Sydney FC 0-1 Tottenham: Kane scores again as Spurs secure friendly victory

    1455842_heroa.jpg

Harry Kane netted his third goal of Tottenham's post-season tour as they rounded off their trip with victory over Sydney FC.

Kane scored the only goal of the game as his angled drive two minutes before half-time proved to be the difference between the sides.

Having also beaten a Malaysia XI on their tour, the Premier League outfit head for a summer break on the back of four straight wins and another confident performance.

Mauricio Pochettino again named a strong side, with Kane, Christian Eriksen and Hugo Lloris all included from the start, though Danny Rose missed out through injury.

And they almost made the perfect start as Andros Townsend cut inside from the right-hand side to deliver a dangerous cross, but Erik Lamela could only head over from six yards out.

But the north London outfit did not have things all their own way in the early stages, with Deandre Yedlin having to make a fine covering challenge to deny Shane Smeltz a shooting opportunity.

Eventually Spurs took control, with Lamela attempting a rabona from 20 yards that lobbed just wide of the post before Eriksen blazed over the bar when well placed on the edge of the area.

They were indebted to Jan Vertonghen, however, as the Belgium international stopped them from falling behind with a goalline clearance to deny Alex Brosque after Yedlin gave the ball away on the edge of his own box.

Tottenham upped the tempo towards the end of the first half, and though Kane missed a good chance after Townsend found him in space inside the area, but the England striker made amends moments later.

Pochettino's side broke with pace before Lamela found Kane, and the striker took a touch before arrowing an effort across Ivan Necevski and into the bottom corner.

Follwing a number of changes for both sides at the break and early in the second half, the intensity dropped out of the game, though Bernie Ibini did test Michel Vorm with an effort from 20 yards early in the second period.

Eventually Tottenam were able to raise their game, and Kane came close to adding a second as his low effort was cleared off the line by Sebastian Ryall.

And Kane continued to cause a problems as he fired narrowly wide after a well-worked free-kick routine with Tom Carroll.

The striker was eventually replaced after 84 minutes as the visitors saw the game out with relative ease.

Valverde: I don't know how to stop Messi - but we'll try

    mikel-san-jose-lionel-messi-athletic-bilbao-barcelona-08022015_34205ken3av11dyvn70nef8uy.jpg

Athletic Bilbao boss Ernesto Valderde admits he does not have a plan to stop Lionel Messi in Saturday's Copa del Rey final.

Messi scored in both of Barcelona's cup final triumphs over Bilbao in 2009 and 2012 and has enjoyed an exceptional run of form in 2015 to help the Catalans close in on the treble.

Valverde conceded he has no idea how to stop the four-time Ballon d'Or winner.
"I don't know how to stop Lionel Messi but we have to try," Valverde told a press conference.

"We know how good he is and more than that, I cannot say anything about Messi that nobody already knows. "We see him every day on the pitch. He is a player who shows his quality on the big stage, like finals.

"We have to try to stop him from doing the things he is capable of; he won't do all those things tomorrow on the pitch."

Barca (26 titles) and Athletic (23) are the two most successful Copa del Rey clubs, although the Catalans have won the last two final meetings between the sides by an aggregate score of 7-1.Valverde said Athletic will stick to the style they know best, however, as they aim to win their first Copa since 1983-84.

"Each team has their own style and way of doing the job, so when you arrive at a match like tomorrow's [game] you have to put this style on the pitch," Valverde said.

"We cannot make up anything now. "We already know Barcelona have a lot of respect for us and we have the same for them because they are a really huge team.

"It's true one of our skills is to apply pressure on them because we could take advantage from doing that. "We know we have to run more than they do and we will try to do that."

Mike Ashley abandoned me, says Gutierrez

    jonasgutierrez-cropped_1465lnq0auyto1bxyzow2bc7zv.jpg

Outgoing Newcastle United player Jonas Gutierrez slammed club owner Mike Ashley on Friday after being released by the Premier League outfit.

Gutierrez, who successfully returned to the pitch in March having undergone treatment for testicular cancer earlier in the season, implied Ashley had abandoned him since he had surgery in October 2013.

Newcastle ended a seven-year association with Gutierrez on Friday, releasing the 31-year-old versatile defender and midfielder after 187 league matches for the club.

"Two things I learn from my illness," Gutierrez wrote on Twitter.

"How you can support a player (Newcastle fans) and how you leave a player alone (Newcastle owner)."

