Paris Saint-Germain president: FFP is truly impossible

    nasser-al-khelaifi-paris-sg_1v2s359cuyyil12oualm4ldld1.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has put pressure on Uefa to change their Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

The French side found themselves limited in the transfer market last summer due to restrictions placed upon them by European football’s governing body and, as things stand, will again be constrained this summer.

However, Uefa president Michel Platini has hinted that there could be changes to the laws made in June.

Al-Khelaifi has exerted pressure on alterations to be implemented to allow QSI, the owners of PSG, to invest more heavily in the playing staff of the club, whose ambition remains to win the Champions League.

“It’s truly impossible to continue with FFP next year. Really, it’s not fair,” Al-Khelaifi said following his side’s Coupe de France win over Auxerre on Saturday evening.“I don’t want to make a problem or cause a scandal with Uefa. We just want to speak, because it’s not just.

“I think we can make them understand the situation, because they want to create a stronger Champions League.”

He believes PSG are making progress to become European champions, despite a third quarter-final exit in as many years in 2014-15.

“It’s our big dream. We dream every day and every night. We are working towards this great project of the Champions League. “This year was better than last year because we beat Chelsea.

“It really takes the confidence and experience in this competition. We must not forget that we also have young players. It's great for the club because they will stay at least 10 years with us. It is also important for the future of the club.”

PSG became the first French club to win the domestic treble on Saturday evening, with an Edinson Cavani header sufficient to defeat Auxerre 1-0 in the Coupe de France final.

Klopp gave Dortmund our smile back - Watzkeax

    jurgen-klopp-borussia-dortmund-dfb-pokal-30052015_bckaknwoczq21rvwzw3rmd3h8.jpg

Jurgen Klopp gave Borussia Dortmund their smile back in his seven years in charge, according to sporting director Hans-Joachim Watzke.

In his seven years in charge at Signal Iduna Park, Klopp won two Bundesliga titles, a DFB-Pokal and two DFB Supercups as well as finishing second in the Champions League.

However, his side only just scraped a place in the Europa League for next season after a disappointing campaign and lost 3-1 to Wolfsburg in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday - his final game in charge.Despite that, Watzke was full of praise for the 47-year-old as he waved goodbye to the club.

"I've been trying for weeks to put off saying goodbye," Watzke said. "But now the time has come.

"What Klopp has done is exceptional and it has never been so before. He came at a difficult time and has returned the smile to us."Klopp had his own goodbyes for the German side after the final.

"It is not important what they think about you when you come. It is important, what they think about you when you go," he stated."No matter what happens, we will never forget our time here."

Barcelona and Bayern close in on Gundogan

    ilkay-gundogan-borussia-dortmund-18102014_fdwhu4yugpj018g7e3sqi0nw6.jpg

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has confirmed that he is in talks with other clubs over a transfer this summer and has hinted that Barcelona or Bayern Munich could be his destination.

The Germany international, whose contract expires in 2016, had been linked with a move to the Premier League, were Manchester United and Arsenal were among the suitors, but the 24-year-old has hinted he is set to snub those approaches.

While a move to Barcelona would be impossible this summer because of their transfer ban, the midfielder was asked if he is in the process of learning Catalan or Bavarian, to which he replied: "We are holding talks yes, but no decision has been made. I can't say more than that on this."He added that his future does not definitely lie away from Dortmund.

"I'll leave it open as to whether they continue with or without me. “BVB are a great team and a really good coach is coming.

“I don’t know how the team will look next season. The challenge will be to get the great potential of this team back on the pitch. We managed to do that too little during the last year."In some ways we're glad this difficult season is over now."

Dortmund spent the campaign off the pace in the Bundesliga and only qualified for the Europa League on the final day of the season. On Saturday, they lost the DFP-Pokal final 3-1, ending the reign of coach Jurgen Klopp on a disappointing note in the process.

Wenger must get ruthless in pursuit of further Arsenal glory

    1460272_heroa.jpg

Dripping in celebratory champagne after defending the FA Cup, Arsene Wenger will have afforded himself a moment of pride and reflection. But a mere moment is all he can sacrifice before turning his attention to next season. Last year's victory was supposed to be a turning point, a springboard, though still it is a decade since Arsenal last finished higher than third in the league. This time it must be different.

