:)Meet the man behind the making of Martial

    1973302_heroa.jpg

Anthony Martial’s bright start and swift acclimatisation to life at Manchester United may have surprised many, but for those responsible for nurturing the most expensive teenager in world football, it was only a question of when, not if.

Martial returns to United this week having dazzled in his first start for France’s national side. Olivier Giroud may have stolen the headlines as his fortuitous early double ultimately won the game, but make no mistake, it was the young newcomer who was Denmark’s biggest tormentor with his constant bursts of pace, close control and direct approach.

The 19-year-old shares his foundations with one of the most experienced players currently in the France squad, Patrice Evra, as well as Thierry Henry, the predetermined benchmark for Martial’s career, by starting out at Les Ulis.

But unlike Arsenal’s all-time record goalscorer, Martial’s initial progression was the result of a surprise rejection.

"A scout in Paris told us to come to the academy at Clairefontaine for Anthony’s trial. He wasn't even 13, we liked him straight away, but he was too young,” Gerard Bonneau, who has been Lyon’s head of youth recruitment since 2003, explained to Goal.

"We thought he’d make it into the academy and we’d start monitoring him every week, but Clairefontaine didn't take him on. So, we made a deal with his parents - one more year at Les Ulis and then join us at Lyon."

Quickly, it became clear that the traits Martial has immediately shown since moving to Old Trafford, the ice-cool composure in front of goal, the ability to effortlessly adapt to new surroundings, were evident from an early age.

"He was player with a lot of strength and quality,” said Bonneau.

"To start off with, he did not like doing the defensive work but he quickly understood that it was needed in a successful football team.

"You had to be behind him, to push him to make the effort. He was a very quiet boy, very much like now. He rarely felt under pressure but he knew how to prepare properly for matches. He was taught at our training centre to become an athlete.

"Early on, we saw that he was not only skilful in front of goal but he linked up well with his team-mates. At the time, I said he will be in French national team by the time he’s 21, he’s done it at 19, so I was almost right!"

Bonneau was also responsible for the latter stages of Karim Benzema's development in Lyon's youth team and believes that there are similarities between the pair, who could be spearheading France's attack when they host Euro 2016 next summer.

"Anthony is a player like Benzema, he likes to participate in the attacking build-up," he said.

"He likes to play and he needs to have the ball, that's what he loves. He is not a player who likes to play out wide and cross for the other."

But how does a player who has, in just over the space of a month, moved to United for a fee which could climb to £58.8 million and made his senior international debut, have the natural ability to cope with such pressure?

"His attitude is very calm," Bonneau replied.

"People mistake it for nonchalance, but it helps him a lot. He doesn't really bother about what's around him. He just wants to play football. This is a key strength and it’s because of the way he’s been brought up. His parents were very cool. Always being there for him but they never came to my office asking about his situation.

"Nowadays, we wish all parents were like that, give their son the time to became a man. That's what they did with Anthony and that’s helped get him to where he is.

"In Lyon, we were sad when he left for Monaco, but the club needed that money [€5m]. But we knew he will become a great man."

Neymar: Ballon d'Or is reserved for Messi

    lionel-messi-neymar-cropped_1lr64tzj4o38z1pnqmia4tm7vr.jpg

The 2015 Ballon d'Or has already been "reserved" for Lionel Messi, according to Barcelona team-mate Neymar.

Messi is the current favourite to claim the game's top individual prize after inspiring Barcelona to the treble last season before reaching the final of the Copa America with Argentina.

Neymar is eager to be named among the final three nominees for the ceremony in January of next year but has little doubt who will claim the prize currently held by Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Leo is the favourite. This year, the Ballon d'Or is reserved for Messi, the best player in the world has already been named. For everything he's done, Leo deserves it," Neymar told Mundo Deportivo.

"I hope to grow playing alongside Messi. He's the best and an idol for me. And if I learn a lot then maybe one day I can win.

"Of course I want to be in the top three, that would be great for me."

With Messi currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury, Neymar insists he is ready to handle the pressure of becoming Barca's focal point in attack.

"Since I was young, I've always assumed responsibilities, for Santos, for the national team," he said.

"But here it's different, we know our responsibility, what we have to do on the pitch, and I'm going to do everything to help my team-mates.

"The challenge doesn't scare me even though I know it's difficult.

"Leo's fine. It's a delicate injury but he looks good and looks to be very happy with his recovery."