The former Argentina international came off the bench against Manchester United to rapturous applause on March 4, having missed the first 26 matches of the 2014-15 season due to his cancer treatment.

Gutierrez's first start of the season came three games later in the derby against Sunderland, and he started the last five matches of the campaign - setting up a goal and scoring another in Newcastle's 2-0 win over West Ham on the final day of the season, a victory that secured the club's Premier League status.

The fan favourite expressed mutual admiration for Newcastle's famously passionate supporters on Facebook: "Thanks to all football fans and Newcastle fans for supporting me and trust in me. This is a way to demonstrate I always hear you.

"You are very important to me, football wouldn't be the same without you. All my effort and affection is for you!"

Berlusconi: I want Ancelotti & Ibrahimovic back with AC Milan

    carlo-ancelotti-zlatan-ibrahimovic_q8nlu2edb6361n1ug8mbqn3zr.jpg

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi says he is determined to convince Carlo Ancelotti and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to return to the club this summer.

The Rossoneri have been vocal in their desire to bring former boss Ancelotti back to San Siro following his sacking by Real Madrid.

And Berlusconi claims he has the backing of the supporters as he attempts to appoint the three-time Champions League winner in Filippo Inzaghi's place."I hope Carletto comes back to us, we are willing to invest in him. I hope there is a good chance he'll be the next coach of Milan," he told Sport Mediaset.

"Galliani and I are not the only ones who want him to come back. All Milan fans I've spoken to want him back."

Ancelotti himself says he intends to take a year out of the game in order to have surgery on a small issue in his back.

Berlusconi, however, hopes the operation will not scupper his plans and admits he is not currently contemplating any other candidate.

"He needs a small operation and he'll make a decision afterwards, which also takes into account his family," he said."I don't want to think of another possibility if it isn't Ancelotti. If he doesn't come then we'll look at other options."

Berlusconi also admitted he is determined to bring Ibrahimovic back to the club from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

"I'm fixated on his return, although it's a very difficult thing to make happen, and it will take patience," he added."But he's magnificent on the pitch."

Hazard: I was like a kid with a toy lifting Premier League title

    eden-hazard_r9i04o8anmjj1kklvntpnoqqa.jpg

Chelsea's Eden Hazard has admitted that getting his hands on the Premier League trophy made him feel like a child with a new toy.The Blues sealed the title with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace earlier this month, finishing eight points clear of second-placed Manchester City.

Hazard was named Player of the Year by Chelsea, the PFA, and the Football Writers' Association after a superb season, but the Premier League title was the award that gave the Belgian the most satisfaction.

"It was a good week," he told Chelsea TV ahead of the Blues' friendly with the Thailand All-Stars in Bangkok on Saturday."We got the trophy at Stamford Bridge, and now we're in Bangkok to see the fans.

"[Picking up the trophy] I was like a kid when you get a new toy. I came here to win this trophy, we did it this season and it's been a great season for all of us.

"When you play the last game at Stamford Bridge and you know you're already champions, it's easy, and we wanted to finish for the fans with a victory.

"It's the end of a fantastic season for me. I got a lot of trophies, it's fantastic, I cannot describe. I just want to say 'thank you' [to my team-mates] because without them I am nothing. I cannot play alone. They give everything on the pitch.’

Hazard is looking forward to playing in front of some of Chelsea's overseas fans in Thailand and Australia, where Jose Mourinho's men will take on Sydney FC on Tuesday.

And the 24-year-old insisted he would not be taking the game in Bangkok lightly in spite of the fierce heat.

"The flight was long, but we know it's for a good reason," he said. "We enjoy it here with the fans and finish the season in a good way.

"When you are outside on the pitch you give everything, it doesn't matter the weather. We still have to give everything like we did the last game. The pitch is not bad, and we have to enjoy."

Hazard and many of his team-mates will take part in international fixtures next month before jetting off for their summer holidays.

The Belgian, though, is already focusing on retaining the Premier League title next term.

Asked if he thought that would be possible, Hazard simply replied "I hope. Why not?"

Thailand All-Stars 0-1 Chelsea: Solanke seals Blues friendly win

    1456012_heroa.jpg

Dominic Solanke's early first-half strike sealed a 1-0 win for Chelsea over Thailand All-Stars on Saturday.

The England Under-19 international finished off a good team move as he volleyed home after Ola Aina's cross was helped on its way by Loic Remy.

