Muller: Bayern only have to get the ball to Lewandowski

    robertlewandowski-cropped_1envmtliehefz1mj180uo2mmd1.jpg

Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Muller has praised Robert Lewandowski's fine form and suggested that in order to score, the Bundesliga champions just need to give ball to the Poland international.

Muller had been Bayern's main dangerman in the opening weeks of the 2015-16 campaign as he scored six goals in their first four Bundesliga games, but Lewandowski has taken his spot in the limelight since.

The 27-year-old has netted a remarkable 10 goals in his last three appearances in all competitions, including hat-trick in the 5-0 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night, and Muller believes at the moment it is just a matter of getting the ball to Lewandowski and waiting for the striker to finish.

"He seems to have taken over my fine form. If he goes on like this it's very good for the team," Muller told reporters.

"We only have to make sure that we keep getting him in dangerous positions and that we get the ball to him.

"We also have to keep playing as a team and act united, but it is clear that Robert is in amazing form."

Lewandowski's sublime goalscoring form gives Bayern reason to celebrate, yet Muller has stressed they will not let themselves go at the Oktoberfest as an important game awaits against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

"We certainly won't get drunk. We've never done that, but we will enjoy the afternoon with a beer or two," he said.

"The game against Dortmund will be a top match at its finest. The German footballing family is really looking forward to Sunday."

Tottenham lose Son to foot injury

    sonheungmin-cropped_1p3aovelkxtyf12x9jzpsxbwqf.jpg

Tottenham forward Heung-Min Son is a major doubt for Thursday's Europa League clash with Monaco and this weekend's Premier League trip to Swansea City with a foot injury. The South Korea international, 23, has made an impressive start to his time at White Hart Lane with three goals in his first four appearances in all competitions.

However, he looks set to miss at least the next two fixtures after suffering a foot problem during Tottenham's 4-1 victory over Manchester City last Saturday.

"Heung-Min Son sustained a foot injury in a challenge during Saturday's win versus Man City and has spent the past few days being reviewed," the club posted on Twitter.

"Our medical staff will monitor Son's progress during his rehabilitation in order to determine when he will be fit to return to training."

Fowler: Sturridge will always score if fit

    daniel-sturridge-cropped_bd4sf7q7eod21plg5amzhhwoh.jpg

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler believes Daniel Sturridge will always score goals when he is fit and expects the 26-year-old to feel "unstoppable" following his double against Aston Villa at the weekend.

Sturridge recently made his comeback after hip surgery and has immediately become a key figure for manager Brendan Rodgers again.

"He’s a player that, given a few games, will score goals. He's a goalscorer," Fowler told Liverpool's official website.

"We want Daniel to score goals, we want him to do well and we want Liverpool to win.

"To use another cliche, it doesn't matter who scores the goals as long as we are winning - that's very apt. But if Daniel is playing and he's fit he will score goals.

Looking ahead to Thursday's Europa League clash with FC Sion, Fowler suggested that Sturridge will be desperate to play and net more goals.

"As a player if you've scored in your last game you will think you will go into your next game and are going to score," the former striker added.

"He won't want to be rested and he will be looking forward to it and looking forward to getting his boots on, you always are once you score because you feel unstoppable."

Sturridge netted 21 times in 29 Premier League appearances in 2013-14, but injuries restricted him to just seven top-flight starts and four goals last season as Rodgers' side struggled.

    'Klopp turned down Mexico job'

    jurgen-klopp-borussia-dortmund-dfb-pokal-30052015_bckaknwoczq21rvwzw3rmd3h8.jpg

Guillermo Cantu, the secretary general of the Mexican Football Federation, has indicated that the national governing body approached former Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp to take over at El Tri, but the German coach turned the job down.

Klopp left Dortmund following a disappointing 2014-15 season in which the club missed out on qualification for Champions League football and has been heavily linked with the Liverpool manager's job, should Brendan Rodgers's time at Anfield come to an end.

But the 48-year-old is believed to be taking a sabbatical year away from football and Cantu has indicated that the sustained break was a central reason behind the German's decision to turn Mexico down.

