Ancelotti out of Liverpool running: I'll be back next season

    carlo-ancelotti-real-madrid-ludogorets-uefa-champions-league-12092014_6t19ni3wxfnq1szbxkfy5yn3j.jpg

Former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out a move to Liverpool - but says he intends to return to management next season.

Ancelotti had been touted as a possible replacement for Brendan Rodgers at Anfield, but Goal understands frontrunner Jurgen Klopp will pen a three-year-deal with the club on Thursday.

The 56-year-old, who has been out of work since his sacking from the Bernabeu at the end of the 2014-15 season, claims he is happy to take a season out of the spotlight before taking on a new role.

He told the Associated Press at the Inspiring Leaders Awards on Tuesday night: "I enjoy my time now but of course I want to come back to manage - to work - because it is my passion.

"I want to take my time to rest, but next season I am ready."

If I break the record, Neymar will do it again anyway - Kaka

    kaka-and-neymar-cropped_1wrjnkl7l8uss171074nir2m18.jpg

Kaka is on the verge of becoming Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup qualifying, but believes Neymar will just break the record sooner rather than later anyway.

The Orlando City midfielder has been called up for Brazil's upcoming qualifiers due to the injury sustained by Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho.

Kaka currently has 10 goals in World Cup qualifiers and just needs two more to overtake current holders Romario and Zico, who have 11 each.

"It will mean a lot to me," Kaka said. "If I score two goals now and become the all-time scorer of the qualifiers, in a team with so many great players at a high level, it will mean a lot to me.

"I have been aware of this feat since the 2010 qualifiers but didn't know how many I needed.

"Now I know I need two, but then Neymar will come and run away with it anyway."

Despite scoring 46 goals for the national team since his debut in 2010, Neymar has never played in a World Cup qualifier due to Brazil's automatic qualification for hosting the 2014 tournament.

Even if Kaka breaks the record in the games against Chile and Venezuela, Neymar will still have a long way to go before reaching the feat.

Wanyama has 'forgotten' about failed Tottenham transfer

    victorwanyama-cropped_1xjnfgbh5nv8u14d6ru9dwlego.jpg

Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama says he is totally focused on his club after his proposed move to Tottenham fell through.

The 24-year-old was keen to join Spurs in the summer but his club, who had already seen the big-money departures of Nathaniel Clyne and Morgan Schneiderlin, insisted he would not follow them out of the door.

The midfielder was left out of the club's clash against Norwich City at the end of August with Ronald Koeman claiming he was not 'mentally and physically good enough to play', but Wanyama insists that is all behind him.

"I just don’t want to remember that situation," he told the Southern Daily Echo.

"Yes, sure, now I’ve forgotten what happened. I’m now progressing on my club and it’s been good, so I’m looking forward to putting in good performances."

Southampton moved into the top half of the table on Saturday after a 3-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - a result which Wanyama feels is one of the best he has played in since his switch from Celtic in 2013.

"We expected a very very tough game and we showed what we can do," he said.

"I think this is one of the best away wins. They’re a really really difficult team to beat, especially at Stamford Bridge, so we were very glad to have the maximum points."

Luis Enrique the guest of honour for U2 gig

    2022962_heroa.jpg

With many of his charges away from the club on international duty, Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has the chance to put his feet up.

And while Enrique is no stranger to the cameras as he paces up and down the Blaugrana technical area, on Tuesday he was just one of the thousands of U2 fans who flocked to see the Irish band live.

The 45-year-old was snapped outside the gig alongside Jan Riera, member of Catalan band Els Catarres.

The coach is not the only Barcelona figure to see Bono and Co. in action - on Monday Gerard Pique was in attendance at the band's iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour, with wife Shakira.

After Saturday's painful reverse against Sevilla, the last thing Enrique and Barca will want is to get Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of.

The Troubles are far from beginning for the treble-winners, however, and once La Liga reconvenes after the international break they should not have to wait long for another Beautiful Day.

That's right, With or Without You, Lionel Messi!

Martial form is not surprising, says Cabaye

Crystal Palace midfielder Yohan Cabaye is unsurprised by the strong start France team-mate Anthony Martial has made at Manchester United.

