Fastest player at Manchester United? I'd back myself - Smalling

    1617552_heroa.jpg

Who really is the fastest player in Manchester United’s squad?

The question was initially posed to James Wilson earlier this year and the United striker revealed that the GPS tracking devices worn during training sessions proved Chris Smalling was statistically the fastest.

That may have raised a few eyebrows among United fans but when asked to verify Wilson’s revelation, Smalling had no hesitation in throwing his hat into the ring if a race were to ever happen.

“Yeah, I'd back myself against the majority of the team whether it be over five, 10 or 40 metres, to be honest,” Smalling told MUTV.

“I think I might surprise a few people but I think if you asked most of the guys, they wouldn't want to race me.”

United have revealed that Wayne Rooney officially clocked the highest speed of any player in the squad last season after he reached 35 kilometres per hour during the 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

But that wasn’t enough for the England captain to be name-checked when Smalling was asked who could be among those to challenge him.

“James Wilson is up there, Angel Di Maria is, I’d probably say Ashley Young as well,” said the defender.

Liverpool appoint Sean O'Driscoll as Rodgers’ assistant manager

    1617762_heroa.jpg

Liverpool have confirmed that Sean O'Driscoll has been appointed as the club’s assistant manager to Brendan Rodgers.

Pepijn Lijnders has also been appointed as first team development coach, a newly created role, after spending 12 months with Liverpool’s academy.

O'Driscoll has left his role as England Under-19 boss to take up his new position at Anfield, having previously managed Bournemouth and Doncaster Rovers.

"My admiration for Sean, as a professional, is well documented," Rodgers told the club’s official website.

"He is someone with a clear vision and philosophy and has proved he has the ability to transfer that knowledge, through his coaching, to the players.

"I am looking forward to working with him and also learning from his experiences and gaining valuable knowledge from his expertise."

O'Driscoll replaces Mike Marsh, who left Liverpool along with first-team coach Colin Pascoe last month.

Drogba reveals the toughest defenders he faced at Chelsea

    didier-drogba-chelsea-rio-ferdinand-manchester-united_1o1t51ctvsd4x1bk3jrfx22zl0.jpg

Didier Drogba says Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Carles Puyol are the three toughest defenders he has faced during his career.

The 37-year-old scored the winning goal against Manchester United in the 2007 FA Cup final and was sent off for slapping Vidic in extra time of the 2008 Champions League final that Chelsea went on to lose on penalties.

Drogba also faced Puyol eight times during his career but only managed to score three on three occasions during Chelsea’s Champions League matches against Barcelona.

In an interview with Rio Ferdinand for BT Sport, Drogba was asked by the former United defender to name the toughest defenders he’s played against.

“I’ve always said you and Vidic,” Drogba replied. “I will say when I was scoring against Manchester United I was really, really happy because I didn’t score much against them.

“So for me to score against you guys, it means that I had a good game!

“So, you two and Carles Puyol. Because he’s tough and a very good defender, but he’s a gentleman.”

Drogba arrived at Chelsea from Marseille in 2004 and the Ivory Coast international admits he needed to change his playing style in order to become a success at Stamford Bridge.

“The thing is I had to adapt to this game the Premier League. This wasn’t my game when I was in France. I was always at the limit of offside and running in behind,” said the striker.

“And when I came to Chelsea I became a target man, linking the game with Frank Lampard, with Arjen Robben, so I had to change my game to adapt to them because they not only could dribble but they could score goals.

“When I came at the beginning I thought I’d be the one, I’d be the king, I’d score the goals, but you realise you’ve got other people who can make the difference, so you’ve got to share.”

Guardiola has destroyed Gotze - agent

    pep-guardiola-mario-gotze-as-roma-bayern-munchen_1agzshzz2igfh1o51ziix8m37x.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has "destroyed" Mario Gotze and is responsible for his struggles there, according to the midfielder's agent.

The World Cup winner with Germany had been expected to play a starring role last season but was shuffled around positionally by Guardiola before being dropped for crucial semi-final ties in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal.

And the 23-year-old's representative has pointed the finger of blame at the trainer as the reason for the midfielder not fulfilling his potential so far, though he also ruled out an exit as of now . "Guardiola has destroyed Gotze. He feels like the coach doesn't have faith in him and yet still he is asked to be decisive when he gets on the pitch," Volker Struth told Bild .

"I'm surprised that Guardiola didn't use Gotze in important matches like the German Cup and Champions League semi-finals. He only plays in the easy games.
"I wonder why no one at the club has realised that and defended Mario. Bayern need a figure like former president Uli Hoeness again."

Gotze switched from Dortmund to Allianz Arena for €37 million in 2013 at Guardiola's request but has failed to truly make an impact in either of his two seasons in Bavaria.

