Di Maria: I'll learn a lot from Ibrahimovic and PSG's stars

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-edinson-cavani-psg-paris-saint-germain-29112014_72jrrwmgqdwn1687nwzi7bcxt.jpg

Angel Di Maria says he is relishing the chance to learn from new Paris Saint-Germain team-mates Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani. The Argentine sealed his long-awaited switch to the Ligue 1 champions from Manchester United last week for a fee understood to total €63 million.

And the former Real Madrid midfielder cannot wait to experience life alongside the star names within Laurent Blanc's treble-winning squad.

"I'm learning every day," he told PSG's official website. "With the quality of players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marco Verratti, Thiago Silva, Edinson Cavani and all the others, I believe I will learn a lot.

"I'll continue growing. I'm still young. A player learns until the end of his career, season after season.

"During my career, I've always tried to adapt my game to great players around me. Here, they are truly great. The most important thing for me is to try to understand how my team-mates play."Di Maria admits it could be a challenge to adapt to life in France's top flight but he is determined to deliver the trophies - and Classique victories - that the fans crave.

"Ligue 1 is a championship of a very high level, with very good players. I'll try to adapt as quickly as possible even though I know it won't be easy.

"I know the match against Marseille is very important. I'll do my best for the fans to make them happy and so we can win these matches."For the fans, I know it's important to win the title, but these games, too."

Immobile unhappy with Borussia Dortmund treatment

    ciro-immobile-jurgen-klopp-borussia-dortmund_fegam7ggviye1tgjxsj6mdqfo.jpg

Sevilla striker Ciro Immobile has accused former club Borussia Dortmund of a lack of support during a difficult year in Germany.

Immobile joined Dortmund for €19 million last year after ending the 2013-14 campaign as Serie A's top scorer with 22 goals. He failed to adapt to life in the Bundesliga, however, and moved to Sevilla on a year-long loan in July.

The 25-year-old is in the Sevilla squad for Tuesday's Super Cup clash with Barcelona as he looks to put his Dortmund disappointment behind him - a spell he claims was exacerbated by a lack of help from those at the club.

He told El Pais : "[We received] no help, neither me nor my family."We must share the blame. I did not know German and I expected more help from my team-mates. But hey, you cannot expect to change the culture of a country.

You feel bad if you're not used to a certain lifestyle. And German is an impossible language to learn."Immobile was also surprised by then Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp's approach, adding: "There was little on tactics, little on gym work.

"We worked hard in pre-season but not very much on weekdays. Everything was geared towards endurance.

"He [Klopp] did a lot on motivation to get the best out of his players. But at a tactical level we did not work hard. He's a good coach though, you do not get to a Champions League final by chance. Last season was difficult, we came across many difficulties and the team was not right."Double Europa League winners Sevilla will hope Immobile can plug the gap left by last season's top scorer Carlos Bacca's move to Milan.

"[Sevilla's sporting director] Monchi told me that I am very different from Bacca," Immobile added."He helped the team a lot, but mostly as a finisher. I like to be in the area but also get out and shoot from distance. I like to get wide and attack space.

"Two straight wins in the Europa League... is not achieved by a striker who will score 50 goals or a defence that does not concede many, this is achieved with a united team. And when I got here I realised how close they are."

    AC Milan confirm Romagnoli signing

    alessio-romagnoli-roma_1dnwui0bndnfz1qrh8xg9bqbly.jpg

AC Milan have announced the signing of Alessio Romagnoli on a five-year deal from Roma. The 20-year-old, who described the Rossoneri as the world's biggest club, arrived for a medical in Milan earlier on Tuesday.

And the rising defensive star has now completed his switch to San Siro, where he will reunite with coach Sinisa Mihajlovic, under whom he worked while on loan at Sampdoria last season.

Confirming the news via a welcome note on their official website, Milan said: "Welcome Alessio, you've signed with us until June 2020 and we're very happy about it.