Martial, 19, arrived at Old Trafford as a shock £36million signing from Monaco in September, but has taken little time to settle in, scoring three Premier League goals in four games for title-challengers United.

Cabaye, who is with France as they prepare for friendlies against Armenia and Denmark, has praised the maturity of Martial following his high-profile move and has backed him to continue his goal-scoring form.

"They speak about him [Martial in England]. I am not surprised about how quickly he fits in and what he’s able to do on the pitch. He’s very talented," he told reporters.

"He’s very young but by the way he plays and behaves on and outside the pitch, he seems very calm and adult. He could manage all the fuss about his transfer and the fees.

"At the end of the day, the poor guy did not ask for nothing in term of the amount spent but it comes back on him.

"He’s doing very well. I wish he’ll keep doing that way. He has great abilities. I hope he’ll leave his mark on the Premier League."

Ibrahimovic reveals 'Zlatan: The Movie' talks

    1979562_heroa.jpg

It seems footballer-based movies are all the rage. Cristiano Ronaldo's documentary is due out in November, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be about to follow him into the world of Hollywood.

As one of the game's most unique characters, the chance to see the Paris Saint-Germain striker profiled on the big screen would surely interest supporters worldwide.

And the Sweden international has not ruled out a feature-length documentary being made in the future.

"Everything is about what I want to do. If I want to. So we'll have to see," he told reporters.

"It would have been fun if something came around. But we have to see, a lot of other things have to click.

"You can't just say 'I want to' and somebody tells you 'we can do it'. But discussions are being held."

So there you have it - expect Zlatan to picking up multiple Oscars in the not too distant future.

Memphis unmoved by Manchester United criticism

Memphis Depay says he is paying no attention to criticism after his underwhelming start to life at Manchester United.

The winger snubbed the press as he reported for national team duty ahead of Netherlands' crucial Euro 2016 qualifying matches, stating "I don't talk to written media".

He did speak to Dutch TV show Voetbal Inside though and insisted he is not interested in the criticism he has received after scoring just one goal in eight league games in England.

"I just let the criticism slide off me. I'm not really paying attention to it," he said.

"Only constructive criticism can do something for you. I just let the rest go. Everyone will have an opinion, but that is part of life."

Netherlands must win both of their games against Kazakhstan and Czech Republic and hope Turkey drop points in their matches if the Dutch are to qualify for the Euro 2016 playoffs and Memphis is confident of doing it.

"Everyone has confidence that Turkey will drop points and we can win the two games," he added.

Cristiano Ronaldo will retire at Real Madrid - Ancelotti

    cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_6el73tdrb16t1x630mxvrbiss.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti believes Cristiano Ronaldo is destined to stay at Real Madrid until the end of his career.

Ronaldo has a contract with Madrid until June 2018, but has recently been linked with his former club Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

Nevertheless, ex-Madrid boss Ancelotti would be surprised if his former pupil were to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.

"He etched his name into the record books at Real Madrid the other day when he equaled Raul's goalscoring record," Ancelotti told Le Parisien.

"I cannot imagine him leaving Real Madrid.

"I think he will stay at Madrid until the end of his career. Everybody at the club loves him."

Ronaldo netted twice in Madrid's 2-0 Champions League win over Malmo earlier this month to equal Raul's tally of 323 goals and seems set to become Madrid's sole all-time top goalscorer after the international break.

Ancelotti also had his say on Angel Di Maria, another player he coached at Madrid and who joined Paris Saint-Germain this year after an unsuccessful season at Manchester United.

"Di Maria will help PSG progress, because he is a team player more than anything else. He is not a selfish player at all," the Italian added.

"I played him in midfield at Madrid because we needed to find a solution after Sami Khedira got injured. He did very well in midfield.

"But I do not think that is his best position. He is even better in attack. He could play on either wing and even as a centre forward."

Arsenal can win the Premier League title this season, says Ozil

    mesutozil-cropped_1ovcxdf59t0n01jg0nqz0xyfhq.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil believes the club can win the Premier League this season.

The Gunners showed what they are capable of at the weekend as they beat Manchester United 3-0 to climb to second place in the league and just two points behind table-toppers Manchester City.

