Olympiacos 2-1 Dinamo Zagreb: Pardo strikes late to seal vital win

    2193792_heroa.jpg

Felipe Pardo's second-half double earned Olympiacos a 2-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb and sent the Greek side six points clear of Arsenal in Group F.

Zagreb looked set to pull off a shock when Armin Hodzic crashed in a first-half header to give the visitors the lead at Karaiskakis Stadium before Kostas Fortounis had a second-half penalty saved.

But Pardo spared Fortounis' blushes when he netted within seconds of his introduction as a substitute, and the Colombian scored the winner in the final minute to put Olympiacos on the verge of the last 16.

A point in either of Marco Silva's team's last two group games against Arsenal and Bayern Munich will seal their progression to the knockout phase, with both the Gunners and Dinamo needing two wins and an Olympiacos defeat against Bayern to overtake them.

This victory extended Olympiacos' unbeaten run to 10 matches in all competitions but Silva's men were given a stern test by battling Dinamo despite Josip Pivaric's late sending off for the visitors.

Amid a cacophony of noise from the home crowd, the game began at a fast pace and Dinamo pressed as they sought to restrict their hosts' time and space on the ball.

The early chances fell the way of the home side and Hernani should have opened the scoring when he connected with Arthur Masuaku's cross, but the Portuguese winger looped his header just over the target.

Just as it looked like Olympiacos were settling into their stride, Pivaric found room down the left wing and sent over a cross that found the unmarked Hodzic, whose header slammed against the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

The home side looked to hit back before half-time but their best chance was squandered when Seba broke into the box and opted to shoot rather than cross to Brown Ideye, with Eduardo making a comfortable save.

Pajtim Kasami went closer just after the break, driving a powerful shot just over the crossbar, but Olympiacos suffered a blow when Alberto Botia limped off with a hamstring injury.

They seemed to have been handed a lifeline when Ideye was brought down by Goncalo Santos in the box - but Eduardo pulled off a superb one-handed save to deny Fortounis from the spot and the midfielder blazed the rebound over.

Dinamo lost their goalscorer Hodzic, who was withdrawn with bruised ribs, but Zoran Mamic's side continued to frustrate their hosts with their dogged defending all over the pitch.

The tide finally turned when Silva sent on Pardo for Hernani. Within a minute, Pardo in on goal following Ideye's neat turn and pass and he he tucked the ball into the corner of the net.

Dinamo's chances of holding out for a draw were reduced when Pivaric clumsily brought down Pardo and was shown a second yellow card by referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz.

The sending off left the visitors exposed in the closing stages and Pardo secured all three points with a coolly taken finish inside the penalty area to spark celebrations in Piraeus.

Melo reveals he took a pay cut to join Inter from Gala

    felipe-melo-cropped_c6k47bu11et31la1o7n5vpqyp.jpg

Felipe Melo has insisted he did not leave Galatasaray for Inter for financial reasons, claiming that he earned twice as much at the Turkish giants as he makes at the Serie A club.

The Brazilian midfielder enjoyed a successful spell with the Istanbul side between 2011 and 2015, winning three Super Lig titles.

Nevertheless, he opted to return to Italy ahead of the 2015-16 campaign as he felt he needed a new challenge.

"I felt that a cycle had come to an end. I said that I wanted to make history and win trophies when I joined Galatasaray. I did just that. We won a lot and I feel my time at the club ended in the best way possible," the 32-year-old told Trt Spor.

"It is a lie that I left Galatasaray for the money. I am not even making half as much money at Inter as I made in Turkey.

"I have already said before that the reason behind my departure was that I needed a new challenge."

Neymar: Barca miss Messi, but I'm in a good moment

    neymar-cropped_ui7qqbfld2bg1aouqjwz7hzds.jpg

Neymar is hoping to continue the form that saw him score twice in Barcelona's 3-0 victory over BATE in the Champions League to help the holders cope with Lionel Messi's absence.

