Shaw: Depay & I are forging a partnership

    lukeshawmemphisdepay-cropped_1s06ekmur8loq1pdpbd6xv3uny.jpg

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has hailed summer signing Memphis Depay and believes his relationship with the Dutchman is beginning to blossom.

Depay was the star of the show as United defeated Club Brugge 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off at Old Trafford on Tuesday, scoring twice and assisting the third as Louis van Gaal's side cruised to victory.

Shaw has praised Depay following his man-of-the-match display, and believes he is starting to develop a real understanding with the 21-year-old on the left flank.

"Of course I am really happy for him today," Shaw told MUTV. "He is working so hard in training; he was really trying to get that first goal. Now he's off the mark, hopefully it can bring him many more goals.

"I think our relationship is starting to build up, we have played a couple of games together and I am starting to understand how he wants to play.

"It is great to be playing with him, he can beat a man and he likes the attacking support from me as well – which is something I like to do."

Shaw and Depay have both made three appearances in all competitions for United this season.

Schalke warn Juventus: Draxler will not be allowed to leave on deadline day

    julian-draxler-schalke-duisburg-dfb-cup-08082015_cezvx5kx8ohq1ctczziwwhq5y.jpg

Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt has admitted Julian Draxler could still leave the club amid ongoing interest from Juventus, but is adamant they will only sell if there is time to find a replacement.

The Serie A champions are keen to add some more creativity to their squad this summer and have earmarked the Germany international as the perfect signing, although they had a first offer turned down.

Schalke will only let go of the attacking midfielder if the conditions are right, though, and have urged Juventus to make their next move sooner rather than later.

"If another offer comes in for Draxler, we will take it into consideration," Heldt told Sport Bild.

"But we will not let go of Julian on the cheap.

"And it is clear that there will be a moment where we are no longer willing to sell. We will not wait for an offer until August 31.

"We have to think about our own planning, too."

Draxler, 21, has a contract with Schalke until June 2018 and an offer in excess of €30 million could be needed to prise him away from the Gelsenkirchen side.

Benitez defends Bale after Real Madrid boos

    gareth-bale-selcuk-inan-real-madrid-galatasaray-friendly-18082015_mkimeizva2kp19vro9vu3sdk8.jpg

Real Madrid coach Rafa Benitez has defended Gareth Bale after the Welshman was once more jeered by his own team's fans during the 2-1 friendly win over Galatasaray on Tuesday.

The former Tottenham star endured a difficult 2014-15 campaign in which he was heavily criticised and he again failed to impress versus the Istanbul giants.

Benitez's decision to play Bale in a central role during pre-season has not made life any easier for the 26-year-old, yet the Madrid coach is confident he will be a key figure in 2015-16.

"If you analyse Bale's movements, you'll see they give the team respite," Benitez told AS.

"If he had scored against Galatasaray, people would be saying what a great game he had.

"Logically there will be debate over Isco, Gareth and James. We are looking to forge an understanding between them.

"Isco and James elaborate play between the lines, but not Gareth. He creates spaces and looks to makes runs behind the defence."

Bale was being linked with a move to Manchester United earlier this summer, but Madrid have been adamant they have no intention of letting go of the winger.

He netted 13 goals in 31 La Liga appearances last season after scoring 15 goals in 27 league games in his maiden campaign.

Arsenal's hopes of £45m Benzema deal fade

    833022_heroa.jpg

Arsenal have not given up on a £45 million deal to sign Karim Benzema, but there is a growing acceptance that Real Madrid will stick to their word and refuse to sell the striker this summer.

The Gunners have been hoping to conclude a move for Benzema in the final weeks of the transfer window in a similar manner to the £42m deadline-day signing of Mesut Ozil from Madrid two years ago.

Arsenal will continue to push for Benzema and believe the 27-year-old would be interested in a switch to London having been made aware that the club would be willing to offer him around £150,000 per week.

While Arsene Wenger has publicly played down his attempts to sign Benzema, the club have been working for months behind the scenes on a potential deal for the France international.

Arsenal’s plan has always been to wait until the end of the transfer window in the belief that Real Madrid would change their stance.

But their hopes are diminishing, especially with no sign of Madrid signing another striker to potentially replace the Frenchman this summer. The Spanish giants also insist they have no need to sell the former Lyon star to balance the books, even if they conclude a deal for David de Gea.

There have been several suggestions that Benzema will have a reduced role under Rafael Benitez, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale both likely to play more minutes in central positions this season.