Ozil believes his side can go all the way in the English top flight this campaign as they bid to secure their first Premier League title since 2003-04.

"We have a great team with a lot of world-class players," he told Bild.

"Our goal is to win the Premier League title. I think we can achieve it this season if we do not get any major injuries. But the season is still long."

Conversely, Arsene Wenger's men have made a slow start to their Champions League campaign after losing their opening two fixtures, yet Ozil remains optimistic they can pick up two wins against rivals Bayern.

"It is true that there is a lot of pressure on us in the Champions League. We can beat Bayern, though, if we play at the same level as against Manchester United," he said.

"I was a bit surprised to see Bayern beat Dortmund 5-1. Bayern's results show that they are in great form.

"We have a lot of respect for Bayern, but we are not afraid of them. We are playing at home and we know how to score goals and be successful against Bayern.

"Of course, it will not be easy, but we have the potential to beat any team."

Klopp can be Liverpool 'immortal' - Hamann

    jurgenklopp-cropped_1bq837v446z8s1itrnc963bio8.jpg

Jurgen Klopp can become an "immortal" at Liverpool if he is appointed manager, according to former midfielder Didi Hamann.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Klopp is expected to be named Brendan Rodgers' successor on a three-year deal with Goal understanding he will fly to Liverpool on Thursday to finalise the details.

Hamann, a Champions League winner at Liverpool, has backed his German countryman to be a success and feels that if Klopp was given time to settle, he could lead the club back to their former glories.

"I know managers always say they know all about the history and tradition of clubs when they arrive, but no-one can really be expected to know that when they first come in," he is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"It took me maybe six, 12 months to realise exactly what Liverpool was all about.

"When I went to my first Hillsborough memorial service, I started to think a bit deeper about what this club truly means, and what it represents.

"If he gives himself 12 months to take it all in and understand fully what the club and the fans are all about, then I really do believe he can be an immortal at Liverpool.

"Jurgen is a top-class manager, and he has the passion to connect to the people."

I have to get the better of Schweinsteiger - Ireland's Meyler

    schweinsteiger-cropped_9xgnabiwxj5k1m2hkiyrtcg9r.jpg

Republic of Ireland midfielder David Meyler acknowledged he must get the better of Bastian Schweinsteiger if his side are to be successful against Germany.

Martin O'Neill's men take on the world champions in Dublin on Thursday, before facing Poland in their final Euro 2016 qualifier on Sunday.

Any outcome is still possible for Ireland - they could finish in their current position of third and take a play-off spot, catch second-placed Poland for an automatic place or drop to fourth behind Scotland, meaning they would miss out on a ticket to France.

Meyler, 26, is aware of the scale of the challenge he faces by coming up against Germany skipper and Manchester United star Schweinsteiger, but is optimistic about his own chances in that duel as well as his team's possibilities for the two games.

"Schweinsteiger has done it for a long time at the top level - he has been around," said the Hull City midfielder. "He has won a hundred odd caps, won a World Cup, won the Champions League, won several Bundesliga titles, so you look at players like him and you aspire to be like that and achieve what he has.

"But at the end of the day, if you are given an opportunity to play against him, it is just me versus him and I have got to get on top of him. I have got to get the better of him.

"A lot of them don't like physicality, but that is just the way it is. They like to get the ball down and pass it and don't like too much contact, so we need to get into their faces and make it tough for them, make it a tough evening, make it hard work.

"Why can't we catch Poland? We have still got to play them after Germany."

Aguero ready to step into Messi's No.10 shirt

    lionel-messi-sergio-aguero-birthday_18ccaagiin0lz1ps35j29pd9uh.jpg

Sergio Aguero has revealed that he will take to the field on Thursday against Ecuador in Lionel Messi's No. 10 jersey, and pledged that Argentina will do everything possible to minimise the star's absence.

The shirt became famous for the Albiceleste thanks to 1986 World Cup legend Diego Maradona, and has become the Barcelona star's personal property almost ever since he broke into the national team.

And Aguero confirmed that he will take on the mythical number during the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay.

