De Bruyne agent denies Manchester City snub: I'm furious!

    kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg_873h1dpokeu2185o231lv1mpq.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne’s agent is "furious" after the attacker was lured into telling reporters he would "definitely play for Wolfsburg this season".

Goal understands Manchester City have tabled a £45 million bid for the Belgium international as Manuel Pellegrini’s men look to finally seal the midfielder who they have tracked all summer.

However, De Bruyne appeared to dismiss any chance of a move to the Etihad Stadium by insisting he would be staying at the Volkswagen Arena at a Sport Bild award event on Monday.

The 24-year-old's agent, Patrick De Koster, responded to his remarks by insisting De Bruyne was put in "an awkward position" by being told to repeat after the presenter when his grasp on German is not the best.

"I am furious by what has happened tonight. Kevin wanted to show respect by attending this event," he told Sky Sports.

"No decision has been made on Kevin's future in this transfer window. We have yet to find out if Wolfsburg has reached any agreement with a club.

"Kevin remains a Wolfsburg player, and is focused on his job at the club. He also remains happy at Wolfsburg."

i was feeling worried when i saw the reports that he will be staying

Mertesacker backs Cech to be an Arsenal success

    petrcechpermertesacker-cropped_zekmjrk7ndwf110zs640s7dsh.jpg

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is adamant that new goalkeeper Petr Cech will help lead the club to success, despite making an indifferent start to life at the Emirates.

Cech endured a nightmare Premier League debut for Arsenal as his two mistakes saw West Ham claim a shock 2-0 win in their first league outing, having helped Arsene Wenger's men defeat former club Chelsea in the Community Shield the week prior.

Czech Republic international Cech looked more assured in Arsenal's 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday and Mertesacker is in no doubt that the pair will build a formidable partnership as the club prepare to face Liverpool in a heavyweight clash on Monday.

"Petr is very experienced. You can feel that, he has lots of things to say and in the dressing room he gives us a great lift," Mertesacker told reporters.

"Even when we lose a game, he has some great ideas on and off the pitch. He is experienced enough to think about what went wrong, you don't have to tell him.

"My feeling is he comes back even stronger, so there is no doubt he will be a great addition for us. Even when you are experienced, sometimes mistakes happen.

"The interaction between the goalkeeper and the back four has to be top to compete in the Premier League. Sometimes it takes longer than you think. Petr came and had that understanding from the start, we both communicate well and understand each other as someone who has to talk and is really responsible.

"We match our ambitions on the pitch and so it is great to communicate with him."

The Gunners travel to Anfield looking to record their second win of the season, with Brendan Rodgers' men aiming to continue their 100 per cent start to the campaign.

Luis Enrique: Pique red card ended Barcelona's sextuple hopes

    luisenrique-cropped_1aotiyrqyxr811omhm2u83po77.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique feels Gerard Pique's dismissal in the return leg of the Supercopa de Espana effectively ended their hopes of winning the sextuple in 2015.

Athletic recorded a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou on Monday to defeat Barcelona on aggregate following last week's 4-0 win at San Mames.

Barca had their work cut out from the first minute after losing the opening leg, but Lionel Messi set about reducing the deficit with a trademark goal approaching half-time.

Pique's 56th-minute red card then dashed their hopes, though, as Athletic responded 16 minutes from time through first-leg hero Aritz Aduriz to end a 31-year trophy drought.

The defeat denied Luis Enrique the chance to equal Pep Guardiola's record of six titles in a calendar year, yet the Barca boss had no issues with his side.

"I think we played very well," Luis Enrique told reporters post-match.

"We got Athletic doubting and I could see our opponents were starting to worry. That's what we were after in this game. We competed and made a huge effort.

"But it all ended when Gerard Pique was sent off."

The Barcelona coach went on to congratulate Athletic but is adamant that Barcelona remain united and determined to win more silverware.

"I can only say well done to Athletic for such a fine performance. Sometimes it’s good to lose in order to appreciate how hard it is to win," he said.

"The team is united and competitive. There is a very tough league campaign ahead of us.

"We want to keep bringing joy to the fans and we want to carry on being a team that sets standards around the world."

La Liga champions Barca have the opportunity to exact revenge when they kick off their league campaign in Bilbao on Sunday.

Mangala can be a hit at Manchester City - Kompany

    eliaquim-mangala-man-city_1jx45lc4t92ni1o6da68rap9d0.jpg

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has backed defender Eliaquim Mangala to prove his worth in the Premier League.

The Frenchman became the most expensive defender in British football history when he joined Manuel Pellegrini's side in a £31.8 million deal from Porto in August last year, and made 25 league appearances in 2014-15.

