Brazil 2-1 Peru: Douglas Costa wins it late for Selecao

Douglas Costa scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brazil overcame Peru 2-1 in their Copa America opener on Sunday.Costa, a second-half substitute, netted in the 92nd minute after a wonderful Neymar pass.

In a frantic start at the Estadio German Becker in Temuco, Neymar and Christian Cueva both struck in the opening five minutes.

But Brazil left it late to make it 11 straight wins after the World Cup and under Dunga, who is in his second stint in charge.

Brazil and Venezuela are now both on three points in Group C, with Peru and Colombia point-less.Dani Alves, a late call-up to Dunga's squad, was handed a start, while Shakhtar Donetsk's Fred earned his spot in the talented attack.

But it was Peru who took a shock lead in just the third minute. It looked like the Brazil of last year's World Cup as calamitous defending led to the opener.

A harmless long ball led to David Luiz trying to dribble across his own six-yard box and it turned into a pass to goalkeeper Jefferson, who lost possession as he tried a short pass of his own.Cueva was on hand to intercept before taking a touch and firing in from close range.

But Brazil were level just two minutes later thanks to Neymar.Dani Alves, who caused plenty of problems down the right throughout the first half, crossed for the unmarked Barcelona star to head into the bottom corner.

Fred and Neymar fired wide soon after as the incredibly open start threatened to produce more goals.

Neymar almost put Brazil ahead in the 13th minute, only to see his close-range effort cleared off the line by Carlos Zambrano.Diego Tardelli headed a tough chance over seven minutes later before the contest finally settled.

Neymar, who starred throughout, went close to making the breakthrough in the 53rd minute.Peru failed to clear despite two opportunities, and the forward whipped a 25-yard effort onto the crossbar.

Brazil looked the more likely to score and Costa squandered a great chance in the 75th minute, poking wide after Neymar put him through following a counter-attack.
But the goal would come on the counter, with Neymar's defence-splitting pass finding Costa to squeeze in a shot for the match-winner.

England can rely on Rooney - Hodgson

    wayne-rooney-england_12e6spt1alh301vo5j17racbui.jpg

Wayne Rooney's winning goal against Slovenia proves he is a man England can rely on, according to Roy Hodgson.

The Manchester United star missed two clear chances in Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Ljubljana but picked himself up to score England's decisive third goal after strikes from Milivoje Novakovic and Nejc Pecnik had cancelled out a spectacular double from Jack Wilshere.

Rooney's 48th international goal brings him within one of Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record in an England shirt but Hodgson was just as impressed with his captain's discipline when appearing to be elbowed by Bostjan Cesar in the second half.

"Wayne Rooney's performance says a lot of things about him as a man," Hodgson told reporters after a victory that sent his side nine points clear at the top of Group E.

"Just before he took that chance he took a nasty blow from an elbow, which could have decked many a player and led to him losing his discipline. It didn't and he got up.

"The fact one or two chances had gone begging, when the ball fell to him he still stuck it away with aplomb. We can rely on that man. I'd have liked him to get a hat-trick today so all the talk of the record would be finished, but he has plenty of time.

"I've not studied the elbow incident. We thought at the time it could have been a penalty. But the referee handled the game well.

“They're a strong, physical, aggressive team. Fabian Delph has an elbow to his jaw, and Raheem Sterling took a nasty kick at the end of the game as well."

Van Persie: I'm not worried about my Man United future

    robin-van-persie-manchester-united-0-1-west-brom_1hoa3trfyktbv1bano7deff8m9.jpg

Robin van Persie insists he has no intention of leaving Manchester United this summer and believes he can continue to play at the highest level for at least another four years.

Real Madrid have enquired over the availability of the Dutchman, who scored just 10 goals in 27 Premier League appearances last season and enters the final year of his contract this summer.

United's decision not to sign Radamel Falcao after an ill-fated loan spell amid concerns that injuries had cut short his prime raised similar questions over the future of Van Persie, but the 31-year-old is adamant he still has plenty to offer.

“Am I worried? No, I’m totally relaxed," he told reporters. "I have a contract with this club until 2016.

“Things could change now, but that all depends on Manchester United not me. Believe me, I’m relaxed – I’m not going to be part of a puppet show.