But los Blancos insist Benzema remains a key part of their plans and, crucially, he is a favourite of president Florentino Perez, who brought him to the club from Lyon in 2009.Arsenal’s initial budget for a bid was £35m but they would now be prepared to spend as much as £45m to bring him to north London.

Yet the constant message from the Spanish capital has been insistent that Benzema, who is under contract until 2019, will stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for at least another season.

Wenger has identified Benzema as the kind of "exceptional" talent to improve his FA Cup winners and lead the line for Arsenal as they target a first Premier League title since 2004.

The Arsenal manager has long been a massive admirer of the France international and believes he is capable of leading his side to the title, especially in a team where he does not have to play second fiddle to Ronaldo and Bale.
Wenger has declined this summer to make moves for the likes of Jackson Martinez, Paulo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain in the hope that Benzema would become available.

Arsenal have always known that their ambitious move for Benzema would be difficult to conclude and Wenger is understood to be happy with his forward options if he cannot land an A-list striker.

Olivier Giroud has started as the Gunners’ lone forward for their first two Premier League fixtures of the season and scored a superb scissor kick in the 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Wenger prefers to play with one central striker and also has Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck who can operate in that role.

    Otamendi undergoes Manchester City medical

    1797882_heroa.jpg

Nicolas Otamendi is at the Wilmslow hospital to complete his medical ahead of a £31.7m move to Manchester City, Goal has learned.

The Argentina centre-back has agreed personal terms with City after Valencia agreed to a deal which, at €45m going by current exchange rates, is short of the €50m they had been holding out for all summer.

Details of City's intent to seal a deal for the 27-year-old emerged during Sunday's 3-0 victory against Chelsea, with Eliaquim Mangala purported to be heading to Mestalla on loan.

But after the Premier League leaders made it clear the Frenchman, himself signed for £41m just last summer, would not be going anywhere, a straight cash deal was agreed despite Jason Denayer and Marcos Lopes being touted as alternative options during negotiations.

Confusion shrouded proceedings on Tuesday morning when it was reported in Spain that Otamendi was back in training at Valencia, while several British outlets insisted he was still in Manchester having travelled to England alongside agent Jorge Mendes on Monday night.

But with Otamendi now at Wilmslow, the same hospital where Fabian Delph and Raheem Sterling have been through their paces, the big-money move will be soon confirmed.

Official confirmation of the deal could be delayed slightly, however, given that Valencia are preparing for their Champions League qualifier against Monaco on Wednesday evening.

Man City prepared to smash their transfer record to finally end De Bruyne saga

    564781_heroa.jpg

Manchester City officials will meet with their Wolfsburg counterparts on Wednesday in a bid to finally seal a £50 million deal for Kevin De Bruyne, Goal has learned.

City have been trying to sign De Bruyne all summer but have been met with fierce resistance from his club, who are holding out for a huge fee for the 2014-15 Bundesliga player of the season.

Indeed, after signing Raheem Sterling for a potential £49m in July the Premier League leaders would be required to break their transfer record for a second time this year.

Having been reluctant to go over £50m initially, City could now surpass that figure with the inclusion of several performance-related add-ons, as with the Sterling transfer, and they are hopeful they can conclude negotiations in the coming hours.

De Bruyne appeared to rule out the possibility of a move away from the Volkswagen Arena on Monday evening when he was quoted as saying "I will stay at Wolfsburg."

But it quickly emerged that he had been asked to repeat the words in German by the host of a Sport Bild awards ceremony, where he received his 'star of the year' prize, and his agent moved quickly, and angrily, to stress that the Belgian's future remains up in the air.

"I am furious by what has happened tonight," he said. "No decision has been made on Kevin's future in this transfer window. We have yet to find out if Wolfsburg has reached any agreement with a club."
The faux pas has caused embarrassment for both De Bruyne and Wolfsburg and Goal understands it has helped to expedite the process; depending on Wednesday's planned talks City believe they could be flying back to England with the playmaker in tow.

City are also ready to announce the signing of Valencia centre-back Nicolas Otamendi for £31.7m after wrapping up talks on Tuesday, with the defender having arrived in Manchester to complete the second part of a medical.

Otamendi had been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid earlier this summer but City emerged as the front-runners for his signature in recent weeks and have concluded a straight cash transfer since Sunday's 3-0 victory against Chelsea.

A loan move for Eliaquim Mangala had been part of negotiations over the weekend but his employers insisted he would not be going anywhere, and after Jason Denayer and Marcos Lopes were put on the table both clubs agreed upon a cash only deal, which at €45m falls €5m short of Valencia's publicly-stated asking price.

