Ancelotti backs 'complete' France for Euro 2016 glory

    carloancelotti-cropped_5m7e4sjttmv21x7yyellew876.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti has lauded France as a "complete" team and backed Didier Deschamps' men for Euro 2016 glory ahead of Spain and world champions Germany.

The Italian, who coached for a year-and-a-half in France with Paris Saint-Germain until June 2013, is adamant that the current crop of players available to Deschamps leaves few weaknesses.

And although Ancelotti acknowledged that the likes of Spain and Germany will likely provide stern tests, he believes having home advantage could swing things in France's favour.

"I think that the France can win the Euros," he told Telefoot. "There's plenty of competition, Germany and Spain, for example.

Ancelotti was particularly glowing of three players he has worked with before, highlighting the importance of his former PSG and Real Madrid squad members.

"[But] it [France] has a really complete team with very good players such as Blaise [Matuidi], Karim [Benzema] and Raphael [Varane] and they will play at home, which is very important."

Poland 2-1 Republic of Ireland: Lewandowski header seals qualification for Poles

    robertlewandowski-cropped_i29gxsqak52c1m242vjmw327n.jpg

Poland secured automatic qualification for Euro 2016 as Robert Lewandowski's 13th goal in Group D sealed a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland, who finished with 10 men.

Grzegorz Krychowiak's fine strike gave Poland the lead, but Martin O'Neill's men hit back less than three minutes later through a Jon Walters penalty.

Lewandowski proved Poland's hero once again, however, heading home to equal the tournament goalscoring record set by Northern Ireland's David Healy back in Euro 2008 qualifying.

Ireland brought on Robbie Keane and Aiden McGeady as they pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but it was Richard Keogh who spurned their best chance to level the match in the closing minutes.

Poland ultimately held firm to secure second spot in the group, a point behind Germany, while O'Neill's side – who had John O'Shea dismissed for a second booking in stoppage time – must wait to discover who they will meet in the play-offs.

The first half started in understandably nervy fashion, but Poland took the lead through a moment of real quality.
Kamil Grosicki aimed a corner to Krychowiak on the edge of the area and the Sevilla midfielder took a touch before rifling a half-volley through the crowd and into the bottom-right corner.

The home side's lead lasted barely three minutes, however, as Michal Pazdan caught Shane Long with a high foot right on the edge of the box, allowing Walters to stroke home a confident penalty.

Poland were unhappy to see the spot-kick awarded as contact looked to have taken place outside the area and the boos rang out again a few moments later as Krzysztof Maczynski's goal was ruled out for offside.

Lewandowski was marshalled well throughout the first 40 minutes, but the captain was ruthless with the first chance that came his way, powering a header past Darren Randolph from 12 yards just before the break after a good cross from Maczynski.

Ireland were dealt a blow shortly after the break when Long was taken off on a stretcher following a robust challenge from Kamil Glik and Randolph kept them in the game with a strong close-range block as Krychowiak broke through on the counter-attack.

O'Neill's side continued to push forward for an equaliser as Poland began to drop deeper, but another quick burst forward gave Lewandowski a sight of goal only for Seamus Coleman to cover his run superbly.

Chances were few and far between for Ireland, but Keogh should really have done better with just nine minutes to go, as he failed to connect properly with a point-blank header and the impressive Lukasz Fabianski made a smart save.

Ireland kept pressing, but their momentum was stalled when O'Shea got his marching orders for bringing down Lewandowski as he looked to break clear.

The defender and Walters – who was booked – are now set to miss the first leg of their play-off as O'Neill's men will be forced to do it the hard way.

Germany 2-1 Georgia: Kruse secures top spot for world champions

    2064772_heroa.jpg

Germany had Max Kruse and Manuel Neuer to thank as they edged through to Euro 2016 in their final qualifier after a nervous 2-1 win over Georgia in Leipzig on Sunday.

The world champions, who needed just a point to be certain of a place in next year's showpiece, missed numerous opportunities to open the scoring in the first half, with Marco Reus the worst culprit in front of goal. Thomas Muller appeared to have settled nerves with a penalty early in the second half, only for Jaba Kankava to equalise within four minutes.

Neuer then proved his quality with a pair of stunning saves to prevent Georgia from going ahead, before substitute Kruse settled a tense win by scoring within three minutes of coming on.

