late in the penalty area before guiding a precise header into the bottom-left corner.

Cordoba's heads dropped and Barca continued to pile forward ruthlessly, opening up a four-goal lead in the 53rd minute, as Suarez glanced Dani Alves' right-wing cross in off the post with his head. The visitors were completely dominant and added their fifth just after the hour mark, Pique rising highest to meet Rakitic's corner and nod in.

After a 15-minute respite for Cordoba, Messi tapped in following good work from Suarez, while Neymar netted an 85th-minute penalty after he had been hauled down.

There was still time for Suarez to add to an already embarrassing day for Cordoba, the Uruguay star knocking into an open net after pouncing on a blocked shot two minutes from time, wrapping things up and sending a warning shot to Bayern.

Sunderland 2-1 Southampton: Penalty king Gomez secures vital three points

    1323232_heroa.jpg

Jordi Gomez scored two penalties as Sunderland boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a 2-1 victory over 10-man Southampton.

Having seen Leicester City beat Newcastle United 3-0 earlier in the day, Sunderland needed maximum points in their penultimate home game of the season at the Stadium of Light on Saturday to avoid being cut adrift in the bottom three.

And they were given a helping hand thanks to some haphazard defending from Southampton in a game that stood in stark contrast to the 8-0 hammering Sunderland suffered at St Mary's Stadium in the reverse fixture in October.

Gomez opened the scoring for Dick Advocaat's men in the 21st minute with a coolly converted spot-kick following Jose Fonte's foul on Danny Graham.

Sunderland had barely finished celebrating when Sadio Mane took advantage of a calamitous defensive error less than two minutes later.

However, the home side were given another lifeline as James Ward-Prowse was sent off for bringing down Jermain Defoe, with midfielder Gomez stepping up to score a 55th-minute winner and move the Wearsiders to within a point of safety.

A seemingly innocuous long ball forward gave Gomez the opportunity to put Sunderland in front as Fonte felled Graham after Maya Yoshida had failed to clear.

Gomez stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner, but the lead lasted just 78 seconds, Mane capitalising on a breakdown in communication in the Sunderland defence.

Costel Pantilimon collided with Sebastian Coates and John O'Shea as he came to collect Fonte's ball forward and Mane made no mistake in pouncing on the goalkeeper's fumble and tucking into the empty net.

Things then got worse for Sunderland when captain O'Shea - who had received treatment following an earlier collision with Shane Long - came off with an injury to be replaced by Santiago Vergini.

Yet Sunderland saw a great chance to retake the lead go begging, Connor Wickham firing over the crossbar at the end of a well-worked attacking move down the left flank.

The hosts were denied the opportunity to go into the break with their advantage restored after Kelvin Davis produced a fine finger-tip save to keep out Defoe's point-blank header.

But nine minutes after the restart the game took a major swing in Sunderland's favour when Ward-Prowse bundled Defoe over as the striker attempted to race onto Graham's lay-off.

Referee Mike Jones showed no hesitation in brandishing the red card and Gomez again kept his cool from the spot with a confidently taken penalty.

Mane then limped off and was replaced by Eljero Elia in another blow to Southampton's hopes of a top-six finish on a disappointing day for the south-coast club.

Southampton never threatened a late equaliser, but the win for Leicester and Aston Villa's 3-2 success against Everton mean that Sunderland still have plenty of work to do in a tight battle against the drop.

West Ham 1-0 Burnley: Clarets look down and out after Noble penalty

    1322852_heroa.jpg

Mark Noble's penalty was enough for West Ham to see off 10-man Burnley 1-0 and leave Sean Dyche's men on the brink of Premier League relegation.

Saturday's contest at Upton Park was settled when Michael Duff chopped down Cheikhou Kouyate in the 24th minute, with the defender unlucky to receive a red card for the challenge.Noble sent goalkeeper Tom Heaton the wrong way from the resulting spot-kick and that was enough for West Ham to collect just a third league win of 2015.

Rock-bottom Burnley - who have three games remaining - are now eight points adrift of Leicester City and Hull City, while the gap to Newcastle United and Aston Villa is nine. If Burnley lose at Hull next weekend then the Lancashire will be back playing in the Championship next season.

A lack of goals has been Burnley's trouble and they have now drawn blanks in six straight matches, as Danny Ings and Ashley Barnes both saw good chances go begging in the first half. Both teams had chances in a lively second half, but one goal was enough for Sam Allardyce's side to end a four-match winless run.

West Ham created the first opportunity in the third minute when Enner Valencia failed to put the finishing touch on Aaron Cresswell's teasing delivery across the six-yard box.

