Roma 2-2 Manchester City (4-5 pens): Sterling strikes on debut as Hart performs penalty heroics

    1678292_heroa.jpg

Raheem Sterling scored on his first appearance in a Manchester City shirt but his team were twice pegged back by Roma before winning on penalties at the MCG.

The build-up to Tuesday's International Champions Cup match in Melbourne was predictably dominated by City's new record signing and he delivered immediately with a cool finish.

But, after stunning strikes from Miralem Pjanic and Adem Ljajic sandwiched a goal from City's Kelechi Iheanacho, the Premier League side needed penalties to win.

Hart delivered in the shootout, scoring his own spot kick before saving Seydou Doumbia and Seydou Keita's efforts to give City a 5-4 victory.

Welcomed to the pitch at the MCG by a chorus of boos, Sterling provided some ammunition to those hoping that he would fail in a sky blue shirt when he slipped over inside the opening minute. But soon after, the 20-year-old showed why City were so keen to secure his signature as he slotted calmly into the bottom-right corner in a one-on-one with Morgan De Sanctis after being played in by Iheanacho.

Roma levelled eight minutes in, as Pjanic unleashed a long-range rocket that gave Willy Caballero no chance, before David Silva - central to most of City's best moments before he was withdrawn at the interval - forced De Sanctis into a top save.

Sterling was regularly in the spotlight in the first half and the former Liverpool man had a clear penalty turned down in the 23rd minute when he was tripped by Alessandro Florenzi having expertly shimmied past the Roma full-back.

Silva also picked out Iheanacho in the 33rd minute but the latter's header was straight at De Sanctis before Roma finished the half stronger - two cut-backs forcing desperate clearances before Daniele De Rossi's header went just over the bar.

Inevitably, the second half barely got going due to a raft of substitutions from both coaches.

It was City, though, who hit the front early in the second period, as Iheanacho got the goal that his performance deserved, with former Chelsea and Arsenal full-back Ashley Cole inadvertently providing the assist. Cole chipped team-mate Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa with his back-pass and Iheanacho took advantage, firing past De Sanctis in the 51st minute.

The relatively sparse crowd inside the cavernous MCG had to wait until the 87th minute for another goal, with Ljajic beating Hart from 20 yards from a free kick, before the England goalkeeper decided the contest in the shootout.

:)Brazil legend Pele discharged from hospital

    pele-04172015_k7hc0emjhcnu1jmu5br2jg4q8.jpg

Brazil legend Pele has been discharged from Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein one week after being admitted for back surgery. The 74-year-old underwent a successful operation in Sao Paulo to correct a trapped nerve which had left him with pain in his legs.

It was the third time in a year that the three-time World Cup winner has needed medical treatment after suffering a urinary infection following a bout of kidney stones, while a prostate condition required surgery back in May.

The most decorated player in World Cup history and a two-time Copa Libertadores champion with Santos, Pele is said to be in good spirits and will continue his recovery at home.

Pele led Brazil to World Cup glory in 1958, 1962 and 1970 and his country’s all-time leading scorer with 77 goals from 92 internationals.

'Well done Sterling!' - Balotelli risks ire of Liverpool fans

    1678852_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli has risked angering the Liverpool fanbase by tweeting praise for Raheem Sterling after his goalscoring debut for Manchester City.

The England international finally completed a £49 million move to the Etihad Stadium earlier in July after a protracted and bad-tempered transfer saga, having refused to sign a new contract at Anfield.

Sterling has drawn a great deal of abuse from Liverpool supporters as a result of his pursuit of the switch and, after he netted just three minutes into his first pre-season appearance for his new club on Tuesday, his now-former colleague offered some support.

Balotelli's comments quickly prompted a swarm of angry replies and he moved quickly to insist that he was not trying to criticise his own team's supporters but called for an end to the bitterness over Sterling's departure.
Balotelli's own future at Anfield is in doubt after he struggled in his first season with the Reds in 2014-15, with Danny Ings and Divock Origi among the new recruits up front this summer.

Luis Suarez: Pedro should stay at Barcelona

    1066422_heroa.jpg

Luis Suarez hopes that Barcelona team-mate Pedro will snub reported interest from Premier League clubs and stay at Camp Nou.

The Spain winger has been linked with Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool after starting only 15 Primera Division games for the Spanish champions last season.

Pedro only signed a new contract with the Catalan giants in June but the 27-year-old's release clause is said to have been reduced to around £22 million (€30m).

Barca striker Suarez is aware of the possibility of his team-mate looking for first-team football elsewhere but is eager for the forward to remain with the Champions League holders.