"You're a young man, you're 20, and because of that we believe you have all the time in the world to become an icon of our club, following the path of the great Rossoneri defenders. A big hug from AC Milan, and forza Alessio."

Romagnoli made a total of 31 appearances in 2014-15, scoring twice.

Fellow summer signing Andrea Bertolacci had earlier spoken of his eagerness to see his old Giallorossi team-mate don the famous black and red jersey."Mihajlovic knows him well," he told Milan Channel.

"If he wanted him so much it’s because he knows he will be very useful. We will do everything to help him integrate as soon as possible."I know him from our time at Roma, he is a great signing."

The Italy Under-21 international is believed to have cost close to €30 million after Milan's €25m offer had previously been rejected.

Chelsea's Courtois red card appeal unsuccessful

    1762572_heroa.jpg

The Football Association have rejected Chelsea's appeal against the red card awarded to Thibaut Courtois during their 2-2 draw with Swansea City on Saturday.

The goalkeeper was given his marching orders by Michael Oliver having tripped Bafetimbi Gomis as he ran through on goal, and the Blues were hopeful the decision would be overturned.

But the FA felt there was not sufficient evidence to support their claim and the Belgium international will now miss Sunday's clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

A statement from the FA read: "A claim of wrongful dismissal submitted by Chelsea in relation to Thibaut Courtois has been unsuccessful following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing earlier today.

"The goalkeeper was dismissed for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity in the 52nd minute of Chelsea's game against Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (8 August 2015).

"Therefore, the player's one-match suspension, which is the standard penalty for this offence, remains with immediate effect.

"For a club to be successful with a claim of wrongful dismissal, it must prove to an Independent Regulatory Commission via written and/or video evidence that the match referee made an obvious error."

Asmir Begovic, who signed for the club this summer from Stoke City, will be in line to make his first start for the Blues in Sunday's visit to the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal defender Bellerin in contention for return against Crystal Palace

    1758172_heroa.jpg

Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin is set to return to training at the end of this week and could be in contention to play against Crystal Palace on Sunday, Goal understands.

Bellerin, 20, missed the Gunners 2-0 defeat to West Ham on Sunday after picking up a slight muscle strain in training last week.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed that Bellerin had only suffered a minor problem and it would be a “question of days” before the Spaniard returned to full training.

Bellerin is expected to train again with the full squad on Thursday and could be play in this weekend's trip to Selhurst Park, although the north Londoners’ home clash with Liverpool on August 24 is a more realistic target.

Bellerin established himself as Arsenal’s first choice right-back last season and will hope to return straight to the starting XI after being replaced by Mathieu Debuchy for the Premier League opener against Slaven Bilic's side.

Pedro has asked to leave, confirms Barcelona's technical secretary

    1681822_heroa.jpg

Barcelona's technical secretary Robert Fernandez has confirmed that Pedro has asked to leave the club but insists offers under €30 million (£21.3m) will be rejected.

Goal reported last week that Manchester United had reached an agreement to sign Pedro from the Catalan giants, but Neymar's untimely contraction of the mumps threw up an obstacle to the deal.

The 28-year-old was omitted from Barcelona's starting XI to take on Sevilla in the Uefa Super Cup and, explaining the decision, Fernandez revealed the player has made his wishes known.

"Pedro asked us for the transfer,” Fernandez confirmed, before adding: “We are not going to accept less than €30 million [his buyout clause] for him, it’s not negotiable.”

Winner of five Spanish league titles and three Champions League crowns, Pedro is one of the most decorated footballers of his generation but has rarely been a regular starter at Barcelona.

Van Gaal 'doesn't trust' United target Cillessen - Schmeichel

    vangaalcillessen-cropped_1gyixq2uk18s41s60hmzeh7dnv.jpg

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has called on the club to end their reported chase of Ajax keeper Jasper Cillessen.

Speculation continues to mount that current number one David de Gea will move to Real Madrid, after Louis van Gaal left the Spaniard out of the squad for Saturday's Premier League opener against Tottenham.

