Arsenal will attack Bayern Munich, warns Gabriel

    gabriel-paulista-cropped_wd8skwntpovx15x9ftc6d6o3r.jpg

"We are a big team, we are Arsenal and we need to attack because we need the result, but we need to attack with intelligence and make sure we don't suffer a defeat and complicate our situation for the rest of our competition."

"Everything is possible in football," he added.
"We know the difficulties we are going to find. Bayern are an excellent team playing at home with the fans on their side, so it will be a big challenge.

"If we are as determined as we have been over the last few years, I believe that we can go there and get a great result."

No team better for Guardiola than Bayern Munich - Matthaus

    pepguardiola-cropped_175zitvx1fy661olah1jgyjaog.jpg

Lothar Matthaus says he is perplexed by Pep Guardiola's reluctance to sign a new contract at Bayern Munich, suggesting no team could be better for him.

The Bavarian side's perfect start to the Bundesliga campaign came to an end on Friday after a goalless draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, though they remain five points ahead of Borussia Dortmund.

However, Guardiola is yet to sign a new deal with the Allianz Arena side, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season, and Matthaus cannot work out what he is waiting for.

"What could be better for him than Bayern Munich?" the World Cup winner told Yahoo. "Every wish was fulfilled and yet Guardiola wants even more?

"Bayern have never been so dominant than they are now, they have long since reached a new level of quality."

The ex-Barcelona boss has been linked to a move to the Premier League, with Manchester City the team reportedly most interested in hiring him, but Matthaus feels he would be better off staying in Germany.

"Of course, the English have a lot of money, but they lag behind in sports.

"The Bayern bosses are prepared for his departure."

'Mourinho WILL turn it around at Chelsea'

    2171962_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho has everything it takes to turn around his situation at Chelsea, according to Jose Angel Crespo.

A dismal start to the season has left the Blues sitting 15th in the Premier League with 11 points from as many games, with Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge the latest disheartening defeat.

The Portuguese coach has refused to discuss his future with the press, but the club and owner Roman Abramovich are desperate to see him get the team back to their best.

And Angel believes the fans and those in charge should stick by him, insisting he can fix the issue.

“Chelsea fans love Mourinho," the Aston Villa player told Goal. "When I played against them, they sang his name during the match.

"It's normal for journalists to criticise him after bad results, but the fans and the club have confidence in him.

"He won the Premier League last season and has good players, so he will end this negative streak."

The 28-year-old's former team Sevilla take on Manchester City on Tuesday in the Champions League and he believes the Spanish side can cause the visitors serious problems.

“City considered one of the candidates for the title because they have really good players, but it is true that in some matches they win with some individual actions and have some problems," he added.

"They are going through a complicated time because Aguero and Silva are injured, but they’re strong and have quality and the physical ability to win all of their matches.

“Sevilla must control the ball because City have fast players who are really dangerous at counterattacks.

"Sevilla must use wingers to attack quickly and create problems for the defence. As the home team, with the support of their fans, they can create many problems for City.

“For Aston Villa and me would be perfect if Manchester City lose and received a mood beat. It will be a hard match for them but they are ready to play Champions League and Premier League every week."

Crespo's own side are struggling at the bottom of the Premier League and recently sacked Tim Sherwood, but the Spaniard feels they can climb back up the table.

“Results are really bad for us. We start well in many matches but we eventually lose. With Sherwood, only the results were bad and so it is normal that they try to change our situation with a new coach," he said.

"We need a positive result to recover confidence and climb at the standings."

I'd take a point against Bayern Munich - Wenger

    arsenewenger-cropped_1pyzi7vu25rmg1izcb531anqc1.jpg

Arsene Wenger would gladly accept a point from Arsenal's trip to Bayern Munich on Wednesday but admits they cannot afford to simply sit back and defend.

The Gunners kept their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stages alive with a 2-0 victory over Pep Guardiola's side on matchday three and have managed a draw and a victory in their last two visits to the Allianz Arena.

Bayern were held to a goalless draw against Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday but Wenger insists they remain a dangerous attacking team and believes playing too defensively against the Bundesliga leaders could prove fatal.

"I would sign today to take a point but to sit off Bayern," the Arsenal manager said. "But with their offensive quality, that would be difficult to maintain for 90 minutes.

"We have to relieve the pressure whenever we can and try to score goals. That is the structure of our team, to attack.