"I spoke to the kitman and he told me it is obligatory - someone has to use it because the numbers go from 1 to 23," El Kun told La Nacion.

"I wore it for the first time against Bosnia, in a friendly in the United States, and Leo said: 'When I am not around, Kun has to use it.' Then he started to send me messages: 'Are you going to wear it? You're not going to chicken out?'

"Now every time he is absent it is up to me to wear it. I am happy to pull on the shirt, but it obviously belongs to him."

Messi will miss both Argentina's opening games in the Conmebol campaign, and is also a doubt for the second round of fixtures in November against Brazil and Colombia.

"It is a bit strange because Leo has always been here with us, but these things happen in football, we have great players here and we can do well without him," Aguero explained.

"Obviously it is different without him but we can still make a good start.

"Messi is Messi, he is irreplaceable. But there is a great team here which can make his absence felt less sharply. Now the key is winning, picking up three points. We are playing at home, it is a long time since Argentina has seen us and we have to play well from the start to gain confidence."

Rooney sits out of England training

    wayne-rooney-cropped_18z38445g6qiw1us8e9uosocij.jpg

Wayne Rooney remains a doubt for England's Euro 2016 qualifiers against Estonia and Lithuania as the Manchester United striker pulled out of training on Wednesday.

Rooney suffered a knock during the Red Devils' 3-0 reverse to Arsenal, and was unable to train with the rest of Roy Hodgson's squad on Tuesday.

The following day gave a similar story, as England confirmed that the 29-year-old joined Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey on the sidelines for Wednesday's morning practice.

Hodgson and his medical staff will have to decide whether to risk Rooney for Friday's clash against Estonia, which was poised to be a special day for the forward.

Rooney is set to be honoured at Wembley after breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's long-standing record for goals scored in the Three Lions shirt.

The player netted his 50th international strike in a win over Switzerland in September.

Spain, not Brazil - Thiago back to where he always wanted to be

    thiago-alcantara-spain_k32ba239kdnr1clg9bib6aymh.jpg

I first met Thiago Alcantara in 2007. Back then, he was still playing for the Juvenil A team in Barcelona and I was impressed by the maturity of that boy who, even in puberty, was more clear about his life than most adults. Most surprising of all was how sure he was that he wanted to represent Spain and not Brazil or Italy.

Born in Bari to a Brazilian father, Thiago grew up in Spain and could choose between any of the three national sides. But even though his father was a World Cup winner for the Canarinha, Thiago never had any doubts.

"For Brazil, winning the World Cup is a sentence," lamented the Italian-born midfielder who inherited a good dose of Brazilian culture - and a passport - from father Mazinho but grew up in Vigo and later Barcelona.

"I have lived and grown up here in Spain," said the youngster who would go on to impress with several explosive performances at the beginning of his Camp Nou career before being unfairly labelled as "arrogant" and "selfish" by a sector of the press in Barcelona who had barely seen him play, let alone talk to him.

In 2010-11, Thiago accepted with no qualms when Pep Guardiola told him he would be better off returning to the youth team for more minutes under Luis Enrique instead of sitting on the bench. Victor Valdes, for example, had refused to return to Barca B when ordered to do so years earlier by Louis van Gaal. He also took a public dressing down from Guardiola on the chin after he was criticised by the Catalan coach for his dancing celebrations in the 5-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.

There was never any resentment towards Pep and when he felt abandonded by Barcelona in 2012-13, he decided to follow Guardiola to Munich, becoming the only player who has sat in all of the dressing rooms with the Catalan coach: at Barca B, later with the first team at Camp Nou and then with Bayern.

Thiago waited patiently for his opportunity at Barca, but saw his progress halted as the Catalans brought in Cesc Fabregas and he moved to Bayern in 2013, in search of the minutes he believed he needed at 22 to keep on improving and become one of the best midfielders in the world.

He knew he had the conditions to succeed and that character is part of football, but many confused that personality with arrogance. They were wrong.

While some had doubts, Spain valued him highly. An international since the age of 15, he made his debut in 2011 as he replaced club colleague Andres Iniesta in a defeat against Italy. And it was against the Azzurri that he made his last appearance for La Roja - a victory against the Italians in March, 2014.