The narrow victory means Germany qualify for the tournament as Group D winners, but Joachim Low's men will know they have to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to add the European crown to their world title.

The hosts made their intent known within two minutes when Muller fired in an early shot from the edge of the box that was saved by Nukri Revishvili, before Toni Kroos flashed a volley wide. The Real Madrid midfielder almost set up Muller with a cleverly-worked free kick, but the Bayern Munich star's stretching effort was just off target.

Low's side continued to attack at pace and Ilkay Gundogan forced Revishvili into a low stop after a neat one-two with Muller. Reus then drew an even better diving stop from the Georgia goalkeeper with a low goal-bound effort.

It was all one-way traffic and Reus missed an absolute sitter with Germany's next chance, somehow blazing over from close range after being sent clean through by a brilliant Muller flick.

Despite Germany's dominance, the fragility of their status in the group was emphasised when Georgia came close to scoring on the break. Valeri Kazaishvili beat Mats Hummels and squared for Tornike Okriashvili, who forced Neuer into an excellent reflex save.

The world champions were soon back on the front foot, but Reus missed another good chance, shooting wide with his left foot after being played in by Gundogan.
The tension was temporarily lifted early in the second half when Germany won a penalty. Ozil drew a foul from Kankava in the corner of the box and Muller calmly stepped up to send Revishvili the wrong way from the resulting spot kick.

Georgia then enjoyed their best period of the match, scoring an equaliser and forcing Neuer to make his second and third brilliant saves of the night. First, Nika Kvekveskiri sent a long-range effort towards the top corner and only a superb one-handed save from the keeper denied him.

From the resulting corner, the visitors ensured Germany's lead had lasted just four minutes. After they had worked a short corner into the box, Germany only half-cleared and were punished when Kankava lashed in an impressive volley, immediately making up for his mistake at the other end.

Georgia almost took the lead when Kazaishvili shot wide after an excellent solo run, before Neuer had to make a brilliant save to push Okriashvili's shot over from point-blank range.Germany finally kicked back into life following those scares and Reus saw a shot pushed past the post by Revishvili with 20 minutes remaining.

Low replaced the ineffective Andre Schurrle - who had replaced the injured Mario Gotze in the starting line-up - with Kruse and the substitute made a stunning impact.

With 11 minutes remaining, Ozil found Kruse in the area and the Wolfsburg forward finished into the bottom corner with an excellent first-time finish.Kroos had a late effort pushed wide by Revishvili as Germany held on to seal their ticket to France.

Lewandowski equals Healy's Euro qualifier scoring record

    robbie-brady-republic-of-ireland-robert-lewandowski-poland_1x7newnr9uquj1lr64fz7argk0.jpg

Robert Lewandowski continued his extraordinary form in front of goal to draw level with Northern Ireland's David Healy as the top goalscorer in a single European Championship qualifying competition, with 13.

A bullet header from the Bayern Munich striker helped Poland secure automatic qualification for Euro 2016 with a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland. The victory marked the third consecutive European finals reached by Adam Nawalka's charges, having made their first appearance as recently as 2008 in the championships.

But all eyes were again on Lewandowski, as he equalled Healy as the most prolific scorer in the qualifiers' history. The Polish hitman opened his Euro 2016 account with five as Gibraltar were blown away 7-0 back in September 2014.

Lewandowski followed up that feat with a hat-trick against Georgia and Poland's only goal in a defeat to Germany, before a double to tie with Scotland left him on the brink of levelling the historic mark.

Low: World-class Neuer saved below-par Germany

    neuer-cropped_1hwy7lbfp0mge1ucbv7q07qjj2.jpg

Germany coach Joachim Low paid tribute to the "world-class" performance of Manuel Neuer in their 2-1 win over Georgia on Sunday to seal a place at Euro 2016.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper made three great saves in Leipzig – one of which came with the scores level at 1-1 – as the world champions made hard work of getting the point they required to reach the tournament in France.

Ultimately, a goal from substitute Max Kruse 11 minutes from time settled nerves after a tense contest had seen Germany waste countless opportunities to put the result beyond doubt.

Low was far from satisfied with the overall performance but did pay tribute to the saves made by Neuer to prevent his side from paying the price for their missed chances.

"We can draw the same conclusions as against Ireland," he told reporters."We have again missed three or four chances at the beginning and then came the frustration. From there, some errors crept in and we had big trouble in the second half.

