Gotze took Dortmund-Bayern move too lightly - Magath

    mario-gotze-arturo-vidal-bayern-munich-german-bundesliga-22082015_qepjvaemzwff1w04ly17e7kph.jpg

Former Bayern Munich coach Felix Magath believes Mario Gotze has struggled at the Allianz Arena because he took his move from Borussia Dortmund too lightly.

The Germany international joined the Bavarians in July 2013 for a fee of €37 million, but has thus far been unable to nail down a regular berth in Pep Guardiola's starting line-up.

However, while Magath feels that the 23-year-old is playing nowhere near as well as he was during his days at Signal Iduna Park, the 62-year-old believes that the World Cup winner is finally showing signs of settling.

"In my opinion, Gotze underestimated his move from Borussia Dortmund to Bayern," the 62-year-old told Bild .

"Bayern are a different club than Dortmund. There are a lot of players who have struggled to make the grade at Bayern.

"I think that it was extra difficult for Gotze because he was the star man at Dortmund, but was only one of many stars at Bayern.

"He scored the winning goal in the World Cup final, but he wasn't anything special in the other games.

"And he still is not anything like the dominant player he was at BVB.

"But I get the feeling that he is now getting used to the situation at Bayern and is on his way to getting back to his usual best."

Suarez worse than Costa, says Pele

    diego-costa-chelsea_14ect6noeih0q16mh9s6j4nphx.jpg

Pele has defended Chelsea striker Diego Costa following recent criticism of his playing style, insisting that his behaviour against Arsenal pales in comparison to Luis Suarez biting an opponent.

Costa made the headlines for all the wrong reasons against the Gunners as he was involved in a number of confrontations, eventually resulting in a three-game ban for violent conduct following an apparent slap on Laurent Koscielny.

Nevertheless, Brazil great Pele has downplayed the events and maintains that the Blues star is no worse than the Barcelona forward.

"Listen, this to me was so common," Pele told AFP. "I suffered all my life with good marking.

"Diego Costa is a very good player, everybody knows. This was one moment.

"The striker who bit someone, Luis Suarez, was worse than this."

Suarez has been punished for biting an opponent on three occasions.

He first received a ban for sinking his teeth into PSV midfielder Otman Bakkal when at Ajax, then bit Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic while under contract with Liverpool, before repeating the feat at the 2014 World Cup, with Italy's Giorgio Chiellini his victim.

:shocked:Celta 4-1 Barcelona: Nolito stars as hosts hammer champions at Balaidos

    1971362_heroa.jpg

Barcelona were beaten for the first time in La Liga this season as Celta romped to a stunning 4-1 victory at Balaidos on Wednesday.

Nolito haunted his former club by scoring a sublime opener and setting up two goals for Iago Aspas in an astonishing contest which saw Barca's defence repeatedly opened up by an impressive home side, with Gerard Pique enduring a match to forget.

Lionel Messi hit the post early in the second half and Sergio Alvarez made a string of good saves prior to a goal from Neymar, but Celta were worthy winners and they sealed the points through substitute John Guidetti's late goal.

The huge victory puts them above their opponents and Atletico Madrid in the early-season table.

Celta have now taken 13 points from their first five matches of the season, while the defeat comes as a bitter blow for a Barca side that had started the campaign in impressive fashion with four wins from four.

Pique returned to league action after suspension as Luis Enrique made five changes to the team that beat Levante last time out for the game against his former club, with Andres Iniesta and Luis Suarez amongst the stars brought in. Jordi Alba was absent with a neck injury.

Celta started positively but it was Barca who created the best chance of the early stages. Iniesta drove towards goal and slipped a pass through to Messi, whose shot was parried to safety by Sergio.

The champions had another opportunity shortly afterwards when Messi combined with Neymar but the Brazilian could only shoot straight at Sergio from a decent opening.

Barca regretted those missed chances when Celta moved in front on 26 minutes. Hugo Mallo's cross from the right made it all the way through to Nolito in the far corner of the penalty area and the 28-year-old guided a curling effort brilliantly into the far corner, with a diving Marc-Andre ter Stegen only able to get a faint hand to the ball.

