:love:Macedonia 0-1 Spain: Mata's lucky lob cements top spot for holders

    1892952_heroa.jpg

A fortuitous own goal handed Spain a valuable 1-0 win over Macedonia on Tuesday as they took another step towards reaching Euro 2016.

Juan Mata's eighth-minute cross came back off the crossbar and went in via the head of goalkeeper Tome Pacovski to secure a victory that puts Vicente del Bosque's side two points clear at the top of Group C.

Spain dictated most of the game in Skopje, but were unable to add a second, though they head into the final two qualifiers in confident mood.

David de Gea was recalled to the starting XI despite having missed all of Manchester United's season so far due to the intense speculation that surrounded his failed move to Real Madrid, while Diego Costa led the line for the European champions.

And it took Spain just eight minutes to take the lead, albeit with a huge slice of luck. Mata's free-kick from the right found its way back at the feet of the Manchester United man, and his right-footed cross looped up and onto the crossbar only to cross the line after deflecting off Pacovski.

Spain turned on the style a few moments later, with Isco and David Silva combining superbly to send Costa through, but the Chelsea striker could only fire into the side-netting.

Macedonia had De Gea troubled when Milovan Petrovic rifled narrowly over from close range before Silva saw a free-kick deflected wide.

Gerard Pique, who kept his place in the side despite more recent controversy concerning his reception from the Spanish faithful, thought he had won a penalty after he tangled with Kire Ristevski, but the referee awarded a foul against the Barcelona defender.

Dani Carvajal almost repeated Mata's earlier effort as his cross from the right cannoned off the crossbar, and Juan Bernat's follow-up was parried by Pacovski.

Ferhan Hasani almost drew the home side level just after the break as his free-kick flew narrowly over the top-right corner, before Isco fired just wide and Silva spurned a good chance as he failed to get the ball from beneath his feet when inside the area.

Spain continued to boss possession but struggled to create many meaningful chances against a disciplined home side, and Hasani was denied a clear shot at goal by a timely lunge from Sergio Busquets as Macedonia attacked on the break.

Del Bosque's side saw off a spirited late fight from Macedonia to secure the points and edge closer to a place in next year's tournament in France.

Record-breaker Rooney: Hodgson lets me play with freedom

    wayne-rooney-vs-switzerland-september-2015_1v0f33jlo6q0b1md4w6gbb16cc.jpg

England captain Wayne Rooney praised manager Roy Hodgson as the striker scored his 50th international goal to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton as the Three Lions highest ever goalscorer.

Rooney netted a second-half penalty as England overcame Switzerland 2-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifying match on Tuesday, having already equalled Charlton's record in the 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday.

And following the match, the England captain hailed Hodgson for helping him on the way to the record, speaking of his delight at finally surpassing Charlton's long-standing goal tally. "Since Roy's come in I've scored a lot of goals under Roy and I'm grateful for him for letting me play with the freedom which I enjoy," Rooney told ITV Sport.

"It's a great feeling [being England's record goalscorer]. Obviously I've known I've been close to it the last few England games to finally do it is a dream come true."As you've probably seen I was emotional out there so [it is] a huge honour, something I'm extremely proud of.

"I'm happy it's done and hopefully we can kick on from here and concentrate on the team and hopefully have success in the future."The England forward also admitted that there have been some testing times in an England shirt, but said that reaching the record was a dream come true.

"You play each game and each year as it comes really and I went through a spell round about 2008 where I didn't score for a couple of years I think for England," he added.

"It's right up there, if not the best [achievment]. Being the country's all-time leading goalscorer before the age of 30 is something I could never have dreamt of, and I'm just extremely proud of tonight."Rooney, who broke the record with a second-half penalty, indicated that he planned to hit the spot kick with as much power as he could muster, in the hope of finding the net.

"I knew myself it was a big moment for me and I just picked my corner and put my boot through it, to get as much power on it as possible and make it hard for the goalkeeper," Rooney continued."The goalkeeper got a touch on it but thankfully it had too much power so I'm grateful for that."