The Brazilian broke the deadlock at Camp Nou from the penalty spot, assisted Luis Suarez's goal and tapped home following a counterattack led by the Uruguayan in the 83rd minute.

Neymar has netted eight times in his last six outings in all competitions and wants his impressive recent displays to continue to compensate for the injured Messi - who has not featured for the club since September.

"We miss Leo because he's the best, but I'm in a good moment and hope to continue that way," he said.

The former Santos man acknowledged the role Suarez had in helping him hit the back of the net.

"I'm very happy with the result. We scored three times, which is something we needed to do," Neymar added.

"It was a good run for my third, but Luis Suarez was vital, he gave me a great ball.

"We must remain relaxed, we're doing a good job at this stage of the season and scoring goals."

Neymar and Suarez have stepped up in Messi's absence, scoring 18 of the club's last 21 goals in all competitions.

Guardiola: Opening goal key in Arsenal thrashing

    pep-guardiola-bundesliga-werder-bremen-v-bayern-munich_z4zde9p9zwbw1isilxxfkwrut.jpg

Pep Guardiola hailed an excellent first-half display from Bayern Munich after his team put Arsenal to the sword 5-1 in the Champions League.

Bayern suffered a surprise 2-0 loss at Emirates Stadium in Group F two weeks ago and Guardiola felt the Bundesliga champions made an initially nervy start to the return fixture on Wednesday.

Robert Lewandowski's 10th-minute goal settled the hosts into an ominous rhythm and Thomas Muller made it 2-0 before the half hour.

Full-back David Alaba added a stunning third and laid on the fourth for substitute Arjen Robben, while Muller rounded off the scoring after Olivier Giroud netted a consolation for Arsenal

"We played a great first half," said Guardiola as Bayern stand on the brink of a place in the last 16.

"We lost some easy balls in the first 10 minutes, but we found it easier at 1-0 up and kept getting better with the fans behind us.

"It was hard because it is an opponent who plays good football. We are almost qualified for the next round and that's what counts."

The goalscoring feats of Lewandowski and Muller once again captured the imagination, but Guardiola was keen to highlight a superb performance from midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The former Barcelona man set up the opening goal with a wonderfully flighted pass and continued to torment Arsenal throughout the 90 minutes.

"He's a big player and personality," Guardiola added. "He's very strong in the important games. He still has a lot to learn though."

'If he's a Manchester United player, I'm a Chinaman' - Keane slams Young

    ashleyyoung-cropped_186prr6k6evik16a7e1ki90kvl.jpg

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has hit out at Ashley Young, branding the winger's latest alleged histrionics as "disgraceful" as well as questioning his credentials to play for the Old Trafford club.

Young made the headlines for the all the wrong reasons following United's late 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday, being singled out for an apparent dive in the second half.

The 30-year-old, who has been regulary criticised for making the most of challenges during his time in Manchester, did so again under pressure from Georgy Schennikov inside the penalty area prior to Wayne Rooney's winning goal.

His actions had already earned the wrath of former United midfielder Paul Scholes and Keane has now joined the list of critics.

"If he's a Manchester United player, I'm a Chinaman - it is absolutely disgraceful," he told ITV.

"The senior players need to get hold of him. That shouldn't be accepted at Manchester United. That's not leaving your leg in. That's different. It's the somersault he does, it's an absolute disgrace.

"Maybe once or twice can be seen as a mistake but he's done it nine or 10 times and he's done it at his previous clubs."

Mourinho: Win was for bullied Chelsea kids

    jose-mourinho-champions-league-chelsea-v-dynamo-kiev_mb5lhj4u89ct15zv7bsrd5qq2.jpg

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was glad to provide relief to some of the club's young supporters - who he fears have had a hard time over recent weeks - with victory over Dynamo Kiev.

The Blues' 2-1 win over the Ukrainian side in the Champions League on Wednesday was only their second in nine matches in all competitions.

Mourinho was thrilled with the character his players showed at Stamford Bridge after Willian's late free kick sealed the three points and he also spared a thought for a section of the Chelsea support who he feels have been tested by the poor run of previous results.