    Dortmund respond to Barcelona-Aubameyang links

    1909912_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund have insisted that they have no intention of selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona, amid links with the Catalan club.

Reports in Spain had suggested that Luis Enrique’s team had identified the Gabonese forward as a potential January transfer target, with their transfer ban on the verge of ending.

However, Michael Zorc, Dortmund’s sporting director, maintains that Aubameyang remains a key part of the club’s plans.

"We plan clearly with Auba,” he told Bild when pressed on the rumours.

Aubameyang himself says that he has never considered leaving Dortmund, having also been linked with Liverpool following the appointment of Jurgen Klopp.

"I am here with all my heart, I've never wanted to leave,” he added.

Aubameyang has scored 14 goals in 14 appearances in all competitions thus far in 2015-16.

Liverpool wanted Ancelotti, not Klopp - Redknapp

    ancelotti-chelsea_14khwjzwsa51p10ij6pvawzjgc.jpg

Jurgen Klopp was not Liverpool's first choice to succeed Brendan Rodgers, according to Harry Redknapp, who says Carlo Ancelotti was the man the club wanted.

The Anfield side dismissed Rodgers after their recent 1-1 draw with Everton and have since appointed Klopp as his replacement.

However, former Tottenham manager Redknapp says he has heard that the Reds had spoken to ex-Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti about the role first.

"I have heard from good sources that Ancelotti was offered the Liverpool job," he told talkSPORT.

"I don't think he wanted it. They spoke to him at some stage."

Klopp brough an end to a brief sabbatical to take over the Premier League side following his successful stint at Borussia Dortmund, which included two league titles and a Champions League final.

While Klopp insists he is no miracle worker, the coach says he believes he can win the Premier League with Liverpool in four years, and Redknapp feels he is the right man for the team.
"I do like the look of Klopp, he's a good appointment," he said.

"He looks bright, with great enthusiasm and he looks like he could be a really good addition to the Premier League.

"I'm looking forward to watching Liverpool play over the next few years."

Evra still 'annoyed' over Manchester United exit

    patrice-evra-cropped_hqpfctrlnuu61jemj9999kls9.jpg

Juventus defender Patrice Evra has admitted that he is still "annoyed" by the manner of his Manchester United exit.

The 34-year-old was keen to continue his career at Old Trafford but eventually opted to leave for Turin in the summer of 2014, after the Premier League outfit changed the terms of his contract.

Evra has no regrets over his decision to join the Serie A champions but remains bitterly upset by the circumstances surrounding his United departure.

"It's still hard to talk about my exit, but one day - when my career's over - I'll be able to speak more openly about it," the French full-back told RMC.

"I came to Turin above all for my family because at Manchester they had inserted a clause in our agreement which changed the situation considerably. It really annoyed me.

"But I don't regret this move, which in the end has proven to be more than positive.

"I'm happy in Serie A, even if it was more a coincidence that I ended up in Turin than a choice.

"My aim is to keep on winning with Juventus and the national team, particularly since we're the host nation [at Euro 2016]."

Ferguson: Man Utd have 'good chance' of winning Premier League

    sir-alex-ferguson-manchester-united-2013_1tz6e61053l81196urixhsdp17.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Manchester United have a "good chance" of winning the Premier League title this season.

Manchester City currently sit in first place after eight games, with Arsenal second, United third and Crystal Palace, Leicester City and West Ham making up the top six following Chelsea and Liverpool's poor starts to the campaign.

And Ferguson has backed his former club to capitalise on the inconsistency shown by other sides to put themselves in contention for a first league title since the Scot retired in 2013.

"It's that kind of league, anyone can win it now," he told ESPN FC.
"Leicester are the most consistent - they've only lost one game.

"If we [Man Utd] get to New Year up near the top, we'll have a good chance."

Ferguson also expects Wayne Rooney to regain his confidence and rediscover his best form in front of goal after scoring just once in the Premier League so far this season.

He added: "All the strikers I had, everyone relied on their confidence. When they were scoring they think they can never stop, when they're not scoring they think they're never going get a goal, it's a fact.

"When I was a striker I was the same; my dad used to say 'make sure you hit the ball, don't try and pass it in the net.'

"Eric Cantona had it, [Ruud] van Nistelrooy had it, [Andy] Cole had it and then the rich stream comes along again and they're back to normal. I think we'll have to wait, it'll happen. [Rooney will] go on a run, don't worry about that."