A series of injuries since then have seen him miss out at international level, including the World Cup last year, although at least he was spared from Spain's embarrassing exit in the first round at Brazil 2014.

Eight years have passed since that meeting opposite the famous fountain in Canaletes, where Barcelona celebrate their titles. "I only play to make people enjoy themselves," he said on that day in 2007. Back then, of course, Spain could only dream of World Cup success. "Imagine if we could win a World Cup with Spain," he added. "That would be a huge party and I would love to give that type of joy to the people."

Back now where he has always wanted to be, Thiago's teenage dream of success with Spain starts again on Friday.

Fast-paced England can go far at Euro 2016 - King

England are in good shape to go on a long run at Euro 2016 in France next year, according to their former defender Ledley King.

Roy Hodgson's men have already booked their ticket to the tournament, having won all eight of their Group E qualification matches so far and will attempt to make it a perfect 10 in their last two encounters against Estonia and Lithuania.

King - whose international career spanned between 2002 and 2010 - has seen significant improvements in England's displays and feels the faster pace of their attack could prove to be a huge benefit at the finals next year, which begin in June.

"I think there is a good youthful squad at the moment," he told Omnisport.

"Obviously previous tournaments were disappointing but I believe the players would have learned a lot from that and will go into the Euros feeling encouraged about the possibilities of going far in the tournament.

"The team has had a little bit of time now to really get together, gel more and get used to Hodgson's style of play.

"What I like about the team is they seem to be trying to play with pace and I think that is going to be England's best route to going there and doing well. It is important they play at that Premier League tempo and try to really keep that tempo high.

"I don't feel that the slow football really suits the English style so I have been pleased to see that is the style of football they are playing and qualifying has been very good."

England's match against Estonia takes place at Wembley on Friday, before the trip to Lithuania on Monday.

Low: I can see why Liverpool want Klopp

Joachim Low says it makes sense for Liverpool to have Jurgen Klopp at the top of their list of candidates as they look to replace Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irish coach was dismissed from his role at the Anfield club after Sunday's 1-1 draw against Everton and ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Klopp has been the favourite to replace him.

And Low says it is natural for the Reds to pursue his compatriot and believes he would succeed on Merseyside.

"I can see exactly why Liverpool want Klopp," the Germany coach told reporters ahead of their upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Ireland.

"He would be a great addition to any team."

Germany need just one point to secure qualification for next summer's tournament but Low is targeting three points as they look to finish top of Group D.

"We expect a team that knows how to defend very well," he said.

"We played Ireland several times over the last years and it was never easy. Yes, we won 6-1 once, but the rest were tough matches.

"I consider them stronger physically and offensively than Scotland. They can make it hard on their opponents and they know how to defend between the spaces.

"We know their mentality, they fight until the very last minute.

"We need to find our own solutions and we thought about it: How can we unsettle them and keep them away from the counter? If we manage to do that, we will win this match."

Mata: Chelsea can still win the Premier League

Manchester United star Juan Mata feels his former club Chelsea should still be considered contenders for the Premier League title.

Jose Mourinho has admitted the champions will struggle to retain their title after a start to the season that has seen them pick up just eight points from as many games, the Chelsea boss insisting a top-four finish has become their priority.

Mata, though, does not think the west Londoners should be discounted from the race to win the trophy when they still have so much time to recover their form.

"Chelsea are in an unusual situation," the 27-year-old, who swapped Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford in January 2014, told Onda Cero.

"It is somewhat circumstantial and I do not think it will go on for an extended period of time. They do not have a squad that should have them in that position in the Premier League.

"We have seen the gap of 10 points arrive in two months and I think Chelsea will come out of that situation quickly. In fact, I do not rule them out of the title fight."

Mata spent two-and-a-half seasons with the Blues prior to joining United and said Mourinho, who was in charge for his final season at the club, is just one of many big characters in the game today.

The Spain international continued: "He is not the most incredible character I have ever encountered in football. There are many characters in football, though perhaps they are not all as well known.

"Journalists always say in England that he gives them a lot of work and play, so I guess he is good for journalists."
