Pedro will be a success at Manchester United, says Fernando Torres

    1774672_heroa.jpg

Fernando Torres has backed Pedro to be a success in the Premier League.

Goal understands that Manchester United and Barcelona have agreed an initial £18.1 million (€26m) fee, with a further £4.2m (€6m) in bonuses, for the 28-year-old forward.

Pedro netted a late winner for Barcelona in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday evening and admitted after the match that he remains in “a difficult situation”.

Torres, who spent nearly seven years in the Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea, insists Pedro has the ability and mentality to perform in England and understands his fellow Spaniard’s desire to seek more playing time.

“He is a good friend, and if he decides that England is the next step in his career, I am sure he will do very well there,” Torres told the Daily Mirror.

“He has all the ability you would expect from a player who has been at Barcelona for so many years, but also he has a great work ethic.

"He works hard, he will help defend, he won’t be bullied, he has everything to succeed in the Premier League.

“I think he will find it very hard to leave Barcelona, but I understand as much as anybody how important it is to be playing regularly — especially once you reach a certain age. You need to be at a club where you are playing a lot of football.”

Roma recruit Dzeko: I'll always be a City fan

    edindzeko-cropped_1fnmprqdbm1db1p6yadq76smpm.jpg

Edin Dzeko said he will always be a Manchester City fan after joining Roma on a season-long loan deal.

Dzeko's long-awaited transfer to Roma was completed on Wednesday, with the Bosnian moving to the Italian capital on a temporary basis until June with a view to a permanent switch.

The 29-year-old, who found playing opportunities hard to come by last season having made just 11 Premier League starts, was a key member in City's two title-winning teams in 2011-12 and 2013-14.And Dzeko thanked the club for their support since arriving from Wolfsburg in January 2011.

"After four-and-a-half years, filled with your chants for me and my love for you, the time has come to say goodbye," he said. "I have spent some of the best moments of my career at Manchester City, moments that I will never forget.

"Five trophies and many more wins over our biggest rivals, as well as the joy on your faces are all the things a person can never forget."Thanks you for everything. Thank you to all the people in the club who have always been there for me.

"I owe a special thank you to my team-mates and staff who have become like family to me in these years - which is precisely how I saw Manchester City - as one big family."And as you know, saying goodbye to close ones is always the hardest.

"Yes, it is time to say goodbye and face new challenges. I am moving forward to a new country, to another great club with amazing fans. But the time spent with you, as well as the happiness and love I have felt there will always stay with me.

"I will continue to be a big fan of Manchester City, to whom I wish all the best and many more trophies and happiness in the future."

'Mourinho should apologise to Chelsea doctor Carneiro'

    jose-mourinho-eva-carneiro-jon-fearn-chelsea_1elzxhwk456341v8ss66qktxmj.jpg

Jose Mourinho should apologise to Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro for publicly humiliating her without justification, according to Liverpool's former head of medicine.

Carneiro is widely reported to have had her responsibilities as the Blues' first-team doctor significantly reduced after drawing the ire of Mourinho for rushing onto the pitch with physio Jon Fearn to treat Eden Hazard in the closing stages of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Swansea City.

Hazard was required to leave the field after being treated, meaning Chelsea had to play the ensuing seconds with only eight outfield players following an earlier red card shown to Thibaut Courtois.

After the match Mourinho branded his medical staff "impulsive and naive" and suggested they did not "understand the game". Carneiro was then reportedly told her first-team duties would be severely diminished after posting a message on Facebook thanking the public for their support.

Peter Brukner, Liverpool's former head of sports medicine and sports science and the current Australia cricket team doctor, believes Mourinho's conduct has been disrespectful and without cause.

"It's got nothing to do with the manager," Brukner told BBC Radio 5live when asked about the fallout from the Hazard incident. "You don't have doctors telling a manager to play someone up front or play 4-3-3.

"The doctor was 100% correct and the manager, in my opinion, was 100% wrong. He should apologise and the club should ensure that the doctor and physio are not demoted as a result of this.

"She has been publicly humiliated in front of the biggest audience there is and she had not done the wrong thing."

Milan's transfer window is over - Galliani

    adriano-galliani-milan_ha49hcp5hm011h9gwgclge1a3.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani claims the club will do no further business in the transfer market this summer, though once again left the door ajar for Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Rossoneri have enjoyed a productive rebuilding process since the end of last season, with a host of high-profile names arriving at San Siro.