The Blues dominated proceedings from there and went close to adding a second on a number of occasions as Solanke, Eden Hazard and Cesar Azpilicueta all went close.

Jose Mourinho kept the likes of John Terry, Diego Costa and Hazard on the bench for the first half, and though the Premier League champions dominated they struggled to create many chances of note.

Solanke gave them the lead early on as he drove a bouncing ball into the bottom corner after Remy had diverted Aina's cross into his path.

Otherwise Mourinho's team struggled to break their hosts down, though Solanke almost made it 2-0 when his chipped finish dropped narrowly wide after Jermie Boga and Remy had broken forward.

Hazard and Costa were among those introduced at the break, and the former almost made an immediate impact as he cut inside from the left and curled an effort narrowly wide.

Azpilicueta should have doubled their advantage when he found space in the area from Charly Musonda's free-kick, but he could only send his header over the crossbar.

At the other end, Andreas Christensen had to be on his toes to clear an effort off the line before Musonda twice fired wide in the closing stages as the visitors secured a first win of their post-season tour.

    Rio Ferdinand retires from football

    rio-ferdinand-qpr_1gkl8wu0rda5u158xyguym1rxs.jpg

Rio Ferdinand has announced his retirement from professional football.

The 36-year-old has called time on his 19-year career after being released by QPR earlier this week.

Ferdinand won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and three League Cup trophies in 12 seasons with Manchester United. He was also capped 81 times by England.

“After 18 years as a professional footballer, I now feel it's the right time for me to retire from the game that I love," Ferdinand said in a statement to BT Sport.

“As a 12-year-old boy, kicking around a football on the Friary Estate in Peckham, I never dreamt that I would play for my boyhood club West Ham, captain Leeds United, win the Champions League with Manchester United, or re-join my first manager Harry Redknapp at Queens Park Rangers.

“I will always regard the 81 times that I played for England, with immense pride. These are all treasured memories that will last a lifetime.

“Starting a career, every young man needs mentors. I found mine in Dave Goodwin, the district manager at Blackheath, and Tony Carr, the youth team manager at West Ham. They installed in me personality traits that lasted throughout my career. I will always be grateful to them.

    226683_heroa.jpg

“I'd like to thank Chris Ramsey, Harry Redknapp, David O'Leary and David Moyes who managed me at various times in my career, all the backroom staff who looked after me over the years, and the players that I played with. I would also like to thank the team who managed me off the pitch, Jamie Moralee and everybody at New Era.

“Winning trophies over my 13 years at Manchester United allowed me to achieve everything that I desired in football. From a young child to today, that was all I cared about.

“None of that would have been possible, without the genius of one man, Sir Alex Ferguson. His greatest accomplishment in my eyes will always be how he developed us as men, not just as footballers. He will in my opinion, always be the greatest manager in British football history.

“I'd also like to thank and pay tribute to my wife Rebecca and my family, including my mother and father, for their sacrifices, their encouragement and their advice throughout my career.

“And finally, I'd like to thank all the fans from all the clubs - for without them professional football would not exist. I will miss each and every one of you on my Saturday afternoons.”

Ferdinand's former club Manchester United honoured the defender with their own personal tribute on Saturday.

Verona 2-2 Juventus: Last gasp Juanito denies Bianconeri

    1457052_heroa.jpg

Juventus were denied victory on the final day of the Serie A season after Juanito's injury-time equaliser saw Verona snatch a late 2-2 draw.

Having already secured their first domestic double for 20 years, the champions began slowly and were twice nearly punished by Verona's veteran striker Luca Toni before the break.

Fernando Llorente cannoned a volley off the bar as Juventus gradually began to build momentum and they took the lead just before the break through Roberto Pereryra, who produced a breath-taking strike from 25 yards.

But the hosts fought back, and the lively Toni was on hand to finish off a sweeping counterattack just after half-time.

The visitors restored their lead just before the hour mark when a lovely move behind the defence allowed Llorente to fire home, before Carlos Tevez was denied late on from the spot.

Things went from bad to worse for Allegri's side, though, when Simone Pepe was sent off, and the resulting free-kick saw Juanito head home a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.

The result is sure to disappoint Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri, whose side will need a substantially improved performance if they are to beat Barcelona in Berlin and earn an historic treble.