When beating Hull City, and after such an arduous, dramatic final, the north Londoners rightly revelled in their drought-ending win; it was a hard-earned, long-time-in-the-making marker that deserved to be savoured and enjoyed. But this time they should not be so content with beating the fourth worst team in England's top-flight, a team lucky to have avoided relegation.

On the big day, Aston Villa showed none of the adrenaline-pumping gusto that had started to typify their style under Tim Sherwood. Instead they were meek and submissive, hindered by their manager's admission that he "didn't try to stop Arsenal" when formulating a gameplan. That played into the hands of a team who are rarely, if ever, out-played, but frequently frustrated by the defensive, counter-attacking tactics Sherwood curiously snubbed.

In the end it was all too easy for Arsenal, who managed nine shots on target while their opponents did not even muster one off-target attempt. In their three meetings this season they have now racked up an aggregate score of 12-0, while since Sherwood took over Villa have the third worst defensive record in the Premier League. Hardly the mightiest of foes to overcome.

Yet the selfie avalanche has cascaded across social media already, the Arsenal players beating their chests and patting themselves on the backs – most in novelty Arsenal headgear, of course. To retain the FA Cup is a great accomplishment, no doubt, but to do so by beating Wigan, Hull City, Reading and Villa in four successive Wembley appearances is less impressive. Now is not the time for crowing, but looking forward – and this is where Wenger must take a leaf out of Jose Mourinho's book.

Already the parallels between how they treat success are vast; the self-titled 'Special One' said he would reflect on Chelsea's Premier League title win for just five minutes – for him, victory is only ever a stepping stone, a precursor to even bigger and greater moments. He would have watched Saturday's final with some element of intrigue, but only before getting back to plotting and planning for next season.

Another serial winner, Roy Keane, also comes to mind when watching Arsenal's players, phones in hand, parade around Wembley on their lap of honour. Writing in his first autobiography, the former midfielder felt his Manchester United team-mates lost their edge after the treble-winning season, that they were far too happy with themselves and lost their focus. For United it was 'job done', and Arsenal cannot afford to fall into the same trap.

Wenger's party mood has already lasted longer than the five minutes Mourinho afforded himself, with the Arsenal manager's celebrations continuing long after he stepped away from the tickertape-strewn Wembley pitch, still singed from the tonnes of pyrotechnics let off before and after Villa's evisceration.

Instead he joined his players on a night out. In his post-match press conference, he side-stepped a question on transfers, jesting, "I'm not in a buying mood tonight, unless I'm buying a drink for my players." But he ought to start thinking about next season quickly, and about the futures of some of the players he plied with alcohol and danced the night away with.

One of Wenger's most commendable, but frustrating, traits is his attachment to his squad. Where others will doubt and criticise, the Frenchman will show faith. Usually he is right, and a record-setting 12th FA Cup will feel like justification. But now more than ever is the time to get ruthless if he wants to take Arsenal from a side that can eviscerate Villa and other no-marks into a team that can genuinely challenge for the title. He will not do that with this squad as it currently is.
While the talk of platforms and pushing on from Wenger sends the right message – one that is a long way from the damaging sense of accomplishment that Keane felt United's players suffered from in 1999, and which saw them go nine years before reaching another European final – it is actions, not words, that speak loudest. If Arsenal are to really push on, they need signings, even if that means upsetting some of the players that were worshipped as heroes on Saturday.

It is the most broken of records, but reinforcements are still required in the spine of the team and a comprehensive win over Villa – the kind of meagre side they have chewed up and spat out consistently since their last title win – does not change that. Mourinho would not take such a victory as vindication of his squad's ability. The Portuguese is always looking to upgrade, even if that means dispensing of a player that served him well (see Damien Duff, William Gallas, Tiago, Patrick Vieira, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Rafael van der Vaart; all sold, all upgraded).

