Manchester City keen to prove doubters wrong, insists Kompany

    vincentkompany-cropped_1g36wnoorwf881ih3iw8a412q8.jpg

Vincent Kompany believes Manchester City have started to answer their critics with the season-opening 3-0 victory over West Brom on Monday.

The City captain netted his side's third at The Hawthorns after Yaya Toure’s double had put the visitors in control before the break.

City's title challenge had been written off by some before the start of the campaign but Kompany insists his side have offered the perfect response.

"I think, for us, we have something to prove," the Belgian told Sky Sports. "Last season was below what we are used to and, if you were to look at the training sessions we did - especially last week - it's a team that has great intent.

"Obviously there are a lot of favourite teams now - we're not part of it I've heard!

"It's something that gives us extra motivation. We came out here today knowing that we had a point to prove."

Asked whether he needed to answer his own critics after a disappointing campaign last term, Kompany added: "More than anyone else, I think. I've worked hard.

"Sometimes you get judged on how you finish a season. Until November I was having a good season, but it didn't matter in the end because we didn't win anything

"I think as a team we all have to improve this season, but for me I just want to get back to my best level and games like today are giving me the confidence.

"I'm extremely hungry for more silverware and extremely hungry for great performances."

Yaya Toure leaves uncertainty in the past to set Man City off to flying start

    yaya-toure-wilfried-bony-manchester-city_3zf0rrhqnaiy1n1dv4hfkqnw8.jpg

On an opening weekend bereft of quality from any of the Premier League title contenders, Manchester City provided the kind of performance potential champions dream of replicating week on week.

Central to that performance, among others, was Yaya Toure.

Manchester United laboured to victory against Tottenham, Chelsea could only draw at home against Swansea City, and Arsenal were handed a reality check by West Ham after a summer of optimism.

Toure, David Silva and Co. meanwhile would not fall victim to the complacency which hampered the rest of the prospective top four against West Brom on Monday night.

Though they eventually rallied to finish second behind Chelsea last season, Manuel Pellegrini’s side were a shadow of their former selves in relinquishing their title. Drab performance followed drab performance, and were it not for Sergio Aguero’s goals they may have struggled to even finish in the top four.

Toure struggled as his future at the club remained in doubt for long periods, while Vincent Kompany provided hints that his time as one of the world’s outstanding defenders was coming to an end. Pellegrini’s own situation did not help matters as the spectre of Pep Guardiola hung over the Etihad Stadium for much of the campaign.

But with Pellegrini having extended his contract until 2017, there is all of a sudden more stability around City despite the deal likely being a smokescreen to shield the Chilean from criticism before Guardiola inevitably arrives in the summer.

This was reflected in their performance against West Brom as they took control early on before picking the Baggies off at will. On a night when £49 million man Raheem Sterling made his competitive debut, it was somewhat symbolic that Toure and Kompany provided the goals.

The pair – along with Sergio Aguero and Silva – were the driving force behind City’s title triumph in 2014, and if Pellegrini's side are to replicate that feat they will need them firing once again. All four will need to be at their best again if Chelsea and the rest are to be toppled come May.

At The Hawthorns, it was Silva who put in the outstanding performance of the night as he showcased why he remains the best player around the edge of the box the Premier League has to offer.

It defies belief that Pellegrini insisted on playing him wide on the left as part of a 4-4-2 system for so long. Clearly more at home as a No.10, the Spaniard now has the chance to stamp his authority on this season as Eden Hazard did the last.

Behind Silva, Toure too was in his more natural role as a roaming central midfielder. Too often he was tied to defensive duties last term, but against West Brom he was given the freedom to get forward thanks to a quietly outstanding performance from Fernandinho alongside him.

Birthday-cake-gate seems to be behind the Ivorian and his second goal – a superb curling effort from 20 yards following neat interplay with compatriot Wilfried Bony – was a sign that his confidence is returning.