Milan signed Carlos Bacca from Sevilla, Luiz Adriano from Shakhtar Donetsk, while Andrea Bertolacci and Alessio Romagnoli joined from Serie A rivals Roma.

One player who has been persistently linked with a return to the club is Paris Saint-Germain's Ibrahimovic, but any move for the former Milan striker appears to be extremely unlikely."I think that our transfer market ends here, even though interesting options can always occur," Galliani said on Wednesday.

"We don't need a midfielder or more options in any other position, we're well covered in all areas."I don't think PSG will let Ibra leave, but if they do then we will try to sign him."

Milan sacked Filippo Inzaghi as coach in June after finishing 10th in Serie A and replaced him with ex-Inter defender Sinisa Mihajlovic, who had guided Sampdoria to seventh in 2014-15.

Schneiderlin on Man Utd move: All my life I have been working for this to happen

    morganschneiderlin-cropped_199zxkc8a0sso1n9a5absnyl6k.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin insists he can deal with the pressure and expectations of playing for the Premier League giants.

The 25-year-old made his competitive debut for United in Saturday's 1-0 win over Tottenham to open the league season following a £25 million summer arrival from Southampton.

The move marked quite a rise for Schneiderlin, who played in League One, the Championship and top flight for Southampton and is now expected to make his Champions League debut on August 18.

"All my life, I have been working for this moment to happen," he told reporters. "I could have gone before, but I was not physically ready when I was younger. But now, at 25 and with all the experience I have behind me, it's a good step for me.

"Of course, it's different here and you play with more fans, but after that, it’s a football game. Of course there is more expectation on you, more focus on your performance, but that doesn’t scare me.

"I know that I'm playing with good players, that I'm at a good club with a good structure. I can't wait to show what I can do."

Schneiderlin said playing outside the top flight helped him improve as a player, having suffered relegation to the third tier before two promotions with Southampton saw him reach the Premier League.

"Southampton toughened me up, physically and mentally," Schneiderlin said. "When I came to England the target was to play in the Premier League and to get back into the Premier League the next year when I was 18.

"Going into League One could have made me sad or worried about my future. But I was strong mentally and I was surrounded by good people who made me understand how I have to get better, which part of my physicality I have to improve.

"I'm really grateful for that. I worked really hard on my fitness and the way I understand the game. Playing in League One against strong physical players can only help."

'Phenomenal' De Bruyne would make Manchester City stronger - Kompany

    hdp-kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg_woxagkh46ino1mo6mbz5riq6a.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne is a "phenomenal player" who would make Manchester City or any other team in the world stronger, according to countryman Vincent Kompany.

Goal revealed on Sunday that City had made Wolfsburg an enticing offer worth £45 million for De Bruyne, who lit up the Bundesliga last season with 10 goals and 20 assists and also scored in a 3-1 DFB Pokal final victory over Borussia Dortmund.

And Kompany believes any deal that brings his fellow Belgian to the Etihad Stadium this summer will be a great boost for City.

“Let’s put it this way, he definitely wouldn’t make the team weaker," Kompany told reporters. "Any team he goes to he will make them stronger. He’s a phenomenal player. A complete player.

“Our squad can become stronger just by getting everyone in the right direction. We had so many players who just didn’t perform last season – and I was one of them. If they do perform this year it will be like having six or seven new players. Then we will have a stronger squad.

"But players like Raheem [Sterling], [Fabian] Delph from what I’ve seen and Patrick Roberts too, they’ll give us something different, so many options.”

City capitalised on opening-weekend stumbles from Chelsea and Arsenal by getting their Premier League title charge off to a perfect start with a convincing 3-0 victory over West Brom at The Hawthorns.

And Kompany, who scored his side's third goal with an emphatic header, believes City's biggest challenge this term will be to regain their lost consistency.

“We showed a lot of good things [against West Brom]," he added. "For us it’s about consistency. We’ve shown what we can do, now people are going to say why can’t you do it every game? Why can’t we do it every game? Well, we have so far, it’s a 100% record.

"But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We had good spells last season, but our consistency is what cost us. It would be nice to see us be consistent every week although you can’t be at that level every week, it’s impossible. But being consistent is important for us.

