Di Maria, Ibrahimovic & Verratti to miss PSG game

    angel-di-maria-nasser-al-khelaifi-lille-paris-sg-ligue-1-07082015_q1kihlnlxz8m1qzarpfebjx9w.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain are without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Angel Di Maria and Marco Verratti for Friday's Ligue 1 game against Montpellier.

Di Maria is still to make his debut for his new side following his move from Manchester United as he continues to struggle with a hamstring injury, while Ibrahimovic is recovering from a knee problem.

Laurent Blanc had suggested in his pre-match press conference that the Argentine could be included in the squad, but he has since been left out of the panel that will travel to Montpellier.

While Blanc will be happy to welcome centre-back Marquinhos back to the side, he will be disappointed that Verratti has picked up a hip injury, while Gregory van der Wiel is also one of those absent from the group.

Meanwhile, Lucas Digne has also been left out, which Blanc had already confirmed as the defender looks to complete a move to Roma before the end of the transfer window.

Jovetic: Inter will return to Champions League

    stevan-jovetic-cropped_1eg7239p24eh91tc9seud7qall.jpg

Stevan Jovetic is confident Inter can end their exile from the Champions League by sealing a top-three finish in Serie A this season.

The three-time champions of Europe have not participated in club football's elite competition since the 2011-12 campaign, when Marseille knocked them out in the last 16.

League finishes of sixth, ninth, fifth and eighth over the last four Serie A seasons have signalled a power shift in Italy, with Juventus replacing Inter as the dominant force, and striker Jovetic, who joined this summer from Manchester City, has been recruited by Roberto Mancini to help revive the club.

"I think we can achieve a third-placed finish," said Jovetic, who joined from Manchester City last month.

"There are lots of good sides in the league but we have a strong team.
"There’s always pressure in football. I’ve felt it everywhere I’ve played, but I just focus on performing well. I’d say that it adds extra motivation.
"Despite my difficulties in England it was a very important experience and I’ve come back more mature. I had a couple of injuries at the start, and then when I did play well I’d always be subbed off.
"When I was left off the squad list for the Champions League I knew it was time to change clubs."

Jovetic's claim is likely to raise a few eyebrows given that Inter have endured a tough pre-season campaign, suffering defeats against Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Real Madrid and Galatasaray, as well as a goalless draw with AEK Athens.

Mancini's men failed to score during those five games, but Jovetic - who netted in a 2-0 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao in Parma - is unconcerned.

He said: "We've trained well and the friendlies have really helped, despite the results. We're ready."

On joining Inter, he added: "I've spoken with Roberto Mancini. I can play in a few positions and have felt good where I've played thus far.

"I don't want to set a target doe how many, but I'm sure I'll provide lots of goals and assists."

I'm a fighter, Otamendi tells Manchester City fans

    nicolas-otamendi-argentina_7t9mvgv63asz13fhmyogtubd1.jpg

Nicolas Otamendi has told Manchester City fans to expect a fighter who gives everything on the pitch after completing a move worth around €45 million (£31.7m) from Valencia on Thursday.

The Argentina international is City's fourth summer signing and first overseas arrival at the Etihad Stadium, though the club remain determined to add Wolfsburg playmaker Kevin De Bruyne to Manuel Pellegrini's squad before the transfer window shuts.

And as he prepares to battle Vincent Kompany, Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis for a starting spot at the heart of Pellegrini's defence, Otamendi - who watched from the stands as City demolished Premier League champions Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday - insists he is confident that supporters will quickly warm to him.

"On the pitch, I am a player with a lot of personality," he told City's official website. "I like to have all the lines well organised in defence to allow the midfielders and strikers to attack without worry. I like to keep defensive order in the team.

"With the important players we have in attack, it’s a big help to stay ordered at the back to avoid conceding goals. I am a player who loves fighting for every ball, I try to play hard to win every ball. That’s something basic for a defender. I give all I have in every game.

"Kompany is one of the best centre-backs in the world, Demichelis is here because he’s a great player, Mangala…. They are players that every team in the world would like to have and they are here.

"There will be a healthy competition to be in the starting XI, but that’s beautiful thing in football: you compete healthily with your team-mates."

Pochettino keen to increase Tottenham's attacking options

    mauriciopochettino-cropped_qulxclefrg62167uhlpcn002e.jpg

Mauricio Pochettino is relaxed about his striker shortage at Tottenham, but is determined to bolster his squad before the transfer window closes.