“In August I’m 32. But I still have the ambition to play for another eight years. In a few years’ time I may have to accept that I will no longer play at the very highest level. I don’t think that moment is coming now. I still feel very, very fit.

“Playing in the first-team is very important for me. This is why I will probably step down one level when I am 36 or 37. But not now.

“Whenever I have been fit at United I was playing in the first team all the time. People talk about my injuries, but I’ve only had one this season.

“I’ve seen too many players quit early. Most of them regret this soon after. I’ve seen those players in the national team and at my own clubs. Even big legends have regretted their retirement. Look at Paul Scholes.

“He did quit the game but he kept training and was missing football so much, because he knew he was still capable of playing at that level.”

    Pekerman: Colombia will bounce back

    josepekerman-cropped_1k3ev4a63xlj312r39rzd1fc4m.jpg

Colombia coach Jose Pekerman is confident his side can bounce back from Sunday's defeat to Venezuela and find top gear at the Copa America.

Salomon Rondon's second-half header settled the Group C opener at the Estadio El Teniente as Pekerman's side looked a far cry from the side that reached the World Cup quarter-finals last year.Lacking invention and attacking threat for much of the clash, Colombia have work to do to qualify for the next round, but Pekerman maintains all is not lost.

"We regret the defeat, but congratulate Venezuela for being a great opponent," he told reporters.

"This is a typical opening match in the Copa America, where it always takes a little time to find the rhythm."Unfortunately in this game the result has not helped. We could not link the game and complete the passes that we usually do. We had difficulties."

Looking ahead to Colombia's clash with Brazil in Santiago on Wednesday, Pekerman insisted they will not make any drastic changes."We will not change our system of play, all rivals are important."

Pedro: Casillas is Spain's best goalkeeper

    iker-casillas-spain_1jcs8rf55ilvv179veogno93yr.jpg

Spain attacker Pedro has hailed Iker Casillas as the nation's best goalkeeper.

The Real Madrid shot stopper has come under a lot of criticism over the last year for his performances for club and country with many insisting David de Gea should be made first choice keeper for La Roja.

De Gea is also heavily linked to a move to Madrid, which would likely see Casillas leave the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, or at least become second choice.

However, Pedro insists the 34-year-old is the best the country has."Iker is a great goalkeeper and for us is the best," he said. "There is nothing more to say."

Gerard Pique was the subject of boos from the fans after Spain's 1-0 Euro 2016 qualification win over Belarus, but Pedro insists no players have a problem with the defender.

"The squad is a large group and we all get along very well."He was also full of praise for Vicente del Bosque, who coached his 100th game in charge of Spain on Sunday.

"The coach has done great things with us and I am sure that we will achieve a lot more with him."

Hiddink: I'm considering quitting Netherlands job

    guus-hiddink-netherlands-spain-friendly-03312015_u3qrdjvij6c619pa2xxd1vlkl.jpg

Guus Hiddink has revealed that he is considering stepping down as Netherlands coach.

The 68-year-old returned for a second stint with Oranje last summer, replacing Louis van Gaal, who left after World Cup 2014 to take charge of Manchester United. The original plan was for Hiddink to lead Netherlands to Euro 2016 and then be succeeded at the helm by assistant coach Danny Blind.

However, that move could now be brought forward, with Hiddink considering his position due to the Dutch being third in European Qualifiers Group A and thus in danger of missing out on automatic qualification for France with four games to go.
"I have an idea about another role as senior coach," the ex-Chelsea boss told De Telegraaf. "But before I decide anything about that, I want to discuss it with the people around me.

"How long that will take? Oh, that could be clear in just one hour."Netherlands currently sit five points behind group leaders Iceland and three adrift of second-placed Czech Republic in Euro 2016 qualification.

However, the Dutch did claim a crucial win in Latvia on Friday to maintain their two-point advantage over fourth-placed Turkey to at least remain on course for a play-off place.

    Ibrahimovic: I could leave PSG

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-paris-saint-germain_18u6zb118zh311a0phvjft1ayz.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has hinted he could be open to joining AC Milan, revealing that Champions League football is not required should he choose to leave Paris Saint-Germain.The Rossoneri are hoping to re-sign the Sweden international, who fired them to their last Serie A title in 2011, before leaving for France the following year.

Ibrahimovic appeared to end the Italians' hopes of bringing him back to San Siro when he stated at a press conference on Friday that he remains fully committed to PSG.