With the Spanish club preparing for their Champions League qualifier against Monaco on Wednesday evening, official confirmation of the deal could be put back until Thursday.

Writing off Dortmund a mistake, says Watzke

    pierre-emerick-aubameyang-henrikh-mkhitaryan-borussia-dortmund-bundesliga-15082015_1dzgax5ip6aqs1n81ugrgwi5rr.jpg

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has stressed that BVB were always among the title candidates for 2015-16 and that people were wrong to write them off.

The Signal Iduna Park side endured a difficult 2014-15 campaign in which they were battling against relegation in the first half of the season before eventually finishing seventh in the table.

And with successful coach Jurgen Klopp leaving BVB, many questioned their ability to challenge teams such as Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach and Schalke.

Dortmund impressed on matchday one, though, as they hammered Gladbach 4-0 and Watzke is confident they can return to the Champions League, even if he feels Bayern remain the team to beat.

"Bayern are and remain the main favourites to win the Bundesliga title," Watzke told Bild .

"As for the Champions League places, people who wrote off Borussia Dortmund made a mistake. We were always there.

"Even if nobody really could have imagined we would put in such a performance against Gladbach.

"But we have two important games coming up now. The mood was jubilant after last season's win over Schalke as well, but we then fell deep again after that."

Dortmund meet Odd on Thursday in the Europa League, before returning to Bundesliga action against Ingolstadt on Sunday.

    Pique handed four-match ban

    gerard-pique-barcelona-athletic-bilbao-supercopa-17082015_183t928ul4lxv1gny99kvlb1wo.jpg

Barcelona will have to make do without the services of Gerard Pique for the next four matches after he was handed a hefty suspension by the Spanish football federation (RFEF) following his red card against Athletic Bilbao in Monday's Supercopa de Espana second-leg draw.

The Spain international was dismissed around the hour mark following a verbal tirade at a linesman over the absence of an offside flag against Aritz Aduriz.

Referee Velasco Carballo's claimed in his post-match report that Pique shouted "I s*** on your w**** mother" at his assistant, an indiscretion for which the centre-back could have been banned between four and 12 games.

The 28-year-old came out on Tuesday to apologise for his behaviour, although he insisted he did not utter any of the words mentioned in the referee's report, while Barcelona also protested Pique's innocence.

The RFEF was not impressed by the Catalans' protests, though and has decided to hand the defender a four-game ban.

Pique will consequently miss the Liga encounters with Athletic Bilbao, Malaga, Atletico Madrid and Levante.

He could return to match action in the away game to Celta de Vigo on September 23.

Pique's absence leaves Luis Enrique short of options in defence, with Thomas Vermaelen, Jeremy Mathieu, Marc Bartra and Javier Mascherano as his only remaining alternatives at centre-back.

    Lavezzi agent denies Inter rumours

    ezequiellavezzi-cropped_46lm87jqcb371vwl16cuqxtvi.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi's agent Alejandro Mazzoni has stressed Inter have not made a move for the Argentina international.

The Argentina international scored eight league goals for the French champions last season, but only 19 of his 31 Ligue 1 appearances were as part of the starting XI.

Lavezzi is rumoured to be interested in a return to Serie A, where he previously played for Napoli, and reports in Italy suggested Inter are interested in striking a deal.

However, the 30-year-old's representative said he is unaware of any interest from San Siro.

"I don't know anything of Inter asking [about] or looking at Lavezzi," he told FCInternews.it.

"I haven't read what the Italian tabloids wrote in the last few days. I'll say this again, I know nothing of Lavezzi going to Inter."

Lavezzi has a contract with PSG until June 2016.

Lallana calls for Liverpool show at Arsenal

    adamlallana-cropped_ez3pwul3258w13fx720fvtv33.jpg

Adam Lallana has been impressed with the fight Liverpool have shown in their start to the season, but urged the team to put on a "show" against Arsenal.

Liverpool endured a disappointing 2014-15, finishing sixth having come runners-up to Manchester City in the previous campaign.

Brendan Rodgers' men have started the new Premier League season in solid, if unspectacular, fashion with 1-0 wins against Stoke City and Bournemouth.

Midfielder Lallana is keen to continue the winning trend in Monday's visit to the Emirates Stadium, but wants the team to put in an improved performance.

"Six points out of six and two clean sheets - that’s massive for us confidence-wise," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"People asked questions about our mentality and our fighting spirit last week at Stoke. We showed that there and we took it into the Bournemouth game. Sometimes you have to win a game 1-0. It was massively important for us.

