:love:Manchester United 1-1 Arsenal: Walcott rescues point for Gunners

    1399102_heroa.jpg

Manchester United missed out on the chance to climb to third in the table as Theo Walcott's deflected strike secured a point for Arsenal.

Ander Herrera gave United the lead in the first half as he volleyed in Ashley Young's left-wing cross at the back post.

But the Gunners had the better of things after the break, with David De Gea saving well from Olivier Giroud.

The Red Devils goalkeeper was unable to see out the 90 minutes, however, as he limped off with a back injury, though that did allow Victor Valdes to make his debut for the club.

But the former Barcelona man's first outing for United ended in disappointment as Walcott's cross deflected off Tyler Blackett and over the helpless goalkeeper.

The result means Arsenal remain two points above fourth-placed United in the Premier League and can avoid a potentially tricky Champions League play-off tie by beating relegation-threatened Sunderland in their midweek game in hand.

Manchester City are guaranteed a top-three finish following their 4-2 win over Swansea City earlier on Sunday.

Marcos Rojo and Radamel Falcao replaced injured duo Luke Shaw and Wayne Rooney for United, with Chris Smalling taking the captain's armband in the latter's absence.

An unchanged Arsenal failed to make much of an impression during a quiet opening to the game, Falcao enjoying the only opening of note when a fine challenge from Laurent Koscielny denied him on the end of Juan Mata's pass.

Mata struck a free-kick from the edge of the area into David Ospina's arms before a mix-up between De Gea and Phil Jones almost presented Olivier Giroud with a chance to open the scoring.

The first goal fell United's way shortly afterwards in the 30th minute. Young sent in a searching cross from the left and Arsenal's defenders were drawn towards Marouane Fellaini, leaving Herrera with room to slam home a volley at the back post.

Smalling inadvertently blocked a drive from team-mate Daley Blind as a lacklustre Arsenal limped towards half-time.

Alexis Sanchez had been largely starved of service by the time he sliced wildly over from Giroud's flick on.

United continued to control the early second-half play, with Mata to the fore.

The Spanish schemer was unable to create a goal for on-loan Monaco striker Falcao, who waved an apparent farewell to the Old Trafford faithful in United's final home game when he made way for Robin van Persie after the hour.

A De Gea departure would be harder for United supporters to stomach and the goalkeeper was serenaded from the terraces when he saved with his feet from Giroud.

With 20 minutes remaining, Aaron Ramsey was able to lift the ball over De Gea, but Rojo made up for losing the Arsenal midfielder's run by making a vital clearance.

A back injury ended De Gea's afternoon early, heralding a belated United debut for Victor Valdes.

And the former Barcelona man was beaten when Walcott collected a raking pass from the excellent Ramsey and his effort across goal spun in off Blackett.

Giroud then rippled the side netting as Arsenal pressed for the win with an urgency they badly lacked before half-time - although Van Persie almost caught them out when he lashed over in the 88th minute.

Swansea City 2-4 Manchester City: Hart saves visitors after Toure double

    1397652_heroa.jpg

Two goals from Yaya Toure helped Manchester City to victory as they saw off Swansea City in an entertaining clash.

Toure opened the scoring as his effort from the edge of the area deflected in off Ashley Williams before James Milner doubled City's lead following a swift counterattack.

Gylfi Sigurdsson pulled one back for the Swans just before half-time before Bafetimbi Gomis levelled matters after latching onto Ashley Richards' crossfield ball.

But Toure put City back ahead as he beat Lukasz Fabianski at his near post with a powerful drive, and after Joe Hart made two fine saves to deny Federico Fernandez and Gomis, Wilfried Bony made the points safe with a placed finish in stoppage time against his former side.

Toure returned to the Manchester City starting XI in place of Fernando, while Richards replaced the injured Angel Rangel for Swansea and Gomis came in for Ki Sung-Yueng, who has been ruled out for the rest of the season following knee surgery.

And the French striker was heavily involved from the off as he drew an early save from Hart before scooping over from a Jefferson Montero cut-back.

