:frown::oo:Van Gaal: I still have confidence in Rooney

    2161372_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has defended Wayne Rooney in the wake of criticism over the club captain's current form.

Rooney has scored just one goal in his last seven appearances in all competitions, leading to questions regarding his best position.

But Van Gaal says he is still confident in the 30-year-old.

"You can also discuss why other clubs are not scoring but it is always Wayne Rooney," Van Gaal told reporters. "Because Wayne is a fantastic player the expectation is much higher than another player in another club, I can imagine that. But you have to give players time to come back in a certain shape and that is what we are doing.

"I have confidence in this player but he is also more than only scoring goals. He is our captain, but also an example for the whole team. That is why he has more credits than any other player and I have explained that already to the group a year and a half ago."I have still confidence in Wayne Rooney."

When asked if he has considered resting his captain, as suggested by former England striker Alan Shearer on Monday, Van Gaal admitted it is a possibility but only if it is right for the player himself.

"Yes, but not only for Wayne, I have done that with all my players. For example, Paddy McNair was a week in Ireland last week. When we think it is better, then we do that it is not an issue for me.

"Even when I was a young coach I did that for Jari Litmanen. He had also problems in the months of November and December because the Finnish competition was like that. I know that so I sent him on holidays."It is not a big issue for me, but it is more a big issue for the players. They are not so easy to convince."

United go into their Champions League group B clash with CSKA Moscow on Tuesday in a poor run of form, having failed to score in 325 minutes in all competitions and critics circling due to the team's style of play.

However, Van Gaal was his usual forthright self when asked whether he believes his side's current approach is in keeping with the club's traditions.

"I have seen periods and tendencies in Manchester United like in other clubs. It was not always a big theatre of dreams. I’m sorry to say that, but it’s logical also. Now we are making – hopefully – history but it takes time, but I have said that before and I cannot repeat myself or it will be 'Van Gaal asks for time again!' No.

"I can remind you that you were saying defending is our problem, and I said 'No, defensive organisation starts in attack.' Now we are the best defenders in the Premier League and you say we cannot attack. No, it is not true. It is only a moment in the process. We have stood first in the Premier League, now we have a bad period because football is scoring goals. Football is not a process, football is not creating chances. Football is scoring goals.

"We have to improve that and we dealing with that, but I hope we will score against CSKA Moscow. But I know it will be very difficult because they are very organised and they will play more defensively. But still we will try to score goals."

Antonelli proud of 'near perfect' AC Milan

    ac-milan-cropped_1ek09npxgfp9612ehrv4alzxhv.jpg

Luca Antonelli has described AC Milan's performance in the 3-1 victory over Lazio on Sunday as being close to perfection.

Andrea Bertolacci, Philippe Mexes and Carlos Bacca all got on the scoresheet as Sinisa Mihajlovic's men ended the home side's perfect record in Rome this season, despite Ricardo Kishna's late consolation.

With Milan having now won three games in a row, Antonelli believes their season is beginning to show signs of promise after an inconsistent start which put head coach Mihajlovic under severe pressure.

"We knew all about the strength of their wide men, who are perhaps the best in Serie A," Antonelli said after the match. "We did well to limit them. It was a big win at a tough ground and tonight we ended their 100 per cent home record.

"Our season is changing and today was a near perfect match. We have Atalanta up next and then we will have the international break to keep on improving."

Mattia De Sciglio believes the confidence within the Milan squad is beginning to build as they target consistent results instead of more aesthetically pleasing football.

"I am very happy because we wanted to win more than anything," said the Italy defender.

"We battled with heart like in the previous two matches. Ahead of the match, we said it wasn't about playing beautiful football, but rather getting the job done and that's what we did.

"Winning breeds confidence and brings a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere in the group. We're growing closer as a squad. Now, we have to give continuity to these results in order to go into the international break in a relaxed manner. We showed how much we wanted it."

Milan jumped above Lazio into sixth in Serie A after Sunday's victory and are now just five points behind leaders Fiorentina.

Klopp faces key month as his Liverpool overhaul begins to take shape

    2168132_heroa.jpg

Jürgen Klopp hoped he didn’t understand the question, given its absurdity, but he did. 'Could Liverpool challenge for the title?’ His response was emphatic: “Are you crazy? You think after one win at Chelsea we should think about this? I’ve only been here three weeks.

