Peru 2-0 Paraguay: Carrillo & Guerrero seal third place for Gareca's men

    1609022_heroa.jpg

Peru ended their 2015 Copa America campaign on a high, overcoming Paraguay 2-0 in the third-place match in Concepcion on Friday.

Andre Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero were the heroes for Peru, who also finished third four years ago, with their second-half goals proving the difference at Estadio Municipal Alcaldesa Ester Roa Rebolledo.

After their semi-final exit to hosts Chile and dour opening half, Carrillo volleyed beyond Justo Villar in the 48th minute. And Guerrero netted late on as Peru claimed consecutive third-place finishes at the premier South American tournament.

There were changes to both teams, with Peru pair Christian Ramos and Yordy Reyna starting in place of Jefferson Farfan, who did not pass a late fitness test, and Carlos Zambrano (suspended) after the 2-1 defeat to Chile.

Paraguay counted the cost of their 6-1 drubbing at the hands of Argentina, with Derlis Gonzalez (thigh), Roque Santa Cruz (hamstring), Bruno Valdez (thigh), Nelson Valdez (thigh), Edgar Benitez, Richard Ortiz and Ivan Piris dropping out for Lucas Barrios, Raul Bobadilla, Oscar Romero, Osvaldo Martinez, Nestor Ortigoza, Miguel Samudio and Marcos Caceres.

Chances were at a premium in the first half, with both teams failing to create anything clear-cut during the opening 45 minutes.Reyna and Romero were limited to long-range efforts for Peru and Paraguay respectively as the half ended all-square.

The match came to life in the 48th minute, when Carrillo volleyed past Paraguay goalkeeper Villar from outside the area.A corner kick deflected up in the air and Carrillo got his outstretched boot to the ball, leaving Villar with no chance.

It was the Sporting Lisbon forward's first international goal since August 2012.
Peru had Carlos Ascues to thank after the hour-mark, with his last-ditch challenge enough to deny Edgar Benitez and Paraguay an equaliser.

Benitez was picked out by Romero at the back post with the goal at his mercy in the 66th minute, but Ascues was on hand to deny the Paraguay striker a clear goalscoring opportunity as the ball hit the bottom of the post and rolled away to safety.

Victory was sealed for Peru in the 89th minute as Guerrero side-footed through Villar's legs after a cross from Joel Sanchez.

'Casillas is not finished' - Jesus Fernandez

    1574272_heroa.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas is far from finished as a top-level goalkeeper, according to Levante's Jesus Fernandez.

Casillas has seen his stock plummet over the past 18 months which began during an ignominious episode during Jose Mourinho's time at the club, in which he was dropped as first-choice goalkeeper.

A number of high-profile blunders and Madrid's fervent pursuit of Manchester United star David de Gea this summer has further fuelled the belief that Casillas' illustrious career is firmly on a downward spiral.

However, Jesus - who came through the Madrid Castilla side and spent years training alongside the Spain skipper - is adamant that Casillas still has plenty to offer.

"No, he's not finished!" he told Goal. "There are situations in everyone's career. Casillas is a great keeper and has given a lot to Real Madrid.

"It is very difficult to lead a line as well as he has for so long, and he's at a club where you are exposed to criticism as everything is magnified.

"There may be people who were a little unfair with him, but eventually you have to decide between the player and the club."

Jesus believes Madrid would seem a very different place should Sergio Ramos - wanted by Manchester United - leave this summer, though he accepts that no player is indispensible.

"It's hard to imagine [Ramos not being there]," said the 27-year-old. "He's a symbol of Real Madrid, and has given the club a lot. He has lots of character and is an important part of the club.

"But, in the end, football is like that, and nobody is essential. It has also happened to other players, and the final decision has to be taken by the player himself and the club."

Jesus, who struggled to force his way into Madrid's plans prior to his switch to Levante, denies he felt the pressure of having to try to replace Keylor Navas following the Costa Rican's move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I personally did not feel that pressure. I tried to do my job as best as possible without thinking about who had been here before. The situation then changed, but I did not think it was just for that.

"He [Navas] had a last great season at Levante. From one year to another, many things change. Keylor is a great goalkeeper and had a very good legacy at Levante."

Despite uncertainty over his first-team opportunities at the Ciutat de Valencia, Jesus insists he is looking forward to the prospect of a second season with the club.

"My future is Levante," he added. "I have a year of my contract left and I'm very excited.

"If, then, there is any offer or any opportunity that benefits both the club and me, we'll see, as any player would. But I'm focused on Levante."

