Luis Enrique explains why he benched Messi for Atletico Madrid clash

    1912622_heroa.jpg

Luis Enrique insists he left Lionel Messi out of Barcelona's starting side to face Atletico Madrid because of the need to protect the Argentine.

Messi was introduced in the 60th minute and scored the winner for the Spanish champions after Neymar had cancelled out Fernando Torres’ opener.

Messi played a full game and found the net in Argentina's 2-2 draw with Mexico in the United States on Wednesday, while forward missed training on Friday due to the birth of his second son Mateo.

“We offered a high level of performance and our defence was solid. Atletico had no chances and we won so I’m very happy,” Luis Enrique told reporters.

“I spoke with Messi and we both understood that he came back from a long trip and it was best not to risk him. He is very important for us and we want him in the best condition, we need to take care of him.

“We have a hard calendar and it is very important to beat a direct rival for the title."

Pellegrini angered by Dann tackle on Aguero

    manuel-pellegrini-on-injuries_1fyqcsvfkjw7z1gbtjmahbvbj4.jpg

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini felt Scott Dann should have been sent off for the challenge that forced Sergio Aguero out of the Premier League leaders' 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.

City had to wait until stoppage time to preserve their 100 per cent record in the top flight, with 18-year-old substitute Kelechi Iheanacho pouncing to net his first City goal on his second senior appearance for the club.

It is unlikely Iheanacho would have found himself in the action had Aguero not hobbled off after 24 minutes, the Argentina star failing to recover from a late tackle when centre-back Dann struck him heavily on the right knee.

Opposite number Alan Pardew believed the decision by referee Mike Jones to book Dann was correct, but Pellegrini was angered by a challenge he claimed was made "with bad intentions".

"Sometimes you must show a red card immediately because you know the intentions of the player – just to make you fall down or to go with bad intentions [as] in that case," said the Chilean.

"I don't like to complain about every decision as Alan did in the first minutes, but I think that's an important decision where you must complain."

Pardew and Pellegrini clashed on the touchline a few moments later when Yaya Toure made a similarly robust tackle on James McArthur.

Although the City boss remained critical of Pardew's overall conduct, he was keen to play down the incident.

"He came across my technical zone," Pellegrini said. "He was always complaining about every decision of the referee and I was angry because of that important decision [Dann on Aguero] – I thought the referee made that important mistake.

"That doesn't matter, it is part of the game. Nothing more."

City begin their Champions League campaign against Juventus on Tuesday and Pellegrini was unsure over whether Aguero will be able to feature.

"It's an important week and his knee, we will see if it can recover from now until Tuesday," he added.

"It's very difficult to answer you now. It is important how he recovers in the next hours. We'll see."

Ronaldo is the world's best, everyone knows that - Navas

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_xl4vblf5te3l18w0jvygvkuur.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo is the world's best footballer and everyone knows it, Keylor Navas said, after the Real Madrid star netted five in Saturday's 6-0 win over Espanyol.

The Portuguese attacker became Madrid's all-time top goalscorer in La Liga with his fourth goal, adding a fifth later on to bring his tally up to 230 in 203 games, overtaking Raul who is on 228 in 550.

While debate rages on about which player is superior - Ronaldo or Barcelona counterpart Lionel Messi - Navas believes the answer is clear.

"We all know he is the best in the world," he told reporters after the game. "He's an incredible player.

"We did a great job. The team comes out of this game in a very positive situation and that will give us confidence.

"We're managing to stop sides creating chances and I played with calm and confidence. I'm eager to work hard."

Referee: We got Bayern Munich penalty call wrong

    thomasmuller-cropped_ks42jtfidpis1w0rf3w3hc7ev.jpg

The referee who awarded Bayern Munich a late, decisive penalty in a 2-1 Bundesliga win over Augsburg has admitted that he got the decision wrong.

Thomas Muller converted the 90th-minute spot-kick to maintain Bayern's perfect start to the season, after Robert Lewandowski had cancelled out Alexander Esswein's first-half opener.

The penalty, described as a "joke" and a "catastrophe" by Augsburg head coach Markus Weinzierl, was awared after Markus Feulner was judged to have brought down Douglas Costa in the box.

And, having watched the footage back, referee Knut Kircher has had a rethink.

"If something happens on the pitch and the linesman sees it, he has to give me a signal," he told Sportschau. "In this case, the linesman was convinced it was a foul.

"I could only see the situation from the corner of my eye, so I had to rely on my assistant's decision.

"We have now seen the footage and I must admit he got it wrong, so I got it wrong as well, because I am the one in charge.

"It does not give Augsburg any points, but we are sorry. Our decision was the wrong one."

Even Bayern match-winner Muller conceded there were doubts over the awarding of the penalty, adding: "He, of course, blocks Douglas... I'd say that's a 50-50 story."

Memphis will get devoured at PSV, says De Mos

    memphis-depay_16voabfvtjloo1qv1r0gwgij0g.jpg

Memphis Depay has no chance of enjoying a prosperous return to PSV when he takes on his former side in Manchester United's first Champions League group game on Tuesday, according to Aad de Mos.

The 21-year-old, who was substituted at half-time in Saturday's 3-1 win over Liverpool. returns to Eindhoven for the first time since his summer move to Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The Netherlands international was the league's top goalscorer last term as he helped fire Phillip Cocu's men to the title, but De Mos believes he is in for a difficult night back at the Philips Stadion as he comes up against right-back Santiago Arias.