Francis Coquelin has impressed since being given a chance in the first team, but his success story only begs the question of how dominant and effective a genuinely world-class destroyer would be in an Arsenal midfield already chock-full of craft. In attack, Olivier Giroud's purple patch faded as expected and a thoroughbred centre-forward comparable to Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa is needed. Despite his win percentage, meanwhile, David Ospina is patently not good enough to be No.1.

Where, too, are the Keane-style firebrands in the squad that reject and abhor mediocrity with their every fibre, who would lambast the dressing room for celebrating finishing fourth, as they did last year? Keane would not have lingered on a win over Villa for very long – or, indeed, donned a silly hat – even less so Hull and Reading, both Championship clubs now, or League One's newest recruit, Wigan.

Arsenal have never struggled to dominate lesser sides – they finished the league season unbeaten against bottom-half clubs with the highest points per game in the division. Their Achilles heel has always been how they fare against the bigger teams, their title rivals. Another FA Cup win is not something to sniff at, but grander challenges, and prizes, await if only Arsenal can manage to treat this triumph as a first step of many towards real greatness and glory.

Cavani will never leave Paris Saint-Germain - Al-Khelaifi

    edinson-cavani-auxerre-paris-sg-coupe-de-france-30052015_lmcyi9d0423817u8pahflhlpp.jpg

Edinson Cavani will not be allowed to leave Paris Saint-Germain in the upcoming transfer window, according to president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

The Uruguay attacker has been frustrated by being pushed out onto the wing to accommodate for star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic since his arrival in the French capital in two years ago.

Cavani has been linked to a move away from PSG for some time, but the club's chief executive says he is going nowhere, hailing him as the world's best forward.
"I've always defended him. He will stay with us and never leave," he told Telefoot.
"He is fine at Paris and, for me, he's the best striker in the world."

The 28-year-old, who joined PSG from Napoli in 2013, scored 31 times in 52 appearances in all competitions to finish ahead of Ibrahimovic as the club's top marksman.

Walcott: I'm sure my Arsenal future will get resolved

    1460352_heroa.jpg

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott believes his future at the club will be resolved soon and says their FA Cup win has to be a stepping stone to greater success.

The Gunners retained the FA Cup with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Tim Sherwood's Aston Villa, with Walcott scoring the opening goal.

However, the 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Chelsea, but he says he feels he'll sign a new contract this summer.

Speaking at the club's trophy parade on Sunday, he told reporters: "I'm sure things will get resolved. I just want to enjoy today.

"I've obviously got England coming up and then I'm sure we can think about that process. It'll take time.

"I have the belief in this team, the manager does. Each player's got to trust in each other now as well. This has got to be a stepping stone even more so now to challenge for the title. That's the ultimate goal. That's what everyone wants. These fans; we need to do it for them. They've been waiting a long time and they enjoy these moments like every player does.

"I haven't really watched the goal. I have recorded it at home. I'm sure me and the old man and my family will be watching it quite a lot."

Walcott's strike followed up his hat-trick against West Brom last weekend as Arsenal cruised to their 12th FA Cup win, and he paid tribute to the club's supporters as he spoke of another year of improvement under Arsene Wenger.

"I can't thank the fans enough," he added. "They made this happen. The players, everyone that's taken part in the FA Cup final has contributed.

"We just showed it's been a great success this year. It's been a step up. To finish third and win the FA Cup in consecutive years. We want more and more of this.

"Even with the weather being terrible, as you would expect [the fans have turned out for the parade]. It just shows the amount of support we have, across the whole country and across the world. It's amazing to see. I can't thank them enough."

PSG should sign Lacazette ahead of Di Maria – Leboeuf

    alexandre-lacazette-nicolas-pallois-lyon-bordeaux-ligue-1-16052015_8oi8pisimn0g1az88p3v0wme8.jpg

World Cup winner Frank Leboeuf believes that Paris Saint-Germain should focus their energy on signing Alexandre Lacazette.

The French champions have been linked with a number of high-profile stars this summer, including Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria, yet the 1998 World Cup winner has advised them to instead pursue the 24-year-old Olympique Lyonnais forward. Lacazette finished as Ligue 1 top scorer with a club record 27 goals and claimed the crown for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose deal in Paris expires in 12 months.