“We have to improve everything and then we can talk about where we will be in the table but, at this moment, in November, we cannot talk.”

The final month before the festive season is a major one for Liverpool. It is Klopp’s first full one in charge of the club, and he’ll want to carry over the momentum from the 3-1 victory at Chelsea. That dismantling of Jose Mourinho’s distressed side was the only time Liverpool recovered to win a game having conceded first in 10 months. It was their best showing of the season, but Klopp insisted afterwards “we can do much better than today, much much, much better.” He expects his players to prove as much in the upcoming encounters.

October was mixed for the Merseysiders, with two wins and two different managers in the dugout. Brendan Rodgers oversaw 1-1 draws with FC Sion and Everton, before being axed after the derby. Klopp signed an initial three-year deal to succeed him just four days later, and has been unbeaten in his first five matches.

The German has performed admirably considering he walked into an injury crisis at the club, which only worsened during his first week. Captain Jordan Henderson, Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino were unavailable for the start of his tenure, before Danny Ings and Joe Gomez picked up ACL problems in consecutive days. Then, ahead of his opening encounter at Tottenham, Daniel Sturridge suffered a knee injury. He is still sidelined along with the skipper.

While the start of October was sombre, Klopp ensured it had a commanding end with a Capital One Cup victory over Bournemouth and the upstaging of Chelsea. The new boss will want that streak to continue.

First on the agenda will be an improvement in the club’s Europa League campaign. The Reds have not won a game in the competition yet, with their three fixtures all ending 1-1. They are second in Group B - four points adrift of leaders FC Sion, and only one ahead of Rubin Kazan and Bordeaux. Liverpool travel to Russia on Thursday before hosting the French side three weeks later.

Liverpool also navigate the last of their challenging first seven Premier League aways, with a visit to league-leading Manchester City after the international break. The previous six tricky trips - Stoke, Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton, Tottenham and Chelsea - resulted in two victories (at the Britannia and Stamford Bridge) with Liverpool only exiting Old Trafford having suffered defeat. Klopp will want to avoid that in Manchester this time out.

In just three weeks, the former Borussia Dortmund boss has managed to tattoo his trademarks on the team. Counter-pressing, defensive organisation, attacking balance and greater industry have all been evident as he continues his ‘full-throttle’ makeover. Liverpool do not only look better collectively, individuals are also profiting from Klopp's approach.
Jordon Ibe has regained his confidence, while Adam Lallana has admitted the last few games are the best he’s felt from a fitness and performance perspective since joining the club. Lucas, meanwhile, has sharpened his attacking contributions. Under Klopp, the defensive midfielder has directly sparked forays forward, with Saturday’s encounter the perfect example: he created two chances and attempted two shots.

Christian Benteke found his work in winning headers largely wasted previously, but against Chelsea, two of the three goals were born out of the striker’s successful aerial duels. In the absence of sufficient movement and creativity ahead of him, Philippe Coutinho had been off-colour in this campaign, but shrugged that off to score twice at Stamford Bridge. Fellow Brazilian Roberto Firmino has shown glimpses of the quality which, as Klopp pointed out, made him the best player in the Bundesliga for months last season.

The 48-year-old's ideas have been translating well, and his intensity has filtered through the squad. He has made small changes that have already had a sizeable impact. Visitors are no longer allowed to freely frequent Melwood, as distractions are not welcome at the club’s “headquarters of football.”

Training times have been altered to be more in line with matchday kick-offs. The “end of the world” mentality after conceding a goal is being transformed to the steel needed to implement the manager's “fighting football.”

As he tackles his first full month in charge, expect more adjustments from Klopp and more notable improvements from Liverpool.

Van Gaal backs Memphis after Netherlands snub

    depay-cropped_17ojyhuvgvvym1r2yjbfh1r3dy.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal maintains Memphis Depay is the "greatest talent of his age" despite the forward being left out of the Netherlands squad to face Wales.