'Ibrahimovic would add little to this Milan,' says Boban

    abdoulaye-ba-zlatan-ibrahimovic_ksielblsf0xt1thst0swbqvad.jpg

Former AC Milan ace Zvonimir Boban has advised the club against re-signing Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, claiming they are already well stocked up front following the arrivals of Carlos Bacca and Luiz Adriano.

The Serie A side have long been tipped to make a move for their Ibrahimovic - who represented the Rossoneri between 2010 to 2012 before moving on to Ligue 1 - as they look to reinforce new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic's squad.
However, Boban, who currently works as a pundit for Sky Sport Italia, believes that bringing the Swede back to San Siro will only hold back summer signings Bacca and Adriano.

"At this point, Ibrahimovic has nothing to add," the Croatian told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Bacca already plays as centre-forward. I believe a move would neither be positive for Ibrahimovic nor Milan.

"He costs a lot and risks obstructing Bacca's integration. He [Bacca] is a great buy who is a complete striker and has good experience. Luiz Adriano is a centre-forward too but has good movement and knows where the goal is.
"With him and Bacca, Milan can play in a 4-4-2."

Despite praising the recent buys, however, Boban maintained it was still too early to predict how the fallen Rossoneri would perform next season, arguing that more must be done to improve their defence to match the market of neighbours Inter.

"It's too early to say [how they'll perform]," he continued. "Much will depend on how they start the championship. The first matches will be very indicative, but right now I think Inter have built a better squad.

"[Andrea] Bertolacci is a good buy for midfield, but we need to see if he's of the level to add an extra dimension to the team. For instance, when Juventus signed Andrea Pirlo, he controlled the game.

"[Mattia] De Sciglio must play on the right [of defence]. The left has suffered a heavy decline, and on top of a new left-back, Milan need to invest in two top quality centre-backs."

Milan finished 10th last season, with their poor Serie A showing resulting in the dismissal of Filippo Inzaghi as coach.

Firmino will give Liverpool a lot of joy, says Babel

    1568642_heroa.jpg

Ryan Babel is confident Roberto Firmino will bring "joy" to Liverpool.

The Brazil international became the Reds second most expensive signing ever after arriving for £29 million (€41m) last month following a very successful spell with Hoffenheim.

Babel played with the Brazilian during their time together in Germany and the former Liverpool winger expects Firmino become a firm favourite once he settles into life in England.

"He is a tricky player," the Dutchman told the club's official website. "He can dribble, shoot, he has a great shot, he can play a lot of through balls and his assists are very good.

"He is actually also great at heading, which maybe you wouldn't think because he's not that tall, but he's very good at it.

"He's the kind of player that likes the ball at his feet and to do nice things with it, but something he learned in Germany was how to work without the ball and defend.

"I know how important that is in England, what you do without the ball. It was something he had to learn in Germany.

"I'm very happy for him. He's very talented and now it is down to him. He is the kind of player that can give a lot of joy to Liverpool fans because he's a very skilful player."

Firmino is one of six signings made by Brendan Rodgers during the close-season, joining Danny Ings, James Milner, Adam Bogdan, Nathaniel Clyne and youngster Joe Gomez.

Messi-led Argentina a class above Chile, says Menotti

    lionel-messi-argentina-paraguay_w1ymfd1pslcw1vuoeaxfrdxph.jpg

Cesar Luis Menotti is confident that an Argentina side led by Lionel Messi will prove their superiority over Chile in Saturday's Copa America final.

The Albiceleste will face the hosts in Santiago after routing Paraguay 6-1 in the last four thanks to an influential showing from their captain in Concepcion.
World Cup winner Menotti believes that the victory over the Albirroja, with whom Argentina could only draw in the group stage, showed Gerardo Martino's mean have been growing in every outing and will have too much quality for Chile to handle in Santiago.

"Argentina comes in better in footballing terms. They played a great semi-final and, in general, a great championship," Menotti told La Nacion.

"Chile have good players, but as a team Argentina has more class - and they have Messi who is eager to lift a Copa.

"Argentina have been correcting deficiencies game after game and are playing better every day. This is due to the quality of the players and it seems there is another level in the Argentina team."

Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli has stated that he will not change his side's attacking approach for the showpiece event, but Menotti feels that sticking to their guns could prove costly for the hosts.

"For Chile, it will not be easy to go and look for the Argentina team. If you look too far, the backlash can be fatal," he added.

"It will create substantial pressure for Chile, but I do not think they will go that far. It is not easy to press."

Dortmund have opened their arms to me - Tuchel

    thomastuchel-cropped_1lsdzawdzeo9d1hmvc26earcqn.jpg

After taking charge of his first Borussia Dortmund game, coach Thomas Tuchel says the welcome he has received from the squad has made his start at Signal Iduna Park much easier.