"Arias will devour him," he told Omroep Brabant. "I am sure, 100 per cent.

The former Ajax and PSV coach admits that Untied have a strong team, but does not believe they have been impressive so far this term.

"By the looks of it, Manchester United have a great team, but I've seen them play live twice and what they have done on the pitch is not impressive," he added.

"PSV have shown they can play very well, I saw at times that they are truly of an international class.

"Daley Blind is their main builder and Chris Smalling is a great defender. The attack has quality in Memphis and Wayne Rooney, but otherwise they are disappointing, so I think PSV can win."

Pellegrini: Pogba has a long way to go to match Toure

    1766752_heroa.jpg

Manuel Pellegrini insists that Paul Pogba has a long way to go before he can match the ability of Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure.

Juventus star Pogba was heavily linked with a move to the likes of City, Barcelona and Real Madrid in the summer, but no move materialised, with the Serie A champions rejecting and €80 million offer for him from the Spanish champions.

Pellegrini, though, insists that Pogba still has to work to emulate the achievements of his current midfield powerhouse, with Toure impressing so far this season.

“I don’t think it’s fair to compare a young player who is just starting with Yaya Toure who has had a brilliant career. Pogba must arrive to do what Yaya has done in his career,” he told reporters.

“Pogba is a very young player and when you’re young you have the chance to continue improving. That’s why it can be important to buy young players because they have more chances to improve.”

He added: “We are seeing the same Yaya as we saw in my first season when we won the Premier League.”

Pogba may come up against City when Juventus travel to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, and Pellegrini admits that his side face a tough task against the Italian champions.

“It’s a difficult group because we play against teams from the most important leagues of Europe,” Pellegrini said.

“Juventus have lost some very important players like Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez but they still have others who are very good and signed big players.”

Manchester United won't get close to winning the title - Ferdinand

    louis-van-gaal-manchester-united_vzhp90lw68ee1od3kxz5s8yun.jpg

Manchester United cannot get close to winning the Premier League this season, according to Rio Ferdinand.

The Old Trafford side beat Liverpool 3-1 on Saturday to go second in the league after five games, with Daley Blind, Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial on target.

While only Manchester City sit above Louis van Gaal's side, former Red Devils defender Ferdinand does not believe they can mount a serious challenge for the title this term.

"They'll finish in the top four," the ex-England defender told the Telegraph. "But I don't think they'll go close to winning the league.

"The philosophy is completely different from what it used to be. Their philosophy at the moment seems to be: ‘We'll keep the ball more than you, you won't have comfortable possession. Us suffocating you with possession is our first form of defence’.

"Man United supporters now have to go away and re-educate themselves on how to watch Man United. Don't go there expecting to see free-flowing, attacking, gung-ho football. It's methodical, side to side, wait for an opportunity to come. They suffocate other teams.

"Van Gaal is big enough, strong enough and experienced enough to know that he's not going to please everyone."

United's spending has increased immensely since Van Gaal was appointed coach and Ferdinand is not convinced the major investment is making them a better side.

“You think, ‘You've spent all that money, where is the centre-half?” he added. “Daley Blind? He’s a fantastic all-round footballer but he's not a defender.

"He's not going to spot danger as quick as a natural defender. He's indecisive in certain areas, he's not comfortable, he's not used to being in certain positions and then the ball is behind and he can't recover.

“The real top, top drawer players are playing for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. They make big differences in the big games and you have to be a special team to stop those players."

The 36-year-old brought an end to a 12-year spell at United when he left to join Queens Park Rangers in 2014 before retiring in the summer and he admits he was not happy at being forced out of Old Trafford.

“I was disappointed that I wasn't allowed to stay. Speaking to the lads now, they say it's a great education. It's different to what they've ever known," he added.

"Everything's changing other than the groundsman and the chef.

"I was talking to Nemanja Vidic and we were both saying the change is unreal in terms of the personnel and the transfer policy. We were saying, 'If they'd spent £50 million when we were there, we'd have won how much more?’"

Barcelona were totally dominant - Simeone

    diego-simeone-cropped_1bz3j7b9w90121i36iv8ml5hn4.jpg

Diego Simeone admitted that Atletico Madrid were second best against Barcelona as the Catalans recorded a 2-1 La Liga win in the Spanish capital on Saturday.

Fernando Torres handed Atletico the lead early in the second half, but Neymar quickly restored parity before substitute Lionel Messi decided the match in Barcelona's favour.
And the Argentine admitted that his side were second best throughout the contest.

"I think Barcelona dominated every area of the game, whether defending or in possession. We didn't have a good game," Simeone told reporters.

"We started the second half well, but the quick equaliser put us off our stride again. Our idea was to try and pressure higher up the pitch, but Barcelona absolutely dominated the game.

"They are a team that put a lot of pressure on you in attack and if you can't counter that with attacks of your own it makes it very difficult.

"The way we started the second half was what we were trying to achieve but they equalised quickly and we lost control of the game."

Simeone also praised Messi, who started the match from the bench and came on around the hour mark.

"Messi was decisive when he was on the pitch. He's used to deciding matches and he did so again," he concluded.
