Dunga: Virus affected 15 Brazil players before quarter-final

    dunga-brazil-training_xzqn55yjuxae1bvvhovwzfgig.jpg

Dunga has revealed a virus was taking its toll on the Brazil squad ahead of their Copa América quarter-final with Paraguay.

The Seleção took the lead in the final-four clash at the Estadio Ester Roa on Saturday but were pegged back by a Derlis González penalty before falling to defeat in a penalty shoot-out.Following their exit, the coach revealed that a sickness had been affecting the Brazil camp.

He admitted that it forced them to scale back the workload in their practice sessions, though insisted it was not the reason for their elimination.

"It's not an excuse, but 15 of our players suffered from a virus this week. We had to limit some training sessions," Dunga said in his post-match press conference.
"Players suffered from a lot of headaches, back pain and illness - some felt it more than others. We had to reduce the intensity of training to try and help them recover. Some of them were vomiting."Willian wasn't feeling well at half-time, and Robinho was suffering in the end."

Still, the 51-year-old thought the Seleção did a good job of thwarting Paraguay's aerial play but suggested they lacked the attacking speed to make a decisive impact.

"We had to balance the match on the physical aspect, and tried to win until the very end," Dunga added."We tried to neutralise their main game-plan - the aerial ball. We had good moments through the match, with speed and switching between the sides.

"Today we had an important match that needed speed and we lacked that in the end."The former Internacional boss lost a number of players to injury before the start of the tournament in Chile and then had captain and talisman Neymar ruled out through suspension after he was shown a red card in their second group-stage meeting against Colombia.

But he did not believe the loss of the former Santos star was the reason for their exit and instead looked forward to their next task of qualifying for World Cup 2018.

"Historically the Copa América is very complicated. Brazil won a few times, but when you win nothing is said. And when you lose we always say that something is missing," Dunga concluded.

"We lost five players for this year's tournament, and that makes it harder. There is a renovation for us to do, but we can't put aside the experience gathered on a tournament like this."Neymar is important, like he is important for Barcelona, but we have quality players.

"We wished we could win, it was a great lesson but the World Cup qualifiers are still our greatest goal."

What does the summer hold for... Edinson Cavani?

    1303412_heroa.jpg

From claiming that Jamaica was in Africa, to having Gonzalo Jara’s digit shoved into his backside, it has been a confusing and complicated summer for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

But despite his travails at the Copa America, which he threatened to leave prematurely after his father was arrested on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol, his personal future looks more secure than ever at PSG.

Since departing Napoli for France in a €64.5 million deal during the summer of 2013, Cavani has never truly captured the form that made him one of the game’s most sought after forwards.

His inconsistent performances at Parc des Princes, coupled with his inability to dislodge Zlatan Ibrahimovic from the No.9 role in coach Laurent Blanc’s plans, have long led to speculation over his long-term future.

The Copa America was supposed to provide some respite for the Uruguay star, yet without the foil of Luis Suarez to work alongside him, he had a competition that would have been low key had it not been for unwelcome and seemingly persistent controversy.

Nothing seemed to go right for the 28-year-old, whose petulant red card in the quarter-final against Chile set the stage for his country’s exit by a 1-0 margin. It was an act symptomatic of a man riddled with frustration, for his performances on the field had almost become a backdrop to the stories off it – and in any case, they had failed to yield a single goal.

Despite these troubles, Cavani remains very much to the fore of PSG’s plans. Indeed, he continues to be the man seen as the long-term successor to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the forefront of the French champions’ attack.

Dogged by personal issues during his first season at the club - he was frequently forced to fly to South America to finalise his divorce - and guilty of missing some critical chances, his scoring record remains commendable, if not spectacular.

Indeed, in Ligue 1 last term he boasted a significantly better goals-per-minute ratio than Ibrahimovic when penalties are taken from the equation. Cavani found the net once every 175.2 minutes, whereas the Swede managed only a goal from open play every 250 minutes.

It is a statistic from which a defence can be based for the Uruguayan, and the club certainly have not lost faith in him.

"I've always defended him. He will stay with us and never leave," president Nasser Al Khelaifi told Telefoot mere hours after Cavani had struck the winner in the Coupe de France final to secure a first domestic treble.

"He is fine at Paris and, for me, he's the best striker in the world."

Such claims are bold and easily discredited, though the South American has had the happy habit of scoring on the big occasions domestically, with five goals in four cup final appearances at Stade de France.

But while claims of the player's demise may be exaggerated, few would argue that he has provided value for his French record transfer fee. Nevertheless, in PSG's eyes, his pricetag remains unchanged.

“A €50m offer from Manchester United? I would not even look at such a bid,” Al Khelaifi scoffed in April in an interview with Le Parisien.