Should De Gea depart, Cillessen is reported to be Van Gaal's top choice to replace him.

However, Schmeichel does not believe Van Gaal fully trusts his compatriot after replacing him with Tim Krul for Netherlands' penalty-shootout win against Costa Rica in the World Cup quarter-finals last year.

"Cillessen is a good goalkeeper, but [Van Gaal] took him off for the penalty shootout at the World Cup and that shows some kind of no trust," he told talkSPORT.

"I think he doesn't trust him 100 per cent and I wouldn't like a goalkeeper like that at Manchester United.

"If De Gea goes I would love [Tottenham keeper Hugo] Lloris to come to Manchester United. He has exactly the style of play and he is proven in the Premier League."

Schmeichel also expressed his disappointment that the saga over De Gea's potential move to Real has been allowed to go on into the new campaign.

He said: "If the player is not happy; his agent, himself and the club that want him should have sorted this a long time ago. It's sad that it's dragged into the season.

"I'd really like De Gea to stay. Two years running he's been player of the year. You don't let players like that go but if he wants to go, let him go and let Manchester United move on."

Official: Shaqiri completes Stoke City move

    1769282_heroa.jpg

Stoke City have completed the signing of Inter's Xherdan Shaqiri for a club-record £12 million.

The Switzerland international has penned a five-year deal with the Potters to become their ninth summer signing and will link up with his new teammates ahead of Saturday's visit to Tottenham.

A deal to sign Shaqiri was thought to have broken down in July but manager Mark Hughes revealed talks had reignited on Sunday when he was in attendance at the Britannia Stadium during defeat to Liverpool.

Hughes stated he is now excited to see him integrate into the Premier League.

He told the club's official website: “He’s a dynamic and explosive player who will bring something different to the group and at the age of 23 he still has a great deal of potential.

“In the chats I’ve had with him it’s obvious that he’s excited about playing in the Premier League and showing what he’s capable of.”

The 23-year-old won the Bundesliga twice and the Champions League once with Bayern Munich before joining Inter Milan in January, and will now take up the No. 22 shirt for his new club this season.

:love:De Gea named in Manchester United's Champions League squad for play-off stage

    1677382_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have named David De Gea in their Champions League squad for this month's play-off against Club Brugge.

De Gea was omitted from the United squad to face Tottenham on the opening day of the Premier League by boss Louis van Gaal, who suggested the Spain international was not focused enough to feature amid a prolonged stand-off with Real Madrid over a summer transfer.

But this has not prevented Van Gaal from including his star goalkeeper in his plans for the two-legged tussle with the Belgian giants, sparking fresh optimism around Old Trafford that De Gea could yet stay in Manchester.

De Gea is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and has already told United that he wants to join Madrid, but the two clubs are yet to agree a fee and Van Gaal is determined not to let one of his best players leave easily.

    MANCHESTER UNITED SQUAD IN FULL

Goalkeepers: David De Gea, Anders Lindegaard, Sergio Romero, Sam Johnstone

Defenders: Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Paddy McNair, Matteo Darmian, Tyler Blackett

Midfielders: Adnan Januzaj, Michael Carrick, Daley Blind, Ashley Young, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Memphis Depay, Juan Mata

Strikers: Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, James Wilson.

Barcelona 5-4 Sevilla (AET): Late Pedro goal the difference in nine goal thriller

    1769712_heroa.jpg

Wantaway forward Pedro proved the hero as his extra-time goal secured the Uefa Super Cup for Barcelona with an enthralling 5-4 victory over Sevilla in Tblisi.

It was confirmed by sporting director Robert Fernandez earlier on Tuesday that Pedro, who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, has told Barca that he wants to leave.

And in what could be his final appearance for the club, the Spain international came off the bench and turned home the rebound from Lionel Messi's shot in the 115th-minute to seal a dramatic win after Barca had surrendered a 4-1 lead.