The Uruguayan told Marca: "Pedro's thing is an individual decision. He's had many years at the club, he has won many titles and his decision will be respected.

"But as a team-mate, obviously, I want Pedro to stay because of the importance that he has on a group level."

The Spain international joined Barcelona's youth academy in 2004 and made the step up to the first team in 2008, going on to win five Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Inter: Gotze wins it late for Guardiola's men

    1678552_heroa.jpg

Mario Gotze came off the bench to fire Bayern Munich to victory over Inter on Tuesday, with the Bundesliga side running out 1-0 winners thanks to his late goal.
Juventus are one of a host of top European clubs to be linked with a move for the Germany midfielder, who refused to discuss his future ahead of the clash with Inter at the Shanghai Stadium.

Half-time substitute Gotze showed his class with a composed finish 10 minutes from time to ensure Bayern made it two wins out of two on their tour of China, having beaten Valencia 4-1 on Saturday.

The Bavarian giants were worthy winners and could have prevailed by a more emphatic margin if Thomas Muller, reportedly a target for Manchester United, and Robert Lewandowski had taken their chances.

There were mixed feelings for Inter as Jeison Murillo impressed on his debut, but the Colombia defender came off just before half-time after seemingly picking up a calf injury.Xabi Alonso breathed a sigh of relief when he was dispossessed by Hernanes, who unleashed a well struck shot which was deflected over the bar.

Bayern were soon knocking the ball around with a swagger and Lewandowski had a chance to put them in front only six minutes in, but his finish brought a fine save out of Samir Handanovic.

Murillo, wearing a mask after undergoing surgery on a broken nose, was in the thick of the action on his Inter bow and the defender cleared Philipp Lahm's goal-bound shot off the line after some uncertain defending from the Serie A side 10 minutes before half-time.

An impressive debut for Murillo came to an end when he appeared to pick up an injury and was substituted prior to the break, while Lahm was also withdrawn late in the first half.

Douglas Costa was causing all sorts of problems down the right in his second appearance for Bayern and Muller shot just wide of the far post after racing into the penalty area and taking a pass from the impressive Brazil international.

Gotze was one of four Bayern substitutes to come on at half-time, with Muller among the quartet withdrawn and Inter's big-money signing Geoffrey Kondogbia was replaced early in the second half.

Sebastian Rode came on for Costa and had a chance to make an immediate impact when he latched onto Thiago Alcantara's pass, but failed to hit the target.

Gotze won it 10 minutes from time, though, gathering a precise pass from Rode before rounding Assane Demoya Gnoukouri and applying the finish.

Lahm: Muller could leave Bayern Munich

    thomasmuller-cropped_rgdlzu9cnkn913yn7qxvm6b2g.jpg

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm accepts that there are no guarantees that Thomas Muller will stay at the club amid links to Manchester United.

Reports in the German media have suggested that the Premier League side are preparing a second raid on the Bundesliga champions after securing the signing of Bastian Schweinsteiger earlier in July, with a big bid for the forward on the cards.

Lahm offered no assurances to Bayern's supporters that his fellow World Cup winner would remain at the Allianz Arena instead of reuniting with Schweinsteiger and Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

"In football you can imagine everything," he told reporters. "It's not my decision. In football, it goes so, so quickly.

"It's not always only up to the player. In football everything goes very, very quickly. I think you can never give a guarantee that it will go one way or the other.

"As a result, I certainly can't give any guarantee for Thomas Muller or talk about whether I can imagine him leaving. You can always imagine anything happening."

Juventus allowed to negotiate with Draxler

    julian-draxler-schalke-04_mawt8fi8m4ur1qpmj49tafw7l.jpg

Schalke have given Juventus permission to open negotiations with Julian Draxler, Goal understands, but the two sides are yet to agree a fee for him.

Juve sporting director Fabio Paratici flew to Germany to open talks with the Bundesliga club on Tuesday and the Serie A side are offering €25 million for the World Cup winner, who plays as a winger but can also be utilised as a No.10.However, the Gelsenkirchen side value him closer to €35m and it is understood that the Germany international would request an annual salary of between €5-6 million.

Juve are looking to reinvest in their squad, as they are about to offload Arturo Vidal to Bayern Munich for around €37m, while Andrea Pirlo has gone to New York City FC.

Draxler is contracted to S04 until summer 2018 and his €45m release clause expired in June this year.
Schalke see former Bayern Munich player and current Inter man Xherdan Shaqiri as a potential replacement, with the Switzerland international expected to leave the Nerazzurri this summer.