Four minutes later it was two for the hosts. A casual Pique lost possession on the halfway line to Nolito, whose flick-on allowed Aspas to race clean through on goal and scoop a stunning left-footed finish over Ter Stegen and into the net.

Celta missed a golden opportunity to make it three shortly after half-time. Sergio Busquets gave away possession and Daniel Wass' pass sent Aspas through again, but the former Liverpool forward could only fire wide.

At the other end, Iniesta teased his way into the box and squared for Messi, whose left-footed shot bounced off the post when a goal seemed certain.

Barca were beginning to pile on the pressure and Pique headed narrowly over before Messi lashed another shot towards goal that Sergio did well to repel.

But Luis Enrique's men paid the price for committing so many men forward as Celta scored an astonishing third on 56 minutes. Sergio punched clear from a crowded area and Nolito completed the clearance by finding Aspas on halfway, where the forward raced away from Dani Alves and ran unopposed into the penalty area and comfortably slotted past Ter Stegen.

It should have been four when Nolito raced clear after another counter-attack left the Barca defence completely exposed, but the Spain international's finish rolled the wrong side of the far post.

Sergio made two further saves from substitute Munir and Neymar as the visitors desperately looked for a way back into the game.

Barca did score with 10 minutes remaining when Messi's chipped long-range pass was impressively controlled and finished in the box by Neymar.

But Celta sealed a famous triumph with a fourth goal on 83 minutes. Pique failed to intercept Mallo's cut-back and substitute Guidetti smashed home from close-range to complete a miserable day for the champions.

Hoffenheim 1-1 Dortmund: Visitors held as Aubameyang strikes again

    pierre-emerick-aubameyang-oliver-baumann-borussie-dortmund-1899-hoffenheim-bundesliga-23092015_1xwnlahocccum1stjiaawsuz84.jpg

Hoffenheim recorded just their second point of the season against Dortmund, who were forced to come from behind after an under-par performance at the Rhein-Neckar Arena.

The hosts took the lead just three minutes before the break after Eduardo Vargas delivered a perfectly weighted pass to the feet of Sebastian Rudy, who outmuscled Marcel Schmelzer before finding the bottom corner.

10 minutes into the second period and the visitors were level as Mats Hummels’ cross was superbly chested down by Gonzalo Castro to the feet of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to stab home his seventh goal of the season.

Wednesday's result means Tuchel's men remain second in the table with 16 points from six games, trailing leaders Bayern Munich by two points, while Hoffenheim remain winless.

The home side made a superb start to the game and tested Roman Burki within 60 seconds. Kevin Volland picked up the ball on the edge of the area after some good work from Vargas, but his powerful shot failed to trouble the Dortmund goalkeeper.

Mats Hummels then found Marco Reus with a perfect pass over the top just minutes later, yet the Germany international's first touch let him down and the chance went begging.

Aubameyang also got in on the action early on after a through ball from Reus, only to see the on-form Oliver Baumann to pull off a fine save. The Gabon forward got another chance midway through the first half following a cross from Marcel Schmelzer, but he aimed wide from close range.

Vargas should have opened the scoring for Hoffenheim after 24 minutes when Burki dropped a cross from the left and the Chile international seemed to have an open goal gaping in front of him, but his shot from just yards out was deflected wide for a corner.

Hoffenheim eventually went 1-0 up in the 42nd minute via Rudy. Vargas held the ball up brilliantly before setting up the dynamic midfielder and he beat Burki with a low shot into the far corner.

Some poor play from Matthias Ginter nearly cost Dortmund when Vargas intercepted his back-pass toward Burki, yet Dortmund escaped as the attacker's attempt struck the upright.

Vargas' miss proved to be a costly one just minutes later. Hummels reached Gonzalo Castro with a fine long ball and the midfielder chested it into Aubameyang's path to slot home from close range.

