Shaw to guide Martial at United

    lukeshaw-cropped_16vg8scf8maa218e6wy1i22jr6.jpg

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is eager to help big-money signing Anthony Martial settle in at Old Trafford.

Shaw, 20, was a big United signing last year, arriving from Southampton in a deal believed to be worth £30 million.

But he has been surpassed as the most expensive teenage signing in history after Martial's £36m move from Monaco.

And Shaw said he could guide Martial, telling the 19-year-old he needed to ignore all the talk around him.

"Of course I am always willing to help people no matter how old they are," he said.

"I know Anthony might find it a bit tough with everything that's going on with social media.

"We have great people at the club in terms of staff and players. We will all welcome him very well. He is a young player with a lot of potential. Hopefully we can help him.

"Obviously last season was very difficult for me. It was made hard with the injuries that I picked up. I didn't expect that to happen as much as it did. I think that is what knocked my confidence down.

"I never got fully fit, so whenever I was playing I wasn't at my best and I didn't feel at my best. Then you see the papers. I think I read too much of it last year. I tend to ignore it now.

"There are always going to be people doubting me and wanting to write bad stuff about me but obviously it is best just to ignore it and carry on playing the way I am."

Van Gaal: Man Utd will beat Liverpool... but WON'T win the title!

    louis-van-gaal-wayne-rooney-manchester-united_nh3bpbkvqpgj1u9k8r6ialaz4.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has ruled out winning the Premier League title this season, though he has vowed to beat Liverpool when the rivals clash on Saturday.

The Red Devils have taken seven points from their opening four domestic matches having spent in excess of £100 million over the summer on the likes of Memphis Depay, Anthony Martial and Morgan Schneiderlin.

Despite that, Van Gaal has played down the chances of the Old Trafford outfit winning a first title in three years and is instead targeting becoming English champions for the 21st time in 2016-17.

"No, maybe third or second place is realistic but I expect us to go for it next season," he said when asked whether United would win the title at a Q&A session for season ticket holders.

He added on their defeat to Swansea City last time out: "I am sorry, the defeat, was my fault. Don't worry, we will win on Saturday [against Liverpool]."

The former Netherlands manager also claimed United fans are the best supporters in world football due to them getting behind the team even if they are losing.

"At Barcelona when the team is losing fans wave their white hankies, Munich fans start whistling and at Ajax the fans call for the previous manager.

"Manchester United fans get behind their manager, they get behind their team. That is why United fans are the best in the world."

Austin: Manchester United never an option

    charlieaustin-cropped_1ew1pqz1l78la1j4l2776co5rr.jpg

Charlie Austin has stressed that a transfer to Manchester United during the close-season was never a realistic option.

The QPR striker was heavily linked with a move away from Loftus Road throughout the transfer window, following his fine performances in the Premier League last season 2014-15, and United were believed to be among the teams keen to sign him.Nevertheless, Austin has now made it clear that he never came close to a transfer to Old Trafford.

"No, that was never on the cards," the 26-year-old told talkSPORT. "Not that I was aware of."Austin then went on to reveal that he did reject another Premier League club, with Newcastle United and Crystal Palace also among his admirers.

"I turned down a move which wasn’t right for me and my family," he added. "I didn't feel it was right for me to go, so I stayed at QPR."

Austin has started the 2015-16 campaign in fine fashion, scoring four goals in five appearances to help QPR to fourth place in the Championship.

:)De Gea on verge of signing new Man United deal

David de Gea is on the verge of signing a new Manchester United contract and is also in line to return to action against Liverpool on Saturday, Goal understands.

The 24-year-old was set for a £29 million transfer to Real Madrid on August 31, but the Spanish club failed to complete the deal in time.

Madrid president Florentino Perez blamed United for the late arrival of paperwork, but added that any hope of signing De Gea this season had gone.

“We will certainly not sign De Gea in January. Madrid did its job as best it could,” he admitted to Cadena COPE.
After recovering from the disappointment of seeing his dream move collapse De Gea instructed his agent Jorge Mendes to explore the possibility of signing a new deal at Old Trafford.

The former Atletico Madrid star is now set to put pen to paper on a new long-term contract worth £200,000-a-week, a significant increase on his current salary. For United’s part, they are expected to include a release clause in the deal which would allow them to recoup the £29m fee they would have received from Madrid should the goalkeeper seek to leave the club next summer.

De Gea looks set to celebrate his new agreement with United by making his first club appearance of the season in this weekend’s crunch clash with arch-rivals Liverpool.

The Spaniard was overlooked for United’s first six games of the season after manager Louis van Gaal claimed his No.1 keeper had struggled mentally amid the uncertainty over his future.