Tevez returned to spearhead Allegri’s attack, but it was Capocannoniere rival and ex-Juventus striker Toni who fashioned the first chance after six minutes, latching on to Juanito's deflected pass inside the area before poking wide.

Juanito headed Emil Hallfredsson's fizzed corner over the bar nine minutes later, as the visitors struggled to find their usual fluency.

Claudio Marchisio powered a vicious volley into the ground and wide on 23 minutes, but Verona continued to threaten, with Toni prodding just wide from close-range following Hallfredsson's whipped cross.Llorente nearly marked his own return to the Juventus starting line-up with a goal just after the half hour mark, but his crashing volley came back off the bar.

Yet the visitors were not to be denied and took the lead four minutes before the break when Pereyra cut in from the left and curled home a stunning effort.

But Verona kept going and were rewarded for their efforts early in the second half when a superb counter-attack allowed Hallfredsson to play in Toni, who this time made no mistake in stroking home for his 22nd goal of the season. The Italian was denied a second on 54 minutes after slicing wide, and the visitors soon seized the initiative.

A trademark ball from Andrea Pirlo over the defence found Simone Padoin, whose cushioned header teed it up for Llorente to fire into the net.

Tevez came close to wrapping up the win at the other end by driving wide 10 minutes from time and the Argentine should have made sure of victory with an 88th-minute penalty but saw his weak effort saved by Rafael.

And things got worse for the visitors in stoppage-time as Pepe was red-carded for scything down Mattia Valoti in the centre circle, with the resulting free-kick into the box finding the head of Juanito, who earned his side a well-earned point.

Juventus are in a league of their own - Garcia

    rudigarcia-cropped_gueb0j5w1nye1rv9dt3wm107k.jpg

Rudi Garcia says Juventus are in a "league of their own" but praised his Roma side for "coming top of their league" after securing second place in Serie A.

A disappointing second half of the season saw Roma's title bid fizzle out as Juventus coasted to a fourth straight league title.

Garcia's men also had to hold off a late charge from Lazio to secure a place in next season's Champions League group stage, but the Frenchman says his players couldn't have done any more."The course of a season never runs smooth and we did have to negotiate a few rough moments," Garcia said ahead of Sunday's final match with Palermo.

"We have a fantastic group of players here. We all stuck together and that's what enabled us to finish second

"Roma is one of the most exciting projects in European and world football but we can't get ahead of ourselves. "Our overall assessment is that we came top of 'our' league. Juve are in a league of their own at the moment."

Garcia has now set his sights on a better performance in the Champions League, after being knocked out in the group stages this term by Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

He added: "We were placed in a group of death in the Champions League but it was all good experience for us. "Hopefully we'll be in the third pot in next season's draw. We might have an easier group then."

No World Cup changes, Blatter confirms

    fifaworldcup-cropped_19orwspyhq8bf1a3fenaeev07v.jpg

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has confirmed there will be no changes to the upcoming World Cup tournaments in relation to qualification and allocation of regional places.

Speaking a day after he was re-elected for a fifth term at the helm of football's world governing body, the 79-year-old insisted the sport's global showpiece would not be altered.

Russia will stage the 2018 competition before Qatar hosts four years later, and Blatter explained the allocation of 32 places at the finals will remain the same.

Europe will therefore retain 13 qualifying places, with Africa keeping five. South America and Asia will each have four automatic qualifiers, with their fifth-placed nations entering play-offs with countries from CONCACAF (three automatic qualifiers) and Oceania, who remain without an automatic route to the World Cup. The host nations will complete the respective line-ups.

"This morning we [the FIFA Executive Committee] had an excellent meeting," said Blatter. "Among other things we decided that the slots of the 2018 and 2022 World Cup would not change.

"So, we will stick to 32 teams and the same distribution [of places from across the confederations] accepted by everybody, although some were more grumpy than others.

"Furthermore, in relation to the 2026 World Cup, we decided that all associations in Fifa can ask to host except those who are in the continent of the 2022 hosts – in other words Asia.

"All the other confederations will be able to present bids."Blatter won Friday's presidential election at the Fifa Congress in Zurich after winning 133 votes in the first ballot against Prince Ali bin Al Hussein.

Prince Ali withdrew before the second round of voting, having only received support from 73 member nations.

    Mancini vows to rebuild Inter

    robertomancini-cropped_pctfecs12n8t1swidnhhwvez9.jpg

Roberto Mancini has vowed to continue the rebuilding work at Inter next season and has no intention of leaving the club

The former Manchester City manager returned to San Siro in November after Walter Mazzarri had been sacked, but failed to revive their fortunes despite an encouraging start.