With Emmanuel Adebayor out of favour with the Argentine, Tottenham only have two forwards - Harry Kane and Clinton N'Jie – available ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Claudio Ranieri's in-form Leicester City.

Spurs, who wasted a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home against Stoke City last weekend, had a bid rejected by West Brom for Saido Berahino earlier this week but Pochettino remains calm about their situation in attack.

"I think it's obvious we need to add some more players in our offensive positions," Pochettino told reporters.

"We have different targets, this is private, but the chairman and the club is working hard to bring in the new player in this position.

"But I am happy with my squad. We have played the last two games at a very good level.

"I'm not worried about the future. Our situation is good. We have time to bring [in players], Chelsea have signed Pedro, Arsenal still nothing, but we have brought in four players in this window."

Mourinho key to Chelsea move, says Pedro

    1798822_heroa.jpg

Pedro says Jose Mourinho was key to his move to Chelsea having previously been close to joining Manchester United.

The 28-year-old arrived from Barcelona in a deal worth up to £21.4 million (€30m) earlier on Thursday after the Premier League champions had hijacked the Old Trafford outfit's own attempts with an 11th-hour bid.

Pedro, who won 20 trophies during seven years in the Barcelona first team, hopes to continue that success at Stamford Bridge alongside international team-mates Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Cesar Azpilicueta.

"It's absolutely great to be here ... [Mourinho] is one of the main reasons why I’m here. He phoned me a few times and said he needed me to make the team stronger," he told the club's official website.

"He has won titles wherever he has been. I am really looking forward to playing under him and hopefully winning more titles.

"I spoke to Cesc. We are very good friends. I knew I would feel at home here and that was one of the main reasons why I decided to join.

"He's a great player, he's got brilliant vision and he links up really well with the other attacking players. I know we work well together on the pitch so I can't wait to play with him again.

"I have also played with Diego Costa and Cesar Azpilicueta before, for the national team, so I feel very comfortable here.

"I do everything possible to win. I have helped Barcelona win titles and I want to do exactly the same thing at Chelsea, because ultimately we are all here to win things."

    How Maradona spotted Otamendi quality

    nicolas-otamendi-manchester-city_1anr1u5b9tsxl1n6i07asvtbzv.jpg

As he sealed a £32 million move to Manchester City, Nicolas Otamendi must have looked back to his schooldays and felt immense pride and vindication, having seen all of his hard work and sacrifice pay off.Despite his obvious talent and natural ability, the Argentine’s journey from Buenos Aires to one of the Premier League’s top sides has not been straightforward.

As a member of the Velez Sarsfield youth system since the age of seven, Otamendi would make a quick journey home after school where his mother would pass him a bag of food. The youngster would then take three modes of transport before finally arriving at his side’s training ground – the trip took an hour and a half.

The very game he loved had forced him into a life of sacrifice, but when he was eventually plucked out of the youth system and stuck into the first team at 20-years-old, he found that the rewards were worth it.

The centre-back knew not to stop there, though, and his continued hard work brought him further recognition, as Diego Maradona recognised his potential after a game against River Plate. While he may not have been able to stop Cristian Villagra from hitting the net, Otamendi shone throughout that clash, coming up against a side which also included Radamel Falcao and Diego Buonanotte.

As Otamendi continued to impress at club level, Maradona could not resist any longer and finally brought him into the Argentina squad – handing him his international debut a year and 10 days after he made his first appearance at club level.

The defender became a regular throughout the qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and in the early days of his time with the Albiceleste he had his first major interaction with his coach.

On a flight to one away game, the coaching staff decided a select number of players could sit in the first class section. A shy and nervous Otamendi was one of the lucky few as his name was drawn out of a hat, prompting Maradona to shout out “Look at Otamendi, he just gets a call and he’s already flying in first class.”

The positives have been aplenty for Otamendi throughout his career, but he has had plenty of obstacles to overcome and critics to prove wrong. While his four years at Porto were enough for him to land a €12 million move to Valencia, he had not convinced Alejandro Sabella and was thus left out of the national team for World Cup 2014.Again, though, Otamendi’s fighting spirit shone through and he used the disappointment of that setback as fuel to prove he was capable of operating at the top level.

His last season at Valencia was incredible and his reputation was boosted even more by a solid showing at the 2015 Copa America in which he played all but one game as they lost out to Chile on penalties in the final.

Otamendi was subsequently linked with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Manchester United before sealing a move to City, and the Red Devils could rue losing out on the defender to their nearest rivals.

Louis van Gaal's side are in urgent need of a centre-back, but have now missed out on the 27-year-old as well as Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos.