Few midfielders in the English top flight possess the talent the Ivorian has, and his physical presence just adds to the task defenders face in stopping him. An in-form Toure can be the difference for City, and Pellegrini is well aware of how key it is he puts his issues from last season behind him.
“I always say that last season was strange for Yaya,” he said. He started the season with a lot of problems after the death of his brother and afterwards problems with his agent. I think that he was not focused on what he wanted to do last year. Now, I am sure we are going to see the same Yaya that we saw two seasons ago.

“I don’t think Yaya deserved the amount of criticism that he received last season. Maybe it was not his best season but he didn’t play as badly as everyone said. He’s an important player for us and I’m sure his head was not it in its best moment."

Toure’s fellow goalscorer Kompany perhaps had an even more chastening time in 2014-15. A string of errors led to the club captain being forced to watch from the bench for the final six matches of the campaign – all of which City won – and many questioned whether fellow Belgium international Jason Denayer should be given the opportunity to step into Kompany’s shoes.

Dealing with the little threat Saido Berahino and Rickie Lambert posed does not give the best indicator that his issues are behind him, but the confidence he showed to head Silva’s second-half corner past Boaz Myhill at his near post suggested a change in fortunes may be on the horizon. This was his first goal since the final game of the 2013-14 season and helped his team to a first victory with him in the XI since the Baggies were beaten by the same scoreline on March 21.
While it was the old guard that impressed most, all eyes prior to kick-off were on Sterling as he returned to Premier League action following his £49m move from Liverpool.

In 70 minutes on the left-hand side the England international showed flashes of the player that many at Anfield admired before his far from acrimonious exit, though he really should have scored as Boaz Myhill saved twice from the winger either side of half-time.

The image of Sterling walking into the stands to hand his shirt to a supporter at full-time smacked of a player desperate to improve his public image, but should he improve on this display many outside of Merseyside will soon forget the whole sorry saga.

Kevin De Bruyne could well join him and Silva in a mouthwatering attacking trio behind the fit-again Aguero after a £46m bid was lodged for the Wolfsburg man, and with the Belgian on board Pellegrini would have a formidable squad able of competing both at home and in Europe.

For now, however, attention turns to the visit of Chelsea on Sunday. An eighth straight Premier League win would leave the Blues already five points clear of their primary title rivals and in pole position – albeit at an early stage – to become the sixth straight team to lift the trophy having begun their campaign on a Monday night.

On this evidence, Mourinho will have to come up with something special to stop them.

Sevilla will wait for Llorente - Castro

    fernando-llorente-juventus-fiorentina-serie-a_zsyc7cmr807v1ftwt9mkhp6ev.jpg

Sevilla president Jose Castro says the club must be patient as they try to lure Fernando Llorente away from Juventus.

The Spanish striker has been linked with a move away from Turin after a disappointing 2014-15 campaign.

The arrivals of Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala mean he is expected to find playing time hard to come by this term and Sevilla have already shown an interest.
However, the club chief insists there is still plenty of time left before the transfer window closes and they are willing to wait to get their man.

"As long as the market is open and there are opportunities to exploit, we will be there," he told Marca. "If Unai Emery asks for some players, we will intervene to try to please him. With Llorente, we must still have patience.

"Just now we prefer to think about the big Uefa Super Cup game against Barcelona."Sevilla are looking to build on last year's Europa League win by beating Champions League holders Barca in Tbilisi on Tuesday.

"Winning the Super Cup would be exceptional," Castro said of the occasion. "I'm sure every player will give the maximum from the first minute to reach the goal.
"Just being here is a great achievement, we'll try to get something more."

Barcelona need crazies like Arda Turan - Dani Alves

    arda-turan-barcelona-preseason_1e7mwgz5p3mov1jc02n0kdt0sa.jpg

Barcelona defender Dani Alves has hailed new signing Arda Turan as the "crazy" kind of player the team needs.

The Turkey international joined Barcelona from La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid on a five-year contract this summer.

Turan was named in Luis Enrique's squad that has travelled to Tbilisi ahead of the Uefa Super Cup clash with Sevilla.

However, the midfielder is ineligible to play until January due to Barca's transfer ban, and Dani Alves says the 28-year-old "phenomenon's" debut cannot come soon enough.