The visitors were almost caught out when Nathan Dyer robbed a ponderous Eliaquim Mangala of the ball in a dangerous area, but saw his eventual strike touched wide by Hart.

Sergio Aguero then had an effort correctly ruled out for offside, but Toure fired his side in front with a shot from just inside the box that deflected off Swansea captain Williams and snuck past goalkeeper Fabianski, who might feel he should have done better.

And City doubled their lead nine minutes before the break – Aguero taking out Richards with a clever pass before Milner cut inside Neil Taylor to guide the ball beyond Fabianski.

Swansea could count themselves unfortunate to be 2-0 down, but Sigurdsson buried a shot in the bottom right-hand corner on the stroke of half-time to reduce the deficit.

Fabianski had to be alert in the early stages of the second half as he kept out efforts from Mangala, David Silva and substitute Jesus Navas, while Jonjo Shelvey forced Hart into a diving save at the other end.

Gomis' leveller came courtesy of a delightful Richards ball over the top, which the frontman brought down superbly and fired across Hart.

Swansea's fightback was to garner no reward, though, as Toure sent City back in front with a low strike to the bottom right-hand corner, before Hart pulled off one of the saves of the season to keep out a Fernandez header and kept out another Gomis effort moments later.

Home fans afforded Bony a warm reception when he was brought on for the last five minutes, but the Ivorian responded by wrapping up the win in stoppage time, as Swansea's slim hopes of Europa League qualification fizzled out.

Inzaghi: I still have so much to offer Milan

    filippo-inzaghi-milan_wy8dad5nhw4s1hadyi02e6mm3.jpg

Filippo Inzaghi has pleaded to be kept on as AC Milan coach, insisting that he still has "so much to offer" the Serie A strugglers.

The former San Siro favourite took charge of the senior squad last summer, after two years running the Primavera, the club's Under-19s, but has endured a difficult debut season at the helm.

Indeed, a dramatic dip in form since the turn of the year killed all hope of European qualification and Sunday's 3-2 defeat at Sassuolo means that 10th-placed Milan now run the risk of finishing in the bottom half of the table.

However, Inzaghi not only feels that there were mitigating circumstances in relation to the Rossoneri's latest loss - the first of Domenico Berardi's three goals didn't cross the line, while Giacomo Bonaventura picked up a second yellow for handball - but that he is still the right man for the job.

"I'm honoured to be here," the ex-Italy international told Sky Sport Italia. "I have so much still to give and I would like to stay."I would prefer if this season never finished. I want to help this team grow and I would like to play this game again, with 11 against 11.

"Also, in terms of the first goal, the ball didn't cross the line, while the second was maybe offside.

"It's hard to react when things like this happen but the team did very well to recover."Then, while we were bossing the game, Bonaventura's doubtful dismissal happened and it's difficult to play with 10 when it's 30 degrees.

"It's difficult to comment on a game like this. One struggles to speak about football.
"With Bonaventura still on the field, things would have been different. We have still done well.

"I saw good things but certain decisions affected the game too much.
"We wanted to win but didn't manage to because of peculiar situations."
Milan wrap up their Serie A campaign with a home game against Torino next Sunday followed by a trip to Bergamo to face Atalanta.

Sassuolo 3-2 AC Milan: Brilliant Berardi hits hat-trick against nine-man Rossoneri

    domenicoberardi-cropped_srpluiuw4oir1gvkobplpihcy.jpg

Domenico Berardi returned to haunt AC Milan once again as he grabbed a hat-trick in Sassuolo's 3-2 Serie A home win over the Rossoneri, who finished with nine men.

The 20-year-old striker scored all four goals in the corresponding fixture last season as Sassuolo won 4-3 and was the thorn in Milan's side once again on Sunday.

Berardi opened the scoring with a goal that owed as much to an error from Diego Lopez as his own quality, the ball squirming away from the goalkeeper before being adjudged to have crossed the line.

His second was more clear cut as he raced away from the static Milan defence to volley past Lopez, but Giacomo Bonaventura ensured the visitors remained in the game with his fifth of the season.

Alex then drew Milan level early in the second half as Andrea Consigli failed to collect Suso's right-wing cross, but soon after Inzaghi's side were down to 10 as Bonaventura was dismissed for a second booking.