Three clubs have made offers for Darmian - Torino president

    matteo-darmian-torino_1e0ecu727561216pn108kmmnm3.jpg

Torino president Urbano Cairo has revealed that the club have received three formal offers for Matteo Darmian, and has set a deadline for Sunday for a transfer to be completed.

Darmian emerged into the spotlight at the 2014 World Cup as one of the few bright sparks for Italy before enjoying a breakthrough season in Serie A and the Europa League with Torino.

HIs performances have alerted the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester United to his availability, and Cairo confirmed the 25-year-old can only leave the club before they begin pre-season training this weekend."Everyone who comes to the pre-season training camp will remain with us for the rest of the season," the club official told La Stampa.

"Sunday will be the deadline. Three offers have arrived for Darmian, but out of respect for the clubs who have made them, I won’t reveal who they are.
"Darmian is an extraordinary player who will want to try and win the Champions League one day."

The versatile defender came through AC Milan's youth ranks but left in 2010 in search of more first-team opportunities before signing for Torino in 2012.

Muller can break my World Cup goal record, says Klose

    miroslav-klose-germany-ghana-world-cup-2014-group-g-06212014_47vvslqhevxi1jl2fmw3wjce6.jpg

Former Germany striker Miroslav Klose is tipping Thomas Muller to surpass his World Cup goal tally.

The striker's 16th World Cup goal in the 7-1 semi-final win over hosts Brazil in last year's tournament established him as the highest scorer ever at the championships.

However, Klose believes Bayern Munich forward Muller, who has found the net 10 times in the competition already, will make the record his own by the end of his career.

“Thomas Muller could become the record scorer in the World Cup. He already has 10 goals," the veteran told Bild. "If he stays healthy, I assume he can still play in two more tournaments."Thomas has a nose for goals. In addition, he takes charge of penalties, something I was never allowed to do.”

Klose joined Per Mertesacker and Philipp Lahm in retiring from international football at the end of Germany's triumphant World Cup campaign, but has now revealed he would be keen to slip back into die Mannschaft colours.

“I talked to Germany coach Joachim Low just several weeks ago. A return to the national team is no issue at the moment," the 37-year-old, who recently signed an extension until 2016 with Lazio, said.

"One should never say never. My professional career only began at 21, really. Maybe that's why I can still play for longer."

Manchester United & Robin van Persie negotiating cut-price exit

    589331_heroa.jpg

Manchester United are in talks with Robin van Persie over a settlement agreement which would see the striker leave Old Trafford this summer, Goal understands.

Van Persie returned to pre-season training at Carrington on Monday amid strong speculation in Turkey that a move to Fenerbahce is close to completion.

But it is understood that the Netherlands international is hoping to have the final year of his contract - worth around €17 million (£12m) - paid up before he leaves.

United are keen to get his huge salary off the wage bill this summer, which already means they are likely to recoup a fee of around €7m (£5m) for a player signed for five times that amount in 2012.

That refuced fee would enable any suitors to stump up more in personal terms for Van Persie, but United are likely to face further financial burden in his pay-off.

The club hope to meet the 31-year-old in the middle, meaning a payment of around €8.5m (£6m) which could be spread over the final year of his Old Trafford deal or deposited as a parting gift in the form of a lump sum.

United, though, may be reluctant to sanction any cut-price transfer if they cannot reach an agreement with the striker.

Van Persie has grown increasingly frustrated with life at United in recent months, and with the European Championship likely representing his final shot at an international tournament next summer, he is keen to play regularly in the forthcoming campaign.

But his family are settled in Manchester - his son is on the books at Manchester City - and he has previously spoken of his desire to keep them happy.

"That tournament [Euro 2016] is going to play a big role in the choice I will make," he said in June. "But most important is the wish of my wife and children.

"Whatever I do, my wife Bouchra and children Shaqueel and Dina Layla are the highest of my priorities. They have to be happy."

The chances of a move elsewhere in England, or to one of the major European leagues, looks unlikely, however.

Goal reported in May that Real Madrid had made early enquiries about his services, but that interest was never followed up and Turkish sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have shown more of a willingness to complete a deal.

Fener have emerged as the leading candidates to secure his signature in recent days and on Monday the Istanbul club also confirmed the arrival of Nani.

The Portuguese winger signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford at the start of the 2013-14 season but struggled to break into David Moyes' team thanks to injuries and was subsequently sent out on loan by new boss Louis van Gaal last summer.

He impressed with Lisbon outfit Sporting, particularly in the Champions League, last season but was swiftly moved on to a new home ahead of United's return to training as they work towards the 2015-16 campaign.

Messi never disappoints, says Van Gaal

    louis-van-gaal-manchester-united_1iwvp74uy06f11nqfactbwqdxb.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has voiced his admiration for Lionel Messi and hailed the Barcelona star's consistency and humble attitude.