Tuchel was confirmed as the replacement for long-serving coach Jurgen Klopp in April, with the former Mainz boss tasked with returning Dortmund to the upper reaches of the Bundesliga after a disappointing 2014-15.While Klopp's final season saw the club finish seventh, Dortmund did win two Bundesliga titles and the DFB-Pokal during his reign.

However, Tuchel says his start has been made all the more seamless thanks to the welcome from his players.

"I have encountered a very polite, very considerate and very open team, which has opened its arms to the new situation and the new coaching staff at the club," he said."We have all received a very warm welcome. That is the best feeling that you can possibly get when you start out with something new."

Dortmund got the Tuchel reign up and running with a 5-0 friendly win over fifth-tier side Rhede on Friday - Ilkay Gundogan celebrating his new contract with a goal while Henrikh Mkhitaryan was also on target."It was a really demanding test for us because we weren't in optimal condition, having trained very hard this week. But it served its purpose," Tuchel added.

"We were well aware that we'd have a lot of ball possession. That's why we put a real emphasis on our positional and passing play."

Lucas Silva: I fit Benitez's plans at Madrid

    lucassilva-cropped_1x6dwwh5fhpim1jrpr6yzath7w.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Lucas Silva intends to fight for his place under new coach Rafael Benitez next season despite the competition for places in the centre.

The 22-year-old is reportedly surplus to requirements despite only arriving in January, with Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Asier Illarramendi all fighting for spots and Casemiro's return compounding matters.

But Silva nevertheless stated he is determined to force his way into Benitez's plans despite reported interest from Porto, Fiorentina and Sevilla this summer.

"I'm only thinking about staying at Real, getting more playing time and finding my place in the team," he told Marca. "Benitez is a very hardworking coach who wants committed players and I think I fit that profile rather well.

"I've taken advantage of the holidays to relax, although I've been training for a few days now so I'm raring to go. I'm prepared technically and psychologically in order to make a good start to the pre-season.

"They [Porto, Sevilla and Fiorentina] are big clubs and I'm happy that they're interested in me because it means I did something good in the past or in my games for Madrid.

"I was a little surprised by the stature of Madrid when I arrived, but I felt very good and comfortable in relation to the players, fans and [former coach Carlo] Ancelotti. I felt confident and got games and minutes when I arrived but stopped playing due to the decisions of the coach."Still, I was pleased with how I played when I did."

Silva arrived from Cruzeiro and featured initially before being dropped to the bench by Ancelotti in a campaign that saw los Blancos fail to win La Liga, the Champions League or the Copa del Rey.

    Galatasaray complete Podolski signing

    luka-podolski-galatasaray_cleh5j8ehbfh14gi6q7mn2q35.jpg

Galatasaray have completed the signing of Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski on a three-year deal.

The experienced Germany international endured a miserabe season following the bit part role he played in his nation's World Cup success, failing to re-establish himself in the Arsenal first team squad before being loaned out to Inter where he managed just one goal in 19 appearances.

But the 30-year-old believes he is the perfect place to restore his reputation and is looking forward to playing in the Champions League in front of some of Europe's most passionate supporters.

"Galatasaray also made proposals in the past year," Podolski said. "But this year there was more intense interest. My parents wanted me to come here.

"Galatasaray were champions last year. We will play to be champions in the coming years, we're looking to get to the next level."I've followed Galatasaray for a long time. I know there's a great atmosphere in the stadium.

"Galatasaray fans have given me so much attention and are excited about me. This is a big factor in my decision-making."

Real Madrid want to win everything, says Kroos

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has admitted that his side fell short of expectations last term and are now determined to win every trophy.

The Santiago Bernabeu club finished second in La Liga and were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League, having already been knocked out of the Copa del Rey.

Kroos has admitted that his team-mates were left disappointed by how 2014-15 panned out but remains delighted with his decision to swap Bayern Munich for Madrid last summer."We were at the door for two titles. We have a team that aspires to win everything," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"It would be great to win something."My decision was to go abroad, especially after winning the World Cup, and to go to Madrid was perfect. I was 100 per cent convinced of it.

"I’m happy. The first year in Madrid was very good. I’m established in the team and I hope to win titles in the coming years."Kroos has set up a foundation to help terminally ill children and is happy to be able to give something back to the cummunity.

"We want to support the parents that work so hard to care for their children but we also want to help those children fulfil their dreams," he added.

Gerson: Every player dreams of Barcelona and Juventus

Rising Brazilian star Gerson admits it is a dream of every player play for Barcelona or Juventus as speculation grows over a transfer.