"If we set out our players only to defend then I don't think we'll be so efficient. We have to play every time we can."

Arsenal stretched their recent run of form to five wins in six matches with a 3-0 victory away to Swansea City on Saturday and Wenger is confident his side is continuing to grow in strength.

"It was impressive because if you look at our away results since the start of the season, we have won at Crystal Palace and Watford, at Newcastle and at Swansea," he added. "So it looks like the team has stabilised and is growing as a unit. So let's grow even more.

"We are certainly more stable defensively but that is from the start of January. If you look at the points we have taken from January 1, we have taken more points than anyone else."

I was never going to join Real Madrid - Verratti

    1792002_heroa.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti always wanted to remain at the Parc des Princes despite interest from Real Madrid.

The sides meet at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday with Verratti having been the subject of heavy speculation linking him with a move to the Spanish capital during the close season.

Verratti - under contract at PSG until 2019 - was reportedly of interest to Madrid, although the club stated in June that the rumours were "completely untrue".

The 22-year-old told Canal Football Club: "It is an issue that is irrelevant now.

"It's nice when big teams are interested in you but my priority was always to stay at PSG.

"I am grateful to the club and I'm happy here. I don't see why I would leave."

Having impressed in Ligue 1 since moving from Pescara in 2012, Verratti's future has been the subject of much discussion, with Madrid's league rivals Barcelona also said to be interested.

And, when asked who his midfield idol is, Verratti settled on Barca man Andres Iniesta.

"There are many who are very good, but if I have to choose one I would say Iniesta," he added.

"He dazzles me the way he plays, he can do everything. He scores goals and nullifies opponents. He is magical. I love to see him in action."

Chelsea are behind Mourinho, he can fix this - Mikel

    kurt-zouma-gary-cahill-cesar-azpilicueta-john-terry-diego-costa-john-obi-mikel-of-chelsea_i3r45z2mavrh1auvfujxmumfi.jpg

John Obi Mikel insists the Chelsea players are behind embattled manager Jose Mourinho, stating the Portuguese can improve the Premier League champions' fortunes.

Mikel was part of the Blues side that lost 3-1 at home to Liverpool on Saturday as their dismal title defence continued, further increasing the pressure on the coach after six defeats in 11 league outings.

Four points from three Champions League games and a League Cup exit at the hands of Stoke City have added to Mourinho's difficult campaign, with reports suggesting an element of unhappiness in the Chelsea dressing room.

But Mikel told reporters: "We are right behind the manager. There's no doubt about it.

"In training we work very hard. If anyone can turn this around, we definitely think Mourinho is the one.

"Last year we were champions. We won two trophies. Jose knows this club more than any other manager. He's the most successful manager in the club's history.

"I definitely think that, if anything is wrong, if anything can be fixed, he is the one."

As speculation regarding Mourinho's future continues to swirl, former Chelsea bosses Guus Hiddink and Carlo Ancelotti are said to be targets over a short-term return to the club.

However, Mikel maintains any desire to see an end to Mourinho's second reign at Chelsea comes from outside the dressing room.

"There's no one out there that is going to come in and fix what’s going on," he added.

"If you tell the team that we are not giving 100 per cent then there is the doubt, but we are giving 100 per cent, we are playing for the manager, we are right behind him.

"He has come out a few times and said the players are not giving 100 per cent and then you look at the next few games, the players come out and play better.

"He is doing everything that needs to be done. It’s just that right now things aren’t going well, so everyone outside wants him to go. I don’t think it’s the right way to go.

"I think that inside that dressing room we definitely believe he is the man to change things. He knows this club in and out. He knows what’s wrong and it’s just a matter of time before results start coming."

James could face PSG - Benitez

    james-rodriguez-cropped_1to3agxrzqj951g0093f9ri8nc.jpg

Real Madrid star James Rodriguez could be fit to face Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday's Champions League tie, Rafael Benitez has said.

Madrid and PSG are joint top with seven points heading into the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Benitez welcomes the return of the Colombian, who has not featured for the club since August, as they fight for first place in Group A.

"James is on the list, he’s better," Benitez told reporters. "That does not mean he will start, though, because he lacks match fitness.

"Also, Mateo Kovacic is well. He is available, he is training normally.

"When they are all available, I will have to say who plays and who doesn’t. But football goes from day to day."

Karim Benzema is also nearing his return to the team, but, having been left out of the list for the midweek clash, is not quite ready for such a high profile game.