"It is easy for kids to go to school with the Chelsea shirt when Chelsea wins every match but not easy for kids of 10 or 12 years old to go to school with a Chelsea shirt when they are losing matches," the Portuguese manager told reporters.

"Probably they are bullied by other kids from teams that are winning matches. The club has to be very proud of the fans.

"It is an amazing feeling for the club to know that the fans are there in good moment and the bad moments. In a good moment, you see the streets full of people celebrating with the bus – but that is easy."

Benzema 'calm' as Valbuena investigation continues

    karim-benzema-athletic-bilbao-real-madrid-la-liga-09232015_10if0alk73rur1e2djb2lx8n8l.jpg

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema remains "calm", according to his lawyer Sylvain Cormier, as reports in France claim he will spend the night in custody while investigations into the alleged blackmail of Mathieu Valbuena continue.

The 27-year-old was brought in by French police in Versailles on Wednesday for questioning believed to be around his knowledge of a group accused of blackmailing Lyon star Valbuena with a sex tape.

Benzema's lawyer Sylvain Cormier told Agence France-Presse his client "played no part whatsoever" in the alleged extortion.

"His mood is calm," Cormier later told reporters.

"My client answers the questions. I recall that it was he who took the initiative to make himself available to the judges."

Benzema is the second high-profile footballer to report to the police over the case, with former France international Djibril Cisse also questioned before being released without charge.

    Mertesacker: Arsenal played without courage

    2192812_heroa.jpg

Per Mertesacker said Arsenal played without courage after their heavy 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern went ahead after just 10 minutes through Robert Lewandowski and, after Mesut Ozil's equaliser was ruled out for handball, Pep Guardiola's side scored three more goals before Olivier Giroud responded in the second half.

Thomas Muller wrapped up the comprehensive win for Bayern, but Mertesacker believes the early goal killed the game for the Gunners.

"They scored too early for us and then they got into their rhythm that was too difficult for us to go against," Mertesacker told BT Sport.

"We scored the equaliser - I heard that it was hand[ball] but that could have given us a bit more confidence, because we played without courage today. That is very disappointing from our point of view.

"Because they scored very early and got into their rhythm, we had nothing against it."

The defeat leaves Arenal needing to win their remaining two games and beat Olympiakos by at least two goals to advance from Group F into the last 16, but Mertesacker is defiant despite the defeat.

He added: "It's not over, and that's how we approach the situation now. That was difficult tonight but we will learn from it, bounce back quickly on Sunday, we need to switch on [and] put away negative energy and fight back."

'I did not recognise my team' - Wenger slams Arsenal after Bayern rout

    arsene-wenger-champions-league-bayern-v-arsenal_or6i8kmqr5g1h4tfydpjhez3.jpg

Arsene Wenger offered a scathing assessment of Arsenal's defending in the humbling 5-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Premier League team bounced back from Group F defeats to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos to secure a rousing 2-0 victory over Bayern at Emirates Stadium two weeks ago – a result that was emphatically avenged by the Bundesliga champions.

Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 10th minute and, after Mesut Ozil had a goal disallowed for handball, Thomas Muller made it 2-0 before the half-hour mark.

Full-back David Alaba scored a stunning third and laid on the fourth for substitute Arjen Robben either side of half-time, with Muller grabbing his second in the final minute after Olivier Giroud netted a classy consolation.

Injuries deprived Wenger of right-back Hector Bellerin and centre-back Laurent Koscielny, but the manager had little sympathy for the players that took to the field in their absence at the Allianz Arena.

"You have to give credit to Bayern for their quality, but we made things easy for them," the Frenchman told reporters.

"We were extremely poor defensively – not at the races.

"Defensively, I did not recognise my team."

Arsenal must win both remaining group matches to stand any chance of progressing to the knockout rounds, but Wenger is not giving up hope entirely.

"There is still a chance to qualify," he added. "It's a small chance, but there is still a real one."