Corinthians put €25m pricetag on Alexandre Pato

    alexandre-pato-cropped_jrwpxrr1hfg311zjxi8ssbv8i.jpg

Corinthians have raised their asking price for Alexandre Pato to €25million following his impressive displays on loan at Sao Paulo.

The Brazilian giants repatriated the striker - who has scored 10 goals in 27 appearances for the national team - from AC Milan in 2013 for a fee of €15m.

However, Pato struggled to make a positive impact at Corinthians and was sent on loan to rivals Sao Paulo in 2014 until the end of the following year, subsequently delivering a string of positive performances.

Corinthians are currently in financial turmoil and had previously been looking for a fee in the region of €10m for the striker, but the club's the deputy director of football, Eduardo Ferreira, has now raised the price.

"At the moment there are only enquiries. But if a club comes in with an offer of €25m, we will let him go, otherwise he will return [in January]," he is quoted as saying by Globo Esporte.

The club are keen to cash in on Pato's recent upturn in form, with the higher valuation taking into account the fact that the player owns 40 per cent of his own economic rights.

In September, the striker revealed that Manchester United had tried to purchase him before the Premier League transfer deadline.

Wenger reveals the key instruction he tells to all of his Arsenal scouts

    1843482_heroa.jpg

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he instructs all of his Arsenal scouts to watch potential signings in away games so he can gauge a player’s bravery and desire.

The 65-year-old was speaking ahead of the Gunners’ trip to Watford on Saturday, where they could move to the top of the Premier League providing they win and Manchester City lose to Bournemouth at home.

“You could say it’s linked more to bravery - your character is more tested away from home, at home you feel the players are a bit more protected.” the Arsenal manager told Arsenal Player.

“But what I say to my scouts is, ‘Watch this player for me, but watch him in an away game.’ You want to know how he behaves away from home because usually at home you will be all right.

“If a scout comes to me and says he has found a good player, I ask where he saw him. If it was at home, I tell them to go and watch them away as well because it’s a better test of their character, their bravery and their desire.

“Once a player is good away from home, you can say you will consider him.”

'We'll out-run Liverpool too!' - Kane prepared for Klopp effect

    harry-kane-cropped_18yv1l3pldi2w14ialpi5iq3fr.jpg

Tottenham striker Harry Kane expects a tough encounter in Jurgen Klopp's first game in charge of Liverpool - but has warned that Spurs are ready to out-run Saturday's visitors.

Klopp is expected to quickly implement the gegenpressing style that was so effective at Borussia Dortmund with his new club, promising fans he will bring "full-throttle football" to Anfield following his appointment.

Kane, however, says Spurs have displayed their own impressive pressing game under Mauricio Pochettino this season and has backed them to match anything Klopp can inspire his side to produce.

"In the first couple of games after a managerial appointment everybody tries to impress so they will probably have that little five per cent extra than usual," Kane said after England's 3-0 win over Lithuania.

"We expect that. The Liverpool players at England could not wait to get back to start working under him.

"But we have out-run every team we have played so far this season and that's a sign we're playing the manager's tactics right and are fit enough to do it. And that's what we have to do again on Saturday. Obviously Liverpool, with a new manager, will be up for it. But we know what we have to do."

Tottenham are just two points outside the top four after eight matches and Kane believes they are benefiting from a lack of pressure in the race for Europe.

"Nobody is really talking about us and the top four, and that's probably a good thing," he added. "We haven't lost in the league since the first game of the season. We've had a few draws where we should have won as well, but we are playing well and doing the right things.

"We have a fit, young squad and we are training hard. We are happy to stay under the radar and keep putting in good performances because it's very open this year. That's down to the standard of the Premier League – anyone can beat anyone, and that's been shown a lot this season.

"Personally, I just need to keep working hard and do my best for Tottenham. That's all I can do. I'm doing the right things. I've just got to keep going at it, keep working hard and the goals will come."

    Injured Aguero returns to Manchester

    sergioaguero-cropped_hcwc4y3dajcb1u0ucxamr5ti2.jpg

Sergio Aguero has returned to Manchester City to begin his recovery from the hamstring injury he picked up while away on international duty with Argentina.

City star Aguero was carried off early in Argentina's 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat to Ecuador last Thursday, and told reporters 24 hours later that he expects to be sidelined for a month.

The 27-year-old is therefore out of his country's qualifier against Paraguay on Tuesday and could miss as many as seven City games - including the Manchester derby on October 25.

Boca Juniors' Carlos Tevez replaced his former City team-mate last week, and is likely to start in Asuncion alongside Angel Correa and Ezequiel Lavezzi up front.