“We’re happy to let other teams be the favourites. For us it’s a different position to be in, not being talked of among the favourites. It’s a good challenge for the team. There’s a lot of hunger and desire. I thought for the first hour we were exceptional against West Brom.”

The story behind the Pedro to Man Utd transfer deal

    pedro-uefa-super-cup_an14573qqdrc1dtle89n71w77.jpg

The 11-year association between Barcelona and Pedro is drawing to a close with the Spain forward on the verge of a move to Manchester United which could eventually be worth £22.3 million (€31.2m).

As in any long-term relationship, there are bound to be bumps in the road - Pedro has constantly fought for Barcelona's affection and recognition throughout a trophy-laden career - but it is the mutual respect between the player and the European champions that will ultimately ensure that United are to get their man at a sensationally low price, just two months after the 28-year-old signed a new four-year deal at the Camp Nou.

Only when club director Robert Fernandez spoke out of turn on Tuesday, to tell the world that Pedro had asked for a move, did player and club stray from the united front that had been maintained throughout this protracted saga.

United fans also have Liverpool to thank in no small way, since the Merseysiders' decision to sell Luis Suarez last summer pushed Pedro out of the starting XI for good. Ultimately, the 28-year-old had grown too accustomed to being regarded as the odd one out as four forwards fought for the three spots in Barca's front line.

After breaking into the first-team squad in 2009, Pedro faced the formidable task of displacing one of Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry but the Spaniard forced his way up the pecking order to form part of a fearsome attacking trident alongside Messi and David Villa as the club beat United to win the Champions League again in 2011. In a side considered one of the best to ever play the game, Pedro was key.

He was the man to be affected most though by the arrivals of Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez. Again he showed that he had the fight to stick around at the club he loved and battled for his place in the first team.

    Z7RQ8fx.png

The signing of Suarez was one fight too many, though, as it turned out. The Uruguayan cost Barcelona £75m and there was no way that Luis Enrique was going to hold him back. Even taking into account the need to rotate his squad, the Barca coach only found a starting spot for Pedro on 20 occasions across all competitions in 2014-15. The biggest loser in the 122-goal exploits of Messi, Neymar and Suarez was undoubtedly Pedro.

So when Barcelona announced two days before their Champions League final meeting with Juventus that Pedro would be signing a new four-year contract, it appeared that there would be more substitute appearances to come for the 51-cap Spain international.

The club's statement revealing the deal featured a key line in which it confirmed that "his buyout clause will remain at €150m [£110m]". In the weeks leading up to the renewal, it had been suggested that Pedro would sign a new deal only if his €150m release figure were reduced to allow him a greater say, should the life of sitting on the outside looking in begin to frustrate him still further.

Barcelona, though, wanted to retain a say in the transfer process should it come about. Had they reduced the clause, Pedro would have had free rein to join any club who matched the asking price, even if that mean him signing for a Chelsea or even – heaven forbid – Real Madrid.

Yet Barca also wanted to do right by a player who had become one of the most treasured assets in the first-team squad over the last 11 years. While the official line was that the €150m figure remained intact, behind the scenes there had been a gentlemen's agreement that a lesser amount of €30m (£22m) would be accepted if the transfer suited all parties.

    yIJOt5N.png

United might be considered one of Barcelona's biggest rivals on the European stage but there remains a huge amount of respect between the two footballing institutions. Once Pedro showed an inclination to leave, Barca agreed not to stand in his way while also making it abundantly clear that they wanted him to stay.

It was the least that they owed Pedro after his years of fighting his way into the best forward lines in football.

It then became just a matter of timing and, while some talks took place either side of the International Champions Cup meeting between the two clubs in Santa Clara, the parties separated without a final agreement when United headed for their final tour game in Chicago and Barcelona flew to Maryland to face Chelsea.

A further delay came about when Barca insisted on waiting until Neymar and Messi had both returned from delayed summer breaks before brokering a deal and they also haggled with United over the particulars of a transfer which could ultimately come in €2m north of the original €30m agreement.

But when Neymar's contraction of the mumps resulted in Barca asking for more time, Pedro ran out of patience. Fernandez's announcement that the player wanted out was the first sign that not everybody was pulling in the same direction and Pedro reacted with some displeasure after coming on to net the winner in the pulsating 5-4 Uefa Super Cup win over Sevilla.