The 28-year-old is widely regarded as one of the best players the game has ever seen and the Dutch coach has nothing but praise for the Argentina international.
"Messi proves himself nearly every game," Van Gaal told United's official TV channel.

"Despite his immense talent, he remains very modest. I like that in him and I respect Messi a lot."

United meet Barcelona at the International Champions Cup later this month and Van Gaal is looking forward to meeting some old friends from his time at the Catalans, while admitting Xavi and Andres Iniesta's success makes him proud.

"It will be nice to see friends from my time there again, but there are a lot of new players," he added.

"I have to say that Barcelona still play with some players that I coached, so that is nice to see. But a lot of the staff have also remained there.

"Of course, you are always pleased that players who made their debut under you play so many times and for so long for a club. Xavi and Iniesta in particular are fine examples, but Victor Valdes as well."

Allegri & Marchisio agree Juventus renewals

    allegri-juventus-napoli-serie-a_1htzfgpex68rc1s56tsgurovb5.jpg

Juventus have confirmed that coach Massimiliano Allegri has committed his future to the club along with midfielder Claudio Marchisio.Allegri has signed a one-year extension to his contract and is now tied to the Serie A champions until June 2017.

The 47-year-old joined Juve in the summer of 2014 to replace Antonio Conte following the latter's decision to step down, signing a two-year deal with the Turin giants.

Allegri guided Juventus to the domestic double in his first season in charge, while also leading them to the Champions League final, and has now been rewarded with a 12-month extension to his existing deal."Allegri has recently extended his contract by a further year," club president Andrea Agnelli stated at a press conference on Monday.

The Livorno-born coach had been in charge of clubs such as Sassuolo, Cagliari and Milan before taking the reins at Juve last year.Meanwhile, Juventus have also announced the contract renewal of Marchisio.

"Marchisio has signed a five-year contract extension with the club," added Agnelli.
"He will be an important figure in the dressing room to explain what Juventus means to our new arrivals."

The Italy international's previous contract was due to expire at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, but he has now signed a new deal with the Serie A champions until June 2020."It's a feeling that sits alongside my first training session in 1993. I'm delighted to wear the shirt I've always wanted," the midfielder stated on his new deal.

"Finding the motivation to keep giving even more is what matters most. My love for Juventus helps me give everything I've got in each training session and game.

"The Champions League will be tough as it is every year, but we must keep consolidating our position on the European stage."

Marchisio is a product of the Juventus youth academy and has developed into a key figure ever since returning to his boyhood club from a one-year loan spell with Empoli in 2007-08.

The 29-year-old has made over 300 appearances in all competitions for Juve, winning four Serie A titles, two Supercoppe Italiana and one Coppa Italia. He also had his say on the arrival of Sami Khedira and Mario Mandzukic, as well as the exit of Andrea Pirlo to New York City FC.

"Khedira and Mandzukic offer added quality and Champions League experience. Whoever has come into our dressing room over the past few years has always settled in well.

"Pirlo has been an important player for Juventus, he's helped me out a great deal over the years."

Koeman: Manchester United have bid for Schneiderlin

    811632_heroa.jpg

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman says Manchester United have made a bid for Morgan Schneiderlin but it "wasn't serious".

Goal revealed on June 29 that United were closing in on a deal for the France international, though they had yet to meet Saints' £25 million asking price.

Former France boss Raymond Domenech said on Sunday that Schneiderlin must move to Old Trafford for the good of his career and Koeman appears sympathetic to the 25-year-old's wishes.

He told reporters: "A lot of speculation, but two weeks ago we had a bid from Manchester United. It wasn’t enough, it wasn’t serious, and [there have been] no more bids till today [Monday].

"Everybody knows the situation of Morgan. I understand the player - if he can get a big move to a big [club], I can understand it.

"I hope that if there is any business, that it will be soon because it’s best for the player, best for us, we have to prepare ourselves if we sell the player.

"I’ve had a lot of meetings with Morgan. I had a meeting last week, everybody knows his situation. But it’s important for the player to do a good pre-season. And we will see what happens in the next few days.

"I don’t talk about money, about numbers, it’s not my business, it’s up to the club."

Casillas wants Porto move, says agent

    iker-casillas-real-madrid_1mbija61g8nie1bv99m9ytdok9.jpg

Iker Casillas' agent Carlo Cutropia has revealed that the goalkeeper is keen to leave Real Madrid for Porto ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

The 34-year-old's future at the Santiago Bernabeu side is in doubt due to the club's desire to lure Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea back to La Liga, while Keylor Navas has also set his sights on the No.1 jersey at Madrid.Casillas is therefore open to a move away from the Bernabeu and he is hopeful Madrid will allow him to join Porto.

