Guardiola isn't the best, Mourinho is - Matthaus

    hd-jose-mourinho-chelsea_1f6qyg0khdr6e17z1ern7zp02c.jpg

Lothar Matthaus has hailed Jose Mourinho as the best coach in the world, insisting he is better than Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola.

The Portuguese manager has won league titles with Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid, while Guardiola oversaw the most successful spell in Barcelona's history and has won two Bundesliga titles with Bayern so far, while both coaches have lifted the Champions League twice. The pair have been seen as the two leading coaches in football at the moment, though Matthaus believes the Chelsea boss is more advanced.

"Pep is not the best coach in the world," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I prefer Mourinho. He is the No.1, because Mourinho is more transparent and more direct than Guardiola.

"I've been told that from the players he has coached: He tells you everything to your face."

Guardiola's future at Bayern has become uncertain, with the coach tied to the club until 2016, though he admits he has not decided if he will stay.

Matthaus, though, believes the Spaniard is on his way out of the Allianz Arena in the near future and wants former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp to replace him."He will go," the former Bayern player said. "What sense does it make to wait until winter to renew your contract? Either you do it now or you're going.

"I have a lot of respect for Guardiola, he has won so much, but he must be clearer. Why don't you just sign a deal? Speak clearly!"I have a German favourite to succeed him: Klopp. There are two foreign candidates: Mourinho, but he will not leave Chelsea, and Carlo Ancelotti."

The 54-year-old former Germany international also touched on Bayern's Mario Gotze and Schalke youngster Julian Draxler, both of whom he does not believe have the mentality required to reach the top level."They are good, young and technically sound, but they do not have the character of a champion.

"There is always something missing for them to be at 100 per cent. If you're Götze and not playing, then go to the coach and he puts you on. But he does not do that.
"The two are not guys like Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo or Arturo Vidal."

'Benzema will stay' - Benitez rules out Arsenal switch

    karim-benzema-real-madrid_qotw08cd7j2514g6rfvkimf8j.jpg

Rafael Benitez says he has no reason to believe that Karim Benzema will leave Real Madrid this summer.

Goal revealed in May that Arsenal had identified Benzema as a potential acquisition, with the Gunners believing that the France international would be open to a move to the Emirates.

It is understood that Arsenal are happy to play a waiting game as they attempt to secure the striker’s signature, but Benitez is not expecting any late developments ahead of the new season.

"Benzema, I think, is going to stay with us," he told reporters ahead of his side's Audi Cup semi-final clash with Tottenham. "I am very happy with him. I have no reason to think he will go."

The Spanish coach is happy with the squad he has got but believes more signings will be made as they look to improve on last season, in which they lost out on La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey to Barcelona, though he refused to comment on the potential signing of David De Gea from Manchester United.

"I said before that Madrid have signed some players and have a great squad, but I aim to improve the team and to be as competitive as we have always been.

"I have said in five press conferences that I do not want to talk about players of other teams. We have very good goalkeepers in Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla."

Benitez was also full of praise for Gareth Bale, whom he expects to recover from a poor 2014-15 campaign and be a key player for Los Blancos next term.

"Gareth is a huge player for us. I know he wants to play well, he is happy and going to have a good safe season."

    Benteke handed Liverpool No.9 shirt

    christianbenteke-cropped_j1zrgnqlnvyd144q6dxaqbcne.jpg

Brendan Rodgers has handed the iconic Liverpool No.9 shirt to Christian Benteke ahead of the new season.

The Belgian joined the Reds earlier this summer for £32 million from Aston Villa and looks set to lead the attack in their season opener away at Stoke.

Benteke made an instant impression on Sunday, scoring a wonderful volley from the edge of the area in a friendly win over Swindon Town.

And team-mate Kolo Toure paid tribute to the 24-year-old: "For Christian to score on his debut, it can give him the confidence to go on and have a great season."

Benteke follows in the footsteps of Robbie Fowler, Fernando Torres and Ian Rush as Reds players to wear the No.9 shirt.