"It's an honour to have Turan with us," the Brazil international said ahead of Tuesday's Uefa Super Cup against Sevilla.

"It's a pity he can't help us now, we are eager for him to play, for his quality, intelligence and personality.

"He's a phenomenon. And more, he's been very funny in the camp. Our team needs crazies like him."

:angry::growl:'Van Gaal is DESTROYING Manchester United'

    pedro-cropped_j1t7q1e2gs8y1p6wnxb5vl4j4.jpg

Hristo Stoichkov has blasted Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal in an attempt to convince Pedro to remain at Barcelona, claiming that the "mediocre" Dutch coach is now "destroying" the Premier League club in the same way he "destroyed" the Catalan outfit.

The Spain international is poised to move to Old Trafford in search of more regular game time, with his first-team opportunities at Camp Nou having been restricted last season by the sensational form of the Blaugrana's front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.

Pedro is expected to link up with Van Gaal in Manchester after the Supercopa de Espana, with Neymar's contraction of the mumps leading to Barcelona asking the 28-year-old to delay his £22.3 million transfer in order to provide cover the double header with Athletic Bilbao.

However, Bulgarian icon Stoichkov, a five-time La Liga winner and European Cup champion with Barca who fell out out with Van Gaal in 1998, says that Pedro need only look at the way in which former Blaugrana goalkeeper Victor Valdes has been ostracised at Old Trafford to understand how perilous playing under the Dutchman can be.

"I would never be under the orders of Van Gaal," the 49-year-old told Spanish radio Onda Cero. "He's mediocre.

"He destroyed Barca and is destroying Manchester United.

"With what he has done to [Victor] Valdes he has shown he is a bad person. Hopefully Pedro listens to me and doesn't leave."

This is not the first time Stoichkov has taken aim at Van Gaal as he blames the ex-Barca boss for his Camp Nou exit 17 years ago, branding his former boss as "scum" in an interview with French newspaper L'Equipe in March.

"I have no respect for him," Stoichkov added.

"One day, when I was injured, I was with my wife at Camp Nou and Van Gaal went up to her.

"He asked her how it was possible that she married someone like me. She responded that I was a Ballon d'Or winner.

"My departure in 1998 was the fault of Van Gaal, for sure."

Milner: If Liverpool win but play ugly, we don't care

    milnercoutinho-cropped_mb6bjfv4ar9b14tnrk853y4xr.jpg

Liverpool midfielder James Milner is happy for his team to continue winning ugly after an unconvincing start to the season.

Brendan Rodgers's men needed a stunning 86th-minute long-range strike from Philippe Coutinho to start their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win at Stoke City on Sunday.

It was far from their most fluent display, but summer signing Milner said being able to leave the Britannia Stadium with three points was all that mattered despite a lacklustre display from most involved.

"It is always about the results. If we played rubbish every game of the season and won every one of them then everybody would be happy with that," he said.

"Ultimately it is about getting that win whether it is a game where we can move the ball about or whether it is a game where it is a battle and we have to grind it out.

"You have to assess the situation and be able to adapt to those games and play in all these different formations and against different sides.

"A top team can adapt and win the games when things maybe aren't playing to your strengths."

Milner, who was on the wrong end of one of Coutinho's long-range strikes when Manchester City lost 2-1 at Anfield in March, was full of praise for the Brazilian following another memorable winner.

"I think he is going to keep improving all the time. I saw him do that a few times last year, so it was nice to have him do that while I was on the field and on his side," Milner said.

"He has got that quality and we know we have quality all over the field."

De Guzman close to leaving Napoli for Marseille, says agent

    jonathandeguzman-cropped_23ufq9inar4f1tusxz9hyc1tu.jpg

Jonathan de Guzman's agent has revealed that his client is poised to leave Napoli for Marseille.

The 27-year-old midfielder was still being linked with a move to the Stade Velodrome despite the shock resignation of coach Marcelo Bielsa over the weekend and there were some reports that suggested the Ligue 1 outfit could complete the deal for the Netherlands international as soon as Wednesday.