With one game remaining, Inter have a small chance of earning a European place next season if results and decisions - namely whether Genoa are granted a Uefa license - go their way.

However, that has not stopped Mancini from being criticised, though he insists he remains confident of restoring the club to their former glories.

"I will stay at Inter, 100 per cent, it is safe," he said. "The president, like all people who work for the club, wants the best Inter.

"We will have to work, we will have a month of very intense work, we will resume preparation early. "The 50 days of preparation will be fundamental.

"You cannot know what will happen [next season] but what is certain is that we'll have a strong team to fight for the top positions next year.

"We hope that they stay all good players. I believe that all players can do much more than they have already done."Inter face Empoli in the final round of fixtures on Sunday.

Arsenal 4-0 Aston Villa: Walcott & Alexis shine to hand Gunners record 12th FA Cup

    1457342_heroa.jpg

Arsenal retained the FA Cup as they proved to be far too strong for Aston Villa at Wembley.

Theo Walcott opened the scoring with a powerful finish before Alexis Sanchez doubled the lead with a stunning strike from distance early in the second period.

Per Mertesacker made the game safe with a header soon after before substitute Olivier Giroud added a late fourth as the Gunners became the most successful side in the competition's history with 12 wins.

Perhaps wary of repeating last season's disastrous start against Hull City, which saw them go two goals behind, Arsene Wenger's side began on the front foot in a frenetic opening 10 minutes and gradually cranked up the pressure on Shay Given's goal with a series of corners and set-pieces.

The former Newcastle United goalkeeper - starting a second Cup final 17 years after his first, which also ended in defeat to Wenger's side - was required to claw out Laurent Koscielny's lofted header before Aaron Ramsey got across the returning Jores Okore to ripple the side-netting.

Ramsey scooped another effort over soon after, while Villa looked in vain to Christian Benteke as an outlet in a bid to relieve the pressure.

However, Given's goal continued to lead a charmed life as Kieran Richardson blocked Walcott's goalbound effort, only for the striker to open the scoring five minutes before the break.

Sanchez's header dropped kindly in the box and Walcott made no mistake - ending Villa's resistance with a powerful finish at the near post.

Arsenal began the second half as they ended the first - dominating possession and linking neatly up front - with Sanchez doubling the advantage in spectacular fashion.

A dipping effort from 30 yards had a perplexed Given beaten all ends up as the Chilean effectively wrapped up the victory with his 25th goal of an impressive debut season with the club.

Despite the introduction of Gabriel Agbonlahor for Charles N'Zogbia, Villa never looked like repeating Arsenal's heroics of last year.

Instead, Mertesacker shook off Benteke's attentions to flick Santi Cazorla's corner beyond Given shortly after the hour before Giroud compounded a disappointing day for Villa with a clipped finish at the near post from fellow substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross.

There could be no doubt Wenger's men merited writing themselves into English football history as former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood was denied a piece of silverware to end what has nonetheless been an impressive introduction to life at Villa Park.

Walcott: It's Premier League title time for Arsenal

    1457212_heroa.jpg

Theo Walcott says Arsenal now plan to win the Premier League title after retaining their FA Cup trophy with a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at Wembley.

The 26-year-old scored the opening goal as the Gunners eased to a comfortable win with Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud also on the scoresheet.

Victory means Arsenal are now the most successful team in the competition having recorded their 12th FA Cup win and Walcott says the Gunners must now kick on and claim the title.

"We are very close to winning the title. We just need to start well. I've been here for a long time and this is one of the best squads I've been part of," he told BBC Sport.

"We should be achieving much more. That's two FA Cups, Premier League is the next big target."

Arsene Wenger opted to start Walcott ahead of Giroud for the final and the attacker has thanked his manager for keeping faith in him.

"It's amazing. Any win is fantastic. The manner we did it today was great. We played great football, kept a clean sheet," he added.

"We always knew if we kept a clean sheet we'd score goals and win the game. I've got to thank the manager for having the faith in picking me and repaying him but this team is blessed. It's got to be many more next year.

"I missed this. I was at home, on FaceTime. To be part of this today is a dream. My family's here. I've worked so hard like the staff and the players. I want to thank the physios and everyone's that looked after me but this is massive for me."