But at training on Thursday De Gea took the role of main goalkeeper, and he is expected to do the same again on Friday ahead of a return to the starting XI at Old Trafford against Liverpool.

Sergio Romero has failed to convince during De Gea’s absence, despite conceding only three goals in six matches. The Argentine shouldered the blame for the 2-1 loss to Swansea in United’s last fixture, prompting Van Gaal to consider recalling the club's player of the year for the last two seaons.

De Gea has made 175 appearances for United since arriving from Atletico in 2011 and collected six caps for Spain since making his international debut in 2014.

    Vermaelen: Barcelona share Arsenal's philosophy

    thomas-vermaelen-barcelona_3wv3agc84xlrzca3z33x3q0w.jpg

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen says he sees many similarities between his former teams Arsenal and Ajax and the current Liga and European champions.

The Belgium international made just one appearance for Luis Enrique's side last term following his move from north London, as he endured a disappointing personal campaign plagued with injuries.

A graduate of the famous Ajax academy, Vermaelen moved to the Gunners in 2009 where he enjoyed a five-year spell, and the 29-year-old believes his old clubs have much in common with Barca.

"It's the same philosophy. They are teams who want to play football to entertain and to avoid long balls," Vermaelen told Barcelona's official website.

"[To] keep the ball on the ground, scoring as much as possible and create a lot of chances."

Having now recovered from a hamstring problem which forced him to spend a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Vermaelen is hoping to play a key role in the club's future success.

"I feel good and I hope to contribute my share to the new success of the team," he continued.

"Last year we won the treble. It will not be easy to repeat that, but we will certainly try. The team is largely the same and we are just as hungry as last season."

Gerrard backs Rodgers for England manager's job

    steven-gerrard-brendan-rodgers-liverpool_1tzt4oddsntsr19ef7cdsxkoqn.jpg

Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has backed Brendan Rodgers to be the next England manager.

Gerrard spent three seasons playing under the former Swansea City boss at Anfield before joining Los Angeles Galaxy, with some reports citing Rodgers' refusal to select the ex-England captain for key matches as a reason for his departure.

But the 35-year-old has now backed Rodgers to take over from Roy Hodgson should the current Three Lions manager leave following Euro 2016.

"Obviously when Roy’s had his time... Brendan Rodgers," Gerrard told the Daily Mail when asked who should be the next England coach.

"The way he plays would suit England. He would improve the possession football you need at international level.

"His man management is brilliant. At tournaments, in the heat, it is absolute torture and we need to keep the ball better.

"If you want someone who would get the team playing and the players would enjoy working with, it would be Brendan.

"Look, I can’t find any mistakes with Roy. He’s always been very good to me and is the right man to be the England manager now.

"I hope he has a very good European Championship and stays as long as possible but will be judged on what happens in the finals — he knows that himself.

"If it doesn’t go well I’m sure there will be changes, maybe then or whenever Roy’s time’s over Brendan can be in the mix — but who am I?"

Benitez a better coach for Real Madrid than Mourinho - Perez

    rafa-benitez-real-madrid-betis-la-liga-29082015_1pga9w8m5s1oq1aekpwzg1u7l8.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has no plans to bring Jose Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabeu, labelling Rafael Benitez "the best coach I've ever had".

Mourinho's Chelsea have started the Premier League in dreadful fashion with just four points from as many games, prompting rumours owner Roman Abramovich may lose patience with the Portuguese.

But if Mourinho does lose his current job, it looks unlikely he could turn to Madrid for rescue.

Under Benitez, Madrid have four points from two La Liga fixtures, while there is the not-so-small matter of Mourinho's final season at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he fell out with Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas, the media and fans.

Speaking to Cadena COPE , Perez said: "I have no intention of re-signing him [Mourinho], although he did give us an important step up in terms of quality.

"Before him, we struggled to make it past the last 16 in Europe and that wasn't good enough."

Perez added: "[Benitez is] the best coach I've ever had."

:yes:De Gea can deal with Manchester United pressure, says Mignolet

    david-de-gea-cropped_1s6vdsexeye9h1vrlhfyi6xs1d.jpg

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has little doubt David de Gea will become Manchester United's number one again in the not too distant future.

The Spain international had lost his starting berth to Sergio Romero due to the uncertainty over his future at United, with Real Madrid keen to lure him away from Old Trafford.

However, following the breakdown in his proposed transfer to Real, De Gea could make his comeback for Louis van Gaal's side in Saturday's match against the Reds.

"It is always difficult to tell what is going on looking from the outside," Mignolet admitted."The only thing I know is he is a very good goalkeeper who has proved himself to be very important for Manchester United over time. I think he has all the abilities to play again.