Shinji Kagawa should have given Tuchekl's side the lead after 67 minutes of play after yet another fine cross from Schmelzer, but the gifted midfielder aimed too high from 10 yards out.

Castro was the next Dortmund player to get a fine chance, yet the former Bayer Leverkusen man's low shot went straight at Baumann as it ended honours even.

Benteke an upgrade on Balotelli, says Barnes

    hd-christian-benteke-liverpool-premier-league-09082015_1jcactgez7py51nt9s8awk9gj3.jpg

Liverpool legend John Barnes is confident Christian Benteke will prove to be a major upgrade on Mario Balotelli and form a fine partnership with Daniel Sturridge .

Benteke was signed from Aston Villa during the summer after Balotelli failed to make an impact during his one and only season at Anfield, with the Italian eventually returning to former club AC Milan.

Benteke netted the winner in the 1-0 victory over Bournemouth - Liverpool's opening home game - while also finding the net versus Manchester United, and Barnes has little doubt he will succeed on Merseyside.

"Balotelli and Benteke are completely different players," Barnes was quoted as saying by The Daily Star .

"Benteke loves high balls, he's strong, he's got a great attitude and he runs the channels, whereas Balotelli is different.

"It's a completely different partnership [Sturridge and Benteke compared to Sturridge and Balotelli].

"Benteke is a completely different kettle of fish. He has a much better attitude, so I'm hopeful he'll be a better option alongside Sturridge."

The 24-year-old is recovering from a hamstring injury he picked up against Norwich City at the weekend.

Tottenham 1-2 Arsenal: Flamini brace sends Gunners into round four

    1971512_heroa.jpg

Mathieu Flamini's exceptional volley gave Arsenal a 2-1 League Cup win over fierce rivals Tottenham on Wednesday.

Flamini opened the scoring in the 26th minute, pouncing on Michel Vorm's save to fire home from close range, as the Gunners edged a largely poor first half.

Harry Kane had the ball in the net early in the second period only to be denied by the offside flag, but Calum Chambers turned Nacer Chadli's cross into his own net to level the scores.

Kane's brilliant volley almost put Spurs ahead before Olivier Giroud wasted a great chance of his own, though Flamini's superb second secured the victory for the visitors.

Joel Campbell made his first competitive start for Arsenal since January 4 and he missed the first clear chance of the game, heading over the crossbar from close range after Giroud had failed to connect properly with Kieran Gibbs' cross.

Both sides lacked quality in the final third during a scrappy opening 25 minutes but Arsene Wenger's side silenced the vociferous home support just short of the half-hour mark. Vorm could only parry Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's shot back out into the six-yard box, and Flamini arrived to drive the rebound into the roof of the net.

Danny Rose dragged a shot into the side-netting but Spurs were wasteful with the ball, and Campbell had half a chance to double Arsenal's lead as he just failed to connect with Giroud's cross.

Kane pulled a left-footed effort narrowly past the far post and the England striker then found the back of the net shortly after the break, but the offside flag was raised following Christian Eriksen's parried effort.

Tottenham were firmly in the ascendancy by this point and they found the equaliser after 56 minutes, as Chambers stuck out a leg and diverted the ball past the helpless David Ospina following Chadli's low cross from the left.

Kane thought he had put Spurs ahead with a stunning scissor-kick volley but Gibbs superbly headed clear on the line, before Giroud failed to squeeze the ball past Vorm when played in by Aaron Ramsey's fine pass.

But, just as the game appeared to be heading for extra time, Flamini struck again. The Frenchman rifled a superbly controlled volley into the bottom corner after finding space on the edge of the box.

White Hart Lane was stunned and, though Spurs piled forward in the closing minutes, Arsenal held on to reach round four.

Walsall 1-4 Chelsea: Kenedy stars as Blues ease through

    1972502_heroa.jpg

Defending champions Chelsea were forced to work hard for victory against lower league Walsall but Kenedy's second half strike sealed their progression into the next stage of the competition.