"We spoke to his representative, but he said he is on a sabbatical and it would not be possible now", the secretary general told the Marcaje Personal programme.

And Cantu also believes Klopp "would be at a short-term disadvantage" because he is not familiar with Mexican football and does not speak Spanish.

It is believed that Juan Carlos Osorio remains the favourite to take the Mexico job, following Ricardo Feretti's time in charge.

Mourinho cleared by FA over Carneiro incident

    1986012_heroa.jpg

The Football Association have cleared Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho of any wrongdoing after he was accused of using abusive language towards club doctor Eva Carneiro.

The former Real Madrid manager was visibly unhappy with Dr. Careneiro during the Blues's 2-2 draw with Swansea City on the openind day of the season, but the FA have announced it "is satisfied that the words used do not constitute discriminatory language under FA Rules".

Carneiro, who was downgraded from her position and axed from the Chelsea dugout for treating Eden Hazard in the dying minutes of the match, has since left Stamford Bridge following the incident and is reportedly taking legal action against the club.

Speaking after the draw with Swansea, Mourinho voiced his frustration at the decision to enter the field: "I wasn't happy with my medical staff because even if you are a medical doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game," he said.

"You have to know that when you have one player less and, in the end, you go on to the pitch to assist a player then you must be sure that a player has a serious problem."I was sure that Eden didn't have a serious problem. He had a knock and was very tired.

"My medical department left me with eight fit players in a counter-attack after a set piece and we were worried we didn't have enough players left."

Boateng to begin training with AC Milan

    kevin-prince-boateng-fc-schalke-04-real-madrid-champions-league-02182015_14pt6oe5nhve51rj5zqoldol79.jpg

Kevin-Prince Boateng is set to start training with AC Milan until the end of 2015, paving the way for the Ghana international to return to the Serie A club permanently.

Boateng and team-mate Sidney Sam were indefinitely suspended by Schalke following their 2-0 Bundesliga defeat at Koln in May

A proposed switch to Sporting then broke down in August due to a disagreement over the player's image rights, with the 28-year-old now opting to train with the Italian club after having previously expressed his openness to return to the club he represented between 2010 and 2013.

A brief statement on Milan's official website on Wednesday read: "Kevin-Prince Boateng, from Thursday until December 31, will train with the first team at Milanello."

However, he would be unable to represent the Rossoneri competitively in this period given he is under contract at Schalke until the end of this season, and so is only expected to feature in friendly and reserve-team matches during his extended trial period.

The 28-year-old is the second controversial talent to return to Milanello under new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic's watch, with Mario Balotelli currently on a season-long loan at San Siro from Liverpool.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Benfica: Gaitan sends Portuguese side top

    2009052_heroa.jpg

Goals from Nicolas Gaitan and Goncalo Guedes secured a surprise 2-1 Champions League win for Benfica over Atletico Madrid as the Portuguese side took early control of Group C.The visitors headed to Vicente Calderon having failed to win on their travels this season or beat Spanish opposition in Europe since 1982.

But after falling behind to Angel Correa's 23rd-minute effort, Rui Vitoria's men - who beat Astana on matchday one - struck back either side of the break and survived a late onslaught from the hosts to clinch a potentially vital victory.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone had identified Gaitan as Benfica's main threat in the build-up to the game and will therefore have been disappointed by the way his charges allowed the Argentina midfielder to drift in unmarked at the back post to draw his side level.

And the home defenders failed to heed the warning as it was Gaitan who provided a delightful assist for what proved to be the winner from Guedes.

The 2014 beaten finalists threw everything they had at the visitors in the latter stages, but a combination of poor finishing and some fine saves from Julio Cesar ensured they tasted defeat for just the fourth time in their last 25 home European ties.In what was a pulsating tie, the goalmouth action started almost immediately.

In-form Benfica striker Jonas beat three defenders on a mazy dribble before dragging his shot wide six minutes in, while Tiago's goal-bound effort was deflected wide at the other end moments later.

The visitors went close again when Guedes beat Jan Oblak to a ball on the edge of the Atletico area, but saw his curling shot cleared off the line by Filipe Luis who was perfectly positioned to spare his goalkeeper's blushes.A volley from Jackson Martinez that looped over the bar was Atletico's immediate response, but they were not to be denied for long.