A pair of sensational Messi free-kicks in the first half cancelled out a similarly superb effort from Ever Banega to put Barca 2-1 up, before Rafinha added a third on the stroke of half-time.

    i

Treble winners Barca were in cruise control when Luis Suarez got on the scoresheet in the 52nd minute, but they were left reeling as Jose Antonio Reyes' strike and Kevin Gameiro's penalty brought Sevilla back into it, before Ciro Immobile set up fellow close-season signing Yevhen Konoplyanka for a scarcely believable equaliser.

Unai Emery's Sevilla were cruelly denied, though, as Pedro earned Barca the first of what could be six trophies this season.

Underdogs Sevilla made a great start when Banega curled a superb 25-yard free-kick into the top left-hand corner in the third minute.Messi would not be outshone by his Argentina team-mate, though, and he levelled with a free-kick of his own - a wonderful dinked effort that left Beto no chance.

The fast pace continued in the 15th minute as Messi outdid himself with another stunning free-kick, this time bending a 30-yard effort from the centre of goal into Beto’s right-hand corner.

Suarez had a goal ruled out for offside, but the lead was two at the break as the Uruguayan squared brilliantly for Rafinha to stab home.

Barca extended their lead seven minutes after the break. Benoit Tremoulinas' sloppy pass was picked off by Sergio Busquets and he in turn rolled a pass to Suarez, who swept home a first-time shot. But Sevilla started an unlikely comeback in the 57th minute when Reyes side-footed home Vitolo's cross from the left.

Rafinha saw a header rebound off the crossbar for Barca, before there was another twist when Jeremy Mathieu tugged Vitolo to ground prompting referee Willie Collum to point to the spot.

Gameiro confidently dispatched the spot-kick low into the left-hand corner, and amazingly Sevilla were level in the 81st minute when Immobile's low centre from the right was tapped home by fellow new boy Konoplyanka. That brought extra-time and the match was seemingly heading for penalties until drama unfolded five minutes from time.

Messi saw another goalbound free-kick blocked by the wall, before his driven shot from the rebound was saved by Beto. However, substitute Pedro reacted quickest to force home the follow-up.

The game almost had one last twist in injury time as Immobile crossed for Adil Rami but, with the goal gaping the ball cannoned off the France defender’s knee and went agonisingly wide of the left post.

Official: Valbuena completes €5 million Lyon move

    mathieu-valbuena-lyon-11082015_1d0x6txyzjwng1kus1repes0b6.jpg

Mathieu Valbuena says the lure of playing Champions League football and making France's squad for Euro 2016 were the key reasons for his move to Lyon.

The diminutive winger moves to the Stade de Gerland on a three-year-deal for a €5 million fee from Dinamo Moscow, bringing an end to his 12-month stay in Russia.

Valbuena is now setting his sights on winning major honours with the Ligue 1 side, as well as representing his country on home soil at the European Championship next year.

"I like the project here at Lyon, I don't regret my first year at Dinamo," he said."It is true that it was a football aim, with Lyon offering Champions League football, that made an impact on my decision. I am super happy to join them. In a career it is important to win titles. I will bring my experience with humility.

"I hope that we will spend some great times as a team here, I come here with a lot of personal aims. This was the most concrete offer. Lyon have a very good team, with great young talents, which played a role.

"I played in the Champions League with Marseille, Lyon can offer that to me now too. Also, Euro 2016 is very important for me. The French national team, that's my motivation."

Valbuena previously spent eight years with Marseille, with whom he won the Ligue 1 title and three Coupe de la Ligue crowns.

The 30-year-old does not believe joining one of their main domestic rivals will cause an issue, though."We know very well that there is rivalry between Marseille and Lyon. That's football," he added.

"What I had at Marseille was extraordinary. Nobody can take that away from me. I have always been a professional. I have never hurt anyone. I know that in football things change. I have no regrets joining Lyon, the opposite.

"This was also a family choice. I didn't hesitate. It is true that I played for Marseille for eight years. Just because I played for Marseille doesn't mean I can't play elsewhere."