None of Europe’s current giants are willing to splash out to match the sum that PSG paid for the striker, while others, such as Valencia and Atletico Madrid, are unwilling to invest such a sum in one player.

Juventus initially seemed the likeliest port of call, but the Italians have since opted for Mario Mandzukic as a replacement for the Boca bound Carlos Tevez. Atleti, meanwhile, are closing in on Jackson Martinez.

Why, if he has been a relative disappointment, are PSG so keen to maintain his services then?

For former sporting director Alain Roche, the answer is a simple one. “No other elite European attacker would want to play with Ibrahimovic,” the ex-France defender told RMC.

Even at 33-years-old, the Swede remains intrinsic to the PSG team and, perhaps more crucially to their owners, the club’s brand.

Although Ibra has dropped hints suggesting he could return to AC Milan, if he were to depart, Olivier Letang, the current transfer boss at Parc des Princes, would be too preoccupied with replacing his star player to give himself another problem by allowing another regular starter to depart.

Relations between the two attackers are not as tense as some care to portray, either.

“To play and train alongside Ibrahimovic is very special because, for me, he is one of the best footballers in the world,” Cavani told Goal earlier this month.

“Sharing a dressing room and a pitch with him is special. You learn a lot. It’s a different experience.”

In 12 months, Ibrahimovic’s contract is up, and at that point it is expected that he will move over and allow Cavani to take centre stage. By that time, the Uruguayan will have earned his chance to finally be PSG’s focal point, not only due to his patience, but his unquestionable industry.

Until then, however, he will be content sit in the shade.

Juventus risk losing Morata to Madrid - lawyer

    alvaro-morata-juventus-barcelona-champions-league-final-06062015_16imblfnq7muw1bexcx4fi0sks.jpg

Juventus risk losing Alvaro Morata to Real Madrid if they do not renegotiate the terms of his contract, according to the lawyer who helped take the forward to Turin. The Spain international joined the Italian champions from Los Blancos for €20 million last summer, penning a five-year contract with the Old Lady.

However, Madrid retained the right to buy Morata back, for €30m in 2016 or €35m in 2017.

With Morata having enjoyed a stellar debut season in Italy, helping Juve record a domestic double, as well as firing them to the final of the Champions League, it is being reported that Madrid are considering bringing the 22-year-old back to the Santiago Bernabeu. As a result, lawyer Giuseppe Bozzo, who worked on Morata's transfer to Juve, feels that the Bianconeri must act quickly if they are to hold onto the forward.

"It was my job to bring him to Turin, while his father worked out the details of the contract," he told Tuttosport.“Having become Alvaro’s friend, I can say his desire could well be to stay at Juventus long-term, as he is convinced that they can win the Champions League.

“It’s a complex situation. In my view the next step should be renegotiating the clause with Real Madrid. It is written and can be exercised.

“What the player wants will also have an influence, along with what Madrid want to do with him, but if Juventus want to focus on Alvaro for the next eight to 10 years they must get out of this clause cul de sac."It’s also important to note that obviously his transfer value has already gone far above the €35m in the clause."

Morata netted five times in 11 Champions League appearances last season, with two of his goals coming against former club Madrid in the semi-finals.

'Higuain staying at Napoli' - Giuntoli warns off Juventus and AC Milan

    gonzalo-higuain-napoli-lazio-serie-a_1a41oa7b81t381nekezauci93h.jpg

Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has warned the major footballing powers in the north of Italy that they will not be selling star striker Gonzalo Higuain this summer.

The Argentina international has been a big hit at the Stadio San Paolo since arriving from Real Madrid for €40 million in 2013 and the forward still has three years to run on his current contract with the Partenopei.

However, Juventus and AC Milan have both been heavily linked with a move for Higuain, who was reportedly unhappy with Napoli's failure to qualify for next season's Champions League.Giuntoli, though, says that Napoli have no desire to cash in on their most prized asset, revealing that his sole focus is on strengthening the squad elsewhere.

"Some Italian clubs from the north have taken an interest, but he will stay with us," he told Sportitalia."Now the job is to reinforce both the midfield and defence. We want to touch the attack as little as possible."

Giuntoli also revealed that Napoli's talks with Torino over the possible signing of Italy international Matteo Darmian are progressing well and could eventually lead to a player-plus-cash deal for the full-back.

"We're speaking with Torino," he added. "Our players Jorginho and Omar El Kaddouri could be of interest to them. We'll see."

Arda: We're speaking with three or four clubs

    arda-turan-levante-atletico-de-madrid-liga-bbva-05102015_4texm2wdaeql1ai8dlo9agpf6.jpg

Atletico Madrid ace Arda Turan has revealed that his agent has opened talks with three or four clubs amid reports that he could be bound for Barcelona.