Antoine Griezmann has been in sparkling form for the Spanish side this season and the Frenchman provided the cushioned assist for Correa who gleefully rifled past Julio Cesar from close range.

The Liga side came agonisingly close to doubling their advantage soon after as Martinez struck the woodwork and was then foiled by Cesar having been picked out by another fine cross from Griezmann.

With Atletico rampant it seemed inevitable they would extend their lead before the break, but Benfica retained some threat on the counter-attack and managed to level matters in the 36th minute.

The hosts failed to deal with a ball driven in from the right by Andreas Samaris, allowing it to travel all the way across the box to the far post where the onrushing Gaitan slammed it first time past Oblak.

Simeone's men made a strong start to the second half, only to be undone by a classic sucker punch as Gaitan got away down the left, picked out Guedes and the Portugal Under-20 international steered home at the far post.

Shortly before the hour mark, Benfica were indebted to Cesar as he produced a stunning double save to deny Martinez and Correa, while a fine block from Luisao kept out a goal-bound strike from the luckless Martinez moments later.

Simeone introduced Fernando Torres for the final quarter, but the former Chelsea man was unable to bag what would have been his 100th goal for the club as the visitors hung on for maximum points.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-2 Manchester City: Aguero penalty secures late win for Pellegrini's men

    2009432_heroa.jpg

Sergio Aguero broke Borussia Monchengladbach's hearts from the penalty spot as Manchester City secured a 2-1 comeback win in Champions League Group D on Wednesday.

Following on from a chastening 4-1 Premier League loss at Tottenham on Saturday, Manuel Pellegrini's team were largely woeful defensively as Monchengladbach thrilled a fervent crowd on their first home match in Europe's top competition for 37 years.

City were indebted to Joe Hart, who brilliantly denied forward Raffael on a number of occasions – most notably from a 19th-minute spot-kick..

A deserved and stylish opening goal arrived nine minutes into the second half from Lars Stindl, heightening the pressure on City who, like the hosts, lost their opening group match..

Nicolas Otamendi endured much of the Bundesliga side's attacking storm but found respite to net a 65th-minute equaliser..

His compatriot Aguero suffered frustrations similar to those of Raffael in front of goal from open play but held his nerve from 12 yards in the 90th minute, sending Yann Sommer the wrong way after being fouled by Fabian Johnson.

Probing for early vulnerability in a City defence that proved so porous at White Hart Lane, Johnson drove towards goal and skilfully laid off for Raffael, who sliced it off target.

It was a thrilling, if cavalier, start to the contest and City should have taken a fifth-minute lead when Raheem Sterling cut a low ball across from the left and Sommer denied Aguero from point-blank range.

Patrick Herrmann shot wide on a lightning counter-attack and Raffael passed up an even better opportunity to put the hosts in front, blasting his penalty too close to Hart following Otamendi's clumsy foul on the Brazilian forward.

Hart should have had an assist to his name moments later when Aguero latched onto his raking ball downfield but fired past the post.

The Argentina international manufactured space to have an attempt in the 29th minute but the result was the same, with Sommer untroubled.

A shambolic and overly exposed City defence were indebted to Hart as he superbly frustrated Raffael twice more before the break, while Monchengladbach midfielder Stindl was booked for a dive in the box despite replays suggesting Fernandinho made contact.

Yaya Toure, substituted with a tight hamstring at Tottenham and wholly ineffective here, was replaced by Fernando for the start of the second half as Raffael and Hart resumed their duel.

The outcome was familiar – the England goalkeeper excelling himself after Raffael sprung City's flimsy high line - but Hart was finally beaten in the 54th minute.

City left-back Aleksandar Kolarov allowed Julian Korb ample room on the right to pick out Stindl, who swept home a low finish.

The visiting centre-backs found the ideal way to atone for their ordeal at the other end by combining to equalise 11 minutes later.

Martin Demichelis looked to have turned Kevin De Bruyne's corner over the line and Korb shovelled the ball as far as Otamendi, whose rasping shot deflected into the net off Andreas Christensen.