Rooney will go on scoring - Sir Bobby Charlton

    wayne-rooney-vs-switzerland-september-2015_1v0f33jlo6q0b1md4w6gbb16cc.jpg

Sir Bobby Chartlon has congratulated England captain Wayne Rooney after the striker became the nation's record goal scorer, and insisted that the 29-year-old will go on scoring for club and country.

Rooney netted the record 50th goal in the 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win over Switzerland, beating Charlton's tally of 49 strikes that had stood since 1970.

And Charlton praised the Manchester United striker for reaching such a landmark.

"I would like to congratulate Wayne on becoming England's leading goalscorer," Charlton told Manchester United's official website.

"It is a record that I am sure [Rooney] will hold for a long time, and it is clear to see that [Rooney] will go on scoring for [his] club and country for a long time to come."

Charlton, who was part of England's World Cup winning side in 1966, admitted he was slightly disappointed to no longer hold the record, but expressed delight that it was Rooney who finally surpassed the long-standing goal tally.

"I obviously cannot deny that I am disappointed that I now don't hold this record, however, I am absolutely delighted that it is Wayne, as captain of my beloved club and country, who now holds this record," the 77-year-old added.

"I have always been very proud to hold this record. Playing for my country was always an honour and a privilege and something I did with great pride."

:love:De Gea wants Man United place back

    david-de-gea-spain_15x12hk4d8irx1lct97v8eljpy.jpg

David De Gea admitted that he is now hoping to be afforded some game time at Manchester United after getting a run-out for Spain on Tuesday.

The goalkeeper has been consigned to the stands for the first four matches of the new Premier League season.
United boss Louis van Gaal said the 24-year-old was not in the right frame of mind to play because of the uncertainty surrounding his anticipated move to Real Madrid.

The proposed transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu ultimately collapsed on deadline day, leaving De Gea in an awkward position, given he must remain at Old Trafford until at least January.

Despite not featuring for United thus far this term, he was handed a start in Spain's Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia and the former Atletico Madrid man kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win for La Roja.

"I felt so good," De Gea told reporters after the win in Macedonia. "I hope that I now have some good fortune also with my club.

"The support I received have been so important. I have awesome team-mates."

Juan Mata, who scored the only goal of the game against Macedonia with a cross-cum-shot, was quick to hail De Gea for not allowing his problems at United affect his performance.

"De Gea hadn't so much work to do but he is always very focused," he said. "He's a good professional"

Meanwhile, Del Bosque added that he had no concerns about De Gea being rusty.

"We trust in all of players and, of course, De Gea," he stated.

"But, overall, we didn't play well. Our opponent was very good, focused, solid and intense."

Spain's victory in Macedonia means that they can seal their place at Euro 2016 by beating Luxembourg next month.

Mourinho gave me a kick up the backside and told me to run more - Varane

    raphael-varane-real-madrid_b2yvm66w68271kt91c0p00902.jpg

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has revealed how Jose Mourinho once gave him a "kick up the backside" by telling him to run more.

The Chelsea coach gave Varane his big break during his time in charge at the Bernabeu by playing him ahead of Pepe during his final season in charge in 2012-13.

But despite being a huge admirer of the centre-back, Varane says Mourinho knew exactly how to push his buttons to get the best out of him.

He told Le Journal du Dimanche: "During my second year at Madrid, Jose Mourinho gave me a kick up the backside. I wasn't doing well, I wasn't managing to do what he wanted me to out on the pitch.

"So he chided me, saying: 'Why don't you run in training?' My first reaction was to mutter, 'Oh come on...' But I knew he was right, I had more to give."

Varane praised Mourinho's man-management skills and added that he needs to be put under persistent pressure to avoid falling into the trap of complacency.

"Mourinho doesn't need to give long speeches," he continued. "He's direct and to the point. What he said to me was for my own good. Without regular pressure like that, I can tend to rest on my laurels."

The France international then remembered two encounters with Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane and former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson before he decided to join Madrid.

"Zidane called me and I asked him to call me back because I was studying for my baccalaureate. It's my relaxed nature that made me react like that. You have to be carefree to deal with so many things like that at a young age.

"But to be honest, after that call, my mind was elsewhere; it was hard to focus on revising! It was the craziest period of my life.