"The mental aspect of being a goalkeeper is very important so you have to go into the game with full concentration and confidence. That is a big part of your game and the Premier League is the most demanding league for any goalkeeper."When you are in a good frame of mind then the performance is going to be better. That is logical but I cannot say what is happening in his head.

"He played with Spain on Tuesday and he was ready then. He kept a clean sheet. But we have to look at ourselves and focus on our own jobs. It’s for Manchester United to judge whether he is in a good frame of mind to play."

:baffled::eek::no:Van Gaal is ALWAYS right - Litmanen

    jari-litmanen-ajax_1d6g1uk94fb210xnr5hvqjmao.jpg

Jari Litmanen is convinced Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal is the best manager in the world, insisting his former coach is "always right".

The retired Finnish attacker played under the Dutchman during a seven-year spell during the 1990's, in which the Eredivise side reached two Champions League finals and won four league titles.

Litmanen believes Van Gaal's knowledge of the game makes the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho look "little" in comparison, revealing how he improved considerably under his guidance.

"After a three-day training camp Louis van Gaal asked if I wanted to sit with him. He said he wanted me at Ajax and that was very convincing. I was ready for it, it felt good. This was the moment I was waiting for.

"I got offers from AS Roma, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid and Liverpool, before I chose Barcelona...Van Gaal has been the best coach of my career, he had confidence in me."

"Finland has shaped me as a footballer, but Van Gaal added the last fifteen, twenty per cent. He was demanding and honest. He saw everything.

"Pep Guardiola is good, Jose Mourinho also. But Van Gaal is the best coach in the world. In 25 years everyone will think so too."

Reports in recent days have suggested United players disagree with some of Van Gaal's training methods, with Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick having directly complained to the manager.

But Litmanen feels that eventually Van Gaal showed himself to be right even if there was some disagreement at first.

"It happened to me countless times that Van Gaal claimed something which I did not agree with. But when I saw it in practice, he seemed always to be right.

"Van Gaal was actually always right. He was and is always looking for perfection and puts fate in the hands of the players. Everyone is a little coach under Van Gaal."

    Don't question Benteke, says Carragher

    benteke-cropped_15t3jcspslidc1uogoqsd9qddb.jpg

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed new signing Christian Benteke to succeed on Merseyside.Belgium striker Benteke joined the Reds from Aston Villa in July, but has so far netted just once in four Premier League appearances.

Carragher sees no reason to question the 24-year-old, though, and believes he will eventually come good once he gets the service he needs.

"With Liverpool, it's chalk and cheese compared to what it was a few years ago in terms of the amount of goals scored when Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling were there, but two of those players have moved on now," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"Christian Benteke is the big-money signing that has been brought in to get those goals and, after the first four games, they haven't given him the service."However, despite the lack of prolificacy in front of goal, the former defender's confidence in their centre-forward remains undeterred.

"I wouldn't question Benteke," Carragher insisted. "I think he has done quite well in possession and he's got off the mark with one goal, but at this moment the creativity hasn't been coming from Liverpool and they certainly haven't given him enough service."

:cool:Mata: There's nothing bigger than Manchester United vs Liverpool

    juanmata-cropped_1q4kg8ch7f0ps1nq90grdqt1mx.jpg

Juan Mata believes Manchester United against Liverpool is "the biggest" encounter that English football has to offer.

The Premier League's bitter north-west rivalry resumes on Saturday at Old Trafford as both Louis van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers look to bounce back from damaging defeats to Swansea and West Ham respectively prior to the international break.

Liverpool beat United twice during Mata's first season with the club, before the 20-time champions responded in kind in 2014-15, and the Spain international admits they were all unforgettable games.

"You cannot know it if you don't live it from the inside," Mata told United's pre-match programme. "I knew when I came to England that United-Liverpool was one of the biggest games, but when you are inside it and part of it, you realise it is the biggest.

"The history of both clubs, the rivalry... you can feel it from the start of the week before the game, it's unbelievable. When we lost my first game against them it was very disappointing and you could feel it in the atmosphere and among the fans. But when we won 3-0 and also won at Anfield, it's something the people never forget, so it's always a massive game for us."

Mata scored in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford before his stunning scissor-kick volley sealed a 2-1 win at Anfield in the closing few weeks of the season, and the former Chelsea man admits it was a special moment."People I meet in the street always remember that game and it's something that will always be there for me," he added.

"The week after it, every day at the training ground everyone came up to me and congratulated me and you could feel that for all the staff at United and for every supporter around the world, that game was something special."

Courtois 'out for a long time' after knee surgery, confirms Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will require knee surgery and believes the goalkeeper with be out “for quite a long time”.