Pellegrini's side carried by far the greater threat in the closing stages but had to wait until the death to seal all three points, with Johnson the villain after a corner from substitute Jesus Navas was sloppily dealt with.

A cool Aguero settled matters to leave City level on points with Sevilla and three behind their matchweek one conquerors Juventus, with Monchengladbach desperately unlucky to not get off the mark.

CSKA Moscow 3-2 PSV: Doumbia double downs Dutch

    2008642_heroa.jpg

A brace from Seydou Doumbia was enough to help CSKA Moscow overcome 10-man PSV 3-2 for their first points in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Ahmed Musa opened the scoring in the eighth minute before Doumbia netted his double to put their team into a commanding lead, though the latter missed a penalty.

Nevertheless, Phillip Cocu's men very nearly turned the result around with a valiant second-half fightback led by Maxime Lestienne, who netted a pair of goals of his own.

The result, coupled with Manchester United triumphing 2-1 at home to Wolfsburg, means all four teams in Group B now have three points to their name.

PSV did the double over CSKA during the group stages of the 2007-08 Champions League, while they came into the contest having won five of their last six outings in all competitions.

However, any hopes they had of recording back-to-back victories at the start of a Champions League campaign for the first time in their history were hurt with a woeful first-half showing.

They fell behind in the eighth minute when Zoran Tosic's inswinging corner from the right was allowed to drop to the feet of Musa, who turned the ball into the net after reacting faster than any of the PSV players around him.

CSKA doubled their advantage when Doumbia finished off Mario Fernandes' perfect right-wing cross, his looping header going up and over the outstretched right arm of Jeroen Zoet in the visiting goal.

Doumbia's second of the game came from the spot, Zoet being sent the wrong way after he had conceded the foul by halting Tosic's charge towards goal with an ill-timed lunge.

Arias' careless trip on Musa inside the area presented Doumbia with the chance to complete his hat-trick before the break, yet the forward lifted his second penalty over the top.

The miss looked like it could prove costly as Phillip Cocu's team finally came to life after the interval.Igor Akinfeev had to tip away a goal-bound curler from the right boot of Luciano Narsingh, though there was nothing the CSKA captain could do to stop Lestienne tapping home a low cross from Adam Maher on the hour mark.

The same combination opened up the Russians again to cut the deficit in half eight minutes later, Maher's square pass providing Lestienne with the opportunity to lash home a left-footed strike into the top right corner.

But, the momentum PSV had been building was halted by the dismissal of Arias, who saw yellow for a second time when he fouled Musa near the left touchline as CSKA held on to secure all three points.

Juventus 2-0 Sevilla: Morata and Zaza net in comfortable win

    alvaro-morata-juventus-sevilla-uefa-champions-league-30092015_uetu709p92ey1eov5ghsm6lbz.jpg

Alvaro Morata made it two goals in as many Champions League games this season as he scored in Juventus’ 2-0 defeat of Seviila.
The victory was deserved after an all-action Juventus performance that barely gave Sevilla a look in, and Morata's effort saw him equal Alessandro Del Piero's record of having scored in five consecutive Champions League matches for the club.

Despite managing just one win in their first six Serie A games, Juventus are now two-for-two in the competition, Morata adding a second crucial goal to the winner he hit at Manchester City two weeks earlier.

The Spaniard rose above two defenders to score with a placed header four minutes before half-time, and Simone Zaza netted a second with a solo run and finish three minutes from the end.

Sevilla might have hoped the setting of Juventus Stadium would inspire them, following their 2014 Europa League final victory at the same venue, but the Spanish outfit were given a lesson in Champions League football by their Italian opponents.

Paul Pogba was gifted the game’s first shooting chance within 30 seconds of kick-off when played in by Morata, but the Frenchman lacked his usual composure and lofted his shot over the bar.

In a cauldron of noise, the home side started the game at a frenetic pace and Hernanes bent a shot just wide of Sergio Rico’s net with the Sevilla goalkeeper at full stretch.

The presence of Sami Khedira, making his Juventus debut, seemed to energise the home crowd and he made a good first impression when he received a pass from the marauding Juan Cuadrado and played a perfect lay-off to Paulo Dybala, who whipped a wicked, curling shot just wide from 20 yards.