Aguero tweeted on Tuesday: "Back in Manchester focused on recovery. Wishing the best for my team-mates in the national squad today. C'mon Argentina!"

'It is impossible to sub Ronaldo...he doesn't like it!'

Portugal coach Fernando Santos has warned Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez against substituting Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was awarded the fourth Golden Shoe award of his caeer on Tuesday, after he netted 48 goals in La Liga to help his team to second place behind Barcelona in 2014-15.

Santos accompanied Ronaldo to Tuesday's ceremony, and later suggested the forward never wants to be taken out of a game.

"It is impossible to substitute Cristiano," he told reporters. "He doesn't like it at all, he always wants be on the pitch."

Ronaldo celebrated his 30th birthday in February, Santos does not expect the Madrid star to slow down any time soon.

“The word that defines him is ambition," he said. "He won’t be satisfied with this [fourth Golden Shoe], he’ll want the fifth, the sixth and the seventh."

Mertesacker: Chambers destined to become one of the best

    permertesacker-cropped_17djs0vxmhdqi1lwpx0k0hrpgc.jpg

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker believes Calum Chambers is destined to become one of the best defenders in the game.

Chambers, 20, joined Arsenal from Southampton in July 2014 and has become a regular fixture in the first-team squad at the Emirates Stadium.

The centre-back has yet to become an undisputed starter under Arsene Wenger, but Mertesacker believes it is only a matter of time before Chambers takes the next step in his career.

"He's a good guy and we challenge each other every single day in training," the German defender told Arsenal Player.

"That’s what it's all about. He's eager to learn, he really fancies challenging every single centre-back and that’s something you need. When you step up as a young talent, you need to challenge the old lads.

"It's really good to have him so that we can improve. You never stop working, you never stop doing things because there’s someone behind you - in a respectful way - who is giving absolutely everything in every single training session.

"That's what my feeling is. When he does that, he's got a great chance to develop as one of the top centre-backs."

Welbeck: Rooney will be 'banging in goals' again soon

    rooney-cropped_1rrvldqcqznla1grr17z16szjs.jpg

Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck is certain his former Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney will soon start banging in the goals at Old Trafford.

United and England captain Rooney, who was not risked for the last two international matches due to an ankle problem but recently became his country's all-time record goalscorer, has only netted once in seven Premier League starts so far in 2015-16.

Rooney, 29, is expected to be fit for United's trip to play his former club Everton on Saturday and Welbeck - who is set to be missing until 2016 with a knee problem - has no doubt the goals will soon be flowing for his former strike partner.

"He has just broken the England record," Welbeck said to The National.

"People are entitled to their own opinions, but we know what kind of player he is. I am sure soon enough he will be banging in the goals again.

"He is right up there, obviously [with the best players I have played with]. Growing up at United and training with him day-in, day-out you learn a lot from him.

"Wazza is always there and you can talk to him. He has been through a lot of experiences in his life and he is always happy to pass that experience down to the younger players. It is a great achievement to pass Sir Bobby [Charlton].

"Everybody is over the moon for him and it is a great achievement."

Belgium 3-1 Israel: Hazard seals top spot for Wilmots' men

    2074162_heroa.jpg

Second-half goals from Dries Mertens, Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard sealed a comfortable 3-1 victory for Belgium over Israel in their final Euro 2016 qualifier.

The win means Marc Wilmots' side have finished top of Group B, two points clear of fellow automatic qualifiers Wales. Bosnia-Herzegovina finished in the play-off place following their 3-2 victory over Cyprus.

Radja Nainggolan tried his luck from long-range early on and was not too far away from Ofir Marciano's top corner. The hosts threatened again when De Bruyne made good ground down the left and sent in a low cross, but Romelu Lukaku could not quite convert from a tight angle at the second attempt.

It was Israel who came even closer to finding the first goal, though. After Tal Ben Haim II had been fouled by Nainggolan, captain Zahavi struck a brilliant free-kick which bounced away off the post.

Belgium responded quickly and would have gone ahead if not for Mertens' shocking miss. The lively De Bruyne found space on the right this time and another low cross took the keeper and the away defence out of the game, but the Napoli attacker was unable to roll into an empty net at the far post.

Vincent Kompany - controversially selected after Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini said prior to the international break he should not play while he recovered from a calf injury - almost marked his return with a goal, as his impressive shot from the edge of the box drifted just over.