"I am not completely happy in the situation," Pedro told reporters. "Robert Fernandez said something he doesn't know. I spoke with the captains, the president, the coach... and only a few seconds with him. I don't understand why he said I asked to leave using these words; he doesn't know how I feel in this team.

"I will always be a Barcelona supporter, no matter what finally happens.

"When there are rumours that I can leave, it is not an easy situation for me. I have always tried to give my best to the club. I am ambitious and I want to play as much as possible. I was angry when I knew I would be on the bench, especially having thought I'd have a chance because of Neymar's illness.

"I don't want to leave Barcelona but it is a complicated situation. It is not a money question but a continuity question. I want to play, Luis Enrique preferred other players and I have been waiting a lot of time."

But the waiting is almost over. A marriage of convenience is drawing to a close, the Super Cup divorce party went off with a bang and United are ready to welcome their new man with open arms.

Messi, Ronaldo and Suarez up for Best Player in Europe Prize

    1492132_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luiz Suarez have been announced as the final three candidates for the 2014-15 Uefa Best Player in Europe award.

Ronaldo, who picked up the trophy last year, earns another nomination after a season in which he scored 61 goals in 54 appearances and claimed the Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Messi and Suarez, meanwhile, formed a fearsome attacking partnership with Neymar that helped inspire Barcelona to the treble in Luis Enrique's first season in charge.

Ronaldo and the Barca duo finished ahead of Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, Neymar and Chelsea star Eden Hazard in the running for the award.

The Uefa Best Player in Europe prize is voted for by journalists from all 54 of Uefa's member associations. Each journalist provides a five-man shortlist who they believe should win the award, with each of those players receiving a points tally based on the ranking and number of votes they receive.

The winner will be announced at the Champions League group-stage draw on August 27, where a jury will vote for one of the final trio.

'Fantastic' Cech will recover from nightmare Arsenal debut, insists Lehmann

    1763492_heroa.jpg

Arsenal legend Jens Lehmann has backed Petr Cech to enjoy a "fantastic" season at the club - but says he will need time to adapt following his summer transfer from rivals Chelsea.

Cech made two costly misjudgements on his Premier League debut for the Gunners as Arsene Wenger’s side lost 2-0 at home to West Ham on Sunday.

Lehmann, who played in goal during the ‘Invincibles’ season in 2004, admits he was shocked by Cech’s performance but believes the 33-year-old will be motivated to prove a point to Chelsea.

"It surprised me because I expected him to be really good from the beginning,” Lehmann told Goal from the United States, where he is taking part in the Bundesliga Legends Tour.

"But sometimes it takes a while to adapt to a new club, particularly when you are coming from a major enemy like Chelsea. It takes time, if he can forget about it at all.

"On the other hand, Chelsea disappointed him because he couldn’t play there last season. He has seen the cruelty in football - you are a hero one year and the next year you are not even playing any more.

"That could spur him on to play a fantastic season for Arsenal."

Cech cost £10m when he arrived earlier this summer and Lehmann remains convinced that the Czech international is the shot-stopper Arsenal need to topple the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City for the first time in 12 years.

"He is the goalkeeper Arsenal need to win the title," Lehmann added. "He’s got the experience, he’s got most of the ingredients that a fantastic goalkeeper needs and he is among the best ever goalkeepers.

"It depends on him. I haven’t spoken to him, so I don’t know how he feels physically now, but I think he’s still got some great years to perform at this level. He will give confidence to the whole team, but of course he has to perform."

Cech's arrival in north London has prompted Wojciech Szczesny to join Roma on a season-long loan and the Arsenal legend has backed the Pole to return to the Emirates Stadium with a winning mentality.

"Why can’t he come back? I’ve always said that when you’re too young, you shouldn’t play for a big club when they need you to win something," Lehmann continued.

"It’s about mentality. When you commit to a big club which his ambitious to win trophies, you have to commit to that target with no distractions."

Victory over Chelsea is vital - Sterling

    raheemsterling-cropped_uf2aqxsbf8ab1lnub7joipaip.jpg

Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling believes it is "vital" his team beat Chelsea when the two title rivals meet at the Etihad on Sunday.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men kicked off the new campaign with an impressive 3-0 away victory against West Brom after two goals from Yaya Toure and an accurate header from captain Vincent Kompany.