Given Otamendi’s work ethic and thirst for improvement, it’s fair to say we still have not seen the best of a player who has spent his whole life working towards reaching the very top and achieving something great.

Odd 3-4 Borussia Dortmund: Mkhitaryan completes BVB comeback

    germany-only-henrikh-mkhitaryan-borussia-dortmund-jone-samuelsen-odds-bk-europa-league-20082015_13pmev7sk522s1vltlacn7lovk.jpg

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a late winner as Borussia Dortmund came from three goals down to beat Tippeligaen side Odd 4-3 in the first leg of their Europa League play-off qualifier at the Skagerak Arena.

Despite their fantastic start to life under new head coach Thomas Tuchel, Dortmund were shell-shocked as Jone Samuelsen gave Odd the lead after just 14 seconds.

After Shinji Kagawa had hit the crossbar, more terrible defending allowed Fredrik Nordkvelle to double the host's advantage, with Espen Ruud adding a thunderous third soon after.

However, two goals either side of half-time for Dortmund – who hit the woodwork four times – from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kagawa put the visitors back into contention.

Aubameyang's second levelled the scores with 15 minutes to go before Mkhitaryan's 83rd-minute header sealed a remarkable victory.

Tuchel's men kept a clean sheet in all four of their competitive games prior to the trip to Norway, but Dortmund were undone immediately as Samuelsen stole in at the near post to head home Rafik Zekhnini's cross.Dortmund almost equalised one minute later, Kagawa denied by the crossbar with a rasping drive from the edge of the box.

In a frantic opening, Nordkvelle fired a low effort at Roman Weidenfeller – who replaced Roman Burki in the line-up – after skipping through the midfield unchallenged.

But Dortmund failed to learn their lesson and were 2-0 down after 20 minutes as Nordkvelle, once again unmarked, latched onto Olivier Occean's pass before slotting calmly past Weidenfeller.

And the veteran goalkeeper was hapless once again as Ruud smashed in Odd's third two minutes later, the full-back finding the top-right corner from a 35-yard free-kick.

Mkhitaryan clipped the left-hand upright with a low shot from distance as Dortmund tried to forge their way back into proceedings, which they finally did when Aubameyang nipped in to prod home after Ilkay Gundogan's effort had been spilled by Sondre Rossbach.Dortmund then made the perfect start to the second half as Kagawa volleyed into the bottom left-corner of the net from Marcel Schmelzer's cross.

Tuchel's side continued to press and would have been level if not for a superb save from Rossbach, who tipped Aubameyang's sensational strike onto the right-hand upright and away from goal. However, Aubameyang finally had his second after 75 minutes, finishing low into the left corner after being found in the box by Schmelzer.

Gundogan then struck the bar with 10 minutes remaining before Kagawa's cross found Mkhitaryan, who duly headed home to complete the turnaround and spare Dortmund's blushes.

Southampton 1-1 Midtjylland: Rodriguez penalty saves wasteful Saints

    1809562_heroa.jpg

Jay Rodriguez scored his first goal since March 2014 as Southampton were held to a 1-1 home draw by Midtjylland in their Europa League play-off first leg, conceding a potentially costly away goal.

Former Southampton academy player Tim Sparv returned to haunt his old club as he broke the deadlock for the Danish side and, although Rodriguez found the net following his 16-month injury lay-off to restore parity, it proved another disappointing setback for Ronald Koeman.

Despite a shaky start in the Premier League, Southampton breezed through the previous qualifying phase with a 5-0 aggregate defeat of Vitesse, but it looked obvious from the outset that this was to be far more of a challenge.

Midtjylland never appeared overawed and eventually capitalised on Southampton's laboriousness with a potentially crucial away goal just before the break – Sparv providing a tidy finish from outside the area.

But their lead was short-lived as Rodriguez converted a penalty 10 minutes into the second period, with the home side producing a marked improvement after the break.

Saints ultimately failed to add to the score despite creating several chances and Midtjylland held on for a commendable draw, while also denying Koeman the perfect response to the weekend hammering by Everton.

There was nothing to suggest during the opening exchanges at St Mary's Stadium that this was a foregone conclusion, as the visitors looked organised at the back and sprightly going forward.

The first opportunity did fall to Southampton, though, as Steven Caulker headed James Ward-Prowse's free-kick just wide.

But Midtjylland, renowned for their own set-piece prowess, went close a few minutes later, as Southampton only partially cleared Kian Hansen's corner and Petter Andersson dragged wide from 20 yards.