Lukaku threatened early in the second half but was off target again after rounding Marciano having latched on to a Hazard throughball, before Kompany headed a De Bruyne corner straight at the keeper.

But on 64 minutes, the breakthrough did arrive. De Bruyne found Mertens in the penalty area and the 28-year-old worked half a yard of space from Tal Ben Haim and beat Marciano at his near post.

Belgium made it two with 12 minutes left on the clock. After Nainggolan had been fouled 25 yards from goal, De Bruyne's bouncing free-kick found the bottom corner, although Marciano should have done better having got two hands to it.

Hazard then forced Marciano into a low save before De Bruyne had a left-footed drive pushed past the post as the home side dominated the closing stages.

The third goal was coming and it arrived after a slick passing move. Mertens found Hazard in oceans of space inside the box and the Chelsea star slotted a simple finish past Marciano for his sixth goal in his last eight internationals.

Israel did get a late consolation in the 88th minute, with Zahavi's inswinging cross powerfully headed home by Hemed, but the visitors were well beaten as Belgium eased their way to next year's finals in France.

Netherlands 2-3 Czech Republic: Van Persie own goal compounds Dutch misery against 10 man visitors

    2074072_heroa.jpg

Netherlands failed to book a place in the play-off stage of Euro 2016 qualifying following a 3-2 defeat at home to 10-man Czech Republic.

Danny Blind's side needed to win their final Group A fixture and hope Iceland beat Turkey in order to finish in third place, but were unable to do their part and Fatih Terim's men won in Konya anyway.

After a positive start from the hosts, Pavel Kaderabek and Josef Sural fired Czech Republic into a two-goal lead inside 35 minutes, drawing jeers from the Amsterdam Arena crowd.

Home spirits were lifted when Marek Suchy was dismissed for his challenge on Memphis Depay on the stroke of half-time.

However, Robin van Persie - making his 101st Netherlands appearance as a first-half substitute - put the ball in his own net in the 66th minute.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar pulled one back four minutes later and Van Persie scored his 50th international goal in the 83rd minute, but a win would not have been enough anyway given Turkey's victory as, fittingly, Blind's team ended a dismal qualification campaign in defeat.

Netherlands wasted no time in setting about their task, with Anwar El Ghazi calling Petr Cech into action inside the opening minute before Wesley Sneijder blazed over nine minutes later.

But Netherlands' desire to push for an opener left them exposed defensively, and Czech Republic soon began to capitalise on that.

Jeroen Zoet needed to be bailed out by Virgil van Dijk after spilling a Sural cross at the feet of Theodor Gebre Selassie, and in the 24th minute the visitors broke the deadlock.

A slick move through the centre of the pitch was completed by Kaderabek, who guided the ball beyond Zoet at his near post following a pass from Jiri Skalak.

Whistles rang out inside the Amsterdam Arena as the Dutch adopted a more conservative approach, but 11 minutes later the deficit increased.

Tomas Necid found Sural in the box and he lifted the ball over a weak challenge from Van Dijk before sliding a finish into the back of the net.

With his team in dire straits, Blind replaced left-back Jairo Riedewald with Van Persie.

And Dutch hopes of turning the game around were given a boost two minutes before the interval as last man Suchy was shown a red card for bringing down Depay.

Van Persie and Depay both passed up opportunities to test Cech early in the second half so Blind made another attacking change - striker Bas Dost on for centre-back Van Dijk.

Netherlands' lack of ingenuity proved costly in the 66th minute as the Van Persie headed a Skalak free-kick into his own goal to compound the hosts' misery.

Huntelaar restored a modicum of respect four minutes later as he climbed above Vaclav Prochazka to nod Sneijder's corner past Cech.

Van Persie then reduced the deficit to a single goal, stabbing a flick-on from Dost beyond Cech with seven minutes remaining.

The damage had already been done, however, with Netherlands finishing fourth in the group while Czech Republic leaped above Iceland to take first place.

Norway dramatically missed out on automatic qualification for Euro 2016 as Italy produced a second-half comeback to claim a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.

Per-Mathias Hogmo's men went into their last Group H clash in the second and final automatic spot and leading Croatia by two points.

And Norway appeared on course for the finals when Alexander Tettey opened the scoring in the 23rd minute.

The Norwich City midfielder powered a low strike beyond Italy goalkeeper and captain Gianluigi Buffon to put the home side's streak of 49 consecutive qualifiers unbeaten under threat.

But Antonio Conte's side dominated after that goal and equalised through Alessandro Florenzi's close-range 73rd-minute effort.

