Pedro is what Manchester United need - Van Gaal

Louis van Gaal admits Pedro is precisely the kind of player Manchester United need as speculation mounts that the unsettled Barcelona star is set to complete a summer move to Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old was omitted from Luis Enrique's starting XI for Barcelona's Uefa Super Cup clash with Sevilla, with technical secretary Robert Fernandez claiming the player had informed the club that he wanted to leave.

Pedro came off the bench to score an extra-time winner in a 5-4 victory for the Catalan giants and afterwards rebuked Fernandez for his comments, though he appeared to distance himself from his team-mates during the trophy celebrations.

Speculation is now mounting that Pedro will imminently complete a £21 million move to Old Trafford and while Van Gaal refused to shed any light on the status of the deal, he re-asserted his admiration for the Spaniard.

"You have to ask Pedro, not me," Van Gaal insisted when asked about the deal. "My answer is it’s a process - a club, a player and we are there also. I don’t mention anything to you until he has signed. Then I come to you and say ‘Pedro is here’. But it’s still not the case and we shall wait and see."

When asked if Pedro was the kind of fast, direct striker United are looking for, Van Gaal replied: "Pedro is a player like that... so write it!"

Depay can handle the pressure of being Manchester United's No.7

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson believes that summer signing Memphis Depay can handle the pressure of wearing the iconic No.7 shirt at Old Trafford.

The 13-time Premier League champions signed Depay on a four-year-deal from PSV earlier this summer after the Dutchman impressed in the Eredivisie last season.

And after Angel Di Maria departed for Paris Saint-Germain, Depay was given the vacant No.7 jersey on request - a decision that Robson fully agrees with.

Speaking to the official club website, Robson revealed: "I think he’s a confident lad."

"He’s got great ability and great pace. So I don’t think that’s going to be a hassle to him, otherwise he wouldn’t have accepted the No.7 shirt as soon as it was offered to him.

"I think if he had a problem, mentally, handling the pressure that comes with the no 7 shirt, he would have said 'no' and asked for another number.

"So I’m sure and would hope he will enjoy playing for Manchester United, relax and play in the way he wants to play.

"Memphis is only a young lad so it’s going to take a little bit of time for him to settle down. It looks like he’s got great attributes and he could do really well for us."

Depay has claimed that, while he understands and appreciates the history of the No.7 shirt, he wants to make his own impact at the club and is confident in his ability to shine at Old Trafford.

"Yes, of course (I’m aware of the pressure) and the history," he said earlier this week.

"I appreciate the history, but I want to be my own man. It’s an honour to wear the No.7 and I will wear it with pride.

"Last year I played with seven on my back (for PSV) and I scored a lot of goals so I am confident with that number."

Suarez: Leaving Liverpool the right decision

Luis Suarez has insisted that he has no regrets over his decision to leave Liverpool for Barcelona in the summer of 2014.

The Uruguay international said farewell to Anfield ahead of last season after three-and-a-half years with Liverpool and has since developed into a key figure at Barca.

Suarez netted 25 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions in 2014-15 as the Catalans landed the treble and he is thoroughly enjoying life at Camp Nou.

"Leaving Liverpool for Barcelona was the right decision,” Suarez told Sport360.

"Winning trophies was a part of my decision in joining Barcelona, but also as a family we knew it was the right decision even before I won a trophy.

"I am very happy at Barcelona – I am at the best club in the world."

The prolific attacker then went on to stress that he is desperate for more silverware after last season's treble.

Vidal will see plenty of red cards at Bayern Munich, says Maier

Bayern Munich icon Sepp Maier expects new arrival Arturo Vidal to see plenty of red cards in the years to come, but believes the Chile international will prove to be a fine addition for the Bundesliga champions.

The Bavarians lured the 28-year-old away from Juventus last month after selling Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United and Maier feels the midfielder adds something to the team Bayern were previously missing.

"Vidal will get a few more red cards than Schweinsteiger got. You have to take that into account," Maier told Bild.

"But someone's got to do the dirty work in midfield and make the occasional foul. You need players like him if you are to achieve anything.

"It's alright for the rest of the team to be nice guys, but there always has to be one guy who is not afraid to stick his feet in. And Vidal is just that guy."

Maier also had his say on the future of Mario Gotze, who has been heavily linked with a summer exit, and has urged Bayern to hold on to the Germany international.