"I was getting ready for the baccalaureate, the phone was ringing off the hook, I visited the Real facilities, I met Alex Ferguson...Just imagine, I was doing exams and signing autographs for other students. It was surreal. I'm really proud that I passed."

United States 1-4 Brazil: Neymar comes off the bench to net brace in international friendly

    1894772hp2.jpg

Neymar's second-half double led Brazil to a 10th consecutive victory over United States as they stormed to a confident 4-1 triumph in a friendly at the Gillette Stadium.

The Brazil captain started among the substitutes but Hulk rose to the occasion, following up his winner in Saturday's 1-0 friendly victory over Costa Rica by lashing home inside the opening 10 minutes.

Brazil soon settled into a counter-attacking rhythm, using the pace of Willian and Douglas Costa to stretch United States effectively.

Neymar, who will miss Brazil's opening two World Cup 2018 qualifiers through suspension, only entered the fray for the second half but had an immediate impact, winning a penalty that he converted within six minutes of the restart.

Shortly after the hour-mark, Rafinha netted his first international goal and Neymar quickly followed up with his second to take his Brazil tally to 46, before Danny Williams scored a consolation for USA.

It only took nine minutes for Brazil to break the deadlock and Willian played a key role, surging to the byline before floating in a cross that came back off the upright.
The rebound fell kindly for Hulk and the striker rifled a powerful drive beyond Brad Guzan.

Four minutes later Jozy Altidore looked to restore parity with a near-post run to attack DeAndre Yedlin's cutback, but Miranda did enough to block the effort and Marcelo Grohe collected the loose ball.Injury saw Miranda replaced by Marquinhos midway through the half but USA continued to find it difficult to open up a resilient Brazil defence.

When an opening was eventually forged ahead of the half-hour mark, Michael Bradley produced a tame effort that failed to worry the goalkeeper.

Dunga's side still threatened on the break and Marcelo could have added to Brazil's tally on the brink of half-time, his venomous strike from the left stinging Guzan's palms. It did not take much longer for the second goal to come, though, and it was the introduction of Neymar that proved the catalyst.

Geoff Cameron felled the Brazil captain inside the box and he got the better of Guzan from the spot with 51 minutes played.Rafinha then grabbed the third 13 minutes later, showing great composure to roll the ball into the back of the net after some brilliant work in the build-up from Lucas Moura.

The Paris Saint-Germain man laid on another assist three minutes later, picking out Neymar who squeezed the ball inside the near post after cutting in from the left.
Rafinha came close to increasing Brazil's advantage but he fired wide of the upright from Fabinho's cutback.

Neymar almost rounded off a deadly display with a third goal, but he could only find the side netting with a free-kick from the top of the box.Williams grabbed a late consolation for USA, producing a sublime strike from 30 yards that Grohe could not stop.

Argentina 2-2 Mexico: Messi, Aguero lead comeback

    lionelmessi-cropped_15h3sun8a5ifb1i0ataq52r65u.jpg

Mexico surrendered a two-goal lead as Argentina scored twice late on to secure a 2-2 draw in an international friendly at the AT&T Stadium.

Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi struck in the dying stages in Texas as Gerardo Martino's men rallied to secure a draw. After using Messi from the bench in the 7-0 thumping of Bolivia on Friday, Martino deployed his talisman from the start in front of a packed house in Texas.

However, it was Javier Hernandez who was the first to get the crowd off their feet as he converted a cool first-half penalty to put Mexico ahead.

Moises Munoz was in fine form for much of the game, denying the number one side in the FIFA rankings time and again before Hector Herrera doubled his side's advantage.

The goalkeeper's 85th-minute blunder allowed Aguero to tap home what looked like a consolation goal but Messi popped up with a brilliant finish moments later to secure the draw.Argentina started brightly but were quickly exposed on the break, with the game's first opening falling to Hernandez within 10 minutes.

However, after being picked out with a lovely dink from Herrera, a loose touch let him down and enabled Nahuel Guzman to smother the ball.

Mexico were soon in the ascendancy but another chance quickly went begging as Andres Guardado ballooned a strike from the top of the box off Israel Jimenez's cross.Ricardo Ferretti's men were rewarded for their adventurous play in the 19th minute.