Memphis has struggled to acclimatise to life at Old Trafford since a high-profile summer move from PSV and last started a Premier League match when United lost 3-0 at Arsenal on October 4. The 21-year-old came off early with a knock when restored to the first XI as Van Gaal's men crashed out of the League Cup on penalties against Middlesbrough in midweek.

The 21-year-old's stock has also fallen in his homeland, where he became something of a scapegoat as Netherlands failed to qualify for Euro 2016, and Danny Blind has opted against selecting the youngster for the trip to Cardiff on November 13.

But Van Gaal, who managed the player as he guided Netherlands to third place in the World Cup in 2014, believes fans of club and country need to show patience.

"I have said he is the greatest talent of his age but he is only 21 and you cannot expect consistency," Van Gaal told reporters ahead of the Champions League meeting with CSKA Moscow.

"He is at a stage of his career where he must adapt to many things. I'm convinced he's coming back, maybe stronger than before but we have to give him time - like we will with [Anthony] Martial when he is a little bit lower in his shape."

Van Gaal has also called for Memphis to establish himself as an out-and-out striker as opposed to a player who operates across the forward positions.

"I'm always thinking in the team's benefit and not in the benefit of one player," he added.

"I have said I have to make all the decisions around the game plan and the opponent, so it's not that I have said left wing is his best position, but he can play in three positions in his eyes - left, striker and number 10.

"I think his best position may be the striker's position. He is very young but I think it is better he develops in the striker's position."

    Mourinho given one-match stadium ban

    2148432_heroa.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been given a one-match stadium ban and a £40,000 fine by the Football Association after admitting to a charge of misconduct during his team's 2-1 defeat to West Ham United.

Mourinho was forced to watch the second half at Upton Park from the directors' box after allegedly trying to enter the match officials' dressing room at the interval.

The FA revealed on Monday that the Portuguese had been found guilty of misconduct regarding his language and/or behaviour after an IndependentRegulatory Commission.

Assistant first-team coach Silvino Louro, who was also dismissed in what was a fiesty encounter, denied a similar charge and was reminded of his responsibilities by the FA.

Mourinho's ban takes place with immediate effect, meaning the 52-year-old will not be present at the Britannia Stadium for his side's Premier League encounter on Saturday.

The Chelsea manager has come under huge pressure in recent weeks, with the Premier League champions' 3-1 loss to Liverpool at the weekend their sixth defeat in 11 top-flight matches this season.

The Blues were knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Stoke last week, and will need a more positive result on Saturday to ease some of the scrutiny on their beleaguered boss.

The stats that show Van Gaal is WRONG to back Rooney

    2156092_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney's difficult season seems to go from bad to worse. The Manchester United captain's troubled spell of late has summed up his side's indifferent campaign thus far, and Saturday's Premier League trip to Crystal Palace only served to compound his misery.

A third successive 0-0 draw for United and a continuation of their 325-minute goal drought was just the start of their issues, with their skipper and talisman failing to kick himself out of his personal funk.

Yet Rooney's inability to find the net cannot come as much of a surprise considering he did not touch the ball even once inside the Palace penalty area.

In 46 overall touches, Rooney was regularly involved in the opposition half, however he was physically involved in more play in United's area than he was in Palace's, as the graphic above shows.

His performance at Selhurst Park underlines his major struggle this season in having a real effect in the final third for United. Looking at Rooney's stats compared to some of the Premier League's other leading strikers, the 30-year-old actually covers more ground than the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa but his inability to have a major impact in front of goal is telling.

While Rooney outstrips everyone except Arsenal star Sanchez in our study for total touches per 90 minutes, he ranks last for touches within the opponents' penalty area.

Bearing that stat in mind, perhaps Rooney's performance against Palace was nearer the rule than the exception.

Ronaldo: Leave Real Madrid one day? Why not!

    2170592_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has suggested he is open to the prospect of leaving Real Madrid in the future.

The Portugal star indicated when picking up his fourth Golden Boot award earlier this season that he could stay at the Bernabeu until he is 40 years old.

But the former Manchester United star has now opened the door to the possibility of one day joining a new club.

"Leave Madrid one day? Why not," he told Kicker. "I play for Real Madrid right now, but you never know."

He added: "You have to do what makes you happy. What will happen tomorrow? Nobody knows."