De Guzman's representative, Fabio Parisi, has now confirmed that while the transfer has not yet been finalised, an agreement is close.

"Unless something has happened in the last 30 minutes, I wouldn't say that everything is defined," the agent told CalcioNapoli24.

"However, it's true, we're negotiating with Marseille and he'll leave Napoli on a permanent basis. [Marseille president Vincent] Labrune wants him regardless of who is the new coach.

"The French club are not the only ones interested in the player.

"How much will he cost? Napoli will make a loss of a few million compared to when he arrived."

De Guzman joined Napoli from Villarreal last summer for an estimated €6m fee, after spending the two previous seasons on loan at Swansea.

Toure & Silva 'to have arm wrestle' over Man City goal

    1766752_heroa.jpg

Yaya Toure and David Silva have chosen a novel way to decide who scored Manchester City's first goal of the new Premier League campaign.

Last season's runners-up comfortably beat West Brom 3-0 at the Hawthorns on Monday night, with the Ivorian credited with the opening two goals before captain Vincent Kompany wrapped up the win by the hour mark.

Toure's first, however, was a side-footed effort from the edge of the area that appeared to take a purposeful deflection off Silva before spinning through Craig Dawson's legs and past Boaz Myhill.

Toure's second 15 minutes later was far more conclusive, with the 32-year-old curling a first-time shot into the top corner from the edge of the area, while Kompany headed home to round off a commanding display.

Martinez slams 'very, very unfair' transfer window amid Chelsea's pursuit of Stones

    martinez_pv5zsgw4blow1uj1kvzlgevje.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez described the transfer window as "very unfair" as Chelsea's interest in John Stones persists.

The 21-year-old has been a key target for the Premier League champions throughout the summer, with previous bids of £20 million and £26m rejected, and are confident of closing in on a £30m deal this week.

Martinez is unhappy that the window is still open when the season has started, with transfers possible for English clubs until September 1, following Everton's 2-2 draw with newly promoted Watford on Saturday.

"The window, when it is open and we have to prepare for official games, is very, very unfair. I don't think it is right," he told Sky Sports.

"I think we should have a period where we assemble our squad, and then once the first league game starts everyone is focused.

"I think we forget that footballers have a human side and it can really affect. Players like Stones and [Ross] Barkley have an incredible future and will attract interest from the outside."

The nature of Chelsea's pursuit for Stones has caused some friction between the two clubs, as well as Jose Mourinho and Martinez, with the Portuguese going public with his interest in July.

    Klopp turns down Marseille

    jurgen-klopp-borussia-dortmund-vfl-wolfsburg-dfb-pokal-30052015_qeof6fm36tdf1egs5639aorvs.jpg

Jurgen Klopp's agent has revealed that the former Borussia Dortmund coach has turned down the chance to become Marseille's new head coach.

The French outfit are looking for a new boss following the shock resignation of Marcelo Bielsa afer their Ligue 1 opener at the weekend and they had earmarked Klopp as the ideal replacement.

However, the 48-year-old, who parted company with Dortmund at the end of last season, is not interested in returning to coaching just yet.

"It is correct that Klopp has rejected Marseille," Klopp's representative, Marc Kosicke, told Bild.

"OM were really interested in signing him, but the time is not right yet for Jurgen to return to coaching."

Klopp spent seven years in charge at Signal Iduna Park, winning two Bundesliga titles and one DFB Pokal, as well as leading Dortmund to the 2012-13 Champions League final, which they lost to Bayern Munich.

The German's decision to reject OM's offer means the Ligue 1 outfit will have to turn their attention elsewhere, with Zinedine Zidane and Eric Gerets also believed to be in the frame for the job.

Ronaldo & Ramos to return to Real Madrid training

    sergioramoscristianoronaldo-cropped_115h8cqr41spq153rpgp9ohhhi.jpg

Real Madrid duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos are expected to return to full training on Tuesday, after recovering from minor injury problems.

Ramos - who is yet to sign a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu following interest from Manchester United - missed Sunday's friendly at Valerenga due to a knock he suffered against Bayern Munich in last week's Audi Cup.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, picked up a back problem prior to the pre-season tournament in Germany, thus ruling him out of the subsequent trip to Norway.