A series of erratic displays have led to links away from the club, however, with City poised to sign Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia.

Mangala was due to join the Spanish club on loan as part of the transfer, which will cost around £25m, but it now appears that Marcos Lopes is set to move to Valencia instead , and Kompany believes his defensive partner will excel this season, having played a key role in the club's 3-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.

"People always underestimate the hardship of this league. It is very rare, especially with a central defender, for someone to come in and dominate. It is very hard," he told reporters.

"Our defending against Chelsea was made easier by the fact we defended well as a team. We have a style of play where we play very high with a lot of space, so a lot of individual challenges are required.

"Because of that, it is only when the whole team works like we did that we get great defensive performances."

City are currently top of the Premier League table after two games, having also defeated West Brom 3-0, and Kompany says he is unfazed by the club's tag as favourites to win the title.

"Usually we get written off a bit later in the season, then we come back," he said.

"It is not a bad way to start, but for all of a sudden people to talk about us as favourites, why does it matter?

"I am happy for people to say Arsenal, Liverpool, [Manchester] United and Chelsea are the favourites. But if we keep playing like this, you won’t see any sad faces at this club."

'Leave Gotze in peace!' - Sammer hits out at exit rumours

    pep-guardiola-mario-gotze_e60pl01mrfpt1feoe1xx47vba.jpg

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has called for Mario Gotze to be left in peace as speculation continues regarding his future at the Allianz Arena.

The former Borussia Dortmund man has been struggling to find his feet under Pep Guardiola and the close-season arrival of Douglas Costa is set to further threaten his chances of starting regularly.

Gotze featured for the final 25 minutes of Friday's opening-day Bundesliga victory against Hamburg before playing much of Monday's friendly win at Dynamo Dresden.

Sammer has now sought to quell speculation of Gotze leaving Bayern amid ongoing reports of interest from Juventus and Arsenal.

"Let's just all agree on one thing and that is that we just let Mario play football," Sammer told Bild.

"He enjoys our complete confidence, but now leave the boy in peace. It will be better if we do not talk about it constantly.

"If you want to win something big, you need just these players. Dealing with them is even more important than with those who play."

Gotze's relationship with Guardiola has been the subject of scrutiny in recent weeks, with the midfielder having suggested the Bayern boss does not talk to him enough.

The 23-year-old later backtracked on his comments, insisting he was "happy" and "comfortable" at the club.

AC Milan will welcome Ibrahimovic with open arms, says Berlusconi

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-paris-saint-germain_1c917h6onceot1mtdtzb786k51.jpg

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has insisted that Paris Saint-Germain star Zlatan Ibrahimovic will always be welcome at the San Siro.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful spell with the Serie A outfit between 2010 and 2012, before leaving the club for PSG.

Ibrahimovic has been heavily linked with a return to Milan this summer, though, and Berlusconi has made it clear they will always have room for the Sweden international if he wants a comeback.

"We will welcome Ibrahimovic with open arms if he wants to return to Milan," Berlusconi was quoted as saying by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

However, the striker's current deal with PSG runs until June 2016 and the Ligue 1 champions have so far been adamant that they have no intention of letting go of the star.

Milan have already brought in Carlos Bacca and Luiz Adriano to strengthen their front line this summer, with midfielders Alessandro Bertolacci and Jose Mauri and defender Alessio Romagnoli also signed.

Inter right to cash in on Kovacic, says Bergomi

    mateo-kovacic-inter-wolfsburg-19032015_2e1p01usxi7v11aaoulzm7bs3.jpg

Inter icon Giuseppe Bergomi believes the Giuseppe Meazza side have made the right decision to cash in on Mateo Kovacic.

The 21-year-old is set to leave Inter for Real Madrid in a deal worth €35 million and Bergomi feels the offer was too good to turn down, especially given that the Croatia international has failed to fulfil his potential in Serie A.

"I would say this is an important deal for Inter from a financial point of view," Bergomi told FCInterNews.

"We are talking about a significant fee. I think selling him is the right decision.

"Kovacic has never really been able to hit his best form at Inter. He was unable to find his best position under Andrea Stramaccioni and Walter Mazzarri and it is the same under Roberto Mancini."

Head coach Mancini confirmed this week that Uefa's Financial Fair Play restrictions left Inter with little choice but to accept bids for both Kovacic and new Stoke City signing Xherdan Shaqiri.

Kovacic started his professional career with Dinamo Zagreb before joining Inter in January 2013.

The midfielder has since made close to 100 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit.

Luis Enrique frustrated with Pedro saga

    pedroluisenrique-cropped_5r31pa3dy3w41s8wzep57xe69.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has admitted he cannot wait for the transfer window to close amid the ongoing uncertainty about the future of Manchester United target Pedro.