"Benzema is on schedule for his return against PSG," the coach said. "He still needs confidence to play.

While the ex-Liverpool boss feels the quality of PSG cannot be understated, he is happy with the way his side are improving and hopes Cristiano Ronaldo can be relied upon to make the difference.

"This PSG is among the best teams in Europe, without doubt. We are doing well but I am convinced that it will improve. I want to see the best team when we are competing for titles.

"Ronaldo is a fundamental player for us. I hope that he is tomorrow and for many years to come."

Messi dependence is good for Barcelona - Andersson

    lionel-messi-cropped_v4d4hrhz2mq915tdh439hjak6.jpg

Barcelona's reliance on Lionel Messi should not be considered a bad thing, according to former centre-back Patrik Andersson.

The Liga champions have often been accused of so-called 'Messidependencia' in the past by detractors and they have looked short of their best during the Argentina international's recent absence due to a knee injury.

A defeat to Sevilla and stuttering performances against Bayer Leverkusen and BATE in particular have led to more scrutiny of the European champions' form without their star forward, but Andersson believes they should simply be glad to have him as part of their set-up.

"Barca are not the same without Messi, but I don't think Messidepenencia is a bad thing, because it means you have Messi in your team," the former Sweden international, who spent three years as a player with Barca, told Mundo Deportivo.

"It would be worse if he wasn't there. It's a bit like [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic with Sweden. They're decisive."

Luis Suarez has emerged as a crucial part of the Barca side in Messi's absence, having scored the winner against Leverkusen and all three goals in the 3-1 win over Eibar.

Andersson has enjoyed watching Suarez adapt to life at Camp Nou but has nonetheless warned that Barca may find it difficult to defend their treble this season.

"I love how Suarez has adapted to this Barca," the Swede added. "I like Luis Enrique's team: it's direct. They can repeat the treble, but it's difficult: when you win everything, what else is there?

"It happened to Bayern Munich [in 2013-14]. The mental factor is important. Winning takes a lot out of you."

Nasri and Silva miss Manchester City training

    david-silva-cropped_2r4tlj1j0dm61bkv57mrqrsmd.jpg

David Silva and Samir Nasri are expected to miss Manchester City's Champions League clash with Sevilla on Wednesday after sitting out training on Monday.

Silva has not featured for City since suffering an ankle injury on Spain duty, while a hamstring problem has kept Nasri out of action since the 5-1 win over AFC Bournemouth.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini hoped to have both attacking midfielders available for the encounter at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan but it looks unlikely that either will now travel to Spain.

"There was no David Silva or Samir Nasri, meaning the creative duo are unlikely to travel later today," City stated on their official website on Monday.

There was better news concerning Fabian Delph and Gael Clichy, however, with both having trained with the squad after working to recover from respective hamstring and ankle problems.

City are second in Group D, one point behind leaders Juventus.

    Barcelona revive Gundogan interest

    2181022_heroa.jpg

Barcelona have revived their interest in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, Goal understands.

Barca sporting director, Ariedo Braida, was at the Weserstadion to watch Gundogan as Dortmund beat Werder Bremen 3-1 on Saturday.

The 25-year-old had attracted interest from the Catalan club prior to a back injury picked up while on international duty in 2013 which ruled him out of action for over a year.

Barca subsequently turned their attention instead to the likes of Koke, Marco Verratti and Paul Pogba, but with all three players valued at fees in excess of €60 million, Gundogan is once again considered an option.

Gundogan, who was wanted by Manchester United and initially looked set to leave Dortmund last summer, eventually signed a contract extension to remain at Signal Iduna Park.

But with the Germany international's deal set to expire in 2017, he could become a cheaper alternative for Luis Enrique's side.

Gundogan has scored twice and provided five assists during Dortmund's impressive start to the new Bundesliga season, having helped his side recover from a disastrous first half of the last campaign to qualify for the Europa League.

Blind on Memphis: He doesn't contribute to the team!

    1929582_heroa.jpg

Netherlands coach Danny Blind has left Memphis Depay out of his latest national team squad, insisting the Manchester United winger doesn't do enough for the team.

Memphis, along with former United striker Robin van Persie, has been omitted from Blind's 26-man squad for the friendly fixtures against Wales and Germany in November, with the Dutch having failed to qualify for the Euro 2016 finals.