Rooney is one of the greatest - Solskjaer

    waynerooney-cropped_1b86nn9nyyq71ufxi1ks3rpjb.jpg

Former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes club captain Wayne Rooney will go down in history as one of the best players of all time.

Rooney closed the gap to Bobby Charlton's club-record 249 goals to 10 with his winner against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday.

He became England's highest goal scorer with his 50th international goal in September's 2-0 win over Switzerland and former fan favourite Solskjaer claims Rooney will leave a long-standing legacy.

"Wayne's a legend at the club, he's been fantastic since he arrived," he said.

"He might thank me for getting that injury as we needed strikers back then when I got injured, so we signed him.

"But he's been a top, top team-mate of mine, he's a great lad and I wish him all the best.

"Wazza will go in the history books as one of the best players to have ever played for Manchester United and England.

"You know when you've got Wayne Rooney, wherever you put him, you'll get a top, top performance. You could even put him in goal."

:oo::baffled:Carrick defends Van Gaal: I'll take winning over tactics

    michaelcarrick-cropped_167fp6ziridx61hjtg4xe7upne.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick feels criticisms of Louis van Gaal's tactics are misguided and insisted they should not be a concern if his side are winning.

United have been criticised for their possession-based game under manager Van Gaal, who has showed no sign of moving away from his rigid and risk-free approach, despite growing frustration among supporters.

Chants of "attack, attack, attack" were sang during United's 1-0 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday, while the withdrawal of Anthony Martial for Marouane Fellaini was met by boos.

Carrick, however, feels complaints over tactics should not be made given they are winning games.

"It's about winning, isn't it?" said Carrick. "Winning games and trophies.

"Of course we want to play exciting football and score loads of goals, but it's not always easy when teams are coming and putting 10 men behind the ball. It's difficult.

"I think there's an awful lot made of tactics these days. People like to talk about that a lot more now than they did in the past.

"Different managers have different systems and the way they set the teams up. That's just the nature of the game.

"Obviously our game is based on possession and dominating teams with possession. But at the end of the day, you have to score. That's the name of the game.

"I don't think it's more conservative [under Van Gaal]. I just think it's slightly different, in some ways, but not all ways.

"I thought we were more dynamic and aggressive in terms of attacking and getting forward quickly and getting crosses in the box.

"If you win 1-0 then the tactics don't get discussed that much. That's the way of things. It's fine lines isn't it?

"Yes, there are things as a team that we do differently to how we did them in the past but to me, that's just obvious when you have a new manager and he has different beliefs.

"There's a lot made of tactics and things at the minute, but as players we can't get too involved in that. We just do what the manager tells us."

Bellerin has 'small chance' for Arsenal-Spurs derby, says Wenger

    hectorbellerin-cropped_pevf3r3eqtmv1rf9ugyw08e8f.jpg

Arsenal right-back Hector Bellerin has a "small chance" of regaining fitness for their derby clash with Tottenham although remains a doubt, manager Arsene Wenger says.

Wenger lashed out at the performance of his defence - which was hampered by injuries - after they were torn apart by Bayern Munich on Wednesday, going down 5-1 at the Allianz Arena in a crushing defeat.

Bellerin, who has emerged as a first-team regular over the past year at Arsenal, joined centre-back Laurent Koscielny as an absentee from the trip to Germany due to a groin injury.

And, having seen Mathieu Debuchy struggle badly against Pep Guardiola's side, Wenger is pessimistic over Bellerin's chances of staking a claim ahead of Spurs' visit to the Emirates Stadium.

"I don't think Bellerin will be available for Sunday but there is a small chance," Wenger said.

"From tonight we don't have any new injuries."

Though Bellerin is unlikely to feature, Laurent Koscielny should return against Spurs.

    Robben doubtful for Netherlands friendlies

    arjen-robben-cropped_9oqju737ojhs1gv8w76ed2tnd.jpg

Bayern Munich attacker Arjen Robben could miss Netherlands' friendlies against Wales on November 13 and Germany four days later.