Eventually Sassuolo's extra man paid dividends as Berardi secured all three points with a close-range finish, completing a league double over Milan, who also had Suso sent off in stoppage time.

Milan edged a cagey opening with Keisuke Honda particularly lively on the right, but despite their early pressure the visitors found themselves behind after 13 minutes – albeit in controversial circumstances.

Berardi's speculative effort from 25 yards spun out of Lopez's hands and trickled towards the net, with the assistant behind the goal deeming that the goalkeeper was unable to prevent the ball from crossing the line as he scrambled to collect it.

Milan continued to enjoy a greater share of possession, but their defensive frailties returned just after the half hour as Berardi doubled Sassuolo's lead, the striker beating the offside trap before volleying past Lopez.

That goal finally got a response from Milan – much to the relief of Inzaghi – as Bonaventura halved the deficit after 33 minutes, the Italy international cutting in from the right and poking past Consigli after beating two defenders.

And Mattia Destro should have sent the visitors into the break level, but the on-loan forward headed wide after Consigli parried Honda's shot.

They did not have to wait long for the equaliser, though, as Alex restored parity six minutes after the restart, the former Chelsea defender climbing above Consigli to head home half-time substitute Suso's cross.

Milan may have been level but they were not making it easy for themselves as Bonaventura was shown a red card just before the hour, the forward receiving a second yellow card for handball.

Sassuolo put their man advantage to good use as Berardi, moments after being denied by a superb Lopez save, sealed victory with a poacher's finish, the striker poking under the goalkeeper from a Simone Zaza flick.

Suso's red card in stoppage time compounded a bad day at the office for Milan and they could yet finish in the bottom half.

Manchester City target De Bruyne is unsellable, insist Wolfsburg

    kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg-europa-league_1bne4fkc02vsn1ppf88zb1ouzh.jpg

Wolfsburg have warned Manchester City and their rival suitors that star playmaker Kevin De Bruyne is "unsellable".

De Bruyne has established himself as one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe with a remarkable season that has seen him notch 15 goals and 25 assists in all competitions.

Last month the Belgian's agent, Patrick De Koster, revealed that City, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich had expressed an interest in signing his client, but Wolfsburg CEO Klaus Allofs insists his club have no desire to part with their prized asset.

"At the moment, I'd call him unsellable," he told German TV show 'Doppelpass' when asked about De Bruyne. "I am 100 per cent convinced he will play for us next year.

"However, in football things can develop so rapidly, that you can't say this now."

Earlier this week De Bruyne refused to rule out the possibility of leaving Wolfsburg - despite insisting he is happy to stay at the club next season.

Van Gaal: I decide which players come to Manchester United, not Ed Woodward

    1396942_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists he calls the shots when it comes to player recruitment at Old Trafford.

United spent upwards of €207 million last summer on Angel Di Maria, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and a €8m loan deal for Radamel Falcao.

Rivals Liverpool also spent big 12 months ago but use a transfer committee system which sees multiple figures have an input into potential acquisitions, but Van Gaal says he is in sole control of arrivals.

"The club shall negotiate and then it's out of my hands because I am not negotiating and Ed Woodward is doing that," he told reporters. "I'm not the man who decides that.

"I don't spend the money. I have explained how it works. I look for the players who fit in our profile and then I say to Ed Woodward, 'okay, I want this player in the first position and the second option is that player and then we go to third when they are not available.'

"But he is negotiating, I am not negotiating. I'm not buying. For me, money is not important because the most expensive players are not playing with me or playing with me, you have to do what we want to do as a team."

With a top-four place confirmed following Liverpool's defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday, United will strengthen their squad this summer and have been linked with mega-money moves for Real Madrid's Gareth Bale and Juventus star Paul Pogba.

Di Maria moved to Old Trafford for a British-record £59.7m last August but has struggled to make an impact so far and Van Gaal says that a player's flexibility is a better indicator of their suitability than their pricetag.