"You simply cannot sell Gotze. A young player like him needs time. Bayern will have to be patient and I have no doubt he will eventually find his feet.

Arsenal not interested in Krychowiak, says Wenger

Arsene Wenger has made it clear that Arsenal are not interested in signing Polish midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak from Sevilla.

A number of recent reports suggested the 25-year-old had caught the interest of the Arsenal scouts with his fine performances for the Liga side in 2014-15, yet Wenger has stressed he is not looking to strengthen his midfield with the former Reims man.

"Are we interested in signing Krychowiak? No," the Arsenal boss stated at a press conference.

The Frenchman then went on to discuss the situation of Mathieu Flamini, who has been told he can leave Arsenal this summer, but is holding out for a pay-off from the club.

"Flamini? I expect him to stay."

Arsenal were beaten 2-0 by West Ham on matchday one, but Wenger has insisted his side's disappointing start will not force him to flex his muscle in the transfer market.

"When you lose a game there is a demand to sign players. Let's look inside and not except a miracle from outside.

"We have a great group with a fantastic mentality. We are united and we will focus together on the next game.

"One result does not affect our transfer plans. We are working hard on that."

Allardyce slams 'ungrateful' West Ham owners

Former West Ham manager Sam Allardyce hit out at the club's co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold over his exit, describing the pair as "ungrateful".

Allardyce was relieved of his duties following West Ham's final Premier League match of the 2014-15 season in May, after the Londoners decided not to renew the 60-year-old's contract.

The Englishman's departure came after guiding West Ham to 12th in the standings, having finished 13th and 10th in the seasons prior, and their former boss pulled no punches in his view of West Ham's unrealistic expectations, while dismissing their ambitions of qualifying for Europe under new manager Slaven Bilic.

"'The West Ham Way' is obviously not winning every week, like I tried to do," Allardyce said in quotes published by The Mirror.

"I did everything they asked for and they wanted more, and I found that extremely ungrateful in terms of what I'd done for them.

"They thought we could get into Europe [West Ham played in Europe this season via Fair Play table] and thought they might be able to get to a cup final, and that wasn't in the format of the job description when I started.

"I don't take kindly to people, who don't appreciate what you do for them.

"We both decided to part company in quite an amicable way in the end, but I certainly wasn't going to stay, in my mind, for a long, long time."

Allardyce added: "If David Sullivan and David Gold have told Slaven Bilic that they expect to get into Europe this year then I think it's way beyond the capabilities of the squad at this moment in time.

"I told them that. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why they didn't renew my contract in the end?

"West Ham was a case of building a broken football club back up again. [Getting West Ham promoted] was the biggest job I had done in one season.

"Ultimately, my biggest problem was finishing tenth in the first year [back in the Premier League] — I would have been much better off finishing fourth from bottom!"

Arsene Wenger has waded into the row surrounding Jose Mourinho and Eva Carneiro with a thinly veiled dig at the Chelsea manager.

The Portuguese boss has come under fire for the manner in which he reacted to Carneiro - the club doctor - rushing onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard towards the end of the Blues' 2-2 draw with Swansea on Saturday.

And although some have leapt to Mourinho's defence, Wenger appeared to take the side of the Blues' medical department, suggesting his counterpart was wrong to turn on his own staff.

He told reporters: "Football is difficult enough without unity... [but] I have not a great interest in what is going on at Chelsea. It is the ref who makes the decision.

"You speak about the Chelsea story. You know I am not too interested in what is happening at Chelsea.

"The rules are clear when the referee gives an indication to come on. He makes the decision."

Wenger has clashed with Mourinho on a number of occasions during their time in the Premier League, most recently when Mourinho said the Gunners had "abandoned their philosophy" to defend a 1-0 lead against Chelsea and win the Community Shield.

And on Sunday the 52-year-old grew angry when Hazard was forced to leave the pitch after receiving treatment, with Chelsea already down to 10 men, before re-entering the action.

Speaking to reporters after the game, he said: "I was unhappy with my medical staff. They were impulsive and naive.

"Whether you are a kit man, doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game."

Goal understands Carneiro will lose her matchday duties following the incident. On Monday, she thanked the public for the support she has received via her Facebook account.