Draxler has struggled with injuries over the last two seasons and featured in just 15 Bundesliga games for Schalke last term, scoring two goals.

:yes:Ibrahimovic is still world class - Trapattoni

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-paris-saint-germain_18u6zb118zh311a0phvjft1ayz.jpg

Giovanni Trapattoni says Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still world class, insisting AC Milan should still look to sign him despite his age.

The 33-year-old Paris Saint-Germain striker has been linked with a move back to the Rossoneri as they continue to invest in the first-team after last season's poor 10th place finish.

Despite the acquisition of Carlos Bacca and Luiz Adriano, Milan are still looking to boost their attacking options and Trapattoni believes Ibrahimovic would be a good signing.

“I don’t fear thirty-year-old players," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “Ibrahimovic is world class, a champion with a good head and personality - he is a unique character, but it’s up to the coach to work with him."

“They need a defender, but if he costs half of Milan like Romagnoli, then it’s better not to. Better to get a free transfer or an internal solution.”

San Siro rivals Inter are also splashing out to improve their team and Trapattoni is optimistic about their future.“It’s good that Mancini has a president who wants to spend money," he added. "Although he appears to want immediate results...

“With the Geoffrey Kondogbia transfer, the problem was that too much was out in the open.“At Juve, but also at Inter, we didn’t give names to newspapers. Otherwise public pressure forces you to spend.

“Inter and Milan are rebuilding, Lazio, Roma and Napoli are already strong, but Juve have the advantage, also because of the atmosphere there.”

Real Madrid treated Casillas badly - Forlan

    iker-casillas-real-madrid-07132015_mile9lrzmahu1gc8fcu72ygqd.jpg

Diego Forlan has hit out at Real Madrid for their treatment of Iker Casillas. After a rough two seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, the goalkeeper brought an
end to 25 years of service with the club and signed for Porto.

Casillas sat alone in Madrid's press room as he announced his departure before a last minute farewell event was thrown for him.

And Forlan says it is sad to see Casillas and Robin van Persie, who left Manchester United to join Fenerbahce this summer, make a step backwards, adding that they deserve better."Madrid could have treated Casillas better and defended him from the attacks in the press and from his own fans," he wrote in The National.

"He’s always had an impeccable attitude, in spite of being punished for every error.
"I have huge respect for Porto - a great club that’s always in the hunt for titles. But they aren’t Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"It’s a step backwards for Casillas, just like it was for Robin van Persie leaving Manchester United to go to Fenerbahce.

“Casillas could have left Los Blancos a year ago, having been a European and world champion. Just like Xavi left Barcelona with full honours, having won the treble this year with Barcelona."But there are no feelings in football, it’s a cruel profession.”

The Penarol striker came face-to-face with the World Cup winner several times during his days at Villarreal and Atletico Madrid and says both he and Sergio Aguero found him impossible to beat.“I played against him a lot of times and I can confirm that when I was in Spain he was the best in the world.

"I remember in a derby at the Vicente Calderon in which Aguero and I talked about how it was impossible to score against him."We shot so many times and he stopped everything."

:cool:Schweinsteiger: Man United can win titles this season

    bastianschweinsteiger-cropped_9stkebvz8r64zfxhv0zbumvo.jpg

Bastian Schweinsteiger is confident that Manchester United have enough quality to win silverware this season.

The World Cup winner penned a three-year deal at Old Trafford on July 13, bringing an end to his long-standing association with Bayern Munich.

Having trained with his new team-mates for a week, the Germany international has been impressed with the talent on show, and believes that they can challenge for the title under Louis van Gaal.

"I have to say the quality is huge," he told the club's official website. "I am sure, with this team, it is possible to win titles and after a week I can say that.

"We have a good defence, we have good defensive players, and we have quality players who can make the difference in high-level matches.

"There are some guys who will come later so I think this team has a lot of possibilities and qualities."

Schweinsteiger made his first United appearance in their 1-0 win against America in the International Champions Cup on Saturday, the 30-year-old playing the whole second half after replacing Michael Carrick.

Roma want to win the title for Totti - Pjanic

    francesco-totti-roma-juventus-serie-a-02032015_tbknmvy611a212jhfokpqfypz.jpg

Miralem Pjanic says Roma want to win the Serie A title this season to honour Francesco Totti. The 38-year-old has been in the Giallorossi first-team since 1992 but is now in the final year of his contract.

The Roma legend's only Serie A title with the club came in 2000-01, while it has been seven years since he won his second and last Coppa Italia.