"Manuel Neuer had to make two or three world-class saves to prevent us from falling behind. We are sometimes not attentive enough. Unfortunately, you have to say we have allowed a few clear chances at the back."In general we can be pleased that we have won the group and managed qualification, but we are not satisfied with the last two games. That is not our standard."

Klopp: I'm no miracle worker - I need time at Liverpool

    jurgen-klopp-liverpool_g0p8f4v11p81pqz7pez9bu89.jpg

Jurgen Klopp has warned expectant Liverpool fans that he's no "miracle worker" and the Anfield club face a huge challenge in 2015-16 following his appointment as manager.

The 48-year-old, who signed a three-year contract with the club on Friday following Brendan Rodgers' sacking, believes he is not under any pressure to deliver in his debut season.

However, Klopp feels turning around the fortunes of the club will not be an easy fix and he must be given the chance to rebuild the side after a disappointing sixth-place finish in the Premier League last year.

“There is no doubt, this is a huge challenge, for me and my coaching team,” he told German newspaper Bild.

“We knew that full well [when we accepted the job]. Liverpool have not had any success for a long time and they’ve changed the manager all the time.

"And now they have appointed a German who is no miracle worker. Progress is not possible without a bit of time.”

Following a successful seven-year spell in charge of Borussia Dortmund, Klopp arrives with a reputation for delivering an attractive style and he hopes to replicate that in England without the need of considerable expenditure.

“I spoke to the people in charge of the club at length. There are no targets for this season, just simply to play football with a recognisable brand," he said.

“Whether there is money to spend in January or not doesn’t interest me. We are only in October and I don’t even know how many games we’ve got until the transfer window opens and therefore we will have a look at the players at our disposal first.”

Lewandowski insists Poland fully deserve Euro 2016 spot

    robert-lewandowski-cropped_17o3ppvzczar31dfnkhd0s03ly.jpg

Robert Lewandowski insists Poland earned their place at Euro 2016 after their decisive 2-1 victory against the Republic of Ireland.

The Bayern Munich star powered home a header late in the first half to give the hosts all three points in Warsaw on Sunday and send them through to the finals along with Germany.

Lewandowski paid tribute to the fans as Poland celebrated on the pitch after the final whistle and backed his side to keep improving ahead of next year's showpiece.

"We deserved to qualify. We were better than Ireland," he said to Polsat Sport.

"There are small details which can improve our game. But this bodes well for the future.

"I believed in these guys. Our goal was always to progress to France in these qualifiers. We deserved an automatic place, not the play-offs.

"I'd like to thank all the fans who believed in us from the very beginning. We felt their support, whether we played in Warsaw or abroad."

Hummels: Germany must seize attacking opportunities

    hummels-cropped_sbsnol42sx2g1if7kwsplnnf3.jpg

Mats Hummels acknowledged Germany must improve in the final third if they are to make an impression at Euro 2016.

The world champions sealed top spot in qualifying Group D with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Georgia on Sunday, with substitute Max Kruse grabbing the winner.

It was a far from convincing result for Joachim Low's side, however, and the Dormund defender insists that the onus is now on the side to become more clinical in front of goal.

"Of course it is annoying if we do not seize the opportunities, because it would make our lives much easier," Hummels said. "This is a matter on which we have to work.

"We knew that the Georgians are technically much stronger than it says [in] the world rankings. This is something that the coach clearly addressed before the game.

"In some situations, the Georgia players were running up very freely with two or three players to us because we were pushing forward as we had not taken our chances. That is hard for any team."

Carvalho issues come-and-get-me plea to Arsenal

    william-carvalho_13r80pvw6f82k1v979burml1p8.jpg

Sporting star William Carvalho has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Arsenal by claiming they have been his dream club since Thierry Henry's heyday.

The central midfielder, 23, was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in the summer, but Arsene Wenger chose not to tinker with his team beyond the solitary signing of goalkeeper Petr Cech.

In a statement that will surely not fall on deaf ears at Arsenal, William has claimed that the era of the Invincibles made him love the Gunners and the Portugal international hinted at a future move to the Premier League.

"I am where I want to be right now, which is Sporting, but if I ever do leave then it's a sign that my work here was well done," he told A Bola. "I dream of winning the Primeira Liga here.