Signing Ibrahimovic would be a breakthrough for Milan - Mihajlovic

    sinisa-mihajlovic-milan_o888cwr2f2ll1rzm83etityxc.jpg

AC Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic believes signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be a massive boost to the team. The Paris Saint-Germain striker has been linked with a move back to the Serie A side and has said that his next move will be a "big surprise".

Mihajlovic has admitted he would like to bring the Swedish striker back to San Siro as he would make the team more competitive."I can say anything about a transfer. But he would make a difference," Mihajlovic told reporters.

"If he came here, it would be great for us, a breakthrough. We would be more competitive."We will try to sign Alessio Romagnoli from Roma."

There has been a change at the very top of the club, Bee Taechaubol having bought 48 per cent of Milan from Silvio Berlusconi and Mihajlovic is enthusiastic about the San Siro side's new potential."For me there is no change. If Mr. Bee wants to help the Berlusconi family and bring in more money, then we like that, but it's no big change for us."

After finishing 10th in Serie A last season, the Rossoneri have added the likes of Carlos Bacca, Andrea Bertolacci and Luiz Adriano to the squad and the coach believes they can aim for a top three finish this term.

"We want to be among the top three in Italy, we know it will be difficult because other teams have been reinforced with important signings, but we have a good team, we have made big additions such as Luiz Adriano, Bacca and Bertolacci and they have been working together for a month."

    Pochettino rejects Soldado exit talk

    roberto-soldado_hr78cqtu2coh1b4lehly7je5i.jpg

Mauricio Pochettino has insisted Roberto Soldado has a future at Tottenham and rejected speculation he will leave White Hart Lane.

The Spanish striker moved to north London from Valencia ahead of the 2013-14 season, but has struggled to make an impression - contributing just seven league goals.

He has been strongly linked with a move away, with Villarreal reportedly leading the chase for the 30-year-old as they look to strengthen ahead of a return to the Europa League.

However, Pochettino intends to use Soldado as part of his squad for the forthcoming campaign despite Harry Kane playing as a lone striker for much of last season.

"He [Soldado] is our player and in our plans," Pochettino said ahead of the Audi Cup friendly tournament in Munich.

"I can't confirm that [he will be leaving]."

Official: Rafael leaves Manchester United for Lyon

    1734172_heroa.jpg

Brazilian defender Rafael has left Manchester United and joined Lyon after signing a four-year deal with the French outfit.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas revealed earlier on Monday that the 25-year-old had arrived in France in order to finalise a move to Ligue 1, having fallen out of favour under Louis van Gaal and been omitted from United’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Rafael made just 11 appearances under the Dutchman in a frustrating final season, but that has not soured his affection for the Red Devils, as he took to social media to thank both the club and paying special tribute to the role former manager Sir Alex Ferguson played in his development.

“I want to thank Manchester United fans for all the love during those eight years,” he wrote on his Twitter page.

“Since I signed with the club I lived incredible moments, after all were eight years wearing the shirt of one of the biggest clubs of the world.

“Thank you Manchester United. I also want to thank all employees who always treated me with great affection and gave me greater attention.

“Thank you United Kingdom, I learned a lot in this country, as a player, and no doubt as a human being, lessons that I will keep for the rest of my life.

“Thank you Sir Alex Ferguson for always believing in my work and for all the doors that you opened up to me. Now it’s a new path, a new challenge, God bless me!”

:love:Adidas defends 'sexist' Man Utd women's shirt

    1732542_heroa.jpg

Sports giant Adidas has defended the women's version of the new Manchester United home shirt, which has received widespread criticism for its 'sexist' design.

The German sportswear manufacturer recently signed a 10-year deal, worth £750 million, to succeed Nike as United’s kit supplier, but Saturday’s unveiling of the clubs 2015-16 designs was met with conjecture when the female alternative to the main strip was condemned by many on social media for its 'discriminatory' plunging neckline.