After a slow start Burnley came into the game and Ings put a free header from eight yards over the crossbar from Matt Taylor's excellent left-wing cross.

The flashpoint of the half came when Kouyate burst in to the penalty area and was clumsily tripped by Duff, resulting in referee Jon Moss producing a harsh dismissal for the veteran centre-back.West Ham took full advantage as Noble put his penalty into the bottom right-hand corner.

With the extra man, West Ham turned the screw and Heaton made a stunning point-blank save from Valencia's close-range effort.

Burnley opted to stick with two strikers and Barnes - who returned from suspension in place of Lukas Jutkiewicz - saw a fantastic header from Kieran Trippier's corner saved expertly by the feet of Adrian.

The second half burst into life in the 58th minute when Morgan Amalfitano - brought into West Ham's starting XI at the expense of Matt Jarvis - curled wide from the left of the penalty area.

Burnley went up the other end and Taylor's low drive brought the best out of Adrian, while Nolan shot straight at Heaton in the area.

Stewart Downing then went into the book for simulation when he went to ground under Ben Mee's challenge in the penalty area, with Moss feeling any contact was not enough to warrant a foul.

The closing stages typified Burnley's season as they showed plenty of endeavour but little goal threat. And it was West Ham who created the better late chances - substitute Carlton Cole heading over before Kouyate had a late snatched shot cleared off the goalline.

Swansea City 2-0 Stoke City: Ki & Montero seals three points for Monk’s men

    458278_heroa.jpg

Jefferson Montero scored his first Swansea City goal as the Welsh club earned a 2-0 Premier League victory over 10-man Stoke City on Saturday.

The Ecuadorian stooped at the far post to head in a Jonjo Shelvey cross after 76 minutes, before substitute Ki Sung-yueng made sure of the points in stoppage time, pulling Swansea within four points of seventh-placed Southampton.

Both sides are looking to secure their best Premier League finish, having previously peaked at ninth, but the first half passed by with little incident – Steven N'Zonzi's late dipping effort, saved by Lukasz Fabianski, as close as either team came to opening the scoring.

The hosts stepped up their game in the second period and looked the most likely to go ahead, but Gylfi Sigurdsson squandered a glorious opportunity to put his side in front when he headed over from close range seven minutes into the second half.

Montero finally broke the deadlock with 14 minutes left to play, and Ki wrapped up Swansea's victory with a straightforward finish after Stoke had seen Marc Wilson sent off for a second bookable offence.

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic - at fault for Sunderland's opener in a 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium last weekend - dropped out of Stoke's matchday squad, while Neil Taylor returned from suspension to feature at left-back for Swansea.

The home side had concerns for their own goalkeeper, Fabianski, in the opening minutes following a coming together with Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam - playing with a broken nose - and the Pole was almost caught in possession by Mame Biram Diouf moments later.

But chances were at a premium for both sides for much of a stop-start opening period, with Nelson Oliveira, who was later forced off with an ankle injury, firing into the side-netting from a Montero cross as one of few promising situations fizzled out.

Shelvey guided a tame 20-yard effort into the arms of Butland five minutes from the break, marking the game's first shot on target, and N'Zonzi had Fabianski sprawling before time was up with a dipping effort from just outside the box - the Swansea stopper touching over.

Sigurdsson rattled the crossbar with a terrific effort from just inside the penalty area shortly after the restart, before Diouf escaped a yellow card for an apparent dive in the penalty area, evoking memories of Victor Moses' tumble that controversially earned Stoke a spot-kick in the reverse fixture, which ended 2-1 in favour of Hughes' men.

Sigurdsson, unmarked, then headed over from six yards out, and Marko Arnautovic could maybe count himself lucky to avoid being sent off for catching Nathan Dyer with his studs showing as the match approached the hour mark.

Another chance for Swansea came and went as Sigurdsson saw an effort deflected wide from the centre of the box, but Montero eventually made the breakthrough.

Shelvey beat Erik Pieters out on the right, before Montero shrugged off Phil Bardsley to head home at the far post.

Things went from bad to worse for Stoke when Wilson was sent off for a second bookable offence, their first red card of the season, although Butland pulled off a superb save to deny Shelvey from the resulting free-kick.

Holes began to appear all over the pitch for Stoke as they chased an equaliser, and Ki was left with a tap-in from another Shelvey assist in stoppage time.

Aston Villa 3-2 Everton: Benteke double fires Sherwood’s men closer to safety

    1323182_heroa.jpg

Christian Benteke continued to haul Aston Villa closer to Premier League safety, scoring a crucial brace in his side's 3-2 victory over Everton at Villa Park.

The Belgian has been revitalised following Tim Sherwood's arrival in February, and was at the double before the break to help move Villa into 14th - albeit still only two points clear of the bottom three after Sunderland also won on Saturday.