Ahead of the early-season clash with the defending Premier League champions, £49m summer recruit Sterling says it is crucial his new team get off to the best possible start.

“I'm hoping this one will go our way and it's vital that it does. We're on our own ground and with it being our first home game of the season, we want to get off on the right foot,” he told the club’s official website."I've done alright against them in the past and results-wise, I think it's been pretty even overall so far in the matches I've played in.

"The only promise I will make is that I will try my best at all times - I will aim to create and score as many goals as I can for the team and work really hard every week.

"I've set myself targets for goals and assists and I know where I want to be but I don't really want to reveal what they are because I'll put myself under massive pressure - but I've got personal goals that I want to reach this season for City and hopefully I can meet them."

Sterling expects the title race to be tight, with City and Chelsea expected to be joined by the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in challenging.
"It’s going to be a really tough season," the 20-year-old forward said.

"Everyone has strengthened their squads and the Premier League is always hard to second guess.

"Chelsea are very strong in every department from their defence and midfield to their attack, but it should be a good game and I’m really looking forward to playing in this match."

I'm happy at PSG - Ibrahimovic

    zlatanibrahimovic-cropped_1ewbl9p7cqj1h175453gz1up8b.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic has insisted he is happy with life at the Ligue 1 champions and has no intention of leaving the club.

Ibrahimovic, 33, has been linked to numerous clubs in the close-season, with Milan and MLS mooted as possible destinations.

However, the Sweden captain said he was content with life at Parc des Princes, with his contract set to expire mid-2016."I'm happy. I'm happy where I am. I have another year to play in PSG, another year on my contract," Ibrahimovic told Bleacher Report.

"I'm playing with great players, the club is growing, I have big ambitions, I'm willing to do everything to be the best and I'm enjoying it. I'm a PSG player."

PSG clinched four trophies last season, with only the Champions League missing after a quarter-final exit, and Ibrahimovic believes Laurent Blanc's men are capable of challenging for the European crown this campaign.

"For me, the Champions League is about small details. The small details make a difference."With a little bit of luck, right moment to be as strong as possible, we probably can make it.

"We have the team with a possibility to go all the way, but it's not easy. We will be there and we will give a hard time for all the other teams, that's for sure."

Goal understands Ibrahimovic will play no part in Sunday's Ligue 1 clash with Ajaccio due to knee and ankle issues which he picked up in their Trophee des Champions win at the start of the month.

Gotze unhappy at Bayern, believes Elber

    mario-gotze-pep-guardiola-bayern-munich-2014_zg2nc4iffims1arzukqa5tl6x.jpg

Former Bayern Munich striker Giovane Elber believes Mario Gotze is unhappy at the Bundesliga champions.

The Germany international earned himself a move to Bayern in the summer of 2013 after a string of fine performances for Borussia Dortmund, but has so far been unable to live up to the high expectations at the Allianz Arena.

Elber feels Gotze's inability to replicate his Dortmund form for Bayern is largely down due to the different conditions at the Bavarians, where he needs Pep Guardiola to make him feel loved.

"There is a huge difference between how he played for Dortmund and how he plays for Bayern," Elber told AZ.

"You play different when you feel happy somewhere. Everything seems to go automatically then. When you are unhappy somewhere, you put too much thought into everything you do. And things simply don't work out then.

"I don't know how his relationship with Pep Guardiola is, but Gotze looks a bit like a Brazilian to me. You have to flatter him and boost his confidence. You have to tell him that you are there for him to help him.

"It is hard when there are already doubts before the season has even started. Bayern should back him rather than sell him."

Gotze, who has been linked with Scudetto holders Juventus, has a contract with Bayern until June 2017.

De Bruyne not pushing for Wolfsburg exit, says Hecking

    kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg_1gccxykoj093v1262uh72x9941.jpg

Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking has stressed Kevin De Bruyne remains focused on the Bundesliga club and is not pushing for a transfer to Manchester City.

The Premier League outfit are keen to lure the 24-year-old away from his current club and have tabled an offer worth £45 million for the Belgium international.

Sporting director Klaus Allofs admitted earlier this week that City's interest has turned De Bruyne's head a bit, yet Hecking is adamant the attacking midfielder is still committed to Wolfsburg.