The Spain international is set to move to Old Trafford as both clubs have already reached an agreement, though Neymar's contraction of the mumps has temporarily put the deal on hold as Barcelona wanted to use Pedro in the European Super Cup against Sevilla and the Supercopa de Espana versus Athletic Bilbao.

Luis Enrique has made it clear the situation has proved a distraction, though, and he is counting down the days until August 31, when the window shuts in Spain.

"It's a difficult situation, it's hard to be focused," Luis Enrique said after Barcelona drew 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao on Monday, losing 5-1 on aggregate in the Supercopa de Espana.

"I am just hoping that this damned transfer window closes once and for all to know which players I can count on. But Pedro gave his all."

Barca, who are unable to register and field new players until January, have recruited Aleix Vidal and Arda Turan, while Xavi, Gerard Deulofeu, Adama Traore, Martin Montoya and Ibrahim Afellay have left Camp Nou.

Terry gets away from Manchester City pain by buying new Ferrari

    1328982_heroa.jpg

John Terry suffered the indignity of being substituted at half-time during Chelsea’s chastening 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, but appears to have found a way to get over the experience.

Taking to Instagram, the veteran centre-back has shown off his latest purchase: an extremely rare Ferrari 275 in blue.

Self-dubbed "Supercar dealer" Tom Hartley Jr recently hinted that the iconic car had been sold to a new client, and now Terry has been revealed as the buyer.

The Chelsea captain, clearly keen to treat himself after Sunday's disappointment, posted the picture of his latest purchase as he continues to add to his impressive - and ever-expanding - car collection.

In July of last year, the 34-year-old showed off his £235,000 Rolls-Royce, while he has also been pictured in a Range Rover Overfinch 4x4.

Perhaps Terry is hoping he can drive his troubles away…

Nuno expects swift resolution as Manchester City close in on Otamendi

    1780912_heroa.jpg

Valencia coach Nuno is expecting a swift resolution to Nicolas Otamendi's proposed transfer to Manchester City.

The Argentina international flew to Manchester on Monday with agent Jorge Mendes to discuss the details of a £25 million move, though Goal understands talks stalled when City made it clear that Eliaquim Mangala would not be part of the deal.

Marcos Lopes and Jason Denayer have since been put forward as potential makeweights in the deal, while City may also be forced to up their cash offer to over £30m.

As revealed on Friday, Otamendi has not been included in the matchday squad for Valencia's crucial Champions League qualifier against Monaco on Wednesday, and Nuno insists it has not affected his preparation.

He told reporters: "I understand that you will want to talk about Otamendi, it's a current topic, but I ask you to respect this press conferemce, because the game is very important. The level in training is very good and gives us hope for tomorrow. The players are solely focused on the opponent.

"With respect to Otamendi, that's a topic that the club are taking care of. Shortly we will know what happens, but my job is tomorrow's game. We're very excited and tomorrow is another step."

He added: "Until there is something concrete we can't do anything about signing a new player. The club are able to do it, but we are counting on those we have already and they are transmitting confidence."

Conflicting reports on Tuesday had thrown the defender's move into doubt, with some suggesting he was back in training in Valencia, whereas others insisted he is still in Manchester and even attended City's 3-0 defeat of Chelsea on Sunday.

But Goal understands the move is expected to go through imminently despite the decision to exclude Mangala.

Valencia midfielder Enzo Perez added: "The Otamendi situation is not something which doesn't matter to the rest of us. Nico has given a lot to club and to us, both on and off the pitch. Now he has to sort out his transfer."

Ronaldo back in Real Madrid squad as Benzema misses out

    cristianoronaldo-cropped_1lpq86rtk1wzi1t4r1sv9w3n19.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo is back in Real Madrid's squad for Tuesday's Santiago Bernabeu Trophy clash with Galatasaray, but the injured Karim Benzema remains absent.

The pair missed Real's Audi Cup matches in Munich earlier this month as Ronaldo was suffering a back problem while Benzema injured his thigh.

The Portugal international already returned to training last week and is now raring to go again as Madrid prepare for their La Liga opener against Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

However, Benzema's thigh problem appears more troublesome as he will not feature against Galatasaray and is in danger for the match versus Gijon, too.

The France international's ongoing fitness issue will be a cause for concern for head coach Rafa Benitez as he lacks any genuine alternatives for the No.9 position following Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez's return to Manchester United after his loan spell.

Promising youngster Borja Mayoral, 18, is set to take advantage of Benzema's absence as he has been given the nod for Tuesday's encounter.

Meanwhile, Raphael Varane is unavailable due to muscular problems, while a leg injury is keeping Pepe out of the match versus the Istanbul giants.
