Mancini: Inter Milan need to improve in all areas

    mancini-cropped_4jo829o4avmy15vzmarmdgsr3.jpg

Roberto Mancini has warned his Inter Milan players they must improve if they are to maintain their 100 per cent record in Serie A.

Inter have a three point gap at the summer of the league after recording a string of five victories from five since the start of the season but face closest rivals Fiorentina in a huge early-season clash on Sunday.

And Mancini, who could only guide the club to disappointing eighth-placed finish last term, says that he is happy but wants to see improvement if his side are to continue their impressive form.

"I'm able to judge if the team is playing well or not. We can improve and we're still making some mistakes," the ex-Lazio boss told his pre-match press conference. "I don't think there are any teams that can be considered perfect."

"Inter have got the right mentality. I respect everyone's views but I'm happy with my own to be quite honest. We're happy about the fact that we look solid. It means we've done a good job.

"I'm quite pleased for the moment. We don't only need to score more goals; we have to improve defensively too, our possession play - everything.

"I saw the president here at Appiano yesterday and he was happy. We're all happy.

"Fiorentina were already playing good football last season. They're a very dangerous side in attack. We'll need to make the most of the chances we have."

Benitez: Poor finishing cost Real Madrid

Rafael Benitez feels Real Madrid did enough to secure maximum points in Saturday's Liga encounter with Malaga , but were unlucky not to convert one of their chances as they had to settle for a goalless draw.

The Santiago Bernabeu side created a number of fine opportunities, with Cristiano Ronaldo alone getting in 14 shots, yet they failed to beat Carlos Kameni.

"We created enough chances to score and get a win," said Benitez.

"Our opponents always sit very deep, so we will not get many one-on-ones with the goalkeeper. Instead we will have to play one-twos and crosses.

"But I think it is a positive thing that we created so many chances. Actually taking our chances is an area where we will have to improve."

Madrid seemed to have broken the deadlock when Isco beat Kameni after 76 minutes, only for Weligton to clear off the line, although several Real players felt the ball was in.

Replays of the incident were inconclusive as to whether the ball was actually in, though, and Benitez called for the introduction of goal-line technology to prevent similar situations in the future.

"Goal-line technology is being used in some other places and I think it could be quite useful," he added.

Benitez was forced to take off Jese Rodriguez around the hour mark after the attacker picked up a knock, but his injury appears to be less severe than initially feared.

He said: "Jese's injury does not seem too bad. We think he had cramp."

Ronaldo not obsessed with records - Marcelo

    cristiano-ronaldo-fc-malaga-real-madrid-150926_1g5hwuhryoi9719nifee9junxz.jpg

Real Madrid defender Marcelo has defended Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of Saturday's 0-0 draw against Malaga and has stressed that the Portugal international is not thinking about becoming the club's all-time top goalscorer.

Ronaldo is two goals away from overtaking Raul following his eight goals so far this season, but he has failed to find the net in five of Madrid's six Liga games in 2015-16.

He once more drew a blank against Malaga, despite notching up 14 attempts, but Marcelo feels it would be unfair to criticise the prolific attacker.

"Everyone knows what Cristiano is like," Marcelo told the official Madrid website.

"He is not obsessed with beating records, but rather he aims to help the team to win."

Saturday's draw saw Madrid keep a clean sheet for the sixth time in seven competitive games, yet Marcelo was by no means satisfied with his side's performance.

"One of the aims is to not concede goals and we are managing that," he added.

"However, in order to be top of the table, it is also necessary to score goals. There are no easy games and you have to approach each game as if it were a final."

The Brazilian also had his say on Lionel Messi, who will be out of action for two months due to a knee injury, and wished the Barcelona star a speedy recovery.

He said: "I hope that Messi recovers soon."

Ferguson backs Giggs to replace Van Gaal at United

    ryangiggs-cropped_5bnhyncx5gjg1inhnmhr95qo0.jpg

Manchester United assistant Ryan Giggs is the right man to succeed manager Louis van Gaal, according to former boss Alex Ferguson.

Giggs, 41, was appointed Van Gaal's right-hand man last season and the United icon is seemingly being prepared for the top job once the Dutchman departs in 2017.

Reports have emerged recently that Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola is United's first choice to replace Van Gaal, however, Ferguson is under no illusions who should take the reins at Old Trafford.

"I think Ryan has all the qualities to be a fantastic manager," the 73-year-old and 13-time Premier League winner said via the Mirror.

"I have heard it said that he will have to go to another club first because he doesn't have enough experience.

"But he is gaining experience working with Louis van Gaal and he also had experience working with David Moyes and working under me as a player.

"I don't think that Ryan needs to go anywhere."

Van Gaal's contract is due to expire in two years and the 64-year-old Dutchman has given no indication whether he will renew his contract but Ferguson doubts Van Gaal will walk away from the hot seat so soon.

"Louis has said he will retire in 2017, but I'm not so sure," he added.

"Once you get bitten by the bug at United it is very difficult to walk away."

Rooney expecting more Martial magic for Man Utd

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united-english-premier-league_1xy2megzi48cq11szasb8sqnys.jpg

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is expecting more 'magic' moments from Anthony Martial following his team-mate's impressive start at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old France international has scored four goals in five games following his £36m move from Ligue 1 side Monaco on transfer deadline day, including a double against Southampton.