“I would take Lacazette ahead of Di Maria for PSG,” Leboeuf told Telefoot. “They must start to prepare for life after Ibrahimovic.”

Laurent Blanc’s side completed the domestic treble on Saturday evening by defeating Auxerre 1-0 at Stade de France, and despite the unconvincing nature of that win, the former Chelsea star has been impressed by what the Parisian outfit have accomplished over the course of the last year.“PSG have shown their supremacy this season. Certain critics owe them a debt of apology,” he added.

The 44-year-old also cast his eye to former club Marseille, who he has urged to keep hold of head coach Marcelo Bielsa, whose first campaign in France has been wracked with frustration due to a lack of influence over the club’s transfer policy.
“It’s important that Bielsa stays at Marseille. I’d like to see what he could achieve with the squad he wants.”

Real Madrid vice-president confirms Benitez deal

    rafaelbenitez-cropped_1wiffmzrui2ix18po9exzpienj.jpg

Real Madrid vice-president Eduardo Fernandez de Blas has revealed the club's intention to appoint Rafael Benitez as coach, hailing him as one of the world's best.

Benitez is widely anticipated to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabeu, after the Italian was sacked on Monday following a season in which the club missed out on the league and Champions League titles.

Fernandez de Blas is reported as telling a meeting of a Madrid members' group: "Ancelotti is an absolute phenomenon - a gentleman whom I have great affection for, and I think everyone else at Real Madrid does too."Until three days ago he was the best trainer in the world, as two years ago it was Jose Mourinho, and from this week onwards it will be Rafa Benitez.

"I'm excited and looking forward to July 30 to see how the best players in the world work under an exceptional coach."The executive added that, despite his sacking, Ancelotti's reputation has been boosted by his time in the Spanish capital.

"Carlo now has more to his name than when he came, but we're here to make decisions, which we think are best for the club. We live and die by them."Former Valencia, Liverpool, Inter and Chelsea boss Benitez announced his impending exit from Serie A side Napoli on Thursday.

Sunday's clash with Lazio will mark his final game as Napoli coach, with a place in next season's Champions League on the line.

Giroud: Arsenal will enjoy FA Cup win - but we want more next year

    olivier-giroud-arsenal_1swq7kaylymol11r8i0mc1ij4b.jpg

Olivier Giroud says Arsenal are setting their sights on the Premier League after winning the FA Cup for the second consecutive season.

Arsenal dominated against Aston Villa at Wembley and clinched the 12th FA Cup in the club's history with a 4-0 win.

Giroud came off the bench to score the final goal in stoppage time and is hoping to fire his side into the title race next season.

"Now we can just enjoy this trophy, next we want more," he told Sky Sports News during Arsenal's open-top bus parade.

"It's been three years I've been here, I really enjoy playing for this club. It's an honour for me and we really want to start the season strong next year and join the title race. We want more."

He said in an interview with Telefoot: "We're full of ambition in this group. We hope to keep our best players and why not one or two players in reinforcement. This can only help us improve. I was brought on during the cup final and I tried to bring something."

Asked if his goal was a response to recent criticism from Gunners legend Thierry Henry, Giroud responded: "Of course not. I give him a little wink, he must be happy for us."

Yaya Toure staying at Manchester City after Mansour intervention - Seluk

    yayatoure-cropped_zgmd5tap9yp11v63uthvovo96.jpg

Yaya Toure will stay at Manchester City next season following an intervention from the club's owner Sheikh Mansour, according to agent Dimitri Seluk.

The Ivorian appeared set to leave the Etihad Stadium after an inconsistent season in which Seluk claimed his client was being unfairly singled out for City's struggles.

A reunion with former boss Roberto Mancini at Inter looked the likeliest option for Toure and Seluk previously insisted that his client was "90 per cent likely" to leave City, but he has now revealed that Mansour has put a stop to any exit plans.

"Yaya is staying - because Sheikh Mansour told him he must stay," Seluk told The Sunday Mirror.

"Mansour told Yaya that he is still a very important player and that he was the first big player to join City after the takeover.

"He told him that City wouldn't even discuss a sale.

"This is good. People have tried to say that Yaya only wanted more money, but it was never about money. It was only about respect."
