Although the 27-year-old admitted that he is not too familiar with the hosts, he is aware that it promises to be a tough match.

“I haven't seen that much of Olympiacos but we know from last season that they have a good team. They have great individuals, are strong at counterattacks and play very aggressively,” he said.

Dortmund winger Hoffman welcomes Januzaj acquisition

    1856962_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund winger Jonas Hoffman has welcomed the loan signing of Adnan Januzaj from Manchester United - and insist there are similarities between Europa League and the Champions League.

Januzaj completed a shock loan move to the Bundesliga club in August, despite having made four appearances in all competitions for Louis van Gaal’s men in 2015-16.

The Belgium international made his debut for the club in a 4-2 win over Hannover on Saturday, and Hoffman has lauded Januzaj’s acquisition, particularly following the departures of the likes of Ciro Immobile, Kevin Grosskreutz and Jakub Blaszczykowski.

Speaking exclusively to Goal, Hoffman said: "He is good for us! Some attacking players left the club and we needed a replacement. We will have eight weeks with midweek matches until the winter break, so we will need every player.

"For us it is important to have some competitors. That helps us to show top-level performances and to develop. We have to help each other as a team and you can see what he's able to do with the ball."

Dortmund endured a difficult season in 2014-15, eventually surging to a seventh-placed finish after staving off the threat of relegation, but Hoffman insists that he has not been adversely affected by the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and has vowed to do all he can to help the club win the Europa League.

"You are travelling through Europe, playing every three days. Nevertheless, the teams are probably not that strong,” he added.

"But we prepare the same way, as if it would be a Champions League match. For me as a younger player it might be not bad to have a season of Europa League football, to be ready for Champions League afterwards.

"It's no disadvantage to play there. We want to leave our mark in the Europa League!"

Wenger desperate to win Champions League with Arsenal

    1843482_heroa.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that he is desperate to win the Champions League before he leaves the club.

The veteran coach has led the Gunners into Europe's biggest club competition every season he has been in charge, but the north London outfit have only reached the final on one occasion.

And the former Monaco boss is keen to make history and bring European silverware to the Emirates Stadium.

"My drive to win the Champions League is immense," he told reporters at a press conference before the Gunners’ first group game against Dinamo Zagreb.

"It's never been done at Arsenal. We have to put hard work in."

Wenger’s side will start their 18th consecutive Champions League campaign in Zagreb on Wednesday and are strong favourites to beat the Croatian champions.

Arsenal were dealt a huge blow earlier on Tuesday with the news that Jack Wilshere will undergo surgery on his left leg, while Aaron Ramsey and Hector Bellerin have joined the injury list for the north Londoners.

Wenger believes his squad is big enough to cope with the injuries but is predicting a difficult test against Dinamo.

“We have to play at our best to beat them,” Wenger added. “They have not lost a game for 11 months.
“Dinamo Zagreb dominate in Croatian football but we want to focus on our performance.

“I know I have a squad of experienced players. Every decision I make is difficult, so it’s easier to rotate than it was before.”

Lewandowski: Bayern will shrug off injury woes

    robertlewandowski-cropped_emtfsij93alo171t3knnra7y8.jpg

Robert Lewandowski is expecting Bayern Munich to shrug off their injury worries and open their Champions League campaign with a win at Olympiacos on Wednesday.

Bayern will be without Arjen Robben, Medhi Benatia, Holger Badstuber, Jan Kirchhoff and Franck Ribery but Lewandowski remains confident that Pep Guardiola's men will be too strong for their Greek hosts.

He said at Tuesday's pre-match press conference: "It won't be easy but we always play to win, whoever we are up against. The main thing is for us to start with victory on Wednesday and take it from there. We have a few injuries but we remain a formidable side nonetheless."

Lewandowski is aware of the atmosphere that will await the Bundesliga champions at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis.

He added: "The fans are very passionate here. I can't wait for the match. The atmosphere is a factor, but we have to remain focused and get the result we want. It won't be easy."

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm has also stressed the importance of a strong start in Group F, which is made up of Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb.

The 31-year-old said: "We are very much looking forward to it and want the first three points. With their fans supporting them they will give everything they can, so it will be dangerous for us. We have to be focused from the beginning, then it can only be a win for us. I know Olympiacos are very strong at home, but it's important to start with a victory - we are 100 per cent ready.

"We know how difficult it will be. But it is possible. The team has the quality for it."

Roma must deal with Barcelona and Messi - De Rossi

    danielederossi-cropped_bv5u2tgqfyu71nmsl25mpcngq.jpg

Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has warned his team-mates of the dual threat they will be need to counter on Wednesday in the form of Barcelona and Lionel Messi.

The sides meet at the Stadio Olimpico in Group E of the Champions League as Luis Enrique returns to his former club with the defending champions.

Grouped alongside BATE and Bayer Leverkusen, Barca and Roma are heavily fancied to progress to the knockout stages, with De Rossi also warning of the need to avoid a repeat of the 7-1 mauling they suffered at the hands of fellow European heavyweights Bayern Munich last term.