However, when asked again about the prospect of a return to San Siro on Sunday, Ibrahimovic was less definitive.

"I still have one year left on my contract," the striker told Channel 5. "I belong to PSG. I do not have another plan, but things can change from one day to another.
"I cannot say much now, but I belong to PSG and we will continue like that. But the older I get, the more I have to think differently about choosing a club.

"This concerns not only the footballing aspect, but also the quality of life for my family.

"Many people think that the number one criterion is the Champions League. But this is not true. I want to be in a club that I like, where I have a good time, and have fun playing football.

"If I do not win the Champions League, believe me, my career has been magical anyway. Check my track record; it speaks for itself."Ibrahimovic has been a part of 12 title-winning sides during a career that has taken in spells with Ajax, Juventus, Inter, Barcelona, Milan and PSG.

The 33-year-old has also inspired his current club to three successive Ligue 1 triumphs, though the Champions League has always eluded him.

    Neymar: Messi deserves Ballon d'Or

Neymar believes that Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi deserves to win this year's Ballon d'Or.

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the last two awards and is coming off the back of a season in which he netted a personal-best 61 goals.

However, Messi netted 58 times in 57 appearances in all competitions as he inspired Barca to a historic treble, with the Catalans claiming La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.

Consequently, Neymar believes that there is only one possible winner of the Ballon d'Or for 2015.

"For all that he has done, Messi deserves it," the Brazil international told Globo.
Neymar was spreaking after helping his country to a 2-1 win over Peru in their Cope America 2015 opener.

Christian Cueva shocked Dunga’s men by breaking the deadlock just three minutes into the game in Temuco, but the Selecao responded via a header from their captain two minutes later.

Neymar would then play a decisive role in the winner, laying on the defence-splitting assist for Douglas Costa in second-half injury time, and the Barcelona man maintained that clinching three points was all that mattered.“This debut was difficult because of the game, the continental rivalry, and everything,” the forward stated. “But we got the win, which was our goal.”

The 23-year-old forward is the fifth-highest scorer in Brazil history with 44 goals for his country following Sunday's strike, yet also missed a fine chance during the game.

"I want to continue reaching records with goals, passes, whatever it may be. It worked, and I almost scored my second goal. I messed up the kick but the next will come."

Douglas, who appeared as a second-half substitute to score his first international goal, praised the work of Neymar in the build-up to the goal, which he thought arrived with impeccable timing.

“I managed to master the ball with an accurate pass from Neymar and complete the goal,” he told reporters. “The important thing is that the goal came when the team needed, with the game tied.”

The Selecao return to action on Wednesday, when they face Colombia in Santiago for a rematch of their 2014 World Cup quarter-final.

Allegri: I like Oscar and Mandzukic

    oscar-chelsea_1lse7znxv43dw1q6ym639phl9a.jpg

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri has expressed his admiration for Chelsea star Oscar and Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic .

The Bianconeri look set to spend big this summer on the back of their run to the final of last season's Champions League and have already completed a €32 million deal with Palermo for Paulo Dybala that could rise to €40m including add-ons and bonuses.

Allegri has admitted, though, that he is particularly keen on a new No.10 as well as an old-school centre-forward.

When asked by the La Gazzetta dello Sport if he likes Oscar, the Bianconeri boss replied: "Very much. He is one of those players who can make a difference in Europe."I like Oscar, but I also like Isco, Javier Pastore, Angel Di Maria, Toni Kroos - all the best players from the Champions League.

"And Mandzukic? There are not many centre-forwards in potential transfer circulation. Mandzukic, Gonzalo Higuain, a few others.

"Mandzukic is a good man for relaunching attacks."However, Allegri insisted his interest in Mandzukic does not mean that the club would consider cashing in on Alvaro Morata, who had a fine first season in Italy following last summer's switch from Real Madrid.

Indeed, the former Milan coach says he holds the Spain international in the highest esteem and that the Old Lady must try to build a team around the 22-year-old striker and fellow forward Kingsley Coman."If we were to sell Alvaro, we'd pocket €70-€80 million," he added. "That's the current value of Morata.

"I believe that Juve must count on him and also Coman, another youngster of an exceptional level who only needs a little time to explode."