The Turkey international still has two years to run on his contract with the Rojiblancos but his agent, Ahmet Bulut, has already publicly expressed his client's desire to leave the Vicente Calderon this summer, with England the midfielder's preferred destination.Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan are also interested in Arda, while Barcelona became the latest club to be linked with the 28-year-old earlier this week.

The player has now taken to Twitter to effectively confirm his departure, yet refused to clarify exactly what sides want to sign him."The transfer rumors are not entirely correct," he wrote. "My agent is currently in touch with 3-4 clubs. I will update you all if a deal is made."

Arda joined Atletico from Galatasaray in 2011 and has enjoyed a successful spell at the Calderon, helping the capital club win La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Europa League and Uefa Super Cup.

:yes:Depay will bring something we've missed since Ronaldo - Giggs

    1268262_heroa.jpg

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs thinks Memphis Depay will bring the Cristiano Ronaldo-factor back to Old Trafford.

United signed Depay for around €30 million back in May, with Louis van Gaal admitting that rival interest from major European clubs had forced him to move early in the transfer market.

The 21-year-old won the Eredivisie golden boot and young player of the year award after scoring 22 goals - including seven from set pieces - in 30 matches as PSV won the title last season, and Giggs believes his skill and application make him a "United type".

"He is the type Old Trafford will warm to," Giggs told The Sunday Times. "He's an exciting player, but there's also substance behind it. He was top scorer in the Dutch league and got plenty of assists as well.

"He's a ‘United' type. Our fans demand exciting players, players who can get them off their seats and score spectacular goals.

"One thing we probably have lacked since Cristiano - and David Beckham before him – is free kicks. And it looks like Depay has a great track record from free kicks as well.

"Over a season, if you can score more from free kicks and corners it adds up and makes a real difference in winning games. So, no pressure… But hopefully he'll score 10 free kicks every year.

"Old Trafford is the right stage for a player like him," said Giggs. "Because if you try things that don't come off the fans will stay behind you. You're at a club where they want you to do things off the cuff, to entertain them."

Isco and Oscar would be perfect Juventus 'wildcards' - Allegri

    isco-alarcon-real-madrid-deportivo-de-la-coruna-liga-bbva-02142015_t2bj7zdp37vn127zgjvas8drw.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed Juventus are in the market for a new attacking midfielder and highlighted Real Madrid playmaker Isco and Chelsea star Oscar as ideal potential signings. The Scudetto and Coppa Italia winners went painfully close to winning the treble in 2014-15, losing to Spanish champions Barcelona in the Champions League final.

Now Allegri has openly revealed his admiration of creative talents Isco and Oscar, in addition to Sassuolo's Domenico Berardi and Fiorentina's Federico Bernardeschi.

With Carlos Tevez leaving for Boca Juniors and Andrea Pirlo expected to join New York City, the head coach is keen to freshen up his tactical approach and playing squad next season to replace the departing established stars.

"I would like a footballing inventor - they are never boring," Allegri told La Repubblica. "A wildcard in the line-up can bring a different balance to the table.

"Ego in moderate amounts is not harmful to a team's health. I like Real Madrid's Isco and Brazil's Oscar, while among the young Italians there is much to admire in Berardi and Bernardeschi."The addition of a No.10 to the mix is both a tactical desire and a desire to add ego to my team.

"Without Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo this coming season, Juve must change and experiment with new ways of working."

Despite being a firm fan favourite, Isco has been linked with a Real Madrid exit after spending two seasons without cementing a place in the starting XI when every player is fully fit, although Rafael Benitez's arrival as head coach could change his status.

Oscar featured 41 times for Chelsea last season but has been heavily linked with Juventus, though his agent recently denied the Brazil international will be leaving Jose Mourinho's side.

The Turin club relinquished their co-ownership of Berardi to Sassuolo for €10 million in June but are widely expected to buy him back for €18m in 2016, while Bernardeschi has been persistently rumoured to be heading for Fiorentina's exit door.

Juventus want to sell Pogba, claims Laporta

    paul-pogba-serie-a-juventus_1kkz7yjw762t1odznju8sta7t.jpg

Juventus have indicated that they want to sell Paul Pogba this summer, according to Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta.

The France international, 22, has been one of the biggest talking points of the transfer market with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain all heavily linked with signing him.

Barca are also among the clubs leading the chase but Laporta is concerned with reports that members of the interim board will be travelling to Turin on Wednesday to negotiate with Juve prior to the July 18 election.

The ex-president - who is bidding to oust Josep Maria Bartomeu as the Catalans' chief - said earlier this week he was confident of signing Pogba if elected due to his close links with agent Mino Raiola, but believes the club should be waiting until after the vote before making any formal approach.