Shaqiri move is 'not about money, it's about playing', insists Hughes

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes defended record signing Xherdan Shaqiri, saying the star winger's decision to join the club was "not about money".

Shaqiri was criticised by former Germany international Stefan Effenberg, who slammed the 23-year-old for a "badly advised" move to Stoke that he said was about money rather than bettering his career.

Hughes rubbished those suggestions and claimed that the Switzerland international just wanted more playing time after difficult stints at Bayern Munich and Inter.

"Of course financial considerations come into a deal, they always do, but we are hardly blowing our rivals out of the water with our financial might," he told reporters.

"We can pay the going rate when we need to, but this transfer is not about money, it's about playing.

"Xherdan has been with two big European clubs but he hasn’t played as many games as he would have liked. That’s what we can promise him, and for a young player that is what is important."

Shaqiri's addition means Stoke now have the likes of Ibrahim Afellay, Marco van Ginkel, Bojan and Joselu in their squad.

In addition, Hughes admitted that the Potters got a bit lucky with the deal, whilst talking up what Shaqiri had already brought to his team.

"Sometimes circumstances have to fall for you and you need that little bit of luck. We probably had a similar situation with Bojan when he came. We were the right club at the right time," he said.

"He [Shaqiri] looked really excited this morning and, as you'd expect when you bring in a player of his quality, almost everybody’s level went up at training."

'He's a bit of Messi and Ronaldo' - Sherwood on Aston Villa new boy Adama

Aston Villa's latest summer signing Adama Traore is "a bit of Messi and Ronaldo", according to boss Tim Sherwood.

The 19-year-old winger completed a move worth €10 million plus a potential €2m in add-ons on Friday, putting pen to paper on a five-year contract to become Villa's ninth senior signing of a busy summer transfer window.

Sherwood believes Adama's blend of physical and technical attributes make him an exciting addition to English football and insists the Spaniard's potential means he could one day match the very best in the world.

"I’ve known about him for a couple of years now because I tried to see if it was possible to bring him to Tottenham when I was there," Sherwood said of his new signing on Thursday. "He’s someone I’ve been tracking for a long time.

"He’s played a lot of games for someone so young because he’s physically a man He’s been a man for a long time now - he’s a big, powerful boy, very quick, dynamic, maverick-type player. You never know what’s going to come out next.

"Those players are very few and far between so I’m delighted that he’s chosen Aston Villa to continue his development because that’s what he is. He’s not the finished article by any means but he’s certainly a player that can help us out now, and for the long-term future of the club it’s magnificent."

When asked who he would compare Adama to, a smiling Sherwood replied: "A bit of Messi and Ronaldo. He’s very dynamic. He stays wide, likes to pick it up and run at defenders. He doesn’t give them a minute’s peace.

"I don’t want to compare him with another player - hopefully he can make a name for himself and everyone will want to be the new Adama Traore."

Van Gaal hits back at Stoichkov: He is still angry because I sent him away at Barcelona

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hit back at Hristo Stoichkov in the wake of the former Barcelona attacker's scathing attack at the Dutchman.

The Bulgaria legend hit out at Van Gaal earlier this week when he advised Pedro to stay at Barcelona, claiming the ex-Netherlands boss was destroying United like he previously did to the Catalans.

Nevertheless, Van Gaal was not too impressed by his outburst and believes Stoichkov is still holding a grudge against him because he was dismissed when the 64-year-old was in charge of Barcelona.

"You always have to bear in mind who has said something. And then I already know why he said it in this case. So it is not bothering me at all," Van Gaal said at a press conference.

"As a manager, you have to make certain decisions. And Stoichkov is one of the players I sent away at Barcelona. That's the only reason why he is saying stuff like this."

Stoichkov enjoyed two successful spells with Barcelona between 1990 and 1998, but his time at the club came to an abrupt end after he fell out with Van Gaal.

Mourinho plays down Chelsea medical row

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has played down criticism he has received for a row that developed between him and his medical staff in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Swansea City but confirmed that club doctor Eva Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn will not be on the bench for Sunday's Premier League encounter with Manchester City.

The Portuguese labelled the pair "impulsive and naive" and suggested that they did not "understand the game" after they ran onto the pitch in the closing stages of the Swansea game to treat Eden Hazard after a heavy tackle.