The 31-year-old recently returned to first-team action at Bayern after a spell on the sidelines with a thigh injury he sustained against Iceland on September 3, and was included in national team coach Danny Blind's provisional squad for this month's games.

Nevertheless, Robben, who came off the bench in the second half to score Bayern's fourth goal in Wednesday's 5-1 Champions League victory against Arsenal, has made it clear he does not want to take any risks and prioritises his fitness over representing his country at this stage.

"We will have to wait and see whether I will play against Wales and Germany. I will discuss my situation with the club to see what is a sensible decision here," Robben told SBS6.

"We have to think hard about what the right decision is in my situation. My main goal now is to remain match fit until the winter break. I want to play a series of games and get some stability again. The past six months or so were terrible. I had not been injured for a while, got injured and then got another injury right away.

"Pre-season was no good for me. and then I picked up that injury versus Iceland. All in all, it has not been a good start to the season for me. That is why I am only thinking about staying fit right now.

"We will see how these friendlies fit into my schedule. We will discuss it with Bayern, the KNVB and Danny Blind. After that, we will make a final decision."
Robben has collected 87 caps so far, scoring 28 goals for Oranje.

Pogba needs time to grow into Juventus role - Del Piero

    paulpogba-cropped_1bak0rc8e3zud1nitnqiim043m.jpg

Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero has called for patience towards Paul Pogba after his slow start to the season.

Pogba has struggled for form since taking over the iconic number 10 shirt in Turin at the start of the campaign, and this has coincided with the Serie A champion's worst domestic start in over 30 years.

Despite setting up Stephan Lichtsteiner in the 1-1 Champions League draw with Borussia Monchengladback on Wednesday, coach Massimiliano Allegri urged he still must improve.

Yet Del Piero feels he must be given time to grow into the role.

"Today it [the no. 10 shirt] is being worn by a very young and very talented player who half of Europe want to sign," he said.

"Let's give him time to learn, to make mistakes and to grow."

Del Piero - the 2006 World Cup winner - also refused to rule out a playing comeback, despite last appearing in an official match in December 2014.

"I've never said [that I am definitely retired]. Football is my passion but there has to be a time when you officially say it is time to stop," he added. "Who knows what will happen.

"I'm going through a period of reflection at the moment. I will always live my life through football, even if I end up doing something else and I'll never fully turn my back on it."

    Martinez guarded on Stones deal

    johnstonescropped_1ve8aitu0v4fz1uvrcu7bqiocn.jpg

Roberto Martinez has refused to be drawn on speculation that Everton defender John Stones could be handed a new contract by the club.

Stones was the subject of multiple bids from Chelsea before the summer transfer deadline closed, but remained at Goodison Park despite submitting a transfer request.

The England international has once again been a mainstay for the Merseyside club this season, making 12 appearances in all competitions.

Everton are reportedly keen to tie the 21-year-old down to a new contract but Martinez remained guarded when pressed on the subject in his pre-match media conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League meeting with West Ham.

Asked about the reports, Martinez replied: "It's not the moment to speak about any individuals and that will carry on being the case until there is anything to announce."
Left-back Leighton Baines has not featured for Everton this season because of an ankle injury, but appears to be nearing a return with Martinez confirming he will take part in a friendly behind closed doors during the international break.

"Leighton, Mo Besic and Tom Cleverley have been training with normality with the first-team squad and that's a real positive boost," Martinez added. Medically, he's [Baines] in a fantastic condition."

Willian believes Chelsea on the right track

    willian-cropped_d00lhui8ev1j1i666zsh5qt1q.jpg

Willian believes Chelsea are making steady improvements following their 2-1 Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday. The reigning Premier League champions have been struggling to find their best form this season and sit 15th in the league table after 11 games.

They had also found it difficult in the Champions League, but Wednesday's win at Stamford Bridge saw them climb to second place in Group G with seven points from four games, two points clear of Kiev.

"Confidence is coming for us and the results are coming as well," Willian told the official Chelsea website."We have to keep going and keep fighting on the pitch. We lost some games and it’s been difficult for us but we are trying to play better.