And although Memphis was expected to miss out on the forthcoming international friendlies due to injury, Blind has suggested that his lack of work for the team means he does not warrant a place in the squad.

"I think Depay fits in the profile of Dutch football in terms of quality," Blind told reporters. "However, top level football demands a player to contribute to the team. That is something Memphis isn't always doing.

"I gave Memphis a call, and told him he wouldn't be on the list. I said: 'if you are a big name, expect criticism when things aren't going for you'."

Memphis was left out of the United squad entirely for the draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday and hasn't started for the Red Devils in the league since being withdrawn at half-time in the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal at the beginning of October.

Schneiderlin misses United training ahead of CSKA clash

    morganschneiderlin-cropped_8l2pzx9vt1hr15xq2ew8hc0pf.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin missed training on Monday ahead of the Champions League clash with CSKA Moscow as Memphis Depay took part in running drills at Carrington.

The Premier League side take on the Russian outfit in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with manager Louis van Gaal set to offer fitness updates on the likes of Schneiderlin and Depay at his news conference on Monday.

However, the former Southampton man was not involved at Carrington, despite playing all of Saturday's 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, although Depay exercised with team-mate Phil Jones.

The Netherlands international was ruled out of the weekend's stalemate with Palace due to a knock and has not been called up by Netherlands coach Danny Blind for friendlies against Wales and Germany.

Van Gaal's men have struggled for goals of late but sit second in Group B - two points behind Wolfsburg and level with CSKA in third.

'Man City must win Champions League to prove we are a big club'

    vincent-kompany-cropped_wdbde6vvzs5b13zxkn6i86vh1.jpg

Vincent Kompany does not believe Manchester City will be able to count themselves among Europe's elite until they win the Champions League.

The Premier League leaders are chasing a third English title in five seasons, with Kompany captaining them to top spot domestically in 2011-12 and 2013-14.

They were unable to replicate that success on the continent under Roberto Mancini and the Italian's successor Manuel Pellegrini has fared little better to date – consecutive losses to Barcelona in the round of 16 in the past two seasons standing as City's best efforts to date in the competition.

Successive late wins over Borussia Monchengladbach and Sevilla in their previous two matches means Kompany and his team-mates can secure progression from Group D with two games to spare on Tuesday, providing they beat Sevilla away from home on Tuesday and Juventus do likewise against their Bundesliga opponents.

"It is the last thing that we have to achieve in order to prove we have become a big club," Kompany told reporters regarding his ambition of winning the Champions League.

A regular criticism levelled at City during their continental failures is that they do not significantly temper their attacking approach and are too easily picked off by high-quality opposition.

Kompany believes the goalless derby draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on October 25, when Pellegrini's men showed little of their customary verve but restricted their rivals in terms of clear chances, could point the way towards European success.

"It's important to have that side to your game, in games like this," the Belgium captain said.

"What we got out of the game at Old Trafford is the fact that we were solid, and we looked solid again, against Norwich," he added, referring to a 2-1 league win on Saturday.

"We have been doing that in the Premier League so far this year. We will always score goals, always be dangerous, but if everyone agrees to defend and to put in the hard work as well, we have a team that can achieve so much success."

Di Maria will get warm welcome on Madrid return - Marcelo

    angeldimariamarcelo-cropped_1fwmwct4041ze1o0lplf0kavs4.jpg

Marcelo believes former Real Madrid team-mate Angel Di Maria will be given a good reception when he returns to the Santiago Bernabeu with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Di Maria spent four years alongside Marcelo in the Spanish capital, helping Madrid to capture their 10th European Cup, while also winning La Liga and the Copa del Rey twice during his time at the club.

The pair will come face to face this week when Di Maria returns for the first time since leaving for Manchester United in 2014, before joining the French champions last summer.

"I think Di Maria will get a good reception," Marcelo said on Monday.

"It was great to play with him. Di Maria is a great player and a great friend. I wish him the best. But we should not just concentrate on one PSG player – we must think about their whole team.

"I expect a very tough game. PSG are a team with high-quality players, I expect a tough match."

Madrid and PSG are level on seven points at the top of Group A and drew 0-0 in the reverse fixture last month.

A victory for either side could go a long way to deciding who progresses as group winners, with Marcelo aware of the importance the fixture holds.

"It's going to be a key match. All of the players want to play, it's like a final. We will play it with plenty of enthusiasm," he added.