The club looked like challenging Juventus to the championship in each of the last two years but dropped out of the race, but Pjanic says he hopes this year is the one that sees Rudi Garcia's men bring an end to the Turin side's reign of dominance."We hope to win the title to give it to Totti," he told Fox Australia. "When he's on the pitch, everything is easier.

"I feel good and I'm happy, because Roma are doing everything to build an even stronger team than last year. Juve won the title last year because they were able to deal with the moments of pressure better than we were. This year we are motivated to try to conquer it."Roma have been linked with a move for Edin Dzeko and Pjanic echoed Totti's opinion on the matter, insisting the Manchester City striker would add a lot to the Serie A side.

"We will see what will happen in the coming days, I talked to him, he is an important player who can give us a lot," he added.

Kane: I'll be ready for Tottenham opener

    harrykane-cropped_pmyox3cdd7t61hx2sb0k0upwm.jpg

Tottenham striker Harry Kane is confident of being ready for the new Premier League season despite only returning to training earlier in July.

The youngster enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2014-15, scoring 21 league goals as Mauricio Pochettino's side finished fifth, earning himself an England cap and a debut goal in the process.

Kane travelled to the Under-21 European Championship with England early in the summer and was consequently given time off by Spurs.

But, despite his late return to the camp, he has no fear about regaining match fitness in time for their first game against Manchester United.

"I don't think I'll miss the start of the season; there's more than enough time to be ready," he told the Football Association's official website.

"Even though I'm away, it's not always physically a problem as sometimes you need to get away mentally as well.

"I still keep myself fit and in shape - it isn't like I just let myself go - so I'll be ready for the start of the season for sure.

"Hopefully I can go on to do better and bigger things."

Dortmund 4-1 Luzern: Grosskreutz returns in routine win

    marcoreuscropped_f6e63nu6pduv13hilif3yuj3d.jpg

Borussia Dortmund put last week's friendly defeat to Bochum behind them with a commanding 4-1 pre-season friendly triumph over Luzern.

Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel oversaw a run of three wins, which included 17 goals, before a 2-1 defeat to Bochum on Friday, but there was no risk of a repeat result on Tuesday.

Goals from Marco Reus, Kevin Kampl, Mats Hummels and Moritz Leitner were enough to see off Luzern in Switzerland, with the hosts responding through Frane Cirjak.

Reus put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute with a cool finish from Shinji Kagawa's square pass. The Japan international also laid on the second for Kampl 12 minutes later, chipping in a cross for his fellow midfielder to nod home from close range.

With the hosts struggling to create any chances of note, Dortmund increased their hold on the game with two goals in the opening 16 minutes of the second half.
Hummels netted a superb half-volley from the edge of the box and Leitner turned in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's pass to make it 4-0.

Luzern finally mounted a response courtesy of Cirjak, before Kevin Grosskreutz came on for the final few minutes following five months out with a knee injury.
Tuchel's side face Serie A champions Juventus on Saturday.

Szczesny to join Roma on loan

    1406692_heroa.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is poised to seal a loan move to Roma, Goal has learned.

The Poland international lost his place to David Ospina for the second half of the 2014-15 Premier League season, although he played in five of Arsenal's six games as they recorded back-to-back FA Cup triumphs.

The Gunners signed Petr Cech from Chelsea for around £11 million earlier this summer, a deal hailed by many as a turning point for Arsene Wenger's side in their quest to win the title for the first time since 2004.

Wenger has now decided that it is Szczesny who will be cut loose ahead of the new campaign, with Ospina and Damian Martinez to provide competition for Cech.

The Gunners boss believes 22-year-old Martinez, who signed from Independiente in 2010, has a bright future at the club.

He even included the Argentine when he claimed last season that there were three "world class" goalkeepers on the books at the Emirates, a stance he re-affirmed last week ahead of the Londoners' participation in the Asia Trophy.

It is reported in Italy that Roma will pay €400,000 (£281,000) for the loan move, and will retain the option to make the deal permanent.

Szczesny was caught smoking in the changing rooms following defeat to Southampton at the turn of the year, and while Wenger denied he was dropped as a result, he did not make another Premier League apprance for the rest of the season.

During the final months of the campaign he was urged by former Poland keepers Jan Tomaszewski and Jerzy Dudek to quit the club, and ahead of the FA Cup final victory over Aston Villa the 25-year-old was forced to distance himself from criticism of Wenger by his own father.

He will now move to Roma, where 38-year-old Morgan De Sanctis made 35 league appearances last season.

The Giallorossi finished second in Serie A in 2014-15, 17 points behind champions Juventus.