"We know we have to improve more and keep going in the same way."

Chelsea needed an 83rd-minute goal from Willian to see off Dynamo, yet the Brazilian was pleased with his side's overall performance."I think we played well but we had a difficult moment during part of the second half," he added.

"They scored the goal but we fought until the end and I scored the second goal. It was very good for us."

    Dani Alves: Barcelona were framed!

    daniel-alves-barcelona-050815_104159yvqv2i5119zsg4h3yyv3.jpg

Dani Alves insists Barcelona’s players have been set up after it was claimed they left the visiting dressing room in a mess at Getafe.

Photos were published of a toilet cubicle covered in fake blood, with the accompanying reports accusing the Brazilian and his team-mates of behaving in a disrespectful manner at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

The images emerged after the Barca players had been heavily criticised for interrupting Victor Rodriguez’s post-match press conference dressed in Halloween costumes.

However, while the club released a statement apologising for that prank going wrong, Alves responded angrily to the reports the changing room was trashed.

“We didn’t dirty the locker rooms like that — someone has messed it up and said it was us,” the Brazilian said after Wednesday’s 3-0 win over BATE Borisov in the Champions League.

Alves then hit out at the fall-out which has followed the players’ decision to dress up after the victory against Getafe.

“There are more important things [than the ensuing criticism]," the 32-year-old added.

"Children are starving. You have to enjoy life.”

Barca’s win over BATE puts them within a point of the next round of the last 16 in Europe, but it came at a cost with Ivan Rakitic taken off with a calf problem in the first half.

The Croatian joins Lionel Messi, Rafinha and Douglas on the sidelines, while Thomas Vermaelen, Andres Iniesta and Sergi Roberto have only just returned to action.
“It’s wear and tear after a long time competing at a high level,” Alves said about the Catalan club’s injury problems.

“It’s happening in football, not only at Barca or Real Madrid. It’s an example that we are human, not machines. So many years competing takes its toll.”

Dortmund have no chance of catching Bayern - Watzke

Borussia Dortmund cannot compete with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga title race, according to the club's chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke.

Dortmund have been impressive since Thomas Tuchel's arrival in the dugout and sit second in the league having lost just once all season, although that was a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Pep Guardiola's side.

Bayern enjoy a five-point cushion in top spot and Watzke believes the title race is already dead in the water.

"It makes no sense to talk about chasing down Bayern," he told Bild.

"Bayern have dropped just two points so far. If they keep this up the entire season, they will spill eight points over the course of the season.

"We are only looking at our own performances. We cannot afford to get carried away now.

"We are on the right track, though, and Thomas Tuchel has already made his mark on the team. But the season is still long and we must remain hungry."

Dortmund host Qabala in the Europa League on Thursday before resuming Bundesliga action against Ruhr rivals Schalke on Sunday.

Benzema charged with conspiracy to blackmail in Valbuena case

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been charged with conspiracy to blackmail in the Mathieu Valbuena sex tape case.

The French international has also been placed under judicial supervision, which means he is prohibited from meeting with Lyon midfielder Valbuena or any other people charged in the case.

If found guilty, he could face a maximum prison sentence of five years.

Benzema’s defence lawyer Sylvain Cormier confirmed the news on Thursday, but protested the footballer’s innocence.

"Karim Benzema will show his good faith in this affair - as soon as possible, I hope," Cormier announced.

"He did not participate in anything he is accused of, no blackmail or extortion. This thing doesn't make any sense.

"He has been accused and charged by the prosecution. This is not proof of culpability; it's only the beginning of the affair."

After presenting himself at the police station in Versailles on Wednesday, Benzema remained in custody overnight after being questioned as part of the investigation into the blackmail case over a sex tape involving his international team-mate.

Three other people have been handed preliminary charges over the case, while former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse was briefly detained last month before being released. The case has been under investigation since earlier this year when Valbuena took legal action after being contacted by someone claiming to be in possession of an sex tape.