Reports in Spain suggest the European champions have already secured a first option on the 18-year-old midfielder, with Juventus also making an effort to tempt the player to Turin. While Gerson says he is relaxed over his future and is solely focused on Fluminense, he concedes the lure of the Champions League finalists is strong.

"I just think about playing, I prefer to let my father deal with all these things," he told Fox Sports."Any player dreams of wearing the shirt of Barcelona or Juventus, they are among the best teams in the world.

"There's no point denying that I like the offers, but my mind is completely focused on Fluminense."

:baffled:Ramos: I'm not negotiating with anyone

    sergio-ramos-real-madrid-malaga-liga-bbva-04182015_zh8vmyzs8js51r66wfs5sqlat.jpg

Sergio Ramos has issued a curt response to questions over his future, telling reporters "I'm not negotiating with anyone".

Reports in Spain have suggested Ramos' relationship with Madrid president Florentino Perez has reached breaking point amid persistent talk of a potential move to Manchester United.

United retain an interest in the 29-year-old defender as discussions continue over the future of David de Gea, who is wanted by Madrid this summer, but there is belief in some quarters that Ramos is angling for a greater pay packet from his current employers. However, when pressed by reporters at a wedding in Seville, Ramos was keen to stress he is not currently holding talks with either club.

"I'm not negotiating with anyone," he told Cuatro, having previously offered a simple "all is well".The World Cup-winner then declined to respond when pressed on whether he will stay at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

Ramos has spent 10 years with Real Madrid since joining from Liga rivals Sevilla, claiming 10 major trophies in that time.

Ronaldo: I want to work with Benitez

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_dkil5jj21ysk1d10mssaqoa5u.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is eager to work with new Real Madrid head coach Rafael Benitez - though he did add "we'll see what happens".

Benitez was appointed as Carlo Ancelotti's successor at the Santiago Bernabeu and Ronaldo offered his support to his outgoing boss following his sacking at the end of the season.

However, despite rumours of a possible bid from Paris Saint-Germain refusing to go away, the Portugal skipper says he is keen to work with the experienced Benitez in the coming campaign.

"I've never worked with him, but he's a coach with a lot of experience. We'll see what happens, but I want to work with him," he told SNTV."We'll see if we can win important titles. I'm eager to get working with him."

Ronaldo had little to add on talk of friend and team-mate Sergio Ramos' potential transfer to Manchester United this summer.

When asked whether the defender were close to an exit from the Spanish capital, he replied simply: "I don't know".

Nasri: I never asked for Arsenal comeback

    samir-nasri-manchester-city_10vlazypwm3cx1dezk1coy0g5p.jpg

Samir Nasri has rubbished speculation suggesting that he asked Arsene Wenger if he could return to Arsenal.

A report on Thursday claimed the France international had made contact with his former boss to find out if there were any possibility of coming back to the Emirates Stadium, only to be told that the Gunners are well stocked with attacking midfielders.

But Nasri - who has won two Premier League titles with Manchester City since leaving Arsenal in acrimonious circumstances in the summer of 2011 - insists he is not unsettled at the Etihad Stadium and there is no truth to the story.

"Never asked anyone to comeback!!" he wrote on Twitter. "Really happy where i am right now so stop with your silly story."

Nasri remains an unpopular figure among Arsenal fans for the manner of his departure and Wenger has spent in excess of €90 million on attacking midfielders Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez over the last two summer transfer windows.

'Ibrahimovic is a f***ing idiot - just like my brother' - Noel Gallagher

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-sweden-montenegro_1t4330zvv8o9q12lx2t9diu7sm.jpg

Musician Noel Gallagher has slammed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, describing him as "a f***ing idiot - just like my brother".

Paris Saint-Germain star Ibrahimovic has frequently married on-pitch brilliance with some off-the-field controversy, his latest indiscretion coming last season when he was heard to brand France "a s*** country" in an angry confrontation with a referee.

The outspoken has also openly criticised the likes of Pep Guardiola while comparing himself to God and leaving plenty of reporters red-faced in a headline-grabbing career to date.

And Gallagher, whose iconic band Oasis ultimately separated as his relationship with brother and lead singer Liam became untenable, says he sees too many disreputable similarities between the two.

"This guy is a f***ing idiot. I do not like him, he is full of crap," Gallagher, a huge Manchester City fan, told Swedish newspaper Afton Bladet."He is like my brother, he talks a lot but can’t back it up. Cool tattoos and a big mouth."

Ibrahimovic has been linked with a potential summer return to AC Milan after three highly successful seasons in Ligue 1.