"I think the team is always better than the individual player," he added. "Okay, I think when a player like [Lionel] Messi or [Cristiano] Ronaldo or Bale can contribute in that philosophy then they are pleased to come.

"But you never know about a player of £80m because it is not the money playing but the person is playing. He has to perform the way we want to perform as a club as Manchester United.

"So when you buy players of £80m, the pressure is unbelievably high. It's not so easy for the player either. It's always [dependent] on whether he can perform in the way we want so that's the most important thing."

'Guardiola would take Brazil job without thinking'

    pep-guardiola-fc-bayern-munchen-22032015_qwu673s10c1w11b0410y8c6vc.jpg

Former Santos and Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio claims Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola told him he dreams of coaching Brazil and would take the job without hesitation.

The 44-year-old was linked with the position following Mano Menezes’ dismissal in June 2012, but CBF president Joe Maria refused to appoint a foreign coach for the first time in their history.

Luiz Felipe Scolari was handed the role but the Selecao’s dreams of a first world title on home soil ended in disaster with a 7-1 semi-final defeat to eventual winners Germany.

"Guardiola told me that he dreams of coaching the Brazilian national team, and he would accept an invitation without thinking,” Julio Sergio, who spent time with Guardiola at Bayern earlier this year as he prepares for a coaching career, told ESPN.

“He also said he wanted to lead Brazil in the 2014 World Cup and assured me that if he was the coach, and had Neymar, he would have been champion.”The 44-year-old has recently been tipped to quit his current club before declaring his intention to see out the remaining 12 months of his contract last week.

Brazil, meanwhile, have recovered well from last summer's tournament, winning eight consecutive games under new coach Dunga ahead of next month's Copa America in Chile.

    I'm sorry I didn't join Liverpool - Konoplyanka

    1238532_heroa.jpg

Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka says he regrets not being able to join Liverpool last January.

The Reds tried to sign Konoplyanka right up until the 2014 winter transfer window closed, but came away empty handed despite lengthy negotiations.

And the Ukraine winger says he would have liked to make the move to Anfield, but hopes his side's upcoming Europa League final against Sevilla will ease the pain.

He told Sportske Novosti: "I am sorry I didn't join Liverpool when they wanted me but this Europa League final will help me get over that!"

Konoplyanka, alongside Nikola Kalinic, Bruno Gama, Douglas and goalkeeper Denys Boyko, has played all 14 of Dnipro's matches in their impressive run to the Warsaw final on May 27.

Gerrard: I'd be half Ferguson, half Wenger as a manager

    steven-gerrard-liverpool_1qj9ypy22el1511pf4izhdmknk.jpg

Departing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says he would pitch himself as halfway between Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger if he moves into management after his playing days.

The midfielder played his final home game for the Reds on Saturday as his side were beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace and, though LA Galaxy are next on his list, he is already thinking about what he could do after hanging up his boots.

"I must be a bit bonkers to want to be a manager but I certainly want to keep the connection with the club and leave everything open for the future," he told the press.

"I wouldn't mind being either Fergie or Wenger because both have been very successful managers. I think I'll be somewhere in the middle.

"What I have tried to do with managers I have worked with down the years is to write notes on them all. I've kept an eye on the sessions the players have liked and always tried to remember the one-liners or bits of advice, whether good or bad.

"It's not a big suitcase full of notebooks but there's some important stuff that might help me in the future."

However, Gerrard refuses to see the possibility of managing his beloved team as a sure thing, keenly aware that failure in the dugout at Anfield can be "brutal".

He reasoned: "If I feel I am good enough and can contribute and the role is offered to me, I would consider it really seriously but, if I don't feel I am good enough and there is a danger of ruining my reputation, I won't go near it.

"This is a brutal club to get it wrong at. Look what happened with Roy Hodgson - he never got time and, in a short space of time, he was out."

:cool:Manchester United-bound Depay finishes as Eredivisie's top scorer

    memphis-depay-go-ahead-eagles-psv-eredivisie-03072015_1f1sd9nqu0ax1p0ygs3ua3gt6.jpg

Manchester United-bound winger Memphis Depay has brought the curtain down on his PSV career by finishing as the Eredvisie's top scorer for the 2014-15 campaign.