Cuadrado was constantly involved, and his wing play down the right - along with that of Patrice Evra down the left - stretched Sevilla, who barely got out of their own half for much of the first period.

Juventus’ high line allowed Khedira to play in an advanced role, and he bombed into the box where he cut the ball back to Dybala, but his shot was well blocked by Marco Andreolli.

But just before half-time, Sevilla's previously steadfast defence was broken when Andrea Barzagli’s high cross found the leaping Morata, who rose above Grzegorz Krychowiak and Andreolli to place a header into the corner of the net.

There was no let-up in Juventus attacks after the break, and Dybala drew a good save from Rico when he looked to finish a brilliant, expansive passing move with a quick run and shot.

By the hour mark, the tempo had dropped, but Juventus continued to control the game, and Sevilla struggled to find Jose Antonio Reyes in attack, despite the constant energy and effort of Yevhen Konoplyanka.

A foul by Steven N'Zoni on Dybala gave Juventus a free-kick right on the edge of the box, and Dybala blasted a powerful shot that Rico could only parry away for a corner.

Dybala was denied again moments later when he slid in to meet Evra’s cross, only for Krychowiak to get there ahead of him and clear the danger.

Cuadrado stung the palms of Rico with a fierce drive from distance as Juventus used attack as an effective strategy to defend their lead, before Zaza, who came on as a substitute for Morata, broke clear and ran all of fifty yards before slotting the ball past Rico to seal a clinical victory for Juventus.

:love:Manchester United 2-1 Wolfsburg: Mata shines as Van Gaal's men come from behind

    2009152_heroa.jpg

Manchester United kickstarted their Champions League campaign by edging out Wolfsburg 2-1 in an entertaining Group B clash at Old Trafford.

Goals from Juan Mata and Chris Smalling proved the perfect riposte to Daniel Caligiuri's fourth-minute opener as Louis van Gaal's men took the spoils on Wednesday.

United headed into the fixture desperate to secure all three points, having fallen to a 2-1 loss at PSV in their opening group game.

However, they were stunned when Caligiuri gave the Bundesliga side an early lead to raise hopes they could follow up their win over CSKA Moscow by claiming another three points.

But the home side responded superbly and, having missed a series of good chances, levelled when Mata converted from the penalty spot after Caligiuri's handball.

Smalling then slid home a second just after the interval, with United clinging on thereafter to get up and running in Group B.

The Premier League side got off to a terrible start as the visitors caught them out by taking an early lead.

Caligiuri superbly cut in from the right wing and, after some neat one-touch interplay, received a through-ball back from Max Kruse. The striker, profiting on being played onside by Antonio Valencia, controlled and curled a composed finish around David De Gea.

The hosts almost levelled soon after going behind when Dante headed Mata's goal-bound effort around the post.

Anthony Martial was next to threaten, utilising quick feet to beat Ricardo Rodriguez and Dante before hammering just wide.

The Frenchman continued to look United's biggest danger, epitomised by him easily beating Rodriguez and crossing for Wayne Rooney - only for United's skipper to somehow miss the target from eight yards.

Their frustration continued for the home side when Memphis Depay spurned another golden chance, heading straight at Diego Benaglio from Mata's fine pass.

A deserved equaliser finally came in the 34th minute, with Mata sending Benaglio the wrong way after Caligiuri had handled his effort in the area.

Depay should have made it 2-1 before the break when his effort was kept out by Benaglio, but United were in front when Smalling netted after 53 minutes.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's scuffed effort fell to Mata and the Spaniard's sublime back-heeled flick over the top left the centre-back to slide an effort into the corner.

Wolfsburg offered a quick reminder of their threat, however, when Caligiuri's stinging effort forced De Gea into a smart stop.

The visitors continued to look a considerable threat, with substitute Andre Schurrle hitting narrowly wide.

De Gea's goal was increasingly under siege as Wolfsburg pressed forward in search of an equaliser.

Yet United tightened up despite the odd frenetic moment and held on to ensure all four teams in Group B have three points.