Nicolas Otamendi caught Raul Jimenez inside the box and Hernandez picked out the bottom corner with the penalty.Martino's side started to get more joy up against the opposition's five-man defence as the half wore on.

Messi, Marcos Rojo and Ever Banega all failed to hit the target from promising positions, while Angel Correa was denied twice by some brilliant goalkeeping from Munoz. There was still time before the break for Argentina to be caught on the counter-attack again.

Hernandez was not quite as composed this time around, looping his effort over both Guzman and the crossbar after being released through the middle.Argentina dominated possession with Messi increasingly involved, but gaps were opening in their defence.

After Munoz denied Carlos Tevez in the 56th minute, Raul Jimenez and Hernandez both came agonisingly close to improving Mexico's lead. The Mexico goalkeeper produced yet another save from Correa and with 20 minutes remaining his team-mates added their second.

Miguel Layun raced away down the left and found Herrera with his cross, the Porto man doing the rest by thumping the ball beyond Guzman. However, Argentina produced a late rally to come from behind and save face with a draw.

Munoz made an uncharacteristic error that allowed Ezequiel Lavezzi to latch onto a long ball and square for Aguero to finish, before the Manchester City man picked out Messi in the box four minutes later and the Barcelona star produced a mesmerising finish to ensure it ended even.

Barcelona can repeat treble - Xavi

    xavi-barcelona_jbldi24kkd3fzjsf3srwb9b3.jpg

Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi says the Spanish and European champions are capable of claiming back-to-back trebles.

Barcelona swept all before them last season, winning the UEFA Champions League, La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Xavi played a role in the remarkable feat and the 35-year-old - now plying his trade for Qatari club Al Sadd - believes Luis Enrique and Co. can repeat the three-trophy haul.

"They've got the team to do it. They've got a magnificent coach in Luis Enrique, who is a real perfectionist, very methodical and a good leader," Xavi said in quotes published by AS.

"And right now, Barca boast the best players in the world.

"It will be difficult to achieve but I wish, from the bottom of my heart that they go on to win the Champions League and every other success they can achieve."

Rooney goalscoring mark 'hard to beat' - Smalling

England captain Wayne Rooney will set a goalscoring mark that will be hard to beat, according to team-mate Chris Smalling.

Rooney became England's all-time leading goalscorer with his 50th international goal on Tuesday, breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's record with a penalty in a 2-0 win over Switzerland in Euro 2016 qualifying.

Smalling, also a club team-mate of Rooney's, said he expected the 29-year-old to add to his tally in a huge way.

"He's got no sign of letting up," he told reporters.

"I think when he finishes his career he's going to set a marker that's going to be very hard to beat."

Smalling played 90 minutes at Wembley, where Harry Kane opened the scoring before Rooney's late penalty.

The United defender said his shirt from the clash would be one he cherished.

"It's a massive honour and I'll be keeping my shirt to say that I was there when Wayne Rooney broke that record," Smalling said.

    'He's England's best EVER' - Football world reacts to Rooney's record-breaking strike

    1893202_heroa.jpg

England captain Wayne Rooney netted a penalty in the 2-0 Euro 2016 qualifying win against Switzerland to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton as the country's highest ever goalscorer.

Rooney had previously equalled Charlton's record with a penalty in the 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday, but had to wait until the 84th minute on Tuesday before steadying himself and blasting the ball past Yann Sommer in the Switzerland goal.

Harry Kane had previously put Roy Hodgson's side ahead with a powerful left-footed strike after 67 minutes, but Rooney's goal marked the occasion and made history in English football.

:baffled:Martial will flop at Manchester United, says Parlour

    anthonymartial-cropped_1ivb4fs25lj191lza4aoid7l98.jpg

Former England international Ray Parlour believes Manchester United have overspent on Anthony Martial and feels the ex-Monaco star will struggle to live up to the high expectations at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old completed a £58 million move to the Premier League on transfer deadline day, becoming the most expensive teenager in history.

Parlour, though, is not convinced the Frenchman is worth the hype, and believes he will prove to be a big-money flop.