The hosts were then fortunately bailed out by goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg in the 25th minute, the Dutchman palming away Erik Sviatchenko's seemingly goal-bound header after a launched Hansen throw-in.

Southampton struggled for craft in the final third and were generally restricted to efforts from distance, with Sadio Mane and Oriol Romeu forcing Johan Dahlin into comfortable saves in the final four minutes of the first half.

And Midtjylland took full advantage of their hosts' toothless showing on the stroke of half-time, as Sparv lashed an inch-perfect effort into the bottom-left corner from 25 yards.

Perhaps spurred on by some choice words courtesy of Koeman at the break, Southampton showed more urgency at the start of the second period than in the entire first half.

Caulker saw a goal chalked off for an aerial foul in the 51st minute and then the stooping Graziano Pelle brought Dahlin into action a few moments later with a header of his own.

Southampton were eventually celebrating with 56 minutes on the clock, as Hansen clumsily tripped Ward-Prowse in the area and Rodriguez coolly swept past Dahlin.

The goalkeeper caught the eye nine minutes later, though, palming a Caulker header over in spectacular style, before Matt Targett drilled agonisingly wide with just over 15 minutes to go.

Southampton continued to throw caution to the wind towards the end and Midtjylland almost caught them on the break, but Jose Fonte blocked Rilwan Hassan's powerful effort.

Maya Yoshida almost provided Southampton with a dramatic finish, but the defender's header in the sixth minute of stoppage time hit the post, leaving Midtjylland with the advantage going into the second leg.

    Muller: €100 million? I'm relaxed

    douglas-costa-fc-bayern-munchen-hamburger-sv-bundesliga-14082015_1bvz0hhj1eb1x1pkkb1xzcs1w9.jpg

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller says he's "relaxed" over reports of a possible €100 million move to Manchester United. The Germany international played under United boss Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford and his future has been the subject of continued speculation this summer.

But when asked about is supposed valuation, he said to the Bundesliga Aktuell television show: "It's basically crazy, the current numbers being talked about in football."That's just the nature of the business, though, therefore I'm very relaxed.

"In Dresden a fan recently approached me with a megaphone and said 'Hey Mr €100 million man, how much is your jersey worth?' I just smiled."Muller will be Bayern's third captain this season but said it was important every player makes his voice heard in the dressing room.

"Nothing changes for me. You grow year after year with responsibility and for me it's not important who has the armband, but that everyone on the pitch gives the right signals."

    Tuchel: Dortmund were mentally weak

    tuchel-praises-klopp_1rkdxs1vbp3yl11ls7bmr4voal.jpg

Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel accused his players of being mentally weak after they were forced to fight back from 3-2 down before winning 4-3 in the first leg of their Europa League play-off against Odd.

Tuchel's side were behind after just 14 seconds of a remarkable clash and had slipped to a three-goal deficit by the 22nd minute as the hosts split through Dortmund's defence with ease.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored either side of Shinji Kagawa's well-executed volley to restore parity after 75 minutes, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan headed home the winner late on.And although Dortmund's blushes were spared, Tuchel was disappointed with his side's dreadful start but claimed they could have won by more in the end.

"We weren't prepared for what happened at the start, mentally we were not strong enough," Tuchel said."I was horrified at how easy we fell and conceded the goals. We will need to be much better.

"But we showed morale in the second half, and I am pleased for that. In the end we deserved the win, and actually the score was too low on our part."

Koeman on Man Utd's Mane interest: Nobody is for sale

    ronaldkoemancropped_1esgcfkucut3lzu6dixctooa5.jpg

Ronald Koeman insists that Southampton will be selling no more key players this year, amid intense speculation linking Sadio Mane with a move to Manchester United.

The winger, who started Saints' 1-1 Europa League draw with Midtjylland on Thursday, is a target for Louis van Gaal after Pedro joined Chelsea, with United lodging a formal bid for the Senegal international last week.

Southampton have already lost Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin during the close-season and Koeman is keen to keep his star players at St. Mary's Stadium after a mass exodus of first-team player last summer.

"Nobody is for sale, we will do everything to keep the best players here," Koeman told reporters. "We want to continue with these players and that's the most important thing.

"This is the worst situation for smaller clubs. We have to deal with the rumours from the press and maybe [leaked] from Manchester United.

"No-one talks about the best players of [Manchester] City, United or Chelsea. It's not nice but everybody knows we don't sell any more players. We keep going – nobody is going away from Southampton."