Benteke scored at either end of the first half to earn the FA Cup finalists a two-goal lead that their dominance deserved.

Roberto Martinez's Everton - lacklustre prior to the break - were afforded a way back into the game when Romelu Lukaku joined his compatriot on the scoresheet with a penalty before the hour mark.

However, Tom Cleverley scored for a second week running just five minutes later to further bolster Villa's survival hopes and leave Martinez scratching his head.

Everton, so positive in their 3-0 win over Manchester United last time out, were undone by a confident Villa side despite a scrappy late header from Phil Jagielka.

Both sides started relatively slowly despite promising recent form, but Benteke glanced an early header wide before going one better soon after.

The excellent Fabian Delph's looping cross found the Belgian, who held off Jagielka and John Stones to head home his seventh goal in six games.

The returning Charles N'Zogbia tested Tim Howard soon after as Villa continued to enjoy the upper hand.

Aston Villa gave Shay Given his first top-flight appearance in almost three years but the Irishman was barely troubled in the first 45 minutes as Everton failed to muster an effort on target.

Benteke again made the most of slack defending on the stroke of half-time as he lost his marker and converted Ron Vlaar's knockdown at the far post.

Lukaku took advantage of space in the Villa ranks to threaten with a strike shortly after the restart.

The Everton striker continued to cause problems before the hour as his meandering run led to chaos in the area, with Vlaar felling Naismith - allowing Lukaku to give the visitors hope from the spot.

That was short-lived however, as Cleverley latched on to Leandro Bacuna's delightful pass to restore Villa's two-goal cushion, the midfielder clipping the ball past Howard.

Jagielka nodded in a second Everton goal from close range in stoppage time, amid suspicions of a foul by Seamus Coleman on Given, but Villa deservedly claimed the points to dent the visitors' top-half aspirations.

Liverpool 2-1 QPR: Gerrard atones for penalty miss with late winner

    1289312_heroa.jpg

Steven Gerrard went from villain to hero within the space of eight minutes as Liverpool overcame a spirited QPR to claim all three points at Anfield.

Gerrard rose highest to nod in a Coutinho corner on 87 minutes soon after seeing a penalty saved by Robert Green as he marked his penultimate match at Anfield with a winning goal.

Leroy Fer had earlier bundled in a corner to cancel out Coutinho's beautifully-worked first-half opener and give QPR hope in their increasingly forlorn battle against relegation, but Gerrard had the final word.

Nedum Onuoha collected a second booking for a rash foul on substitute Jordon Ibe and QPR were unable to hang on as the Liverpool captain planted a header past Green.

The defeat means QPR are seven points from safety with three games remaining and Chris Ramsey's men could be relegated by the time they take to the field at Manchester City next Sunday.

Liverpool edge nearer to a Europa League spot and manager Brendan Rodgers will have enjoyed Gerrard stealing the headlines from a plane that flew over Anfield before kick-off, sporting a banner calling for him to be replaced by former boss Rafael Benitez.

Gerrard returned for Liverpool alongside Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert, as both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect following the passing of QPR defender Rio Ferdinand's wife Rebecca Ellison.

Fer - starting ahead of Bobby Zamora in QPR's only change - had the ball in the net within the first minute, but the officials ruled that Matt Phillips' scuffed corner went out of play.Phillips sent a more convincing delivery into the Liverpool box in the eighth minute, but Steven Caulker was unable to turn an acrobatic volley home.

Lambert was making a first Premier League start in attack since December and he capitalised on an error from Rangers captain Joey Barton to thud a 20-yard drive into the arms of Green.

The hosts had hit their stride by the time Lambert cut a ball across the area for Coutinho, who took a touch before stylishly finding the top corner. An offside flag denied Raheem Sterling when he converted on the end of a deft backheel from Jordan Henderson in the 33rd minute.

QPR top scorer Charlie Austin blazed wide on the turn during an increasingly rare attack for Ramsey's men, while Green kept out a Gerrard free-kick.

Lallana wasted a glorious chance five minutes into the second half as Coutinho unpicked a flagging QPR defence - now without Caulker due to a suspected broken hand. That miss was surpassed by England team-mate Sterling, who lifted over from close range four minutes later when found by a wonderful Henderson cross.

There was little let-up from the home side, with Green saving from Lambert and Dejan Lovren either side of a Gerrard strike being deflected wide by Clint Hill.
Liverpool rued their poor finishing when Fer was allowed ample room to volley home from Barton's right-wing set-piece.

Green's heroics and something far less desirable from Onuoha then set the stage for a Gerrard to send the Kop into familiar raptures.