However, neither player was viewed as a doubt for the start of Real's domestic campaign against Sporting Gijon on August 23 and both are now set to join up with their team-mates for training on Tuesday having worked on their fitness at Ciudad Real Madrid.

The pair could now feature in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy against Galatasaray next Tuesday.

Stoke can reach Europa League with Afellay & Shaqiri, says Adam

    ibrahim-afellay-stoke-city_sl21g2ilfadw102g4wbgsx354.jpg

Stoke City can make a genuine bid for European qualification with the likes of new signing Ibrahim Afellay and the imminent arrival of Xherdan Shaqiri , according to Charlie Adam .

The Potters lost their opening game of the season 1-0 to Liverpool - described by Adam as "only one game" - which saw debuts for Afellay, Glen Johnson and loanee Marco van Ginkel.

But Adam remains excited about the potential of the squad, with the expected club-record arrival of Shaqiri set to be Mark Hughes's 10th signing since last season, and feels Europa League qualification is achievable.

"The ambition is to try to get into Europe," Adam told reporters.

"That would be a massive achievement. Liverpool was only one game, there are 37 more to go. We want to get into Europe, we want to taste it and that would be a step forward for us."

Since being promoted to the Premier League in 2008-09, Stoke have never finished higher than ninth - their result in the last two campaigns - but Adam said Hughes has developed "a great project".

"You can see the ability [Afellay] has," Adam said. "You don't play for Barcelona if you're a bad player. He likes to keep the ball and has good retention of it.

"Also, he has only been in the club a couple of weeks and not had much of a pre-season. Once he gets up to speed again and everybody gets to know how each other play we will be a decent team again this year."

    Romagnoli undergoes Milan medical

    alessio-romagnoli-roma_1dnwui0bndnfz1qrh8xg9bqbly.jpg

AC Milan have confirmed that Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli will undergo a medical on Tuesday morning before completing his proposed move to the Giuseppe Meazza.

Both sides held talks to discuss the transfer of the centre-back on Sunday evening and Rossoneri CEO Adriano Galliani said after the meeting that the deal was "99.8 per cent" done.

The finer details of the transfer have now been ironed out and the 20-year-old centre-half is now set to seal his switch to San Siro.

"Italy U-21 and Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli is scheduled to have a medical from this morning," a statement on the Milan website reads.

"Roma and Milan were in talks over the transfer of the centre-back on Sunday evening at Forte dei Marmi."

Romagnoli is a product of the Roma youth academy and made his official first-team debut for the Giallorossi in 2012-13.

However, after failing to secure regular first-team action in the Italian capital, he spent last season on loan to Sampdoria, where he excelled under former boss Sinisa Mihajlovic, who is now in charge of Milan.

The Rossoneri will pay an initial fee of €25 million for Romagnoli, which could rise to €30m depending on performance-related bonuses.

'Pellegrini renewal means Guardiola not leaving Bayern for Man City' - Sammer

    pep-guardiola_1r45k44uimcek1o3zwe95egi5b.jpg

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer believes Manuel Pellegrini's contract renewal with Manchester City means Pep Guardiola is unlikely to leave the Bundesliga champions for the Premier League outfit.

Guardiola's contract is due to expire at the end of the 2015-16 campaign and he has so far been reluctant to enter talks over a new deal, fuelling speculation that this could be his final season at the Allianz Arena.

Goal understands that Guardiola still remains on City's radar, with the club having previously been keen to lure him to the Etihad Stadium, despite Pellegrini having recently signed a contract extension to take him through to 2017.

Sammer is thus amused that those claiming that the Catalan coach is bound for Eastlands next summer have seemingly been proven wrong.

"I get the impression that people are trying to outdo each other with the speculation about Pep's future," the former Germany international told Sky.

"There have been so many rumours over the past few weeks.

"But I guess Pellegrini's renewal with City is bad news for those who said Pep would move there in 2016...

"I can only say that we are not taking all the rumours and speculation too seriously. But that does not mean we are underestimating the situation."