"I have a bad feeling about what the interim management board are up to," Laporta said at a charity event in Barcelona in reference to the recent Pogba reports. "It is an improper way for an outgoing board to act.

"I hope they do not continue along this path. They have already sold Gerard Deulofeu [to Everton for €6 million] and now they want to sign players who are worth large amounts."It is abnormal that a management board not elected by the members do these things. It may upset members.

"All I have said is that I have very good relationship with Pogba's agent Mino Raiola. I don't think that Juventus will do anything until there is a new Barca president.

"Juventus have given an indication they want to sell, but I don't think it will be until after June 19."

Evans: Liverpool spending hints at Sterling exit

    raheem-sterling-cropped_1pomn2pbxka2d1xxv6atx9jdn2.jpg

Liverpool's summer spending spree is a clear sign that Raheem Sterling is set to leave the club, according to former Reds boss Roy Evans.

The Merseysiders have already completed the signings of Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez ahead of the opening of the transfer window on Wednesday, while Goal understands Southampton have accepted a €17.5 million bid from the Reds for Nathaniel Clyne.

Firmino is believed by many to be the long-term replacement for Sterling, who is refusing to sign a new contract at Liverpool and has already been the subject of three official bids from Manchester City - the latest a bid rising to €63m.

Liverpool publicly insist Sterling is not for sale but Evans does not believe his old club would have pursued such a proactive recruitment drive if they expected to keep the wantaway 20-year-old beyond the summer.

"If you look at the transfer market and the way it has been with the amount of players Liverpool have bought, I think that Raheem Sterling's sale must be in the equation," he told talkSPORT.

"I don't think they would be spending the amount of money they have if they didn't feel Raheem Sterling was already a done deal to somewhere."

Liverpool have been by far the busiest Premier League team in the transfer market since the 2014-15 season ended and Evans added: "I like the idea that they're trying to do business early rather than wait until the end of the transfer window.

"There's been a lot going on of course – they've signed I think four or five already. I just hope they don't go to the situation last year where they ended up signing sort of eight or nine players and they become difficult to integrate.

"I hope they've been selective and done their homework on the players they've bought."

Giggs: Fearless Van Gaal just like Ferguson

    1318652_heroa.jpg

Ryan Giggs believes "fearless" Louis van Gaal replicated Sir Alex Ferguson’s leadership in his first season at Manchester United.

Following David Moyes’ turbulent 10 months at Old Trafford - which resulted in United ending seventh in the Premier League - Van Gaal was able to guide the club to a fourth-placed finish in his debut campaign.

And Giggs, Van Gaal’s assistant at Old Trafford, claims the 63-year-old has offered the same qualities as Ferguson and feels United benefit from the Dutchman’s leadership in key matches.

"It was nothing new in terms of the detail, the hunger, the professionalism, the experience. I’d seen the same with Sir Alex," Giggs told the Sunday Times.

"But there were little innovations that you’re seeing for the first time as a coach, where you thought ‘that’s brilliant.’ And just the overall experience. Especially in the big games.

"You saw someone who wasn’t afraid – or who didn’t show it – and showed what he can do tactically, and in his overall leadership. Everyone at the club – the staff, the players – know who the leader is. And that’s Louis."

Van Gaal admits 'anger' over De Gea rumours

Louis van Gaal has admitted he is angry with the speculation about David de Gea's future at Manchester United during a bizarre telephone conversation which has been aired on a Spanish television channel.

A reporter from Cuatro called the Dutchman at his home in Amsterdam to ask about De Gea’s future at Old Trafford, as well as United’s interest in Sergio Ramos.

Van Gaal was typically curt with his responses and maintained that he would not openly discuss United’s transfer business, although he did initially admit to being angered by the rumours surrounding his No.1 goalkeeper.

    The conversation in full…

Reporter: Hello, Louis. How are you?
Van Gaal: Why are you calling?
Reporter: I was calling about De Gea rumours. Are you angry?
Van Gaal: Yes, yes, but I don’t have any comment. You know that… no problem, it doesn’t interest me either.
Reporter: Are you expecting him to stay at Manchester United or do you think that he will come to Madrid?
Van Gaal: No, I don’t give… I don’t want to respond! I never talk with the media about this topic.
Reporter: Not even about Ramos? Not Sergio Ramos?
Van Gaal: I don’t talk about these things because I talk with my directors, not with the media. So, no problem, but… Goodbye. You know me, you know that I don’t respond.
Reporter: I know, I know, but as it’s such a conflicting topic, conflicting these days…
Van Gaal: Conflicting? You say that! You say that!
Reporter: Man, if your goalkeeper leaves or if Sergio Ramos wants to leave Madrid so they can play together, that’s conflicting no?
    Van Gaal: No. Goodbye.