"Will Martial succeed? I look forward to seeing him play, but I think it's going to be a miss, because the money they've spent is an unbelievable amount," Parlour told Sky Sports.

    "For a 19-year-old kid, he's not proven.

"If he proves to be like a Thierry Henry, which is what a lot of people are saying, then he could obviously be a great signing, but I think it is a massive gamble to take on a 19-year-old kid.

"With the money they've put out, I could be totally wrong, but I'm going to say miss on that one."

Martial could make his United debut in Saturday's Premier League encounter with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Hazard: Everybody wants to kill Chelsea this season

    eden-hazard-premier-league-west-brom-v-chelsea_fokpms78u8021wxa1ygn410lc.jpg

Eden Hazard has admitted that it is not easy being the reigning champions as everybody is desperate to beat Chelsea.

The Blues have failed to impress in the opening weeks of the 2015-16 campaign and currently sit 13th in the Premier League table with just four points from four games.

Jose Mourinho's men are already eight points behind early pace-setters Manchester City but the Belgium international remains hopeful they can successfully defend their title.

"It’s difficult to play as a champion because everyone wants to beat you, everyone wants to kill you," Hazard told Hypebeast magazine.

"We wear the gold badge and it's very good.

"We had a fantastic season last season, if we could do the same this season we'd be good."

Hazard, 24, has developed into one of Chelsea's undisputed key men since joining them from Lille and is keen to keep proving his worth game after game.

"Every day I learn. In training, in the game. It’s good playing big games, if you play against a big player you can learn a lot. You learn a lot every day. Every day I try to reach a better level," he added.

"This is my job, every day I try to score. Every game I try to score. I just want to be champion. I just want to be a champion and win everything like I did last season."

Spain won by chance - Del Bosque

    vicentedelbosque-cropped_e2qfbp0eswi81ggtqu94v6h2d.jpg

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque admits that his side won their Euro 2016 qualifier against Macedonia by chance on Tuesday.

The European champions stand one victory away from qualification for the tournament in France next year, having followed victory over Slovakia at the weekend with the 1-0 win in Skopje.

Juan Mata's fortunate lob bamboozled Tome Pacovski eight minutes into the Group C clash, with Spain now able to qualify with a victory over Luxembourg next month.

However, Del Bosque told reporters: "We have not played well, we won by chance.

"It's hard to explain but there was a great motivation for the first game and only a normal amount for the second.

"We have only scored the goal by chance. Once we got the goal we have stopped, we played slowly to feet and without any depth.

"We can not defend anyone, we played a little football but when it came to coordinating the three main issues of football - defending, creating and finishing - we have not done so."

David De Gea was preferred to Iker Casillas in goal - despite having been dropped by Manchester United recently following speculation of a move to Real Madrid that never materialised - and Del Bosque praised the 24-year-old.

"He is a mature guy and I had no fears that he would fail," Del Bosque added.

Neymar: Brazil are not a one-man team

    neymar-brazil-v-united-states_9vn0s4dkeu141bw1dhvnyq7sm.jpg

Neymar has insisted that Brazil are not a one-man team and is adamant they have plenty of options up front with the Barcelona star set to miss his country's opening World Cup qualifiers due to suspension.

Brazil beat Costa Rica 1-0 at the weekend before recording a 4-1 win over United States on Tuesday, with Neymar netting twice against Jurgen Klinsmann's men to take his tally for Brazil to 46.

Coach Dunga will have to make do without the services of the Barcelona attacker in next month's qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela following his red card at the Copa America, but Neymar feels that is no cause for concern.

"I think Brazil have great players who can replace any absence," he told reporters.

"Brazil has never been a one-man team. I can only congratulate the entire team for its fine performance in the past two games.

"Douglas Costa has been playing very well for Bayern Munich and Brazil. He did a great job together with Marcelo. They are great players who can make a difference."

Neymar also stressed that he always gives his all for the national team and is ready to help out Dunga whenever he needs him.

He added: "I'm here to help. I like to be on the pitch and I always want to play. I'm always available for the coach and when I play I have to give my best and try to score to help the team."