Kimmich: I was sad to see Schweinsteiger leave Bayern

    joshua-kimmich-germany-ec-under-21-23062015_pdg7dbu989sm1xyvawvtd3evh.jpg

Bayern Munich youngster Joshua Kimmich has admitted that Bastian Schweinsteiger's decision to leave the club for Manchester United came as a bit of a blow to him as he was keen to learn from the experienced midfielder.

Kimmich joined the Bundesliga champions from Stuttgart after impressing with RB Leipzig and was keen to team up with the Germany international at the Allianz Arena.

However, Schweinsteiger eventually opted to move on and join United instead, much to the disappointment of Kimmich.

"I am a bit sad that Schweinsteiger has left the club. I could have learned a lot from him," the 20-year-old told AZ.

"He has won the Champions League and the World Cup. Basti has always been an idol to me. I would have loved to play alongside him.

"It would be amazing if I could play with him for the national team. Everybody dreams of playing for Germany."

The young midfielder also had his say on the signing of Arturo Vidal from Juventus and believes the Chile international's arrival will not affect his chances of becoming a regular.

"Arturo fits in really well at Bayern. He is the type of player we did not have yet. But his arrival has not changed anything for me.

"I want to learn as much as possible and then try to reach the same level as players like him."

Romagnoli: Milan the BIGGEST club in the world

    alessioromagnoli-cropped_bbpvr6o55onf16ih0ufx9hnoo.jpg

Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli feels AC Milan are the biggest and most successful club in the world and is keen to be reunited with Sinisa Mihajlovic at San Siro.

The 20-year-old spent last season on loan at Sampdoria, making 28 Serie A starts as Mihajlovic's former club finished in seventh place.

Romagnoli's impressive displays at the heart of the Sampdoria defence impressed the Serbian coach, who is poised to make the youngster his latest new signing in a new-look Rossoneri side.

Romagnoli is set for a medical at Milan on Tuesday and he is looking forward to a new challenge.

"It is all very exciting for me. I am at the biggest and most successful club in the world," Romagnoli told the club's official website.

"Now it is down to me to do well. I am really overwhelmed by the comparisons with a great player like [Alessandro] Nesta, but to become like him a lot of work is needed.

"[Sinisa] Mihajlovic told me that if he were given the chance, he would bring me here. I want to give the squad a hand and I will try and give my best and all that I have.

"The press say Milan are poor, but even in defence there is lots of quality at Milan and as far as I am concerned I simply want to give my all.

"I had a good relationship with [Rudi] Garcia and he said that he wanted to keep me, but then for lots of reasons the club made the decision to sell me and I wanted Milan."

I'm difficult to live with but Guardiola had skills to manage me, says Valdes

Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes admits he is a "very difficult person to live with" yet claims former manager Pep Guardiola had the man-management skills to match him.

The 33-year-old’s attitude was criticised by Louis van Gaal in July, stating he had excluded him from their pre-season tour of the United States after refusing to play in the club’s Under-21 fixtures.

Valdes hit back at his manager on Twitter by posting a picture of the Under-21 fixtures he played in yet, speaking a month before the incident, he praised Guardiola for his approach to players and their "egos".

"I am a very difficult person to work and live with. My wife deserves the biggest of trophies," he told Colombian news station RCN in an interview which aired last week.

"I was very lucky to have so many seasons with [Guardiola].

"In addition to being a teacher to many of us, he was always able to communicate greatly with everyone and knowing how to adapt to talk to different people in the dressing room.

"That’s the most challenging thing for a coach, to adapt their own pride to be able to speak to everyone with their different egos."

Valdes, who spent four years at the Liga outfit under Guardiola, left them in acrimonious circumstances when his contract ended and a torn anterior cruciate ligament left him without a club the following season.

And he admits his exit was not as he would have hoped for.

He said: "I recriminate myself when I keep myself in the margins and let people down, especially those who expect better from me.

"The day when I left Barca, because of the treatment I was receiving and my character, it didn’t go as I would have wished. I drifted and then just left, I’m sure people expected much more from me."