"We know there's room for improvement and we're working hard in training to achieve that. But I also think it's important to see this side of us.

"There's no doubt we have a lot of ability in the squad and I think you'll see our performances improve over the coming weeks.

"We'll go to Arsenal with a gameplan to keep this run going. We've got a full week to prepare for Arsenal now. Hopefully we can go there and put on a good show.

"They are always difficult games against the top four. They are good teams. Arsenal will be tough but we have a week to prepare for it."

Zidane will be next Real Madrid coach - Fernandez

    carlo-ancelotti-zinedine-zidane_fubropfwjloc1551lnnxfgftf.jpg

Luis Fernandez has backed Zinedine Zidane to take over at Real Madrid when Rafael Benitez 's tenure as coach comes to an end.

Benitez was appointed as the replacement for Carlo Ancelotti in June following the Italian's dismissal in May - a year after he guided Real to their 10th Champions League title.

Zidane, who won a league title and scored the decisive goal in the Champions League final in 2002, worked as Ancelotti's assistant for a year before moving to his current role as coach of the reserves.

And Fernandez, who enjoyed managerial stints at Athletic Bilbao, Espanyol and Real Betis and is currently in charge Guinea's national side, was disappointed by the decision to part company with Ancelotti, but feels Madrid are preparing to eventually hand the reins to Zidane.

"I would have preferred Carlo to stay," Fernandez told Omnisport. "The season before last, Madrid won the 10th Champions League. They were competing against a great Barcelona team, a great Lionel Messi.

"I was disappointed that he left the club. I would have liked him to stay at the club.

"Benitez doesn't have the same style. They prepare everything for Zizou, who I think will be the next Real Madrid coach."

'This is so special' - Kovacic elated to join Real Madrid

    mateo-kovacic-real-madrid-unveiling-19082015_hnuvw8g1rxvr17ze8slpz0v30.jpg

Mateo Kovacic has spoken of his delight at joining Real Madrid, hailing it as the "greatest club in the world" and admits he is expecting great things of himself and the team.

The 21-year-old completed a €35 million move from Inter on Tuesday and was unveiled to the media and Madrid supporters at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

And in his first words as a Blancos player, he insisted that he can fit in anywhere in Rafael Benitez's midfield.

"I'm at the greatest club in the world and this is so special," he told reporters. "I expect a lot from myself and the club.

"I'm not the one who will decide which position I play, but I'm comfortable in the defensive midfield role. It's the coach's decision.

"I talked with Benitez when I met him when he was at Napoli and I'm so happy to work with a great coach like him."

Kovacic was also full of praise for his team-mates, insisting Cristiano Ronaldo is the club's best player and stating that he cannot wait to team up with fellow Croatian Luka Modric.

"Luka is a great friend. He is a great player and i'm so happy to share locker room with him. [Ronaldo] is the greatest player in the world for me, but each player has his own characteristics.

"All the players here are incredible, but for sure Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest and the top scorer for Real Madrid. It is an honour to be in this team with these players."

The midfielder admitted that the move came very quickly for him and stressed he was happy at Inter, despite the team's struggles over the last two seasons.

"There was an offer and the clubs reached an agreement, I didn't have much to decide. I'm so happy with this transfer.

"I'm not disapponted about my Inter experience. There are hard moments in football and life. Inter is a great club and i'm sure that they will be great again soon."

:(Chelsea hijack Manchester United bid for Pedro

    1770702_heroa.jpg

Chelsea are now in pole position to sign Barcelona forward Pedro after making a late bid to hijack Manchester United’s move for the Spaniard, Goal understands.

Pedro travelled to London on Wednesday morning to hold talks with Chelsea ahead of a €30 million move, and personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle to completing the deal.

United have pursued Pedro for much of the summer but the Spaniard is understood to have become frustrated with the Red Devils' unwillingness to match Barcelona’s asking price of €30m, while conversations with close friend and former team-mate Victor Valdes have left him wary of Louis van Gaal’s management style.

Jose Mourinho is a long-time admirer of the 28-year-old, who can play anywhere across the frontline, and Diego Costa's sluggish start to the season has convinced him that his Chelsea squad needs another goal threat. The Premier League champions are so far the only club to indicate that they are happy to meet Barcelona's asking price.

Pedro's change of heart will be a big blow to Van Gaal, who is looking to bolster an attack presently over-reliant on Wayne Rooney following the departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao. United came tantalisingly close to sealing a deal for the 28-year-old prior to Barca's two-legged Spanish Super Cup clash with Athletic.