The comeback was completed in the 82nd minute courtesy of a rasping Graziano Pelle strike into the top-right corner that ensured qualification for Croatia - who beat Malta 1-0 - while Norway finish third and are left to settle for a play-off spot.

Italy went close to going ahead inside 60 seconds as Pelle glanced a header narrowly wide from Mattia De Sciglio's left-wing cross.

The hosts continued to have the better of the first half, but fell behind courtesy of a fine strike from Tettey, who found the bottom-right corner with a fierce drive from the edge of the area after Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini failed to clear a left-wing free-kick.

Pelle should have levelled matters in the 35th minute when the Southampton striker somehow headed off target from point-blank range after Even Hovland misjudged a Riccardo Montolivo pass.

Roberto Soriano then forced Orjan Nyland to turn round the post a minute later as Italy piled on the pressure, with the Norway goalkeeper then tipping a Pelle header over and keeping out a swerving Florenzi effort from distance with a fine diving save.

Norway established more of a foothold in the game after the break, but were grateful to Nyland once more as he denied Eder with a one-on-one save in the 61st minute.

Both players were hurt in the collision and Eder was substituted and replaced by Sebastian Giovinco as a result.

Italy's pressure finally told as Florenzi pounced on some slack Norway defending to poke home at the far post from six yards out.

Florenzi looked to have added a second when he slotted in after being teed up by Antonio Candreva, only for the Roma winger to be denied by the offside flag.

However, that decision proved immaterial as Pelle settled the clash with a first-time volley past Nyland to extend Italy's unbeaten qualifying run to 50 games and secure top spot in the group.

Wales 2-0 Andorra: Ramsey & Bale strike to give Dragons victory

Second-half goals from Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale ensured Wales ended their triumphant Euro 2016 qualifying run with a 2-0 Group B victory over Andorra.

Wales' progress to a first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup was confirmed on Saturday, despite a 2-0 loss to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

A capacity crowd gathered in Cardiff, hoping for a return more befitting of their heroes' achievement, but Chris Coleman's team were frustrated by Andorra during a goalless first half.

Bale schemed relentlessly in his attempts to unpick the minnows' dogged defence, while goalkeeper Ferran Pol impressed.

Ramsey pounced to get the party started in the 50th minute and Bale fittingly snared his seventh goal of a talismanic qualifying campaign four minutes from time.

Belgium ensured they finished top of the group with a 3-1 victory over Israel - a statistic that mattered little in the Welsh capital as the celebratory strains of 'Bread of Heaven' boomed around the stands before full-time.

The feel-good atmosphere inside the Cardiff City Stadium was punctured in the fifth minute when a sickening clash of heads between James Chester and Victor Moreira left the Andorra midfielder prone on the turf.

Moreira left the field on a stretcher following a lengthy period of treatment, after which the visitors had to repel a predictable threat.

Bale collected Sam Vokes' lay-off to thrash a shot across goal from the left-hand corner of the box – Pol responding with a fine save.

The Real Madrid star was then cynically scythed down by Ildefonso Lima, the defender booked for his troubles, before sending an 18th-minute free-kick narrowly wide.

David Edwards replaced ankle-injury victim Hal Robson-Kanu as the half reached its midway point and the Wolves midfielder had a close-range header cleared off the line by Lima shortly after his introduction.

Pol was at full stretch to tip over and spare Max Llovera the embarrassment of heading into his own net and the keeper tipped a flicked Ramsey header onto the crossbar as Andorra approached the break under relentless pressure.

Tom Lawrence came on for his Wales debut at the interval in place of Edwards, but Bale was the architect when the opening goal arrived.

Having been struck by a botched Andorran clearance, Bale flighted a cross from the right for Ashley Williams to draw another stop from Pol before Ramsey slammed home the rebound from close range.

The Arsenal midfielder almost added a more accomplished second as the hour approached, slaloming through a clutch of Andorra challenges before dragging his eventual shot wide.

Pol's yellow card for timewasting at 1-0 down demonstrated the limited scope of his team's ambition, while the direct dribbling of Ramsey and Bale caused increasing trouble for weary opponents.

Having tirelessly led the line, Vokes sent his latest headed attempt off target in the 72nd minute and the Burnley striker fluffed his lines when Pol spilt a Williams effort.

Vokes' personal frustrations continued, but Bale extinguished his by swivelling to slam a low shot beyond Pol and lap up a hero's acclaim.