"There has not been an offer for him," Hecking told Sport Bild. "Kevin does not give the impression that he wants to leave Wolfsburg. He is giving his all in training.

"He is an integral part of my plans. I am convinced that he will only get better."

Nevertheless, Hecking is confident Wolfsburg have what it takes to cope with De Bruyne's departure if he were to leave this summer.

"It would be hard for any team to replace a player of Kevin's stature. But if he were to leave, the responsibility of replacing him should not rest on just one player's shoulders. Every departure is a chance for others.

"Our team is good enough, even if Kevin is obviously someone who makes the difference."

De Bruyne signed for Vfl from Chelsea 18 months ago and won the Bundesliga best player of the season award in 2014-15 as the club finished second behind Bayern Munich.

Former Italy coach Cesare Prandelli believes Juventus could face a tough task to successfully defend their Serie A title this campaign.

The Turin giants have dominated the Italian top flight in recent seasons and are once more among the favourites to win the Scudetto in 2015-16.

However, Prandelli feels the loss of Andrea Pirlo, Carlos Tevez and Arturo Vidal in combination with their rivals' activity in the transfer market has left Massimiliano Allegri's men vulnerable.

"The first word that comes to mind when talking about the Scudetto is balance," Prandelli told Corriere dello Sport.

"Juventus will have to be very alert. Napoli have strengthened, Roma as well and both AC Milan and Inter have clear ideas about returning to the top and playing Champions League football.

"And then there are clubs like Lazio and Fiorentina who are not to be underestimated either.

"Juventus have lost three players of the highest level, but have replaced them with three players of the same level."

Last year's Champions League finalists started the 2015-16 campaign in fine fashion as they beat Lazio 2-0 in the Supercoppa Italiana.

Luis Enrique: Pedro's future in his own hands

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has stressed Pedro's future is in his own hands as Manchester United remain keen to sign the forward.

Pedro, 28, handed in a transfer request on Tuesday, mere hours before scoring the extra-time winner in Barca's thrilling 5-4 European Supercup success over Sevilla.

United have already reached an agreement with Barcelona over a transfer fee and now it's up to the Spain international whether he indeed wants to move to Old Trafford.

"We've heard his opinions, it's a difficult decision that he has to make but we'll wait and see what he decides," Luis Enrique said at a press conference.

"He wants to leave because he's not getting minutes but we want to give him minutes so it's a difficult situation. I certainly want him to stay.

"I'm looking forward to the end of the transfer market so I'll know exactly what I do have.

"I don't want to get drawn into controversies, we all understand Pedro's situation, he's always someone the Barca fans will love because of his personality and his performances on the pitch."

Pedro started Tuesday's win over Sevilla on the bench, but Luis Enrique has suggested he could return to the starting XI for the Supercopa de Espana game against Athletic Bilbao.

"I haven't announced my squad and I don't base my squad around what's happening in the transfer market. He's available so he can play.

"He didn't train for a couple of days because of thigh trouble but I know he's in a difficult situation.

"He seems the same as ever. He's always a very hard worker and we know he's in a particular situation but there's no change since the start of pre-season."

English clubs can't throw their money at Muller - Rummenigge

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is adamant that reported Manchester United target Thomas Muller "is not for sale", poking fun at Premier League sides for throwing around their money.

Ever-increasing television revenue has seen English teams attract a great deal of talent to the top flight this summer, including unexpected deals such as Xherdan Shaqiri's move to Stoke City and Yohan Cabaye joining Crystal Palace.

And Rummenigge is amused by their persistence but still has no intention of letting go of the Germany forward.

"Muller is not for sale," he told reporters. "Our English colleagues seem to be unable to spend all of their money."

As well as Muller, United have pursued Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos this summer but the Spain international is set to sign a new contract at the Santiago Bernabeu. Manchester City, meanwhile, have seen their plan to sign Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg drag out over the summer.

Bayern have also been linked to De Bruyne but Rummenigge is comfortable with their Bundesliga rivals' declaration that the Belgian will not be sold.

"We won't cause Wolfsburg any headaches," he remarked. "Klaus Allofs said that it is 99.9 per cent sure that nothing is going to happen - and Bayern won't get in at 100%.

"There might be English clubs who try their luck but it is nice to see that money isn't everything - by which I mean Ramos, Muller, De Bruyne..."