Last week Van Gaal admitted that Pedro is precisely the kind of fast, penetrative forward United need, but the club's decision to play hardball with Barcelona over price has alienated the player.

Pedro's push to leave Camp Nou after seven trophy-laden years in the first team is borne out of his desire to be a key player at a top club and the strength of Chelsea's interest has convinced him he will enjoy such status at Stamford Bridge.

It is also understood that - despite numerous media reports - Manchester City never harboured a serious interest in signing Pedro, having already acquired Raheem Sterling and identified Kevin De Bruyne as a top target this summer.

Pedro U-turn leaves Van Gaal & Man Utd embarrassed again

    1798402_heroa.jpg

And then there were three. Hat-tricks against Barcelona are rarities but Manchester United have a treble of sorts involving the European champions.

For the third successive summer, their attempts to sign a player from the Nou Camp have come to naught. Indeed, on each occasion, a United manager has remained unconvinced of the merits of one who has shown his class in Catalonia. First it was Thiago Alcantara, who headed to Bayern Munich as David Moyes dithered. Then, in 2014, Moyes’ target Cesc Fabregas went to Chelsea as Louis van Gaal opted not to bid for the midfielder.

Now Pedro seems set to follow suit. United’s interest in the winger has ended. The decision, once again, was Van Gaal’s. United knew of the £22 million release clause in Pedro’s Barcelona contract. The fact that, in weeks of weighing up whether to sign him, they never opted to activate it, is a sign that Van Gaal continued to harbour reservations; ones which, evidently, Jose Mourinho does not share about a World Cup winner with 22 major pieces of silverware and 99 Barcelona goals to his name.

Whenever United miss out on a player, as they often have done in the last three years, the natural impulse of many has been to blame Ed Woodward. Yet if United have made a mistake this time, it is the manager’s, not the executive vice-chairman’s. And certainly there is a risk attached for United.

The danger is that an enemy is strengthened while United retain the same personnel in a department of the side where there is a need for greater firepower. Clubs should never buy a player simply to stop a rival purchasing him but the worst-case scenario for United is that Pedro powers Chelsea to the title. Van Gaal cuts a decisive figure but took a month to make his mind up about a triple Champions League winner. Mourinho has acted more swiftly.

Van Gaal admitted last week that he liked Pedro and believed the Spaniard had the qualities, of speed and creativity, which he has argued they require since Angel Di Maria was sold. Now the argument has changed. Now the case is that Memphis Depay, whose arrival was arranged three months before Di Maria’s departure, was his replacement. The Dutchman was a revelation against Club Brugge on Tuesday but the burden on younger shoulders has grown.

It is as well United have made a statement on the pitch this week. Others have been decisive off it. Manchester City are closing in on Nicolas Otamendi and while United face the reality they have failed to sign a centre-back this summer.

One who Van Gaal did definitely want, and bid €40 million for, has eluded his grasp. Sergio Ramos signed a new contract at the Bernabeu and, so far, United’s attempt to play hardball with Real Madrid over two players has backfired.

David de Gea is still at Old Trafford but as long as the Spaniard sits in the stands, United cannot benefit from the unsettled goalkeeper’s presence. The likelihood is that that their reigning Player of the Year will leave on a free transfer next summer and, rather than compromising on a smaller sum, United’s stance of demanding a world-record fee for a goalkeeper will end up costing them millions.

It leaves United in a strange position. Van Gaal has spent some £230 million in 15 months but United have not improved three key positions of the team. Sergio Romero’s dodgy distribution does not necessarily make him a poor stand-in for De Gea, but nor have there been enough indications he looks like a long-term first choice.

The notion that a defensive leader, a Ramos or a Mats Hummels, would be signed, has been shelved; Plan B incorporates the use of Chris Smalling and a reinvented Daley Blind at the heart of the defence. The only specialist centre-back Van Gaal has bought, Marcos Rojo, now looks a back-up.

In attack, meanwhile, Wayne Rooney reigns unchallenged while Van Gaal has not bought an alternative. Radamel Falcao may be a busted flush, but the sale of Robin van Persie deprived United of a forward who, even after successive underwhelming seasons, nonetheless scored 58 goals in three years on their books. He has not been replaced.