It took just 10 minutes for the Blues to find the breakthrough against their League One opponents as Kenedy was given time on the left by-line to pick out Ramires at the back post to head in his first goal of the season.

Loic Remy doubled the Blues’ advantage moments before the break as he found space in the box to power a shot into the top corner but their celebrations were short lived as James O’Connor turned in Asmir Begovic’s parried save in stoppage time.

But Brazilan forward Kenedy was to put the game beyond doubt with a calmly taken strike after a disguised through ball from fellow youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek mid-way through the second half before substitute Pedro added his name to the scoresheet in stoppage time.

Keen to build on the momentum provided by two wins in the last week, Chelsea's start showed no evidence of taking their lower-league opposition lightly.

The visitors' early ventures into the attacking third saw Kenedy thrive, though he was denied a first goal for the club in the third minute by a crucial O'Connor block.

Kenedy proved even more effective seven minutes later as Chelsea broke the deadlock.

The teenager pounced on a botched clearance and picked out the run of Ramires with a pinpoint cross, allowing the midfielder to head home.

Radamel Falcao should have doubled their advantage shortly after, but again O'Connor was there to clear in the six-yard box after Neil Etheridge had been beaten.

But the away side finally got their second four minutes before the break – Remy producing an emphatic finish after Ramires' incisive pass.

Walsall went into the interval buoyant, however, as O'Connor pulled one back with a scuffed finish from close range after Asmir Begovic could only parry a long-range free-kick from former Chelsea man Milan Lalkovic.

Chelsea started the second half full of intent, though, swiftly adding a third in the 52nd minute through the impressive Kenedy, who latched on to Ruben Loftus-Cheek's exquisite first-time pass and rifled into the net.

Walsall enjoyed some late pressure, delighting their supporters with a fine show of character, but Chelsea's depth and array of talent told at the end, as substitute Pedro slammed home from distance right at the end to round things off.

Juventus 1-1 Frosinone: Blanchard denies Bianconeri at the death

    1972652_heroa.jpg

Frosinone claimed their first point of the Serie A season as Leonardo Blanchard's late header secured them a shock 1-1 draw against Juventus.

Simone Zaza – given his chance in the absence of fellow forwards Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata – struck his first goal for Juventus after 50 minutes, though his shot needed a deflection to get past visiting goalkeeper Nicola Leali.

Massimiliano Allegri's side looked set to make it two wins on the spin in domestic action following Sunday's 2-0 triumph at Genoa, only to concede a late equaliser in injury time.

A corner from the left allowed defender Blanchard to come up from the back and head home only Frosinone's second goal of the campaign, though despite the impressive result they still remain bottom of the table.

Frosinone had hit the woodwork in the first half through Nicolas Castillo, but that proved to be a rare moment of joy in a game that, unsurprisingly, Juventus dominated.

The hosts saw a header from Paul Pogba kept out by the crossbar five minutes before the break, with the Frenchman having previously curled two long-range efforts over the top.

Juan Cuadrado also went close with a shot from outside of the box, hitting the side netting with former Juventus goalkeeper Leali beaten.

However, Frosinone gave the champions a warning when a rare foray into enemy territory saw them strike the post through Castillo.

His poked effort towards goal came back off the woodwork before the follow-up attempt was charged down by Andrea Barzagli. The Frosinone players were adamant the defender had blocked the shot with his hand, but their penalty appeals were immediately waved away.

Zaza saw the bar at the same end of the field keep out a looping header straight after the break, though fortune went his way soon after when his low shot clipped a Frosinone player to get beyond the stranded Leali.

The busy Cuadrado twice came close to doubling Juventus' lead, including a well-struck drive that whistled just past the frame of the goal.

Giorgio Chiellini also had a glorious opportunity to make it 2-0, drifting a header just wide after ghosting in at the far post, while fellow substitute Hernanes stung the palms of Leali in the closing minutes.

The home side were made to pay for their profligacy when Blanchard rose at a corner to plant a header beyond debutant Norberto Neto in the Juventus goal.