Hazard had to leave the field following treatment, forcing the Blues to play the ensuing seconds with just eight outfield players after the earlier dismissal of Thibaut Courtois.

Mourinho then reportedly reduced the first-team responsibilities of Carneiro and Fearn after the Gibraltar-born doctor posted on Facebook thanking the public for all their support in the days following the row.

At a scheduled pre-match press conference on Friday, Mourinho confirmed that Carneiro and Fearn would not be present at the Etihad Stadium but insisted that the disagreement had been healthy.

He told reporters: "I don't want to run away from [the incident]. I accept the question and understand.

"First of all, I want to say I have a fantastic medical department, with top doctors, more than a dozen professionals, a very good relationship with them and, as they tell me all the time, they were never praised so much as in last few years. I praise them lots of times. They don't forget that, I don't.

"We have disagreements during this period [but] we need disagreements to improve. We work together.

"Your question about the bench... for some people it's very important. For others, the most important thing is not what people think you do, it's what you do. The bench is my responsibility. It's my decision.

"Every week I face a decision about the bench. I have seven assistants, only four can go on the bench. We have four kitmen, only one goes on the bench. Medical, only two go to the bench.

"It's important to be on the bench for some; for others it's more important what they do behind the scenes for the good of the team.

"Jon Fearn and Dr Carneiro will not be on the bench but that doesn't mean that Sunday is the rest of our season or the rest of our careers.

"My decision [this weekend] does not mean they won't be on the bench in the future."

Mourinho declined to address accusations of sexism relating to his treatment of Carneiro but reiterated that he has a healthy relationship with Chelsea staff and does not see himself as ruthless.

"The relationships of the majority of those who work with me are open to disagreement, open to criticism," he added. "The game is a very emotional space for every one of us. Football is football and the match is the match. Everything in the match can be different.

"The meeting I had with the medical department told me that the way we are doing things together since two years ago allows us to have this kind of relationship.

"I speak about myself, not about other managers, and I am far from being ruthless. Far, far. I have a fantastic relationship with almost everyone who works with me.

"I am open to mistakes, open to communication, I am open to dialogue and criticism. I make mistakes and as people in my medical staff were saying to me yesterday, 'We work together, we improve together'."

Kompany: I hope Hazard gets diarrhea

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has singled out compatriot Eden Hazard as Chelsea's main attacking threat ahead of Sunday's Premier League encounter and has joked he would not mind it if the winger were to sit the game out due to illness.

The 24-year-old has developed into one of Chelsea's undisputed stars since joining them from Lille in 2012 and Kompany believes his fellow Belgium international has the potential to reach the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"You’d almost hope that Eden Hazard would have diarrhea," Kompany told Het Nieuwsblad .

"Now let's be serious. You can't underestimate the impact he has on Chelsea. And then you'll expect he would have a dip in his performance level. Last week, against Swansea, he maybe didn't play his best first half, but when they were reduced to 10, he was the only one who was dangerous. Because he ran past three, four defenders.

"You can have as many tactical plans as you want, if Eden starts running, it is chaos. He's at a level where he decides how good his team are.

"Messi and Ronaldo are stats animals. If you look at their talent, you can compare Eden to them. But they score a lot. Unbelievable. But Eden has made so much progression the last few years that it is possible he reaches their level. It wouldn't even be a bad performance when he ends up just behind Messi and Ronaldo."

Hazard netted 14 goals in 38 Premier League appearances in 2014-15, while setting up nine more.

Pellegrini: I will shake Mourinho's hand

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini insists that he harbours no ill feeling towards Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and will shake his rival's hand when they meet on Sunday.

The Premier League champions travel to the Etihad Stadium for the first match between title rivals in the 2015-16 campaign.

Relationships between Pellegrini and Mourinho have been tense at times, with the Chilean refusing to shake his opponent's hand following Chelsea's 2-1 win in October 2013.

However, the City boss has no intention of repeating that, telling reporters: "I have my differences with him but I always shake hands with him."

City hope to have last season's top scorer, Sergio Aguero, available for the game, the Argentine having been limited to a substitute's role in the 3-0 win over West Brom on Monday.

Pellegrini added: "Sergio worked the whole week without any problems.

"Maybe he is not 100 per cent fit because it is better for the player to do a long pre-season but now we are ready in the Premier League and Sergio doesn't have any problems."