But an Adidas spokesperson insisted in a statement that the garment was developed after consultation with supporters, and also cited a local newspaper poll which saw 75 per cent of readers back the design.

"Adidas provides ‎an adult shirt which is a replica of what the players wear," the statement read. "Based on research from fans, we also offer a women's shirt as part of our lifestyle range of products. This range has a slightly different design and fit to give fans a choice.”

While United and Adidas have yet to reveal designs for their away and third-choice strips for the coming season, Old Trafford's East Stand seating has already been reconfigured to include the Adidas logo ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener against Tottenham.

Higuain has turned down new Napoli deal, confirms agent

    gonzalo-higuain-napoli-fiorentina-serie-a-12042015_1q85nw5uf3vsi1ixuxzou1jucn.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain has rejected the offer of a new contract with Napoli, according to the striker's agent.

The Argentina international, who moved to the San Paolo in 2013 from Real Madrid, still has three years to run on his current deal but has been linked with a potential summer transfer nonetheless.

Nicolas Higuain, his brother and representative, has now confirmed they have turned down a one-year extension to his contract, though he says there are no current plans to move away from Napoli."We had a meeting with the president [Aurelio De Laurentiis] in Venice 10 days ago," he told Radio Crc.

"We talked about everything. He offered a one-year contract extension, but in my opinion - and ours - we will continue with the original contract, expiring in 2018.

"The contract isn't that different to the one we signed before, so for us it's not a real offer. We are calm and happy to continue with the current conditions.

"At the moment, we have faith that Gonzalo will stay at Napoli, with a team which is 100 per cent focused and can win something."It seems strange, but the big clubs have not contacted me, nor have I spoken with anyone."

Higuain endured a disappointing summer as two crucial misses - one in the penalty shootout - cost Argentina in the final of the Copa America in Chile. But his brother is confident the forward will be ready to challenge for honours in the coming campaign.

"Gonzalo arrived in Dimaro [for pre-season training] in good condition. He's an introverted player, not some snake oil salesman who likes to show off. You won't see him on Twitter taking pictures all day. I have heard he's training well, and that's what's important.

"Everyone dreams of winning something important, but this year it will be even more difficult because of the way teams have strengthened."It will be a tough campaign, when the first ball is kicked we [Napoli] will try to show our worth."

Ferdinand: Forget Chelsea, Stones should go to Manchester United

    1713132_heroa.jpg

John Stones would be "a lunatic" if he signed for Chelsea and should instead join Manchester United, according to former Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand.

Goal understands Chelsea have had two bids rejected for the Everton defender, with Roberto Martinez claiming the Toffees will not be forced into selling one of their prized assets.

Both United and Manchester City have since been linked with a move for the former Barnsley man as they look to bolster their own defensive ranks.

And Ferdinand, who retired from professional football at the end of last season having won six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 12 seasons at Old Trafford, feels a move to the Red Devils would be most beneficial to his career.

"If he goes to Manchester United he plays every week, so that’s the right club for him, I think," he told reporters. "If he goes to Chelsea, he’s not playing every week.

"He’s at that stage of his development where he wants to play every week. If you say to any young footballer to leave a club to sit on the bench, you’ve got to be a lunatic. You have to be.

"I’d buy John Stones if I’m Man United. You’re buying someone who’s going to give you ten years’ service. He’s a great prospect — the best young centre-half in the country at the moment. It’s a no-brainer for me."

Stones has been compared to Ferdinand due to his confidence in possession and willingness to carry the ball out of defence in a bid to start attacks.

And the former England international admits he is a fan of the 21-year-old and feels he could deal with the pressure of moving for a hefty fee.

"He’s very good on the ball. I took a real interest in him and watched him at Loftus Road against Bobby Zamora, who gave most centre-halves problems last season physically and he handled Bobby well, and that physical element.

"That was one of the areas that I hadn’t really seen him under pressure with and he looked up for that battle. With all the other stuff he’s got, he’s got a real good chance.