:D'We are all in a strange world' - Mourinho hits back at Martinez over Stones pursuit

    1669432_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has hit back at Roberto Martinez's criticism of Chelsea's pursuit of Everton defender John Stones.

Goal understands the Premier League champions are preparing a £28 million offer having seen an initial bid of £20m rejected, with Martinez unhappy at Chelsea's "open" pursuit of the 21-year-old.

Mourinho has insisted he will up the club's bid unless he is told the player is not for sale, adding "it's an open market", and now joked that he will only bid in Martinez's "strange world" when the window shuts.

"Our strategy for the Premier League is going to change next year," Mourinho told reporters. "Next year we are going to make the first bid on the 1st of September.

"On the 1st of September we will do a bid for the season later. Because at this moment, until the 31st of August, it is closed. The market is closed. We are all in a strange world. We are all in a strange world.

"We think it is open but it is not open. It is closed. So on the 1st of September we are going to make a bid for the next season."

The expected bid for £28 million is in stark contrast to the £3m Everton paid Barnsley for Stones just two years ago, but Mourinho accepts the inflated prices now paid for young talent.

He added: "That is the market. And you only pay it if you want. If you don't want to pay it, don't pay. It's as simple as that. The market has no rules or limits from season to season.

"And the only surprise comes that the limits change – and not even the introduction of [Financial Fair Play] is able to control the market. The market is where it is and it's up to the clubs to decide yes or no."

PSG 4-2 Fiorentina: Ibrahimovic shines as Blanc's men secure friendly win

    1681602_heroa.jpg

An impressive Paris Saint-Germain were far too good for Fiorentina at the International Champions Cup, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic amongst the scorers in a 4-2 win.

Jean-Kevin Augustin continued his good form with a brace, while Blaise Matuidi was also on the scoresheet at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Paulo Sousa's first game in charge of Fiorentina did not quite go to plan, athough Joaquin and Giuseppe Rossi did find the net for the Serie A side.

After watching his youngsters beat Benfica 3-2, Laurent Blanc added some experience to his squad for their second outing, with Ibrahimovic, Gregory van der Wiel and Matuidi all among the starting XI, while Mario Gomez was up front for Fiorentina.

And the Italians were unlucky not to go ahead in the 11th minute.

Nicolo Fazzi stepped up to take a 30-yard free-kick and his effort gave Kevin Trapp no chance, but the German goalkeeper was fortunate as he watched the strike hit the post and bounce clear.

PSG kept possession well without looking particularly threatening, but Ibrahimovic almost gave them the lead just before the half-hour mark.

The Sweden star released Van der Wiel down the right before meeting the Dutchman's cross, yet he could only poke wide from inside the area.

That duo would combine again to set up the opening goal in the 35th minute.

Ibrahimovic fed out a pass to Van der Wiel, whose cross found Matuidi for the easiest of tap-ins.

Just six minutes later and it was 2-0 as Matuidi turned provider, splitting the defence with a through ball for Augustin to place into the bottom corner.

Fiorentina were the better of the teams early in the second half and Ante Rebic fired well wide from an angle when he perhaps should have done better.

They pulled a goal back on the hour-mark through Joaquin, whose 30-yard stunner gave Trapp no chance.

Khouma Babacar fired over in a one-on-one soon after and Fiorentina thought they had equalised moments after that, only for the offside flag to be raised.

Ibrahimovic scored the goal he deserved in the 69th minute with a first-time finish from a Lucas Moura cross.

Augustin then completed his brace with a long-range effort that goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu should have dealt with, ensuring Rossi's late penalty meant little.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reiterated that the club will attempt to sign a "surprise" striker in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have offloaded both Radamel Falcao, who joined Chelsea after the conclusion of his loan spell at Old Trafford, and Robin van Persie as Van Gaal makes adjustments to his squad ahead of the 2015-16 campaign.

That leaves Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and James Wilson as the club's recognised strikers and while Van Gaal has again hinted that a "surprise" addition could follow, he has insisted that it will not be a name that has cropped up in the media.

He told reporters ahead of United's pre-season clash against San Jose Earthquakes: "He [the 'surprise striker] is in the process.

"It's not the striker the media has written about. You have to wait and see. The transfer period is open until September 1 so we have to wait."

Van Gaal's comments would appear to rule out Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani, who has been linked with a move to United and potentially as part of a deal to take Angel Di Maria to the French capital.

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has also been touted as a potential signing and Goal understands United have expressed an interest in signing the France international, should he become available.

Roma 2-2 Manchester City (4-5 pens): Sterling strikes on debut as Hart performs penalty heroics