A manager who invariably talks of “balance” may not have a balanced squad. A chief executive who excels at balancing the books is seeing his manager choosing not to spend much of the money he generates and not to recruit footballers with stardust United want. Woodward had indicated that United had another £150 million transfer budget this summer. There is a very real possibility that United will not sign anyone else and their outlay only stands at £78 million. They have recouped £55 million of that in sales.

The resident Galactico, Di Maria, beat at a hasty exit as United made a £15 million loss on him. Old Trafford still does not look the destination of choice for superstars, Bastian Schweinsteiger apart. There are reasons to believe each of their four main buys – Matteo Darmian, Morgan Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Depay – will prove astute acquisitions, but the problem is what United have not done. They have not made the giant stride forward their budget allowed them to.

They do not have a team that looks like the finished article. And they do not have Pedro, a finisher who should add goals to Chelsea.

Juventus close to Alex Sandro signing and abandon Draxler pursuit

Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta claims the Turin side could wrap up a deal for Porto left-back Alex Sandro by Wednesday evening, but admits the club will drop their pursuit of Schalke's Julian Draxler.

With current left-back Patrice Evra entering the twilight of his career, Alex Sandro is seen as the perfect replacement, though the Bianconeri's wish to sign a new attacking midfielder – the role earmarked for Draxler – remains far from resolved.

“I think we can close a deal for Alex Sandro on Wednesday,” Marotta told reporters.

“We've pretty much abandoned negotiations for Draxler for a number of reasons, but we're still looking for someone to play behind the strikers.

“We've got 10 days to find a player other than Draxler and wrap things up with Alex Sandro.”

Juve had entered negotiations with Schalke over the Germany international, but were unsuccessful in their bid and Marotta admits they do have other options.

"I don't know if Borussia Dortmund would sell Mkhitaryan," he replied. "Ilkay Gundogan was a target, but I don't think it's feasibile.

"Maybe Cuadrado will be on the market. We're looking for someone with different characteristics, but we have 10 days to fill the gap in midfield, so we'll see."

At the very front of Juve's attack, however, the club director is happy with the signings of Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic, who were signed to fill the void left by Carlos Tevez.

“We really wanted to sign both of them,” Marotta went on. “We had to sign players with real quality to replace a talent like Tevez.

“But I think we've done that with these two players.”

Barcelona to appeal Pique four game ban

Barcelona have confirmed that they will appeal the four match ban given to Gerard Pique following the red card he received in his side's Supercopa de Espana second-leg against Athletico Bilbao on Monday.

Referee Velasco Carballo's claimed in his post-match report that Pique shouted "I s*** on your w**** mother" at his assistant during the 1-1 draw at Camp Nou which saw Athletic Bilbao win 5-1 on aggregate to lift the trophy.

Pique apologised for his attitude towards the linesman, but insists he did not insult him and so the club have decided to appeal the suspension.

"Barcelona will appeal to the Appeals Committee against the four match ban handed to Gerard Pique for his red card in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic on Monday," a statement from the Blaugrana read.

"The Club has a period of 10 days to present their appeal.

"In the appeal, the player, just as he has repeated on various occasions, will point out that he did not address the referee’s assistant in the terms recorded in referee Velasco Carballo’s match report."

:baffled::oo:Manchester United make move for Mane

    1718502_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have turned their attentions to Sadio Mane after Chelsea hijacked their move for Barcelona forward Pedro, Goal understands.

United are understood to have made contact with Southampton last week and lodged a formal bid for the Senegal winger after pulling out of a deal for Pedro, paving the way for the 28-year-old to complete a move to Stamford Bridge.

Mane joined Southampton from Red Bull Salzburg last summer and scored 10 times, including the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history during the 6-1 demolition of Aston Villa in May, and the south coast club are determined for him not become the third high-profile player to leave St Mary’s for Old Trafford in just over a year.

Louis van Gaal made Luke Shaw the most expensive teenager in world football at the time by paying £27 million for the England left-back last summer and splashed out £24m for Morgan Schneiderlin’s services last month.

Despite Memphis Depay’s bright start to his United career - the former PSV forward scored his first two goals for the club in Tuesday’s Champions League victory over Club Brugge - Van Gaal remains keen to bolster his attacking options having sold Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce and opted not to turn Radamel Falcao’s loan move into a permanent one.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward flew to Barcelona in midweek but the club insist his presence was not solely linked to the Pedro deal and the decision to drop their interest in the Spain international was the manager’s.

Chelsea, who have begun the defence of their Premier League crown with just one point from the opening two games, have moved decisively in showing their willingness to activate Pedro's £21.5m buyout clause and are expected to formally announce his signing later this week.