"I prefer not to say too much, but there is a club with which I’ve always been fond of: Arsenal. Because of Thierry Henry, a player with whom I have always enjoyed watching.

"Maybe this is why I look with so much affection to the Premier League."

William, who won the award for the best player at this year's European Under-21 Championship, has a contract at Sporting which expires on June 30, 2018.

Martial DAZZLES in first start for France

    2064452_heroa.jpg

Anthony Martial’s star continued to rise on Sunday evening with a stellar display in his first start for France.

Next summer’s Euro 2016 hosts registered a 2-1 victory thanks to Olivier Giroud’s double in the opening six minutes but it was Martial’s guile and pace which was a constant torment for Denmark.

Since his £36 million arrival at Old Trafford Martial has displayed remarkable composure in possession for a 19-year-old, and that was on show once again in the build-up to Giroud’s opening goal.

The United forward, who operated on the left flank for the 87 minutes he was on the pitch, was allowed too much room to burst towards the edge of Denmark’s area but the weight of the pass into the path of Giroud was perfect, and the Arsenal forward’s scuffed finish squirmed under Kasper Schmeichel.

Martial’s close control at high speed continued to worry the Danish defence and the United forward was France’s only genuine threat with pace from a deeper position behind Giroud.

In the 62nd minute, Martial went close to adding a third for France in a move that was all his own making. Once again, after receiving the ball on the left flank midway in the Dane’s half, the United striker took off at speed and easily glided past Lars Jacobsen. Martial’s bore down on Schmeichel but the Leicester City got down smartly to save the low shot.

Martial was then robbed of registering his second assist of the night. After winning the ball back in midfield, he coolly slipped the ball into the path of Giroud. The Arsenal striker had plenty of time to pick his spot but instead opted to scoop his effort over Schmeichel, and the Denmark goalkeeper was able to save.
The only blot of Martial’s copybook came just before he was substituted. The 19-year-old was found in a bit of space directly on the penalty spot but he cut across his strike and the ball flew over the bar.

But Didier Deschamps would have been encouraged by Martial’s display as he attempts to secure a place in next summer’s squad for Euro 2016. The United forward will get another chance to impress on Saturday as Louis van Gaal’s side face Everton at Goodison Park.

Ancelotti ready to return to the Premier League in 2016

    carlo-ancelotti-cropped_1jy96m4ripre9128wbmjijtptw.jpg

Carlo Ancelotti says it is his ambition to coach in the Premier League again before he retires.

The Italian led Chelsea to a league and FA Cup double in 2009-10 but was relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge after failing to defend either prize the following season.

Having since taken Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title in 2012-13 and Real Madrid to Champions League glory the following season, the 56-year-old - who was linked to Liverpool before the appointment of Jurgen Klopp - is now keen to return to England's top flight.

He gave no clues as to where he will resume coaching, but revealed that from the start of 2016 he will begin considering proposals from any interested parties.

"I dream of an experience in the Premier League, that's the place to work in football with the right pressure," Ancelotti said in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.

"First stop, I want to coach there, but I must also think about the time when I will say enough.

"In the days of Reggiana I told myself that after five years I would say enough. That was 25 years ago and I'm still going.

"For now, I can say that my rest will last until the end of the year. From January onwards, I'll be ready to get back to work.

"I do not know where, I will evaluate any proposal that comes at that time."

No Reus or Aubameyang for Liverpool? Klopp refuses to raid Dortmund

    2053792_heroa.jpg

New Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has claimed he does not intend to sign any Borussia Dortmund players in the foreseeable future.

The Premier League side have been heavily linked with the likes of Marco Reus and Ilkay Gundogan since the appointment of Klopp last week, with the German boss allegedly keen to make the most of his good relationship with the pair by tempting them to Anfield.

Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke already stated that he finds it hard to believe the former coach would approach any players at the Westfalenstadion without the club's consent and Klopp - who has also been linked with a move for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - has now also played down suggestions he is ready to mount a raid on his old side.

"I have no intention whatsoever to lure Dortmund's stars to Liverpool," Klopp told Bild. "I am not interested in how much money I will be allowed to spend in January.

"It is only October and I don't even know how many games there are left until the winter. But we clearly have plenty of games left and we will be taking a look at our own players first."

Expectations are sky-high at Liverpool following the arrival of Klopp, but the former Dortmund boss has stressed he cannot perform miracles and will need time to build his own team.