"Barcelona are a special side in that, as well as being the best team, they also boast the best player around," he said on Tuesday.

"It's doubly difficult coming up against a team like the Blaugrana, as they have both a great playing style and exceptional individuals.

"Our aim is not simply to stop them but to work hard during the match and help one another out. Messi almost always beats a man, that's why we have to stay compact and organised.

"Last season's match against the Germans was an unusual game. But Bayern and Barcelona are definitely on a similar level.

"They're two of the most dominant teams in the world. Part of our efforts to qualify will be decided tomorrow. We know it will be important, as opposed to crucial, and we cannot think that it will have an impact on our position in the standings and our efforts in the league.

"Serie A and the Champions League are two separate things, just like last year, although it definitely hit us hard losing like that at home."

Luis Enrique endured a difficult 2011-12 season at Roma as the Italian side were eliminated in the Europa League play-offs by Slovan Bratislava before finishing seventh in the league but De Rossi has defended the 45-year-old.

"He resigned so we can't really blame the club. The 2011-12 season was a tricky campaign and people judged it in a certain way, as is often the case in Rome," De Rossi added.

"He also didn't get much support from the media because perhaps it didn't suit their agenda.

"Since he left, he's shown he's not a mug like many people made him out to be and he's been successful.

"Yes, he has a great squad to work with but I'm happy for him and his staff because they're lovely people. Besides tomorrow, I'll always cheer him on."

No special Messi plan - Garcia

    rudi-garcia-cropped_5m5ndb7cjbql1t5gpz6ugrzyq.jpg

Roma coach Rudi Garcia says he has no special plans to deal with Lionel Messi in Wednesday's Champions League encounter with Barcelona.

The Argentina international, who helped fire his side to a European and domestic treble last term, came off the bench to guide them to a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid with a fine goal in Saturday's Liga game.
Garcia, though, feels Roma cannot focus solely on the 28-year-old when they welcome Luis Enrique's men to the Italian capital in their opening game in Group E.

"There's no anti-Messi plan, just as there isn't one to stop Luis Suarez or Andres Iniesta," Garcia said at a news conference.

"You deal with that threat as a team, both in attack and defence. We don't plan on defending for the whole game. We know there will be times when we have to dig in but we also have to use the ball well to give the opposition a problem.

"We're running out of superlatives to describe Messi. He's one of - if not - the best in the world."

Garcia then went on to concede that Barcelona are one of the best teams in the world, but he was quick to stress Roma will give their all to get a good result.

"We know Barcelona are a top side and the reigning European champions. They've won their first three league matches and there's no need to repeat all the praise they've been given," he continued.

"We know all about them. If they're not the best in the world, they're certainly up there.

"We'll play with humility but also ambition. We want to qualify for the next round and to do so we'll need to perform as well as we can in all six games in order to pick up points."

Wenger gets the best out of me, says Ozil

    mesutozil-cropped_12v9w2t4f9r5w1qkff5zczi5ro.jpg

Mesut Ozil has voiced his admiration for Arsene Wenger and has revealed that the Frenchman's presence played a huge role in his decision to leave Real Madrid for Arsenal back in 2013.

The Gunners parted with £42.5 million to acquire the Germany international, with Ozil becoming a key figure at the Emirates Stadium following his move.

And Ozil has now stressed that Wenger has been key to his fine form in recent months.

"He knows exactly how I tick and I know exactly what he thinks of me. Sometimes things work better than at other times, that's football, but the manager believes in me and that means a lot to me," Ozil told the official Arsenal website.

"He has experience and in past years you’ve seen him develop some top players. I get on really well with him and he gives me his trust. I’m thankful to him for that and to be praised by a coach like him means a lot.

"I thank him for that through good performances on the pitch.

"Before I joined, I knew that Arsenal were always a technically-strong team. That's also why I decided to join this club, because I know exactly what the manager wants from the team.

"Our game centres around playing good, technical football and that’s good. It's thanks to the manager because he's worked on that for years and has formulated a technically-gifted team that can dominate any opposition.

"That's why we're really pleased to have a manager like him."

Ozil is yet to score in four Premier League appearances this campaign, but has two assists to his name so far.

Luis Enrique eager to write Champions League history with Barcelona

    luisenrique-cropped_1qm25zekj1vye19ve82xmjvjww.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique says the opportunity to become the first team to defend the Champions League is a "wonderful stimulus" and clams his side have to be considered favourites for the competition.

The Catalans open their European defence against Luis Enrique's former club Roma on Wednesday, just over three months since dispatching Juventus in last season's final.

Barca have made a 100 per cent start to their domestic campaign and Luis Enrique is hoping they can transfer that form to European competition, ending with further success in Milan in May.

"No, it is not an extra pressure, it's a wonderful stimulus," he told reporters.

"It's wonderful for the team, for Barca and for all Barca fans. We know it's very difficult and that nodody has ever done it but we'll try to do it.

"It's not pressure, quite the contrary. It's something of a cliche but if we're favourites because we won the league we have to be favourites for the Champions League because we are champions.

"Once the ball starts rolling there's no such thing as a champion but 32 teams who all want to be champion.