Ronaldo also gave a typically confident response when asked who he thought the best player in the world is.

"Me," he replied. "Maybe for you it’s Messi, others say it’s Iniesta, I respect that, in my mind I’m the best."

Tottenham 3-1 Aston Villa: Dembele, Alli and Kane compound visitors' woes

    2182562_heroa.jpg

Remi Garde was given an idea of the scale of the task awaiting him at Aston Villa after witnessing his new side slump to a 3-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Garde was confirmed as Villa's new manager earlier on Monday following the departure of Tim Sherwood, who parted company with the club eight days ago after taking just four points from the opening 10 league games of the season.

Former Lyon coach Garde, who was in the stands at White Hart Lane, saw Mousa Dembele give Tottenham the lead after just three minutes with his second goal in as many games after netting in the 5-1 win at Bournemouth last time out.

Dele Alli's low finish just before half-time looked to have wrapped things up for Tottenham, but a late show of spirit enabled Villa to get back into the game.

Jordan Ayew's deflected 79th-minute strike halved the deficit and gave the Midlands club hope of snatching a point, but that was snuffed out in stoppage time as Harry Kane wrapped up the victory for the home side.

Tottenham held firm to go fifth in the table, while Villa remain rooted to the bottom ahead of Garde's first match in charge at home against leaders Manchester City on Sunday.

Dembele immediately provided Garde with an indication of Villa's problems as he outmuscled Ciaran Clark after collecting the ball on the left-hand side and fired a low shot under the legs of Brad Guzan at the near post.

Villa went close to responding when Scott Sinclair forced Hugo Lloris into action with a curling effort before Kane - fresh from scoring a hat-trick in the rout at Bournemouth - saw a deflected strike tipped over by Guzan at the other end.

Danny Rose went close from the subsequent corner and Villa's cause was dealt a further blow when Ashley Westwood was forced off through injury after being caught by the elbow of Dembele.

And the visitors were given a mountain to climb in first-half injury time when Alli fired into the bottom-left corner after Joleon Lescott headed a cross from Rose straight into his path.

Tottenham appeared to be cruising to victory in a largely low-key second half but, after Leandro Bacuna had struck the post, Ayew set up a nervy finish when he pounced on some poor defending from the hosts with a strike that deflected in off Jan Vertonghen.

Fellow substitute Rudy Gestede headed wide before Ayew jangled the home fans' nerves further by bending an effort narrowly over.

However, Villa could not take advantage of their superiority in the final minutes and were punished for not taking their chances in stoppage time when Kane found the top corner as Tottenham moved to within five points of City.

    Lewandowski fires Arsenal warning

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has fired a warning at Arsenal ahead of their trip to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday after successive games without a goal.

Lewandowski started the season in irresistible form, netting 22 goals in 15 games in all competitions for club and country, but he has found the net just once in his past five appearances.

The Poland international is determined to make up for missed opportunities and help the club bounce back from their 2-0 reverse in their last Champions League meeting.

"I've gone two games without a goal now, obviously I want to score again. I will give everything for that," Lewandowski told a news conference.

"We desperately need points. We have to show who is the better team.

"We have to stay concentrated and focused, then we have a very good chance to beat Arsenal.

"We have to get the points. We’re playing at home and will give our all."

Ronaldo: I’m the best player in the world, not Messi

    2092742_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo believes that he is the best player in the world ahead of Lionel Messi.

The Real Madrid forward has been battling for top spot with the Barcelona star and has won the Ballon d’Or ahead of the Argentine for the past two years.

Messi heads into this year’s ceremony having won the treble with Barcelona, but when asked about his rival’s achievements, Ronaldo told El Pais: ”It doesn’t bother me.

“If you look back over my past eight years, I’ve always been at the peak; and that is difficult. Name me someone else who has done it? After that, being No.1 or No.2 is a matter of small details, such as if you win trophies or not.

“Perhaps for you, Messi is the best; in my head, I am the best – and everyone should think that about ourselves. That is why I have been able to achieve so much in my career.

“It was hard for me to watch Messi picking up several Ballon d’Ors. I’d be thinking, ‘Why should I go to the gala?’”