But Rooney doesn't see Martial's form dropping any time soon, and believes the centre forward will produce more memorable performances in the coming months.

“He’s been incredible. He’s a young lad, we have to remember that," the England skipper told United's official website.

"I think he’ll be a big player for us this season and in the future but we need to let him enjoy his football and I’m sure he’ll have magic moments for us.”

Rooney netted his first Premier League goal of the season in the 3-0 home win over Sunderland on Saturday, knocking in Martial's cross in the first minute of the second half and says he was never concerned by his goal drought.

“I wasn’t worried. It’s my fifth goal of the season for United and I’ve scored for England so it was just about getting off the mark in the league," he added.

"Hopefully everyone will concentrate on me playing my football now and I’ll enjoy it.”

Blanc: PSG only showed up for 45 minutes

    laurent-blanc-psg-gfca-ajaccio-ligue-1-16082015_zi8938xswqbf1dtypaqd6rv8o.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc lamented his side's slow start before a rousing second-half performance inspired a 4-1 win over Nantes.

Goals from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Angel di Maria and Serge Aurier saw Blanc's men respond to Yacine Bammou's 11th-minute opener and go four points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

Blanc told Infosport+ : "We will only analyse the second half because we were not there in the first.

"We only played 45 minutes. Put yourself in situations like that at half-time, and having this reaction is positive.

"But there are still some questions to ask yourself to understand why nothing was done in the first period.

"There is no specific answer. In football, when you do not put the commitment when you are not focused, you have this this kind of half-time."

Blanc laid the gauntlet down to his players at the break in an attempt to provoke a positive response.

He continued: "At half-time, we said that if we came back with the same state of mind, it was not worth it to go back, we could take a shower and go to Paris."

First Messi, now Neymar: Luis Enrique irritated by Barcelona penalty woes

    neymar-cropped_1fdwxhje88t1n1oqsfrsfnd61j.jpg

Luis Enrique admitted he is growing frustrated with Barcelona's inability to convert penalties in the wake of Neymar's miss in the 2-1 win over Las Palmas at Camp Nou.

The Brazil international skied his effort over the bar from 12 yards in Saturday's La Liga encounter after Lionel Messi had already failed from the spot on two occasions earlier this campaign.

Neymar's miss did not affect the outcome of Saturday's match, yet Luis Enrique has nonetheless stressed Barcelona must improve from the spot.

"Neymar has been taking penalties with Brazil's national team and for us as well, but it is clear that we will have to improve here," Luis Enrique stated at a press conference.

"There is always room for improvement and penalties are certainly an area where we will have to do better."

Saturday's win was Barcelona's fifth in six La Liga games as they returned to winning ways after the 4-1 mauling at Celta Vigo in midweek, yet Luis Enrique was not entirely satisfied with their attacking performance.

"We haven’t been creating too many chances recently and that’s cause for a bit of dissatisfaction," he added.

"The fact that our opponents have been scoring some fluke goals does not help either. That makes the game much tougher, especially in the last five minutes."

Atletico blindly trust Jackson Martinez - Simeone

    jacksonmartinez-cropped_1je6x4w3rcdev1crqgwoyplppk.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone backed Jackson Martinez to find goalscoring form after his side were beaten 1-0 by Villarreal.A 14th-minute Leo Baptistao goal was all Villarreal needed to secure their victory on Saturday, moving top of La Liga by a point.

Jackson, who joined Atletico in July, has only one goal in six league games for the club so far and he was substituted at half-time.

However, Simeone is confident that the Colombia international will rediscover the form that saw him become such a prolific striker at Porto prior to his summer signing for the Vicente Calderon side."Jackson is a very important player for us," he told reporters. "We blindly trust him and expect him to appear in the important and decisive moments."

Despite backing Jackson, Simeone was critical his team for knowing where Villarreal's strengths lie but failing to adapt and take any points away from El Madrigal."The match was fairly clear. We knew from earlier matches that Villarreal are an ordered, hard-working team and that the details would decide the match," he added.

"They took advantage of the situation in the first half. We pushed in the second half, but couldn't do it."

No excuses for Juventus - Evra

    juventus-cropped_amaklfau85q21gp43o06a74ez.jpg

Juventus defender Patrice Evra says there are no excuses for his team's slow start to the Serie A season after another loss on Saturday.

Max Allegri's squad was overhauled in the summer following the exits of Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal and Carlos Tevez, while injuries have also hit in the early part of the campaign, with Claudio Marchisio and new arrival Sami Khedira out for long spells. The defending champions went down 2-1 at Napoli to leave them with just one win from their opening six league games and 10 points behind leaders Inter.

And Evra was in no mood for excuses when he spoke to reporters at the San Paolo: "We're all responsible.""Our young players cannot be used as an excuse and it's down to the older heads to help them out.

"It's a difficult moment for us, and it hurts, but we're not panicking and I remain fully optimistic. Now we've got the Champions League and Bologna and we want to win at home."

Goals from Lorenzo Insigne and Gonzalo Higuain sent Napoli to their win, and they held on despite Mario Lemina pulling one back for Juve.