"Until it starts, all respect should be given to the previous champions, which is us."

Luis Enrique endured a difficult season at Roma before resigning in 2012, crashing out of the Europa League in the qualification stages before finishing seventh in Serie A and he feels he has learned from the experience.

"I feel a little bit older and I think it's been a normal process in a manager's career," he added.

"Coming here reminds me of positive things, it was a difficult year but my memories are positive. I've always said that regardless of memories, tomorrow is an important game.

"I have no-one to blame, it was my decision. I explained why I left but I don't really remember that well. I had my own things to worry about."

Wilshere injury not career-threatening - Wenger

    jackwilsherearsenewenger-cropped_1l52haum3dzdv16z0xnklgfky3.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists Jack Wilshere can recover from his injury difficulties to enjoy a successful career after being ruled out for the next three months.

The Gunners confirmed on Tuesday that the England international faces an extended lay-off as he prepares to undergo surgery on his left fibula.

Wilshere sustained the injury in pre-season and is set to miss much of the remainder of 2015.

Ahead of Arsenal's Champions League opener against Dinamo Zagreb, though, Wenger remained upbeat about Wilshere's chances of making a full recovery.

"With Wilshere we have had bad news, he will need surgery and will be out four around three months," the Frenchman explained.

"He is young enough to get over this, l'm confident he can make the career his talent deserves.

"He is disappointed but he has shown in the past he can deal with that. He is determined to come back as quickly as possible.

"It is not a career-threatening injury. He can still play again this season."

:(Shaw on horror injury: Words can't describe how gutted I am

    1928392_heroa.jpg

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has reacted to suffering a suspected broken leg against PSV, saying "words can't describe how gutted" he is.

The former Southampton man was caught by Hector Moreno as he broke into the Eredivisie side's box, and received treatment for around 10 minutes before being replaced by Marcos Rojo.

And the England international took to Twitter to describe his disappointment, saying: "Thank you everyone for your messages, words can't describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger."

Shaw has been a key player for Louis van Gaal's side so far this season, starting all seven matches for the Red Devils as well as both of England's European Championship qualifiers.

Sevilla 3-0 Borussia Monchengladbach: Visitors routed in second-half show

    1928932_heroa.jpg

Sevilla stepped up to the Champions League stage with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday evening.

There were questions lingering around the home side following a poor domestic start but penalties from Kevin Gameiro and Ever Banega and a first Sevilla goal from Yevhen Konoplyanka completed a 3-0 demolition job of their Group D opponents for Unai Emery's men.

Sevilla's successful defence of their Europa League crown last season booked their place in the Champions League and, while they were wasteful at times on Tuesday, Monchengladbach had no answer to the Liga side’s pace and movement in the final third.

Spurred on by their attacking full-backs, Sevilla rarely gave their visitors a moment’s rest and should have gone ahead early on when Jose Antonio Reyes blazed over from close range.

Although dominant, Sevilla's finishing was letting them down, with Gameiro – enjoying a more central role after Carlos Bacca's close-season departure – wasting three fine opportunities.

The breakthrough did eventually come via the France international, who converted a 47th-minute penalty, but he then hit a second onto the crossbar shortly after. Luck did not desert Sevilla 24 minutes from time, though, as Banega coolly swept home the game’s third spot-kick and Konoplyanka added a third late on to complete a convincing win.

Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre spiced things up pre-match by blasting Sevilla's perceived play-acting when the two sides met in the Europa League last term and, perhaps as a result of those words, the Spaniards looked fired up right from the start and should have scored inside four minutes.Vitolo struck the post from 18 yards and Reyes inexplicably sliced over the open goal from eight yards.

Despite such promise, Sevilla's commitment to attack occasionally left them open at the back and the visitors almost capitalised in the 16th minute – Ibrahima Traore firing just wide after collecting Raffael's cut-back.

That chance was little more than a warning, though, as Sevilla swiftly took control again and the lively Gameiro spurned the hosts' next clear-cut opportunity 14 minutes later, heading Reyes' teasing cross into the side-netting.Although a constant nuisance to the Monchengladbach defence, Gameiro was not having any luck in front of goal.

The former Paris Saint-Germain attacker smashed a half-volley over from close range in the 35th minute, before then seeing a left-footed effort saved by Yann Sommer as the first half drew to a close.

Sevilla's start to the second half caught Monchengladbach napping, the home side taking the lead within two minutes as Gameiro finally got the better of Sommer, finding the top-right corner from the penalty spot after Vitolo was tripped by the Swiss goalkeeper.

Vitolo caused havoc again a few moments later, darting into the area and luring Roel Brouwers into a clumsy foul for a second penalty in quick succession, only for Gameiro to smash his kick onto the crossbar. The visitors rarely threatened to restore parity and Sevilla effectively wrapped things up in the 66th minute, as Tony Jantschke tripped Gameiro and Banega made no mistake from 12 yards.

Shortly after replacing local hero Reyes, Konoplyanka wrapped things up with a fluke effort from out wide on the right flank, compounding a forgettable night for Sommer and Monchengladbach.