"There is no doubt about it that a major challenge awaits. But we were well aware of this. Liverpool have not enjoyed much success in recent years and have changed manager a number of times.

"They have brought in a German now, but I am not a miracle worker either. I will need time."

Klopp: I never planned to call myself the normal one

    jurgenklopp-cropped_54g4v8pp4mpf1k28tsfwx2xke.jpg

Jurgen Klopp insists he never planned to call himself “the normal one” during his first press conference as Liverpool boss.

The German replaced Brendan Rodgers as manager last week, and subsequently gave his first media briefing prior to the international break.

Klopp gave himself the moniker when questioned about Jose Mourinho’s maiden press conference in England – he labelled himself “the special one” – but he has now revealed that it was unplanned.

"I was relieved after the press conference," he told Bild. "I have talked a lot of nonsense in my life – but not in English!

"I had not planned [the 'Normal One' quip]. I was asked and it came out. Sometimes it's better to hold your mouth!

"I have not read a newspaper since the press conference, but I've heard they're already making t-shirts [with my words]."

Klopp's first game in charge of Liverpool comes this weekend, with the Reds set to take on Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Krul 'devastated' after being ruled out for season

    tim-krul-cropped_175cq2pux4l641kjevvl4v3tf5.jpg

Tim Krul described himself as "devastated" after the Newcastle United goalkeeper was ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 27-year-old ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Netherlands' 2-1 win over Kazakhstan in Euro 2016 qualifying on Saturday.

Krul admitted the news confirmed his worst fears and is saddened not to be able to help Newcastle turn around what has been a dismal season to date.

"I'm devastated the scan has confirmed my biggest fear that I have torn my knee cruciate playing for Holland in the game vs Kazakhstan last night," he said in a message posted on his official Twitter account on Sunday.

"My recovery and hard work starts now to fully recover.

"I'm devastated I can't play a part on the pitch to help the team turn this season around. I still believe this club can and should be up there with the top teams."

Danny Blind has called Kenneth Vermeer and Maarten Stekelenburg into his squad for the decisive final qualifier with the Czech Republic on Tuesday, with both Krul and Jasper Cillessen unfit to play.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have recalled Freddie Woodman from a loan spell with League Two Crawley Town following Krul's injury.

Klopp needs time and money - Hitzlsperger

Former Germany international Thomas Hitzlsperger believes Jurgen Klopp can lead Liverpool to the title – just not this season.

Klopp has arrived at Anfield as Brendan Rodgers' successor to much fanfare and excitement after his impressive spell at Borussia Dortmund.

Hitzlsperger, a former Aston Villa, Stuttgart and Everton midfielder, feels the Swabian will be a success at Liverpool.

But the 33-year-old said it would take another off-season of spending for Klopp to lead the club - who sit 10th in the league - to where they want to be.

"Now you see, that the Premier League is very close together. I think they have the chance to qualify for the Champions League," Hitzlsperger said.

"They are no contender for the title this season, maybe next year.

"They are ready to invest a lot of money. If they trust their manager, which they do, they will give him a lot of money to spend and the title is possible."

Hitzlsperger said he was unsurprised by how Klopp had been received after his appointment was confirmed.

The 52-time international said he was asked about the former Borussia Dortmund coach during his time in England.

"It's crazy what is happening there since his arrival, because the Englishmen loved the way Dortmund played under him," Hitzlsperger said.

"When I still played in England, they often asked me about him and Dortmund.

"I recognised that his enthusiasm and his charisma are things people love. He is definitely a charismatic character."

Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata admits he is enjoying life in the Premier League and has no plans to return to La Liga.

The Spain international moved to England in 2011, when he joined Chelsea from Valencia, before signing for United in January 2014.

Now into his fifth season in English football, Mata was full of praise for the league's atmosphere and respect towards players.

"Right now I don't even think about it. I miss family, my friends, but for I'm very happy in Manchester," he told El Pais. "I have the feeling that I have just arrived here and I still have many things to do.

"Playing in England is a very positive experience. I advise every player to spend at least one year in the Premier League, because in terms of fans, the league, the structure, what football represents, it’s fantastic.

"There is a special respect towards the player. It is incredible. You are playing a top-level team and even when you lose the fans still support you, looking forward to the next match.

"That gives you more eager to share the successes with them. It is different from Spain. Here they understand football in a very special way."