"Looking at him as a footballer, technically he plays with a certain amount of maturity, I think he would be ready to go and do that. But he is the better judge of that. I don’t know him personally.

"Huge price tag [so] he is not going to be able to go in under the radar and bed in. He is going to go in, if he signs for Man United, as the number one centre-half; for Chelsea, probably as an understudy for a certain amount of time."

    :cool:Irwin: Depay can match Beckham's free-kick prowess

    1681952_heroa.jpg

Former Manchester United full-back Denis Irwin believes Memphis Depay has the talent to match the free-kick taking ability of David Beckham.

Ex-England captain Beckham forged a reputation as a set-piece expert while at Old Trafford, and even had the film 'Bend it like Beckham' named after him due to his ability to curl the ball with apparent ease.

And Irwin - who played alongside Beckham under Sir Alex Ferguson for the Red Devils and was something of a free-kick master himself - feels Depay can replicate the skills of the former Real Madrid midfielder.

"I think Memphis could match Becks in that sense," he told United's official website.

"I saw him score a few goals last year for PSV and I think he will be a big addition to our team.

"It’s still early days yet, but there’s no doubt that he has a lot of talent.

"He brings that unpredictability and we don’t possess too many players like that.

"His records will tell you that, even though he’s young, he’s a goal scorer as well.

"We’ve already seen how good he is at finishing, so I think he’ll become a big player for us even though he’s young."

Depay is one of five new faces that Louis van Gaal has brought to the club this summer after the arrivals of Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Sergio Romero.

It's a pleasure to face Luis Enrique's Barcelona - Totti

    francesco-totti-luis-enrique-roma-2012_1tmz2h4czo0y71hy5oa5agkxq9.jpg

Francesco Totti says he cannot wait to face old Roma head coach Luis Enrique when the Serie A side take on Barcelona on Wednesday.

The Giallorossi are the invited opposition for the annual Joan Gamper trophy match, which celebrates its 50th year this week. And Totti is relishing the chance to go toe-to-toe with the European champions and their boss, who managed Roma in the 2011-12 season.

"I'm very happy to play against the champions of Europe, it will be a great game," said the veteran forward, speaking via AS's preview video.

"It's very stimulating and a pleasure to play against great players and, above all, a great coach in Luis Enrique."See you soon, coach!"

Totti has always been an outspoken supporter of Luis Enrique, despite the former Spain international enduring a disappointing campaign in charge at the Stadio Olimpico."We have had a great relationship from the beginning. I put myself at his disposal and he counted on me," Totti said in 2012.

"He's a great person. He wants to bring a new mentality, to try new ideas.Although at first I wasn't happy with the position I played, he was right: I enjoyed myself, as did the team and the fans."

Kane can become one of the world's best at Tottenham - Pochettino

    1735002_heroa.jpg

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino believes Harry Kane has what it takes to become one of the world's top strikers and feels the striker is committed to the north London outfit.

    Goal
revealed in June that Manchester United were planning a bid worth £50 million for the forward after he netted 31 goals in all competitions last term.

But Pochettino insists that the player is happy at White Hart Lane and is ready to give his all as Spurs look to break into the Premier League's top four.

"He’s excited to start the season with us," the Argentine coach told reporters. "Any doubts about his commitment are gone.

"He is delighted to stay with Tottenham. He is a big supporter of the club. I think he is very happy and we are very happy he is with us."

Kane is set to come under intense scrutiny this season as he looks to repeat the form that saw him win the PFA Young Player of the Year and emerge as one of the brightest attacking talents in Europe.

And Pochettino feels the 22-year-old can handle the weight of expectation and expects him to help lead his young squad onto better things.

"He can manage this pressure. He is young but he is very mature. He is in a very good way to become one of the best strikers in the world.

"If you can do it in England and Europe, you are doing it in the best competitions in the world.

"I think that we have very ambitious players now, the younger ones in the group, like Harry. We need to keep this mentality. We try to build a very strong group for the next few years to try and achieve important things."