Allegri: Pogba for sale at the right price

    paul-pogba_15bb6vbqo95y01gfjx5er7q3vo.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri has conceded that Juventus could sell in-demand midfielder Paul Pogba this summer for the right price.

The France international has been heavily linked with a move away from Turin, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain all tracking a player who could fetch a fee as high as €100 million.

Allegri is desperate to hold on to the 22-year-old but admitted that the decision is out of his hands.

"Obviously, with Paul, we're talking about a corporate choice - not a technical one: certain figures are hard to say no to," the Bianconeri boss told the Gazzetta dello Sport."But if Paul remains in Turin, he has to do with the right attitude and have no regrets.

"Because what we have achieved this season is only a starting point and, to build for the future, Juve need motivated young players and veterans who will convey the right spirit to their team-mates."Carlos Tevez's future is also up in the air, with the Argentine considering a return to Boca Juniors while reports have also suggested Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain want him.

Again, Allegri wants Juve's top scorer for the past two seasons to at least see out the final 12 months of his contract with the club but knows that the desire of the player will be key."Carlos' future also depends on him," the ex-AC Milan boss added. "It is his choice.

"But then again, those who remain have to know that the work for next season will be even more intense. I do not want people stopping to rest on their laurels."

Firmino will move to Premier League, reveals agent

    1159142_heroa.jpg

Brazil and Hoffenheim attacker Roberto Firmino is heading to the Premier League, according to his agent.

The 23-year-old has reportedly caught the eye of Manchester United after impressing in the Bundesliga, scoring 49 goals in 153 games and recently hit the winner for Brazil against Honduras ahead of the Copa America.

Firmino signed a new three-year deal with Hoffenheim in 2014, but Louis van Gaal is rumoured to be close to agreeing a deal in excess of €18 million for one of Selecao's rising stars.

"All I can say is that he will go to England," his agent, Roger Wittmann, told Bild.

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for Firmino with Raheem Sterling expected to leave Anfield this summer after telling the club of his desire to find pastures new.

Firmino most recently came on as a second-half substitute, for Fred, as Brazil extended their winning run to 11 games in a 2-1 victory over Peru in Copa America on Sunday.

Wilshere goals among England's best ever - Lineker

    1525452_heroa.jpg

Gary Lineker feels Jack Wilshere's two goals against Slovenia rank among the top-10 ever scored for England.

The Arsenal midfielder scored twice - his first ever goals for his country - as the Three Lions came from behind to maintain their 100 per cent start to Euro 2016 qualification with a 3-2 win over Slovenia.

Wilshere curled in England's equaliser before finishing off a fine team move, which involved Andros Townsend and substitute Adam Lallana, with another thunderous left-footed strike from the edge of the area.

"Jack Wilshere scored two breathtaking goals. I'm sure he hit the same square of the net on both occasions. Let's put it this way - if we had a top 10 he'd be in it," Lineker told BBC Radio 5 live.

Wilshere, normally a deep-lying midfielder for Arsenal, was deployed in an advanced role by Roy Hodgson in Ljubljana, and Lineker commended the 23-year-old's adaptability in light of few more natural options.

He added: "I like him going forward because he goes past players easily. The problem for Roy Hodgson is we don't seem to produce natural holding midfielders."

Benatia: I want to stay at Bayern Munich

    mehdi-benatia-bayern-munchen_1s2ehmhfi1q6v1m931sefy74gf.jpg

Medhi Benatia has rubbished reports that he could leave Bayern Munich this summer, insisting that he wants to win the Champions League with the German outfit.

The Morocco international signed a five-year contract upon joining the Bavarians from Roma last summer for a fee of €26 million and played a key role in the club's Bundesliga title success.

However, Benatia and his defensive colleagues were heavily criticised for their vulnerability in Europe, and their Champions League semi-final loss to Barcelona in particular.

Inter are now keen on bringing the 28-year-old back to Italy, with vice-president Javier Zanetti recently confirming their interest in the player, but Benatia insists that he wants to remain at the Allianz Arena."Every summer we speak about my possible transfers, but the reality is that I have a contract with Bayern and I want to respect it," the centre-half told Mountakhab Tv.

"We lost in the semi-finals of the Champions League to Barcelona and now we want to redeem ourselves next season because the objective of this club is to win the Champions League.

"So, I'm ruling out any possible departure from Bayern."