"Casillas is pretty excited about the opportunity to join Porto," his representative told Record."We hope Real Madrid will allow him to move on and give him an easy exit."

The Spain international has made over 700 appearances in all competitions for Madrid since breaking into the first team in 1999-2000.

He has won five La Liga titles with Madrid, as well as two Copa del Rey trophies, four times the Supercopa de Espana, three Champions Leagues, two Uefa Super Cups, the Fifa Club World Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.His contract with Madrid is due to expire in June 2017.

    Juventus hint at Pogba exit

    608901_heroa.jpg

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has hinted that Paul Pogba could leave the club this summer.

Goal understands Manchester City are ready to set a new world record transfer fee in order to land Pogba, although it is understood the 22-year-old midfielder would prefer a move to Barcelona.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been associated with the France international and could make an approach following the relaxation of Uefa's Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions.

Last week Juventus publicly denied reports that a deal had been put in place with the European champions, who would be likely to let the Frenchman stay in Turin for another year due to their transfer ban.

But Angelli has moved to lower expectations of him remaining with the club beyond the close of the transfer window.

"Nothing is 100 per cent in football, players are not for sale starting from September 1," he said at a press conference.

"Some years ago we said [Christian] Vieri was not for sale and he went to Atletico Madrid few days after..."

Pogba's deal with Juventus runs until 2019.

New Fenerbahce signing Nani is confident Robin van Persie would be an instant hit at the Istanbul side if he were to leave Manchester United for Turkey.

The Portugal international signed a three-year deal with Fener on Monday to complete his €6 million move and he would welcome his former United team-mate with open arms.

Van Persie has been heavily linked with a move for the Netherlands international, who is in talks with the Old Trafford side over a settlement agreement that would seem him leave the club.

Atletico too late to cancel Alderweireld clause, says Koeman

    tobyalderweireld-cropped_yv568n8kc2rd19ing0yiruc3e.jpg

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman claims Atletico Madrid were too slow to cancel a clause in Toby Alderweireld’s contract that allows the Saints to sign him on a permanent deal.

The Saints had an option to sign Alderweireld for €9.5 million after his loan spell at St Mary’s last season.

Atletico could have bought out the clause for €2m but Southampton believe the Spanish side did not take up the option within the specified time period.

Southampton are now threatening legal action against Atletico Madrid, who are understood to have agreed a deal worth around €16m for Alderweireld to join Tottenham.

“What came out in the press [was true]. Southampton signed an option to the player and Atletico Madrid are trying to pay back the option,” Koeman told reporters on Monday.

“To our knowledge, it was too late and I don’t know what happened with Tottenham.

“Les Reed [Southampton’s director of football] is working on that situation, I’m waiting on more news on the situation of Toby.”

Alderweireld is believed to favour a transfer to Spurs amid reports that he will undergo a medical on Monday, but Koeman remains keen to sign the Belgian and says the 26-year-old told him earlier in the summer that he wanted to join Southampton permanently.

“Of course [I want him back]," Koeman added. "And the player told us the same. [He said it] before the summer.

“I had a message on my mobile with Toby, but that’s private. I mentioned we had a talk to Toby before the end of last season and he was very happy about Southampton. We mentioned to the player that we’d like to continue and that was the case with Atletico - but what happened after, I don’t know.

“I don’t know [if we’ll match Tottenham’s offer]. I think it’s more up to the club and Les Reed, they are working on that business.”

Juventus have confirmed Andrea Pirlo has left the club to sign for New York City FC.The Italy international had long been linked with a move to the MLS franchise and the reigning Serie A champions have now made his departure official.

"Andrea Pirlo has announced that he will continue his career in the United States, bringing the curtain down on four extraordinary seasons with the Bianconeri," a statement on the official Juventus website reads."Pirlo has ended his magnificent four-year stay at Juventus after officially completing a move to MLS outfit New York City.

"The mercurial midfielder represents the beginning and, until now, the progression of a cycle that has seen the Bianconeri return to the top table of football in Italy and Europe. His visionary passing, pinpoint assists, spectacular goals and masterful free-kicks have been instrumental in the club's continued rise."

Pirlo started his professional career with Brescia and also played for Inter, Reggina and Milan before joining Juventus in 2011.

He will offically join NYCFC on July 21 as their third designated player with David Villa and Frank Lampard already on their roster.

He told NYCFC.com: "I have been wanting this experience for a long time and now that the opportunity materialised I wanted to take it. This is a club on the rise and shares my same hunger to achieve important results in the League. I am hoping to win."

He added: "I had several opportunities to play outside of Italy, but I never had a doubt in picking New York for the enthusiasm of the people that come watch the team.

“I met with the coach, Jason Kreis, and he gave me a fantastic impression of the club. He has well defined ideas in mind, and I am sure we will get on well and create a good relationship to train well and try to win together.”