The Belgium international was hurt during a training session and will be replaced by new signing Asmir Begovic, who featured in two games earlier this season when Courtois was sent off and subsequently suspended.

Mourinho could not confirm the exact length of time Courtois is expected to spend on the sidelines, with the final verdict of the club's medical staff still pending.
“Courtois was injured in a training session with the goalkeepers. I cannot tell you much, but he needs surgery in his right knee, he will be out for quite a long time, but I cannot be specific as to how long he will be out,” said the Chelsea boss.

Mourinho admitted losing his first-choice goalkeeper was a blow but insists Begovic, who was signed this summer to replace Arsenal-bound Petr Cech, is a capable deputy.

“It's not easy to have the best goalkeeper injured, but it's easy to have one of the best to play, and we have Begovic,” he added.

“We have a top goalkeeper and Begovic will play.”

Messi skips Barcelona training ahead of crunch Atletico game

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has missed training to attend the birth of his son ahead of the Catalan outfit's crunch clash with Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

The Argentina international was granted to leave to attend the arrival of his second child on Friday, but manager Luis Enrique has confirmed he will be available to take on the Rojiblancos.

"Messi is available although he didn't train," he told reporters.

Luis Enrique is without Claudio Bravo and Dani Alves through injury for the clash with the Diego Simeone's side while Gerard Pique remains unavailable through suspension, though Sergi Roberto returned to training this week.

Barca travel to the Vicente Calderon Stadium having won both their opening Liga fixtures, with Atletico also holding a 100 per cent record.

Silva ruled out of Manchester City's trip to Crystal Palace

David Silva has been ruled out of Manchester City’s clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday due to an ankle injury.

The 29-year-old has started the season in fine form for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, scoring one goal and assisting four others in his opening four Premier League matches.

“Silva is out as I think it would be a risk for him to take another knock on his ankle,” Pellegrini said on Friday.

“I hope he will be OK for Juventus [on Tuesday].”

The City manager also confirmed that Bacary Sagna is available for his side’s trip to Selhurst Park despite suffering a minor ankle problem in France’s 2-1 win over Serbia on Monday.

Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Fabian Delph are also unavailable for the match against Alan Pardew's side.

Berahino in line for West Brom recall

    saido-berahino-west-brom_1v85v2qpkzwh21n8d6cyqd5z6b.jpg

West Brom boss Tony Pulis has confirmed that striker Saido Berahino is in line to return to action against Southampton.

The 22-year-old was the subject of several failed bids from Tottenham during the transfer window and later claimed he would not play under Albion chairman Jeremy Peace again.

Berahino has missed West Brom's last three matches but Pulis has revealed he could be back for Saturday's home clash with Southampton.

"I have no problems at all, he could play on Saturday," he told a press conference. "The respect Saido should have shown the football club and supporters wasn't there. He has to show them more respect.

"My big issue with Saido is he is immature at times in the way he reacts. Something he has done in the two windows since I've been here, his reaction has not been sensible.

"For him to want go to another club, to have the ambition to do that, I wish there were more players in my dressing room who had the ambition and quality to want to do that but the problem with it is the way he has gone about it and the way it has been managed.

"The way it has been managed has been poor."

Benitez: I have faith in Navas

    keylor-navas-real-madrid-betis-la-liga-29082015_12484ehaefcbp1lpzdgal8ivm8.jpg

Real Madrid coach Rafa Benitez has affirmed that he is happy to tackle the Liga season with Keylor Navas between the posts, following the club's failed efforts to bring David de Gea to Santiago Bernabeu.

De Gea looked set to join Los Blancos with Navas going in the opposite direction, but the move broke down in the final minutes of the transfer window, and the Spain international has now agreed a new four-year deal wih the Red Devils.

And despite missing out on De Gea, Benitez insists he is more than happy to have Navas available.

"Keylor knows that I have full confidence in him. I hope that he plays well, he already has my full trust," the former Liverpool coach told reporters.

"De Gea is a Manchester United player and I have shown I am satisfied with our goalkeepers. Keylor knows how much I rate him and that is crucial.

"I can guarantee you that De Gea will not be playing for us tomorrow and I am delighted wiith our goalkeepers.

Madrid take on Espanyol on Saturday, having begun the campaign to wrest La Liga back from Barcelona with a draw and victory, though they will be without injured duo Danilo and James Rodriguez.

But Benitez feels his side's strength in depth means they will have enough to see of the Catalan outfit.

"We can say that when [Danilo] left he was not injured. Not James either. Now we have two injuries. We have to do everything we can to look after our players.

"Sometimes we can look after them, sometimes we cannot, sometimes you are unlucky. We will try to find a solution for the future, but the problems with international games are always there."