The Netherlands international, who will move to Old Trafford this summer, failed to add to his tally of 22 goals on the final day of season, though he did tee up team-mate Luuk de Jong for a goal in Sunday's 3-2 win at Den Haag.

However, even with that strike, former Newcastle United forward De Jong still finished two goals behind Depay in the battle for the top scorer award.

Depay's achievement is made all the more remarkable for the fact that he only struck 17 times in his three previous seasons in the Eredivisie.

However, the 21-year-old's development into a free-scoring forward played a massive role in PSV finishing 17 points clear of reigning champions Ajax to claim their first Dutch title since 2008.

Elsewhere, Michael de Leeuw hit a sensational hat-trick in his side's dramatic 5-4 win at NAC to claim a share of third place alongside Den Haag attacker Michiel Kramer, with the pair ending with 17 goals apiece, while Mark Uth came home fifth, after netting 15 times for Heerenveen.

Bony: Strange to score against Swansea

    bonywilliams-cropped_1lvxqgjaz8mce1fuugbgeb5fxn.jpg

Wilfried Bony likened his goal against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium to scoring in his back garden after Manchester City earned a hard-fought 4-2 win on Sunday.

The Ivorian striker netted City's fourth in south Wales, adding to James Milner's opener and a Yaya Toure double, while Gylfi Sigurdsson and Bafetimbi Gomis found the net for the hosts.

Bony joined City in a €37 million deal in January having scored 34 goals in 70 appearances for Garry Monk's side, but has made just two starts for his new club as Sergio Aguero continues to impress in the lone striker role.

"It's crazy for me to come here and not go left to the home dressing room," the Ivorian told BBC Sport. "But that's the way football works. I have to adapt to that.

"The Swansea fans gave me a good reception and good motivation too. When I got a chance, I scored.

"It was a strange moment when I scored. This team did a lot for me - and the fans too. We've been here together. But we have to deal with that.

"I feel it's like my garden here. I know the pitch here so well. I had a good relationship with the fans here. The feeling is to leave that situation in a good way.

"There's more to come from me. I went to Africa Cup of Nations in January and came back tired.

"I have to finish the season well. We have one game left, I want to win and score. The important thing is to prepare myself well for next season."

Falcao appears to wave goodbye to Manchester United fans against Arsenal

    1399002_heroa.jpg

Radamel Falcao has seemingly said his final farewell to Manchester United, waving to sections of the Old Trafford crowd as he was substituted against Arsenal.

The Colombian cut a frustrated figure as he left the field after another fruitless display but made a point of acknowledging the home fans before heading down the tunnel.

It is unclear whether Old Trafford rose to applaud Falcao's efforts against Arsenal or the imminent arrival of Robin van Persie, who has struggled for form and fitness this season and could also leave this summer.

Falcao arrived at United on a lucrative one-year loan deal from Monaco last summer but has failed to make a significant impact this season, scoring just four goals in 29 appearances in all competitions.

United have an option to sign the 29-year-old for £43.5 million (€60m) this summer but are highly unlikely to exercise it.

Walcott: I need more playing time at Arsenal

    theo-walcott-five-things-we-learned-manchester-united-v-arsenal_1t09f19lx4mhw14o2nelzb2z1o.jpg

Theo Walcott feels he needs more playing time if he is to get back to his best after his equaliser sealed a point for Arsenal against Manchester United.

The England winger's cross deflected off Tyler Blackett to cancel out Ander Herrera's opener in a result which left the Gunnners on the verge of securing a place in the Champions League group stage.

And Walcott, who missed nine months with a ruptured cruciate ligament in 2014, feels he requires more than cameo appearances off the bench if he is to continue having an impact.

"I’ve been very patient coming back from injury," he told Sky Sports "I just need more minutes really. As a substitute you need to be positive. It was a great result today.

"When you come to Old Trafford and you get a positive result, it showed how fit we are as a team. It’s a crucial point and we just need one more point for third because of goal difference.

"Its always tough coming back but I feel part of the squad. The manager's been patient with me. I feel like I'm getting stronger and quicker."
